[Q] Moving to at&t - HTC Aria General

I'm a current alltel subscriber who's service is being transitioned to at&t.
I have a hero and love it, but unfortunately am forced to switch phones when at&t takes over. The best phone they are offering for free in exchange for the Hero is the Aria. I just wanted to drop by here and see what you aria users think of the phone? Should I take it for free and keep my current alltel rates until the end of my contract and save some money, or should I sign a new contract with at&t and upgrade to the captivate?

I think the aria is an excellent device. Very capable, once rooted very customizable, and with its small form factor very pocket-able.
Don't let the specs scare you off. I came from an iphone 3g, and really don't miss the extra inch (or whatever) of screen. Runs swype and live wallpapers like a champ on cyanogen mod 6.
Hope you enjoy whichever device you decide on.

The captivate has some problems that probably aren't gonna get fixed. Captivate is good for media but its mediocre as a phone and GPS.
Sent from my Liberty using XDA App

The Captivate already got an update for the GPS issues, though I haven't heard how good it is.
Seems kind of a simple question though. Are you happy with your Hero? The Aria will be a slight upgrade. It'll be a smoother experience, but largely the same as you currently have. If you feel like you've been constrained then you need to step up to the Captivate.

From what I heard the Gps fix didn't fix much. Idk tho cause I don't own a captivate. All I ever hear about the captivate is lag fix, browser fix, fix this, fix that... seems too much work.

My son has a CDMA Hero on Sprint and he is very jealous of my Aria. The screen size is the same, but the Aria has a faster processor and is a lot thinner and easier to pocket than the Hero is.
I have to agree with everyone here; the Aria will be a very smart choice that I don't think you will regret once you get it.
Regards,
Tom

Ended up taking the free option and the Aria... figured if I'm unhappy with it my contract will be up and June and I can re-evaluate from there.
But from what i've read here and elsewhere I look forward to my aria

Dont worry, if and when that phone does come out im sure AT&T or Verizon would get it before Sprint did. Did anyone see the two new phones Sprint just came out with. The transform and some other phone. Both are totally P.O.S. I was hoping they would bust out w/ a Evo but with a better screen. Instead they come out w/ two phones that are worse then the Hero. Figures.

guys,
the phones sprint brought out are perfect to create a FULL LINEUP of android phones for Sprint.
All three of those phones are on-par if not better than the hero in terms of hardware. (Esp. the Zio)
Sprint has two top tier phones that no one else has, plus a solid middle of the pack lineup (with these added).
They have to provide phones that most peole want.
If they put out another 4g phone, all of you would be complaining about the $10/month fee.
You have to be able to step back and look at what Sprint is doing overall.

you can find the articles that go along with this imaginary phone. Its most likely never getting produced
mozilla has no intention of developing this phone at the moment as its focus is on software, not hardware. But this is a phone concept for the open web, and one which has features sure to make their way into new phones over the coming years
http://www.geek.com/articles/mobile/mozilla-seabird-phone-is-full-of-good-ideas-20100924/ for those that ask for the info to back up my statements.
Since Mozilla Labs launched the Concept Series with an open call for participation we’ve had thousands of people join in, share ideas and develop concepts around Firefox, the Mozilla projects and the Open Web as a whole.
In response to our open call Billy May, in early 2009, produced a throw-away concept for an “Open Web Concept Phone”. Working directly off of that community feedback, Billy has since finished the exploration with his concept “Seabird”.
Throw away concept.

so don't get excited. sadly we will most likely see focus on innovation wain while the carriers demand focus on locking down the phones. which like every other security option given to the end user is cracked wide open and tinkered with.
Holy Crap
I'm still wide eyed and drooling after seeing that. Absolutely jaw dropping. Mozilla could dominate the market if they could mass produce it and contract every carrier to provide it. Of course, then we would all have the same thing

Mt4g for a vibrant good trade or not so much?

T mobile offered me a mt4g for 250$ should I take it ill have to sell this one to get the money for it I like the vibrant but want that video chat and fast speed im not sure what I should do stay with a phone I can mod the hell out of or go with one I seemingly won't have too? I have always found the battery on HTC phones to be terrible and am not a fan of sense. But if your usage isn't heavy and you like sense then it is probably worth it.

I currently use both devices, the MT4G definitely has better battery life than my Vibrant. Data speed wise they are both about the same. In an HSPA+ coverage area I get ~6mbps down on both. I don't think you will see much greater speed than that for awhile on the T-Mo network with either device. Although theoretically the MT4G should get faster when the network opens up some more. The video chat is cool but I don't personally use it. I struggle with the screen on the MT4G after using the Vibrant for so long. Hope that helps. For me thee only solution has been to have both!

The Desire HD has been out and is rooted and has CM 7. I predict that on 2/13/2011 you will be able to root and install CM 7 on the Inspire by that evening.
I can only hope that it has the same hboot as the European one

Nope, It is confirmed that the Hboot on the Inspire is different than the DesireHD. "HBOOT-0.85.0019" on the inspire, which has the exploit used for the desireHD patched. but there may be another way that will be tried feb 13th

No the captivate is not better then the aria for a phone in my opinion, but it depends on what u want to use it for. its better for battery life, web browsing, and gaming..but i wouldn't buy another samsung..I would personally reccomend the Inspire if u want a bigger screen. and if your looking for a keyboard
go with the NAM (BELL) Desire Z. works perfectly on att 3g if u get it unlocked
i'm totally getting an inspire, especially since i have an upgrade available on my account so it should only be $99...don't know if i'm going to sell my aria right away or not though.

Sent from my SGH-T959 using XDA Premium App
I fail to see how they are screwing us over. They release a new phone with the latest Android, as they should. They are updating the Galaxy S line to 2.3, including the Vibrant. Its already an official release in Europe. Some of you think its late, but how many old handsets have been updated to official 2.3 across all brands? Galaxy S/Vibrant will be one of the few.
So can someone explain to me how we are getting shafted? Did Samsung announce that we are not gonna get Gingerbread?
^ you are being to logical
The original #NeverAgain that I got going was under much different circumstances, I agree. It is too soon. Then again, I think manufacturers/providers/Google need to know the demand of the consumer.
Trying to sell new phones (by slow updates), trying to save money (no OTA updates), etc... those are wrong reasons. I hate custom UI's for the reason they are used as excuses for slow/no delays too.

I don't understand why it's necessary to make this an issue to boycott anyone. Everyone should know fragmentation has been one of the biggest issues on android.
If the argument you're making is valid Samsung should charge more for their phones. Otherwise you should reevaluate your valuation of the phone when you purchase it.
If price you paid = $(vibrant2.2)
And
$(vibrant2.2) < $(vibrant2.2) + $(vibrant2.3 in the future)
Then we all got what we paid for, if not then you should reconsider what you expect from android.

But how are they? They've updated us to Froyo like we asked and now the whole Galaxy S line will be updated to Gingerbread. Please show me all the other OEMs devices that have actually seen 2 major updates. Hardly any.
If you people would take a look around you'd not only see that as of late Samsung has been getting better, but almost every other OEM is treating their customers worse.
I can't wait for 2.3 either, but this isn't exactly NeverAgain material... Put down the pitchforks and wipe your tears now please.

So how does HTC and motorola able to charge the same as samsung yet provide all the needed updates? The Evo is already getting or gotten 2.3, most of the droids are getting it as well....doesnt sound like a problem with price like you put it, more like a problem with manufacturer, thats why my next handset will be from someone else.
My old crappy MyTouch 3g had froyo months before my Vibrant (which was sold with the promise of froyo in a couple of months or so) every did. BTW the MyTouch did not have froyo promised, hell not even eclair was promised

Now what gets me is that the Nexus S (90% the same phone as the vibrant) has had gingerbread since 2010, we are now getting froyo

Might be because of the fact that Motorola Droid's are limited to only Verizon and the Evo's are only on Sprint? Samsung has different versions of the Galaxy S across all the carriers.

I use my vibrant everyday until i get my new hercules....
Still using mine, although i got a warranty exchange for a jankey usb port. what a trip it has been. went from stock eclair at release. I remember when ext2 was the shizzle. then to froyo w/o gps, then to froyo w/gps. Wow, you mean i can put a FFC in my phone! Holy crap, cm7 works now. Then 2.3 w/o gps, now 2.3.4 w/gps, ffc, ext4, streaming netflix, gtalk with video, gamehub, 10 lockscreen options, hulu, fun nordic names for my roms. will most likely stay with ol' bess for a while
Same here, got it on Juuly 16th 2010 and still using it. Great phone, well built, slim and feels like made from HQ plastic. Loved showing off the screen to droid X, iphone buddies
Sad to see a lot of devs leave. EDT also acquired G2X's. Hope they keep up the great work with Vibrant.
I use mine when I feel like flashing roms or just messing around. Since odin makes this thing pretty much unbrickable. I still love my vibrant great phone.

i also got mine in july last year. it had almost-working gps (better than some, but not as good at my old G1). i recently called tmo and made up some bull**** excuse to get a warranty replacement and now the gps locks faster than wifes G2 (but we'll see how long that last). either way, i'm much happier now and will be able to wait for quadcore goodness (whenever that will be) or at least until my contract is up.

I have an update right now but not going to waste it on the sensation. Waiting for the hercules or maybe the nexus 2 4g. That and the hercules looks awesome.

Still using mine. Looking to get a FFC asap. Its a great phone honestly, I dont see the need to jump ship just yet, especially with these 2.3 roms with semi working GPS coming out. As soon as my contract expires this fall, i'll be switching to a no contract plan until the Att/T-Mobile merger either happens or doesn't next year. If it does, i'll end my service plan and move over to Sprint, if it doesn't, i'll probably still end up moving to Sprint once they have their 4G LTE up.
Still have mine. Also got it the first day it came out. Ill use until I can get an SGS 2!

I think I'll wait until a new quad-core phone comes out ...
Everyday. Got mine in Sept. of 2010. GPS worked out of the box. This phone will stay close to my heart, its my first dev phone. I know a *dev* phone is like a nexus, or along the lines of, but its the first phone I dev'd on. Great phone.
