You have the opportunity to get the handset insurance within 14 days of purchasing the phone. This applies whether you purchased it from TMO or Google. You must bring in your proof of purchase, from Google to a corporate TMO store and have them set it up if you currently do not have insurance.
The only reason that I bring this up is due to the questons about bootloader unlocking and warranty. The deductible with Assurion (TMO's insurance provider) is $130 (she believed) But this is better paying the full $530 for a replacement.

But there's a catch they don't replace it with another nexus. They compensate by giving u a phone of equal value. Its an internal memo that was passes around(I work for T-mobile) ill find it and post it when I get to a PC.
the PHP Bundle (premium handset protection) is $5.99/mo.
I just wanted to state that I too was quote that Asurion has a $130 deductible for a replacement N1.
I was however told that as of Saturday night that the only way to get insurance for for N1 is to have insurance on your previous handset. The N1 is then grandfathered in.
Again, this is just want I was told. I'm sure we'll get some more concrete details as time goes on.

T mobile needs to get their effin' story straight.
There are 4 different stories so far on this post.
the day before my nexus came i called tmobile to cancel the insurance for my mytouch 3g. She said there were no insurance options available from tmobile for the nexus one...kinda sucks, i wonder why google or htc couldnt make money offering something...

speaking with asurion right now. already spoke with t-mobile, and they said because not purchased through them, won't insure. so far, asurion is saying it is covered, sign up for coverage through t-mobile. seems like some finger pointing and blame gaming.

you CAN get insurance, but no extended warranty. it will be covered with the normal 1 year thing (which is different than my current sprint settings, where it's covered as long as i keep paying). TMO was using information from last week that said they weren't covering it. they are now. think i'll get the phone tonight
wait so if we do have insurance and we switch to the nexus and it breaks will we get a new nexus or a comparable phone?

finally picked up my N1 from fedex, went directly to Tmo without passing GO, then got insurance for 6/mo, but i never asked if they would replace with another N1, now i gotta call for myself...thanks for the update though.
Asurian does cover the Nexus One, I talk to serveral rep from assurian and they confirm it. It's even on their page. Who cares what tmobile say, they're not replacing your phone.

I just called Tmo for the second time about insurance on the N1. At first, she told me that they don't cover it, but I told her about my first call to Tmo (last Sat) and how the rep told me it IS covered if you already have coverage (PHP) on a G1 or similar. She put me on hold for a minute or two, and said there was nothing in her documentation that said Tmo will cover it. I asked her if she could conference Asurion in on our call, and she said "sure, hang on". When she came back, she didn't have Asurion on the line, but said when she went to the "contact Asurion" link/page whatever, it had more information about the N1, and specifically stated that they WILL cover it if you ALREADY have PHP.
I then asked her to check that my account reflects the fact that I have a Nexus One, which it did. I didn't want to call up one day needing to use the PHP and have them say "oh, we never knew you had a Nexus One".
So that's twice I've called up and been assured that my N1 is covered.
She added that they're all very new to the N1 and the learning curve is steep, and that they have new memos coming out every day concerning the N1.
I just called and all the Tmobs representative needed was give them my IMEI.
I just registered my nexus phone on my existing insurance that I have had since the G1 > CLIQ > nexus one. It was fast, easy and painless.

I bought some coverage from Squaretrade. It is like $70 for 2 years of coverage. Damage is covered up to $399. $130 short of the Nexus total price, but hey, I'd rather be out $200 (price of the Warranty included) than $530 should I somehow break it.
After 2 years time, I'll be due a new phone anyways
I get mine through my bank account. Might be worthwhile if you need travel insurance/breakdown cover etc.

I wouldn't even consider making a claim against my homeowner's for this. That would be ridiculous. I'm looking into other solutions.
I just visited the t-mobile store to activate my N1 and I asked them about the insurance. The rep said that they will *probably* be able to insure the phone soon. The rep also suggested to add the insurance to my plan so once the insurance policy starts I'll be covered.
Not sure how knowledgeable the rep was or if it was complete bull****, but I got the insurance anyways, just $5 a month.

I agree with this line of thought. It's a similar situation to the iPhone which has never been insurable through AT&T and Asurion (that's the insurance carrier's name).

I believe it is the same as all other wireless handsets; one year from date of purchase.
a phone doesn't look like a really good thing to insure on paper... to an insurance company.
$5 / month = 106 months = 8.833333 YEARS for them to recoup their costs if you spaz out and kill your phone. (Assuming the full $530 price)
i wouldn't insure that thing either. buy it, use it, don't break it.

(I will say this: I had used Asurion for 2 differnt t-mobile phones, and surprisingly they were always easy to get replacement phones from; not at all what you normally expect from an insurance co when it's time for a payout.)

I spoke to a Tmo rep this past weekend who assured me the Nexus One can be added to an existing policy, but cannot be added (by Tmo) if you don't already have one. He said he spoke to Asurion personally, and spoke to his managers.
I just got off the phone with T-mobile and they were able to add insurance for my Nexus One for 5.99 and will replace it with another Nexus One for 130.

If you have a decent bank account in the UK, you get free mobile phone insurance. I insured mine with Lloyds bank today.
Change your insurance to the $4.79 option, the $5.99 includes T-Mobile's warranty program which is not covered (but it will cover any other T-Mobile phone you have used before!)
Just called T-Mobile and the CSR transferred my G1 insurance to the Nexus One (Cheaper by ~$1 a month).
What exactly does this warranty cover....

+1 on squaretrade, their warranty is much better, and they process claims really fast.
Squaretrade doesn't cover loss or theft. Asurion covers pretty much anything but acts of war as long as the nexus is the last device used on your sim card.
I just confirmed that my nexus one is covered by asuripn which is pretty sweet.
I called and got mine switched from the $5.99 plan to the $4.79 plan.
It was funny the rep on the phone mentioned the 14 day period to get the insurance then asked me when I got the phone to see if I could get the insurance.
Me: "It's only been out a week."
Her: *awkward silence*

Yes, yes and yes. Asuiron is awesome. Squaretrade is a complete ripoff. Good luck if you lose your device. And between what you pay for the deductible ($50), the difference in price between what you get ($399 max) and the cost of the device ($530) and the cost of the warranty, you are better off not getting any coverage.
Remember, Asurion offers INSURANCE and Squretrade offers a WARRANTY. You have a 1-year warranty with HTC anyway. Asurion will cover it no matter what. They had a G1 in my hands in less than 48 hours. I put it a claim at 6PM on a Monday, they confirmed it on Tuesday and I had the phone Wednesday morning. There is a $130 deductible and $4.79/month but I must say that the first few days without insurance was nerve-racking. For less than $5/month I pretty much don't care what happens to my phone now. It is worth every penny.
Just an update to all of this.

Secondly, i finally got my Nexus One. Went to my local T-Mo store this afternoon, told them what plan i wanted (Even More Plus 500) and after the entire store ooooohhh and aaaahhhhh over the Nexus, the sales girl asked if I wanted the $4.79 or $5.99mo coverage for the phone. I was shocked and told her what a fiasco it had been for users earlier in the week.
anyway, thanks again to everyone and off I go into "happy land"
I called Tmobile today.... had my handset insured in like 5 minutes total. There was really no confusion from the phone rep.

This is actually worthy of discussing... Did you buy the insurance through T-mobile directly? I haven't received any such notification from Asurion.
Thanks for posting. There have been insurance posts but I haven't seen one where you could get insurance at this point. I bought the phone the day it came out. T-Mobile told me no insurance. I read on xda that yes insurance. I called T-Mobile back different person told me no and said call asurion. Asurion said they have insurance but since I didn't buy the phone from T-Mobile my insurance would give me a 'comparable phone' but not a nexus. So I bought a backup nexus. This is huge news for me personally because I may be able to sell my backup. Thanks OP, and thanks for not using the search option since this is new news and the search function is frequently ineffective.

I know this was posted in another thread but I wanted to reiterate it here. Call your normal insurance company and insure it through them. I have State Farm and I pay $2.40 per month with ZERO deductible. It's also a stand-alone policy so that if I need to make a claim, it doesn't affect my other policies.
It has been backorder since the beginning. I doubt they ever stocked it. I have been waiting for my replacement for 3 weeks now.

When talking with the lady from claims I was told that they absolutely replace the phone with a Nexus One or, when there are none, I am to buy one and receive a payment of the difference between the cost and my deductible. I told her that this was totally contradictory of what I was just told, and to make a note on my account of what she stated.
I am wondering if anyone has any experience with such an issue and if that person could shed some light.

asurion will not give you the extended warrenty for this device which is why you pay 4.79 instead of 5.99 . That just basically means if you need a replacement, no matter what happened, you'll have to pay the 130 deductible.
In my past experience with them, I always have gotten the same phone if it was in stock, and if it wasn't, then i got upgraded to whatever was top of the line then for only the price of the deductible so I wouldnt worry about them.
Asurion actually is the one company in the cell phone business that doesnt try to bend you over and (you know where this is going ) in my opinion

I would also like to know what happened. What was the process like getting your new Nexus? I have the Asurion insurance too and I want to know what I'm in for. I don't mind paying $130 for a brand new phone, as long as it's brand new! Especially if I don't have to send in the old device...
i'm still not sure why people will pay more for lesser service on their phone insurance.. call any major insurance company and ask for a personal articles policy, tell 'em it's for your phone, and you want $600 coverage. cost you between $30 and $40 a year with no deductible, and they just write you a check in the event that ANYTHING happens to your phone.

Amen! Screw Asurion. Just call up whoever you have your auto insurance through and if they don't offer insurance, call State Farm. No deductible, no questions, $30 a year.
They have nexus one in stock now. I just got mine. Had to wait 2 weeks for them to get nexus one in stock.

i was told from tmobile that i could not get my n1 insured
because i did not buy it at a tmobile store. Every time i talk to T mobile i get a different story. Hope you figure it out good luck.

I purchased 2 HTC Evo 4G's on June 4th. I still have until July 4th do return/cancel the lines. I'm having those light leaking problems and my GF's phone is lifting at the bottom part of the screen. I ported both numbers from AT&T to Sprint and want to know what the best route would be to get replacements.
My local RS which happened to be the Point of Sale doesn't have any Evo's in stock nor did they know when they will receive any. I was told by a manager that when they receive more stock they will call me to let me know when I can swap out the devices. I don't believe him being that he stated that even if he gets them after the 30 day period it'll be an easy swap. I think I'm setting myself up for failure and they just want me to ride out the 30 day period so they can collect commission.
I called Sprint today and was told that I have the option to return the equipment and get 2 replacement phones (different models) and that I would have to wait for my upgrade to get the Evo's again. Why would I wait a year and a half to upgrade my phones!?
Is there an escalation path so I can have Sprint send me 2 replacements in the mail and I'll send these 2 back? I don't want to go through insurance since I just got the phones and I refuse to pay $200 to get 2 devices shipped to me when I just got the phones.
I'm stuck between a rock and a hard place and need some advice. I asked the rep if I could return the Evo's and use 2 Sprint phones I already own without a contract and she stated that I would still be on a contract. How does this make sense? I thought that if you own the phones there wouldn't be a contract. I hate calling because I get different answers every time and I don't want to be stuck with the bad batches for almost 2 years.

You bought it at RadioShack and Sprint helped you? I tried this and got turned down.
You do not need to use insurance on a phone for warranty issues. If you are paying for TEP (total equipment protection) you can walk into a sprint repair center (it's important that it's a repair center) and they can go through to see if it's repairable, supposedly they've been taught how to tighten the screen or if they can order a new one for you. It's hit or miss that it could be a refurb but I would raise a stink that you're within 30 days and don't want a refurb but a new phone.

You should be able to have your account noted at RS that you want a replacement but there are no phones in stock.. RS is mailing me a replacement within the next 5 days,... They can extend the 30 day return period to 90 days if they do not have the item in inventory. Give it a shot.
i woudl escalate within sprints phone customer service. say you need replacemetns or you will cancel and get iphone 4. once you want to cancel tehy will transfer you to retentions whom have all the power to retain you as a customer.
do not trust the radioshack manager. be very weary of being able to do anything outside of 30 days.

RS can order replacements for you right now. No need to wait. Go in and ask, and if they claim they cant, call the district office number that's posted in their store. Easy-Peasy.

It's no different for us swapping the bad ones after 30 days, especially with the known inventory shortage. And if the guy says he'll do it, there's no reason not to trust him. The negative attitudes towards store workers is effing annoying.

actually, expand that to all front line workers. i don't know if it's because they're not knowledgeable, lazy, or downright malicious, but they are always making promises that never materialize.
what i would do is email sprint customer care... they will write you back and then you will have something in writing... safest way to go about doing this. as a backup plan, sign up for TEP... worse comes to worst you'll at least be able to commit insurance fraud, drop $100 and get a new device.
