[Q] Blacklist a Hot Spot? - Vibrant General

Is it possible to "blacklist" a wifi hot spot?
There is a hotspot near my office that authenticates through a web page instead of by wep or wpa. As I move around sometimes it is the more powerful and the wifi switches to it, instead of using one of the hotspots that it has cached authentication for. This mean I don't get email until I manually switch hotspots (or deal with the auth web page).

Forcing Internet connection type

I configured my private wireless network, and the needed configuration for my cellular carrier web connection.
The issue is that whenever I am trying to surf to any webpage using my wireless LAN, my trinity always trying to connect to the cellular network, without using the available wireless connection. If I'm trying to cancel the conection process, it stopped but I can't surf anywhere.
Any ideas how to force the trinity to use the wireless network when available?
Thanks,
Amir.
In your connections configuration, create a new connection and do not add any entries to the Modem Section. Just configure the Proxy setting according to your ISP requirements. You have to change the connections configuration ach time you want a different connection to the internet. This you can do easily by creating different connctions for different situations.

Randy
It sounds as if your connection to the WLAN Router isn't being recognised.
1st thing to try is to go into the WLAn control panel, and in the Power tab, make sure the slider is fully to the left for max performance.
In the Network Cards CP, see if your router is listed, and whether Available or Unavailable.
Recheck the security settings- are you using WEP or WPA? Does your router have any Range Extender features- if so, turn them off.
Once you have a valid WLAN connection, the PPC will use that in preference to the GPRS, as long as you have WLAN conneced before opening PIE, and as long as there is no current GPRS activity when you open PIE (I find that if my Exchange Server is connecting via GPRS, then WLAN won't connect till the data session has completed)
For a quick way to force GPRS off, then on as needed, look for a great free app called Bandswitch. This allows you to force the P3600 to use GSM or 3G if needed to conserve power, and also to quickly enable/disable the various GPRS connections.

Problem with DNS?!

Hi there, I'm having problem connecting to the internet using WIFI on my Tornado smartphone (SP5m)... it always connects but takes a while to locate the url, it says "Locating..." in Internet Explorer for a long time and then finally open up the url. To me, it looks like a DNS issue?!
And that's using my own WIFI router at home with a DSL line (5 Mbits), no firewall on it, etc.
But whenever I'm connected to any other WIFI access point (e.g. coffee shops, etc), web pages and other internet stuff would load and open as quick as any WIFI laptop, any thoughts??
Thank you all for your time,
highmighty
Could it be because my personal wifi connection uses wpa encryption as oppose to no encryption at all (like in coffee shops or elsewhere)?
I wouldn't have thought it would be anything to do with the WPA encrpytion.
I sometimes get Locating... in PIE and it hangs, then eventually appears with a DNS error.
In my case it is because PIE is trying to load the page, but at the same time the device looses the connection to the Wireless AP because it's lost signal or whatever and as a result gets a DNS error.
On my end it can't be related to my device loosing the connection to the wireless AP because I'm siting next to my wireless router and the page will ALWAYS finally load up after spending couple of seconds on "Locating...". I temporarely fixed it by assigning a manual IP/subnet/gateway/dns instead of using DHCP to connect to my personnal wireless AP, now web pages are loading super fast, same as any laptop or desktop machine.
Still unsolved as to why it's doing this? Why in PIE using DHCP it stays a long time on "Locating..." while in Opera for example, and using the same DHCP settings, it loads in a jiffy?!
DNS Problem
Hello... I had the same problem and the way to solve it is assigning a DNS server to your WiFi Connection:
Start->Settings->Connections Tab->WiFi->Network Adapters Tab-> Select IEEE 802.11b/g->Name Servers Tab
And write down the following numbers:
DNS: 80.58.61.250
Alt DNS: 80.58.61.254
Leave the WINS and AltWINS empty.
Good luck!
Cheers

Basic query - wireless internet settings 02 Atom

Apologies but I am verynew to the Atom and networking. Could somebody please assist with a simple to follow list of steps for me to connect to the internet at an internet cafe. I turn on the wifi and it will generally stay on for a short time but when I try to use internet explorer to get to gmail (or any other site) it comes back with a message that the connection was lost. I know there was no problem with the wireless connection in the cafe as my pc was downloading at the time. many thanks
Hi,
First of all, are you able to connect to the Internet from your device at home?
....or is it the case that you don't have an access point at home and simply want to connect to the Internet from an Internet cafe or WiFi hotspot?
Generally, if you have correctly configured (set-up) your Atom correctly, to connect, using WiFi, that setup should still work outside of your home, assuming you have a free WiFi hotspot. The only difference being that this time, it is not using your own access point. All you need to do is simply to connect (as you were doing).
The same goes with an Internet cafe, as long as the routers in the Internet cafe are setup to allow connectivity from un-named devices (such as your Atom), in adition to connectivity from their own specific computers (hence you were able to download, using the computers at the Internet Cafe).
The keyword here is OPEN - be it at an Internet cafe, WiFi hotspot or whatever. It's got to be open (and free), before you can connect and surf the Internet, like you were trying to do.
Failing that, you'll have to subscribe to the service provider before you can use their WiFi hotspot (e.g. at an Internet cafe, Macdonald's, hotel, airport) or any other public place.
Your device should be able to see all nearby networks. It should also indicate the strength of the signal according to the number of bars next to the network. Additionally, it will show, by way of a padlock, that it is a secure network. No padlock means it is an open one.
If there are open networks within your vicinity that do not require authentication, with a strong signal, then all you need to do is to click connect and you're on - away and surfing.
However, if the signal is weak, (assuming that it does not require authentication), then, you simply would not be able to connect to that network.
Try and figure out from here, as to why you weren't able to connect at the Internet Cafe.
Hope this helps.

VPN calling data number while connected to wifi

I have a 6800 with Verizon and I attend Penn State at the main campus. We have group authenticated VPN security for our on campus wireless. I downloaded BlueFire mobile VPN because it has group authentication capabilities. I connect to the Penn State wireless and then connect with the VPN client, however I notice that my phone calls the 777 number to access the VPN server for some reason, even though I have wireless. I messed around with connection settings, but got no results. My issue with this is that I don't have any data plan because I don't want to pay for it and the data call eats up my minutes.
Does anyone know how to properly set up the connection settings so that I don't pour money into Verizon's pockets?
Also, I don't think this is possible but I might as well ask... is there any way to use the VPN software included with WM to connect to group authenticated VPN servers?
Any clues?
Have you tried turning off data connection?

[Q] Proxies and User Auth for Wifi connections on Android 2.0 and beyond

Hey, I've been facing this issue for a while, and I've come to the conclusion that android doesn't support this feature, so, is there a workaround for this?
The problem:
On my workplace, there are open wifi hot spots, but to get access to the Internet, all Internet connections must go through a proxy, with user authentications restrictions, I can connect to the Hotspot, but I cant set the Ip for the proxy, not even the port of the proxy.
So, is there a solution around for this I've missed?
