Phone unresponsive, have to pull battery to boot. - Galaxy S I9000 General

So after convincing a friend to get this phone with Bell he is having this unresponsive issue with the phone. He returned the first phone after 2 days for a replacement as it had locked up several times. The replacement phone is doing the same thing.
Seeing as the second phone is doing the same thing he thought it might be because he is on the edge of the network constantly losing service. I suggested to try replacing the SIM card. Do either of these make sense or did he just get 2 bad phones in a row?
I've had my phone 5 or 6 weeks now and this has happened once.
edit: sorry guys I might not have fully explained what I meant by locking up at first. What I mean is that the phone is on and goes into sleep/stand by normally. Then when you try and wake it there is nothing that works. Non of the buttons will wake up the phone and holding the power button for 10+ seconds doesn't do anything either. I dont think it's a user error as I saw it happen on the second day and had to show him how to take the case and battery out.
I read something similar for a different phone on a different forum where the person called customer service and is sending them a new battery. Maybe he should call samsung if this continues.

User maybe at fault here, He might be doing something he's not telling you or even that he knows he's doing. Try installing a free app called NoBars from market, once no signal is found it won't continuestly poll radio .

Hi, try hold the powerup button till the phone reboot. No need take out battery.

He could just be unlucky. I got through 3 defective handsets in a row before getting one that didn't actually do this.
Also if pressing and holding the power button for 10-15 seconds doesn't reboot the phone (as suggested by lifeisjustgreat), you really do have to pull the battery. And btw, if the only way to revive the device is to pull the battery, that's a sign that it needs returning.

I'm using the bell version as well and starting having the same problem a few days ago after weeks of perfect operation. Turns out it was the tumblr app I'd installed. Once I deleted it the problem disappeared.
Your friend's issue might be a similar problem with an app they installed.

touch screen stops working

Been using mine for a couple of weeks, but just now the touch screen has been acting up. Sometimes it responds sluggishly and sometimes not at all.
At first I thought it was one of my apps running in the background, but even after a soft-reset, the touch screen still doesn't work. Can't even enter the PIN to my sim card.
Found that if I gave the screen a few solid taps here and there, the screen would start working again.
This happen to anyone else?
I've got the same issue. I can't find any reliable way of getting the screen to respond apart from to get someone to call me and then after some bashing on the screen it starts working again. I've even updated to the latest ROM in the hope it would cure the problem - but it didn't. I contacted HTC support they offered to repair the device...

Yep, that happened to me plus the screen started jittering with some weird actions. I sold the device and ordered a new one, to be delivered dec.19.

I've contacted Handtec about the issue, my phone's just marginally inside their 28 day replacement policy so hopefully I can get a new one out of them.
I tried a hard-reset before, didn't fix it. And I've found that if I place my entire palm over the screen and give it a bit of a squeeze then that restores life to the screen for hours or days at a time

Sounds like the connectors under the screen came loose, either because it was dropped or just shouldn't have passed QA. Definitely a candidate for repair/replacement.
By the way, if this happened even after 28 days you would still be covered by warranty...no matter what some dodgy resellers say

Oh of course, but the regular warranty process is to repair the phone. Being so new, I'd want a replacement.
For what it's worth, I posted a message asking about this same fault a couple of weeks ago but with no replies. I emailed HTC and they said it was probably a hardware fault and to either send it to them for repair or contact my supplier (O2). I spoke to O2 and they suggested that it might be because my SIM card is a few years old and suggested trying a new one. I thought this was worth a go so they sent me a new card but the screen still becomes unresponsive and the fault also survives a reset. In fairness to O2, they are now sending me a replacement unit which should arrive on Monday.

The same thing happened to me. I think it was because I left it in my hot car. HTC fixed the problem, for free, inside warranty, and just sent me back my phone 2 days ago. It's even got a brand new screen. NO SCRATCHES>

I sent my back and the first time it came back and worked for a week and then stopped working completely. I sent it back a second time, they paid for shipping and ordered a new screen and replaced the old. Nice thing, I bought the phone used and the warranty was still intact.

HD2 Freezing Please help

I've had my phone for about 6 months. It was working fine, but lately it's been acting really strange. It freezes on boot and get stuck on the "Stick together" screen.
I've tried a HR, Update and it still persists.
I've wanted to flash a custom rom, but the phone also freezes on the boot loader so i can't even get the flash to follow through.
The one time i got the tmobile's latest flash update to work. It rebooted the phone and then the problem was still there. With it getting stuck on the "Stick together" screen.
A few times when i tried booting the phone, the phone vibrated 7 times and then turned off.
I've looked around the forum and searched for quite some time but haven't found anything. (It's a pretty big forum so i may have missed it). I will continue to keep looking but if anything has a fix or can help me please do.
Thanks!
(Glad to finally be part of this community)

Sounds silly but try these two things.
1. There are some pins on the battery that can be easily bent. Inspect them to make sure they're ok. There are usually other symptoms with this though, such as it won't take a charge or won't start at all, just thought I'd mention it.
2. Try it without the SD card in.
Hey, thanks for the reply!
The phone charges fine with the usb cable. It's at full charge right now actually.
I took out the sim card and sd card when i did the HR and before i put those back in, the phone still froze on boot.
Really not sure what's going on, I'm going to try flashing it again when i get home. But last time i tried, it got stuck at 0% and then my phone froze, was scared it was going to brick, but i don't think it did.
Any other insight would be great, i really hope to resolve this issue.
If any other information is needed, please don't hesitate to ask. I can provide as much as possible to get to a conclusion.
Thanks,
-Raymon.
I got the same problem -- freezes and 7 vibrations before it. I made formatting with mtty (task 29 and task2a), it didn't help.
Anybody knows about 7 vibrations signal? Is there leodiag like blackdiag for HD?
That 7 vibrations HAS to mean something...but i'll be damned if I know what. People in both Leo sections keep saying that their phones vibrate 7 times then shut off, and I don't know what that really means....some investigation is in order!
Just got done talking to t-mobile, my replacement is on it's way, still very weird.
Would love to know the solution to this.
Please tell me can I replace my faulty HD2 from T-Mobile? I bought it in Frys without contract and used it with another provider. I never had a T-Mobile contract.

same here, bought the phone on Ebay and i live in Albania.
i have the 7 vibrations and then i have to take off the battery , leave the phone cool down so i can use it again for the next 10-20 minutes and then back to the vibrations
I have the same problem, mostly when i used GPS application, the phone reboot then vibrate one on th esplash screen then 7 times and freeze, the solution for this is to remove the battery for 10-20 minutes, pray and put it back, it is very annoying. I have this problem with ROM including the stock ROM.
hd2 freezes on BOOT!!!
try to take out the sim and leave the SD card in you will notice that it will work much better and get past the stick together screen ..mine does the same thing i think i may theSIM card but who know??
Nice suggestion, but totally useless.
I think these 7 vibrations means fault in NAND operation, but didn't find any approves.
I've this problem too.
7 vibration and freeze.
I've try update new radio, task29, new custom rom but nothing better.
Did anyone found any solutions, Please share.
Thank you.
mine got same problem.. i put the hd2 in freezer (without battery) for 3 minutes, then take it out.. put battery.. and my hd2 can start.. but after a while, when the cold is gone.. my hd2 will off it self.. hehehe
Any solutions?
I have the same symptoms, though the vibrations aren't that frequent, as much as stucking is..
I am not in a position to get a replacement, what do I need to fix?
This seems to be a heating problem, the freezer solution seems to work

[POSSIBLE SOLUTION] Desire HD Randomly Turning OFF

Follow the below steps if your device is turning off or rebooting randomly. If the problem still isn't fixed then it is time to send it to HTC.
Note that the SIM card seemed to be the problem for most people (including me) - making sure it was 100% inserted into it's socket seemed to fix the problem.
1) Make sure battery & battery cover are seated properly (replace battery with a known working one if you can)
2) Make sure SIM inserted 100% and SIM cover is seated properly (important)
3) Restore your phone back to stock RUU
4) Do not subject the phone to extreme temperatures
5) You could also try putting a piece of paper between battery and battery cover to force it to make contact with the phone power terminals (don't cover up battery cover gold contacts though)
If you have done all of the above and your phone is still rebooting and/or turning off randomly then you should send it to HTC. No use faffing around trying to fix it if it's a hardware fault.
Sending your phone to HTC:
You should keep a diary of: How many times your phone reboots/turns off, when it happens, what you were doing when it happened, if the room temperature was warm/cold, telling them you followed the above steps, etc.
If you suspect your phone has restarted but you didn't know when it happened (e.g. after waking up) you can find out how long your phone has been on for since last boot, by going to Settings>About Phone>Battery and taking a look at the 'up time' - an up time of 00:05:35 indicates the phone last booted up (or restarted in this case) 5 hours and 35 minutes ago.
This will really help HTC and hopefully make things go much faster.
This is getting annoying now... the phone seemed like it was in an endless bootloop after it decided to randomly turn off today (kept turning off then I would have to turn it on again). I flashed my nandroid backup of my original Rom but that didn't fix it.. infact, it even turned off while I was using the phone (as opposed to turning off only when the screen is off).
I took off the sim cover and noticed the sim was sticking out a bit so I pushed it in. No turn offs for now, but I hope that was the problem.. I really don't want to go through the hassle of a warrentee claim.
hi,
are you sure you got a "HTC Desire HD" ???
and not a "HTC Desire" only ?
Sounds like a known issue with some "HTC Desire"....
greets
Alex
Hi, yes it is a desire hd (ace).
I have flashed an RUU for my device, which has removed the clockwork-mod, custom ROM, and restored S-ON (gotten rid of ENG HBoot and restored normal HBOOT)
If my phone still randomly turns off, even once after this, then I am filing a warranty claim. This is unacceptable, I can't even rely on it for waking me up in the morning because it might decide to turn off in the middle of the night (and it has done that before)

The general idea is, if they cannot tell its been hacked then its in warranty. But restoring the phone to stock wipes out all hacks anyway so its fine. Just make sure you do it before sending it to HTC. Back in the hd2 forums, we would only flash stock bootloader over hacked one for 'warranty purposes'.

Hi,
I have the exact same problem, which is very annoying : sometimes, when I press power button to put the screen on, it reboots (not fast boot, but I can't say if it's a real reboot either, it seems longer, don't really know... ).
It happens also in the middle of the night, the phone does nothing and then it reboots, sometimes several times in the night (wakes me with the vibration sound and the white light from the screen)
It seems to be random, but more and more often by now.
I'm new to Android (this is my first smartphone), I've been using my DHD for a month and I am very glad with it, except for this big problem
I use Stock HTC ROM (no root yet).
I went to the shop where I had bought it and was told that it seems to be a software problem, so an update shoud be ok.
I already had the 2 OTA updates and tried a hard reset but still have the problem.
Does somebody know how to fix this ? Thanks
BTW, I asked HTC by email this morning, waiting for the answer. I'll update you if they can fix the problem.
Hmm.. my phone doesnt reboot.. it just powers off. But ever since flashing a stock HTC RUU (which removes ALL HACKS, root, S-OFF, ClockworkMod, custom kernal, custom ROM, custom radio, etc etc) it has worked fine. But I also noticed my SIM card was sticking out slightly (approx 1mm) so i pushed it in (and then proceeded to flash Stock ROM).
Try making sure your SIM is all the way in, and try reseating your SIM and battery covers.
I did a test with my phone, exposed the battery to cold for awhile and placed it in my phone, no turn offs so the cold for me isnt a reason.
Ok, thanks. I just tried that, and now I just have to hope it works ;-)
Well, when the screen is off and I press the power button it boots so i can't know whether the phone was on or off, it seemed to be the same problem as yours.
I also had the reboot problem, it might be a diferent problem.
Now i hope it's solved, thanks to you I'll update this thread if i have something new.

Hope it works I haven't had a single turn off ever since I made sure the SIM was all the way in.
Keep us updated, maybe this is a common problem
I'm just realising I didn't explain that I only used at first the second part of your advice : cleaning everything, sim and battery, and putting them back, carefully and checking they're in place.
I'm sorry to say that it didn't work
I keep in mind the other advice you gave, rooting and using a different ROM.
As I'm not used to it, I think I'll wait for HTC's answer to the email I sent before I try this (in case I have to return it, I don't want to have to unroot the device, I don't know enough about that yet ). So if they can't solve the problem, I will try diffent ROMs.
It doesn't seem to be a common problem, but if it is, maybe HTC will publish an OTA update
My first 2 DHD's used to randomly reboot at times, but on my second DHD I noticed the problem was indeed my SIM card not being inserted far enough. If that is clearly not the problem in your case, I'd just try to get it exchanged for a new one.

Thanks for mentioning this!
Ever since making sure my SIM was inserted all of the way (even if it was out by 1mm) my phone has never turned off, it has even gone the longest without turning off now! Good to know someone can clarify it was indeed the SIM card.
@ sand1011
Sorry to hear your problem was not fixed. It appears your problem is caused by something else, and since you are running a stock HTC Rom I cannot really say it is a software issue.
I suggest you pursue a warranty claim with HTC after you receive your email from them. Please also post HTC's response in this thread as well, I would like to see what they have on the issue. Remember to delete any personal information from the email before you post it here. Thanks
Thank you both for your answers.
You're right, I'll return/exchange the phone if HTC has nothing to fix it. (I'm not sure I can have a new one directly because it's been a month since I bought it, it could be too long)
(btw, I'm a bit relieved to see I'm not the only one having this problem)
Sure, I'll let you know what HTC say (I guess if I have no email answer, I'll call them, I think there was a french phone number on the website)
I too have had this very annoying issue. I can confirm that it is fixed my pushing the Sim Card all the way in. When the phone is on, try removing the Sim Card and you will notice the phone turns off. I have put a small amount of tape over the Sim to prevent it from moving out.
I also used a small piece of tape to secure my sim card and it has never shut down since.
Good to see that most people have resolved this issue by making sure their SIM card is inserted properly.
The sim card has to be inserted all the way in? But I met with some resistance when I'm trying to.push it in. Anyone got any pictures on how far the sim card can be pushed in?
Cos I encountered a reboot when I called someone today.
Sent from my Desire HD using Tapatalk
Anyone has any ideas that when I call out and the phone reboot is due to the sim card not inserting all the way in?

My DHD has also been shutting down randomly recently, especially this morning. I justjust checked the SIM card and it was about 1mm out... Will keep an eye on it this afternoon and the next couple of days...!

Dell Finally Admits Freezing Issue

Well I was on the phone today with Dell Mobilty support telling them that my 3rd relacement is still freezing up and I want it replaced AGAIN..
The lady told me that they were made aware of the problem that people are having on Thursday (Finally) and that it has been escalated, and tht they are working on fixing it. She said I could go ahead and order my 4th replacement now or I could wait for a couple weeks and call back to see if it has been fixed and than order it.
I chose to order it now as I just assume that they relace the unit every week untill they get it right.
I thought the freezing problem had something to do w/ WP7 OS... Whats the built date on your 3rd unit. Please keep me updated about this issue.
Thanks.
The freeze issue is a Dell problem.
And the build date of the 3rd unit is 1-13-11

I've got the HD2 running the hacked WP7 ROM from DFT on a SanDisk class 4 8GB card... and I can tell you that it doesn't have the same freezing problem as the DVP. I have never, ever seen the People tile fill up all nine squares.
Seems like they need to fix how their 512mb of RAM is being addressed by the OS at a fundamental level. If one part of the OS is expecting the whole thing but another part is only providing half of it, that would explain a lot.

Is yours 16 or 8 gig?
16gig...
My 4th DVP will be here tomorrow
I'm on my second 16GB and I'm not having as many freezing issues. It seems like when I am on certain WiFi routers it will freeze more than my home router.
The only issues I'm always having is the Bluetooth not staying connected to my car or to a headset.
I have the HD2 now a HD7 that works flawlessly in my car so I hope an update will fix this.
I get a similar issue, though it seems to be worse in some phones than others--namely, when left overnight, the phone eventually "crashes" so that hitting the power button just flashes the three lights, but doesn't actually bring the screen back on.
Anyone else having a similar issue?
Also having the same freezing/crashing issue here. The only way to get the phone back is to yank the battery. I just spoke with Dell tech and they tell me they can't ship out new phones anymore because of this being a known issue. That I will have to wait for the March update that is supposed to fix things.
I also let her know about the RAM issue. I am only showing 225.02, and she said they ship with 256, not 512. I asked her why they specced it out at 512 on the site, as well as Msoft and every review, and she simply said she understands it has 256, and that it is what it is. Nothing I can do about it.
It's always good to have a company know what is going on with their products
Do carriers have the final say on what phones can receive the WP7 updates? I'm a little worried that T-Mobile may not push the updates into our Dell Venue Pro phones. I'm not 100% convinced T-Mobile supports this phone, despite the phone supporting T-Mobile's 3G bands.

They can block one update, but the next one has to be released, according to Microsoft. However MS initially promised that carriers would NOT have any power over updates so to be honest, it seems the carriers are the ones in total control of updates so anything could happen.

03/23/2011: I have been using the phone for about 22 hours with no problems. Before going to sleep, I never did put the phone to charge but the following morning the phone still had around 75% battery life. So I decided to have it charge for about an hour before leaving. When I went to check on the battery, the screen did not power back on. As Desynthesis mentioned, hitting the power button just once would just flash the lights of the back, windows and search icon. I held down the power button but neither would it shut down so I had to pull the battery. Is anyone continuously experiencing this issue on their Dell Venue Pro?

It happens once in a while on my otherwise stable phone. I can reboot it by holding power for about 10 or 20 seconds though - usually until the keyboard light turns off. I've never had to pull the battery.

Thanks pjfan75, I'll make sure to give that a try if it occurs again. I do have one question though. Would it matter if I have a password lock on my phone for this method to work?

Not sure. Are you able to power off the phone if it's locked with a password otherwise?

So I've tested it out and the phone does shut off even when it's password locked. So if the issue with the screen occurs again. I'll just use the method you mentioned earlier. Thanks!

S7 Edge completely dead

Hello everyone,
I've got a huge problem with my s7 edge. It started betweend first and second week of usage of my s7 edge, phone got totally freezed and only volume down + power could do something with my phone. After few weeks later, freezes were very annoying, very often (2-10 times per day) and it took longer to reboot my phone. I decided to download oficcial unbranded software from sammobile, I've flashed my phone with 5 files using odin and do full wipe. When my phone booted it was ok for maybe 2 hours and again, freeze! Ok, so press volume down + power... It boots! But after few hours later, (phone was 80%+ battery) I tried to check recent notifications, took my phone, pressed power button... and nothing happens. Trying to hold volume down + power for longer than 10s and also nothing happens. Phone is not charging and when connected to computer, I can hear a sound that something is connected, but windows says that my device is not working properly. When holding volume down + power, I can hear again sound of disconnecting and connecting device again. It's now almost 24hrs from this freeze. Phone is completely dead. After I got up from bed, pressed volume down + power again and I saw GALAXY S7 edge on my screen, but again, freeze and nothing happens for maybe 10 minutes, so again, volume down + power and phone is dead again. Nothing happens...
If you experienced simillar problem or have any solutions, please help!
Cheers!

Since flashing a new software didn't help then it is definitely a hardware problem. If it is a defective unit then it should be repaired or replaced for free by the repair shop, assuming you haven't rooted your phone.
I haven't rooted my device, only flashed with latest official not branded samsung rom. I left it to my carrier on warrianty, waiting for response. Up to 2 weeks...

Had that problem with my Note 4 bro. It was a broken EMMC memory chip and Samsung should repair it by swaping the motherbord under warranty. If you Rooted it or tripped knox, like i did, than you have a problem coz they will ask you to pay for the repairs. If that happenes remind them this.. I wish i knew this before i sold my note 4 for scrap.

Good luck.
Time for small update,
thanks for links TheOne741. Cellular operator had sent my phone to authorised service, but they offered somethink like 70USD (different currencies) for repair, when new mainboard for S7 Edge is around 400$! I declined their proposal and now my phone is in other service, I want them to replace it by new one, still waiting! Hope for quick response from this second service point.
I had a Galaxy i5700 a lot time ago and I managed to install android into de SD and the simptoms u are describing are the same that happened to me when the SD had bad sectors before completely dying...
I tried removing sd card and sim card too, nothing changes.

Samsung ditched eMMC and went to UFS. while it may be a memory issue, its not eMMC.
Don't pay anything for Your phone. I've had one really sh***y service that told me the sim card slot is broken (on a device that I didn't even know that it has a sim card slot/tablet) and now I have to pay 100% same amount of money as the value of my whole tablet. That device wasn't even rooted. Nothing. I even had a sh***y insurance that didn't help me either. So I was left there with a choice of paying (device was around 100 usd) 100 usd(for a sim card slot repair that I don't even have idea if it exists, I've had phones with broken sim card slots and they were working fine) or just buy a new one. So I decided to call a "shopping lawyer"(I just payed for the call) I've no idea how to properly say that in english, sorry guys. And then the lawyer told me that I need to say that if they will not fix it on warranty then I'll go to court. Week later I got a letter that my device will be repaired as soon as they can do it, and that they are really sorry. After 14 days I got my tablet back, fully working.. well. They scratched the screen a lot so I just sold it later. Kinda sad with the scratches cause it was a really great GPS. 7 inches.. big screen.
So in conclusion.
Don't pay anything. Just use the warranty. Even if the device was rooted You have a full right to a warranty repair. And since You didn't root Your device then You're fine. It's a hardware defect and they have to pay for it and fix it.
Yup, I did not send my phone on warranty but on suretyship because my phone was only around month old! And it is obviously hardware problem, but first service tried to scam me. I have been reading tons of articles about scratching screens, breaking plastic frames, resending "repaired" laptops without few parts or even charger from very first service that my phone was sent to. And for that I took my phone away from them in a blink of an eye. Now I'm just waiting for expertise or replacement from other service.
I'm having a similar issue... hope somebody has an answer
Quick update after 40 days without phone. Motherboard is replaced. Not a whole device....
Now I want a IP68 standard confirmation. Authorised service doesn't want to give me any kind of document that confirms dust and waterproof (it should mean that my phone is assembled correctly!)
I won't sign any document that I received my phone without this.
What should I do? Where I can get any document about IP68 confirmation? Should I send my phone to another service just to confirm IP68 standard?
Once ur phone has been opened the ip68 cannot be restored unless Samsung is doing the seal.
Trimis de pe al meu SM-N9005 folosind Tapatalk
I received my phone with confirmation of all norms and standards that producent delivers. It doesn't have any signs of disassembling. Like new one. 37 days of usage and 40 days of servicing. Nice ratio
Thanks for help and information!
