Why does it only show me 1.23GB available fresh out of the box?
I understand the OS itself takes up room, but I know it can't take up 2.5ishGB of it.
Do we really only have 1.5GB internal memory like the Desire Z despite the 4GB claimed on the T-Mobile and HTC websites?
Someone brought up that the space might be set aside for Gingerbread which drops later this year. Could be it.

As nice as that would be, they wouldn't do that and it'd be extra trouble on HTC's part to accomplish...nothing. Even if Gingerbread was a ridiculously major update, it wouldn't account for another 2.5gb of space...
I think the truth is, we got 1.5gb instead of the claimed 4gb.
Also, I have the full system dump on my PC, and it's only weighing in at 1.7GB (This includes the ~1.3GB userdata partition).
If anyone would like to see a screenshot, give me a shout and I'll upload one.
I was thinking that they may have partitioned off a FAT32 section which you could mount to. Vibrant and the Gentouch have done that. Though from a post on tmobiles board, it didn't look like the missing amount was mounted. Total for the partitions was 2169356.

They advertised it as 4GB, so it must have 4GB. If it doesn't then the class action lawsuit will come and you won't even have to do a thing other than reap a small reward. I feel confident that there is 4GB in there, even if it isn't user accessible.

Yeah, I understand it would come and I'd expect it to, just saying that personally I don't think it's that big of a deal.
Honestly I don't see why they'd make it inaccessible, at least not 2.5gb of it. I'm thinking it's only 1.5gb to match the Desire Z hardware, since everything else is the same as far as hardware.
I could be wrong (I don't have a G2). On my vibrant the available space is saying 12.75GB under "Phone storage" but only 1.47 under "Application storage".
I suspect that there's a set application storage area in android up to maybe 1.5GB and then the rest is for the OS and other data (music, movies, files, etc). The Vibrant's storage is 16GB which translates to around 15.xx. Then Android is taking up 1 or so and pre-installed apps only a tiny fraction (50MB or less)...that's why I'm showing 12.75. It's the remainder of the 15-Android (1 or so GB maybe less)+App Space (1.5GB)
Yeah, maybe it's just hidden space that can be unlocked by a custom rom. If the Desire Z only has 1.5GB total, I just have a hard time seeing why they'd hide 2.5GB on the G2.

i agree about the not really caring on the lawsuit bit. but i'm curious to know where it is lol... we didn't buy these phones pre-order cuz it was cheap lol, so if you need the money get hit by a car. more money and easier just step in front... so suing a company like htc whom we like very much would not be cool... just my .02

seriously, i suspect it's there, just locked or hidden for whatever purposes
i'm sure it is there also. it is a brand new phone, i'm sure it is hiding or waiting to be used for something

There are most definitely not 2.5gb of bloat apps.
If there was, it'd be impossible for the considerably-more-bloated Desire Z to cope with only 1.5gb of memory.

Running fresh 2.0d with rosie and launcher2 removed, I just use helix. a2sd with about 80+? apps, dalvik cache not on SD. And I average around 80 mb free RAM during the day. And 90+ after a recent reboot.

I don't actually have a 2TB HDD. I'm using it as a point saying "I bought a device with X amount of storage, and doing everything in my power to not use any of it."
It's basically the same as having 4GB of RAM, and only using 1GB of it. 3GB is completly wasted. Empty RAM does not benefit anyone, nor does any free space. If it's empty, it's wasted.

Even in computers empty RAM is wasted. Most people don't seem to realize that the reason more RAM speeds up a computer is because that RAM is USED by programs instead of the hard drive. If you have 8gb of RAM and only ever use 4, you've wasted 4gb of RAM because it's sitting there doing nothing, instead of being filled with programs/cache information/etc.
It's similar with the phones. If the RAM is sitting there idle because it's not being used for anything it's just...sitting there. It makes more sense to fill it with something than leave it doing nothing, which is the point I believe abcdfv is making.

I still think you should add my explanation of how Linux handles RAM/Swap differently then Windows to that.
Then why is it helpful to manipulate minfree settings?
I suppose it could be placebo but I swear I've found a sweet spot between stock settings and aggressive where my phone runs better than at either extreme. Am I misunderstanding that by your rationale the phone should run just as well at stock settings than any other?
The reason you might be seeing an increase in performance is the "free" RAM is being temporarily utilized when using the phone. The more free the more potential for the phone to use it, but having 124 mb free is most likely useless, the OS will most likely never use that much by itself.
I'm with the others, free is wasted, but that doesn't mean try to max it out, because spikes in usage will take up more than what the phone will report when you check it.

I understand and have always known having a ton of free space is a waste.
But having not enough can be a problem. I just read a post from a sprint admin stating "dont let your ram get to 15 or 20mb because it will cause issues, specially with voicemail and messaging."
I really doubt anything major (not gunna hurt the phone), but problems with everyday use.

You never need over 600mb. Honestly, there's no way you need 500 apps+ (which still probably wouldn't fill up 600mb.)
Does anyone think that it would be ok to simply resize rather than wipe/reinstall/reformat to lower size?
I don't think you can. If you could, I wouldn't. Just backup all your data on sdcard, reformat it, then transfer it all back.

ROFL I have 512mbs and over 100 apps on my phone.. You should attempt to download the marketplace 1 app at a time and see how many of the 150,000 apps you can fit onto your phone
I got my mytouch 4g and notice there was only about 1GB available. I want to get closer to the 4GB that they say it has. Anyone get more than 1GB on theirs? I rooted but i looked in applications not sure what to uninstall to get the most space available. from what it looks like around 20mb is largest file I see.
It has the same lock down crap as the G2 that is using it.

I find this incredibly shady of tmo to advertise 4GB. If they said 2GB, it would be understandable that some part of that is occupied by the OS and apps. But c'mon, 1/4 of the total? WTF...

You guys have to wait for tmo/htc to release a patch or fix for the bug(?). But they may be referring to the total space on the device(inc data/sys/cache) partition combined.
i still think it was false advertisement on their part.. if they would have said 4gb* available were *= 4gb (inc data/sys/cache) then i think a lot of ppl would have been ok with it.
but i just cant return my g2!

I can understand your frustration (kinda) but wtf would you want 4gb of internal storage for anyway? It's not like you can save music or pictures to it. Even without save to sd you'd be hard pressed to fill up the gig they gave us. Is this just about the principle??

to say false advertising is a little out there dont you think? i mean unless this is the first electric device with storage you have ever had :/ anything with storage always includes the stock hardware (look at your ipod for example). if you really wanna get technical you could also complain that it isnt 4gbs in the first place because of how they round disk space

true but by the time you would fill that we should have root cracked by then so youll be able to save the apps to sd either way... i just cant find it to be that much to complain about

not having the full 4gb doesnt bother me that much. Just paying for something and expecting to get everything that is advertised leaves me feeling a little shorted out. but that comes with almost everything now a days.

Can we please forget some of the setbacks for this device and realize what a gem we have? The amazing CPU doesn't miss a beat and I believe is more reliable then the hyped dual cores. (TOO MUCH HYPE !!) 16gb of ROM is plenty enough.

16GB of ROM is nice... but are we able to EXT partition that and do the proper apps2sd instead of the stupid froyo based implementation of it the same as we could an SD card? Or does this not matter as it should be mounted automatically anyway? I'm not sure how all that works with built in memory.

I'm guessing that about 2GBS will be avaliable for apps. All I know is that it's enough and I REALLY can't wait much longer for this thing to come

Regarding apps2ext/sd. Why would that be needed if there is 1-2GB of app storage? The N1 has about 200mb. I still haven't filled that up.

If it's 1-2GB storage then I personally won't need EXT, but as it stands if your app storage goes below a certain amount you start to get irritating alerts and your text messages and such stop going through... and if I don't use EXT I reach that point and it's rather annoying.

Lets say the nexus s has 14GB left over after /system, radio, etc. It would be cool to decide how much of that space you wanted allocated to apps.

As for the MT4G, I HATE the MyTouch overlay on everything. It's not a genius button, it's a goofball button... I still will miss the trackball of the N1 and the color customization that comes with it.

I don't think the FM Radio wasn't hidden iirc, It was never programmed into the kernel or the phone. I guess we did learn as a community that the N1 had the right hardware just no software support.

That's what custom roms are for. Look like ppl wit be losing more than trackball colors on the nexus s. I was gonna get it also, but after the specs, no thanks
for the memory issue, most likely the NS will follow the GS style of 2GB for apps and about 13GB as the "sd card"
As far as cyanogen goes, i sent him a couple messages on twitter asking his thoughts on the Nexus S and he ignored them. and he hasn't said anything about it on his own so IDK.
They have had MASSIVE issues getting CM to work on any of the samsung devices, but with this one being stock google and being the dev phone, it should be easier to get CM working.
Anyway I don't think Nexus S is enough to be a developer phone.
While most other Android phones have SD and trackball support, Nexus S has neither, how can it still be a developer phone? I thought developer phone should have everything that other phones have.
I think Nexus One is a wonderful developer phone, despite front-camera, there's nothing else that Nexus One is lack of.
So I bought my HTC Shift 4G but i think it's Defective. I've called HTC, Sprint, and Bestbuy. The 3 companies say the Phone Has 2 GB Internal Memory(ROM). However my Phone only shows 432MB :

69. MB System
159.6 MB Free space
Could it be Defective or They just don't know what they saying.
Would u guys tell me if ur devices are showing the same ??

I figure the rest is system reserved by the fellows at HTC. That is where the OS/kernel is located. Probably locked away/system mountable only, to prevent us from obtaining root. ( any of you fellows who know better can feel free to correct me.) Just based on knowledge of linux etc. Not much in depth on the droid

I'm pretty sure it does in fact have 2GB of internal memory, however it seems like a big chunk of that is taken up by the operating system and maybe some is reserved for system storage/app caches/etc. Not 100% sure but I think that's why.

That's not actually not true, they claimed that the evo only had 1gb of internal memory but came with a 8gig sd card, disproving your theory right there.

/data - 351.02MB used, 80.70MB free
/dev - 12K used, 186.59 MB free
/devlog - 4.04MB used, 15.82MB free
/etc - 288.83MB used, 102.53MB free
/system - 288.83MB used, 102.53MB free
I'm not a dev so can't interpret it correctly but it does seem there's lots of memory here and there that could probably be partitioned to the /data folder for more app storage once perm root is achieved.
EDIT: I've removed lots of stock apps so your numbers will not match mine.
The first Shift that I picked up from Best Buy was indeed defective. Not because it wasn't showing the proper amount of memory, but because it locked up on me 5 times in the first hour that I had it. All I could do to get it to turn off is battery pull, and then when I put the battery back in i had a really tough time getting it to turn back on. They swapped it out for me, and my new one has been flawless.
i'm wondering (don't quote me on this) if the extra internal storage is hidden/locked by HTC so there will be room available when the new sense drops? i've heard it's a lot bigger than the current version with the stand-alone navigation/maps that it's going to bring with it.
Has anyone ripped one apart and checked all of the chips on board?
I would take it back to the store and exchange it.
Phone should have around 256mb for apps (With all the stock apps installed)
