How do refurbished phones look when they come? - Droid Incredible General

Just curious, got a 'new' phone on eBay because mine was stolen on the 26th. The phone I got does work fine and appears to be new, no dings, nothings. When I took it out of the package the plastic that was on the screen was not the one that came with the phone that shows the location of buttons and says 'remove before use' and it was not in the security sealed plastic.
Just curious, how do refurb phones show up to anyone who's got one?

I got a refurb from verizon just a few days ago. It came without a back plate, battery, or sd card. It had a protective sticker right on the front that said "factory recertified". It also had an amoled screen, which my previous did not

Dust under the screen...

Has anyone successfully cleaned the dust in their htc evos?
I have some dust in the top left corner near the htc logo and it is definitely under the screen and not under my screen protector.
Is there a way for us to open the evo and get to the area of the screen in question and use a can of compressed air to get the dust off?
If there is a way where are the directions? I haven't seen a how-to on opening the evo to get to the screen area.
Thanks in advance.
My phone is great working condition (rooted with custom kernel, theme, etc) and I would rather avoid having to bring my phone in if I don't have to.
I have the exact same problem. dont know whats causing it. but upper left. its been growing over the last month. making its way out into the center slowly but surely. very distracting. id love to be able to get rid of it.
dust, top left here too. not much, but i can see it only under sunlight.

Same, it's only noticeable at the right angle and light. For now I will wait it out. Hopefully it doesn't get too bad in a short period.
Same here. Have not noticed it on my wife's yet.

Its because of the gigantic unprotected hole for the audio. Happens to all Evos.
Yes I have it also. I contacted HTC directly and you have to send it to them and they will keep it for 2-3 weeks. They also said in the email that there technician will determine if its a warranty fix or not. So good luck. Anyone else get theres fixed?

Nope its not from that I had a dust shoot plug since I got my EVO and it still had dust under the screen. Took the phone to the repair center and they replaced the screen. The screen is a complete unit which includes the black plastic and the buttons. Its all one piece. They showed it too me after they took it apart and we had no idea how the dust got in there.

So Sprint was able to fix it at there repair center? Is it a quick fix or do you have to leave it? Did you have to buy the phone from Sprint also?

It takes about 20 minutes I did not leave the phone it was still rooted. I bought it at radio shack. Problem was the ear piece started crackling like it was blown. the guy worked on it some more now the ear piece doesn't work at all and a replacement EVO is on the way. Another post exists about this. They told me they have 3 revisions of the screens mine was rev. 2 they replaced with a rev. 3.
I had the same problem. I unrooted (big deal) took it to a repair center and they were going to clean it out for me. Turns out the internals of the power button were broke and I walked away with a brand new phone. Went home, used unrevoked and rerooted (another big deal) and haven't had any problems after having the phone for a month. Just take it in. Worst case they clean it. (Rooting and unrooting is too easy. Don't be lazy. Its a new phone.)

They can't clean it the screen is a sealed unit it has to be replaced. They didn't care that the phone was rooted. I called and asked what their policy was on rooted phones they didn't care as long as you aren't having software issues.
Not what the Guy at sprint said. He said they had cleaned a couple other ones.

I don't know how I saw it.
The piece all the way to the left is the screen the dust gets inside of it. It does not come apart. Maybe this second photo but I don't believe the dust was under that glass. I think it was in the display itself. Either way they replaced all of it.
I can't really ague that the dust wasn't under the glass maybe it was. I also can't argue that they can't take the glass off maybe they can. Either way I didn't care as long as it was cleaned.
In the pictures you posted it looks to me like it lacks a complete seal and more of an adhesive to keep the two layers together. But like you, it really didnt matter to me as long as it was getting resolved, and it was even better news I left the store with a brand new one.

I have the exact same problem, dust in the upper left hand corner.
I just realized I have dust on the upper left hand corner also. I am kind of pissed it's only a little over a month old.
Same thing, yet my evo is only two weeks old.

I just had my screen replaced at Sprint because of dust in the upper left corner. The rep told me it was a known problem. Had my phone back in a little over an hour and a half. Gave it to them rooted and running Fresh...not a word was mentioned about it. This was on my launch day Evo with the Nova screen. I think the replacement is an Epson, but I don't remember how to check.

My Dead Streak Story

Well my streak died Wednesday night. It froze and upon rebooting, it went into a boot loop.
Tried reflashing a few roms (including originals) but was getting can't Mount SDCARD. I then went into engineering mode and found out that I had a dead internal SD-card.
Dell Mobility was closed for the night so I called them Thrusday AM and was told they would send me a replacement.
Received the replacement this morning and it is very poorly refurbished. The battery cover is pretty scratched and at the top (black bezel with the camera and speaker) you can see where the old bezel was ripped off... Looks like they used a screwdriver... very messy. There are also nicks in the back part of the body on both sides of the battery cover. Additionally, the camera bezel is not flush on the top left corner and appears to be coming up. It doesn't seem to be glued down correctly.
My dead streak is in better condition that this replacement. I could live with the two small nicks if they hadn't torn it up so much to get the front camera/speaker bezel and it was glued down properly. Well I would need a new battery cover too but I would have kept my old cover since it was fine.
I've emailed Dell with the issues but haven't heard anything back yet. Any one else get a piss-poor refurb?

Wow, I sure hope that was just an "April Fool's" posting. No way would i settle for a 'refurb' in that condition. I've had refurbs in the past for other phones Ive had replaced and they were as clean as new.
...you sure they didnt send the the dell streak from 'this' clip?....
look at post#1 in http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=996213
I wish it was an april fools joke.... yeah I'm sure it's not that streak .... The screen and front bezels were brand new and had plastic wrap on them.
I gave up on Dell calling me back so I called them and talked to the same tech that did my first replacement. I told him I was surprised how fast the replacement got here but Decision One, Dell's refurb company, did a horrible job on the refurb. He laughed and said they shipped it so fast they forgot to repair it. He spoke with his supervisor and set up a new replacement (for the replacement).
I'll post an update when it gets here.
Just got the order update... it looks like they are sending me a brand new one:

Replacement Streak
Well I received the new replacement streak on Monday. It had two dead pixels but I decided I could live with it since it was actually working and had no damage... Now there is an entire line of dead pixels on the screen... Guess I'll be calling again in the morning.
Thats not good.
And replaced with another brand new one by Dell... Much quicker this time I might add. But I'm putting it up for sale in the xda marketplace.
I am glad you hada faster result. I am so infactuated with my Streak, I wish I could affortd to buy that new one from you, buddy. You are going to make somebody happy!
I loved my streak too but just had some back luck with the lasts ones. My main complaint is the black glossy bezels for the buttons and camera/speaker panel.
The screen is perfect for typing on. All my friends with Iphones loved the size and the screen too.
I like that big green grin you have in your sig. So, will you still have a streak after selling this new one?
You all are lucky... In my country Dell support is miserable and there is no such thing as replacement....

[Q] Did anyone else get a brand new XOOM back for the 4G upgrade?

I just got my 4G upgraded XOOM back and it appears to be a totally new device. My Xoom had taken a beating. The back cover was bent in from an impact that actual made a bend in the frame itself so it never sat level. The screen also had a bubble that flashed anytime it was touched.
The XOOM I received from Moto was just like it came brand new wrapped in plastic. I see no signs of any of the damage I had...
Needless to say I am beyond happy, but wondering if they did this for everyone or just felt bad that my precious XOOM had seen rough times.
Got my original back. Knew because they left my screen protector on.

Same. What was weird is that they applied a screen protector on top of my own, and it was just the one that originally came with the device, with the labels on it telling you where everything is located.

That's a nice anecdote. I wish we would hear more good stories like this, cause there seems to be a lot of bad vibes about Moto from some folks on this board. It makes me a bit sad.
Mine came back with a different body and buttons. I made sure to mark the obviously independent components before I shipped it so I'm positive they're new. The bottom plate with the ports on it is the original, the ports themselves, as well as the screen, so I don't know if that means all the guts are the same or not. It went in with Tiamat Moray on it and came back completely wiped with 3.2.2, unrooted. When I say completely wiped, I mean completely wiped. OS and thats it. I was hoping for a new one myself. My original couldn't OC over 1400 without issues. We'll see once I get this thing rooted up.
Rumor was there was an electrical fire at the location, so could have been that or they decided that since it was still under warranty to fix it while it was there.
Hopefully they will replace these "milky" screens for all of us too.
Same here,
Sent mine in on Oct 3rd and got it back on the 12th. They put that clear plastic on top of my screen protector also.
I got a free dock and extra charger cable in the box which is nice although the dock is kind of useless as I have to take the Xoom out of the case to fit it in the dock.

there're two different dock case-holding accessories that come in the box. One for no Case and one for the Xoom+Case. Glad motorola thought of this, because i won't have used it if i had to take off my case every time
On another forum a user mentioned that when they got their xoom back it had a new screen on it(their original screen had nicks and such). So maybe Moto is doing chassis work on damaged xooms that come in?
Hah, thanks for the info. I thought one was just glossy and the other a rubbery matt finish. Never occurred to me one would be for the case! The free dock was a nice touch. It did take them almost 6 months longer than they claimed at launch.
Same exact thing for me...no explaination or anything. How I found out that I got a new one, was the fact that my screen cover was removed.. so I emailed them and asked why they needed to remove it...they looked it up and found I had a different serial number. Of course the did the speel of it was quite clear no accessories sending it back...They could not answer whether or not it was a new or refurbished though...I am quite upset at this whole thing. my xoom was in perfect shape and ran perfect, I am worried about problems with this one. I asked if my warranty is now extended another year and they nope, just after my purchase date in Mar...Don't know exactly how to react to all this and why they can't answer what happened to my xoom! Sure glad I did a complete wipe...
i think they gave me a new shell but kept the innards because mine was still encypted, but the screen had the overlay of a brand new xoom

Back Cover cracked today

Crack showed up out of no where on back cover on the lower side.
Anyone else experience any cracks. I didn't remove the cover today prior to noticing the Crack.
Are you going to get a metal batt cover replacement?
Sent from my SCH-I535 using Tapatalk 2
I'm going to call at&t first. See if I can get it replaced. Then I'll go from there.
Can you take a picture of the cracked cover?
I called at&t, and they said I need to go into the store since I pre ordered through the store. They said no warranty claim since physical. I dispute that since I didn't do anything to break it.
I'm not surprised it cracked considering how wafer thin it is. Clever clips though, not clips with hooks that'll wear out, but a male tit.
I ordered a white spare from a Hong Kong seller. Says it's a Tmo one but I didn't see a logo in his pic. Hope my blue phone doesn't look too odd two-tone.
Wow I am worried as well the backs are super thin. On the other hand this phone is on all carriers So replacement parts should be cheap and abundant.

anyone else? N4 box already opened (did not link acct)

My N4 came today (sorry to those still waiting) and I was wondering if the box for anyone else had already been opened? I had two strips of black tape holding the box shut (could easily see the one below had been cut). There was also a bunch of dust and a hefty scuff on the film covering the screen. My account was not linked during purchase.
Did they do this for everyone to apply an update or something, or did I get a RFB phone marketed as new? (bought from playstore)

That sounds shady.. I'd call them about it and inquire as to why you received something that had been tampered with.
Definitely call them. Someone tampered with it either during packaging or shipping. It could be the shipping company so don't jump to conclusions, but photograph the box how it came and photograph the phone itself. Call Google support and ask them if they can replace it since it came like that. You should have the receipt to show you received it and called them the same day also. You may have to email or fax them the photos and receipt. Good luck and I'm sorry that happened to you!
the phone seems fine so far, and I did a factory reset just to make sure there wasn't anything weird installed. The tape used was the same type that the box is supposed to have, so someone at LG had to have done it (since google doesn't handle the phone itself). So the box was "sealed" but clearly after it had already been opened once.
The book, charger, cable, and SIM tool were all either sealed or had the film still on them.
Very odd...
Thanks for your input
Actually, I would say you got lucky and should definitely keep it. The reason is that you probably did get an RMA unit, which is a GOOD thing and here is why....
Before defective/returned units can be restocked and used as RMA units they have to be shipped from Google back to LG, where they are then inspected and repaired (if necessary). Once this is done they need to be tested then shipped back to Google. As you can imagine, this process takes many weeks and usually months. Therefore, any RMA units that are sent out at this time will be brand new phones.
And here is the plus side I alluded to in the beginning... From my past experience in dealing with Google I've learned that RMA units are pulled from their original packaging then hand inspected and tested. Once every single thing checks out they are then put back in the box (with the second black sticker) and ready to be used as an RMA unit. Because of this you can pretty much guarantee that your RMA unit should be absolutely perfect.
Of course there are always exceptions but this is why I actually prefer RMA units. :good:
mine was like this as well, and i received mine weeks ago during the first Nov batch. black tape was cut, new black tape/sticker applied. i was also missing the bezel protection film (only had front and back)... no problems with the unit though... looked brand new.
might be part of a random QA inspection
Mine was from the first batch and had two layers of tape without the bezel film. Its been great, I wouldn't worry about it
Sent from my Nexus 7 using xda premium
Thanks guys, I feel better now. The "scuff" i had mentioned initially was actually a little bit of residue on the front film. I'm guessing there was a sticker there, and it had to be pulled off when tested. As you said, there was no side film, just front and back.
:highfive:
I don't think a large number of these N4's came with the side film anyway. Both my original and my RMA unit didn't have it and both coworkers phones didn't have it either. It appears that the norm is to not have the side film.
No side film here either..
sent via xda premium with Nexus 7 or Nexus 4!
I wouldn't worry. I got in on the first order of phones and got 2 (one for myself and the other for the girlfriend). I got it a week later and both boxes were double-taped with one layer having been cut (and taped over). Because I was on the first batch, they were definitely new units.
From what I understand, it's likely due to random quality checks. They probably open a box once in a while and check to make sure that there aren't any problems. For the record, though, while my girlfriend's is good, mine came with a few problems (namely the yellow blotches from the glue) so I had it replaced. My replacement came and had dust and a few scuffs on the film, but so far so good! Oh, and none of the three had any film on the sides (only the front and back).
mines had tape on the UPS packaging tied with the shipping label on it.
On the inner box, 2 strips of black tape on each side with screen film on front and back.
I wouldn't worry about it though, as long as everythings good. No reason to delay yourself by another couple weeks just because the box tape was tampered?
Received mine today. Opened the courier's shipping packaging and the whole lot fell straight out!
The 2 black tabs were fine but the the narrow side of the box opposite to the white label had been cut open through both the outer and inner boxes (not even neat cuts). The internal packaging was pretty beaten up as well. The phone seems fine, save for common issues so I'm not sure whether to take any further action, just disappointed that someone thought it was acceptable. Cannot work out why this would have happened, why cut it open on the side?! Any ideas? Thanks.
