Hi guys!
I had (well stiill have it somewhere) an old HTC wizard and i loved it, XDAdevs helped me a lot with it but well, i needed and upgrade so I bought a Nokia 5800XM. Im happy with it, but now I have the opportunity to change it for an HTC dream, and Id really like to go back to HTC and I dont like symbian very much, Id like to give droid a try.
Yes, I did use the search, i thought there would be some thread like this (since they are similar devices and were released very close) but I couldnt find any.
So, I did comparisons between their specs, and for what i see, the main differences are, dream has qwerty keyboard (big plus, i dont like touch keyboards), capacitive screen (so i guess it means multitouch, vs 5800s resistive), 500something mhz and 192mb ram (5800= 128 ram 400something processor, not big difference but it is something) and hmmm, dont know i got lost.
The 5800 is a bit smaller, has a better screen (360x640 16M, vs Dreams 320x480 65K), FM radio, 3.5 jack (i dont know what kind of plug the dream uses, i would like to know please), TV out, more battery time, better camera (carl zeiss, flash (i use it as a flashlight and works really good), and secondary camera for videocall).. and i think thats it.
Now, you guys, as users, what would you recommend? well if im asking here i guess most of you would go for the dream, but please, tell me ANYTHING, EVERYTHING i should know before making the swap..
is accelerometer good? is GPS good? (my 5800 works fine, but it takes 10 minutes to find satellites so it makes it kind of useless for short trips through the city, it might be because im in Argentina tho)
what about music/video playback? build quality?
If you think i forgot something, or that there is anything i should know before going through with the swap, please let me know! also when im doing the exchange if i decide to go through with it, what should i check is ok and test so i dont get scammed with a broken device?
Sorry if its too long, hope you read it, and that you would help me! Im counting on you guys
Thanks!
You can have the most advanced hardware in the world, but with crap software, it is still junk. Dream is BY FAR the superior.

Capacitive does NOT mean "multitouch". It means it has a HARD surface designed for use with your fingers. Resistive is a SOFT surface requiring (for proper use) a stylus.

There is no fm radio, the 3.5 headphone jack is available if you buy a converter from HTC's weird almost-USB plug, there is no tv out (can't think of a single reason you'd want this....), all phone cameras suck -- **ALL**.

The GPS is good... if you do NOT have a DATA NETWORK CONNECTION, it can take a while to connect. WITH a data network connection, you get assisted GPS and very fast locks.

Make sure it turns on and boots up. If it gets stuck rather than booting up, then it could have been bricked. Some people will do stupid things, like installing 1.33.2005 SPL and end up with a non-functional device.

but with a capacitive multitouch can be achieved by software, whilst imposible with a resistive.. or well thats my guessing Dream is multitouch right?

yeah i already have those converters in my wishlist, but i think that it will come with one. TV out is not of great use thats true, but it is a cool feature to display pictures and videos taken with the device, and also you can watch a movie or something (not the best quality but can be handy at times).
Yeah, all phone cameras suck, but I like to capture the moment and upload it on facebook to share with friends, and even if the quality is not the best, you can at least distinguish whats happening in the picture, even in clubs at night. also the app to use the flash leds as a flashlight is really usefull, but well i guess i could use a white screen app for that.

Incorrect on all accounts.
Dream is NOT multitouch -- not really, except with some nutty hacks that *kinda* work.
And your idea about multitouch being impossible with resistive... well my ASUS T91MT tablet/netbook would disagree with you. It has a resistive multitouch panel.

Highly unlikely that it will "come with" one. They did NOT ship with those converters from the factory, and not many people bother with them.... you know, with wired headsets being totally obsolete in favor of bluetooth.

The camera works not too bad all things considered. I caught some pictures of a fox snooping around my house a few months ago, turned out nice, but taken outdoors in daylight. LED flashes don't work well -- they just don't give you the same kind of output that a proper flash will, so trying to use it in a dark and psychedelic place won't be yielding very good of results.

Just turning the display ON in a pinch works OK. I wired up a circuit breaker panel that way once.... however, if you want a flashlight, you should probably buy a flashlight.

Just some words upon the topic: HTC Dream last official firmware is Android 1.6 Donut - it has no multitouch feature. But you can quite easily install Android 2.2 Froyo (CyanogenMOD e.g.) - it has such functionality. As the example, i can say that while navigating through picture gallery you can zoom in and out the image with two fingers movement - and it really works...
GPS: it takes one or two minutes outdoors to catch the satellites without AGPS.
Audioconverter HTC ExtUSB -> 3,5 audiojack costs $5 at ebay.com (item id 335ea04db3 e.g., sorry, no link due to new users policy of xda forum).

thanks for replying, i already have my dream!
if a "normal" person asked me what i would recommend, i would suggest they get the 5800.
me? im happy with my g1, i just need to find the right rom for me and also a high capacity non-extended battery. im getting one of those adapters this weekend
Hi jinxie
Have you got your new battery? seems like the 1700mAh battery is the largest that conforms to the original form factor.
For myself, I'm thinking of going with a remote that has a 3.5mm headphone port, probably HTC RC E100, instead of one of those multi port USB adapters.
I'm curious to know which ROM you went with?
hey!
i am just ordering the battery right now.. but intl delivery sucks big time for latin america.. so I will tell you in a month lol
about the adapter, i wanted it because the guy who i made the trade with forgot to give me the headphones that come with the device, but now i have them, and i must say im impressed, despite the looks they fit really well (and thats an issue for me, headphones often fall from my ears, but not these), and sound quality is great, even music with heavy bass sounds good, so i think im gonna stick with these for a while..
and about the rom, im open to suggestions, havent found what im looking for yet, CM6 didnt work for me, im currently using biffmod but not happy with it neither, i wanted to try superF, but im not sure if all the issues it had are fixed yet, also i was waiting for the OTA release, so there must be some new stuff now, but actually what i was really looking for was an equivalent for the dream of the milestone's eclairless, i want the most RAM available i can get without the hack (im rethinking that), im really sick of FCs.
i might flash something today as i came to XDA today to look for a ROM, hope i find sth interesting.. what are you using?
I broke my last dream going from CM6.0.0 to biff's. I did manage to get another second hand dream, in good condition, of craig's list and i'm going to chill on rooting for now.
So, did you order a battery that requires a special back cover? For myself, I ordered the 1700mAh battery, just because I really like my case and I wouldn't be able to use my case with one of the super sized batteries that change the form factor.
I really miss having the music controls on the lockscreen and I can't seem to get that feature,at least for free, on cupcake with the stock music app, so I ordered a remote with headphones because, the stock HTC headphones, though sound awesome but are too big for my ears, and keep falling out. With this remote, since it has a 3.5mm jack, I should be able to use my favorite earbuds from sony, that is if I don't like the ones that come with my order.
I attached a picture of the remote / headphones
The most annoying thing I'm finding, is only having sixty megs or so, for apps, and not being able to remove the stock stuff included that I don't use, like Quickoffice, and such.
yeah i saw that remote, looks cool, but i heard that it might not work depending on the rom youre using.. or sth like that, look it up here in the accesories forum..
how did you "break" it? didnt you just brick it? im sure theres some way to recover it.. but tell me how you did it because i dont want to do the same.
still havent flashed anything new yet, since with the low bat life i get im not using the phone that much, but i might try the new cyanogen 6.1.. but im not sure yet..
btw yes i also ordered the 1700mah, the pohne is big and heavy as it is, with an extended battery i might aswell buy a netbook :/
chences are that you will get your bat way before i get mine, so tell me how much more juice you get from it!
edit: so finally today i flashed chromatic 3.9.1.1 (eclair)
so far so good, very fast, i changed adw launcher for launcher pro, now i want to remove all the extra stuff i dont need/use. then lets see how it goes with all my apps loaded, lets give it a few days
here's my post from the CM forum: regarding my broken Dream. I believe there is a JTAG solution, but I figured just get another used for cheap instead of taking the nonbooting dream apart, buying the necessary equipment, learning how to fix it, or getting someone else to, etc. now I'm using it as an extra charger.
The remote I order wasn't the one I really wanted, but it's coming with the earbuds I prefer, instead of the stock ones that are way too big for my ears.
If I still have this phone, I might get one of the 2850mAh batteries just to see if I can get a full days use on a single charge. But I'm thinking of getting a HTC Desire Z from bell off contract, and using it with rogers.

I would like to start a thread about the things that are annoying, don't work right, or were not designed optimally.
I realize that this device is incredible and that no device will be perfect for all.
I don't have mine yet, but for those who do, please share your thoughts....
Thanks.
Well, normal phone usage is not possible right now. Its handsfree or nothing.
It would have been nice if they made something, like a modified stylus or what, with a mini cord (usb?), wich you can hold on your ear so that it would be possible to use it like a normal phone.
At least they could have made a extra earphone loudspeaker on the other side of the mic.
But as you suggest its a little minus on a nearly perfect device

Graphic. I really can't understand why is much cheaper PSP able to play any video in better quality than Ameo which is much more expensive (10 times more expensive Ameo)? I know it is just device for bussines but at least they could put some better graphic chip for Ameo or do something to play normal video.

I just bought my Dopod U1000 not even 5 hours ago. My first impression seemed to be deteriorated at least by these following drawbacks
1. It can't really be used like any other normal phones: HTC should have known that ppl with need for this kind of gadget expect "all in one" functionality of the device so that they wouldn't have to carry many pieces of jigsaws to make just a simple call. I can't imagine how I could make calls during the day after my headset's battery dies.
2. Since the screen is huge, they should have included some software that allows icon size downward adjustment.
3. No vibration: I guess I gotta keep peeping at the device every time during my meeting
4. WM5: My addict to Crossbow has caused me some pain, even temporarily

Do you have an Ameo yet schoofter? If so, try a DVD-Rip....the quality on the Ameo is short of High definition on my screen...but certainly DVD quality at worst.
I was just commenting earlier today how great this device really is. It's an all rounder, but I agree that it would have been closer to my dream device if they had substituted the ATI chip for the Nvidia 5500 GPU.

Let us know how you get on. I for one am holding off on buying an Advantage until I find a solution like this that works well. Some of the reviews I've seen seem to indicate the device has a problem staying paired.
Looking forward to your update
Well. my LG Style-i arrived to day, and I'm well pleased with it.
It is simple to pair, and simple to use. It's smaller than I expected, and pretty cool looking - it has the 'what the hell is that' factor, closely followed by 'and what the hell is that' when I pull out the Ameo.
Voice command works perfectly through it, the sound quality is excellent, and on full volume it's very loud, easily loud enough to use in a noisy pub.
I've (hopefully) attached a couple of pics so you can see the size against the Ameo.
It cost a total of £44 including shipping from the US, but hey, I would only have spent it on beer.....

Not seen that mentioned anywhere, and I've not experienced that in the 9 days or so I've been using the Ameo - unless you are referring to the handset, and that has stayed paired all day without problems.
Trinity is a fine device as far as a Pocket PC based on a Shaky MS Windows OS can be. You cannot criticize it so much on speed or most of the function it carries (After all, it is not a Laptop). But there are some serious flaws with it which one cannot ignore, I paid £360=$750 for mine which makes it quite an expensive PPC, therefore making these flaws worse than usual:
1- BLUE for BLUETOOTH
Considering the fact that one of its main usages is for listening to music and that it would be nice to be able to use a BT Headset to do that, the fact that the crappy BT on Trinity is very unreliable and does not work in many instances, would be a great disadvantage on this. I bought a Sony DR-BT10CX Bluetooth Stereo Headset for £30 and I was very disappointed to see that it is not working (Works as a Hands-Free But not a Wireless Headset). Since I managed to somehow make it work twice (though I have gone through the steps for 3 days now to no avail), I would conclude that this is not the BT Headset's Fault (So, I cannot return it), nor the Trinity's Hardware is faulty, but a stupid Software Glitch. By The Way – I would appreciate it if anyone can suggest a solution
2- PAIN of PAINT
The mere fact that over 90% of the people say that the pain is Peeling Off, is just painful. What kind of a stupid flaw is that? A device so sophisticated and complicated and they manage to mess it up over a simple painting process.
Also, I have tried to use Skype, but as soon as I try to call someone, it just shuts down the Skype. I believe that I am not the first person to have had such a problem. However, software conflicts are unfortunately quite normal when it comes to PPCs. I can live with that. But the PAINT & BLUETOOTH just bug me so much.
Anyway, when you pay a heck-load of money for something, you expect better in the basics. I just hope HTC solves these in the near future. For starters, I would say, work the damn BT problem, then even if you are going to use the stupid unreliable plastic casing, just do a better job with the painting. It is not rocket-science.
hi there, I don't know that much about the bluetooth problems, but I can confirm that I didn't get my hama-blurtooth dongle to do a sync via BT with my trinity either. But the usb-ActiveSync works fine (if I shut down the firewall for a while...) and is faster anyway!
concerning skype: what version did you try? the latest 2.2 for windows mobile didn't work on my device either. But the skype for mobile 2.1 version runs fine incl. telephone function. The video-call won't work on the trinity anyway - too much resources needed by skype at this time... but chatting or talking is fine, too.
PS: I have a vodafone vpa compact gps with the standard WM5 rom still on it. Didn't need the WM6 yet..
Cheers, S.

It's quite well known that BT headphones especially those stereo ones are quite picky on the phone combinations. I heard that even on nokia and se compatibility is still a problem. Not to mention that crappy MS BT stack on almost *ALL* HTC WM5/6 phones. Try do some research before buying - there's no direct indication that an expensive headset would automagically work on your trinity, and vice versa.

Skype for Samsung CPU is still in beta. That means it may or may not work. I don't think Trinity users are alone on this one. Probably you should complain to Skype instead.

I had a similar issue with the toshiba bluetooth built into my laptop. I needed to change a key in the laptop registry and then instead of serial port, the phone saw it as activesync on the bluetooth settings.
Then it worked for activesync.

Of course you will have to use wired headphones driving car, because of the crippled Bluetooth in the iPhone. You can only play games, that Steve allows you to play. You want to receive MMS... no chance. Record a video ... forget about it.
Technology-Wise its an outdated gadget... but the design and the gui are smart....
you guys REALLY think iphone is an alternative?????
- you can't use memory cards
- you can't change the battery (jesus christ)
- only apple (will) make software
- GPS ... hahah
- no available software at all
- and many other things... i wonder if you can just upload an mp3 and play it, maybe you have to use itunes to buy it. I indeed wonder if you can upload "anything" into the phone
iphone is a cute expensive phone, nothing more than that. maybe 10 years ago i would be impressed. not now.

iPhone is well iPhone. I do agree on the flaws. But its just a simple phone that gets to the point. Same goes for MacOS X , a simple system that just works. Common , we all admit that if you install 50000 tons of software inside your PPC , it makes it unstable etc....But I still can't understand why people still love to skin their PPCs to be an iPhone Clone. I still dont understand that part
PPC is well PPC Phone and iPhone is well iPhones. PPC is out there for soo many years and iPhone is new to the market. I am not against PPC nor defending Apple
I would just like to point that out
I loved the Trinity and I wish I still had it.
I beat the hell out of that phone and not a speck of paint ever came off mine.
I am thinking of getting the P3600i or the Polaris, thats how much I miss it.
Can't believe people would cry over the paint peeling THAT much... It's just right at the bottom right? Somewhere that can't be seen like 99% of the time... (it's like crying over a pimple where the sun don't shine )
I don't know what's wrong with the bluetooth, but using the SE HBH-DS970, I really can't see what the problem is? I admit it does require abit of tweaking to get the sound to go perfect, but that's a matter of minutes, once off.
To compare the device with iPhone or even an iPod (wtf?!) is... simply an insult... (for the reasons listed by above posters)

Not complaining about my Trinity, it is doing all i require of it, but the paint peeling off is not just restricted to one part, its all of the anodised bit. i am loosing balck across the bottom and up both sides, near the buttons. Lay mine on the desk and the bottom edge looks decidedly scruffy and that's on a device thats less than four months old. Given its retail value it really should last longer before looking scruffy around the edges.
Don't compare a locked hypy Iphone to a customizable and complete PPC
I agree that comparing Trinity to the Hype-crap Iphone is an insult.
The Iphone lacks some essential functions as listed by above posters.
It's good looking, it's hypy, it's user-friendly, OK, but in terms of functionalities, and compatibility with softs, games etc. it's an old out-dated apple-locked phone.
Some one pointed out the fact that PPC users like to customize their device to make it look like an Iphone. Yep, so what?
Do you really think that means that those people dont want to enjoy their GPS, MMS, Video-recording, Tons of games and personalized softwares and tweaks anymore?
I don't think so, it's just that they think (like everybody) that the Iphone has a fresh-good-looking and hypy appearance... but unfortunately, only that.
So they take out what they like in it, and they can do so because, the PPC is easy to customize and modify ;-)
Do you know why Iphone users don't put a PPC like GPS, MMS service, video recording, all the games and softs they envy us on their device?
Because... they just CAN'T do it until Papa-Job decides to allow them to.
To conclude, about the paint-peeling issue, I believe this is a disapointing point on the Trinity and I sympathize with people suffering from that, but...
It doesn't seem to be a problem on the WHITE devices, only the black ones as I've heard. At least my white one doesn't have such a problem.
And since Apple fan-boys love the white color, I really don't see what could make them prefer the Iphone, except fidelity and obediance...

Oh I see, I didn't understand it was that bad.... my top and sides aren't affected at all, it's only the bottom coz I keep putting it onto the cradle.
But I've only had my phone for about 3 months, no case no nothing.
It's alright, i can't imagine myself disliking the phone even if the paint's peeling like that.
the paint thing is plain stupid on a piece of kit like this. It starts as small specks falling off, now I'm in the same position as others- big chunks coming off all over the metal part. Looks very messy.
I'm tempted to peel the lot off so at least it's one colour (chrome).
I logged a call with Orange ages ago and no response.
This is the best device so far- all I can think is if you see those issues as showstoppers, you probably haven't worked out all you can do with it!
I don't want to send mine off for repair. Going a day without it would be hard, weeks impossible.

Money-wise?! You gotta be kiddin' me
I hate to see these threads disappear into iphone praising/bashing, but I'm going to join in.
WM is chronically flawed, and appears to be making zero progress in the right direction. I use it on my trinity, because thats the best solution for me, today.
The Trinity is a nice piece of hardware, appears well engineered and very well featured, WM6 is a dissapointment.
The iphone bashing revolves around a few points, video - I would be surprised if a soft update doesn't sort this in the next few months. MMS, yes it should be there, and will be in a few months. GPS, will be in the 2G model, the technology is still quite immature for mobile applications Apple will be looking for much quicker aquisitions, something not really cracked yet. Finally 3G, the reason its not there is beause it wouldn't fit. Apple designs products with the user in mind, not the technology. Probably 3 years ago they sketched out it should be this shape and work like this, today its possible as the current iphone.
Applications as treated on WM make sense in a desktop enviroment, they dont on a mobile phone. They should be web based apps executing in a protected enviroment a widget type interface will link them into the phone UI as needed. These apps should be about communication anyway not standlone installations.
I honestly find it remarkable the lack of vision as to where this technology is heading, and how its going to be taken to the masses. Think of a 'facebook' phone. The technology is going to start making its way towards the mainstream, its going to be traumatic for the networks as they awaken to the fact their role is simply to provide a gateway, their old fashioned revenue streams simply aren't feasible anymore, much as the landline telco's discovered a few years back. There will be a lot of wingeing from them.
WM died sometime ago, a few have failed to realise, I get the impression even Microsoft have worked this out.

About IPHONE... well yea... it's just a "simple $500 phone".
About MacOS I dont' agree about it being a simple OS. It is a really well built OS. I'm a windows user since Windows 2.0, I also work with Linux, FreeBSD and Solaris systems. Recently I bought a MacBook Pro to give it a try, as it is a well-built laptop. I have to say it really surprised me. The new MacOS is really a Unix system, a fancy linux. In fact, is a window manager over the FreeBSD unix. If you know Unix you can tweak the hell out of it. If you dont, well you can use MacOS as a dummy simple OS.

Dude, interesting post... Im working in the embedded market software (IPTV) for 6 years now, and I agree with some of your thoughts. About this one I quote, I dont neccessarily agree you need web-based apps, because of the overhead and memory footprint of a web platform. I think the best architecture is also split in two layers, I accept the widget-type interface, but with communication with a native, frontendless module.
Apple did not invent this. Multi layer applications are in use in Unix systems since X was born, circa 1980.
when dose the paint start peeling off? It think its a great little piece of kit
between iPhone and Trinity, I'll still pick trinity..I will only buy the iPhone when my iPod dies off and i'll use the iPhone as my iPod..My paint peels off at the bottom where the stylus is..suppose it could have been rubber or plastic there..but even so i don have much trouble with it..unstable WM is, it is still much much better than a N6280 which hangs more often than i can use it..anyway..with WM6..its much stable..I'll buy the trinity anytime!

I'm curious that what can Leo do? After a lot of video of it to show how it's great..where are the strengths and weaknesses of it? Is it a really smart phone?

care to explain what a smart function is
Yes what can it actually do?
HTC has blown us bigtime again.
It can´t do enything you expect it to do, exept looking really nice.
HTC cant expect us to always relly on XDA all the time.
This whole scenario reminds me of "the blackstone affair".
When I bought the blackstone I was convinced, after reading almost everything there were to read about it, it was the best phone ever made.
I was convinced this community would fix every flaw.
Everyboy just assumed the xda devs would fix things.
Ok, XDA have made blackstone better that it was at first, but its not the killerphone
I was expecting it to be.
Now after reading about Leo I get the same fealing.
I mean, were is the native multitouch support. I have read posts were people just assume xda will get that. It still have a GPS-lag. No USB-host, wich everyone seam to just say: XDA will get that. It wont! It is just too hard and to time consuming.
So what can Leo do, except look good?
For 700 euro I had expected a lot more!

I know and it makes med sad.
I have bean in this buying coma and just got woken up,
and realised I cant get everything in one phone, if I chose to buy a
HTC phone...
But how come a phone with killer hardware still havent got more to offer,
when both samsung and toshiba G01 has more things to make use of the
hardware?
So what can it do? What use do I have of Leos hardware?
I think this is a nice thread with a good topic.
then don't buy a Leo, simple huh?
Toshiba TG01 lags, care to explain me why? Yet it has the same processor as the HD2. So what is the use of the hardware there (same question)? Same thing on the samsung. Every phone has a fault or something that won't make everyone happen, that's just how it is.
No manufacturer will ever make a phone with everything in it, it's not just HTC that does this. It shouldn't make you sad either, you would do the same if you ran that company, otherwise would bring them about ruin
dont confuse HTC with windows, and iPhone with its respected OS..
HTC made this phone, made a monster, whether it does everything you want or not, its personal opinion, but HTC did make a phone, not the operating system, which is where we get to Windows Mobile, with that OS it depends on the people who make programs for each phone, but we have a ton of windows mobile devices, where each one should have its software designed for it. Now i agree with u, Windows Mobile didnt give us unlimited app's options, they left a big part of that in the hands of other programmers, which is why we are all here on XDA
The iPhone on the other hand, they made the 3 versions of the phone, with all the app's, and then released it, even tho around 90% of the apps are a joke that u install 1 time, play with it for 5 minutes and uninstall it, its still a huge amount of applications.
So you cant really ask if the HD2 can do what the iPhone does, it just takes time for the developers take that "everything i want" and put it into each program
edit: (and i really had to do this ): Dont ask what the Leo can do for you, ask what you can do for your Leo!

Oh, don't worry, it will be usefull.
Only problem will be could you use all of it's potentials... and find a way to do that...
Gaining post count
Well, seems to me new users badly need postcounts to get a free HSPL when the time comes.
Someone said, ..O dear... (that what spot on)
For the rest, if people really want 1 device that can do it all, buy
the HTC Shift.
This Hybrid OS device does everything from detecting Higgs particles to transdimensional teleportation, GSM calling and Windows 7 / Windows Mobile 6.1 with HDSPA and builtin stereo speakers and then some.
First impressions...
Ok, here some first user experience after half a day:
PRO's:
- The screen is HUGE!
- Flat device
- New TouchFlo + "multitouch" (only zooming), pressuresensitive
- Most applications and functions are fingerfriendly
- Fast(er than Topaz). See my new benchmark thread
- Led flash (not very good, but better than nothing)
- Much program memory 336 Mb
- Flat leather case, simpel but usefull I think
- 3,5 mm connection
- New micro-usb connection (is that a pro?)
CON's:
- The device is huge! To be honest I was a bit shocked when I first saw it. It's very "wide"...
- My first impression is that the screen is good but no better than the (small) Topaz screen
- Storage memory is low, only 183 Mb
- No stylus! At the moment a big issue for me. Not everything is fingerfriendly, so much frustration. Scrolling is hell! CERTAINLY AN ISSUE BECAUSE THE SCREEN DOESN'T RESPOND ON A STYLUS OR OTHER SHARP OBJECT!!! Hope I will get used to this soon.
- Camera sticks out. The camrea sticks out of the back of the device so the device rests on the silver edges of the camera. Not good for the silver, not good for the camera.
All in all it's impressive...!
Report later when I'm a bit more used to it.
(My Topaz screen look sooooo small now.....)
I completly agree with ETHANIAs first post.
There is also one BIG CON:
"Pretty much all videos under 720p played just fine without any dropped frames. The HTC HD2 has similar issues as Acer neoTouch and has even worse performance. While the neoTouch managed to play the 720p videos with 15-17 fps, the HD2 has an output of only 12-13 frames per second. Not that any of those is actually watchable but it gives you an idea. We guess the graphics subsystem of the Acer neoTouch has a few tricks under its sleeve and it's not a matter of pure CPU clock comparison."

I have TOUCH HD and i am dissapointed with it. Yes you are right, i really dont think to buy it (not yet ). I wish you luck with yours HD 2.
Any link for buying in Holland?
Any reasons not to? What is camera and build quality like?
Also, is there going to be any difference if I buy it from somewhere within UK instead of importing it - other than price?
Any issues I should be aware of - which is quite serious? Is there any reason why I would be better off buying another phone (I am currently using a faulty 8900, mic broken etc).
What would its battery life be compared to a 8900/9700? Is it going to be as bad as a HD2? I hope not!
I need to decide soon! I really need a phone without requiring to use a wired headphone with a mic on it rofl.
I noticed its $529 direct from google (while the cheapest Ebay is around $600+shipping. Google does allow unlocked shipping to UK - however it doesn't state the amount of delivery it charges - at least not prior to the page where it requests card information. It is probably cheapest to just buy it from google directly?
$30 shipping to UK
Battery life is good for a smart phone if you manage your settings carefully (using a program like Quick Settings is good to turn off power hungry things like bluetooth, GPS and wireless when you don't need it). Sorry don't have the experience to compare battery life with HD2 or 8900/9700.
Camera is pretty good. As good as you need in a phone I think. Build quality seems very good. Been fairly rough with mine, in pocket with no case and it still looks like new after two weeks.
Get one. It's an awesome phone.

I get about 24hrs ATM (still new so playing with it a fair bit). Saying that, I've been busy today so not a lot of use (few web pages, few texts, couple of calls) and still 71% after 12 hrs. If i continue this trend then theoretically, it will last about 48hrs (est. based on no use during sleep etc). Is that better than HD2? I dunno mate!

Well if I can tell you one thing is that, the N1 battery life is no where near the BB 8900 or 9700, if you think about it it, the N1 screen is way larger than BB and that alone I think takes a lot of batt power. And many google app use gps on N1, I think that's another factor of the lesser battery life comparing to BB.
Its a great phone. The frame of the phone is aluminum, and the back is rubberized plastic for comfort in your hand. Camera quality should be similar or slightly better than that of the HD2. The screen and processor are the main attraction of this phone, its super fast and videos look better than on any LCD display, you really have to see it in person to appreciate it. Highly reccommend.

Wrong. In France at least.
Few days ago was the official phone presentation, and it was said no multitouch neither Navigation...
I think asking this question here would be the same as asking if you should buy an iPhone on some iPhone forums.
I love this phone, I paid the full price and hooked to t-mobile, Just waiting for CM - 5.0 now.
Buy it. Buy it. Buy it. Buy it.
I think I may just go for this....
As for multi-touch, I heard some people were able to enable it - but how effective is it with the mod?
Also, what was with that talk about euro version coming with MT - as due to some patent issues, they couldn't do it in the US?
What import/tax am I likely to have to pay when it arrives on my doorstep? I think I am really close to pulling the trigger
I am guessing it will kick my 8900 in every way - gaming, GPS etc? Btw this has a car navigator built in right? IIRC at least anyway from a video.
Instead of modding your N1 for multi touch, it would be much easier to install the Dolphin Browser, which in my opinion is better than the stock browser anyways.
Although, if you want it in other applications such as Google Maps, or possible the gallery, then I would assume that it would be best to watch for Cyanogen - I believe he would be on of the first to enable it in native applications.
The Dolphin Browser's multi-touch capabilities are very, very, smooth on the N1. Just in case you're not educated about it. The modded version as of now, I hear, is choppy, unless Cyanogen has updated it recently.
Go for this awesome bad boy...you will not look back!
I bought the phone 5 mins ago. How should I check for bad screens which are prone to dust? As I heard a bit about this and don't want to be one of these victims!
Also, what is the best screen protector? Those 0.2mm things which you cover your phone with, wouldn't mind having a scratch free phone at all mind you - especially since I am quite obsessive about these things!
Congratz on your N1!
Read this for dust checking info: http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=613115
Also, go to the Accessories section for screen protectors info...
I rave a lot about this phone so I'll keep this short and relevant to your concern. The camera suffers from a known coloration issue that (I'm under the impression) should be resolved by a software fix or hardware replacement. Otherwise, it's an absolutely fantastic camera. As for overall build quality, it's about the best I've ever seen. It may not be the flashiest phone out of the gate (until you turn on the screen) but after a couple weeks, this thing could still pass as brand-spanking-new. The most important thing about the phone, though, is its incredible speed in every facet. It's like using high-speed internet for the first time.
The only thing that used to concern me about buying a N1 was thecustomer support on it&deciding if I should hold out for another couple months to see what else may be released....
(Now after seeing the htc supersonic I'm starting to have doubts again!)
Hello!
I'm still not sure about the tattoo, but since alot has with the development in the past months I thought I'd ask a couple of questions concerning your current satification kwith the HTC Tatttoo.
1. If you think about the issues that where real in the beginning (a big part of the market was closed for tattoo owners etc), how has these issues changed (perhaps many has disappeared now that you have root/custom roms?
2. Do you regret not buying a phone with a biger screen/higher resoluton? If so, which phone would you have bought instead for around 400 USD / 300 EUR.
3. For those who have tested a 2.1 rom on the Tattoo: Does 2.1 make the phone more responsive and less laggy (if you experienced lag before)? Does it solve any other issues that you had with the device?
4. How long are you planning to stick with the Tattoo before upgrading to another (android) phone?
5. What are your thoughts of the build quality of the device?
6. Would you recommend buying the htc Tattoo today concidering the price range stated in question #2?
Any other thoughts are also welcome=)
Thanx!
1. Still not great. I didn't realise the resolution of the device was going to limit it so much. Plus the camera doesn't have autofocus so barcode scanners dont work among other things.
2. I regret it, but its a free contract phone and im not paying £40 a month for an iphone.
3. not tested but may do soon!
4. Not impressed with android tbh...
5. Feels solid for the money. No complaints.
6. I personally wouldn't recommend it. Its a fun toy but a terrible phone. I think its far to slow. Hopefully this will change with future updates but I would stay away.

1. I've noticed that many apps became available later in the Market after devs added the QVGA tag for them. But it's still something greatly missed.
2. The smaller screen is a slight disadvantage which I was fully aware of when purchasing it, though the 7 home screens kinda make up for it.
3. I will test 2.1 in the weekend. Apparently it is much faster than 1.6.
4. Probably till the end of this year.
5. I'm pleased with the build quality. No issues there.
6. All I can say is weigh the pros and cons and decide for yourself. I bought this just to gain experience with Android.
Thanx alot for your input guys!
Sorry for the long questions, I thought I wouldn't get any answers because of that=)

I'd really like to hear about how you experienced 2.1, and I hope
that it will provide you with a richer experience!
Me and my brother are currently looking at both the HTC Tattoo and the samsung i5700 "spica". Both phones has issues though.
What worries me the most is that the Tattoo might be a bit laggy and that is why I have such hopes in 2.1.
The Tattoo also seems more sturdy than the spica and I'm almost certain that I will accidently drop it some time.
I also like the fact that you can change the cover.
Some follow up questions: For those who has tried phones with a wider color range(?) than Tattoos 65k, spica has ~16 million,
will I really notice that much difference? I saw that the Hero had 65k too and that phone was a huge sucess.
3. Some reviews state that the resolution makes some text look blurred, is this something you have experienced?
How is the screen quaity in general (considering color range is only 65k) and what about video playback?
It's a shame that you can't try the phones in the stores here.
I tried installing 2.1 today, but I got to the Tattoo screen during startup, and then went to a blank screen. Waited for about 10 mins. So recovered the phone, and installing other ROM's now.
PS: I'm in MOD-installing-mood this weekend!

Having used it for 4 months now, I'm able to write very long text messages in a very short time (even if I mainly twit ), and most of the time I disable the automatical corrector as I write both in Italian and in English. The very first days I was in a real pain, coming from a simple T9 Nokia, I felt the full-qwerty was really uncomfortable, but now everything is changed and I can't live without my full qwerty
So, I don't regret. Anyway, before buying the Tattoo I was taking some several looks at the Hero which should now cost around 300 EUR.

3. For those who have tested a 2.1 rom on the Tattoo: Does 2.1 make the phone more responsive and less laggy (if you experienced lag before)? Does it solve any other issues that you had with the device?

I've never experienced lag with Tattoo but I'm not a big fan of gaming. I mainly use it for music, Google Maps (man, this is amazing!! I was in holiday some days ago with my gf and we were looking for a damn archeological site which was not on our map and not on the road signals, after walking around for about 30 mins I fired up Google Maps, searched for "Archeological Site" and BANG! He got us there, amazing. AFAIK, no GPS software is capable of such a search tool!), Twitter, Wikipedia, YouTube and all of those stuff you can do online.
The only way to make the phone very laggy is to use the RadioFM along with the GPS, but it's not a "daily" thing you do I guess.
As for the 2.1 ROM it's amazing. Even if it has not Camera and some stuffs are buggy, it's a GREAT ROM, man it's faster than hell, amazing animations, rewritten Messagging and Google Talk apps which are GREAT, every contact has its own tab which is more than good-looking and.. it's great!

4. How long are you planning to stick with the Tattoo before upgrading to another (android) phone?

TBH, I'm already planning to change the phone but this has nothing to do with the Tattoo, it's only that I really love the Nexus One and I'm waiting for the summer as it should be available in Italy and I should have enough money But, really, nothing to do with Tattoo, it's perfect for me.

5. What are your thoughts of the build quality of the device?

And.. this is a bad point. The plastic in which the stock cover is built it's not perfect. After a couple of months I've had some scratches (not in the display, though) and I'm now buying a new cover.

6. Would you recommend buying the htc Tattoo today concidering the price range stated in question #2?

Yes. If that is your budget and if you don't plan in gaming all day long the Tattoo is definitely a perfect phone for you. As you can see, I'm enthusiastic with it, I use it all day, I tweet, I go to Facebook while I'm on the train, I Google, I maps, I read newspapers, I.. do almost everything. Perfect.
i like my tattoo very much. i paid 60-70 euros for it and since I'm a quad rider I usually wear gloves and the screen let's me handle the phone without taking them off.
if my other phone was ok i would have waited for Nexus to launch.
probably in 2011 i will sell it or when nokia morph is launched... :-??

So I tried installing it again after wiping my phone, and it installed fine. It's REALLY fast. Nice animations between opening windows. Bluetooth File transfer works after installing the BFT app. It was certainly a richer experience. Despite its current flaws, I'll be using it as my primary OS.

Hey Sheik - I didnt realise the devs had a rom that was that close to being the finished item - any other probs withthe rom - i.e. all of the widgets and screen sizes ok? 3g or data and wifi ok etc?
Most of the perks, I can live with. Wi-Fi is a little dodgy, but I can partly blame my router for that. Speed and connectivity problems even with the stock ROM. Of all the widgets I have, they work fine. The Music player needs to be worked on as its size exceeds the Tattoo screen both in portrait and landscape mode. My phone doesn't have 3G. I'm still stuck on 2G, and it works just fine.
Thanx everyone for your replys!
Here is an update from me=)
I have had a spica home for testing but I'm sending it back today I did not like the build qualiy, also has less ram than tattoo, and no sense ui). Me and my brother got the spica for the same price as e new htc tattoo (spica was B-grade" though). No more B-grade for me, one of the charger pins was a bit bend and both the charger and the phone was really dusty, the seller assured it was not in "used condition" though.
I can't help but wonder if the Tattoo would have been a better choise=P
As Genargo pointed out, the tattoo seems to handle 2.1 pretty well (while other sources state that samsung spica lags when scrolling through menues and pulling up the menu (even though this is a official 2.1 release).
But our android craving has been put on ice, atleast for the moment.

That sums it up quite nicely, I mean that is is for these kind of moments I want a android phone with me music / gaming and video (divx) is not that important. I guess I see it as a more portable netbook.
Perhaps I should wait and see how android matures, I bet there will be many new models this year. It's amazing how fast android is evolving. Too bad there is no perfect device, I bet there never will be. Another thing that worries me os the dust problem on bothe the HTC hero, Nexus one and the desire (?). Dust underneath the screen would drive me mad=P
Right now there does not seem to be a android phone with a really nice and sturdy buid quality out there. Legends aluminum would scratch too easyli in my opinion and I don't like the cheap feel of the buttons. Hero feels great, too bad that it has the "dust issue"=/
