g2 root--impossible? - G2 and Desire Z General

i don't even have a g2 and in no way intend to disrespect any of the hard working devs. but, how many people are pissed off that there is no root yet? not pissed at the devs, but at the measures htc has taken to lock us out. maybe it really is a bug in the chip. what if it never gets rooted? how many people would be extremely mad and sell their g2? like i stated, i don't even own one,but have been into the scene for quite a few years. so i read the g2 thinktank everyday. part of me is always hoping i'll see that it was permanently rooted. but it just doesn't look good. i check everyday because i'll eventually be upgrading my phone soon. and i'd like to rest assured that if these measures are taken on future phones, that the devs will know how to hack it sooner.
anyone think it's never gonna happen? i hope it does. i'm just not used to seeing this being such a huge problem.

It will happen. Give it time. The world was not built in a day.

The phone is still very good even though it isn't rooted yet, and will become a better phone when it is.

I'm pretty much like you, I check the root thread multiple times a day. I really respect those guys.

People said this same thing about the cat and mouse games on the iPhones, Droid X, etc... See how long those lasted? A few weeks? A few months?
History has shown, given the time and determination, there is no consumer cell phone that cannot be hacked.
I hate that they lock us out of our devices, but they are appliances. This happens in the business world all the time. They do it to 'improve' the device by not allowing you to muff it up.
Either way, we will crack the protection mechanisms, or find overflow exploits, etc... to make it happen.

give it time. anything and everything can be cracked with enough time. plus temp root via visionary works great. We truly only need prem root for custom roms and themes

Yea... look at the ps3 lol

nah, root on this phone is impossible, it just wont happen. all devs should just give up and everyone sell you g2's --note the sarcasm, lifes full of it --

AFAIK, to date, the Droid X's recovery chip that prevents custom roms has yet to be defeated. Poor example there, I think.

True. The Droid X still can not load custom roms. I'm thinking we're probably going to be the same way. But there's no fun without Cyanogens mods. Ughhhh

Honestly, 80% of what CyanogenMod brings (aside from bugfixes and optimizations) can be accomplished with full root access to the system.

I think at least some of the Devs see this as a direct challenge to their authority. This is the G2 after all. Root will happen. Droid X comparison is apples and oranges, this is the sequel to the first android device ever! This is where we make our stand or all is lost.

Having stated the above I think HTC, G, and maybe even T-mo are watching this device. Maybe its just to slow down the Devs long enough to push 3.0 . G may try with 3.0 to stop Android fragmentation by offering a huge leap forward. I mean the G1 to G2 jump is mind blowing to me and it seems like a gift to us early adoptors of Android, I want root but the G2 is stunning to me even stock. Just thinking outloud.

People are seriously tripping here. If Android can be ported to the HD2 of all devices, then the G2 can get rooted. Even if it doesn't big deal, it may just be me, but this is the first time I've been satisfied with a phones performance on the stock rom. Its faster and more consistent than any phone I've owned.

This is the truth. I sat and thought hard about what really made me put CM6 on my G1 .. i came to the conclusion that my g1 just wasnt up to par with all of the newer androids. but now i am completely happy with my G2 even on stock. therefore i dont mind waiting for root or if it even happens.

I'm nervous.

Does anyone else here feel... empty?

Most of our devs are gone. They've run off to the Evo portal and ebayed their Heroes. In turn, people bought their Heroes on Ebay and we will have a flood of noobs coming. We probably won't have a rom update from a major dev ever again, and... it makes me feel empty inside.
Darch is still here, Regaw is still here. Not sure who else is.
Toast and flipz have said hero dev will continue, just slow. I think jschi didn't jump ship either. And he is a genius

Heh. Look at the bright side: now other people can take over the reigns; and trust me, some people here are more than capable at doing so.
Don't feel empty, but I am a little upset with HTC. They've pretty much made us dependent on the developers here. I would be fine with stock roms, but it's pretty clear that HTC is pretty much done supporting the Hero. 2.1 is it and the update comes with its own issues that weren't in 1.5.
I got an Android phone with the assumption that it would be supported with the latest updates at a faster pace and for much longer than what I'm seeing by HTC. It makes it pointless to ever do another contract if I'm going to be stuck with a phone that won't get regular updates from the manufacturer. I'm not sure if I would get another HTC phone. I hope Sprint gets the Nexus One.

^ this and i am thinking that devs from other areas will step into heros now that they can pick them up much cheaper than before the evo was released. look at some of the older phones, they are still going strong in the dev department.

The Hero is sort of the unwanted stepchild of XDA now. But, all the first-time Ebay adopters are coming to our "rescue".
I cant do what flipz, damage and darch do. Just naming top 3 roms.
But i can put things together and fix broken things. Ill be stuck with my hero for quite some time. So im always willing to collaborate with others to get something working.
Also im sure we could ask a few questions here and there to the main devs for advice and help. No matter what phone they currently use.
I think we have almost everything we can think of, OC, roms, JIT, themes etc.. I think that covers all the big breakthroughs for are hardware restricted phones. But we can always improve on them, many here are capable. So yeah it sucks these big names left but im honestly not worried about the future of the CDMA hero.
Save up and buy an evo.
This is just how the phone loop rolls, once theres something better , you don't go back.
I will be keeping my hero, but yeah look at it this way , XDA devs are not the only ones dumping the phone , so is sprint.

It does have "full root" but the storage has nand locked/protected. It's like that little switch on and SD card or floppy to protect it only its software not hardware theyll break it in a week or two. You can pull apks in recovery... and WiFi tether needs a netfilter kernel so give em a week and it will work.

Well Regaw should be back at it soon and with you here it should all be ok anyways.

cya motorola - you win.

Droid X is sold, bought a fascinate.
Tired of lacking full root, needing SBF's, fake AOSP, and inability to use 3rd party kernels. This all really destroyed what I considered the best phone ever released.
Great job on the eFuse Motorola! I'll never buy another phone again unless it's fully rooted first.
hopefully you also posted this on moto's own DX forums where it would have more desirable impact for you
Haha I six the same. The fascinate has shoddy sour e, great devs abd who knows when it will get froyo let alone gingerbfead. I am a admin in the fascinate irc chat and bc la k of true source, la k of froyo and lots of bugs im back with my x and my dinc( can't decide ) I love miui on the dinc. Trust me fas inats has awesome harware. You are going to regret that decision. I would rather have a lo led bootmoaxer than horse shot software u can't do anything with.

I definitely agree with you protesting with your wallet, but telling us won't help as much as you sending them an email and posting in there forums.
I miss my Dinc. The X is nice, but man I am missing full root myself. Although, I am sure something better is around the corner. I will hold out.
yeah i had a fascinate for 1 day (basically got it for a cheap price on craigslist so i could either sell or trade for an x) that fascinate was quick but boy that ui sucks. no google? thats even more dumb. i love my x. i had one for a couple months and sold it thinking i was gonna break it in a rough environment i started working in, but now i have another one and won't change til something way better comes out... HTC Merge maybe???
I don't have these problems. Why you might ask well im not rooted I use the phone for what it does and that's a lot. Not a fan of rooting. I see to baby problems with that stuff. I realy on my phone to work when I need it to. Just my two cents. I had the vibrant before this and its the worst phone i've ever had sanding does not take care if there phones. When will it get 2.2? Its six months behind most phones. You are getting rid of one of the best phones out because you can't root it like you want must be nice to mess with a phone then decide to just get something else. I can only afford to buy one phone so I don't mess with it. I mess this phone up I will then be using a very old non smart phone for my new phone. Now I know that there are really cool things that a rooted phone can do but if its not broken don't fix it. Unfortunately im in the minority with this.

This made me laugh. I thought the exact same thing. Maybe he was trying to use Swype for the first time or something?
I didn't like my X in the beginning before it was rooted. I hated the blur except for a few apps (Alarm, Camera, etc.), but now that I'm rooted and running Fission I'm more than happy with it.

Why all the Atrix hate?

Hi everyone!
Long time browser of these forums, but decided to join since I switched from my Iphone 3gs to the Atrix 4g.
Just a question, why so much hate for this phone? Maybe I'm totally in love due to the fact that I'm discovering my freedom on Android (well most of it do to moto/att locking some stuff) but I still think the phone is wonderful.
The only issue is I agree about the screen not being amazing like some of the other Android phones I've seen, but regardless next to my friends G2 and my girlfriends Inspire, my phone is blazing fast, has a pretty good battery (new toy syndrom I'm using it like a monster and It still has not died by the night time start at 8/9am put back in charger about 1/2am with 20% left) and the camera is fine for a smartphone.
I guess it just seems like a lot of hate and I'm wondering if I'm missing something that I should be aware of?
Take care and I hope to be more active in this awesome community.

The smart thing to do is sit back and wait for a few patches to hit or buy a phone that's been in the market for some time and has all the things smoothed out.

ill admit that i am trolling this site to get some of the feedback on the atrix. i for one would have thought it would have kicked as5 (meaning better reviews). i like reading the the good and bad remarks from users here. i applaude some of the honesty/personal opinions of people who like and didnt like it.
Cause many people (including myself) are from some previous flagship Android phones. While Atrix 4G is been described as "Revolutionary" product, some features are degraded due to Tegra2/Moto. This is where the disappointment come from.
The things that are holding me back
are the Moto blur and the locked down boot loader.
I still have my captivate but I'm itching to move up to the new dual cores. And I got sucked in with Atrix by the lap top dock. That turned out to be a real downer, 500$ for a monitor keyboard and a mouse....what are you insane?
I will wait it out and keep my captivate, maybe the galaxy s2 will make its way over here, and before it does I can read the board and see how people like it over their in Euro Disney.
The ability of running roms really came in handy on the captivate, since I have been running froyo for a long time.

Out of all phones I've owned the Captivate has been the most laggy. You shouldn't have to worry about undoing and redoing a lag-fix every time you want to install a new rom. The Captivate is an amazing device don't get me wrong. However the short time I've had the Atrix I've been very impressed. 2800 Quadrant on a stock phone? 37-38 Linpack?? NUTS! I'm sure that could change as I'm not sure if quadrant is optimized for Dual Core. But I've noticed absolutely no lag, the accessories are amazing, the screen is super sharp(although I think I still prefer my Nexus S screen ATM so far..) and hopefully we will be able to get a dual root (Android OS and Webtop) someday =) IMO Moto has done well bringing the first dual core to the states. The only perfect phone I've ever had was my N1, the Atrix isn't perfect but it is one of the best (most definitely the fastest) phone on the market.

Bootloaders not actually unlocked

The Droid X, Milestone etc bootloaders were not actually unlocked. It was a hoax. http://www.androidcentral.com/motorola-bootloader-still-encrypted-developer-comes-clean
I don't see why so many are willing to put up with this. There are plenty of other good android phones out there. As long as Motorola is going to fight this, there will never be a truly safe way to flash custom roms/kernels on droid phones, and devs simply aren't going to invest the time necessary to develop much.

Galaxy S phones are very solid, with a few mods, it will fly. Plus the bootloader is unlocked, if u are coming from the x, you will greatly appreciate this. I just picked up a thunderbolt and so far, i love it. Its crazy fast, LTE or not, and having the 256mb of extra ram really makes for a phone that never slows down, no matter what you are doing. My only complaint other than the battery being undersized, as HTC ALWAYS does, is the adreno 205, people with the mytouch or G2 will tell you its good. When voming from a galaxy s the GPU is the only thing that i dont think is better.

HTC Evo Shift Vs Samsung Epic 4G *ROOTED*

So I'm positive everyone see's this question all the time. But they always judge it on the stock phones. Well I'm looking to get one of these phones, but to ROOT them. Which one do you believe I should get and why? I'm also looking into battery life even though buying an extended battery isn't a problem. Also which rom do you think is best for your pick? Thanks in advance.
Will be posting in both sides to get more answers
Easy answer... look at the topics and responsees in both forums and decide which group you would rather deal with...
And then look at the rom and root options of both. HTC is on a whole nother level.

Well seeing how the Epic community jumped on my question much faster, with more people ... Lol jk.
But any more suggestions people? Thanks in advance
Do not get the Epic!!!!! I didnt like it as its made like ****. The shift is much faster and even my sister wishes she would have just gotten the EVO and shes not even a power user. HTC makes the best phones on the market and I will always be buying my phones from them.
Get the Shift, Root it, Install Shift Deck and enjoy an awesome phone

This. And I own an Epic (my wife has the shift). I'd never trade my Epic in for anything, at least at this point, but yeah the Epic forum is full of complainers, trolls, and guys with tiny wangs (or so I assume with how they have to constantly act like king s**t in the forums all of the time). And shift has a ton more devs, plus working cm7. But the phone itself is sweet, and faster (in my opinion, with the right rom), and has an independent number row. And the screen is bigger and looks nicer. I could go on and on about differences, but I've gotta run for now.

From everything I've heard, the CPU in the shift has the edge on the Epic, but the GPU in the Epic edges out the Shift. If battery life is important to you, I say hands down go with the Shift. I easily get a full day every day and my friend with an epic is always asking people for chargers, even changed all his backgrounds to black to save battery (doesn't save on LCD but on LED it does). He does everything he can and still struggles for a full day out of the thing. Now I speak from what he's told me, I've never owned an Epic myself. Overall I've been thrilled with the shift, does everything I ask of it with no lag and no complaints.

I certainly had this issue on stock rom on the Epic. I couldn't even make it through a work shift without the battery dying. But custom roms on the Epic blow that out of the water. I now can go a whole day of moderate usage and still have around 30-40%. But I don't know, I'm guessing with a custom rom the Shift still kicks the Epic's ass battery-wise. My wife is running CM7 (which the Epic may not see for a looong time), and I don't ever see her reaching for a charger or complaining of the battery. And being of the female variety, she tends to use a lot of the live wallpapers, widgets, etc...

The Shift now comes stock with Gingerbread from Sprint. There is no way to root it. You are SOL. I pulled all of my hair out when I figured this out.
Turns out Android (maybe not "Android", but the current ecosystem) sucks hard. Suckers like you and I come online and see threads and guides about rooting that simply won't ever work on our devices because they've been manufacturer updated. And sites like this don't seem to give a damn -- at least update the root "guide", mods.
Quite worthless. Don't fall for this BS. The Shift is again unrootable, just like almost all updated phones from Sprint. Chances are, with the devs having moved on or got lucky enough to have an old version of Android when they got theirs, all new ones will remain unrootable forever. #@(*$

How can it be unrootable "again"? If it was unrootable the first time, then how did we get it?

Yes, you are absolutely right. The updated ROM from Sprint will never be rooted.
NEVER. EVER.
Has anyone tried to run an old Froyo RUU on a brand new Shift that came with Gingerbread?

You need to take a breather my friend. The stock 2.3 will get rooted in time, just like the 2.2 did. "Unrootable forever" is just an ignorant statement. If all you're gonna do is rant and rave a bunch of misinformation, please keep the post to yourself.
Back on topic...
I have a shift and purchased the Epic for my wife.
The Epic display is nicer, and the epic actually feels lighter (and is?) Than my shift. It also has more keys on the keyboard.
However, on stock ROMs my shift seems faster and has better battery life. UI's are a very personal preference, but I much prefer the HTC sense and overall software stack vs Samsung's touchwiz. It just seems to work better.
I've beeen running custom ROMs on my shift and most of them work well. About ready to try a custom ROM on the Epic to see if it works better...

Yes, and man will never go to the moon. We will never be able to fly. Come on man .
PS. Don't knock the Site, or the Dev's. The work they do is because they want to, it's not an obligation.
after the samsung moment debacle i will never own another samsung phone. to me the epic is a moment on steroids. its still a POS lol. glad i switched to the shift

ive been very happy with both my shift and the dev community here (who have turned me from an ignorant n00b-lout into a root-user) and all those who have helped me try and solve my problems.
As for rooting gingersense, it will happen soon enough, just give the devs here some time.
My wife has the Epic and I have the Shift 4G. I can't stand her phone, and she can't stand mine. Tho we both take our phone's off the charger in the morning and when we drive home, mine still is in the green where she has to use the car charger going home. Then again, neither of our phones are rooted. I have rooted her phone in the past, didn't seem to make much difference. Still running the crappy samsung software.

Rooting in and of itself isn't going to make a damn bit of difference in battery life. It's what you do with the root that counts... lol, sounds like a phallic joke gone bad...
