Couple Of Questions...

Hi foks,
I'm getting my Silver Xperia this Friday (Can't wait)
Got some questions.
1. Hows the Camera?
2. Hows the flash/flashlight?
3. Hows the speaker sound?
4. How is the sound quality trough 3.5mmjack? (Or does it depend on what ear pieces you use?)
5. Hows the battery life? I'm almost 24/7 on msn 3G in some cases H and my TyTN II starts in the morning with 100% and ends in de evening 50/45%. How is this on the Xperia?
6. Hows the scroll pad?
7. Hows the panel?
8. Hows the phone in general?
9. Xperia X1, or Touch HD???
I've used the Xperia for 2 hours a while ago (Demo) and coudn't test everything cause the software wasn't correct.

Take your time and read some posts on this board. You will see that all your questions are answered in detail.
Edit: What the hell I will answer them even if I don't own one yet (but I've read many posts here).
For a 3.2 megapixel camera it is good but seems average, competing with other phones that have more megapixels.
The Flash is a LED light and as all LED lights it fails to be a proper flash. It helps a tiny bit to give some light in dark areas.
Average, some people complain it is too quiet while others are okay with it.
The sound quality is quite good from the 3.5mm jack. If you have cheap earbuds it will sound bad. With better equipment you will always have better results. That's the case for all audio devices.
Battery life is excellent considering other phones. This is a major plus for the xperia.
For scrolling it is good, though some members are annoyed if used for directions (instead of the standard direction pad) because they find its behaviour erratic. You can calibrate it for your needs, with the sensitivity options or disable it completely.
Average. Some panels are quite good, others are just gimmicks. The transition from portrait to landscape seems a bit laggy. Other than that it seems to work okay. Unfortunately panels don't run in parallel, so when you change from the Radio panel to another FM-Radio stops.
The phone is pretty good although some people question its high price. The craftsmanship is among the best. My opinion is that it is the best WinMo phone right now. When it matures it will definitely pay off its value.
Do you want a large screen (same resolution) or a hardware keyboard? If you need keyboard go for X1 if not go for HD.

I think the camera is quite good compared to my other phones. I never took a pic with the touch pro so i can't tell u if that was good or bad. The video quality is pretty decent too.

Never used the flashlight to take a pic but i would its just like any other. Pretty awful.

Speaker is way too low for me and the fact that the speakers are right by where u would hold the phone so ur covering the speaker when ur using it.

I'm watching a movie on it right now and the sound is pretty good i guess. I'm no expert but i also have no complaints.

MY GOD!!! The battery is the sickest thing i've ever seen. I had WIFI, bluetooth (which keeps cutting off), screen on max brightness, Running TFL3D and streaming video and i got 4-5hrs out of the battery.

I like the scroll pad its a nice work around for having no directional pads on the keypad.

I like the panels too. They aren't as slow as i thought they would be and its good to be able to just change ur today screen. Having TFL3D as a panel is what made it the greatest for me.

That is a personal decision. If u don't mind not having a keyboard then go touch hd otherwise i would go xperia x1 i personally wouldn't even have the touch pro in the ranking.

I do know your rep so I'll chime in..
Camera is about the best I've seen on a htc device, but that doesn't say much it's okay within obvious limits, video is pretty good..
flash is htc LED flash, say no more.
speaker is tinny and weak, as expected, single tiny speaker that you can cover with your hand far too easily, this has good and bad points.
Earpiece during calls is superb, plenty loud and people sound very clear with wonderful deep roundness to it. I described it to someone yesterday as like listening to BBC Radio 4! I also get comments from people telling me how clear and loud I sound, my Dad keeps phoning me 'cos he can actually hear what I'm saying for a change.
headphone sound through included headset is superb, rich full lows and really zippy high, and that's without the audiobooster. it looks like the vodafone tweaks have boosted the lows and reduced the highs a bit.
Battery life is good after first couple of days (of playing far too much). SE appear to have done some work on tweaking this, especially standby. I left mine on without using it last night, it lost 10% in 10 hours
poor connection (constant searching), UMTS bowsing and WiFI kill it though lost about 40% in 3 hours.
I've grown to love the optical touchpad, at first I hated it, and set the sensitivity all the way down, but with use I've set the sensitivity really high and use it instead of the D-pad keys most of the time.
Panels I find are boring very quickly, the card effect is good to show off down the pub. Pretty gimmicky overall, works very well to impress p*ssheads though! TF3d works very well, for me at least and is better..
Maybe I'll install the SDK and see what you can actually do with them, potentially it looks like you could use them as a container for running today dlls I think.
Overall phone is best WM device I've tried, I was a bit cautious coming from the Athena, but I've even got used to the small size (for me at least it feels small) but that's cos the last two phones were Uni and then athena.. And I've got huge hands, so it disappears, there's once or twice I've left the house and gone back to find the phone as it's so much smaller than those two you don't notice it's there, to realise that I've got it in my pocket all along! (a bit embarrassing as I've got music playing)..
I did contemplate selling it and getting a HD, but I've really grown fond of this, if I was offered a direct swap I'd be tempted but I'm very very happy.
FM radio is okay, don't tend to listen to radio much, but it picks up all the local and national channels here.
Main drawback is that it's probably the most mainstream WM phone there's ever been, I think that's a good thing, but it does mean we've got loads of new users in here that don't really understand what XDA_Developer is about and think people are here to tell them how to use their new pocket power ;D
:edit: one more thing, and something I noticed the first time I turned it on, the Wifi is the best I've ever used. I was picking up a signal from my router at the end of the drive, that's better than my laptops Sparklan a/b/g/n
I'm getting about 3 times more routers picked up travelling through built up areas than I ever did with the athena.

Touch HD Speaker quality?

Havn't seen any threads around here about the quality of the loudspeaker, like for mp3 ringtones and such.
I have an XDA2i and the sound is tiny, with no real range, but it does get loud enough to hear ok. I'm wondering, could anyone with an HD post a quick paragraph about how the sound is over loudspeaker.
Also, i understand there is a system equalizer. does this effect the loud speaker or only music over headphones?

Considering it's a tiny speaker it's not bad. No complaints.
There is an EQ program called 'Audio Booster' which is also integrated with the TF3D music player, this does only work with headphones.

yes I agree, it really is awful.
The speaker in it is worse than listening to a single mini headphone placed in the middle of a table. Terrible! Considering the price, a decent speaker would have been nice . .
as would a flash for the camera
as would GPS that didnt take 5 minutes
as would the ability to play movies without them stuttering
as would the ability to view flash content in web pages
as would the ability to store stuff on decent internal storage
I know all the arguments for the above, size, weight, battery . . . but you have to remember what we all paid for this device. We paid a HECK of a lot of money.

the trinity was worse - I don't mind the sound quality which is just lacking basses but is not crackling...

mmm that's good. on full volume songs on the 2i were cracky. i didn't expect any bass really.

Philo, I do take your point honest I do, but my point is that we are paying between €600 and €700 for this puppy. That's like buying a Rolls Royce. You expect everything to be perfect and of excellent quality. Is that not a fair expectation for that amount of money?

Yer I guess that's true
Personally I would use the multimedia features of the phone on the move with headphones so don't really consider this a particularly important feature of the device.

no complaints, i think the speaker is very good, much better than the diamond!

No sir, you're not being fair. First of all, the device is not expensive, if we're to be honest about it. My uncle paidmore than usd 10,000 for a car battery size phone years back. My first brick sized phone cost close to usd 2000. Now you have phone/gps/mp3/camera/video recorder/video player/computer/radio for a mere fraction when inflation should have pushed it to usd 70,000, but we're paying 100th of that.
Next, if you're expecting a perfect quality sound, buy an FM broadcast device and play your music over your car speaker, or wire it to your home HIFI system (which I often do), or buy a good quality headset and listen to your music in that way. The speaker on the phone is mainly for the ringtone. If it is loud enough to alert you, that's mostly enough. Don't expect AC3, or 5.1 sound coming out of that because one should never try to enjoy good music from this tiny little speaker.

As long as it plays the ringtones loud enough for me to hear them - i'm happy.

These comparisons are hard for some of us. The Touch HD has attracted many new users to WinMo.
How does it compare to Nokia phones such as the N95, N95 8GB etc.

Ha ha.. I don't blame you. Most of you may not be born yet when the battery size phone first emerged..
The electronic manufacturing industry is a tough and competitive one. The speed of a product becoming obsolete is frightening. A design flaw and pricing error can cause seriuos problem. The production line have to be changed all the time for new models. I have listened to a speech by the owner/ceo of the company which manufactures iPhone and have lots of respect for the continuous drives for efficiency, technology vision, and good judgement.
A sofa, table, and furniture can still sell 10 years 20 years later if there is no demand now. But an 2 MP camera that does not sell within a certain time frame is a junk that nobody wants. So, they cannot afford to charge too much and to overprice.
Sorry a little off topic. But just to make a point that HD is not really expensive. It is good value.

I agree with that. The HD speaker is very good to alert me to incoming calls, and gives very good in-call volume. If I want to listen to quaity audio, I'l be putting in the headphones. The diamond has terrible volume in comparison. It's a bit of an issue, but not insurmountable. The HD, in my view, is more than fine.

I remember when pda's first were able to accomodate a sim card, and take calls. This was new fangled nonsense that I was completely unwilling to trust. I carried an iPaq and a seperate phone for a number of years. It wasn't until tytn that I felt that the phone ability of the combined smartphones was good enough to dispense with a dedicated phone.

actually the SE P900 was my first smartphone where I dispensed with my ipaq (which just became a dedicated satnav). Tytn was the first WM smartphone I trusted for phone calls.

Had high hopes for N1 but disappointed

Long time lurker here and I have migrated from Winmo back in the day to Symbian and then to HTC's N1. Have also tried many other deivces along the way but thought this could have been it!
Unfortunately, I have been spoiled by the Nokia 5800. The sound quality from this thing is superb both for music playback and for speakerphone and I use it for both these purposes a lot. I had read about the N1 sound quality but thought the other bells and whistles would make me forget about it, sadly not.
The N1 I am sure is a great device but for now I am back to the Nokia. Perhaps with a little more time and patience I would learn to love the operating system of Android 2.1 but the hardware limitations (speaker and camera in the main) have led me to place my 2 day old Nexus One on the market.
For anyone interested, it's in the marketplace HERE for £449.99.
I will keep a close eye on Android and with MWC just around the corner, perhaps I will be tempted back when the hardware is available to match the O/S!

That's $707.25... I can buy a new on and have it sent overnight for ~$600.
Not trying to troll or anything, just a tip if you plan on selling it to anybody in the US.

It may not be a rip off when you include the VAT he would have had to pay. We can get it cheaper here in the U.S. sure, but what is the total bill (including VAT) for someone in the U.K.?
IRT sound quality the speaker phone is utter crap but music is not bad if you have a decent set of headphones attached.

It sounds about right. My total came up about £441 after the VAT.
I agree re speaker sound but I'm saving up for QC 15 and I hope it will sound good enough not to buy an dedicated player.

I have been using my Nexus one since the day after it was announced. I also have an HD2, iPhone 3Gs and we just got a new Palm Pre Plus to play around with testing for our users. Overall, my favorite is the N1 for customization, but there is one thing with the N1 that keeps pulling me back to my jailbroke iPhone and that is they keyboard. The iPhone keyboard is just so much easier to use. The only reason I can understand why is that it has multitouch. I often miss letters while keying on the N1 and best I can tell its when I hit the next letter before I lift my other thumb off the previous one. So I can type so much quicker on the iPhone over the N1. Why can't the keyboard be multitouch on the N1?

Why use speaker phone, and the external speaker to listen to music anyway? Get a decent set of headphones and a BT ear peace and be done. The former were never intended to be used in such a way for longer than when you have nothing better available and need to set the phone down. Its like expecting your netbook to game like your desktop, you set your self up to be disappointed.

Try smart keyboard pro from the market

I will admit, the speaker on the N1 is not that great.

I agree with this so much, I honestly do not know what you were expecting from a mere cellphone - even though some may have superb sound playback, I honestly never have "high expectations" for the quality of the speaker. Honestly, I never knew people so extensively used the speakerphone on a device enough to actually make them completely regret the phone.
I also thought that having a 5 megapixel camera (with flash) would make the phone an awesome device to take pictures with, it seems to me you simply wanted to complain, then sell the device - and this seemed to be the correct place to do it. I know that I'm wrong, but thats my 2 cents on the matter..

I use my N1 for music all the time, and think it sounds great. In the dock over bluetooth to my computer's speakers it sounds great. With my QC2's plugged in it sounds like I'm in da club.
The speakerphone is a speakerphone...I don't expect 5.1 out of it. What's with people???
I hate the standard OSK, so I installed the HTC-IME, and love it! Why do people quit so easily these days when we have SO many options?

The N1 I am sure is a great device but for now I am back to the Nokia. Perhaps with a little more time and patience I would learn to love the operating system of Android 2.1 but the hardware limitations (speaker and camera in the main) have led me to place my 2 day old Nexus One on the market.
For anyone interested, it's in the marketplace HERE for £449.99.
I will keep a close eye on Android and with MWC just around the corner, perhaps I will be tempted back when the hardware is available to match the O/S!

He's right in that the phone's speaker does leave something to be desired--Nokia phones generally have higher-equality speakers, what with them taking their "music phones" awfully seriously (I came to the N1 from the 5730 Xpressmusic: ****ty phone in every way but playback quality). It's a shame their devices aren't good for much else. Well, except durability. Those little buggers can withstand a lot of abuse.

I find it amazing that just because of the speaker he's prepared to loose all the other fantastic benefits of this amazing device... but still, different people, different priorities I guess. Myself I bought an £8 Veho360, very small and makes the music/podcasts sound like they're coming from a Hi Fi (Well, not quite... )
On the price, it is a bit cheeky he's trying to then make a profit. Mine cost £355 shipped and I may get a £60 VAT receipt soon. Having said that, there are peope on eBay asking £500 for it... I assume some idiots pay that.

Yeah, I wish my speaker was louder too (because I prefer to carry only one device to act as phone, tiny computer, media player and all) but it's far from a dealbreaker. Listening to music on it while out in public places is obnoxious, anyway, so I use the headphone.
Speaking of which, many people in countries other than the US/UK/Singapore/Hong Kong are quite willing to pay in the region of $600-800 for the phone. Makes me wish I'd ordered a few extra. Would've made a tidy profit.

I have to say this is way off the mark.
firstly the 5800 is rubbish. I had one and the earphone volume was ultra low until you pushed the case. Faulty connection in 90% of 5800's made. the OS is a nasty mess of s60v3 and touch. Sometimes you need single touch, sometimes you need double touch.
The contruction quality is poor, to be charitable.
You might be right about the sound quality, I gave my 5800 back within 2 days so never really tried it. but HTC devices normally have pretty good sound, perhaps a third party player with different codec might improve, or further roms might improve in the future.
On every other stat I wouldn't even bother to compare the 5800 to the N1

A bit unfair on the guy, I agree the speaker is silly bad, and why? Nokia can and do put some nice speakers in some phones, 5800 and N95's come to mind as brilliant, and some stinkers a bad as the N1, like the E72, N97, N97 mini.
Even the iPhone speaker from flipping 3 years ago sounds quite nice when you have no choice but to use it instead of headphones.

...Having bluetooth work like it should! I just came from a Mytouch 3G after a year to the Vibrant. The BT on the MT3G was utter garbage! I listen to podcasts all day while at work with my A2DP bluetooth and I couldn't set the phone down on my desk and walk 10 feet across the office without it choking, hiccuping or dropping my connection. At first I thought it was the earpiece so I returned the Jawbone Icon and bought the Blue Ant T-1. Same damn problem! I would walk with the phone in my hand and with every swing of my arm the sound would cut out. I practically had to hold the phone in the hand closest to the earpiece! My 5 year old Moto flip phone had better BT performance than the MT3G did. So once I got the Vibrant the first thing I did was try out the BT performance. Man, what a relief! They put a good radio in there! Now I can leave my phone in one room of the house, go downstairs and not have a single dropped connection or sound hiccup while playing audio.

The Bluetooth is utterly broken on my devices. It sucks in my car (5+ phone NEVER an issue). Glad yours is working, I am hoping moving to Froyo moving spec to 3.0 will resolve this. Bluetooth is my only complaint about the Vibrant.

While one rejoices, the other complains. Seriously I am starting to think Samsung customized each individual phone for purchase. At least that is what it seems like on these forums with all the conflicting reports.

i came from a moto cliq, and the bluetooth was worse then your mt3g. with the cliq the bluetooth would never stay connected. i always had to repair the headset with the phone every time i wanted to use it. now i can actually say that the bluetooth on the vibrant is so much better and it actually works

I use napster, bluetoothed to my truck stereo most all of the time. I never drop audio, and I am sure signal drops to 1 bar in places.

For me that best thing is the Super AMOLED screen, many other phones had me thinking of selling vibrant but at the end is the screen I just can't give up. It's like once you see it you will never go back to any other crabs. The best screen ever.

Coming from a Touch Pro 2 and an iPhone 3G I like the speed of the Vibrant, the display and am happy with the availability of apps for it. Rooted with the Mobile AP app installed is the frosting on my tasty cake!
I can live with GPS glitches (it's not perfect but it does get me from place to place), shorter battery life etc... The Vibrant isn't perfect but it does what I need it to do without complaining that I'm asking too much from it most of the time

[Q] Use fascinate w/o service as iPod Touch or sell? Case, ROMs, etc.?

I just upgraded to the Trophy and switched to WP7. Love it and not looking back. I miss the slightly bigger screen, a few free apps and google maps/directions, but other than that, WP7 is a winner for me.
Now, what should I do with my fascinate? Is it worth keeping as something like an iPod Touch? Or should I sell it off and just buy a dedicated camera plus mp3 player for that purpose? I'm assuming I could get at least $200 for this, which would get me a nice Rockbox player. I would get an iPod touch, but I'm very allergic to iTunes.
I'd like to use the fascinate (or something else) as an MP3 player and exercise tracker for the gym, offline map use with google maps and HTPC remote control. However, I'm worried because the battery life is utter crap. Is it still that way w/ the cellular radio turned off?
Now assuming I keep it and don't sell it there are some other questions. Which ROM would be best for my purposes? Assume all I need to do is underclock and Voodoo. Still Comm ROM?
Also, having trouble finding accessories. Is there a gym-appropriate case that works well for the gym? Something like a silicone bumper with armband, legband or beltclip/holster? Double duty for around the house would help.
Appreciate your opinions.

I'm keeping mine and using it like an iPod when the GS2 comes to VZ. With voodoo sound, the audio output of the Fascinate is incredible to say the least. The GS2 apparently isn't near as good with audio, and I know sound quality is pretty crappy from iPods.

Why use it as an ipod if your windows phone is also a great mp3 player? why carrying two devices when one can do all?

Primary phone + gym = don't wanna go there. I love that WP7 has an FM radio and great music, but I view most things I take to the gym as likely to die/disappear/destruct (for historical reasons). Also using phone as a music player for an hour workout guarantees battery failure at a needed point - been there / done that. I like to keep it separate for many reasons. That said, if I get a good enough case, maybe I'll try it.
Additionally WP7 doesn't scobble or support replaygain. I like both. Crossing my fingers that someday the APIs will allow Foobar2000 (or an equivalent) to run on WP7.
I don't like iTunes. Will never get an iPod touch for that reason. If they cut the cord, fine, but if I have to use iTunes that's a dealbreaker. I evaluate a lot of tech and it pains me whenever I have to check something on an iPad because that means installing iTunes.

Com rom would be great...i get over a day and a half with split time on 3g and wifi, listening to music with power amp for about 4 hours at work, and texting on and . voodoo sound is in kernels, but both that are included withCom rom have it

You can use Winamp and various other apps to manage music on iDevices. Personally, my old iPod Touch easily gets 20 hours of continous music playback (that's likely on the conservative side! I frequently forget to pause my ipod at night, so it'll end up playing ~10 hours, and do that several nights in a row without charging!), while my Fascinate would probably get no where near that amount... Music playback seems to use a shockingly large amount of battery for some odd reason. Either should be more than fine for a couple days worth of work outs without charging, though. There's also definitely going to be every accessory under the sun for the iPod, while the Fascinate will have a tiny handful of accessories (most of which will probably be some generic 'universal' one that doesn't fit quite right and is of questionable build quality).
Also, people keep saying how "great" the sound is from the Fascinate... I doubt with headphones you'll be using at the gym that the claimed difference would matter. When using any reasonably priced headphones, you won't be telling the difference! That's also assuming the audio files you have are of high enough quality to tell as well...
If you're sticking with the Fascinate, I'd recommend sticking with whatever ROM you currently are on until CM7 supports all the hardware you want to use. I'm personally waiting for a fully funcional CM7 before upgrading from SC 2.9.2.
Edit: If your phone is running any ComRom/UKB, you already have Voodoo Sound. Voodoo Sound has been supported in Froyo almost since we started using the kernel source for the Mesmerize back on some version of Super Clean.

+1. For messing with my iPod Touch files, I use CopyTrans Manager, which is free, it is decent and very reliable.

Heh, without the celluar radios on, android devices have a crazy amount of battery life. Using my hero as an mp3 player it would go 2 days before needing a charge with lite use. No reason the fascinate would be much different especially being used as a mp3 player seeing one of the biggest power draws is the screen it's self. I'd just keep it and continue use, you pretty much have a Galaxy S player.

Depending on how much you use the screen you could probably get around 2-4 days use out of it. Cm7 has a feature where you can hold the volume key up or down to skip a song or play the previous one while the screen is off so theres some potential battery savings there if you make good playlists. If audio quality is important to you, this phone + voodoo sound + a decent pair of headphones will provide a top notch experience.

Just for a better reference point for an older iPod Touch's battery life (the newer ones are better), I last charged mine 3 days ago, and have used it the last two nights for somewhere on the order of 10-12 hours each night, totally somewhere from 20-24 hours... and I currently have more than half my battery left. I'll get at least another 2 nights of similar usage before it gets into the red, so I'd figure somewhere around 40-50 hours of playtime.

are you guys using a dock out something or the internal speaker? I know with my daughters nano (5thgen) a long as its not powering it own speaker it last forever lol but its a lot smaller battery too

If you have one of the custom kernels (PBJ, OTB), just download Voodoo Control (free) from the Market.

Regarding battery life, I went out of the country last year, and had to keep my phone in airplane mode to avoid roaming fees. I basically just used it as an alarm clock (no music, etc). After seven days, I still had about 70% battery left. I really wish I had taken a screen shot so people won't say I'm lying. This was on bloated stock rom, btw.
And I agree with your hate of iTunes. The iPod Touch is an amazing piece of hardware, but being tied to iTunes is also a deal breaker for me. Maybe you could jail break it and not have to rely on iTunes?

I use earbud-style headphones. Those present absolutely no difficulties with sleeping I prefer earbuds since they're far more portable than any other style (just shove them in my pocket and go!).

That's not really surprising, the phone should be using virtually zero power in that case. Nothing should be waking it up until the internal timer wakes the kernel, that'll then trigger the alarm, pretty much.

You don't need to jailbreak it to use something else. I mentioned Winamp earlier in the thread, and someone else mentioned another program. There's quite a few that can be used to sync your music, including multiple programs on Linux/OS X as well. Hating iTunes isn't really a good enough reason

I should have said that the requirement to use any program to sync my device is a deal breaker for me. I thought maybe jail breaking would allow a drag and drop (like our phones)
But if it isn't for the OP, I think Media Monkey will also sync an iPod

I personally kinda like iTunes as a music player and the syncing isn't that horrible... but anyway enough about that.
If I was against getting an iPod then I'd keep the Fascinate as an MP3 player. You get to use it not only to play music but you get the added benefit of Google syncing (personally I can't live without calendar, Gmail) and the entire Android Market. Using Voodoo will get you a faster filesystem and awesome sound, and with the appropriate kernel you can configure it for battery life. Without the radio and using wi-fi sparingly you can get some amazing battery life. And don't forget it's got that awesome screen.
If you don't need a camcorder and don't mind limited BT, then CM6 is pretty stable and will be the cleanest and smoothest ROM (MMS is broken too but that won't matter since you don't have service on it). There should be some voodoo kernels for it floating around somewhere in the Development forum.
