What is the AC adapter like? Is it separate from the USB cable? I like how Samsung did the Vibrant (which is like apple). USB plugs straight into the AC adapter. One less cord to carry around.
Yes the AC adapter and usb cord are separate like the cord that comes with the iPhone, USB plugs into adapter
Id have to agree, the phone feels solid as hell. Pics [email protected]

Can you confirm if the KB comes loose if you hold the phone upside down?
When phone is held upside down, my screen does move out and up, needs to be spring loaded and stop that from happening

What kind of headphones did they send with it?
Do they go all the way in the ear or just rest outside the canal?
I'm wicked jealous. Here's hoping cyanogen get's his early too so maybe by the time mine gets here (10/5), I'll be able to root it out of the box! LOL.
@tubaking - The screen movement doesn't happen on mine, if I unstand you correctly. Held it upside down and at all angles to try and reproduce the effect. Rock solid on my end
@ericc - As usual the cheap ones are included. I have Klipsch S4, Dr. Dre Beats, and AIAIAI headphones so I never use headphones that come included with phones. Then again I sort of an audiophile

Yeah, I currently use some MEElec M6s.. sound good, but could use just a tad more bass. Thanks for the answer, though!
EDIT: Oh, is the speaker phone decent? Compared to the N1?

Do you have the Beats with the inline mic? I've been thinking about buying some but I want to make sure that they will work with the g2 before I fork over the money.
Does the phone have any sort of hole/loop for hand straps and landyards? I know the G2 is heavy, but I'd still feel more secure being able to strap it to my wrist!
how much of that 4gb is free?
How much of that 4gb is free?
Are the google apps like Skymap and finance un-installable?
@ericc - speaker phone is decent. I'd say it is on par if not just a bit better than the N1, seems to be clear except when on max volume as is the case with every phone.
@JRG - I don't have the inline mic on the Dr. Dre Beats, but I do have them on my AIAIAI headphones and they work perfectly. As long as the contact points on the mic input line up correctly with the 3.5 connection then there should be no problem.
@Resistance - I see no visible lanyard connection. Would've been nice to have.
@absinthenyc - about 1.26 GB free on first fresh startup with none of my apps installed. Almost all google apps are included, but I don't use all of them; would be nice to uninstall some.

I was actually hoping it's used (or not user accessible) cause that means there's more for the system which means longer lifetime for system updates (if they continue the tradition of getting larger each iteration) Right?
Somebody please set me straight if I'm wrong.
like someone else said earlier i wonder if the other 3..... whatever gigs mounts if you connect to the computer??? where would all that space goooo if it wasn't used like that?

I'll exchange mine for another if it has that issue.
I can confirm that it is 1.26 GB FREE, meaning that about ~2.7 GB used for the system or space reserved for future updates (Gingerbread) that T-mobile might have been told about so they planned for extra space for that when having HTC create the phone . Here's hoping

Most headphones that come with the devices are usually crap. Just like with the iPod and the HTC Touch Diamond.

I too have these - and the sound is excellent - probably the best available for bluetooth (i have tried alot)
Only problem is they are not resistant to sweat liek they say (im on 3rd pair replaced by warranty - i run or gym every week day)
so in conclusion - best sound, but bad for training

i would also add that i have a pair of ALTEC 903 bluetooth headphones and they are also very good, a little cheaper than my S9-HD and they sound nearly as good.
They are a more comfortable fit because they are not so solid (linked instead by a wire accross the back of the neck)
the 903 are a bit cheaper

I think the stock HTC ones are quite nice, definitely the best stock earphones I've owned. My only complaint is that they are too small for jogging and they keep falling out. I was looking to buy a new set but then saw the solder mod you can do with the stock earphones and I think I'll be doing that soon as I have quite a few good pairs of extra earphones lying around.
Hi guys!
I had (well stiill have it somewhere) an old HTC wizard and i loved it, XDAdevs helped me a lot with it but well, i needed and upgrade so I bought a Nokia 5800XM. Im happy with it, but now I have the opportunity to change it for an HTC dream, and Id really like to go back to HTC and I dont like symbian very much, Id like to give droid a try.
Yes, I did use the search, i thought there would be some thread like this (since they are similar devices and were released very close) but I couldnt find any.
So, I did comparisons between their specs, and for what i see, the main differences are, dream has qwerty keyboard (big plus, i dont like touch keyboards), capacitive screen (so i guess it means multitouch, vs 5800s resistive), 500something mhz and 192mb ram (5800= 128 ram 400something processor, not big difference but it is something) and hmmm, dont know i got lost.
The 5800 is a bit smaller, has a better screen (360x640 16M, vs Dreams 320x480 65K), FM radio, 3.5 jack (i dont know what kind of plug the dream uses, i would like to know please), TV out, more battery time, better camera (carl zeiss, flash (i use it as a flashlight and works really good), and secondary camera for videocall).. and i think thats it.
Now, you guys, as users, what would you recommend? well if im asking here i guess most of you would go for the dream, but please, tell me ANYTHING, EVERYTHING i should know before making the swap..
is accelerometer good? is GPS good? (my 5800 works fine, but it takes 10 minutes to find satellites so it makes it kind of useless for short trips through the city, it might be because im in Argentina tho)
what about music/video playback? build quality?
If you think i forgot something, or that there is anything i should know before going through with the swap, please let me know! also when im doing the exchange if i decide to go through with it, what should i check is ok and test so i dont get scammed with a broken device?
Sorry if its too long, hope you read it, and that you would help me! Im counting on you guys
Thanks!
You can have the most advanced hardware in the world, but with crap software, it is still junk. Dream is BY FAR the superior.

Capacitive does NOT mean "multitouch". It means it has a HARD surface designed for use with your fingers. Resistive is a SOFT surface requiring (for proper use) a stylus.

Make sure it turns on and boots up. If it gets stuck rather than booting up, then it could have been bricked. Some people will do stupid things, like installing 1.33.2005 SPL and end up with a non-functional device.

yeah i already have those converters in my wishlist, but i think that it will come with one. TV out is not of great use thats true, but it is a cool feature to display pictures and videos taken with the device, and also you can watch a movie or something (not the best quality but can be handy at times).
Yeah, all phone cameras suck, but I like to capture the moment and upload it on facebook to share with friends, and even if the quality is not the best, you can at least distinguish whats happening in the picture, even in clubs at night. also the app to use the flash leds as a flashlight is really usefull, but well i guess i could use a white screen app for that.

Incorrect on all accounts.
Dream is NOT multitouch -- not really, except with some nutty hacks that *kinda* work.
And your idea about multitouch being impossible with resistive... well my ASUS T91MT tablet/netbook would disagree with you. It has a resistive multitouch panel.

Highly unlikely that it will "come with" one. They did NOT ship with those converters from the factory, and not many people bother with them.... you know, with wired headsets being totally obsolete in favor of bluetooth.

The camera works not too bad all things considered. I caught some pictures of a fox snooping around my house a few months ago, turned out nice, but taken outdoors in daylight. LED flashes don't work well -- they just don't give you the same kind of output that a proper flash will, so trying to use it in a dark and psychedelic place won't be yielding very good of results.

Just turning the display ON in a pinch works OK. I wired up a circuit breaker panel that way once.... however, if you want a flashlight, you should probably buy a flashlight.

Just some words upon the topic: HTC Dream last official firmware is Android 1.6 Donut - it has no multitouch feature. But you can quite easily install Android 2.2 Froyo (CyanogenMOD e.g.) - it has such functionality. As the example, i can say that while navigating through picture gallery you can zoom in and out the image with two fingers movement - and it really works...
GPS: it takes one or two minutes outdoors to catch the satellites without AGPS.
Audioconverter HTC ExtUSB -> 3,5 audiojack costs $5 at ebay.com (item id 335ea04db3 e.g., sorry, no link due to new users policy of xda forum).

thanks for replying, i already have my dream!
if a "normal" person asked me what i would recommend, i would suggest they get the 5800.
me? im happy with my g1, i just need to find the right rom for me and also a high capacity non-extended battery. im getting one of those adapters this weekend
Hi jinxie
Have you got your new battery? seems like the 1700mAh battery is the largest that conforms to the original form factor.
For myself, I'm thinking of going with a remote that has a 3.5mm headphone port, probably HTC RC E100, instead of one of those multi port USB adapters.
I'm curious to know which ROM you went with?
hey!
i am just ordering the battery right now.. but intl delivery sucks big time for latin america.. so I will tell you in a month lol
about the adapter, i wanted it because the guy who i made the trade with forgot to give me the headphones that come with the device, but now i have them, and i must say im impressed, despite the looks they fit really well (and thats an issue for me, headphones often fall from my ears, but not these), and sound quality is great, even music with heavy bass sounds good, so i think im gonna stick with these for a while..
and about the rom, im open to suggestions, havent found what im looking for yet, CM6 didnt work for me, im currently using biffmod but not happy with it neither, i wanted to try superF, but im not sure if all the issues it had are fixed yet, also i was waiting for the OTA release, so there must be some new stuff now, but actually what i was really looking for was an equivalent for the dream of the milestone's eclairless, i want the most RAM available i can get without the hack (im rethinking that), im really sick of FCs.
i might flash something today as i came to XDA today to look for a ROM, hope i find sth interesting.. what are you using?
I broke my last dream going from CM6.0.0 to biff's. I did manage to get another second hand dream, in good condition, of craig's list and i'm going to chill on rooting for now.
So, did you order a battery that requires a special back cover? For myself, I ordered the 1700mAh battery, just because I really like my case and I wouldn't be able to use my case with one of the super sized batteries that change the form factor.
I really miss having the music controls on the lockscreen and I can't seem to get that feature,at least for free, on cupcake with the stock music app, so I ordered a remote with headphones because, the stock HTC headphones, though sound awesome but are too big for my ears, and keep falling out. With this remote, since it has a 3.5mm jack, I should be able to use my favorite earbuds from sony, that is if I don't like the ones that come with my order.
I attached a picture of the remote / headphones
The most annoying thing I'm finding, is only having sixty megs or so, for apps, and not being able to remove the stock stuff included that I don't use, like Quickoffice, and such.
yeah i saw that remote, looks cool, but i heard that it might not work depending on the rom youre using.. or sth like that, look it up here in the accesories forum..
how did you "break" it? didnt you just brick it? im sure theres some way to recover it.. but tell me how you did it because i dont want to do the same.
still havent flashed anything new yet, since with the low bat life i get im not using the phone that much, but i might try the new cyanogen 6.1.. but im not sure yet..
btw yes i also ordered the 1700mah, the pohne is big and heavy as it is, with an extended battery i might aswell buy a netbook :/
chences are that you will get your bat way before i get mine, so tell me how much more juice you get from it!
edit: so finally today i flashed chromatic 3.9.1.1 (eclair)
so far so good, very fast, i changed adw launcher for launcher pro, now i want to remove all the extra stuff i dont need/use. then lets see how it goes with all my apps loaded, lets give it a few days
here's my post from the CM forum: regarding my broken Dream. I believe there is a JTAG solution, but I figured just get another used for cheap instead of taking the nonbooting dream apart, buying the necessary equipment, learning how to fix it, or getting someone else to, etc. now I'm using it as an extra charger.
The remote I order wasn't the one I really wanted, but it's coming with the earbuds I prefer, instead of the stock ones that are way too big for my ears.
If I still have this phone, I might get one of the 2850mAh batteries just to see if I can get a full days use on a single charge. But I'm thinking of getting a HTC Desire Z from bell off contract, and using it with rogers.
...Having bluetooth work like it should! I just came from a Mytouch 3G after a year to the Vibrant. The BT on the MT3G was utter garbage! I listen to podcasts all day while at work with my A2DP bluetooth and I couldn't set the phone down on my desk and walk 10 feet across the office without it choking, hiccuping or dropping my connection. At first I thought it was the earpiece so I returned the Jawbone Icon and bought the Blue Ant T-1. Same damn problem! I would walk with the phone in my hand and with every swing of my arm the sound would cut out. I practically had to hold the phone in the hand closest to the earpiece! My 5 year old Moto flip phone had better BT performance than the MT3G did. So once I got the Vibrant the first thing I did was try out the BT performance. Man, what a relief! They put a good radio in there! Now I can leave my phone in one room of the house, go downstairs and not have a single dropped connection or sound hiccup while playing audio.
Thanks Samsung!
The Bluetooth is utterly broken on my devices. It sucks in my car (5+ phone NEVER an issue). Glad yours is working, I am hoping moving to Froyo moving spec to 3.0 will resolve this. Bluetooth is my only complaint about the Vibrant.
While one rejoices, the other complains. Seriously I am starting to think Samsung customized each individual phone for purchase. At least that is what it seems like on these forums with all the conflicting reports.

I love the display. With that said there's a whole list of things that I can name that I HATE about this phone. Mostly poor design aspects on the part of Samsung.

I use napster, bluetoothed to my truck stereo most all of the time. I never drop audio, and I am sure signal drops to 1 bar in places.
For me that best thing is the Super AMOLED screen, many other phones had me thinking of selling vibrant but at the end is the screen I just can't give up. It's like once you see it you will never go back to any other crabs. The best screen ever.

I second that...
Coming from a Touch Pro 2 and an iPhone 3G I like the speed of the Vibrant, the display and am happy with the availability of apps for it. Rooted with the Mobile AP app installed is the frosting on my tasty cake!
I can live with GPS glitches (it's not perfect but it does get me from place to place), shorter battery life etc... The Vibrant isn't perfect but it does what I need it to do without complaining that I'm asking too much from it most of the time

if you choose to void your warranty and negate any possible future support (as if you'd get any anyway)
disclaimer: i am not against voiding my warranty (usually happens the day i get a phone), but this should be added for noobs.
With the price drop, I'm seriously tempted to order one. I played with one at Best Buy for a few minutes (literally maybe 2) and I did like what I saw. That said, I have a few questions...
I think my primary device will remain my N1. I see it as a bit more portable. The Streak will certainly get some regular use when I need a little more size, once I get a good BT, that is.
At any rate, my questions are:
Does the Streak still suffer from large borders around most apps? I think most of this is probably dependent on the app, and the developer making it work for various sizes and resolutions. I know it was a decent complaint upon initial reviews. How's it look now?
I've read a lot of complaints about the 2.2 update. Is it better? Is it stable? Is it better to flash something like DJ Steve's (I think that's the name) or some other custom ROM?
How's the audio performance? Let's split this into three sections. First, audio on phone calls. Decent noise cancellation? Decent incoming sound? Any complaints from those you chat with?
Second on audio, how's the speaker? The N1 has a huge shortcoming there, in my ever so humble opinion. For speakerphone and audio from music/videos, the speaker on the N1 sucks. How's the Streak's?
Audio out and bluetooth audio. I listen to a lot of music at work, and I plug my N1 into my car stereo quite frequently. I can't imagine any issues here, but it's a prime function for me, so I want to sure I won't have any issues.
Video performance. Decent GPU? I don't do a lot of videos, but I can see myself doing more with the Streak. Additionally, I take my son on some road trips, and I definitely foresee him watching movies and playing games while on the road. Most trips are about an hour and a half, up to two hours. He sleeps in the car less and less as he gets older, so I see huge potential here. The N1 GPU isn't that great, sadly.
I've tried to read most of these threads, and I know the vast majority of you are very happy with your Streaks. I'm seriously tempted to pick one up. I also plan on getting whatever dual core comes to AT&T, so the Streak is basically just a bonus. I may hold out for a 7". Pretty torn, but that $400 price point is right up my alley and pretty hard to turn down.
Thanks in advance.
The new ones would be worth less than the old ones because it's worth less (they've spoiled it)
Imagine it being like finding a beautifull girl, you go away for a week, only to return to find she's now 85, saggy tits, has long straight hair, short curly teeth and walks with an upright stoop

Every app I've used so far takes up the entire screen. Some pics in apps don't; TMZ is the one that comes to mind. Other than that it uses the entire real estate for me.

2.2 is very stable for me. The stock UI is pretty worthless so I'm running ADW.Launcher. I cannot speak for custom Streak ROMs; haven't tried any of them yet. Nor have I had desire to.

I usually turn on the speakerphone only when I'm on hold waiting for the next available coordinator. It's pretty much like any other phone I've used. Sound is decent. I haven't listened to any music but I have watched a movie or two and it's not theater sound but it works. I have a Otterbox Defender case that might interfere with the sounds but I have no complaints.

I have a Parrot in my truck that I use for calls and the bluetooth sound for phone calls is great. No complaints at all. I haven't paired my Plantronics 590 headphones with it yet so I can't speak for music over bluetooth yet.

I watched Iron Man 2 on my Streak end-to-end and it was flawless. I was using my Denon headphones for sounds.
Now all that said, my ONLY complaints about the Streak are the battery life and trying to find a car charger that works unmodified. Battery life is to be expected the way I use it. Wifi, 3G, Bluetooth, all on 24x7. But the car charger thing miffs me. I bought a 1000mA USB charger but the Streak will not recognize/charge with it. I've read where you have to solder pins together to work. WTF?
My 2-cents.
Dude, thanks for the detail! Will have to look into the car charger issue.

I just ordered the unlocked Streak today and they offer this bluetooth headset for 99 cents when you buy.
I don't know how good it is but for 99 cents I figured it was worth it. I have bluetooth built in on my vehicle radio, but will probably use a headset more with the Streak.
BTW - thanks for starting this thread to to those who responded, it's been informative.

The charger issue appears to be common with many of the newer phones. I know there are a lot of posts about this same issue in the Motorola owners forums. From what i have read the mod to a cigarette lighter to USB adapter is pretty easy.
Hey!
Phone finally arrived after 2 months of waiting. First impressions are as follows (updated in the future as more impressions come):
The PROS
- Very nice looking device, great build, no gaps in the corners. BUT: the usb flap aluminium colored bit doesn't align perfectly to the rest of the frame. A minor bummer.
- Everything is very fast, nice UI. Easy to use little apps and everything just so well done. Would've preferred the old pull down menu where you got some buttons straight away. Is this changeable?
- Sounds are very nice for a phone. BUT, how do I get earphones to work? I tried the noise cancelling phones and they worked fine. Then I switched to my hi-fi headphones and they didn't work. After that even the original HPs didn't work. What to do?
- Nice notification LED
- Dedicated camera button much appreciated! Makes life so much easier.
- Nice camera as well, compact-like, although shooting could be faster. Photo preview is very fast. No gripes with automation even in dim lighting, works well enough and very nice auto white balance.
- Love the gallery, video and music players. (SGS 3 sucked in comparison)
- Double tap to wake works like a charm (always when properly done, not when too sloppy).
- Overall a very nice phone and will be cherished for years to come.
The CONS
- Minor flaw that doesn't bother me after I've gotten to actually use the device: SIM-card tray is wayyyy flimsy. Good that you get to play with it often.
- I can't charge the phone from usb, so why is it an USB cable?
- Con that doesn't really have to do with the phone itself but the aftermarket screen protector: Its too long for the screen glass. Nillkin glass and plastic back protectors both too long. I also suspect that the sound is affected because it blocks part of the speaker openings. Tough to say for sure.
- Headphones don't work...
Questions:
1. Is it really true that I need to charge this through the wall socket!? No usb charging? Doesn't work on my laptop(s). Can't even connect for data transfer...
2. Anyone else with the Nillkin glass screen protector got it too long? Mine goes over the glass, onto the plastic and it leaves two areas that don't touch the screen in the corners.
3. How can I get a direct call (no call & message, only call) contact "widget" to put on one of the home screens?
4. Headphones, how to get them to work? (see description above)
Update: The headphones do work, it was just not consistent. I think it has to do with the connect activation thing. The noice canceling IEMs are nearly as good as my own IEMs... Go figure. Quality stuff anyways.
My Z2 DOES charge through USB from PC..
I can also charge from USB. Maybe the connection is loose. For the headphones, you need to insert it properly because it's a 5 pin socket. There is a widget called Top Contacts, you can try that if it works for you.

Did you get the L50T version? Of so, it's for the Chinese version which is a bit longer than the international Z2 (L50/W). I ordered the wrong one first from dx-box, but luckily I read on the accessories section about this problem and had time to order the right one before I recieved my phone.

The headpnoes were a software issue I guess, since it had trouble with both headphones.
Top contacts that's in the phone (I got it in finnish so I don't know if its the same)? It doesn't have direct dial I'm afraid but I use it for now.
Still looking for direct dial widget that can do separate mini icons for direct call and messages. Also, where can I access the gesture options? I want to be able to make a call by taking the phone to my ear.
Edit: Found the direct dialing and messages. Found in apps, not widgets, which I found a little odd.

Settings -> personalization -> motion. But you can't make a call, only answer, reject and mute.
Headphones don't work
Ok now this is really starting to bug me. I went for a 5km run and the headphones didn't work. I couldn't even go get the noice canceling ones because I didn't start from home. Fine run and got so much out of it because I didn't have music, but in the future I would like to decide for myself if I want to listen to music.
So only the 5-pin noice canceling headphones work anymore. What do? And please don't suggest to use them.

No I didn't mean the phone icon, that's default on bottom bar. I wanted direct dialing to a person. That is found under apps - quickies - call shortcuts.
It was a widget on my old phone.
New phone on its way because headset doesn't work. Hope it doesn't have any other faults...
So some remarks:
I like Z2 very very much, another year or more with it
The Z2's size is perfect for me. Bacause of the round edges the handling is a bit better than Z.
I like the buttons as well. I love the camera button.
The screen is amazing. Although with today's technology the difference between Z and Z2 (different generations with Z1 between them and over a year between them..) is not THAT big.
If you look straight it is on a similar level although Z2 looks more detailed and natural. But Z is a bit brighter.
The angles are different of course when Z2 doesn't lose anything under any angle and Z does lose it's colour.
But honestly, I couldn't care less about that.
The sound is great through speakers and it's not very quiet but not totally loud either.
I must say the level is ok. The ringtones I use sound loud enough here (I actually use the ringtones bundled with Z2...)
The call quality works for me ok with a more bassy tone than Z...
Funnily for the first time I turned this Clear Audio + off - it doesn't really add anything to the sound.
I prefer eq + subbass regalation.
The UI is great and default apps are fantastic.
With two annoying glitches:
- email is still allowing to have only 200 emails on device even with IMAP, IDIOTIC I would say
- on my FW I cannot add Tasks in Calendar since no keyboard appears. I don't use them anyway but it's just a stupid bug.
The system is flying. The Z and Z2 comparison looks interesting, since Z with 2GB RAM always has about 650MB left,
and Z2 with 3GB RAM after 2 days has about 1GB left. It doesn't matter maybe but lol.
Anyway Z2 is just a bit faster and smoother.
But I also have to say that the technology today is on a very high level.
What means I could actually stay with Z for another year without feeling beeing behind in any way.
Just the geek inside me wanted me to be updated. And I have no regrets.
What else? Ask.
But I think THE CAMERA IS FANTASTIC.
P.S.
Just bought this in Carbon and it's great!!!

I agree with above in 100% and I think it is worth to say a word about battery. For me it was one of big decisive feature. It is a beast, in my situation bigger battery means 1 day more of common use which is 50 or 33% more.
Ah - uncovered headphone connecor - flap in Z drove me crazy
Glad to come back to Sony again. I had Z1 then note 3 then finally to Z2. A lot of improvements from Z1 either hardware or software wise! But I'll definitely miss the remote function.

Good to see a comparison from someone from a Z
How are you finding the wifi compared to the Z (stability and range)? The Z wifi was honestly my biggest hardware complaint, coming from an iphone.
Also, regarding the sound do you mean as a phone, or the stereo speakers for video/music playback? And in comparison to the Z. I did always find the Z audio playback a bit quiet through the speakers (eg I listen to audiobooks when I'm say cooking).
Cheers
I have used the z2 for a 2days, here is my thoughts about the z2 compare to my other phones.
what I like, Camera, UI, form factor, built quality, 3GB Ram, battery life, what I don't like, screen is not as bright as S5, if I turn the brightness all the way up, black text got washed out, I also don't like the audio, ring tone, notification, speaker volume are decent, not great, music from headphone output is
far below than M8 with Viper Audio mod, not even in the same class.
That being said, I don't mean the S5 or M8 is better than the Z2, they have their own problems.
Overall, the phone is fine, not worth the $730 I paid, especially S5 and M8 are being sold for $450 new.
I will flip it when the G3 is out.
