Where can i buy one off contract? The tmo store will not sell it as of yet.
A few options:
- Non T-Mobile phone stores (In Houston, I tend to look for cell phone stores in Chinatown)
- Craigslist (Always ask for seller's ID due to the blocked IMEI scam on the rise)
- E-bay
- Market place on here (I think I've seen a few)
- Did you try calling T-Mobile directly? Also, just FYI, my friend bought her 16GB White T999 from a T-Mobile store here in Houston TX for full price (payment plan) about two weeks ago. So I'm not sure why (I'm assuming) you were told that T-Mobile store will not sell it yet or why the store wouldn't sell it to you.

please elaborate on the ID, you mean ask them for the IMEI?
I want to buy it off craigslist but it's obvious people stole bulks of these phones off somewhere.
I called the TMo stores directly, not the company. They all told me they have a memo from Tmo not to sell off contract s3's until further notice.
They are available for their value plans but you will be making payments on $599 plus tax.
.. via SGH-T999 by TT2
On craigslist make sure they give you the receipt is one way to go. Or have them meet you at a T-Mobile store (preferred) when you do the exchange. Kinda like buying a used car and meeting at the dmv to change title.

No. Not asking for the IMEI number because the IMEI will be on the phone and on the box.
What I mean was this: A lot of people buy their phones on Craigslist and the phone will be working for a few weeks or a month before it will eventually stop working. When you call it in, you will be told that the phone was reported stolen and as such, the IMEI was blocked, rendering the phone to be useless on T-Mobile's network. What had happened was, the person selling the phone on CL would have claimed the phone to be stolen and received a replacement phone through insurance. This way, he would have your money and still own a galaxy S3.
For example of what I think is an example of such scam, click me
So, when you do a transaction on CL, take a screen shot of the CL ad, do the transaction at a T-Mobile store. Always ask for a receipt or any kind of proof of purchase, and ask for their personal ID so you can track them down in case the phone was reported stolen so you can have support for when you go to the Police (if you choose to go to the police).

Thanks for the info. First time with tmo and was going to return my Costco s3 and try to get one on CL so Im not stuck on a contract. Now that I know this ill be more weary with phones off contract. Quick question. Besides getting their ID info which could be difficult to do, could you technically let T-Mobile know that you just bought it off craigslist and have the seller give his info to them which the seller would most likely do rather than give you his ID. Assuming ofcourse that he is also with using tmo service so his account can be noted.

Wow thats crazy.
Here's my short story.
The family decided to start a new 2 year contract and everyone got Galaxy S2's. This was like in April. Sold the S2 because I wanted the S3.
Started looking on Ebay, then Craigs. I checked on Craigs one day and found a pretty good deal for a sealed blue 16gb (though I had to give up the micro sim in the deal). Jumped on it that same day and met locally. I get to the spot and it turned out the seller is the older brother of this dude I knew in middle school/high school (they were both there at the spot). In my head I was like oh nice, this should be easy.
Opened it up on the spot, paid the guy, and left.
I feel pretty lucky for that to happen. I mean, of all chances I was able to meet up with someone on Craigs that I know.
But hearing these stories of people scamming people through IMEI is crazy.

T-Mobile stores won't sell them off contract? I bought mine full retail at a factory T-Mobile store almost 2 weeks ago. No issues what-so-ever.

$99 is the rumored price.. not sure where that number came from though.
And no T-mobile on that list of carriers?
I know for sure Walmart ONLY sells locked and subsidized devices, so this will be bundled with T-mobile or - most likely - Verizon. If Google continues its current model, you will probably just sign up with service and need to go online to order the phone. They may have a display model, but I bet they will not actual "sell" the device. Right now their mobile center is more like those kiosk booths at the mall.

in stores walmart only sells locked phones but on their website they have sold unlocked phones in the past and i believe they still do, though i have not checked since the g1 came out.
My wife washed her phone with her pants over the holiday, and I went all over to find a replacement. Not wanting to extend my contract (since I want to get rid of it after its over), I had no choice but to look for an unlock or unsubsidized phone. At least during the holidays in store and online I could find no option with out service and seemed to list the same stock.
Of course, retailers can pull those things during the heavy shopping seasons too.
I sort of doubt Google would change their strategy. If T-mobile can't get Nexus Ones; not sure why Wal-mart. I know Wal-mart is a major chain, but normally doing business with Wal-mart is a major pain.
I hope this is a load of Bravo Sierra!

If you have been on your service for a while then the telco will give you the unlock codes, I unlocked several blackberries with t-mo customer service and my girl unlocked her storm through verizon.
I think you just have to be a customer for more that 6 months or something. Just tell them your going out of country.

It now "appears" that the Walmart Nexus add was a mistake http://www.businessinsider.com/walmart-says-it-has-no-plans-to-carry-the-nexus-one-2010-1
From Mashable.com
Update: Walmart says the phone erroneously appeared on the site by mistake. Their statement: “Due to a technical error, this item erroneously was displayed on our site. We’re working with our partner Let’s Talk to have it removed as quickly as possible. We have no plans to carry Nexus One in Walmart stores or online at Walmart.com at this time.”
No comment I guess?
EDIT: Sorry, I just noticed this has been posted.
If they claim they aren't selling it in stores or through that site... then wtf is it even doing on that "erroneous" page? Seems like a very difficult error to make.
I knew it wasnt fesible, Att, Sprint and Verizon without Tmobile? Hard to believe.
Ok, end of story.
Hi, im planning on buying a new nexus one from ebay or craiglist. I was wondering can you still get insurance if you buy it from a seller and not google?
LOL...No.
Well not legitamately...
I would venture to say that T-Mobile would still give you premium handset insurance. When I told them I wanted to change my phone to Nexus One and would it be insured they said yes. Thats all they said, didnt ask for proof of purchase or serial or imei number.
One of the reasons I stick with T-Mobile is because they are pretty leniant with stuff like that.
They only ask for IMEI codes for phones they carry. Otherwise its fair game.
tmobile will only do the 4.75 insurance through insurion not the Full php bundle that extends the warranty for another year.
but to do that you must have the original receipt of the phone and it must be within 14 days of the purchase time to get any insurance on it.
So if the seller bought it and its past the 14 days. You will not be able to get the insurance.
If it is b4 the 14 days then you will need the ORIGINAL receipt to get the PHP added on.

I didn't give them anything, I just asked them to change the insurance. Never once asked for receipt. I would call and ask before but I'm sure they will let you put it on the phone.
in my store its required to see the receipt if were gona add insurance or php bundle on any ones phone.
Otherwise u buy a n1 break it, and sell it on ebay. and some guy snags it and realizes theres somthing wrong with it, adds Php to his plan and then files a claim for a new N1.
to keep things like that from happening, in store we ask for receipts.
for over the phone with Customer care i suppose it can be different b/c they can search the IMEI of the phone and determine the purchase date.
even so if its past 14 days of the purchase date, they will not issue any insurance.
I am glad I bought my Nexus One through Craig's list.
After I sold the MyTouch, and the G1 and a couple other odd phones I had, the total out of pocket expense for my phone was $140. Brand New, sealed box.

You will see them for all kinds of prices. I "paid" $500 for mine (only $140 of that was from my pocket, rest was from selling other items), new, in a sealed box. Mine even came with a 1 month unlimited voice/data T-Mobile SIM as well.
Keep in mind though, I didn't have to pay the hefty sales tax on it either, so I got a great deal...
Yes....My wife went in to buy me a Tab From the Brandon FL Mall. The first place she went he would not sell her the unit unless she signed up for Internet. She had 650 bucks in her pocket ready to buy and he would not do it. I know the answer why (they make their money on contracts) But that is why I was willing to pay 300$ more. AHHHHHHH.
Haha, I actually had a very similar experiance. I went on the day after Thanksgiving (I originally wanted to get the Sprint Tab for 550 at Best Buy but decided at the last minute to spend the extra 50 bucks and get the T-Mobile one). Two T-Mobile stores told me they wouldn't sell me one without a contract and one told me that I wouldn't be able to get one off contract till February. I almost bought one off of Amazon.com but they day they came in stock, the price jumped to 650.
I eventually found a brand new T-mobile tab on Craigslist for 550, so I guess I won?
hmm, thats weird I bought mine from Tmobile on the prepaid thing so I use wifi most of the time then when I need 3g I can buy a prepaid card.
I bought mine from the Tmobile store in Temple Terrace. I had no problem buying off contract there. Try a different store because the one in the Brandon mall is staffed by idiots.
Same experience. So we bought a $10 prepaid for it (100MB or 7 days, whichever comes first).
I had the same issue. My first t-mobile one I got by with the pre pay same as everyone else. But my second t-mobile one (ginny pig) I had some issues with the store trying to force a contract on me. Of couse my creadit was crap but what worked in my favor was my taking a picture of the tag nest to the galaxy tab price and no contract price with my iphone. I then told them it false advertising and there is no display ad showing they could not sell me one off contract. I then said fine I will send to consumer reports and post on xda-developers with your store name and location. The t-mobile rep then said give me a min and i will call the manager. 2 min later got my t-mobile galaxy tab. What does get me is they make a profet off the full price one and I bought the leather case and the car adapter so there is money to be made from these non contract tabs.
Amazon has lowered the price on the T-Mobile galaxy tab to $620 (form $650) with free shipping. Since there is no tax (for most people) the Amazon version will come out cheaper.
I just bought a ATT Tab from Amazon for $620 because Tmobile has terrible coverage in my area
I had the same issues in New Hampshire Mall with 2 stores. I called T-mobile, they told me it might be some affiliates.... I went to an "official T-mobile" t-mobile store (in the same mall) and got it for 599.99 as advertised. No contacts, no activation fees.
I had the same problem on launch day here in Albuquerque. The salesman even checked with the manager and still refused to sell me one off contract. So, I waited till the next day and bought the Verizon version, though it sure would have been nice to have the 16gb internal instead of on the card.
Well I caved.....
Yes I caved, went and bought one on contract form a different store. I want to go by the the store and walk in and tell them what I did. I am about to cancel both of my lines and go to Simple Mobile anyway as soon as this thing can make a voice call. I dont mind a Blue tooth in my ear at all.

How is that even relevant to the topic?
I don't understand why T-Mobile corporate isn't getting involved. Or is this is just an "authorized reseller" problem? Because those stores aren't even legitimate T-Mobile stores, anyways.
Is there a way to tell the difference between a T-Mobile USA Nexus 4 sold by T-Mobile vs one that was sold directly from Google or someone else? I'm looking to buy a used Nexus 4 but with the latest trend of people buying phones from T-Mobile on payment plans and not paying then T-Mobile blocking the IMEI I'd prefer a used phone that was bought directly from Google and not from T-Mobile.
Any way to tell based on SKU, serial #? Thanks...
I can't answer your question about telling the difference, but when I sold a sprint phone on craigslist the guy wanted to meet up at a sprint store and make sure everything was in the up and up.
Maybe you could arrange a meet up at a t-mobile store

they are exactly the same, from tmobile and the play store. theres nothing differing between the phones. the only thing different is where you buy it. tmobile could block the imei if you bought it from the play store too, if they had reason. when your phone goes onto the tmobile network, the imei number registers.
The T-Mobile Nexus 4 is the exact same phone as the phone purchased through the play store... They are both Unlocked and can be used on any gsm network... I would guess the only difference is that T-mobile can block the IMEI from being used on their network.. So if you buy one I would check with T-mobile and verify the IMEI or serial number with them to see if it is purchase through them... Same with the google phone.. I would think you could verify the IMEI through them
It's the same phone. However, T-Mobile only sells the 16gb model.
I'd actually say it is safer to buy a tmo model and check in store that there are no negative marks on the account before purchasing, with a google play model you can try calling ATT/Tmo to check the IMEI but who knows how long it takes for a stolen phone to show up in the database.
Buy it directly from Google play store. It's cheaper than tmobile.
Buying from a person doesn't fulfill your warranty either. Warranty is for the person who bought the device (there are ways around it but it's not worth the risk). No difference between tmo and the one from play store except tmo only offers 16gb whereas play store offers 8 and 16

Thanks all! I'm looking at the 8GB one so I guess that won't be from T-Mobile...they told me IMEI was not blocked on their end (at this point at least) and I'll check with AT&T...I think for any provider to block it if the phone was purchased from elsewhere other than the carrier someone would have to report it stolen but I'm looking to buy one off ebay so I should have documentation if anything happened?
My main concern was it gets blocked for someone not making their payments if they bought it right from T-Mobile...but I suppose one could report it stolen and if they have insurance they could get another phone and the one they sold would get blocked?

If they bought the phone from T Mobile then it wouldn't be the 8GB version. T Mobile ONLY OFFERS the 16GB variant.
Like I said before, I recommend that you do not buy it from any random user off of eBay or Craigslist. I've seen posts on the N4 forum where someone bought from Craigslist in person and then BAM! a couple weeks later, their phone was IMEI blacklisted and they just put down +$200 on a phone that is now a brick when it comes to having any cellular connectivity.
Only Play Store or through a friend/family member that you can trust are the viable sources I would go for when it comes to buying a phone from a third-party. Play Store is the safest way on getting your device.

i got mine from Google, it's the ONLY way to go unless you need to pay for it month to month. Which I understand too.
I got mine for 199 from T-Mobile so that's why I got it from them (I paid for it up front, I don't do the installment payments). That's better then 349 at Google. But I had to use my upgrade. I'm glad I did cause now I don't have any upgrades anymore since the new plans kicked in. I'm on a classic 1000 min plan.

You said you used your upgrade, so you paid subsidized price. Which is absurd. $200 subsidized is the same for both the Nexus 4, HTC One, and Galaxy S4. While full price for the HTC and Samsung is around 600, while the Nexus is $299... And T-Mobile rips you off. It's cheaper from Google Play. I thought T-Mobile was trying to "change the game". Stop with the carrier bull****..
Let's think this through, Tmobile only blacklists IMEI's in 2 instances
1) The phone was insured, and reported lost/stolen.
- You can only insure the phone if it was purchased through tmobile. Anything purchased from the playstore is uninsurable
2) You are on a payment plan FOR THE PHONE and it is not being paid.
- For playstore the phone is purchased outright. There is no payment plan. The only way to have a payment plan is if you purchased the phone from tmobile.
If the phone was purchased via playstore, and the TMOBILE phone plan was not being paid, they would just suspend your account, but NOT blacklist your phone.
That said, if you can guarantee that the original owner purchased from the playstore (receipt with IMEI?) then you should be safe.
Does Tmobile only provide the black version? Maybe purchasing a white 16GB guarantees that it's from the playstore?
I decided to get myself a nice birthday present in the form of a Nexus 6. Online searches turned up inflated prices and out of stock notices. I know all the carriers sans Verizon ATM carry them but in limited quantities. Right now I'm in BFE Iowa for the holidays. Yay. Nearest carrier store.....30 miles......us cellular. I've never dealt with USC before and never intended to but today I had to. I called to see if they had the 32gb blue model in stock. Put on hold for ten minutes. Kind of on hold anyways. I can hear the girl asking about it like "wtf is that?". Some jumbled crap and a clicky clack and she says yes they have them. Made my way to the store and I walk in and you know how them sales people are all ready to get your signature. I told them I called earlier to pick up a device. The same girl who answered my call went to find the device. Took 15 minutes. Then she asked me to wait in queue to set up service and select a plan. I said no I want to purchase full price no contract. She was very surprised. She said she had never done that before. Two other sales people said the same thing. The last lady to help me also had never done it but did know how. It took over 30 minutes to find the device then figure out how to ring it up full price. Ha ha ha. I thought it was quite ridiculous and funny. Now I have the nexus 6!! Smart device #40-something

For me as a German stories about American Carriers are always interesting. Sure we do have carriers with subsidized phones as well but not as "bad" as in the States.
In 2010, I was living in California for about a year and brought my phone (good old nokia n97 symbian). I first walked into a Verizion or Sprint store (can't remember exactly) and tried to get a regular contract with a sim card only. I was told it's not possible, I would need to purchase a phone as well (wtf?). T-Mobile however was easily able to do it and hooked me up (a German company btw ).
Here, I just pay my monthly bill and buy my phones at full retail price. I still save money compared to contracts including subsidized phones.
Congratulations to your new N6 btw. I hope you'll enjoy it!!
Wall of text may even stop Sparta!
Nice you got them to sell you one though.
Did they have any accessories in store for the phone?
I'm in US Cellular country up here in Maine. I bought my N6 through Motorola and have a Verizon plan, but I walked into the US Cellular store right down my block yesterday to see if they had any accessories. Same thing. The clerks had never heard of it. Then the manager said: "We'll get accessories as soon as it's launched." I told them I was pretty certain it had been launched as it's been available online for a couple of weeks through US Cellular. He just looked at me with a blank stare. Suffice it to say they didn't have any accessories yet!

Yeah I walked in to pick up an N6 today, keeping in mind this is a rather large corporate-owned USCC store in a rather decent sized midwest city, and they only stock the Ballistic case. Fine by me as that's the one I was hoping for, but it's surprising that they only stock one $40 case. Wouldn't have PAID $40 for it, but I had enough points to get it free.
