You're nor using wifi for calling... lol. Vibrant often times shows Jo bars, yet it works with no issuesn turn off wifi and you wont even drop a call as you're not using it to make them in the first place.

Well depending on which firmware you're running the signal bar display isn't the most accurate representation of your connection anyway.
If you assumed, because you had a display with no bars that you were somehow magically making WiFi calls, you were just mistaken.

UMA is use with wifi... explanation: It give u the ability to talk over wifi. If u have minutes plan it doesn't waste your minutes. That's the way UMA works. I hope this information was helpful.

give a simple test turn off you wifi and make a call to 611.

Just to make sure, I'm guessing these settings are also being incorrectly displayed..
Edit: I'm talking about the signal strength which is saying 0 dBm 0 asu and the mobile network state that says its disconnected.
His rom is based off of JFD obviously and the bars/signal strength are busted on JFD. It will only read as high as -81dBm (wrong), has poor scaling (-97dBm/-111dBm/-0dBm after an RSSI of about -100 (on GSM), etc.
^Fixed on JI_. It would bounce between -0 dBm and like -89dBm.
Oh so it seems this is another thing we're waiting on JIT for to fix. Thanks.

If you don't have the UMA @Home plan, you can still use UMA, it just uses your regular minutes.
Fail-safe way to know you aren't calling through Wi-Fi - turn ON Airplane Mode then turn Wi-Fi on and try to make a call, it won't work.

Well not JIT (java compiler whatever in FroYo) but JI2 and JI4 (I didn't know the version we would be getting OTA so I just put an underscore). I have JI4 in that shot but there is no difference between the two. It's fixed. The bars do refresh often, much more often than HTC and Motorola allows their phones to so it will show service fluctuation quicker, that's unchanged. But it won't dip below 0 bars unless your service is below -109dBm in the Android system (Samsung seems to have their own backend that translates stuff to Android, it's readings can be different but we won't go into that)

You can make calls over wifi/3g now. Just requires somewhat of a lengthy set up. Quality is not super great but here are the steps if anyone is interested.
*rough draft*
Steps
1)Before we start do you have a google voice account..if yes go to step 2 if not go to the google voice homepage and sign up for a free number.Keep the page open...and open another tab
2) go to sipgate.com sign up for a free account (you will have to give your cellnumber to recieve a key to confirm your new free account). You can remove your cell number from the settings page later.(You can choose to install their softphone software now or later doesn't really matter) Be sure to keep open the Sipgate and google voice pages. You will be navigating between both.
3) Once you receive your free number from sipgate..(it will be a random number from california) go to the settings page copy the number sipgate given you , navigate to go google voice and add the sipgate number as the number google voice forwards to. Also make sure the number is set as a home number.
4) You will have to verify that number..with google voice..this when you will have to install the softphone software by sipgate. Have google voice call your sipgate number..and through the softphone dial paid just hit the 2 digit number given by google voice to confirm the sipgate number. (You can removed the sipgate software from your computer now)
5) The software i use to make outbound or receive calls..is sipdroid and gvoice callback which are both located in the marketplace and free. Download them both. There are other alternatives , but these are the two programs i used.
6) Once you installed both apps...open up sipdroid go to the settings-> sip account settings... now navigate back to sipgate settings page move your mouse cursor over the voip phone icon and click on credentials. Look at sipdroid now..and input the sip ID provided by sipgate as your authorization name in sipdroid ,the password, and the server is sipgate.com
7. Once you input everything.. sipdroid should register and you should see a green dot in your notification bar. Now open up Gvoice callback put your google voice account details in and put your callback number...as your sipgate number. For the callback setting you can set it as always..or ask it doesnt matter ...up to you. That should be it. ( I have mine to ask)
8. To test if you set up everything correctly turn on wifi...and put your phone into airplane mode. make a call ...there should be a prompt to make the call through gvoice callback once you make the call the sipdroid dialer will come up..and you will receive an incoming call from your sipgate number..just slide your finger up accept call and google voice will connect you to your actual call. As for receiving calls your contacts will have to dial your google number and sipdroid has to be running to pick up the call. Once you accept the incoming call hit 1 on the dialpad and your connected with the other person on the other line.
*Another tip..to make sure you have everything setup correctly is..sipgate gives you 60 free minutes to make outbound calls..you should only use a minute or 2 confirming the number with google...if you notice your mins going down then you probably messed up somewhere.*
Personal Experience
From my experience the call quality...is decent there is minor echoing that can be heard only by the person on the other end..but hey its free. You can also make calls of over 3g. Be sure to turn off sipdroid when you are not going to rly use it because..it can take a drain on the battery as it ..constantly registers itself. I read that you can setup pbxes..to route your inbound and outbound calls..which can help call quality and battery life as its tcp instead of udp , but it was too confusing for me to figure out.
Anyways I hope this information helps... whoever is curious about making free voip calls

Using it to call normal phone numbers uses minutes. The only free part is using it to call other Skype numbers. And you can already use Fring or Sipdroid from the Market to do this (AND do VoIP calls to normal numbers), so the Skype mobile app for Verizon is pretty much just crap.

Yeah your right it is pretty crappy that Skype put those restrictions on it by sleeping with the enemy (Big Red).
I was just going to see if it could work on T-Mo though because then I could get my family members to use it as well and make good quality voip calls like I could on the iPhone version.
SIPdroid is dear to my heart but the quality on outbound calls is pretty unusable for me, inbound is still good though. I tell all my friends that "if you get a call from me, dont pick up and just call me back."
Fring 3g quality was serviceable before but it was laggy (I would say something and the other person would start talking and then mid sentence would hear what I said and it would mess up the conversation). It probably has had some updates though so I will try it out again.
dunno if this helps but i read somewhere today that vonage is coming to tmobile and att with calls over wifi capability.
3 has got this for a long time now (no Android client yet) but the acctual calling is routed using a gsm center, no VOIP at all. I have installed the apk for t-mobile and it almost does the same thing ( it doesn't work outside tm network)

Thanks for the info you guys! I've made 3 calls over WiFi with Vonage app and the customer service reps say I sound crystal clear
Now for the real challenge boys... Since Vonage can make free domestic calls over wifi. How do we trick the N1, like on jailbroken iPhone's, into thinking its on wifi even if its on 3g?
Edit: The wifi calling is 100% free, dont add any money even if the app asks you for it (just press the back button to get rid of the prompt)

How do you KNOW it was making calls over wifi?
I just signed up and installed it, and no matter what I do, it always calls from my normal phone number, rather than my Google Voice number, which is what I chose during the sign up process.
Also, turning Airplane mode on and then turning Wifi on doesn't let me make any calls. It says disable airplane mode.
Is there a way to KNOW 100% whether the call is being routed over wifi or normal phone?

Just disable the phones radio via the INFO screen(Dial *#*#4636#*#* -> Phone Information ->)..

On my end I can guarantee that its making the calls through WiFi because of the data only plan I am on. T-Mo has two different types of $40/mo data plans:
1) $40/mo with T-mo hotspot access but cannot make ANY calls (except 911)
2) $40/mo without T-mo hotspot access but can make calls for $.10/min
I have the first option and if I try to make a regular call it says "the service you are attempting to use has been restricted or unavailable" and hangs up. Even if I try to make a call through GVoice it says the same thing so I know I cant make any cellular calls. But I can make a call through the Vonage app with WiFi (although I do have to have on Edge/3g with the WiFi your right).
I just checked my T-Mobile account as well and I dont see any minutes used either.
Now if only we can get this thing to think its on WiFi even if only on 3g!

I set Google Voice to "Do not use Google Voice to make any calls" to make sure it was only Vonage making the calls.
I'm tellin you guys this app works great on the free WiFi calls Just gotta hack the N1 for tricking it into thinking its on WiFi even while on 3g.
Lemme know if you guys have any trouble setting up the Vonage account to test...

When I set GV to not call intercept, it will just call using my normal phone number. Vonage just sits there doing nothing.
A few times the Vonage dialer has popped up (if I had GV set to make ALL calls), but then Vonage crashed (Force Close).

I believe it just forwards it , it will still used your t-mobile minutes.
For users under the old myFaves 5 plan (discontinue service) who grandfather the service they can actually setup their T-Mobile number as one of their favorite 5 number. Hence none of their minutes get used up since all the calls get forward back to your number which is in your favorite five that's what I used to do before I redid my contract and had to drop myFavorite plan
GV is not a VOIP service, Its just a forwarding or voicemail service. You cant get a GV number and use that to forward to all your phones at once or use it for voicemail or to make cheap worldwide calls by calling that number but it still all goes of your minutes, If calling overseas then you would call your local GV number so you wouldnt be charged those fees by tmob just GV but all voicemail and local calling is free to use cause its just a forwarding number basically...

how exactly did you configure yours? do you have myfaves and your GV number is one of the faves? I checked my tmobile logs and it looks like tmobile is calling a google number, then from there the call gets routed.
I also tried turning off my data connection and GV still works. but when I switched to aurplane mode and had my wifi on, GV calls will not go out.
Thus I believe it's not VOIP but just a forwarding service. If i'm mistaken please provide your setup and details. I think your info is inaccurate and the other posts are correct. and no need to bash the others for trying to help when you yourself didn't provide any concrete details as to whether it's voip or not.

In short just because you have not incurred additional charges for the past 16 months doesn't mean it's VOIP.
google voice just routes calls that u dial from ur fone say you wana call your friend joe from gv so mines i have it set up to ask me every time i dial a number either to use google voice or not so after clicking joe i would click use gv then it will call a gv number to connect you with your friend joe and its complety free i have only had data service when i got my g1 and then deactivated it. and use my fone using wifi for free texting and i have never payed for texting since i have it blocked. check this website out and youtube for tutorial that explain how gv works. www.google.com/voice

yup it routes it but not through data. i tried turning off my internet and gv still works. try it o yours and let me know if you can still use gv even without 3g or wifi. and please check your phone bill if you the call gets deducted from your minutes. from what i saw with with my tmobile usage, the gv calls show up.

i dont have data plan all i have is wifi and i dont have any texting from tmobile either and my minutes is not effected by gv i basically use gv to call my friends that have at&t and thats only if i am conected to wifi other wise i have to use my tmobile minutes. when i try to make calls without wifi it tells me unable to connect. hope i helped

my first Android fone was the g1 thats when i discovered it and now since iandroid got ported to the hd2 i can use it agjain so yea i am using GV app made by google
I have seen a bunch of UMA/Tethering threads that seem to taper off into tethering which more people seem to be into.
However, I barely get any signal in my house and really need UMA or I am going to have to return my sweet new G2 which I don't really want to do. How close are we to getting a UMA hack or the real thing in the form of update.

I agree. I am in the same position. The Wifi calling thread deteriorated into a Tethering thread and what I really need is exactly the same thing. I have to use my BB Bold 9700 with UMA once I get home to my house. I purchased the G2 with the hopes of Wifi Calling coming to it.
I am still believing that it WILL before year end, but obviously the sooner the better as I am getting sick of switching my sim card back and forth constantly.

Well, I returned my G2 (within the 14 day initial purchase). Maybe I will buy it again. I just can't deal with the intermittent no service in my house. Even my ATT iPhone had 1 bar in my house which assured the phone would ring and I could text.
If UMA comes to the G2 then I will be a very happy owner of it. Till then, pitty me for my use of a 3G iphone.
hopefully when the mytouchhd..or 4g? comes out the g2 gets the uma as well.. i get some ok signal at home but i want my UMA already.. ive had it for the last couple of years with my BB's
Just to clarify here. The Wifi calling on Android will not hand off to the cell network like it does on the Blackberry phones that support it.

For me, the not handing off isn't a problem. I rarely walk out the door with the phone against my ear. I just want to get phone calls in my house.
I have a Blackberry, and so does several of my friends. I've never seen a Blackberry hand off a UMA call to the network or vice versa. It always drops the call when it transitions between UMA and the cell network. So it sounds like it'll work just like a Blackberry.
If you have Gmail open on your computer and your phone does not have a signal it will ring on your computer. Not sure how I did it or if its auto but it will get me by til UMA/WiFi callings comes.

That's a feature of Google Voice. If you have setup Google Voice in your phone's voicemail settings, enabled GChat as a phone in your Google Voice settings, and set the Google Voice forwarding options for your mobile phone to ring your other phones before going to voicemail, then calls to your mobile number will ring in GChat.

Send and receive SMS to my permanent number, and when someone calls me, the call is forwarded to my work cell. Out bound calls go from my work phone (with or without Google Voice). Or I can use the Google Voice web interface to dial and then Google calls my work phone and the other phone.
The Tab # call forwarding is as far as I can tell not an official feature offered by VZW. In fact most of the folks I spoke to, at VZW, swore up and down that it wouldn't work.
Here is what I did:
Activated call forwarding from the regular cell on my permanent line.
Got a Tab, with its own #. Then swapped the two numbers and the call forwarding stuck.
I think there are about 4 people out there that this will be useful for but none the less all 5 of us will revel in our geekyness. (Insert mad scientist laughter here)
The advantage of all this is that I can finally get my SMS messages without carrying 2 "phones" (yes now I carry a tab and a work phone, that is bulkier package, yes, stop pointing out the obvious. This is only for a total of me and the 4 others remember? haha)
PS. Any programmers reading this, a clean Dialer app for the Tab that interfaces with the Google web dial feature would be awesome.
Hey I'm one of those four that appreciates the suggestion and idea! Ended up borrowing a friends old turd phone to port my ATT number to Verizon on. After it was activated and working I setup call forwarding to forward to my Skype number then immediately had them transfer that number to my new unactivated Galaxy Tab.
Works great have my same old cell phone number that I can text and pictures message and at the same time get calls automatically sent to my Skype so it's transparent to everyone calling me. Went ahead and set up Caller ID on Skype to appear as that same old cell phone number.
Thanks works great here as well hopefully they don't disable that down the line .
i just dont get why people would buy sprint or verizon tab? you can't do much with them, to me the GSM versions are the best.
Verizon has much better 3G coverage then both ATT and T-Mobile combined. Add to that Skype calling is $2.99 a month unlimited and works pretty great. Consider those using Skype need some strong and consistant 3G traveling.

Current modded Skype app (allows 3G calling) supports media profile only meaning only sound no mic support from the bluetooth headset. It's not that bad in my opinion you just need the tab in your immediate space.
Apparently it's partially a limitation with the Skype app, there is a much newer version out that might have added full bluetooth support but I haven't seen anyone mod it for 3G calling yet (keeping eyes peeled).
Maybe not everyone wants to make carrier based calls on their Tab? I know I have no desire to do that. I have a Sprint Tab and can do exactly what I want with it. I don't need a 7" phone. I bought my EVO for that =)
Carrier based calls on my cell and voip calls on my Tab for when I am going to have long work related calls (once they fix the BT profile that is)
I'm not sure if I'm overlooking this or not, honestly surprised it hasn't been mentioned.... I'm using Sipdroid (which now supports google voice) to make and receive free calls on the tab. Incoming calls are forwarded to the tab and outgoing calls work fine. I've used it with a wired headset, haven't tried it bluetooth yet. Call quality is very clear.

I'm still new to android. Do you mind explaining how you set up superior with google voice. Don't know how to use superior.

I'm also using sipdroid to make free calls thru google voice but how do you configure sipdroid to receive calls thru your google voice number? Bluetooth works for me though

I am now using the free CSipSimple app with a trial of Sipgate SIP service and Google Voice service.
I am giving out the GV# to my contacts so that I can change SIP or VOIP carriers without affecting the way I am contacted ever again. To do this I am forwarding calls that are made to the GV# to my Sipgate number, and in the future, any SIP or VOIP number I may end up with.
Sipgate seems pretty reasonable beyond the trial in that it costs 1.9 cents per miniute and you just load your account with credit when you need it. I am using the "Voice" GV app on my tab to handle text messaging to the same GV#, so that GV# is used for both text and voice.
Now to find a reasonable unlimited data plan.
Honestly for what Skype cost a month for unlimited calling in the US and Canada ($2.99 a month) it's a hard to beat option. I simply forward my cellphone/tab number and GV# to Skype and I have Skype caller ID setup to display my GV# when I make calls out.
Add in the latest release 1.0.0.614 (1.0.1) fixes every single shortfall with the Skype app including more notifications for chat and everything else, no more signing out / time outs (8 hours strong without touching the tab still signed in and running), contact integration, etc. I'm using a modded apk for 614 that allows incoming and outgoing calls on 3G and it works without issue.
I may look into Sipdroid and Sipgate as alternatives but for the price Skype works great and has a great backbone as well (considering it's size and use).

Well I hit the dreaded bug we've been experiencing on 614 since adding the 3G hack "Already 2 ongoing calls, you must end one call before you can start another one". So it worked great and then now road block , reboot and flush and still the same thing it's like it magically can't call out from 3G (strange).
I'll report as I figure it out.

i have tmobile, i can forward calls to my tmobile number to google voice and have it work over 3g or wifi?
i get a very bad signal only at home and cant make calls sometimes, so when someone calls my number itll just send to GV instead?

With Google Voice you can forward calls to multiple devices, including your cell phone, or your land line if signal strength is poor at home. Alternatively, Skype over WiFi can be very cool and very cheap - I use Skype on my tab for all outgoing calls from home as I have a poor cell signal.
GV is more than just Visual VM for Android - it is opening the door to a new generation of voice communications that will leave telephone numbers as obsolete as the old Compuserve numbers...

thanks i have it set up and will test it out when i switch over to 3g, my plan was to switch over to 3g and disable the phone but if someone calls my tmobile # it can forward to google voice and ring me while on 3g.. hopefully this works lol
Don't know if this was mentioned but the integrated internet calling+Gizmo5+GVoice Callback app works great! will test some more but looks like sipdroid is now obsolete. Hopefully Google will integrate callback into the google voice app to make it more seamless.
sipdroid and other similar apps were bound to become obsolete as Google moves forward implementing their desktop internet calling features.
Honestly, IMO, they are lagging behind. I still don't understand why Google hasn't fully integrated gmail calling into Android as it has all the means to do so.
Let's hope we don't have to wait till 3.0 for that feature....I have horrible reception at my work (old NYC concrete building that nothing seems to be able to penetrate...even Verizon's CDMA) I would love o be able to default to wifi calling when at work.
Excellent news. Sipdroid worked, but it was hardly elegant and often drained the battery like made.

Most likely? They're afraid of pissing off the carriers. Same reason why SIP is only usable in WiFi in 2.3 (Though you can bet dollars to beans that it'll be usable in 3G once someone pokes the code in custom ROMs)

CSipSimple does not normally contribute more than 2% of my battery usage -- and that's normal usage, not just idling. As long as Android's built-in SIP calling is WIFI only I think I'd keep it around.

I got a load of problems with csipsimple
it would even crash the phone application from time to time when receiving incoming calls via gsm
CSIPSimple caused many problems on my end as well, but Sipdroid has been working fine for quite a while in my case.
Hopefully CyanogenMod will include 3G (and 2G...) calling right from the beginning, seems like a no-brainer.

Wondering the same thing. With all the AOSP roms around I would have thought this would have been one of the first things added.
Sipdroid will stay with me for now.
When I setup my GB 2.3 internet wifi with Gizmo and Google call back (as I don’t have free out going minutes), I had to wait for the call back (to ring back) to connect my call.
With sipdroid , the call will go thru as normal without delay.
i wish there was an option to ignore cell calls when a SIP incoming call is coming in at the same time.
The reason I want this is becasue when someone calls my Google Voice number it rings my cell number and my SIP number, I then get 2 calls on my phone and its annoying and sometimes messes up the call

You can use the Google Voice Settings Locale plugin (I can't remember the exact name, sorry) with either Locale or Tasker to automatically toggle which number GVoice will ring based on your wifi connection state.
can anybody confirm call waiting is working on native sip client?
