[Q] SetCPU settings for Epic? - Epic 4G General

Being new to the Android world, I'm a little unsure of what my settings should be for SetCPU on my Epic.
Looking for something that would offer a good balance of battery and performance without crippling the device too much.
Thanks in advance...

I keep mine short and simple. I am using a kernel at allows for overclocking so I set the max to 1.2Ghz and the min to 200Mhz. You can play around with the scaling to see which governor works for you best. It's really up to your butt-o-meter.
Under "Profiles" I have one single profile for "Sceen Off" that keeps my EPIC at 200Mhz when the screen is off.

Your epic doesn't freeze when you do that? No matter which kernel I use, if I set it so that my phone down clocks when the screen is off it freezes. It won't unlock and the only way for me to be able to use it again is to pull the battery out and reboot.

I set mines to min 100 max 1200 conservative scaling and its been almost 48 hours and I have yet to have a lock up or freeze up im using the Stoopid fast kernel posted in Android development, set cpu 2.03 and AOSP OC v2 ROM

Nope. Seems to love it. I guess my EPIC and my EVO share their love for UV + underclocking maybe they really are related

I keep my Epic 1.2 -600 , I'd recommend the Stoopid Fast Kernel as well. The phone is still quick and phone is better with battery life and a hell of a lot quicker when it comes to charging.

I have mine set to 100 Min / 1200 Max. No problems that I can tell.
MixUp kernel.

What about the advanced settings? Can somebody explain to me what they are for?

when i input my own settings it wont show the settings. it just says 1 if at max and 0 if anything else. i love the app i just dont think its really working. i'm wondering if the kernel i'm on allows it to change cpu speeds.
running suppernova build 1.5
kernel 2.6.32.9 (not sure what that means)

i was always told to leave it on concervative scaling for sgs phones. Conservative won't allow my phone's screen to toggle on if my max is over 400. If i set it to ondemand, it works just fine at 400mhz.

I forgot where I read it but it was when I sold my Evo and moved to this section of the forums. I'll look around some more and see if I come up with something but I thought it was something like "Until Froyo gets officially released Set Cpu can't work with it. I bought set cpu a long time ago and didn't use it since. I'm about to throw that bad boy on though to see if it makes any difference.

It's not that SetCPU doesn't work with froyo, but the stock kernel on froyo already scales between 100mhz to 1000mhz without it. I do not have it installed and when I run a system monitor mine usually idles between 200mhz to 400mhz and ramps up whenever a notification comes in or syncing starts.
Just did a screen cap and the phone it idling at 135mhz.

also. setCPU messes with your 4g connection to connect. i wasent able to connect when i turnned on the setcpu but i was on the stock conservative setting. i think 4g requires alot of cpu usage that setCPU dosent recognize. SMH

G2 benchmark... numbers sucked!

Just flashed enoms g2 rom and I cleared up what I can, tried making it efficient.I ran some benchmark tests on quadrant standard and was kinda disappointed in the numbers. My bests score was low 1100 after that it was 850,900, 835... very basic stuff any suggestions???
Sent from my T-Mobile G2 using XDA App
If you ran the benchmark on battery power, try plugging the phone in. Sometimes the CPU will underclock itself to save power. If that doesn't work, download SetCPU (google it) and make sure that the max speed is set above 800 MHz.
On the stock G2 ROM I was getting 1600-1800... maybe it's the ROM your using

Yeah this is the typical range for a stock G2.
Those scores in the OP are so low, its almost like hes underclocking or something. Or possibly a running application using a ton of resources?
i got 2064. but i was running virtuous.
im running enom's rom and i had it underclocked at 768 and i was still able to get 1609

What should I have my phone clocked at with enoms rom?? I dnt have much running at all I dnt understand why its so slow, I was gunna flash the latest kernal and try that... clock settings please anyone
Edit: jus tweaked my clock on spareparts. I switched cpu governor from ondemand to performance and the clock setting. I put underclock at the lowest and overclock at the max highest... benchmark test put up a 2200... I feel as if this will drain battery like crazy only time will tell... what do u think, should I drop the overclock? Is it safe at that high number???

If I run with Flippy's kernel, CM 6.1.1 Stable and OC my phone to 1.8 GHz, I can get a Quadrant score of 3037 (screenshot below). With it OC'd to 1.4 GHz (my normal OC setting) I can get around 2500.

If I'm averging 2500 I'm fine wit that my current settings are Enoms Rom
Using enoms cpu controls
Cpu governor: performance
Max frequency: 1,516,800
Min frequency 245,760
I dropped 3 percent in battery writing this message.... my main concern is battery and overworking the cpu.... I'm thinking about downloading set cpu and clocking the performance settings then set it for power save after a certain drop point........ does this sound logical?
Sent from my T-Mobile G2 using XDA App
When you set your cpu to performance it means your cpu will stay at max all the time and it never goes down which is why you are getting bad battery life.
There is no need for that.
Yes you can do that with setcpu

Is SetCpu still needed?

Many of the newer kernels have builtin scaling, e.g. smartass governor. And some others I've seen mentioned that SetCpu has no impact.
So is it still advised for root users? There's also Overclock Widget which people claim does the same thing (with less options).
ive never used setcpu, it's not needed IMO.
If you are using a kernal with havs, then no its not needed. Im running a stock kernal, and I love setcpu. Give me at least a full day battery, sometimes 2-3 days if im light on the usage. Without it, I cant go more than 8 hours.
What about for overclocking. Using say netarchy's 4.3.2
You still need setcpu right?
I use SetCPU for overclocking and to switch governors only. I don't use any profiles because I use a HAVS kernel that works beautifully.
If you are using cm7, in the cyanogen mod settings there is a area where you can set the CPU and governor.

so.. what do you mean.. dont use profiles because of havs....
and is there a way to overclock without setcpu or something similar?
object of debate... mostly used to set profiles. alot of devs will recommend not to if need be in their roms but if used in a rom with scaling script the setcpu tends to override it.
I use SetCPU for one giant reason: Profiles. I don't want my phone overclocking at all when the screen's off, or the battery is super-low. When it's plugged in? Sure.

I used to think like this until I tried running w/o setCPU for a couple days with cm7 to find out if it made a difference. I'd challenge anyone running cm7 to set your oc + gov in the cm7 settings and disable setCPU for a day; I bet the results would surprise you.

I'll try it.
I really only use it for changing governors and I used to use it for screen-off. However, I realized that if you're running something in the background that needs more than 245 MHz and the screen is off, it'll run slowly (ie fetching album art in "3" [the music player]).
When I'm on Myn's I use Netarchy Toastmod 4.3.2 CFS SBC More Aggressive without SetCPU. I believe it's set to Conservative by default. It runs super smooth. Right now I'm on CM7 RC1 with SavagedZen 0.9 CFS SBC GB without SetCPU, since CM7 has a built in menu for changing governor and CPU min/max.
Well, tried ditching SetCPU, and tbh, didn't see all that much of a battery life change. Some days it was better, most days it was a little worse (by about an hour or so). But because of the profiles and all, I'll be sticking with SetCPU for now.

I usually get over 24 hours with moderate usage everyday!
If you check the attached picture, you'll see that I got like 1 day and a few hours on that charge! Then I was learning how to take a snapshot of the screen and the phone was charging in the mean time...
but after that 1 day and 4 hours or so, I still had around 29-30% battery left...
how did you take that snapshot of your screen?

Yeah, I'm a big fan of "lean and mean" so I use Screen Shot a lot (by GikSoft). If there was an icon in the Notif area for ShootMe, it looks like it's gone now; and I don't see an option to enable/disable it in ShootMe.

It's such a simple thing to do, but so many people ask how to do it. I figured a separate thread would help keep other threads from filling up.

Is there any advantage to setting it to underclock to 368 instead of 245? I would think setting it to 245 would conserve even more battery life...?
No disadvantage other than when the CPU ramps back up from the screen being off. I just wait about 1 second before unlocking my screen, but I'm a little OCD about my device performing as smooth as glass. Even though I know WHY it's a little slow when ramping back up, I just don't like to "feel" it go slowly.
I've been watching Faux's thread and I really dig what he's doing, how transparent he's being, etc. The performance coming from screen-off to screen-on is supposed to be a smoother with that kernel and what he's done to it.
I love my ROM and the way my device performs, so I sort of don't want to change a good thing. That being said, we all know why we got into Android in the first place.

Overclocking the phone to even 787Mhz makes it quite unstable. That's why clock speeds above 806Mhz are not included in most kernels...but even if you do somehow overclock to 844Mhz I don't think the phone would survive for more than 15- 30 mins not to mention lots of heating up. In short-such speeds are not feasible for daily usage

Like the other ones written bevor me. Overclocking the O1 above 786 Mhz are like Gambling. Every CPU are a litle bit Unique, so nobody knows what kind of Frequency youre once are able to handle.
For Exemple iam running myone stable @ 320/787. But every Step Higher will be results in FCs and Reboots.
So the only way to go is to OC youre Phone step by step to find out what kind of Frequency youre CPU can handle
I once accidentally left my phone on 787mhz performance after benchmarking, and after a few days my phone crashed and would not boot into android, scared the **** out of me, but after about 10 mins it was fine, i quickly found out why this happened after. Overclocking your phone to 787mhz adds a lot of extra heat to your phone, and unless you live in a freezer or Antarctica and never keep your phone in your pockets I would not recommend over-clocking it that high.
If your new to the whole overclocking things, youtube extreme overclockers and you will realise would needs to be done to cpus to overcome the excessive heat.

When I go beyond 800 system crashes and Phone restarts
In theory our CPU could be OC to max 878 MHz. But i never heard anyone get that freq.

How to keep CPU downclocked? SetCPU gets pushed out of RAM...

Running Nottachtrix 1.2.1. Want CPU to stay underclocked for battery life...lasts way longer at 600mhz.
Use SetCPU to adjust the clock speeds.
System Tuner works very well for me.

Setcpu also. Never had issues with it.

One issue that I have had with underclocking is that whenever I underclocked, the second core goes offline and stays offline forever. If you use system tuner, you will notice that the second core will remain offline unless you go back to 1ghz.

So why isn't it sticking for me? It lasts for a few minutes but goes away because I'm not sure why.
Did you try adding a profile and checking notifications? That might keep it in memory...

You only use both cores when you need it, and 99% of the time the Atrix does not need to utilize both cores. You will see them kick in working full time when using the lapdock. I use System Tuner with Faux 1.0GHz and mild UV on Nottachtrix 1.3.1. Everything runs fine as far as CPU utilization goes.

Going to try setting notifications to keep it in the status bar...that may have been my problem doh...
Edit: where is that setting? I have profiles and set on boot enabled I don't see a notifications option though...

I know that you only use both cores when you need it but when you underclock to let's say 750Mhz or lower, the second core will go offline after a while and stay like that. If you play a game or watch a video, the second core will still stay offline and one way to find out is to go to the "Times" tab in System Tuner, and you will see that the second core has not been working at all even when you play intensive 3D games or watch HD videos. This happens only when you underclock.
Use Faux's enhanced stock kernel. U won't be disappointed. Here.http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1156040

Im waiting for faux to release the 026 version for CM7.
Why not just use the 1.3 ghz overclock kernel and underclock to 1.0 stock?

If your phone isn't clocking to a certain speed, it doesn't believe it actually needs the second core. I think it kicks in after 800mhz or so

I believe the second core has to work when you are playing 3d games and watching HD videos regardless of the frequency. I basically want both cores to work at 750mhz but the second always goes offline and it never comes back. Even when browsing you can feel that its slower due to the second core not working.

strange I don't have that. Maybe because I'm running gingerbread stock based Nottachtrix ROM?

doesn't work either. Whatever controls the max frequency goes away...gets pushed out of RAM...returns to full overclock of 1.3ghz.
