More Android phones for 2010 - EVO 4G General

For the people waiting to see what else is coming in Q4 for Android....crap. Go ahead and get the EVO of epic, or wait till next year.
http://newsroom.sprint.com/press_kits.cfm?presskit_id=17

Samsung...yuck.

those are pretty ****ty. Although if I had to i would get the sanyo

The transform fixes what the intercept should have been.
The Lg...a $50 android? I think it's good news personally. not for me, but think how many hands will grab that. I just hope it functions ok for a regular user who only wants a cool phone and an app or three. If it sucks too bad, it could be bad for android.

just read the page rather than looked at the phone only. The phones aren't the only ones coming out q4. They are just the phones that will feature sprint id. There might be other phones as well that don't have sprint id.

AT&T's First Android Phone, The Backflip

So, I know this isn't about the HTC Hero or anything, but if it needs to be moved or deleted so be it. It is off topic. I just wanted to discuss the first Android phone on AT&T. I think it just launched over the weekend. So, specs are very, how should I put it, out-dated for being a newly released phone.
528 MHz Qualcomm MSM7201a(same speed as our HTC Hero which came out over a year ago. Well, the GSM one anyways.)
172mb of storage for apps.(I think we have 159)
3.1 inch screen. (We have 3.2, yes?)
And get this, it only has Android 1.5!
Talk about a Backflip that lands you on your head. But that's not bugs me the most about AT&T's first Android phone...Get this, apps outside the Android Market are blocked/disabled. Yes, that's right. Disabled. Talk about iPhone mindset. That's kinda against what Android is about.
What do you guys think? AT&T trying to ruin people's first Android experience so they will switch to the iPhone?
**** that phone...
they've also made Yahoo its default search engine and email provider afaik

lol, thats funny
It's a POS... thank GOD I jumped to Sprint to get the Hero and didn't wait for whatever ATT was going to offer for Android
I work for at&t
Motorola was at are center showing off the phone and the funny part was the gentleman that was showcasing the phone didn't know anything other then what was on the promo sheet.... the phone is just like tue clic from t mobile
I didn't like it at all personally
Look at it this way. If they didn't "disable" the out side apps thing, they would then be competeing with them selves. Also with yahoo, ATT has a deal with Yahoo to use them as there primary search for Mobile phones.
They released a crumby phone so Apple couldn't get to pissy with them over competition. Welcome to corporate America. Same stuff goes on where I work on a smaller scale. We will sell 3rd party hardware that is crappier than our hardware. It makes us look real good and gives a reason to charge our premium.
I put disable in qoutes because an advanced user can push the APK's with ADB.
EDIT:
I do think the track pad navigation on the back is a cool idea, though I think partially ripped off from Apple's plans for the next ICrap. It is supposed to have a touch sensitive back if the rumors are true. Yet another law suit for Apple to push out I'm sure.
It only gets 1.5? Ouch. It would not be to bad of a phone if it wasn't for that. Hopefully they can root the sucker and upgrade it
I doubt they are trying to ruin the "first time android" experience. I switched from the iPhone to the android, because well... I just prefer it a lot better.
The main thing I'm jealous about though that AT&T is going to get are the new shipments of Dell Mini 5's. That's going to be amazing.
i read they gimped that phone at&t
AT&T is ****ing retarded. If I were Google, I would pull all there phones (though it's not a very good marketing thing to do, I'd still do it). I can't believe AT&T would have the audacity to cripple an Android phone and then on top of that, decide to put Yahoo search in place of Google search on an Android device, what retards. Thank God I'm on Sprint and have a Hero and can look forward to the amazing Supersonic and what not.
Fail
AT&T = Fail
's great, I'm supposed to be selling the iPhone at work, and I'm like "why would I? with the advent of Android it's now obsolete!"
I am now in an all android household. I have the hero, one roommate has the mytouch on t-mobile and the other one just got the backflip as he has been desperate to upgrade on att. Feeling bad for him now. Did not know the phone would be so gimped
out of the box. Thought yahoo search was the only impairment it would have. Tried to get him to switch to Sprint but he wanted to stay loyal. This is the reward att gives him!

iPhone. Because you're too stupid to do that.
Wont 95% of users care less that yahoo is the default search and that they can only install applications from the marketplace?
My wife is due for an upgrade and shes debating between the Sprint Palm Pre or the backflip on ATT and although ATT's @#!& actions are infuriating to hardcore users like us I think the average user with their average interest wont care a bit. It seems that the back flip will still be a better device than the iphone right?
It does feel like they did that to keep Apple happy. But again, why the backflip in specs? The phone barely beats our phone in memory....and our phones are "old" now. I think they should do it right. They could have made a lot of money with a better spec'ed phone. Every review says not to buy it. Why not sell the N1? Hmmm. I guess ATT likes their noses covered in a brown substance.
I would NEVER buy that. If I wanted an Android on AT&T I'd get a G1, root it, unlock it, and put an AT&T sim in it.

I could definitely see this as a deliberate attempt to hurt android. AT&T has been making wheel barrels full of cash off the iPhone and have no reason to be interested in open technology like Android.
In 6 months AT&T will point to sales numbers and say "Android just isn't preforming, people don't want it" I think they want it to fail, that or they're totally incompetent morons.

Will be getting this

So I have two heros, two moments, gonna sell the heros and moments, gonna get a nexus, supersonic and a winmo 7 phone...i had our sprint rep put us on the list. so well see what develops. how about you.
I'm planning on getting it. Hopefully the day it comes out!
If they come out on ATT it will be mine
Oh I wwill be getting it soon as possible! Just waiting for the date to start saving, and upgarde isnt till oct
got this on my list... TP2 will be secondary now
can not waittttt
Me too
Obvious choice...
Windows Mobile has no future, all my current programs will not run on any 2011 phone.
iPhone sucks, I'm no 3 year old kid to have Apple watching over what I install, what I read and what sites I visit
Windows Phone 7 = iPhone
So that leaves Android.
And now we have this beast with even better hardware than HD2 and Android 2.1...
Waiting for it to be available on Europe.
I will definitely have one. Hopefully I can flash WinM6.5 on this beast as well. Somebody will definitely have the HSPL ready for sure.
I am so leaving tmobile for this phone!
Definitely getting this. Upgrade comes up in October. I can't wait to get my hands on such a powerful phone.
I cant wait til they give us a release date and price. i will be getting it first day. Maybe earlier if best buy does the rewards zone thing again..... June 5 is my upgrade date. tick tock

I'm pretty sure google is MUCH more interested in what you search, sites you visit, apps you install, calls you make, texts you receive and locations you visit.
Apple doesn't make their money from a huge advertising network and doesn't make apps that track all that stuff for you already. Don't kid your self google is watching!
I just happen to be an exhibitionist so I don't mind Can't wait to get my EVO!

Funny thing is...

Everyone is impatiently looking forward to Froyo coming to our beloved phones, BUT I have to say that while it would be nice, I am most looking forward to gingerbread.
Rumors are the vanilla gingerbread will be released in the next 2 months-ish, well, according to this link.
Just wondering everyone elses thoughts on gingerbread and what it could possibly mean to our phones. Is Froyo even worth getting worked up over when it is already going to be outdated in the next few months?
It would be nice if they did just skip froyo and went straight to gingerbread, but I'm pretty sure that won't be the case. More likely that they will release froyo in a month or so (or by tomorrow like everyone said), and a gingerbread update will take another 6 months.
I think everybody's just a bit angry that Froyo isn't on the Galaxy S line when it's on every other new phone that's out or about to come out now which is making it seem like we're all super excited for it when we're really just super anxious to have phones that can do what all the other phones can do right now. Hell even my G1 has Froyo (via CM6).
I am indeed super excited to Gingerbread. I can't wait to see what it can do so I can flaunt it in the face of iSlaves.
I can see that, and it is true. The way I see it though is that once GingerBread is out, it's going to be so much easier for all manufacturers to update their phones. Mostly due to the fact that each UI (Sense/Touchwiz/Xperia) will simply be an over lay on the phone, keeping the back end of things intact.
Galaxy S will not see an update pass 2.2. Samsung don't like producing updates because that means financial allocation spent on already sold equipment. They're going to have a new Galaxy phone, and that phone will have Android 2.+ or 3.0.
Samsung even had a survey about whether customers expect updates, even if that meant they had to PAY EXTRA for them. I took the survey, and got my $20 mailed to me within 2wks. I found it nuts that in the survey, they asked "how long from purchase would you expect updates to you phone?" The first choice was 2 months, the last choice was 2 years. To me that survey exposed their thinking about upgrades.
I am going to agree. I don't think that Samsung will update past 2.2
Look how long Froyo is taking. HTC and Motorola have already put Froyo on most of their Android phones while Samsung can't do it for their one device.
I bought my Vibrant 3rd party, off-contract because I expect to purchase a 3.x Android device in 2011, and I don't want to be tied to a 2-yr agreement with a phone that gets shoddy support.
I will probably aim for an HTC device
Well I never wanted froyo anyway. I always wanted to get gingerbread cause froyo its just a minor release anyway compared to gingerbread.
i have to agree with that last post. my vibrant works great as is and the way i see it, the big signifigant changes will come with 3.0.
and to comment on nexgins post, i believe that we will have 3.0, while it may not be official i'm sure some it will be ported over somehow.

This is unacceptable.

The fact that we were promised a piece of software that should only require minor tweaking is absolutely unacceptable. I use linux for almost everything and that being said I know a bit about rolling out releases of different distros and how to integrate them into different systems. Android is a linux based software, (Opensource might I add), the only reason we don't have the bleeding edge is because Samsung needs to put their horrible UI into it, TW. I don't care about "Touchwiz" its badly programmed and anyone who has taken basic programing courses could program a GUI for this phone that puts it to shame. I'm sick of dealing with leaked versions of things that I was promised. No offense to any of the Devs, you guys are incredible and should be paid to roll out these releases rather than waiting for these bad companies with their "programmers" to try to find out how to use a toilet. we should have a stable build of gingerbread by now and I'm sorry but building a driver/hardware file for a computer isnt that hard, nor should it be so for Samsung since they placed all the parts into the phone. What do they have like one person with half a brain trying to reprogram the whole OS using Assembly code? Do they not realize the OS its self is open source and you can mod the code for each phone?? Both sprint and Samsung are horrible companies, if Froyo doesn't show soon, I will never touch a single one of their products after my contract is up, which is soon. Sorry, I just needed to rage. Hard.
Im with you man. Samsung stinks! I traded my EVO for a Epic and I have regretted it since. It has the best hardware out there and ZERO support. They are too slow about upgrades that are available and even lower end phones have gotten Froyo. They should skip Froyo and be first to drop Gingerbread. But, that would be too much like right for Samsung who sold the phones then dropped all of its users like a bad habit. If they dont do something soon Ill never buy another phone from Samsung. I dont blame Sprint because dropping updates is not on them. The EVO will probably be the next to get Froyo because that's the phone that Sprint has thrown it all in with.
Actually, I'm pretty sure it's Sprint's fault for the delayed release. Sprint putting in their bloatware is the most likely reason we have not received the OTA yet. While Samsung is at fault for not getting it out sooner, it is Sprint that is causing this delay.
All companies are like this its not just sprint or samsung... I've been with every carrier except att and I've tried all three major cellphone brands and they've all lagged behind like this.
Until android is less fragmented, (think its getting there), and carriers realize their UIs only frustrate consumers and there are better ways to advertise/garnish more fundage from existing customer base; we will face "version lag" all the time regardless of carrier/phone.
Just my $0.02

I think saying Gingerbread should be available now is pushing it..at this stage Gingerbread is for "developers"...I'm not saying that its not stable or anything, but it requires time to optimize for the hardware at hand...no phone ever gets a new Android OS until a few months after it came out..other the developer phones...
As for Froyo..according to samsung they gave it to the carriers..yes they have been slow overall but considering they are releasing 2.2.1 and not just 2.2 puts them there...
We know 100% that touchwiz is not the issue at this point as the leaks are running touchwiz just fine..
Either way there is still hope for end of the year update..as next playbook comes out on the 29th

I haven't heard any body mention this in the forums but I was reading an article that said sprint was bringing their new crappy sprint ID software to the new epic update and I guarantee that's probably what's causing the delay

Sprint "bloatware" is only a few apps worth a few megs. I think the only bloatware would be TW. I will never understand why is it so hard to port, say, the g2 build of android to our phone or any other android phone considering its pure vanilla with a few apps installed extra.. but that's why I'm no dev lol

right its not like ANY of the us carriers have gotten froyo on the galaxy s, something is seriously WRONG HERE and samsung is to blame! the phone should had froyo on it since DAY1! the nexus s had gingerbread since day 1 why didnt the galaxy s. regardless the epic should have froyo on it and if they want to release gingerbread later then go ahead. release froyo already! the phone never realized its potential. making us wait this long and i mean all of AMERICA is going to hurt samsung in the long run. i for one WILL NEVER BUY ANOTHER SAMSUNG PHONE AGAIN! tweet email samsung and tell them them same.
btw if u bought a vibrant, how pissed off r u that the nexus s came out!

I for one know that this all falls on Samsung and has nothing to do with Sprint. I have an EVO since launch day and have gotten 4 updates including Froyo about a month after release of the phone. Your Epics came out about a week or two after we got Froyo and Samsung has been promising ever since. Google other Samsung phones and you will see this is a trend with this company. The Galaxy S line over seas are not carried by Sprint and they just started getting Froyo Open your eyes its Samsung. No Froyo on T-Mobile, Verizon or At&t

Exactly. Very well said. This is a samsung issue and sprint has nothing to do with it. If that was the case then when the Evo got Froyo it would have probably been delayed also. I am only posting here because I was considering getting a epic but with all this delay and lack of support, I think I will have to re-think that. Everyone said from day one that Samsung would not support the phone and it has been proven true. Just a note on the delay, I have to say that the update was out for the vibrant and it was bricking phones. That shows how good the developers are over at samsung. They can't even program their own product. It's a shame because it's such a nice phone and the keyboard was the icing on the cake. Oh well.

They are both at fault actually. Samsung was slow to release the update to carriers and now they are being slow to release it to the end user. SGS devices in europe have had the update since november.
As to the evo issue, sprint considers the evo its flag ship device and as such makes sure it is up to date whereas they have made it abundantly clear they don't give a single flying **** about the epic so there is no incentive to update.

[RANT]You got what you paid for.

I've only had this Epic for almost a month and am very satisfied with it so far. But its getting pretty old looking on xda everyday to see someone new complaining about not having Froyo. You got what you paid for people, you bought a epic with 2.1 eclair on it, do you buy windows xp and then when windows 7 comes out you complain they won't upgrade you for free? There will always be something better and something new out there or up and coming you can't expect companies to sit there and keep working on things of the past they have to make money as well and they have to compete with each other and try to stay on top. I'm not saying I don't think they shouldn't release it for us I'm just saying you realy can't blame them for moving on with other phones as well. And if you think 2.2 is gonna make your phone that much better then go get a vibrant from tmobile bc I put 2.2 on my girlfriends phone last week and it didn't do much of anything for it, its just software sure your battery is a little better or the system runs a little smoother your not changing what you physically have the hardware is what it is and you knew all of this before buying the phone and if you didn't then you had 30 days to do some research and return it to sprint.

Alright, I'll bite.
most of us did not buy our epic's having seen a forum full of people dissatisfied with samsung's ability to upgrade their phones. I for one bought my phone on launch day. August 31st 2010. It was a sunny day, there was a nice breeze. I was young without a care in the world. I saw a phone with very formidable hardware and better yet, a promise from samsung that the device would see 2.2 in the very "near" future.
Now I don't know what you paid for your phone, but I paid retail price plus tax. If I had known I was actually paying for an education about what it exactly it means to buy a samsung phone I would have looked elsewhere.
that being said, theres one thing I can't stand and that is people such as yourself who waited until after people bought the phone and realized that and official update in a timely fashion not likely, accepted that risk, and then come here to rub it in the face of those who care about things like kernel sources, and custom roms to tell us about how we should all be as smart as you with your divine phone selecting savvy. I can't say that I speak for everyone, but I can certainly speak for myself when I tell you sincerely to gtfo.
yours truly, cozmonot
Ok to someone like yourself I understand that you did not know what you were getting yourself into and I'm not trying to say that someone such as yourself that bought the phone right when it came out doesn't have a right to be mad. I never said I had waited to buy this phone for any reason its just when I see ppl on here that say they just got the phone and now are mad they don't have 2.2 yet its disturbing. I understand we need kernals and source to make better roms and things, I myself am running Nebula and have been since the first week of owning this phone, so as with the rest of you I myself would like it so my rom can be further upgraded. The main thing I was trying to get at is that complaining about how we don't have it isn't getting us it I did not mean disrespect for someone like yourself and I don't think I have any better taste for phones than the rest of us we all chose this phone for whatever reasons but I don't think anyone chose it bc it was going to have 2.2
Sent from my Epic with Seven Sisters
I agree in that people complaining here doesn't really accomplish much. Apologies, I probably shouldn't reply to threads when I'm angry and tired.
I think we need to make our voice heard by sprint and samsung if we want things to actually happen, and complaining to people in the same position can't make things any better. just look at the vibrant owners who threatened a lawsuit and got the mainstream blogs to post about the vibrant not having froyo, didnt they get the update like a week later? I agree with what you said in your second post and I wish I had known about what I was getting myself into back in August when i signed on the dotted line.

I bought the phone because of the hardware and because it was stated that 2.2 would be coming soon. I don't understand how people like you can just accept that You have the phone with the best hardware specs on the market at the moment and not be pissed that it doesn't have 2.2. While I agree that coming on xda and starting multiple threads on if FroYo is out is not the most productive way of dealing with the problem, bending over and submitting that because you paid money for the device and knew that it had 2.1 on is just a cop out.
To answer your question on what does FroYo add, here is just a few.
- What about all of the people who spent $30 to $50 on official samsung docks and can't even use it to the fullest without FroYo. IT EVEN SAYS ON DAMN PACKAGING THAT FULL FUNCTIONALITY WILL BE UNLOCKED WITH THE 2.2 UPDATE.
- What about bluetooth voice dialing, JIT, flash, and the updated google apps that come with 2.2, not to mention the speed increase. The FroYo update for the Vibrant doesn't count in this case because everyone knows that update was rushed because of the lawsuit business, and that lead to a bugged release.
And if none of that convinces you, the fragmentation of the market is the best example I can give. Do you know how annoying it is to find an app that you know your phone has more than enough power to run, but it won't even show up in the market because it only works on FroYo and up? IT'S THE ****ING PITS DUDE. For example there is this game that some (ex-sony I think) devs called Lame Castle that I really want to play, but it won't work on galaxy s phones without FroYo. Look it up on the market with Epic, it won't even show up. Now go on appbrain and its there clear as day. There are numerous examples of this, but this is the one that affected me that most.
So when you say that we should have know better and should not be upset, all I can say is that I hope you continue to enjoy the anal that samsung and sprint have given you so far. There's a lot more to come.
It was my first Android. It was cool at first, but just wanted FroYo and refused to get the Evo because the screen sucks and no keyboard.

I would have to say my favorite part about what you said was when you said Froyo for vibrant was rushed and has bugs. Because that could be us, we could have a rushed crappy edition of froyo. I understand that it makes it better and we can't do somthings without but if your life won't go on because you can't play some game on your phone (unless somehow you've got a job doing mobile gaming) then it might be time to look at some new hobbies or just pay your way out of contract so you can go get a phone with froyo that will make you happy as a little kid in a candy shop. But it must not be that bad if your willing to wait it out and hope one day you will wake up and see an OTA.

you never [/rant]
Anyways android is a grey point right now as with your reference to XP you could pay to upgrade to vista/7 (driver / hardware supporting of course) where with android everything is kept under wraps so by the manufacturer until weeks or sometimes months after their "official" software is released and only then can some reverse engineer everything to get what they need to develop.
Hopefully the future of android can be like computer operating systems. Manufacturers only make drivers that way google can push out their own updates or at least give us the ability to do our own.

You are very right as far as being able to pay for updates I was just meaning more of on a free level for that analogy, but yes very good point. And I too hope that it will someday be that easy.

About the Vibrant, their is no excuse for that buggy release at such a late push date. The carriers have had FroYo since November and and have taken their own sweet time working on it. To add insult to injury, Every other carrier with a Galaxy S phone has pushed out FroYo since November. They even started getting 2.2.1 about two weeks ago. Even the number five carrier in the states, U.S. Cellular, has had FroYo out for its captivate out for about a month and a half now. And guess what? That update went off without a hitch. I also like how you were able to boil down my argument into the my statement about Lame Castle, which in my circles is very important because I'm going to school for that kind of thing, and Vibrant update which I would have even if I didn't have months of knowledge on the situation here and everywhere else that Galaxies are sold. You just get your phone and feel like preaching to me on how I should just take this ****. I bought this phone months ago knowing I would be with it for two years and expecting on Samsung to hold up to their statement of by the end of the year. Its a month into 2011 and still nothing. If you find your epic fine on 2.1, all power to you. But their are people with docks, people that want to make hands free calls while on the road, and people who just want full access to the market, who have all the right in the world to complain over this mess.
Note: Make multiple threads on XDA is NOT the way to go about it though people.

I never said there was an excuse for it but I do like your note, bc that was one thing I was trying to get at in my original statement is topic after topic about how we don't have 2.2. And I said earlier to a guy its not the people such as yourself that have had th phone and been expecting the update its ppl that haven't had their phone long and are starting thread after thread asking or complaining about 2.2.

Actually, I did. Also, because of the slide out keyboard. If I wanted a phone forever stuck with Eclair, I'd have kept my Moment.
EDIT: I am not stuck on Eclair, but there are people who don't know about rooting and custom ROMs.

I decided to get THIS phone for the desired features AND the promise of 4G and 2.2 before the ed of the year. While you are entitled to your opinions, I certainly don't appreciate labeling and especially not when you do it from the safety of your keyboard. It just isn't called for.

I didnt read the majority of the posts, I apologize....just want to put in my two cents and I guarantee it'll still be on topic.
People here have the right to rant. They have the right to be angry. They bought a true high end Android phone and are still on 2.1. That's not right... I have an Evo and an Epic...and the difference between 2.1 and 2.2 is really just the Flash (I'm not including what Samsung through in there based off of the leaked roms. Because some of what they through in there was just polishing up the UI and stuff). And Flash isn't really that big of a deal, its just one of those things that is nice to have. But thats beside the point. It doesnt even matter if the only thing different between 2.2 and 2.1 was a damn ringtone...a high end Android phone should be updated. If you don't update these phones, then why would someone shell out extra money to buy another high end phone that will share the same exact features as a low end phone? True the High end will be faster, but it really needs to have something to separate itself from the low end phone and that something should be the fact that it will always be supported...
And this is the problem with Android and this is what makes me sick about it. Android is great...but dammit...they need to relax on these phones and focus on the ones that are out now. They just keep on taking our money, and its going to get to the point where no phones will be updated, they will just keep releasing phones with the new update. And they know people will straight up go buy the new phone just for that update, just to realize that it aint even good. I started with the Evo before the Epic and if I wouldve went from the Epic to the Evo just for 2.2, I wouldve been pissed the hell off. 2.2 is not worth it at all...well, lemme put it like this: 2.2 by itself is not worth it. Although it aint worth it, this high end phone should still have it. If the Evo has it...the Epic should have it. The Evo will probably get Gingerbread and that'll be a damn shame...it won't benefit from it at all...
I mean, when you look at this 2.2 update from different angles, you can see why people rant and get mad. They have the right to...now if we could just put all of it into one thread that would be a lot better than multiple threads...but its w/e.
Also, does anyone else think that nothing else will top Android but Android will "destroy" itself? Android has already destroyed itself with me, if the iPhone hits Sprint, I'm jumping ship.
