I just talked to my TMO Customer Care rep and they confirmed that as soon as I started to use my Nexus One phone, my existing insurance started covering it (instead or my G1).
You have the opportunity to get the handset insurance within 14 days of purchasing the phone. This applies whether you purchased it from TMO or Google. You must bring in your proof of purchase, from Google to a corporate TMO store and have them set it up if you currently do not have insurance.
The only reason that I bring this up is due to the questons about bootloader unlocking and warranty. The deductible with Assurion (TMO's insurance provider) is $130 (she believed) But this is better paying the full $530 for a replacement.
how much per month is insurance?

But there's a catch they don't replace it with another nexus. They compensate by giving u a phone of equal value. Its an internal memo that was passes around(I work for T-mobile) ill find it and post it when I get to a PC.
the PHP Bundle (premium handset protection) is $5.99/mo.
I just wanted to state that I too was quote that Asurion has a $130 deductible for a replacement N1.
I was however told that as of Saturday night that the only way to get insurance for for N1 is to have insurance on your previous handset. The N1 is then grandfathered in.
Again, this is just want I was told. I'm sure we'll get some more concrete details as time goes on.
I can confirm that Tmo will not replace the Nexus One. I canceled my insurance.
I didnt have insurance on my g1 so im screwed then?
Tmo will not insure the n1 since it was not purchased directly from tmo
they even had me drop the insurance on my g1 because they said the n1 was going to be my primary phone

T mobile needs to get their effin' story straight.
There are 4 different stories so far on this post.
the day before my nexus came i called tmobile to cancel the insurance for my mytouch 3g. She said there were no insurance options available from tmobile for the nexus one...kinda sucks, i wonder why google or htc couldnt make money offering something...
:/ i too have heard multiple stories. asurion does have insurance for google's nexus one though. 5 bucks a month, 130 deductible.
http://phoneclaim.com/t-mobile-program
speaking with asurion right now. already spoke with t-mobile, and they said because not purchased through them, won't insure. so far, asurion is saying it is covered, sign up for coverage through t-mobile. seems like some finger pointing and blame gaming.
lol. asurion says 'yes, it's covered, contact tmo customer service'. tmo customer service says 'no php'. so, sounds like you're screwed.
I was able to add it but tmobile said it will get you a comparable model in case something goes wrong with your nexus one. weird!
ah, it gets rewritten again. here's the scoop, and this is from t-mobile. you can get the same rep with whom i spoke, rep id = 3828599.
you CAN get insurance, but no extended warranty. it will be covered with the normal 1 year thing (which is different than my current sprint settings, where it's covered as long as i keep paying). TMO was using information from last week that said they weren't covering it. they are now. think i'll get the phone tonight
wait so if we do have insurance and we switch to the nexus and it breaks will we get a new nexus or a comparable phone?
reports are that if you break it right now, it'd be 'comparable', because asurion doesn't have them. but, they're getting them. so, it should be a replacement, if you can wait to break it, lol
finally picked up my N1 from fedex, went directly to Tmo without passing GO, then got insurance for 6/mo, but i never asked if they would replace with another N1, now i gotta call for myself...thanks for the update though.
Asurian does cover the Nexus One, I talk to serveral rep from assurian and they confirm it. It's even on their page. Who cares what tmobile say, they're not replacing your phone.
Check here http://www.phoneclaim.com/t-mobile-program
Select your manufacture (Google) then you will see the Nexus One and how much the deductable is.
I just called Tmo for the second time about insurance on the N1. At first, she told me that they don't cover it, but I told her about my first call to Tmo (last Sat) and how the rep told me it IS covered if you already have coverage (PHP) on a G1 or similar. She put me on hold for a minute or two, and said there was nothing in her documentation that said Tmo will cover it. I asked her if she could conference Asurion in on our call, and she said "sure, hang on". When she came back, she didn't have Asurion on the line, but said when she went to the "contact Asurion" link/page whatever, it had more information about the N1, and specifically stated that they WILL cover it if you ALREADY have PHP.
I then asked her to check that my account reflects the fact that I have a Nexus One, which it did. I didn't want to call up one day needing to use the PHP and have them say "oh, we never knew you had a Nexus One".
So that's twice I've called up and been assured that my N1 is covered.
She added that they're all very new to the N1 and the learning curve is steep, and that they have new memos coming out every day concerning the N1.
I just called and all the Tmobs representative needed was give them my IMEI.
I just registered my nexus phone on my existing insurance that I have had since the G1 > CLIQ > nexus one. It was fast, easy and painless.
Hi, im planning on buying a new nexus one from ebay or craiglist. I was wondering can you still get insurance if you buy it from a seller and not google?
LOL...No.
Well not legitamately...
I would venture to say that T-Mobile would still give you premium handset insurance. When I told them I wanted to change my phone to Nexus One and would it be insured they said yes. Thats all they said, didnt ask for proof of purchase or serial or imei number.
One of the reasons I stick with T-Mobile is because they are pretty leniant with stuff like that.
They only ask for IMEI codes for phones they carry. Otherwise its fair game.
tmobile will only do the 4.75 insurance through insurion not the Full php bundle that extends the warranty for another year.
but to do that you must have the original receipt of the phone and it must be within 14 days of the purchase time to get any insurance on it.
So if the seller bought it and its past the 14 days. You will not be able to get the insurance.
If it is b4 the 14 days then you will need the ORIGINAL receipt to get the PHP added on.

I didn't give them anything, I just asked them to change the insurance. Never once asked for receipt. I would call and ask before but I'm sure they will let you put it on the phone.
in my store its required to see the receipt if were gona add insurance or php bundle on any ones phone.
Otherwise u buy a n1 break it, and sell it on ebay. and some guy snags it and realizes theres somthing wrong with it, adds Php to his plan and then files a claim for a new N1.
to keep things like that from happening, in store we ask for receipts.
for over the phone with Customer care i suppose it can be different b/c they can search the IMEI of the phone and determine the purchase date.
even so if its past 14 days of the purchase date, they will not issue any insurance.
I am glad I bought my Nexus One through Craig's list.
After I sold the MyTouch, and the G1 and a couple other odd phones I had, the total out of pocket expense for my phone was $140. Brand New, sealed box.
How much are they going on Craigslist that you would not want to buy directly from goole?

You will see them for all kinds of prices. I "paid" $500 for mine (only $140 of that was from my pocket, rest was from selling other items), new, in a sealed box. Mine even came with a 1 month unlimited voice/data T-Mobile SIM as well.
Keep in mind though, I didn't have to pay the hefty sales tax on it either, so I got a great deal...
i had a g1 with t-mobile and ive had my nexus one since they came out
just today i got a letter from them letting me know that they now cover my nexus!
if anything goes wrong its only a 130 deductible!
btw the company is asurion
i pay 4.79 a month for this coverage
We already know.
I got a letter from Asurion today telling me that they do not cover the Nexus One. WTF?!
yep. this is pretty darn old. search before posting, pretty please
cheaper options are also available... again search is your friend

This is actually worthy of discussing... Did you buy the insurance through T-mobile directly? I haven't received any such notification from Asurion.
Thanks for posting. There have been insurance posts but I haven't seen one where you could get insurance at this point. I bought the phone the day it came out. T-Mobile told me no insurance. I read on xda that yes insurance. I called T-Mobile back different person told me no and said call asurion. Asurion said they have insurance but since I didn't buy the phone from T-Mobile my insurance would give me a 'comparable phone' but not a nexus. So I bought a backup nexus. This is huge news for me personally because I may be able to sell my backup. Thanks OP, and thanks for not using the search option since this is new news and the search function is frequently ineffective.
when i went to t-mobile and got my sim for my even more plus no contract plan, they told me the phone is insurable, 5.99 a month 130 deductible
I know this was posted in another thread but I wanted to reiterate it here. Call your normal insurance company and insure it through them. I have State Farm and I pay $2.40 per month with ZERO deductible. It's also a stand-alone policy so that if I need to make a claim, it doesn't affect my other policies.
It has been backorder since the beginning. I doubt they ever stocked it. I have been waiting for my replacement for 3 weeks now.
yeah, state farm just cuts me a check for $529, and i buy a new one thru the google store
I received my Nexus S today and after playing with it, I've decided to return it. The only issue I had with the phone itself was that the camera had no zoom. Other than that, I liked the phone.
However, my issue is that I barely get T-Mobile service out here where I live. And i only get 2g, Edge or whatever the data service is called. A T-Mobile Rep specifically told me that the service was good when in fact it's pathetic.
So I'm going to go back to my Evo
So I want to return my phone and get my money back. I bought it online and they shipped it with a packaging slip not an actual receipt. Can I just return this to the Bestbuy store in my city or do I have to ship it back to Bestbuy?
Also I paid for the phone with my Paypal account, do anyone know how Bestbuy will give me my refund back, cash etc?
Thanks

I just listed it for sale in the marketplace forum...bestbuy didn't want to accept the phone back because its no tmobile service out here where I live which is the reason they don't sell tmobile.
So I'm just going to sell it.
It's probably the only nexus s for sale in the market.

Where can i buy one off contract? The tmo store will not sell it as of yet.
A few options:
- Non T-Mobile phone stores (In Houston, I tend to look for cell phone stores in Chinatown)
- Craigslist (Always ask for seller's ID due to the blocked IMEI scam on the rise)
- E-bay
- Market place on here (I think I've seen a few)
- Did you try calling T-Mobile directly? Also, just FYI, my friend bought her 16GB White T999 from a T-Mobile store here in Houston TX for full price (payment plan) about two weeks ago. So I'm not sure why (I'm assuming) you were told that T-Mobile store will not sell it yet or why the store wouldn't sell it to you.

please elaborate on the ID, you mean ask them for the IMEI?
I want to buy it off craigslist but it's obvious people stole bulks of these phones off somewhere.
I called the TMo stores directly, not the company. They all told me they have a memo from Tmo not to sell off contract s3's until further notice.
They are available for their value plans but you will be making payments on $599 plus tax.
.. via SGH-T999 by TT2
On craigslist make sure they give you the receipt is one way to go. Or have them meet you at a T-Mobile store (preferred) when you do the exchange. Kinda like buying a used car and meeting at the dmv to change title.

No. Not asking for the IMEI number because the IMEI will be on the phone and on the box.
What I mean was this: A lot of people buy their phones on Craigslist and the phone will be working for a few weeks or a month before it will eventually stop working. When you call it in, you will be told that the phone was reported stolen and as such, the IMEI was blocked, rendering the phone to be useless on T-Mobile's network. What had happened was, the person selling the phone on CL would have claimed the phone to be stolen and received a replacement phone through insurance. This way, he would have your money and still own a galaxy S3.
For example of what I think is an example of such scam, click me
So, when you do a transaction on CL, take a screen shot of the CL ad, do the transaction at a T-Mobile store. Always ask for a receipt or any kind of proof of purchase, and ask for their personal ID so you can track them down in case the phone was reported stolen so you can have support for when you go to the Police (if you choose to go to the police).

Thanks for the info. First time with tmo and was going to return my Costco s3 and try to get one on CL so Im not stuck on a contract. Now that I know this ill be more weary with phones off contract. Quick question. Besides getting their ID info which could be difficult to do, could you technically let T-Mobile know that you just bought it off craigslist and have the seller give his info to them which the seller would most likely do rather than give you his ID. Assuming ofcourse that he is also with using tmo service so his account can be noted.

Wow thats crazy.
Here's my short story.
The family decided to start a new 2 year contract and everyone got Galaxy S2's. This was like in April. Sold the S2 because I wanted the S3.
Started looking on Ebay, then Craigs. I checked on Craigs one day and found a pretty good deal for a sealed blue 16gb (though I had to give up the micro sim in the deal). Jumped on it that same day and met locally. I get to the spot and it turned out the seller is the older brother of this dude I knew in middle school/high school (they were both there at the spot). In my head I was like oh nice, this should be easy.
Opened it up on the spot, paid the guy, and left.
I feel pretty lucky for that to happen. I mean, of all chances I was able to meet up with someone on Craigs that I know.
But hearing these stories of people scamming people through IMEI is crazy.
