From day one, I have had isues with signal strength. It will be 6 bars one second and then no bars the next while in the same spot. Is there yet a solution?

I have the same problem. Mine will go from perfect signal to the damn 1x icon with no bars and be so slow. Even though on in the same spot when I had full signal. It pisses me off.

If you install roam control from the market, it will force your phone to roam and in the process turn your phone into a verizon phone since you will be using there towers It solved all my reception issues, just be sure to check allow data roaming and you most likely will not have another problem with reception. Oh also you must be rooted for it to work
Yeah but when using roam control the internet speed isn't 3g

The 3g icon is displayed on my phone and actively in use since i enabled data roaming, so i dont see your point? Data is fast and reception is good, dont be a debbie downer

try testing your speed. just because the 3g icon is displayed doesn't mean you're getting it. and the contract between sprint and verizon stipulates that sprint customers roaming on verizons network are restricted to 1x speeds.

Thank you. That is my point. Your not on 3g

Im on wifi most of the time anyways, and when Im not (If I remember) I turn on 4g, so thats probably why I never noticed 3g being any different As far as signal strength, roam control does make you have excellent service for making calls, there is no denying that.
fix does not work.
Is that force roaming to Vz? Maybe you started getting spotty Sprint ownwd EVDO coverage. Forcing 3g only could be putting you on Vz towers.
Sent from my Nexus S 4G using Tapatalk
Doesn't EVDO Only disable voice calls?
This would also be a good way to save battery without losing all data connectivity.
3G/EVDO uses a lot of power. If you switch this setting to CDMA only you will force the phone to only use 1x. The data rates will be slower, but acceptable enough for most notifications and light things like facebook.
CDMA - 2G/1X Slower Data greater battery life
EVDO - 3G/EVDO Higher speed data, battery hog.

I dont think it is.
I have my phone set to Home network only. doing this boosted my signal from 1 bar (-90,-100dBm) to a full signal (-65dBM) it clearly says Sprint CDMA EvDo Rev. A in connection status.
Thank you very much =D

Yep that is correct. Just tested it...
Hybrid OR CDMA only are the only options you should choose here folks.
CDMA only WILL produce battery life savings though. Your data will be slower then molasses rolling uphill in December BUT it will be sufficient for emails.
It's a very nice find either way just on that fact alone. Back in the motorola days this was a very popular battery saver mod. Disabling EVDO and forcing it to always be 1X.

hehe.... you are correct sir... going back to old ****ty service again so i can get phone calls
The EVDO radio and CDMA radio are two different radios I believe.
When you put EVDO only you're probably seeing JUST your 3G signal which might appear stronger.
CDMA only you're seeing just your 1x/voice/sms signal.
Hybrid the signal bars I'm sure just average the two out...
That's how I "think!" it works... could be way wrong.
Well at least i tried since sprint is dragging their heels. We need a new radio and quick.

I wouldn't be surprised if a new PRL fixes this... seems to be area specific, I have great signal for the most part...
Also, fixxer, I know you've been having horrid battery life. I'm sure the low signal is causing this as the lower the signal the more power the radio is going to be given to try and maintain the signal.
Try CDMA only and use WiFi whenever you can (also be sure to set WiFi sleep policy to never). 1x uses significantly less power then 3G... although it's to slow to be downloading big apps or loading really complex web pages, it would however be great for general notifications. Give it a shot and let me know if it helps your battery at all!

Could be a prl but i still think it needs a radio. This phone is set to wcdma when it should be cdma auto prl. Hopefully we get a fix or ota soon. My battery is better today since i flashed a stock rom and kernel. Not great but better.
I gave the CDMA-only option a shot, no incoming phone calls at all. Switched instead to EVDO only, and calls seems to be coming through better in an area where I had maybe 50% success rate for incoming calls when running unmodified. I'll leave it here for awhile, so I know when someone is actually trying to call me.
This is horribly frustrating, I suffered with poor AT&T service for years for the iPhone and never thought I'd be wishing I hadn't changed carriers. I could maybe justify the shoddy call coverage if data was at least fast, but it's not. I'm giving this another week, and going for a return and possibly switching carriers again.
CDMA only setting for calls/texts paired with 4G for data seems to work pretty well.
Since EVDO only mode seems to prevent receiving calls.
True test will be when I get home, 1930's brick building that has been raising hell with calls.

Has anyone else had significant trouble with service after receiving this update? My battery life is much worse (16-24 hours down to 8-10 hours), and I frequently have to restart my phone to send/receive messages.

Since 60680 my 3G speeds are slower, I am in 1x more often and roaming in areas I never roamed before and 4G doesn't always reconnect after entering a 4G area. Battery life is slightly down as well.
Service Area: Central NJ from Edison to the Jersey Shore Asbury/Point Pleasant)
Yeah, batter life sucks now and tws is going through the roof (stock EC05). I've been having reception issues too. I've been missing a lot of calls where I've never missed them before. And for some reason my voicemail notifications are different too. Now I only get text message notifications (not sure if it's all related, though)
I got a no service icon in an area that always used to get decent roaming.
My 3G is all messed up.... not working
Not sure if this is due to a refurbished phone I just received from Asurion.. already talked to Sprint for over 1 hour and nothing
On the phone with them...
My battery life seems to have decreased since the update as well but I don't have any numbers to verify that.
prl 11114 doesn't seem to have this issue. I have installed it and have noticed an increase in batt life. Maybe something is up with the 60080 prl. BTW best modem for me so far is EE03.
PRL means "Preferred Roaming List". This allows you to roam off other networks towers in which Sprint has an agreement with. It's only for roaming people. So if your still in your home area where you have Sprint service, you are not going to be roaming. PRL does not affect battery life, call quality, signal ect. Put it this way....If our phones did not have a PRL, we would not be able to roam. That is all.

I know what prl stands for. However, if the "preferred" roaming list assigns higher preference to towers with less signal than previous, it would make total sense for battery life to be affected, as more time would be spent searching for a stronger signal. My office is in a lower level, and service is 1 bar at best, typically roaming. Also, as another user stated, TWS has increased significantly.

It doesn't give your preference of other towers. It isn't a list of towers.

Original posting:
---------
Meant to post about this two days ago, and got busy.
I've been one of those with near zero signal in my home neighborhood. I live in Scotts Valley, near Santa Cruz CA. Since I got my Epic last October, I have been extremely frustrated that I get 0/1 bars at home, the signal is too weak to be usable for phone calls (constant digital dropouts -- conversation is impossible), and of course pathetic data rates when I can actually get a connection, which ALSO is never reliable.
When I bought the phone, a tower within sight of my home on another ridge was scheduled to get a Sprint site before the end of the year (2010), according to their website map. Then, this upgrade disappeared. I called, and no one knew anything, of course.
I've been roaming on VZW, who have a 4/5 bar signal here, via Roam Control ever since I got the phone. Fine for calls and text, no data worth speaking about.
Woke up two days ago, and was at first mystified, then thrilled to see 5 solid bars on Sprint!!!! 3G data rates consistently 1100/750 down/up!!!
Apparently, they finally got around to upgrading their coverage in the area. 'bout time
4G? Don't even go there. Not yet, not expecting it... Ever.
Wow my 3g speeds are 200 down max and I have no 4g
Sent from my SPH-D700 using XDA Premium App
In a way, I have Sprint's poor coverage in my hood to thank for me needing to root and get acquainted with XDA. Otherwise no Roam Control. But it would rock to get a similar upgrade around here. Zoning and landscape just make it really unlikely. If I go just half a mile north or west it's totally different, with 4G and all. Hell, I can watch Netflix over 4G at my office, just not where I stay. I hope your story is repeated far and wide.
I've had the same experience as you. I've been with sprint for 11 years now and my signal is now amazing at the house. 2600 kbps dl, 550 ul. On average, of course. They upgraded the tower nsar my house last year.

UPDATE: After some joy, Sprint decided to turn off whatever they did. Back to 0/1 bars here at home, inability to use voice without constant dropouts, no data to speak of...
Back to Roam Control and cursing Sprint. I am so close to walking away from my contract into VZW's arms. The SG2 could be enough...

that's more true if you use a load of data. I use roam control for voice and text constantly because my apartment is a dead zone, and I use my wireless router for data, never got anything about it from sprint

That describes me. At home forced roaming so I can actually make and receive calls, data over wifi.
With the RC tasker plugin, phone automatically switches between forced roaming when in range of my home network, then back to "automatic" when out of range.
It's a workable solution, but not something I should have to do.

Would that not be a Pleasant surprise instead of unpleasant? My signal seems to have gotten better lately as well

This may be a bit off topic, but I roam ALLLLL day when I'm at work, it gets me quite angry, and I continue to use data and phone while I "roam" , and saw a charge for roaming one time but called sprint and asked them how the **** I am roaming within my coverage area. They fed me some BS but took the charge away. I've never seen a charge for roaming since. Do you guys get charges?
So far as I know, with my family 2 phone everything plan, roaming is included.
Edit:
I just looked, it doesnt say roaming anywhere, but when looking at changing my services, the only roaming option given is Canada Roaming.
Edit 2:
Found it.

I notice when I use a Verizon PRL I can download 3G speeds at my place at about 600Kbps. When I use a Sprint PRL and roam it is always around 100Kbps and the ping is very high, usually around 1000ms.
Sprint coverage at my house is terrible, to the point where I can barely send text messages. Verizon works great though, I even get 3G working here at reasonable speeds.
Now the problem with the Verizon PRL is that I can't get back on the Sprint network and I am always roaming no matter what. At work Sprint service is fine. I have roam control which is awesome but it would be nice to roam and have good data rates too.
yes there is
(dont try and flash the zip you have to write the PRL with QPST)
That's the one I'm running now. Maybe it is just connecting to a different tower than with the Verizon PRL.
Oh, wait... I'm using 01115 for a PRL. I will give that one a go. Thanks
yea that gave me 3g speeds (didnt run a speed test but it was fast) but my wireless signal kept dropping....
other prls give me 1x and I get about 6-15kbytes/sec download xD
yeah on roam control ping with verizon is ~1000
im in the same situation.
If i do the QPST thing, how easy will it be to revert back to my sprint prl? Because like you, i would only need it while im in my house.
Step RIGHT out the door, BOOM 6 bars. Its like my house is lead or something lolol
