Dust under the screen... - EVO 4G General

Has anyone successfully cleaned the dust in their htc evos?
I have some dust in the top left corner near the htc logo and it is definitely under the screen and not under my screen protector.
Is there a way for us to open the evo and get to the area of the screen in question and use a can of compressed air to get the dust off?
If there is a way where are the directions? I haven't seen a how-to on opening the evo to get to the screen area.
Thanks in advance.
My phone is great working condition (rooted with custom kernel, theme, etc) and I would rather avoid having to bring my phone in if I don't have to.

I have the exact same problem. dont know whats causing it. but upper left. its been growing over the last month. making its way out into the center slowly but surely. very distracting. id love to be able to get rid of it.

dust, top left here too. not much, but i can see it only under sunlight.

Same, it's only noticeable at the right angle and light. For now I will wait it out. Hopefully it doesn't get too bad in a short period.

Same here. Have not noticed it on my wife's yet.

Its because of the gigantic unprotected hole for the audio. Happens to all Evos.

Yes I have it also. I contacted HTC directly and you have to send it to them and they will keep it for 2-3 weeks. They also said in the email that there technician will determine if its a warranty fix or not. So good luck. Anyone else get theres fixed?

Nope its not from that I had a dust shoot plug since I got my EVO and it still had dust under the screen. Took the phone to the repair center and they replaced the screen. The screen is a complete unit which includes the black plastic and the buttons. Its all one piece. They showed it too me after they took it apart and we had no idea how the dust got in there.

So Sprint was able to fix it at there repair center? Is it a quick fix or do you have to leave it? Did you have to buy the phone from Sprint also?

It takes about 20 minutes I did not leave the phone it was still rooted. I bought it at radio shack. Problem was the ear piece started crackling like it was blown. the guy worked on it some more now the ear piece doesn't work at all and a replacement EVO is on the way. Another post exists about this. They told me they have 3 revisions of the screens mine was rev. 2 they replaced with a rev. 3.

I had the same problem. I unrooted (big deal) took it to a repair center and they were going to clean it out for me. Turns out the internals of the power button were broke and I walked away with a brand new phone. Went home, used unrevoked and rerooted (another big deal) and haven't had any problems after having the phone for a month. Just take it in. Worst case they clean it. (Rooting and unrooting is too easy. Don't be lazy. Its a new phone.)

They can't clean it the screen is a sealed unit it has to be replaced. They didn't care that the phone was rooted. I called and asked what their policy was on rooted phones they didn't care as long as you aren't having software issues.

Not what the Guy at sprint said. He said they had cleaned a couple other ones.

I don't know how I saw it.

The piece all the way to the left is the screen the dust gets inside of it. It does not come apart. Maybe this second photo but I don't believe the dust was under that glass. I think it was in the display itself. Either way they replaced all of it.
I can't really ague that the dust wasn't under the glass maybe it was. I also can't argue that they can't take the glass off maybe they can. Either way I didn't care as long as it was cleaned.

In the pictures you posted it looks to me like it lacks a complete seal and more of an adhesive to keep the two layers together. But like you, it really didnt matter to me as long as it was getting resolved, and it was even better news I left the store with a brand new one.

I have the exact same problem, dust in the upper left hand corner.

I just realized I have dust on the upper left hand corner also. I am kind of pissed it's only a little over a month old.

Same thing, yet my evo is only two weeks old.
Sent from my EVO

I just had my screen replaced at Sprint because of dust in the upper left corner. The rep told me it was a known problem. Had my phone back in a little over an hour and a half. Gave it to them rooted and running Fresh...not a word was mentioned about it. This was on my launch day Evo with the Nova screen. I think the replacement is an Epson, but I don't remember how to check.

Anyone open the bottom? My USB port has been sort of spread too wide and it's loose.

I was thinking maybe I could take off that bottom "HTC" cover and gently pinch the sleeve of the USB connector back together. Anyone successfully done this?
Thanks!
this is exactly why i use the dock & WANT the car dock..
It just pops off, Google for a tear down.
I'm in the middle of taking mine apart to clean dust from the screen. Can't get a warranty replacement cause the phone is rooted. The bottom piece is a real pain to take off, but can be done with some patience. Just make sure to use a plastic tool and not a screwdriver. I used the ifixit teardown guide and a youtube teardown guide.
Quick question, how long was it before you got dust under the screen? Also did you notice any signs such as the screen not being totally flush with the housing? I really need to know because I'd like to root my N1 but it's only been a month. Also from what I've seen around the forum there is a gentlemen that can help you get a warranty from HTC but idk about now that you've opened the phone

Had my phone a couple months before I noticed any dust. The bottom left corner (where there was dust) seems like maybe it's sealed as 100% as the other corners, but nothing obvious at all and no clicking sound type stuff that others have reported. I posted some pictures in the dust thread.

I told them I'd rooted and they guy said my warranty was void. Said I could send it in and there's a chance that they would take it, but also that they could charge me for a board swap, which is $196. He couldn't give me a certain answer how it would be handled. Said that they take care of the warranty service in their Houston location, which wasn't where he was at, so he couldn't find out for sure.
I have dust on the side of my screen. One white speck just to annoy me. I wouldnt mess with taking it apart in fear that i might add even more dust underneath

I dont get why people are doing this. If it was me, I'd keep quiet about the bootloader's status and see if they notice.
It's not like you can hide the telltale padlock.. It's there for a reason. HTC made it easy too see if you voided the warranty.
Indeed you can't, but the technicians may not care, or even be paying attention when it boots up and miss it, or even not bothering to turn it on for something like a dusty screen.

I was told that if they notice, they'd likely charge my card $196 to replace the main PCB. The other alternative was that they'd call me back and tell me the warranty was void and send my original phone back and have me send back the replacement. Either way, I have to wait til that all plays out before I could root the replacement phone and get it set back up like my original. Instead, I spent two hours with the phone I've got and the screen looks like new.

I appreciate the response I'll check it out, I am just extremely worried. At the same time, I have never had my phone replaced. I usually just work on them myself for all those simple problems. I don't know that my screen is sealed properly, it clicks occasionally but hasn't been lately. But it definitely doesn't sit flush with the right side..

Dust under the screen

I have, I think, 2 tiny specs of dust on under my screen. They can only be seen in direction, bright sunlight. I dont think I care. Anyone else?
Yes, I do care about the dust under your screen.
...If it's true, then I'll be worried. That kind of thing irritates the hell outta me. My Droid is in pristine condition after 15 months, but the one tiny spec under it's screen still catches my eye.
Are you sure its under the screen and not under a your protector? (If you have one.) I think I would feel all kinds of skeeved if I saw dust. But that probably comes from my photography background. Lens with dust in it? Eeeew. I dont see dust under mine. But then again there are so, so, so many finger prints.
(Goes back to munching peanut butter and jelly sandwiches and Xooming. )
I just noticed dust under my screen as well. Very not cool. Come on Motorola, how lame of you to not seal up the screen. I have not even had mine for a week and I notice three pieces of dust under there. They are really not noticeable unless I get that morning slanted sun light to hit the screen. I do however shudder to think of how dusty it will be in a year if I already have this much in a week.
Just noticed a dust spec under my screen as well. Had the XOOM for over a month now. It's highly noticeable when I'm using an app with a white-lit screen background. (Like Gmail). This is so not cool. Not to mention, I can't open it up to clean it because it will probably void my warranty.
Yea I have one little spec. Not sure what it is because its white so I'm assuming its dust and not a pixel/screen quality problem.
Its situated right underneath the back button placement in landscape so its super irritating. I might exchange.

Yup!! I also have dust under my screen. One little spec of dust. It really does bother me too, I kept not even thinking it was under the screen so I kept using a cloth on it and it just wouldn't rub off. Then I finally took a closer look at it, ahh it's under the screen, how Nice that is Moto!!!

I had one in the center of screen, returned my xoom over it. My new xoom has one near a corner, but it is much smaller than the last spec.
OK. That's weird. I have the dust spec in the exact same spot others do.... opposite of the power button.

really wow, i am freaking out.. i guess i shouldnt get this xoom.. could it be dead pixels?? man my galaxy tab didnt have as many issues
I just exchanged mine for having one right by the back button. so far so good on my new one. Wifi only model.
you could always take it apart and clean the screen. here are the instructions to do so. It is the same for wifi xoom as well.

I wouldn't advise anyone to take it apart. Cuz you might add more dust to it. Just by opening it you will be exposing it to alot more dust around the house or wherever you are, even from your own skin. Plus it void you warranty am uncle motor will not exchange it for you. The best option if still under warranty is to exchange it ASAP. I too have notice a little spec near my back button, but am way past warranty so I don't have that choice. But it's a shame that Motorola miss this potential issue. Now I know the screen is somehow expose, I can only imagine what will happen in years to com. That why I can't wait for the Outterbox Defender Series Xoom Case.
As far as I know, the display is not glued to the screen glass. Unfortunately, this means that always some percentage of xooms and even after some time using it, some dust will filter in between. However, I prefer to have a little dust on my screen than having to pay 400$ to change the screen in case it gets scratch or broken, which is what would happen having an iPad.

yeah true i mean i took mine apart because its easier to just wipe the dust away but scratch that this will void your warranty, only do if you know what you are doing and have the right tools. if not you risk damaging your device.
I have what looks like a piece of red lint under the screen it is not a dead pixel(you can see it under strong light with the screen off), it is in the center and bothering me. I called up Moto and they are having me send it in for repair. I am wondering if they are going to even try to clean the screen or send it back and say sorry only cosmetic and not a warranty issue.
I have two Xooms, one is Verizon's 3G and another is Wi-Fi version. Both are perfect with no dust under the screen on neither one.
Both tables spend quite a bit of time outside in a dusty area here in AZ. So far so good, no problems at all.
Another idea... How about original poster would make a poll? This way everyone can vote and we will have a better idea of what situation is.

pray that the phone starts making awful noises and constantly reboots itself.
Then you have a reason to take it to Samsung repair centre.

Nexus 4 Back glass shattered, won't power on.

Hey All,
The other night my phone back glass panel shattered while inside my pocket. I'm not sure when/how it happened. Now, I have a solid red light when charging and the phone will not turn on. I've tried various combinations of holding power + volume down, but to no avail.
I've got a ton of pictures and some saved games data I'm trying to get off the phone. Is there any way to do this?
Also, I called google and they are sending me a new one, but I didn't mention the broken glass. Do you think this will be an issue? I've also had it rooted for about 1 month now.
Any help will be greatly appreciated.

You will need to open the back cover and unscrew the two screw pins that are holding the battery. Flip the plate over and put it back in and screw them back together. You will need a T5 torque screwdriver and small philip screwdriver. The phone should power on now.

I don't see any reason why they shouldn't charge you for the second phone: the screen on the first shattered - mechanical damage, it has been opened - this is not allowed. All these will leave you without warranty.

Oh I did. The lady said broken glass voided the warranty. So I hung up and called back and just didn't mention it.
I don't get it, whats the warranty good for if shattered glass voids the warranty?...
the whole phone is practically a glass statue.

Exactly. The glass breaking randomly should be covered by the warranty, since it's the damn problem. They even updated the design to include nubs on the bottom of newer models to prevent the glass from touching any surfaces 100% flat.
I had to order some plastic tools to open the case. They should come tomorrow. The new phone hasn't came either, ordered Friday night.

it may be a manufacturers defect, but the fact the device is going to be tampered with, and opened up; at least from a business standpoint, they shouldnt have to replace it. i hope it all works out for you, but on their end, giving you the refund/replacement would be questionable business practice. they lose money from it but gain customer satisfaction... tough call lol.
Update:
My pry tools came into today and I was able to remove the back. I then removed 1 battery screw and I cannot remove the second one. It is so ridiculously tight that it started to strip the screw. I switched to a flat head that fit exactly and the screw bent the flat head. (cheap metal i guess)
So my plan now is to go to the hardware store and get a brand name 1.0 precision flat head which will hopefully work. If that doesn't work I think I have a small enough drill head to drill the screw out.
One problem after another... this phone is really pissing me off.

Dust under glass.

After a couple of hours on my pocket i noticed that there is a lot of dust under the glass just on the top of home button. No way to clean it. It´s sucks, phone which is supposedly IP68 water and dust resistant in two hours looks like my old note 4. Can´t take photos for now.
Any of you guys with black phone also noticed that? I can live with but it drive me crazy.
Cheers.
You sure it's under the glass and not just stuck to the top? It's strange that dust could get through. If so, I would contact the retailer and get it exchanged as it sounds like a defective handset.

Yes, black version.
I went to Samsung customer service. They told they dont see nothing strange (of course). They offered to send it to Samsung official service on Madrid (Spain) to check if there is some kind of physical damage and let them decide what to do.
So probably i will do that on monday. other 2 weeks without my phone.

From my personal experience and "investigation" I was able to remove most of the dust with a very thin sheet of paper and lots of patience. I put the paper between the glass and the frame and pushed the dust out. It took a long time though.
As for the investigation part it appears that the black coating doesn't extend all the way to the edge of the glass which means there's a very narrow part of the glass where the dust can get stuck and stay visible.
It's a near perfect phone with 2 very annoying downsides, fingerprints and dust getting stuck around the glass frame, at least with the black version.
I have this same issue. Driving me crazy...
If these phones are supposed to be water resistant, have you tried to stick it under a tap to see if it washes out?

Click to collapse
No... wouldn't that ruin it cause it water resistant but I don't think under any pressure though..
I have that issue around the speaker grill mesh

It's annoying as hell but I guess I live with it unless it makes it way to the camera or the proximity sensor
Sounds like a defect.
Dust under the screen means that your phone is not water proof.
Id go back to the store and get another one.
I had this with a gaminng system. Took it back and got another one.
It does not mean it's not water proof it just means it's not sealed around the edge, it's sealed further in as there's a small crevice
