Windows Phone 7 port to HD2 - HD2 General

Is anybody working on porting this to the HD2? Would be interesting to try it although I do like the Sense UI which WP7 wont have.

I knew nothing about Android until recently.
I was just curious to find out why so many like yourself were saying every where, "Android is better", "Get it" or you got Windows Mobile? That OS is terrible.
Well, I had to try it, and I put Android on my HD2.
You can see the version I am using on my signature.
It runs very well on my phone. And yes, Android is nice.
I have tried all the Android Ports. The one I am using now I think is the best.
But, I got to tell you:
My Windows Mobile Energy ROM in my signature is better than Android.
Windows is more polished.
I do not see Android as superior.
Energy Windows ROM with Cookie Home, all the latest HD2 Registry Tweaks, and the latest Sence 2018, plus the most recent HTC software updates from the new Oboe devise is amazing, fast and reliable. Android got nothing on it, except may be the live wallpapers.

After seeing the serious limitations that are coming with Windows Phone 7, I am not in the "I want to try it out" group and with recent news of AT&T being the exlusive partner = suck nads even more

it isn't looking likely at the moment (certainly not a fully featured port). This is the best post to monitor for progress:
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=685272
As an aside, some of the EVO based Android HD2 builds are very good. I dumped WiMo a while back

Never said Android was betterI was just hinting that from what I've read shouldn't be much different , however thanks for the feedback.

The HTCANDROID project! Let's get it running!

Hey!
As i've previously mentioned here once (I think), i started a small forum where I tried to gather all the setups for running Android on various HTC models. Now that the HTC G1 (Dream) is soon released, we will will get some very interesting challenges while trying to build Android ROM's, etc..
This forum is great, but its also very big. Thought that it might be a good idea to have our android resources on a separate forum?
Anyways, thought i could register a domain and such, but for now the forum is at http://www.connect-utb.com/htcandroid
Some of you are there already! Hopefully, with the experienced user base we have here, we can get Android ROMS and whatnot for our HTC models, as the HTC Dream looks rather poor. (Although better devices will surely come in the future).
you must be joking. Android is a total OS unlike apps that we see all over which are portable among HTC devices. It takes months alone just to get Android as it is today for the kaiser. Mostly everything for WM can be ported among other devices which some exceptions to nontouch devices. It'll be a long time until you see Android ported over to more devices than now. My suggestion would be to use a device that's got android projects already in progress or at your nearest convenience to buy a device with android on it.
Think we misunderstand each other, but you dont believe that if we can extract the android ROM from the HTC Dream, and modify and install it on lets say, the Kaiser?
You can always try before saying that it isn't going to work.
I will track this post because i'm very curious by the Android OS.
I get it...and completely understand what this is about...it's HTC...which means theoretically we should be able to at least somewhat get it working...I've started a wizard thread on your new forum in hopes that any information or progress getting it ported over gets posted all in one location for easy access....kudo's for thinking ahead as I dont think android is going anywhere soon and while this forum is very useful it's mostly for winmo devices....nothing wrong with speading the wings a lil bit and branching out...
looking forward to the press conference!!
I would say we should be able to get Android to run on the OS level of our devices, but it will probably need a bit of modifying. However, since it's open source I'm hoping the modifying will be a lot easier because of this.
Hey,
I was just on HTC homepage ( htc.com ), where the G1 is shown.
They printed the specs, which are very similar to the diamond
Same chipset, same rom size, same ram size,...
SO I think, it would be ( maybe easily?) possible to port android to the diamond

Same here!
If my memory does not fail, I remember that one of the first peaks at Android was being run in a Blue Angel. So, I guess there is a big chance that we might in fact be able to see Android running on more than one device (of course, you will have more or less features depending on the device's capabilities and hardware limitations, namely apps that work with an accelerometer, etc).
Maybe, the development should be worth following because as much as I don't want to believe it, my device (Blue Angel) will only trick death for so long (by death I mean not being able to move to newer versions of WM) and we will need a way to pass the time .
HTC Touch Vogue in progress of being ported
Hey don't forget about the senior member "DZO" that started ANDROID porting to HTC Vogue and it is Successful
This is his direct link to the files : http://cs-alb-pc3.massey.ac.nz/vogue
And here is the link to the posting: http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=382265
I think he did a GREAT job porting Android. I am running Android 0.9 with most of the featuress except installing programs but only because he is the only one that does that. So, he needs help! I am sure... Plus, on this site people are cheeping in for HTC Diamond so he can work on that too...
Here is the link: http://www.myhtcphone.com
So, if you want something done we should start by contributing either money, or programming support! I wish I knew how to program this
ahhhh I wish I would have fully functional Android on my HTC
Thanks for the support! The forums are slightly active now!
Hopefully, we will be able to get Android running more or less flawless soon! As pointed out, its possible!
he he nice link, it seems that there are allready htc devices running with android.
just wondering, is it possible to have dual boot in one device ?
hmmm, seems to have no desktop syncing.. this may be a huge set back for anyone trying to get androig running on another HTC device.

well currently (or in the case of the vogue) android is being booted via haret (a linux bootloaded) running on top of windows mobile.. so i guess its already kind of dual boot
For now, Android has to be run from within Windows Mobile, so no true dual boot yet
Already started

Someone ported Android for BlueAngel?
Please can someone tell me if Android is already running in BlueAngel? If there is a way show me how. Thanks Man!!!
Maybe I'm mistaken, but wasn't Android made so that it can run on a wide range of devices. I, for one, can't wait till its ported to samsung omnia. Damn, that would be good!
@Coldheat,
What does the cab file do? Its an OS, so cab file??

Possible to replace windows mobile with android ?

Hi all,
Just wondered if anyone know if it is possible to replace windows mobile completely with android on the HTC HD2 ?
I have read articles around the net with how you can from windows, run HaRet and it can boot into Android, but would be better if you could replace it completely.
Link to arcticle
Does anyone know if possible ?
I can only imagine that would be incredibly difficult, atleast if you wanted Sense to run well ontop of it since it's adapted ontop of Windows Mobile. Maybe not, worth a shot I guess?

Actually, Sense isn't the problem as there are now Android phones running Sense (obviously an Android version, not the Windows one).
There's an ongoing thread about getting Android to work on WM phones. I believe it runs, but about 50% of important stuff doesn't work, so it's not worth doing yet.
Search the forums - it's there somewhere.

People are already working on it.
However, it's a difficult task and most likely we'll have WM7 before Android works on the HD2 and nobody will care about Android anymore.
Or there will be better hardware running Android at the time they manage to make it run on the HD2.

Windows 7 Mobile ROM's ?

At one point, I thought someone mentioned trying out some Win 7 mobile ROMS?
Is anyone actively developing one of those?
Is progress slow on them since Android is taking over?
Will we see one for the Vogue? Or has it hit its limit in WinMo 6.5.5 ?
Even though I have converted to Droid, would still love to tinker around
with WinMo 7 if it ever comes out for the Vogue.

Your kidding right?
Windows phone 7 has not been released yet (it is rtm.....no devices yet). If it is ever ported it would be to something like the HD2. I'd say slim to never for the Vogue.
So......Android and 6.5.5 for the Vogue.......unless the devs here shock the ****%&#$ out of us, but my guess is even if someone does it because they can....it would run slower than molassas on the Vogue.

I flashed my vogue to 6.5, and I can boot Froyo from my micosd. Its cool and all but, Android just doesn't seem to work on the vogue, like its not made for it. I don't know maybe its just me. I'm really not a big fan of the windows mobile OS either, so I'm not really psyched about the 7 realease...

I tested many of the 6.5 ROMs, personally I preferred NFSFAN's or Vin's. Some might say they were outdated due to new packages being available, but really you could update those yourself.
I tested Android extensively on the Vogue as well, more so now since it is no longer my primary phone. So many people claim it's a life saviour for the Vogue, I disagree. Several things were buggy in even the so called stable releases. On thing that bothered me was it did not like flight mode, the phone always required a reset after turning the radio back on after too long a period. As a Pilot, I use flight mode quite a bit so that was ****annoying. Many other little things, the music player was always buggy, camera not functioning properly. For all the people who say Android on the Vogue was ready for daily use.........I have to wonder if they've used a real Android phone. I now have the Desire and that thing bloody cooks. NONE of the problems present on the Vogue port are there, everything is lightening fast / almost instant (especially Froyo).
All that aside, the Vogue did run 6.5.5 just fine. With the right ROM, Manila worked good as well. I still think the Vogue is a great phone, especially in Canada with UMB. Alas, I finally upgraded after always being envious of newer phones like the Diamond, Touch pro, Touch pro 2 etc etc and got a Desire. I can't say I regret that decision. The Desire is beyond awesome, I'm still going to use my Vogue to help test newer ROMs, but it looks like there just isn't much out there, especially on the winmo side.
The closest thing to a Windows Phone 7 ROM dump out there was in the Dev Kit - once devices start making their way into the hands of the public, the brilliant minds at the root of the modding community can take a look and see what can be done with it.
I actually DO expect a WP7 ROM for this phone to exist, we'll see by about the end of October when the WP7 phones are released (I don't believe any WP7 phone has a firm release date, yet). Android has been a huge boost to this phone, but you can tell it's not an exact match - ESPECIALLY when running from a MicroSD - if you actually flash Android to the phone, it's about 10x better, but still by no means perfect.
I'm expecting WP7 ROMs to exist, to require flashing, and to be "good, not great." We'll see what happens in the next couple of months.
NuAngel
Couple of things here, fellas:
1. I will move this thread to general since it really doesn't have any development on it. However, it is a good topic nevertheless.
2. Da_G was working on porting WP7 to older devices (namely the HD2), but has encountered quite a few roadblocks with it. We have gone through the "will it run?" or "will it be ported?" since 2003 when the Blue Angel was the top of the line phone, so this conversation kinda rings a bell
Unlike other versions of WM, WP7 seems to be more tied up to hardware (things like light and tilt sensors, GPS, etc). Also, remember that microSD cards (or any removable media for that matter) cannot be used under WP7 (M$ standards), so we don't even know if the OS can handle external storage yet, so running it from an SD card may end up making the whole system not be able to run at all unless it can be convinced that the SD is actually on-board memory (this is just a guess, so please don't kill me if I just said something terribly stupid).
If it is ported, it will probably run slow and get better as time goes by... that is how it's been since XDA started. Keep your hopes up (and your Vogues around ) the devs in here are experts at shocking the world and proving M$ wrong when they tell us that something cannot be done.

100% Functional ROM

I'm currently using a Vibrant (rooted, flashed, blah blah) but I've been looking into getting an HD2 to play with now that they're going for dirt cheap on craigslist. Before I do this, could anyone tell me if there are any 100% functional android roms out? I had an hd2 when it first came out, and wasn't a winmo fan. At all. But now that there's been a lot of progress made, I'm willing to give it another try.
No... there are currently no Android ROMs for the HD2. you still need a Windows Mobile ROM and run Android off of the SD
Please refer to the Android Development section in the other HD2 area for Android builds and news regarding Android development.
Nope, there is no a 100% working build yet. All android builds have users reporting SOD, long wake up time, and other issues like low in call volume levels.
Alright, thank you both. As for winmo, one of my main concerns was the lag in texting, using sense, etc. Have any steps been taken to improve these issues? I would search the forums if I could, but I'm getting a pretty lousy connection here in my building. Also, I didn't get very good 3g on my HD2. Have any connection fixes come out?
To answer your questions, No and Yes(Maybe). Texting through the HTC client is still as slow as ever, but if you disable it and use the regular WinMo text program everything is gravy. And the connection issues are probobly just your area, but you can always flash a new Radio ROM and see if it helps any.

Wow are stories are exactly the same! I had a HD2 the first week they came out then sold it because of WinMo. I also bought a Vibrant and still have it (Rooted and playing with ROMS). I now bought a HD2 to play with and experiment with ROMS and Android on it.

The world will never know!
I can tell you that there is an offical 3.15 tmo rom out there as a RC. I've put it on several phones and so far can state that it has cured all problems we've experienced with the HD2.
I need to test swype+text tho, forgot about that one!!
Official 3.15 ROM eh? Where is the link?
Actually it's 3.14, and still officially in testing phase, although it's more of a release candidate. Splash screen says "Test, not for sale" and all that.
So "official" was a bad choice of a word, but I did get it directly from TMO.
I too own the Vibrant and got an HD2 to play around with. The HD2 is nice, but I love my Vibrant, and would never use the HD2 as a primary phone until a complete Android port is available. Nice hardware, just a POS OS. I am curious to see what the update brings to WinMo on the HD2. It goes without saying that I am anxiously awaiting a 100% functional Droid ROM on this thing.
See, its people like this that bring WinMo down for no reason. WinMo, especially on the HD2 is no "POS OS". WinMo runs circles around Android as far as compatability and open-ness is concerned. Android may look "nicer"(if looking like Ubuntu is nice...), but WinMo has it where it counts...*cough no rooting to access file system cough*.

Have you tried installing Cookies Home Tab Editor on your HD2? It's free and makes a Winmo phone have the same functionality as Android with all of the icons, widgets, etc. Supports multiple pages of icons with a home screen just like Android, but also with the sweet Windows mobile stuff as well. Double the awesome. Check it out if you haven't.
WinMo is just a little more nerdy in terms of customization compared to the Iphone and Android. There is a lot to learn and if you aren't at least semi computer savvy and into nerding out on your phone (reading a lot), it's not the phone for you. I wouldn't recommend it for my 60 year old mom.
Mostly, Winmo phones aren't awesome out of the box usually. In terms of out of the box, the HD2 is the best winmo phone that I've seen. Sense is clean.
I have an HD2, Jailbroken Iphone and a Rooted G1 and have played with newer Android devices. The HD2 is by far, still the best. It just does more awesome stuff. You can customize anything on Winmo. ANYTHING.
I really like all three operating systems though. None of them suck.

[Q] Multiboot WM6.5, WM7 and Android?

I'm a newbie at flashing HD2. I'd like to use both Android and WM7 before maybe choosing one of both. But I have several apps like a gps tool that work only on WM6.5. Therefore i'd like to keep WM6.5 also. Is there a way to multiboot these phone OSes? I have seen another one posting this question in January but no one has answered so far.
Also I didn't understand the required steps to set up either 6.5 or 7 as main os and dual boot (just in case multiboot is not necessary) and Android.
Can somebody synthetise the steps please? What do I need?
I know this is probably redundent with things already written but I didn't full understand what has to be done.
Thanks for any help,
Who
this is not yet possible as windows phone 7 and windows mobile both only work off nand and you cannot have to os on the nand memory
Ok...
Not cool. I have co-pilot live GPS system on 6.5 and some other stuff I bought. Is it worth it to change to WM7? How about synchronizing with outlook, active sync is replaced with zune. Is it ok?

I have to say im torn between the two but only on a couple of points
Wp hands down beats WM in just about everyway you can think of, i sure as hell wouldnt change it now that im used it, getting used to it is the key point there, it is different from WM, it does not pretent to be it, it does not pretend to be anything other than WP.
Outlook syncs fine if you use an exchange server or live service, i have one of each that syncs with my phone and i dont have issues at all.
However i do miss the little things of WM, namely that its a beast of an OS, it'll do almost anything you throw at it, i have some amazing WM programs that i really need so i have my old Touch HD running them now.
I would gladly pay money for someone to get WM running of an SD card, however i believe one of the differences of WM2003 and WM5 was that WM had to have persistant storage, (WM2003 devices used to effectively hardreset when you pulled the battery unless it had the backup battery) Essentially the OS was ran from RAM and this is where i think it might not be possible as WM5 cant be run from RAM, at least to my knowledge
Thanks a lot for your evaluation
For a while I was torn between Android and WP7. Until the very recent updatable Mango release (THANKS YUKI AND XBMOD!) the Android Nand install was a clear winner - no matter how many times I tried WP7, I missed my Gingerbread too much. Now with Mango I am finally throwing in the towel and installing Android on SD, just to end my suffering, hehe. WM6.5 wasn't even in the running, to be honest, I spend the past 8 years with various WM builds and just as many devices from 2003 onwards, still have my HTC Universal with WM6.5, but have no desire to use it at all on my HD2.
Mango is pretty sweet, smooth and visually lovely.
Ok with all this, for now i'll stick with WM6.5. Although WM7 is very attractive I have to much stuff depending on 6.5. Now I'd like to load Android on an SD so that I'll use most of the time Android and when needed, reboot to 6.5. But at the threads for Androids on SD I have difficulties finding the build that works best. Can someone point me to the most reliable threads or the place I can find the required, most stable stuff?
Thanks for all the help already given.
you can use co-pilot on an sd android build http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=738128.

With my experience with forums that require a certain number of posts, it often leads to posts worst than crap! Senseless crap! I rather people post stupid questions rather than senseless crap. Just my opinion.
On topic: It'll be groundbreaking if anyone can accomplish getting WP7 and 6.5 booting on the same phone. Their status on XDA would become legendary! Last I heard DFT abandoned that notion. I sure wish they would have more transparency with their projects. Maybe somebody outside their team can give excellent ideas. Why limit yourself?

I am not sure I would be keen on booting WP7 and WM6.5. Can't say I miss 6.5. Everything I needed I found in Android and navigation seems to be better as well. So even if it was available, I wouldn't bother.

Dude, there is no such thing as WM7.
Ok my misstake. I meant ofc WP7. Not WM7. But so far no one pointed me to a good stable and recent version of android. Any help here please? I looked at boxmax but that doesn't seem to work that well. Even with patches I still see graphical glitches. I also didn't find an option to either revert from the SD loaded andriod to WM6.5 but neither could I find a 'turn off' button so I could restart the phone in WM6.5. I had to remove the battery.
So thanks again to finding a good working Android for SD

Its in my sig below
I used Yuki's Gingerbread 2.3.4/5 2.8-3.0 Nand, so went with the same for SD install after the latest Mango 7220. I doubt any version that runs off SD will ever compare to Nand. The same Android that was flawless off Nand has proven to be a bit sluggish and somewhat less stable. Still, can't complain really - got the best of both worlds and my torment about what OS to use is no longer.
The only thing that would make it perfect would be non SD locking Mango with a simple menu within OS to alternate between the two.
