I was using ji6 and was having some problems with maps showing my location wrong. I read where some people said that upgrading to ji6 from the stock firmware helped with this issue. So, I searched for the stock firmware to flash.
I was stupid and ended up flashing a je8 version instead of original firmware. To make matters worse it had 3 separate tar files and I didn't pay attention and only flashed the pda file.
This subsequently locked my phone up and I couldn't access download mode by pressing both volume buttons and plugging in the usb cord. I finally was able to get in download mode by holding the volume down button and pressing the power button. I was able to flash ji2 with oden.
My issue now is I can still no longer access download mode by holding down both volume buttons. Also, when I do access download mode now, there is a message in red at the top that reads "KeyPressed, 164"
Anybody have any ideas how to get this message to go away, and to get the method of pressing both volume buttons and plugging in the usb cord to work again? I haven’t tried flashing back to the stock firmware but I wasn’t having this problem when using ji2 originally. My phone has not been rooted either.
Thanks

Well I've had my Vibrant for about a month now but have not been in a rush to root because there aren't really any ROMS available yet. I've donated so I'm excited to see what comes about. Any way I decided to go ahead and root today because frankly the bloatware was getting on my nerves. So I rooted the phone basically just flashing the upsate.zip and then flashing recovery via rom manager. Now I'm a bit frustrated because immediately after rooting:
1. My Vibrant is laggy as all hell!
2. Google apps crashes repeatedly
3. My damn market no longer works! Can't download apps via market anymore
4. My Sync is now broken, it says synced but definitely does not sync anything any time anymore.
What gives? Others have obviously had no problems and I'm certain I didn't do anything wrong, I've been rooting and flashing since the days of G1 and have had a Mytouch and most recently a Nexus One. I'm not fantastically versed but I'm no n00b all the same.
Also what's up with the radio? My phone rings and the ringer is low then a few seconds later gets loud also the delay between the time I dial a number and the number rings is pretty big, I've taken two phones and called one to check.
Any way I'm frustrated and unroot is not working, I attempted to unroot but yet remain rooted with all the same headaches.
Some help would be appreciated.
Go ahead and use odin to get back to stock. Yes you will lose your data.

You should be back to stock at this point. Then use this file to get root.

There really isnt much else to do. You dont even need the recovery, yet, but use clockwork through market to get it. Choosing Vibrant as the recovery option. Download the busybox app from market to get the newest one.
unfortunately my phone does not boot into download mode. I've tried holding volume down and power, no dice it just boots up normally. ive also tried holding volume up and power to the same result....And I don't know of any other way to use Odin without download mode. After rooting my phone nothing works properly.

You have to hold volume up and down while holding power. Once the screen goes black release power and continue holding volume up and volume down.
Your other option is with adb to do "adb reboot download" and it will reboot into download mode.
Once you get the hang of holding the volume up and down it's a piece of cake.
try installing one of eugene's ROMs through Clockwork, and see if that fix's anything.
Make sure you have the samsung drivers installed on your computer.
Odin can be tricky, here's my sure fire way that i get into Odin every single time.
DO NOT HAVE YOUR USB PLUGGED IN YET
1) Start odin load your .pit file and rom into PDA
2) Go into stock recovery
3) Now plug in the USB cable, Odin should recognize a phone is connected
4) In recovery select Reboot System
5) Immediately press the Volume Up/Down Button all the way in, (2 clicks)
6) should load the yellow triangle and say download mode plus Odin should recognize it immediately
Okie doke, thanks guys, I went ahead and used Odin to return to get back to stock so I'm going to just root again, I have no idea why things got so screwed up when I rooted and flashed before. Getting into download mode was annoying but this is what worked for me:
1. Turn off phone
2. Plug USB in
3. Wait for green charging screen
3. Hold Volume Up, Volume down, and Power.
5. Let go of power as soon as the screen goes black.
Open Odin and load files then hit start....and back to stock I went.
Thanks again!
So I tried Odin and was going back to stock. Odin was going for over an hour and no progress was being shown. So what I read is to restart the process. So I took out the battery and went to get into Download Mode again. So my guess is the something was actually still writing even after an hour...or Odin wrote something bad at the beginning and then died.
Well now my phone only goes to the Screen showing a Phone --- ! ---- Computer. I have tried many tricks listed on this site. Take out the battery, hookup the USB, hold down up and down volume, and then put the battery back in...nothing. Tried many things like this.
ADB doesn't see the device.
Any thoughts?

If you can get into samsung recovery try wiping user data.

Still have the Phone --!-- PC image only. Comes right up immediately.
Try
1) pull the battery
2) plug in micro usb
3) hold down both vol buttons
4) pop in battery
I am having the exact same problem. When I tried to odin back to stock, it got stuck on cache.rfs. So i took out the battery, and get back into download mode, , but odin didn't see the phone after I plug the USB back in. So i restart odin, and it assign a com port. When I click start after specifying the pit and tar file. It would just get stuck at cache.rfs again.
I am not able to get into recovery, and I just see the <computer ! phone>. or I can get into download mode with the key combinations. but odin wouldn't flash, and i can't boot regularly. Please help.
This is happened to me as well. I was trying for hours to get ODIN to flash the tar file but it would either freeze or fail. Eventually I tried another computer and started from scratch by downloading the USB Drivers, ODIN, the PIT and TAR file again. In my case it turned out to be my computer, using another computer successfully flashed teh stock rom and later the manual ota update.
Is Your Vibrant Hardware Locked?
Sounds Like it, If It Is, Your Screwed..Sorry
nvm, i finally got it to flashed back to stock. it wouldn't work until I finally found the odin v1.52. it flashed as soon as I use that version of odin. btw..I don't think mine is hardware locked, since i am normally able to get into recovery or download mode by using the key combination. Thanks
I must be doing something wrong here.
I have Odin 3 1.70.
I have the .tar file JJL4 thread in the development forum.
Samsung drivers are installed.
I take out the battery, then put it back in, then hold vol+/vol- and hit power and I'm in system recovery screen.
The last entry on the phone says installing muti-CSC.
I then connect the phone to the PC and it recognizes something on Com3. I then load the tar file in the pda section of ODIN. I'm not loading the PIT file.
When I click start, odin says file analysis, then setupconnection, then nothing else happens after that.
I don't need the .pit file, right? If I use the .pit file, does that erase the programs and data that I had stored on the phone?
Help?
I had a similar problem using the same version of Odin. Then I flashed it again using Odin 1.30 and it worked fine.

You need to get your phone in Download Mode, not Recovery. If you see a yellow Android with a shovel, you're in Download Mode. Check out the stickies and the Vibrant Bible.
Well, all of the instructions say to hold vol+/vol- and then power. When I do that it takes me into the recovery screen.
How do I get it into the download screen then?
I have never seen this posted here or anywhere but this is how I get into download EVERY time. I also don't go into every post though lol.
With the phone off hold the volume buttons down THEN plug in the usb to the phone it will go straight to download mode. USB needs to already be plugged into PC too if that wasn't obvious.
I think the way it's actually posted though is Volume +, Home button, and Power not both volumes. I have never gotten it to work that way and I stumbled onto the above way by accident.

Wow, you think that would be in the guides somewhere.
Phone off, holding both vol+/vol- and then plugging usb cable into the phone put my in downloading mode.
Was I doing something completely wrong before? Why wasn't it going into download mode?
Thank you much!
Flashing now, fingers crossed.
Turn off your phone, plug your phone in and when you see the green charging. Hold the. Volume up and
Down keys and the power key until you see the download mode.
Ok, so ODIN succeeded. It rebooted and got hung at the S.
I went into recovery mode, cleared the cache and rebooted again and I'm still stuck at the S?
What now?!
EDIT: Went into recovery and cleared cache again and I'm back up now.
great news! now you know how to odin. but majority of the time you will have to use a back up like titanium backup or nandroid from cwm to restore your apps and stuff. when using t-backup make sure not to select missing apps plus system data cause that can cause some force closes!
Z4 mod isn't working for me on this. Should it be?
What else will root this version?

Okay, so I think I brainfarted and softbricked my Vibrant. I tried to get it into download mode, but pressing vol up+down only gets me a gray battery icon, not the usual download screen. When I power it up regularly, it goes into bootloop. It's never had a problem going into download mode before, so I don't know if there's a malfunction with the vol buttons or what. I certainly seem to suck.
(Ugh, just noticed the no questions in the general forum rule. Mods, please delete)
Pull battery
Plug phone into computer via usb
Hold vol up, vol down, and power
Replace battery while still holding those buttons
U can go to 4shared and grab a app called hot boot, it will put u in recovery

try to do the same steps but hold the vol up button only (not the down)!
this the only way that i can get into download mode!
These guys listed about every way to get in to download mode. If none of them work, you are doing something wrong...
Are you running gingerbread or froyo?
Button sequences are different. Gingerbread uses one volume button(depending on the kernel either up or down) and the power button, while froyo uses the both volume buttons only.
Sent from my SGH-T959 using xda premium
(Depending on the level of softbricking you will either see the Android with a shovel or a phone and computer with exclamation mark, both are download modes)
Froyo bootloader:
Pull Battery,
Put Battery back in phone,
Hold only volume up and down at same time.
Insert USB.
GB Bootloader:
Pull Battery,
Put Battery back in,
Press and hold Volume Up+Power button.
These should work without flaw. If neither work for you, you may need to invest a couple bucks in getting a USB Jig.
Same issue witht similar results
I am having the same issue, Phone was rooted, on the Keis Gingerbread Update. When I tried to restore to Froyo, using T959UVJFD it got stuck in a boot loop, Tried to go to CWM cyogenmod using both Oden and Recovery and Odin Failed, Recovery gave me the evil Signature Failed.
So I tried a different Froyo EUGENE373 which bricked the phone. I was able to unbrick with onclickUnbrick (Awesome app, thank You). But when I tried to apply The Factory Froyo again it failed in Odin.
Now, the PC will not recognize the phone, USB divice failed message. I removed and reinstalled the drivers, Tried the Samsung Drivers, the Keis drivers and Hiendall drivers as well as the USB drivers with the ADK / SDK toolkit. I tried to connect the phone to another PC with the same result. I know that I am doing the process to get into Download mode properly, but it only displays the greyed out battery, with the USB unplugged the phoned boots to the Galasy S GT-I9000 Samsung screen and I am not able to get out of it with any button combo.
This is my wifes phone and I am in the doghouse for this one. I have rooted and flashed my Verizon Fascinate with no issues. Thank You for your help. if I can get into download mode I was going to follow the process in the NOOB root, flash sticky thread, unless someone has a better Idea.
Hi everyone,
I'm trying to fix a broken S8 Exynos version of my friend.
The problem is he probably flashed some invalid files and everything messed up where I can only get kernel panic upload mode.
Here's what I've tried:
- Combination of POWER + VOL DOWN + BIXBY to get into download mode and flash the stock ROM. Doesn't work and we are guessing the Bixby button hardware is defect.
- When booting I get the Samsung logo with pink text in the top left. Then the screen goes to kernel panic mode. Restarting does the same and there seems to be no way to get into download mode.
- In Odin, the device COM port is recognized but flashing doesn't work. It is stuck at "setup connection" and does not advance at all.
I've installed the USB drivers, rebooted removed the battery and tried again, tried ADB but debugging is not enabled and nothing works. Is this phone useless without a Bixby button or is there a way to get into download mode???
Any advice would be welcome,
Thanks
Firstly make sure you are using the modded Odin for Oreo. Not using it causes that random stuff to happen. What you can try is plug the phone in via USB, Open up Odin and load your files, do the Download mode button combo and hopefully the COM Port calls and Odin grabs it and signals it. Good luck.
