Windows 7 Mobile ROM's ? - Touch CDMA General

At one point, I thought someone mentioned trying out some Win 7 mobile ROMS?
Is anyone actively developing one of those?
Is progress slow on them since Android is taking over?
Will we see one for the Vogue? Or has it hit its limit in WinMo 6.5.5 ?
Even though I have converted to Droid, would still love to tinker around
with WinMo 7 if it ever comes out for the Vogue.

Your kidding right?
Windows phone 7 has not been released yet (it is rtm.....no devices yet). If it is ever ported it would be to something like the HD2. I'd say slim to never for the Vogue.
So......Android and 6.5.5 for the Vogue.......unless the devs here shock the ****%&#$ out of us, but my guess is even if someone does it because they can....it would run slower than molassas on the Vogue.

I flashed my vogue to 6.5, and I can boot Froyo from my micosd. Its cool and all but, Android just doesn't seem to work on the vogue, like its not made for it. I don't know maybe its just me. I'm really not a big fan of the windows mobile OS either, so I'm not really psyched about the 7 realease...

I tested many of the 6.5 ROMs, personally I preferred NFSFAN's or Vin's. Some might say they were outdated due to new packages being available, but really you could update those yourself.
I tested Android extensively on the Vogue as well, more so now since it is no longer my primary phone. So many people claim it's a life saviour for the Vogue, I disagree. Several things were buggy in even the so called stable releases. On thing that bothered me was it did not like flight mode, the phone always required a reset after turning the radio back on after too long a period. As a Pilot, I use flight mode quite a bit so that was ****annoying. Many other little things, the music player was always buggy, camera not functioning properly. For all the people who say Android on the Vogue was ready for daily use.........I have to wonder if they've used a real Android phone. I now have the Desire and that thing bloody cooks. NONE of the problems present on the Vogue port are there, everything is lightening fast / almost instant (especially Froyo).
All that aside, the Vogue did run 6.5.5 just fine. With the right ROM, Manila worked good as well. I still think the Vogue is a great phone, especially in Canada with UMB. Alas, I finally upgraded after always being envious of newer phones like the Diamond, Touch pro, Touch pro 2 etc etc and got a Desire. I can't say I regret that decision. The Desire is beyond awesome, I'm still going to use my Vogue to help test newer ROMs, but it looks like there just isn't much out there, especially on the winmo side.

The closest thing to a Windows Phone 7 ROM dump out there was in the Dev Kit - once devices start making their way into the hands of the public, the brilliant minds at the root of the modding community can take a look and see what can be done with it.
I actually DO expect a WP7 ROM for this phone to exist, we'll see by about the end of October when the WP7 phones are released (I don't believe any WP7 phone has a firm release date, yet). Android has been a huge boost to this phone, but you can tell it's not an exact match - ESPECIALLY when running from a MicroSD - if you actually flash Android to the phone, it's about 10x better, but still by no means perfect.
I'm expecting WP7 ROMs to exist, to require flashing, and to be "good, not great." We'll see what happens in the next couple of months.
NuAngel

Couple of things here, fellas:
1. I will move this thread to general since it really doesn't have any development on it. However, it is a good topic nevertheless.
2. Da_G was working on porting WP7 to older devices (namely the HD2), but has encountered quite a few roadblocks with it. We have gone through the "will it run?" or "will it be ported?" since 2003 when the Blue Angel was the top of the line phone, so this conversation kinda rings a bell
Unlike other versions of WM, WP7 seems to be more tied up to hardware (things like light and tilt sensors, GPS, etc). Also, remember that microSD cards (or any removable media for that matter) cannot be used under WP7 (M$ standards), so we don't even know if the OS can handle external storage yet, so running it from an SD card may end up making the whole system not be able to run at all unless it can be convinced that the SD is actually on-board memory (this is just a guess, so please don't kill me if I just said something terribly stupid).
If it is ported, it will probably run slow and get better as time goes by... that is how it's been since XDA started. Keep your hopes up (and your Vogues around ) the devs in here are experts at shocking the world and proving M$ wrong when they tell us that something cannot be done.

WM6.5 on Hero

So Android is being ported to WM handsets... is the opposite possible?
I really dig my Hero, and Android is nice, but hands down, I will take HTC Sense 2.5 on WM6.5, 10 times out of 10.
Arent the guts of the Hero and the TP2 very similar... this should not be that hard for the XDA fam, right?
Sorry to burst your bubble, but nobody here really wants it bad enough to put forth the time and effort to port it. Many of us see WM 6.5 as the inferior platform that it is (compared to Android), and it doesn't seem worth it to a lot of people. Another thing is, WM isn't open source like Android, so it would probably be even harder to get working. Sorry mang

Most likely NO, why? time to port all the different drivers , UIs etc. and another reason...is WHY?? WinMo is a piece of sh#@ that is why we are using Android based phones
I love some of the apps on WM 6.5, but it's SO dead to me. I don't ever want to see it ever again, as long as I live.
To answer your question, I doubt it will EVER happen. Ever. The reason being is that drivers would have to be written from scratch on lots of the hardware. There would have to be a bootloader modification too in order to actually load the WM image, which I'm not sure how that could be accomplished without a tremendous amount of work either.
Usually when the guts are similar (as you're right in TP2 and Hero) but the screen is definitely different, there's a trackball, what do you do with the hardware keys, etc. Lots of "behind the scenes" differences IMO.
You never know though, I always try not to say "never."
That would be going backwards, and tje 6.5 ui is aweful ugly with the ugly menu buttons on the bottom. Ohhh dont forget about the lag issues
No, but you should be able to pick up a WM 6.5 phone coming soon to a dollar store near you.
I gotta say I made the switch to android because I was able to boot android on my Touch but going from android to winmo is simply insane...
Why dont you buy a TP2 and use the android build thats out, my friend got it up an running and is now saving for a hero or supersonic. I used to swear by winmo even when the gayphone came out but Android ****s on Winmo 6.5 EVERYDAY
People are replacing WM6.5 with Android for a reason.
Only a fool would go the other way.
This may just be the craziest thing that I have ever read.
I think its safe to say most us here came from winmo, I also think its safe to say after about a day or less we said,"im never goin back to winmo." Im pretty sure everyone meant it too. the winmo guys are still sayin
That their waiting to switch because android is still new and not polished enough lol I was sayin it too lol but I was wrong as hell hence why im here
It would be an interesting endeavor, but as others have said you would probably have trouble finding someone with the technical knowledge who cares to do so. Most android users have experienced WM, but most WM users haven't experienced android. I think what will be interesting is when WP7S comes out, then you might see people trying to get that on our phones.
But really why should anyone want to port WM6.5 on to android phones? For the same reason many hacking projects start: just to see if we can
There's a major reason Android can run almost anywhere whereas WinMo is basically trapped on the devices it was originally developed for:
Source code
The marketplace is finally beginning to understand the power of that distinction.
I understand the questioning since they are porting Android to WinMo phones.. but did you ever stop to think that the reason they're doing that is to get rid of WinMo? Why in the world would you want to put WinMo in place of Android?

they are not doing it to get rid of winmo, its just one of those things thats cool to have, just like any other app.if us winmo users wanted android, we would buy android, i mean why would you go with just android when you could go winmo and have both? it not perfect yet but it is getting better. and standard android is so ugly to me, it just looks so simple{as does standard winmo} without sense ui.but sense on winmo just looks alot better than android sense. just my 2 cents.....

If source code had anything to do with it, BlackBerry and the iPhone wouldn't be so popular.
Android is overtaking WM because it's a better, more consumer-friendly OS with more, better apps.

Truer words have not been spoken regarding why we all left winmo
i think if a dev wanted to he could port wm to the hero or any android phone. but as others i came from webos & winmo and android is by far the best os ive ever used. i also think wm7 will be a huge fail as android is close to dominating the market share right now. i know what im sticking with!
android is close to beating apple, winmo and palm. it has them all running scared right now, that's why apple is suing htc.

Update on Android on HD2 - New Article

Hey all,
I have been waiting for news on this and it has been May since there has been any word on the Android OS being able to run on HD2s. Supposedly they have gotten over most of the major conflicts with this anticipated pairing. Check out some of the information from this article below:
Title:
HTC HD2 Android Port Makes Strides, Nears Release [Community Overcomes Problems Plauging HTC HD2 Android Port, Hopes to Have Public Release Available Soon[
Info:
With Windows Mobile dying a slow and painful death, Windows Phone 7 right around the corner and Android gaining a considerable portion of the smartphone marketshare along with buzz, the HTC HD2 remains a device lingering in limbo, begging for some attention. Regarded as one of the best Windows Mobile 6.5 powered handsets with a 4.3-inch capacitive display, 1GHz Qualcomm Snapdragon processor, 576MB of RAM, a 5 megapixel camera, microSDHC slot and WiFi/Bluetooth/GPS/3G the HTC HD2 lacks no where in terms of hardware, but arguably everywhere in terms of software.
...
Apparantly, the port was plagued with problems regarding the HD2′s processor along with the Linux boot tool dubbed HaRET that would be used to actually make the Android port. Luckily, those problems have been overcome giving the HTC HD2 Android port the much needed kick to near public availability. Be sure to check back soon as we track the port’s progress.
If/when this port is made available, will all of you HD2 owners out there make the jump from Windows Mobile to Android? If not, why?

I am not sure how true this is but hopefully it does come out soon cause i do miss my Android OS. Let me know how you guys feel about the article if you want to search for it.
I also have heard that someone actually has a working Windows Mobile 7 on a HD2, its in the development stage, can someone post on that if they know more. I am hoping for a dual boot so I can use both and have the best of both worlds.

hey theres a pretty cheezy app in the omarket that looks like android its basicly like the sbpshell i guess but its kinda cool to mess around with =) and i cant wait for andriod i check up on it every day haha i hate this winmo 6.5 crap
Keep in mind we are still a long way from a fully functional port that you would actually want to replace winmo with. I wouldn't expect a fully working port that can actually use most of the hardware (bluetooth, wifi, gps, camera, etc.) and that works like an actual android phone for at least a year... and I would consider that fast development. Look at all the other ports for other winmo phones... none of them are fully functional yet... they all have missing parts and bugs. Great progress has been made in the last week for the hd2, but theres still a long way to go.
guess if you could do a dual boot with windows and android..would that make it the first hybrid OS? maybe call it WinDroid..or has that already been coined?

There are several other WinMo phones that can boot into android... this isn't the first winmo device there working on this for. That's how we pretty much know what to expect with the port and how it will take a long time to get it fully functional... They'e been porting android to winmo devices for years... even before there was an android device released.... but not one port is fully functional yet like a dedicated android phone. These android ports are fun to play with and if theres specific apps you want to use its nice to be able to boot into android... but they usually aren't good enough to replace winmo as your daily phone os for a long time. So don't expect your HD2 to become as functional as an EVO or any other android phone anytime soon.

Like I said earlier... the android port is not going to be as good as an android phone. Your not going to want to use it full time and replace windows with it for at least a year. You shouldn't have gotten a HD2 if you don't like winmo, because thats the only os that will run well on the phone for a long time. The android port will be nice to play with, but its going to be very buggy and not very functional for a long time. Look at the android ports for the other winmo phones... and they've been under development for years.
I don't know about that...I've used the port on both the Touch Pro and the Touch Pro 2 and both are REALLY good. Really...the ONLY thing that stops me from using the TP2 port in everyday use is the "no external speaker". It's usually not a big deal durring work hrs since it's on vibrate all day anyway...but when im home and stuff gets loud...vibrate doesn't work for me. The only other things that don't work I believe are camera, bt, and gps(which KIND of works). None of those 3 would stop me from using a phone every day. The Android port for the TP2 is blazing fast compared to other devices with the same processor(i.e. g1/mytouch) and offers you that beautiful wvga resolution(480x800). if and when the HD2 gets to that point...i'd use WM durring the day for work, and Android by night lol
Is triple booting possible?
I thuroughly enjoy the freedom that the HD2 allows us. If you know how to us WM propperly, there isn't anything that this hardware can't handle. Adding the ability to boot into Android, or WP7 for that matter,is simply an added bonus. Will I install it on my phone? Of course. There isn't much that I haven't installed on my phone. But did I buy this in hopes of a port to another OS? No. I would have bought a phone that came with said OS if I needed that.
Thank you to all the developers who have worked tirelessly to make our phones so much fun. Keep doing what you do for those of us who can't.
^i agree wholeheartedly. I bought this phone after having a G1 and before that having a Wing, MDA and SDA. I am used to WinMo and Android and though I love Android, I can't say I'm dissatisfied with WinMo at all. I love the freedom to flash roms and all the different sorts of customization options I've got. If Android is what you want, I'd say don't get the HD2 from the start.
Speaking of Win 7 I hope the developers are working on it for the HD2. Rumor was that it will not be able to run on it.

Why even bother if it is soo buggy and not fully functional? Just for fun? I don't get it if it is sooo far away from a fully functional port why is everyone so excited. Sorry but your statement makes me feel like this android port is a big waste of time. Im sure next time I get a new phone I will try out an ANDROID phone.
The reason we are excited is because it brings new life to our phones, it allows us the freedom of choice. I love Windows and I love Android and the prospect of getting WP7 makes me excited because I don't have to shell out money for a new phone when I have a phone that I love right here, to do whatever I want and make my phone what I want it to be. It isn't a waste of time, it is a huge step to the development for a Android port to an original Windows phone. Saying it's a huge waste of time is like saying cooked roms is a huge waste of time, it adds another spectrum to our devices allowing us to customize, mod, hack, and personalize as we please.
I just booted Android on my HD2 and I can not wait till it's stable and I can play around with it even more. I got to the Set Up Device screen and played with the menu ! I'll post a video soon!

100% Functional ROM

I'm currently using a Vibrant (rooted, flashed, blah blah) but I've been looking into getting an HD2 to play with now that they're going for dirt cheap on craigslist. Before I do this, could anyone tell me if there are any 100% functional android roms out? I had an hd2 when it first came out, and wasn't a winmo fan. At all. But now that there's been a lot of progress made, I'm willing to give it another try.
No... there are currently no Android ROMs for the HD2. you still need a Windows Mobile ROM and run Android off of the SD
Please refer to the Android Development section in the other HD2 area for Android builds and news regarding Android development.
Nope, there is no a 100% working build yet. All android builds have users reporting SOD, long wake up time, and other issues like low in call volume levels.
Alright, thank you both. As for winmo, one of my main concerns was the lag in texting, using sense, etc. Have any steps been taken to improve these issues? I would search the forums if I could, but I'm getting a pretty lousy connection here in my building. Also, I didn't get very good 3g on my HD2. Have any connection fixes come out?
To answer your questions, No and Yes(Maybe). Texting through the HTC client is still as slow as ever, but if you disable it and use the regular WinMo text program everything is gravy. And the connection issues are probobly just your area, but you can always flash a new Radio ROM and see if it helps any.

The world will never know!
I can tell you that there is an offical 3.15 tmo rom out there as a RC. I've put it on several phones and so far can state that it has cured all problems we've experienced with the HD2.
I need to test swype+text tho, forgot about that one!!
Official 3.15 ROM eh? Where is the link?
Actually it's 3.14, and still officially in testing phase, although it's more of a release candidate. Splash screen says "Test, not for sale" and all that.
So "official" was a bad choice of a word, but I did get it directly from TMO.
I too own the Vibrant and got an HD2 to play around with. The HD2 is nice, but I love my Vibrant, and would never use the HD2 as a primary phone until a complete Android port is available. Nice hardware, just a POS OS. I am curious to see what the update brings to WinMo on the HD2. It goes without saying that I am anxiously awaiting a 100% functional Droid ROM on this thing.
See, its people like this that bring WinMo down for no reason. WinMo, especially on the HD2 is no "POS OS". WinMo runs circles around Android as far as compatability and open-ness is concerned. Android may look "nicer"(if looking like Ubuntu is nice...), but WinMo has it where it counts...*cough no rooting to access file system cough*.

Have you tried installing Cookies Home Tab Editor on your HD2? It's free and makes a Winmo phone have the same functionality as Android with all of the icons, widgets, etc. Supports multiple pages of icons with a home screen just like Android, but also with the sweet Windows mobile stuff as well. Double the awesome. Check it out if you haven't.
WinMo is just a little more nerdy in terms of customization compared to the Iphone and Android. There is a lot to learn and if you aren't at least semi computer savvy and into nerding out on your phone (reading a lot), it's not the phone for you. I wouldn't recommend it for my 60 year old mom.
Mostly, Winmo phones aren't awesome out of the box usually. In terms of out of the box, the HD2 is the best winmo phone that I've seen. Sense is clean.
I have an HD2, Jailbroken Iphone and a Rooted G1 and have played with newer Android devices. The HD2 is by far, still the best. It just does more awesome stuff. You can customize anything on Winmo. ANYTHING.
I really like all three operating systems though. None of them suck.

[Q] WM6.5 on HD7

just an idea - if there is no "backward compability" for WM6,5 applications on WP7, then - from technical point of view - if anyone can install/move/copy the whole WM6,5 from HTC HD/HD2 to HTC HD7 or any of WP7 phones? I mean, are there any "hardwarish objections" for such operation?
The incompatibility issues alone and work required to do this would be immense
Also posted in wrong forum. All queries should be directed to General Forum which I've now moved it to
This is kinda funny, but I would love to see older OS(WM 6.1/6.5) on newer phones.
Why do we have to move to Windows Phone OS? We’re going from "pocket PC's" to "Smart Phones". That is a step backwards. I’ve got my HTC diamond 2 running perfect just want a faster phone, with HD Video cam. When I had a Samsung Omnia, I fixed all its problems by installing a moded HTC WM6.5 rom, I want a new HTC now, but hate WP7! I got into Xda's cos you can make um run how you want, WP7 is like why I hate the IPhone. I would love to get the HTC 7 Pro if I can just keep the OS I’m using on my HTC Diamond 2, its perfect now. I can’t be the only one that feels, windows phone is just windows mobile Basic.
Pleases give us our full OS back! or how's this. A choice of OS
Windows Phone X.X User
and
Windows Mobile X.X Pro
Does that make it less confusing? I really do want to know of a good 6.5 rom for the HD7 or 7 Pro are available. Thank you
P.s. what are non-phone PDA's going to run on? Is wm6.5 the last OS ever?
Windows phone 7 is a sh*t transition from windows mobile to full fledged operating system like Windows 7. WP7 sucks big time, no productivity for me.
It is all true... I'm totaly disapointed with my HT7 because of the WP7..
I need WM6.5 or at last Android on it...
Some one help us!!!
There are no devs to do this. They lack time, knowledge, drivers, blah blah.
We give them money, they won't do a sh**
Simply said, there is no community like it was few years ago. Shame.
that might be true, but nobody forced you to buy a device with an os, that you don't like, if you simply wanted to give different OSs a try, your best choice would have been a HD2, which handles wm6.5, 6.5.x, android, wp7, ubuntu, windows 95, 98 and meego. that way, if you are unsatisfied with either OS, you still have plenty of others to give a try.
I'm not a programmer, so I’m sorry if this is impossible for something I’ve not see. But couldn't someone make a rom file that you copy directly onto the inbuilt SD micro card. Of course this will mean hard resetting the phone it will install from the inbuilt Rom copy of WP7. But you just pop the card in a pc, maybe partition it 512MB program storage. And the other 14.5MB storage card (after lost formatting space.) I though the HD2 and HD7 are almost the same Xda device. Please PDA WinMobo OS's cant die! It does the most
All I want is Smartphone’s that work how I want, not how I’m told to use um.
Losing this is stepping back in time.

Enabling WM6.5 on HD7
Hi Guys,
I have been a PDA user and in particular a a windows mobile user for 7-8 years now. I am a total fan of modified ROMs and hats off to all those developers who have been developing modified ROMs on many various devices for many years now, I extend my appreciation and gratitude now. I have also been an xda-developers member for many years now, and have read many many posts and forum topics, so please disregard the post count as I didn't need to post in many cases.
I recently graduated; though I am a communications engineering graduate I did do embedded systems in my last year. Having said that, I am now in a position to start playing around with such devices and possibly do some development work.
I, like the people on this thread have mentioned, do not like WP7, the the fact that you cannot directly sync with outlook, and even worse, HD7 Pro has hardware keyboard that is completely useless and WP7 doesn't even go in to landscape mode unless typing up messages.
On the other hand, even though I appreciate Android, I do not like it either for various reasons I'd rather not delve in to. I am a fan of hardware keyboards, therefore I also had in my mind the possibility of porting WM6.5 to Desire Z though I have not even researched the feasibility of it yet.
Therefore, I announce to my fellow xda-developers.com users and readers of my intentions to begin work on porting WM6.5 to HD7. Though I do not have any experience or knowledge on the venture. The start will be a slow process and request the patience of everyone.
Having said that I would need a mentor when I run in to problems and when I need help. I would appreciate it if one of the more experienced developers here could express their willingness to help when needed I would be really grateful.
Having said that, those with experience, is there a good link you could give me where I could start reading up on what I need to learn about the device and the OS in question?
I presume I would need to know the specific system components of the HD7 and HD2, what components are identical, similar and different? I believe that the architecture is similar if not identical? Thanks.
Regards
Hi all, im new here to start join this site, because i just bought HTC HD2 started to use wm6.5, this site lot of information help me to choose the collect phone model before i buy it, before i was thinking of which OS is the best & use full for me, WM6.5? WP7? or Android? i need to choose the OS can support GMXT GPS its important for me travel lot, both of them WP7 & Android cant make it, so i choose HD2, i was bought 3 days ago in Vietnam HCMC, try to find best price in town, almost every sold out! get from website information for used HD2, almost sold out too, until 7th shop i get it, used but look new but is T mobile HD2, USD370 deal..
WP7 is a god send of an OS, I still use my WM oh my HD and ill come to that in a sec, but WP7 is actually very good, you do need to work with it for a while, but once you get used to it its amazing.
Now, WM 6.x is a beast of an OS, there is nothing out there quite like it, I believe in the next installment of MAGLDR they are looking to allow WM to be installed via magldr, this may open the way to allow SD/RAM builds of WM to run on a HD2 meaning, WP7, WM6.5 and android could all potentially be bootable at the same time
The differences between the HD2 and the HD7 are notable, its not a straight copy, unfortunately there is a big lack of intrest in WM so i would keep your eyes on android coming to the HD7, that will use something similar to MAGLDR and if thats the case you may find WM is installable as well.
DOnt hold your breath tho, we've been waiting for a new MAGLDR version for several months now and as i said, there are differences so there may well be serious driver related issues, which ironically is the stumbling block of WM! Had HTC and QC not shafted us with no driver support for the WM6.5 OS then it would actually be a modern day OS contender.

I have changed from a Windows Phone hater, to a Lover. Still think Win Mobile was the most advanced mobile OS ever, but WP is fast getting it all back :good:

I now really have to say, I take back what I said. I originally posted on here saying I hated WP7 and wanted to flash to WM6.5. but since, just b4 Mango. I changed my mind. And have loved being along for the ride towards the superphones WP8. Miss MyMobiler and would be nice if you could run WM6.5 in a virtual environment on an unlocked device. Then I could still play with what I suppose are now legacy apps or .cab's as we used to know um. phone and sms wouldn't need to be in the V-OS rom as WM wasn't originally made for it just drop um. And V-drives would just appear as the app size as far as wp7 thinks just a dream/idea. I know that wouldn't be easy. but if anyone fancied the challenge advantage is it would work on all WP7> handsets
Windows Phone 7.5 is good now. If you tried it at the beginning and was thinking it was the windows iPhone. Thank god it's not!! It is diff to WM6.x but worth getting used to

I would still like to see wm6.5 ported over along with wp8 since technically we have an sd card and we can have nfc sim cards.
There is a windows mobile emulator to wp7
http://www.xda-developers.com/windows-mobile/windows-mobile-running-on-windows-phone-7/
and here is one that maybe can be ported: http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=411154

Are there any other phones that can be WP7 flashed?

Hello
I have just broken my HTC HD2 trying to replace the USB port (accidentally sethered the ribbon cable going to the volume button putting it back together).
Ii was wandering if anyone knows any phone out there like the HD2 which can be hacked to update to the new WP8 when it comes out, or is as versatile at hacking as the HD2.
I am considering buying a new phone, but my main attraction of the HD2 is that i can hack it to update it to the latest install of my chosen OS (in this case WP7)
Are there any phones that can be hacked liked the HD2?
Thanks
Regards
Hello,
None that I know of.
The HD2 lacks a front camera IMHO, internal storage memory too (not the TMOUS version, but the 3G frequencies don't match the European needs unfortunately) and its processor's speed will look outdated sooner or later as compared to more recent devices, but all in all, it stays the best pocket PC ever having been designed, and yes, it's the only one to allow so many OSes swapping.
It may be both because of not being locked by the maker, and because a lot of people worked on the possibility to port other systems...
Anyway, it remains the only one up to now.
It may also have something to do with the fact that Windows Mobile users have always been people curious to experiment with their phones, while nowadays, WP7 users will just buy a WP7 device, and so on for Android, I don't know. Remember Windows Mobile seems not to have been so popular in the past, though having been a real pioneer, far, far before the iPhone was even a project, and it did gain some real fans, that were generally from a generation where a computer was used to program and experiment with (just have a look to my nickname )
It looks like some time has passed since then, and smartphones changed status, from swiss knife-like tools, to consumer products, thanks to makers and software editors policies, and thanks too to people changing phones twice a months.
I personnaly won't change mine for an empire, and I'm not ready to drop WM6.5.x. I bought several used HD2s from eBay, and if you really intend to keep the possibility to swap operating systems, you should do the same.
Otherwise, just buy a recent WP7 device : you'll still be able to upgrade anyway, as long as you keep up using WP7 of course.
Just keep in mind that devices, that run wp7, wont get wp8. They'll get wp7.8. But those are only official updates.
Developers can always port and mod

The TOSHIBA TG01 can run Windows Phone too. to let you know...:cyclops:
thanks Z80 man
I have a feeling someone will hack it to be able to use WP8, it just seems like if WP7 can be ported, then will WP8 be that much different?
If it cant be ported 100% then, as im using WP7 all the time now, it would seem that buying a new phone would be a good option! Just not sure i can let go of this amazing phone ive had for so many years!
Being able to switch OS's after WM6.5 and make various improvements etc etc makes it like having a new phone.
Looking at the toshiba phone suggested, it doesnt have any better specs than the HD2.
Shame that no phone like this will come about again!

I'm sure that not only the HD2 will be ported by enthousiasts, but most, if not all recent WP7 devices will be able to be ported to WP8, even if not officially.
Now it could depend on Microsoft's will to lock devices more and more to prevent that. And makers too, actually, as their goal is finally to sell new devices even if you don't need them !
Apart from that, did WP7 became so good ? It was lacking a lot of useful features when it was released...
Thanks, might have to wait and see what WP7 phones can be hacked to WP8

Yea, they released the 7.5 update and i really liked it. Searching is alot easier, and it has OCR for looking at game covers and searching them on the internet along with a music listener now, to tell you what song is playing, all built in.
These are just a few features, but i just like its simplicity, and the apps are decent enough and easier to use than the somewhat buggy ones on WM6.5.
I found issues with WM6.5 that really annoyed me, like two 'OK' button, one which means 'OK to exit the program' and one which means 'OK in the application or menu system.
I think it was a bit of a conflict between wm6.5 and the sense over the top.
But im pretty happy with the simplicity of the WP7, just easier to use, i have my favourite apps to check like the news etc.
And also, even with energy ROM it did crash allot. randomly switching off etc.
Didn't have any luck solving these issues so i tried WP7, and its pretty good!
If you like making apps etc, you can still put them on with XAP so its still pretty open to devs as far as i can tell.
ZTE Blade can also run wp7
