I've noticed recently the backlight on my HD2 seems to have suffered some sort of malfunction or something. Might be a bit of a strong way of describing it perhaps.
Basically imagine if you have a blank white screen/image showing on the phone, there's a couple of bits on it that always stay in the same place where the brightness is not the same as the rest. I'm certain it's only been like this recently but no idea why.
You can only really notice it with very pale or bits of white on the screen but am wondering:
1 - if anyone else has this,
2 - how it's happened,
3 - anything I can do about it,
In particular if it's a fault with the phone (as I'm certain the phone has never been knocked and it definitely has never been dropped or pressed hard etc), is this something I could get done under warrantee.
If it is, can I get it fixed on warrantee even with no receipt since I bought it on Ebay? Every single HD2 is still in its warrantee period so I hope they could do.
Thanks!
I have the same, they advised me to contact support, but i kinda neglected it for the time being.
I have the same kind of spot in the middle of my screen, i only really see it when the screen is white, annoying tho :/
I dont like the idea of having to send the phone out and missing it for a few weeks :'(
I had the same problem on my device so I called HTC and they picked it up, repaired it and sent it back. Well they sorted out this particular problem (by replacing the LCD panel) but, alas, created few more. The buttons were not placed properly, the body was damaged and etc. So Angry and Disappointed Me called them up and they picked it up again. This time they replaced the whole unit (the actual body if I am not mistaken) and sent it back. Finally I was glad to have my phone back after two weeks.
Funny enough most of the HTC employees that I spoke to had very poor English. And I spoke with quiet a few of them. Luckily I am talented at mimicking broken English and didn't have much problem getting my message across. I'd imagine for most people it should be very difficult to explain their problem and arrange repairs.
Thanks for the replies.
Is it possible to do this without a sales receipt and still not have to pay? I don't think I should have to pay since it's not very old at all but I can't prove it's actually my phone I guess.
Did you just contact them via the XDA website or something?
I got the same issue. Most annoying when reading long emails or articles. I thought about sending it in for repair but I have voided my warranty already and don't want to be missing my hd2 for a couple weeks and get hit with a massive bill. I think it has something to do with the layers in the LCD not being completely flat. But I havent got that far in my explorations of this phone, maybe I will on my next trip.
You should contact HTC support by calling at the number for your country that you can find from the HTC website.
They can do everything with the phone's serial no. At least that's how it worked for my Kaiser I got on ebay too when I had a prob with it.

Hmmm, good point. I have a custom rom on it so mine probably would be void too right? If I change it back to the original rom it should be ok though presumably?
Thanks anyway - glad this is not me.
I am also seeing this on my HD2. It is very faint and only really noticeable on white screens. Once you know it is there though you can't help but keep looking for it
To be honest I can put up with it as most of the time you can't actually see it, for example I can't see it now due to the keyboard being up.
I'd be interested to know if anyone in the UK sends their phone off for repair as I might do the same. I can't be without my phone though, it would be like loosing my arm!

Ah yes, so you did. Sorry I was looking at the flag on your profile not your location
I have a small crack on the glass of my HD2 as well between the bottom of the phone and the power / end call key. It looks like a small hair stuck under the button Not sure if they would replace the glass for me as well if I sent it off?
I got my phone from O2 so I'm wondering if I'd have to go to O2 for repair or direct to HTC, maybe I could do both
Anyway, for now I think I'll refrain from sending it off unless it really starts annoying me. A bit of a pain though
I've emailed HTC as well to ask about this.....
Hi all,
My touch screen has stopped working... most frustrated!
I have Task29'ed it and have re-installed the ROM but still have not got any response.
Was working, then put it in my pocket 2 hours later the time had reset and I had no response from the screen....
Any ideas?
Common problem on HD2's. Send it in for repair.
In the past week I've seen about 12 people with messed up touch screens. That is very weird.
My touch Screen died too, yesterday. Suddenly I couln't unlock the phone, the screen just wouldn't reacht to my touches. So I restarted, then it worked fine for half an hour before freezing again. Now I cant get it to work anymore. I was running Windows Phone 7 when it happened, then flashed an Android ROM, the problem was still there.
So I need to know if it is possible to remove Nand Android and HSPL without the use of the touch screen at all? If I send it in now, with HSPL installed they sure as hell wont fix it.
Interesting that so many are dying all of a sudden, looks like the digitizer is coming to the end of its useful life. How infuriating
Dont even know a company that would repair this other then HTC, and sod paying their charges! Ebay and HD7 here I come!

You can reflash without touching the screen, turn it off, plug it into the PC and hold down the 'down' volume button which will put it into hard reset. Upload the original ROM.
I just flashed to the newest stock ROM with RUU. But when I go to bootloader it still says Cotulla HSPL What can I do to remove it and all traces of it?

Im curious, what OS were you running on the phone when this happened?
two of my friends have sent theirs back. they both got theirs about six months ago. perhaps there's some sort of lifespan on these touchscreens.I sold my hd2 to a friend and he's starting to complain about this issue as well

First of all, I am not blaming Cotulla or any developer. Also I don't blame nand or any type of software installation
What happened to me on Friday (and to my neighbor on Saturday), is it started when we flashed the Stock HTC ROM to go back from WP7.
Both our digitizers crapped out right there I say it's pure coincidence.. I'm just pissed off that after 7 months, I have to send my unit to the UK. (I bought it in Holland, but I live in Romania).
Oh well, going to call HTC tomorrow, and arrange an RMA

After i've been reading through the internet, i noticed indeed that after a good 7-8 months, a lot of people have this problem.
They repaired mine in 1 week, I got it back on Friday =) Happily... They changed the whole body, including camera, flash ( donno why ) and the screen..it looks like new! I thought it is new at first, but then I saw the serial number is the same...

Nothing! It was covered by the warranty... I just installed the stock ROM ( which uninstalls HSPL ) before sending it for repair...
Actually the android folder was still residing inside the SD card, but I think it didnt affect the warranty..

Done .....
I don't think its a touchscreen issue the way I c it te hardware buttons are the cause because it happened to be before when my power button started causing te screen to not respond but waking with every other button it would respond normally but later on all te button started giving in... finally it was completely dead I think that's why usually most phone have seperate power button and capacitive button cause they don't wear out usually that quick atleast idk that's just my theory

well i was in a law suite with HTC for the issues i was having with my HTC Desire issues so i received a new desire hd for all the issues i went through even though HTC took a year to settle lol
so do you guys like your Desire HD
Congrats on getting the HD. Your going to love it. Im delighted with my one.
I got mine on 2 days back. I am loving it with Gingerbread sense.
Sent from my Desire HD
congratz.. now go to DHD dev and flash the gingerbread rom on it..
+1, then you never look back on your desire anymore
lol that statement is so true i cant put this phone down, lol as well i have not touched my iphone in days my buddy has a iphone 4 as well and he was blown away by the htc Desire HD i know the GPU is not all that but what i use it for it is amazing he just fell in love now he wants one
I must be the only person who doesn't love this phone, its not that I dont like it, its just that there seems to be a lot of issues.
I got mine on Saturday, it was a Vodafone UK upgrade, and coming to this from the orginal Desire has been a BIG DISAPPOINTMENT
The one thing I noticed as soonas I took it out of the box was the seemingly sharp edges around the screen area, the phone itself is sluggish and the screen can be very non-responsive, I cant for the love of all thats almighty get the HTCSense to work - in fact cant even create an account, cant download Locations, the GPS wont work because it says it cant find the satellites even when I'm outside, and the list just goes on.
I loved my original Desire and chose it over the iPhone 4 and thought this would be the next step up buy boy was I wrong. Chances are Ive just got a bad one, but its hasnt half dented my confidence in what I originally thought was a great brand.
As I said, I had the phone as an Vodafone upgrade through Phones4U in the UK. Are they likely to give me a new phone or will they make me have this one repaired? To be honest, I dont want it repaired I just want a new one.
Suggestions please
It sounds like you got a bad one. You could try a factory reset and see if that speeds it back up to normal. If not I would suggest they change it for you. There are plenty of YouTube videos showing the normal (non-sluggish) speed. If your one doesn't match - ask them why it is so slow.
My 2 cents.
I would suggest the same as Grant Barker, sounds like you've got some kind of issuse!
Factory reset is always an good idea! ;-)

IANAL but distance selling reg's should cover this, you are entitled to reject the phone within seven days, personally I would speak with Phones4U as i have found them very helpfull in the past if no joy there try speaking to vodafone aswell.
But it does sound like you've recieved a lemon, even if I did find SENSE slowed the phone down over vanilla android.
1st thing I tried was a factory reset and to be honest, I think its made a blind bit of difference.
Thanks for the heads up people, I'll let you know how this progresses.
you will have to contact the company and explain to them u have a DOA

After canceling it I've order HD7 from dialaphone.com(phone4u)
Same sh.t realy same sh.t.
Baterry cover, plastic frame with scratches and in the middle of screen big looks like somone try to pull it off.You can see parts inside!!!
Was canceled !!!
No HTC in near future! Nono!
Is this fault of HTC TW? or Phone4u UK is selling some sort of 2nd quality ****?
Welcome from the owners of SHD.
Sense is really nice, I think.
With other Nosense Rom's i took less pleasure to use my phone.
In addition, drivers included in HTC sense, allow the phone to be much less energy.
Otherwise, you must hack the kernel.

Well it's been a helluva ride, my HD2, after nearly two years of faithful service, my touchscreen finally killed my phone. I can't even get past the lockscreen on my phone, so now it's time to move on. I'll see about getting a Nexus S or something but thanks to all the devs here and all of the community here for their wonderful advice. If it sounds like i'm giving up, unless someone here can provide a solution, i realize that cellphones have a two year shelf life anyway.

Me too.... I've tried to restore stock WM6.5 and touch-screen stills not working.... Any idea from anyone??? I still believe that it's not hardware issue. The phone doesn't fall down... I hadn't any problem, 'till yesterday.... Please.. someone.. ;(
It happened to me. I replaced the digitizer/LCD and have been good since.
P.s. I hadn't ever dropped my phone or even scratched the screen when mine stopped responding.
You must replace screen.. no other solution :\

Well mine have been faithful since now, i got it since December of 2009 and still going....
There are many things that made your touch stop working..for example:
humidity!!!! the eternal enemy of electronics...
Maybe while you were taking a bath..you got your phone playing music for you...THATS DEADLY!!
Humidity its the first thats got in my mind...if you got your HD2 pimped with android try installling wm6.5 again...if nothing happens..then its no software...!!!
The HD2 has the most "pain in ass" touchscreen ever made.....its a nitemare for technicians haha!! so i dont recommend you to try replacing it yourself
R.I.P. for you HD2 mate...and peace all over
I just bought a used HD2 that needs a new touch screen. It was weird because I bought the phone then 10 mins later the screen stopped working. I think it wasvjust epically bad timing, because the HD2 is in GREAT condition, but the phones are growing in age so the digitizer must have died.
I live in the Boston, Ma area and I'm going here to have my phone repaired...
http://www.megamobileboston.com/cell_phone_repairs.html
They sounded great on the phone and they actually list the HD2 specifically under screen repair on their website which is the first time I've ever seen that. So if you're driving distance from Boston, Ma, they will repair your HD2 screen for about $100.
yeah... i am on my second HD2 now, the first one died, the screen died twice, but it is covered under manufacturer warranty, and that is two years, so if you have had yours since december of 09, you are still in warranty i suppose.... you should give them a call and get it replaced... but if you are hspl'd then you should get rid of that before sending it back
wait, there may only be a one year warranty, because mine expired in june.... and the phone hasnt even been out for two years.... lols, silly me..... oh well, to the guy who posted above me, it is worth giving htc a call to see if your phone might be under warranty, because the screen ish is annoying, mine died a second time 3 months after being replaced...
I just got off the phone with HTC USA...they said a screen repair not under warranty is around $120....motherboard repair can be up to $290..cosmetic dings on the casing can be anywhere from $50-$150
Their prices considering the retail value of the phone...seem fair, and they are VERY thorough, they'll clean and replace EVERYTHING. But they don't pay for shipping if ur not under warranty so it's cost of repair plus about $20.
BTW - haven't been on the forums for about a year and it feels good to be back. Once I get the HD2 up and running i'll be contributing a lot to the Android forums and the HD2 forums I'm a designer and developer myself.

Exactly brother.... humidity is the worst enemy ever.
I had this problem a while ago while i was running wm6.5. I just did a factory reset and everything was fine. It happened again while running android cm7 and i did a task29 and it was fine again. Ive been happily running a custom rom ever since! hope this helps...
No... out of the blue.
So i was flashing ROM's happily, when all of a sudden the take call button (the green one) didn't work anymore. This is so sad!
Luckily, it still works, when i push it really hard. It's really not nice to have the idea that my HD2 is about to die...
Has this happened to anyone else?
no, my old hd2 has gone for repair twice, both for the hardbuttons on the front. the will slip out of its slot. for me it as te backbutton. they will replace the hardware buttons. or order some and do it yourself. some interesting videos on youtube to fully disassemble your HD2

I might indeed look at repairing it,though i'm also interested in a new phone. I can get the HTC One X 32GB for 250 Euros (328 Dollar ) so i might get one soon. But i'd still like to go on using the HD2 as long as possible. In spite of that, there's no denying that it's gettin gold. It's a hard choice.
