So I charged my phone last night and decided to check it this morning. I pulled it out of the charger for a bit and noticed my TWS was 51%! Has this still not been fixed? I guess we still need to do the airplane mode hack? What are you guys seeing for TWS with DI18? Thanks.
same. Turned off, did prl, did airplane a couple of times and finally now have 0.
To be honest, went to tech center yesterday to discuss, found knowledgable rep who downloaded Free Advanced Task Killer, turned on and off a lot of things in exclusions. It was running fine before that. Something in this setup kicked it way back up.
So deleted it, went back to my way. Now its good after stopping Media Hub and Drm.
So even after two updates this phone that people give me flack about how I was saying "it isn't ready for prime time use"
After a reboot (or it dies because you forget or don't know) it requires you to EVERYTIME.
A) Toggle airplane mode
B) Go into task settings and kill a DRM program
Yea, this phone is great for the public at large.
J3ff, honestly, you can stop trolling every thread now ... you hate the Epic, we get it. It was an honest question and was looking for a simple answer like nmoreman's. If you have nothing to add, please don't post.
I wonder if Juicedefender is causing any problems. It simply disables data when the screen is off, but I've heard some people having issues with it. Thoughts?

It's not that. It's that you are not adding to the conversation with helpful info. Just about everyone of your post say "the EPIC sucks" We get it. We got it 20 post ago. No matter the topic. You pretty much told a person that owned a EVO and switched to the EPIC that it was impossible that the EPIC had better battery life then the EVO. Why are you here? I had nothing but problems when I had juice defender installed. 4g wouldn't work... sometimes data wouldn't enable and my battery life was not any better. I am much better off now just disabling DRM service and changing the mobile network from WCDMA to CDMA auto (prl) when I reboot.

Juicedefender works great for me. It allows me to get email and text msgs and calls and it doubles my battery life. After about 9.5 hours, I'm only down to about 67% and that's with mild use and checking email all day long.

forgive me for sounding like a complete noob (which I guess I am with android), but what exactly is DRM & TWS?
also rsbenedict, what are your juice defender settings? I'm still trying to tweak mine.
Sent from my Epic 4g using Tapatalk Pro.
DRM is Digital Rights Management and it's a background process that is running due to Media Hub. TWS is Time without Signal which is a bug that occurs when you first turn on your phone. If you don't turn on Airplane mode first and then switch it off, your radio tends to search for a signal 50% of the time which sucks battery.
My settings are the default except that the hours that it turns off 3g/wifi are set to 9p to 4a because those are my sleep hours. Everything else is at default.
What do you guys do to your phones? I've had no problems with my epic and for the life of me I can't figure out why you guys have so many problems with your phones! Mine is not rooted I do not live in a 4g area but I think this is the best phone in the market right now. If you really think this phone is a pos then you should get a hero. So my question is pretty simple. What are the benefits of rooting? Do they outweigh voiding your warranty?

you can install the RUU and revert back to the original. Apparently no one should be able to tell if it was rooted before.

Root voids warrenty period. There is your answer. Can still get away with it. Also future reference. There is a search option. I answered this same topic 2 days ago. There isn't a reason not to. And winmax is fine. Some peoples Mac changes and have to fix it. Some roms don't have 4g. Its worth it to just tether for free.

I'm new to the Evo, and android in general, so a couple of quick questions -
When you guys say the fps limit is unlocked, is that just for the screen? Or is that also when recording 720p video (the framerate seems quite low in that)?
Can you root an Evo from Linux? I don't have a windows or mac PC, and the tutorials I've seen (I haven't done an extensive search yet) all seem to use windows.
What is the 90-100% power cycle? I don't believe I've seen reference to that before.
Sorry, not trying to hijack the thread, it just seemed an appropriate place for the questions.
I remember when this "what is root/why should I root" question plagued the G1 forum years ago.
The 90-100 power cycle is when when the phone % drops within minutes of unplugging the charger. Correct? I think thats what thats all about, apparently its driving some of us crazy.
Im pretty sure you can root using Linux, you probably have to search for instructions. You couldn't just use a friends pc? The one click is just a simple exe file that works in minutes. Oh you do have to install the Android driver the ln the exe.
Im not sure about the fps cap, I do know HTC did put one on and some roms removed it. I bet it had to do with battery life or something.

Thanks for the response - I read somewhere on this forum that if you charge the Evo via USB, that it got a full charge, and wouldn't drop off in the first couple of minutes, as opposed to using the stock wall charger. Has that not proven to be the case for you?
I reckon I could use a friends PC...but I don't want to use a one click method - I want to be as hands on as possible, to fully understand what's going on.

AT&T hasn't finished the enhanced backhaul to most of the network and it won't be ready to go till the end of March at the earliest. Seems like something Engadget should have mentioned.
It's a pretty solid review, I think, but now I'm wondering about bloatware. CNET's review said this:
Of course, you've also got your obligatory AT&T services--AT&T Navigator, AT&T FamilyMap, and AT&T U-Verse Live TV--on there, but for once, you can actually uninstall any of these apps if you wish.

but Engadget disagrees:
We're a little disappointed by the fact that Motorola and AT&T are loading up the Atrix with a considerable amount of bloatware, and there's nothing you can really do about it. Vlingo, a handful of AT&T apps, Blockbuster, and a smattering of other programs all ship on the handset with no option to delete them.

Which is it? Rooting will take care of bloat, but it would be nice if we could get rid of it before rooting is available.

again, AT&T hasn't finished the backhaul necessary. Also, I always get lower speed tests with the Speedtest.net app than I do with XtremeLabs app. When I get my phone, I'll test the speeds, should be about 2200-3500 in Stl. if it's like the N1. That's WITHOUT the '4G'
They tested it against the iphone and the iphone beat it hands down.
"
The odd thing is that if you compare the device against the iPhone 4 on AT&T's network -- tested in exactly the same locations -- you see much different results. On the iPhone, data speeds were consistently in the 2 or 3 Mbps range for downloads, and hovering around 1 Mbps for uploads."
That is a bowl of suck right there.

On the droid x I have I could only uninstall updates, not delete it (without root). Motorola has a deal with Blockbuster, so they put it on all their phones.
I wouldn't be surprised at all if z4root worked right out of the box. It's already designed to work on Motorola phones running 2.2.1, so it probably will work for this too. Once that's done, TiBu will remove everything extra anyway.
On the battery side, the Atrix 4G packs an impressive 1930mAh battery inside, and even though Android is data intensive, we found ourselves squeezing more than 24 hours out of the device on a single charge with fairly heavy use. You can probably get more time out of the device if you avoid calls when possible and keep your brightness settings in check, but we were pleasantly surprised by the performance we saw.

lol, yeah, don't hold back or anything. This phone is sounding like a winner to me assuming it can be properly rooted and custom roms installed. I never had an interest in the docks anyways so the overall beatings they are taking in the reviews isn't a concern to me. Like engadget I love the concept but the laptop dock cannot replace a laptop as is making it a third wheel for me.
Well, all I wanted to see in that review was info on the bootloader, and... it's locked... Not really a surprise, but hey, I was holding onto hope. The fact that this phone won't be getting much dev support, and because it's all plastic, means I'll be crossing it off my list... My perfect Android device, has yet to surface.

I am willing to bet that custom roms will start rolling out after about a month. I don't understand what the big deal is with bootloader, with it unlocked, we might see roms a few weeks sooner, but either way it will get done. Is there someone who can confirm if this is an issue with Sprint's service, or the firmware? I am having a hard time believing it would be Sprint's service, as I haven't read about this issue much - this does not prove anything, but still.
I use my phone for business, too, and definitely cannot afford to lose calls, and on top of that, not even have the missed calls appear in the call log.
Actually I was just talking to my wife and to be honest I don't ever rememrher evo doing that. Also I had an evo as well and I don't remember this issue as well. Maybe it is the epic then. Anyone else??

I've had that on every phone I've had with sprint in the last 10 years, sprint tech called it tower lock said if you remain for an extended period of time within one towers rande then move to another sometimes the calls won't get routed right, oddly enough when I've had it happen its not all calls, don't know if this is true or just bs from sprint, first time they had me take the battery out and wait 10 mins and it was fixed, second time they had to do something on their end and I had to update my prl
Haven't had it happen for about a year but I've since then moved and regularly travel between multiple towers
This has happened to me since I got this phone. Sometimes I can be calling my chick and she right in front of me and she won't receive 2 to 4 calls till the phone actually rings. Same on the receiving end she can be calling me and no calls come thru. She'll be all pissed telling me off why I don't answer my phone and ill check to see if its on silent and no, and no calls missed. I think it samsung cause my chick has an htc evo and this **** doesn't happen to her. This will probably be my last samsung purchase.

Well at least I know I'm not the only one.... I've had issues since going to EB13, never noticed it on other base-builds tho.
Yea its started on EB13 for me too
I've had this issue for years. I always presumed is was a CDMA thing. I have email, facebook, twitter, baseball news and others using 3g to check for new items. Since all these are on different timers, they may take up a not insignificant amount of bandwidth. As CDMA sends incomming calls to voicemail if you are using 3g, I thought this was what was causing the issue. But I never turned off all updates to see if the problem went away. Might be worth trying.

By your logic, if I go back to JuiceDefender, the problem may be resolved to a point.
I've had it happen from candybar and flip regular phones and dumb phones and smartphones. This is nothing new. I've experienced it for years. My suggestion is to tell people to try calling a second time. It usually gets through then. It's not the phone, its the service or technology. The phone might be in a sleeping cycle.

QFE - Both my TP and TP2 were awful about this. Still have it happen pretty frequently with the Epic. I'm sure it's issues in the network.
I've recently upgraded to the newest ROOTED OTA GB for my DROID X and noticed that my Wireless Tether no longer works.
Instead it directs me to the Verizon Customer Service site where it shows pricing for their tether plans.
Is anyone else having this issue??
That is because you are not paying for the service. It is a paid service and they are able to track if you are trying to do it. Solution: don't tether, or pay for it
incredibly unhelpful.......they're sucking enough money out of us already for the data plans on both the phones and tablets, i see no reason for them to get more money out of me for a small amount of tethering. Especially if I've never come close to using even 3/4 of the data my plans allow.
any other answers out there, minus the self-righteous undertones?

I think you found your answer buddy. You're running a non final build that isn't out yet and we all knew this was going to happen. It's like saying hey I stole a car before it was released and I want to use a pay feature for free.. Can't get much support buddy.
Aside from the "buddy" stuff, that was the kind of answer I'm looking for. Makes perfect sense and I had a suspicion it was something like that.
Why does everyone talk down to everyone in here? Honest questions deserve honest answers, no preaching necessary.
cstrifee999, i appreciate your input. thanks!
I find it so funny that a lot of the same people that are rooting, loading roms, and tethering are now all snotty about it with the little "well you're stealing buddy, its unapproved, youre not holding it right, blah blah blah I'm a dirty whore" bs. That said I have still been tethering using the old methods and haven't been redirected. Search around and see if it still works for you.G Good luck.

To be completely honest, I do not support this attitude eeither even though I am one who was just guilty of it. This is just what everything is turning into. When people ask questions that have been answered days ago (no offence in any way to OP, just trying to make a point) by the person giving us information, we tend to be annoyed be people who don't know the answer to these things because we think it is obvious and we've already answered questions on it several times. And another reason that we have so much of this is just that SO MANY threads have been made about whether or not someone could tether or why it's not working. Personally, I visit these forums several times a day because I have no life and I guess I just got sick of seeing thread after thread after thread on this subject. I apologize for my attitude
You might try the workaround that was used for the official wifi tether where you disable and re-enable 3G during a tether.
Also you can try going to the wireless tether website and download the experimental 3.0 pre10 version. That was how I got mine to work. It'll have a yellow icon.

Get the TBH 3G application patch.
It changes some redirection parameters in the NVRAM.
It works. Using it now.

I'm just sarcastic so my tone sometimes seems inappropriate. Not to defend the people on here the jump all over others, but some of us have been asked the same question hundreds of times multiple times a day. It's not your fault or any poster of a thread that asks a question. I myself have realized I am less patient. I guess the more you know about a subject you just assume everyone has a base knowledge and that if they don't some people treat others as "lower beings" or something. So basically going to XDA is like jumping into a shark tank... Sometimes you come out missing an arm.. lol

Very well put and I agree with your feelings completely. It gets very tiring to see so many threads on the same topic
I post very infrequently, but read at least once a day. And yes you do find a threads about the same questions in here. But for me it helps, it allows me to find what I am looking for easier. The more posts the more hits you get back.
Just another point of view.

Is this confirmed to work on the 588 release of gingerbread? I had it working on my 2.2.1, but I haven't tried it on the new release.

It never worked for me on 573 or 588. However, there are others that claim success with it. It seems as though it is hit or miss.
As a matter of fact, the first time I flashed 573, wireless tether worked. When I flashed the patch, it stopped working.

It works intermittently
I'm running the TBH NVRAM hack and it works for me. Make sure you have the 3.0-pre12 wifi tether app. I have noticed that occasionally i lose tether so toggling airplane mode seems to fix it. Good luck.
The stance that AT&T and Verizon(aka Baby Bell's) are taking with tethering is the same crud cable companies tried to pull by saying you cant have a router with multiple computers attached w/o paying them for it. It's more of the same old telcos trying to return to their glory years driven by monopoly business plans. We don't have to pay them to tether. It's a hardware feature and they don't own the hardware. They charge for data plans. We pay for the the data plans. We can use the data plan however the heck we want. They will lose this battle just like they did with wireline service.
But this whole downgrade to being considered a "Low Activity Device" is kinda messing with me a little...
I kinda really don't like it, lol...
If there is anyone else with me, let's all email the Super Mods, and see if we can bring it back
Please,
Taylore
The sad thing is that there has been more activity in here the past month than there was before, and it then gets the downgrade
As much as I hate to agree with this, we are a low activity device. Other than the general chatter about upgrading to froyo, we have a couple of ROMs and kernels that haven't been updated in quite some time, a gingerbread theme and some Ticker tweaks. Compared to other devices that is low activity.
We would need to kick up the development to really justify getting it moved.

Yeah, i can see what you are talking about...
As soon as we get froyo, there is definitely going to be a lot more development, and then I guess we can try and negotiate with the super mods then.
What does it mean to be downgraded? Can we still find all the dev stuff on our favorite sure?

It just means that we have been moved... Which in theory would be no big deal if there wasn't a handful of people who have been trying to keep this board alive and just got there efforts thwarted.... -__-

That's IF we get Froyo. It's been a couple months now, and we still haven't heard legitimate evidence that they are releasing froyo for us.
I have no idea why Verizon hasn't pushed that update out. It's incredible that they could just let the Continuum people hang like that. I'm going to talk to my media relations contact (I'm a product journalist by trade) and see what they say off the record. I'm sure it will go something like this "No comment at this time".

Kind words but I'm still not getting my hopes up. I was just starting to get comfortable with the idea I was gonna be stuck with Eclair..
I'll stay silently hopeful.

please be serious. if there is anything i can do to help, just ask. i really do like this phone, but the lack of 2.2 is a huge deal breaker. im going to try to get a different one unless i can be assured of froyo. if you provide it, i will be a very faithful follower
I activated this phone on a verizon pp before july 7 and so far I've kept my unlmtd data but I don't get upgrades....so I might have phone for awhile which means I don't care where the froyo comes from lol

"Legacy & Low Activity Devices", Wow.
That's low. But I guess it's the sign of the times.
I purchased my Continuum in January and I'm so fed up with samsung. RSS feeds don't work at all. Very dissappointed. I've decided not to purchase a single samsung phone/tablet product in the future. Lots of other makers that I see updates happening. 2 of my kids have Fascinates and they love them but updates are really slow coming out.
If it wasn't for you guys working on it and making it better, I would have canned the phone. Thanks for all your efforts and I hope we'll get 2.2 soon.
Start posting again! Now that we have Froyo, it's time to kick things up again.

I've noticed this unlimited data plan loophole mentioned a few times. Does this mean that those of us who are grandfathered in with the old data plans have a way of getting out of our contracts due to this change? I activated my Continuum in March.
But now that we are seeing some Froyo action, I'm not as desperate to go in a different direction. The thought of speeding her up and de-bloating is pretty exciting. Also I love the ticker even though it's only like 10% useable for what I do. The ability to answer or ignore calls and see the time no matter what I'm doing is great. Yes I know any non-continuum phone could do the same with a pop-up window or whatever but that permanent little section of soft-controls is just so cool! Thought the real reason I like it is the unlimited possibilities for customization...which so far has been non-existent. Every day I look at that ticker and muse over it's possibilities...thinking how nice it would be if the little notifiers mapped to apps I actually use or how awesome it would be to pop some 1x1 widgets down there.... Is it irrational in Aug 2011 to still hope for things everyone dreamed of when this thing was released last November?
I held on to Palm for way too long too....Is being loyal to a gadget for what it should be a fools errand that will just leave me sad and bitter in the end?

there is no loophole...verizon grandfathered in all smartphone users who had unlimited data (3g or 4g) for the near future (they can always change **** down the road if they want)
but for the time being u can upgrade on contract or activate new devices from 3g to 4g or 4g to 3g and keep ur same plan no restrictions (although 4g to 3g would burn ur 4g sim after 24 hours and ud need to get a new one)
Shouldnt all this activity and the Froyo Update bump us back up out of the low activity section? Just saying....
