Well. I have decided to actually go to the Evo from the Epic. I have my reasons. I will get 50 back. I love the Epics screen and the keyboard, which I am using right now actually. The thing that gets me is. I can't put a pin on it but. I just like the Evo better. Its not the hardware. Which is still awesome and I love. Considering the Epic has much better hardware it is hard to explain the switch. I think I would enjoy the screen more. Is it gorilla glass? Also will he Evo get gingerbread? This is a hard decision...I like that the Evo has the otterbox support and such a large community. Also I think I woul enjoy the evo more. In a few months. Actually 3 I will have another upgrade to use and I believe something will be out by then. Also I had a Hero an I love Htc products. I also want Freshes roms. Lol

The EVO is going to get all of the updates that the Epic gets and probably more. It also has much better developer support. HTC is just a much better phone manufacturer than Samsung.
That's really a big reason I want to switch. The other one is. This ismy first super smartphone...and I think the Evo ould be a much better starting point. There will be something new by janurary and I will have another upgrade to use. Also froyo can be rooted correct? Was there a new OTA update that blockedrooting on 2.2? I do realize I am only on the 3rd week for the epic but the Evo isn't that outdated. Infact it isn't even close.

The EVO is fully rootable right now on any version.

hardware wise..actually it is..same snapdragon that was released in the nexus and HD2 creeping up on a year ago..
the Snapdragon cant hang with the TI Omap and Cortex processors. People can say it doesnt make a difference, but it does. Launching apps, 1GHz is 1GHz, so its about equal on both phones when it comes to handling tasks, but when it comes to graphics and rendering, the Epic blows the Evo out the ballpark. I dont wanna turn this into another Evo vs Epic debate, but if were stating facts lets state them correctly..

yes but thats the thing. The android market has yet to see any big graphical games. There is a few games that use advanced graphics, but they can still be handled by the evo. It will take about a year or so to see good games being developed for android, but before that time, evo will still be ontop, even with it's old processor.
+ idk about you, but I'd rather play games on either my ps3, or my pc. I never looked at phones as a gaming platform, and never will. If you want to emulate games from n64, and stuff, just install it on your ps3/pc, and go from there. I don't see a point on playing n64 games on a phone.

I have a few graphically intensive games such as NOVA and I very rarely play these games that is why I am reqally leaning towards the EVO I don't use my phone for mobile gaming...well 3d that is. So its not that huge of an issue. Is the Evos processor still enough for normal tasks and not gaming?

Definitely. The EVO is super-snappy, and the processor is easily enough.

agreed, I dont care about gaming on a cell phone. The only reason i brought that up is because the epic offers a much smoother experience when scrolling and pinching and zooming and **** like that because of the better GPU

i am by NO means saying the Evo is a slouch, its still majorly fast, and is a DECENT gaming device if your into that, I was just making a point when the guy said the Evo is far from being outdate. I still love my Evo
Hey i really only buy HTC phones just do to development of them on this site..my girl has the epic and i think shes gonna either go evo in a week or hopefully they release a win pho 7 at the begining of october
Evo can play some 3d games..but for me I'll play a 3d game for alittle bit, but touch screen and accelerometer does not work for me. unless I get a keyboard and mouse hooked up

Snapdragon uses a 1ghz cortex A8 CPU. The difference you are trying to explain is GPU not CPU. The Hummingbird SoC uses a PowerVR SGX540 GPU, Snapdragon SoC uses a Adreno 200 GPU, the SGX540 is roughly 4-5x more powerful in terms of triangles per second.
However, I don't trust Samsung to build quality phones. I love my EVO and will keep it for the foreseeable future.
Not to be off topic but I heard rumors of dual core proccesers out by x mas, any one here about that?
Sent from my netarchy_toast, froyo beast of a machine evo!
Thats one thing I learned about Samsung, on paper the specs are superior, but on actual performance and real world usage it falls far behind. The hardware is great, but the software they put on to run it is an epic fail. I haven't used the epic 4g yet, but this has been my experience with past Samsung phones and I dont expect the current to be much different.
And yes evohack I have also heard that dual core phones are scheduled to be out in Q4.
I have the fascinate and I can.say that the sammys needs help with their crap software. Touchwiz is a horrible joke and the GPS and lag is a real issue. Glad its not my primary phone. Thanks to google voice I can.play around with multiple phones and still get all.my calls.
The phone could.have used a better backcover. It feels cheap and prone to.smudges. should.have given it a rubberized feel like they do with a lot of the new.cases would.help. I might create something for that.
The phone is lightweight and screen is nice. Sammys better off with less touchwiz and more froyo. Hope he community will have something soon for it.

right, i think the adreno is about 20 million triangles per second where the SGX is about 90 million
I'm leaning at getting my 50 bucks back and getting the evo. Coming from the epic, it probably will look like crap to you. Not as bright and the colors wont slap you in the face. Its not bad, but not great to today's standards, somewhere in the middle, eh good enough lol. But hey its HTC so if it can be improved you'll see it here at XDA first. It all comes down to the SAMOLED, keyboard and community support really. I personally dont think that the CPU/GPU are going to make much difference because of how Samsung implements it. Like I said specs are specs but at the end of the day if the frameworks and kernels are botched and half assed, well you know the rest and what to expect.

idk, to me the screen nor the keyboard are big points. The screen has burn in issues, and some of the colors aren't even displayed right. + I'm pretty sure the screen is a lot more expensive to replace then an lcd one and easier to break/scratch.
The only reason I thought of switching a while ago was the cpu/gpu, but after I thought about it, it just would be retarded to switch.
Because:
1. TW is crap compared to sense.
2. The cpu/gpu would be a waste since I wouldn't even use it much.
3. It's samsung.

Okay... the phone lineup for Sprint has been getting really ridiculous. Tmobile has been getting amazing phones. Verizon has been getting amazing phones. ATT has been getting amazing phones.
Sprint? Another friggin Evo with a hardware keyboard? COME. ON.
I think I'm bailing soon. The Evo was cool at first but has already showed its 2008 age hardware to be slowing down. I cant stand the lag on a 2010 phone. The GPU sucks making all future gpu acceleration useless and games run like ballsack on it already. The screen is nice but does not makeup for its flaws. The camera is sticking out like a giant ass that can't be blocked.

Sprint just needs more phones to choose from....
wait for ces they should have more phones coming right after that
Hmm...if I was that unhappy,i sure wouldn't still be with sprint/evo..

Believe me sir, every phone out right now have a flaw in it. I went from N1, to blackberry (bbm reasons), epic 4g, optimus one, and now the evo. And i can make this assertion "your phone is what you make of it". I treat my phone like my desktop computer, install only what i use, constantly clearing cache every two weeks etc. Now unfortunately for me i have the newer hardware so i cannot take advantage of the custom kernel, but my phone is buttery smooth. I use titanium back-up to remove all the unwanted files, installed Go Launcher (love this launcher) and Go SMS. The only thing i can say is, LG got it right, my Lg optimus seriously never drops below 175mb ram no matter what i throw at it, i'm assuming this is why it's so smooth also. I think it's more software side than hardware, i'm sure when Gingerbread comes out and all hardware supported, plus stable, you won't be hating your evo so much.
Let me get this out there.
The Evo has some old hardware and some new.
The phone SUCKS if you don't root it and put some good ROMs on it.
I'm on Myn's and the phone is fast enough for me. It has also become really sexy cause Myn's dark theme is the best I've seen on a phone. Hero's Baked Kernel 6 is giving me crazy battery life as well.
The things I don't like....
- Screen Quality : Man this thing looks like crap compared to Galaxy S or Droid X... 16-bit and colors aren't strong.
- Camera Quality : Yeah we have an 8mp camera, but HTC's crappy software makes it worse than it really is. Some 5mp shooters do better. Luckily custom Roms can fix this.
- GPU : Pissed me off when I realized the Snapdragon Processor comes with 2008-like GPU. Adreno 200 is capable of quite a bit, but again, HTC doesn't release the drivers for anything. The GPU can be coded for and if games are optimized enough, it'll run well. But developers don't care. Luckily, Gingerbread increases graphical performance by quite a bit.
And that's about it right now.

The Optimus One line is actually pretty impressive for a sometimes free low end phone. It has the same amount of RAM as the EVO and the same GPU as the EVO but runs at almost half the resolution. This results to some pretty impressive performance. Stuff like the 3D gallery app and 3D maps in Google Maps runs much smoother than on the EVO. The only thing holding it back is the CPU (600 MHz ARMv6 vs. 1 GHz A8) but even then the design of the chip is not that different than that of the Snapdragon (Modem/FPU co-processor).
The EVO for the most part is pretty good, and probably still one of the best featured phones out even 6 months later. Nothing on it really stands out as best in it's class but it's okay, the only issue is the GPU - it sucks. You can't run LWs and still be at 55 FPS (most of the time it drops to under 30), some games run pretty awful, and some apps don't run as smooth. Everything runs but when you have a newer phone right next to it you can really feel the difference. And the benchmarks speak for themselves, the SGS/NS is 4x better and the Droids are 2x better. That's just the way it is.
The new EVO Shift is not just another EVO though. It's a Desire Z with WiMax and a EVO looking front. It still has the newer 45nm 800 MHz Qualcomm CPU that beats out the EVO by a little and the newer Adreno 205 GPU that is about 3-4x better. It's a ugly looking phone and a little late but performance wise it's still on par with any phone released today.
@ Award Tour : Yep... Droid 1/ Droid 2/ Droid X (and the new droids like Droid Pro) all do 2x better than the Evo. That is enough. It doesn't even need to outdo the Galaxy S phones because it really doesn't matter at that point. All other games run fine mostly because those games are coded for Iphone first generally, with similar GPU.
And Evo Shift has better GPU so it's an okay upgrade cause that's the only thing I really care about.
Cause really, everything else is software. And custom Roms do the job.
And I like HTC phones because they upgrade fairly quickly compared to other companies and release decent phones with GREAT development backing.
But then again I also hate them because they latch onto old hardware sometimes (Qualcomm... thanks) and don't optimize their current software sometimes.

The Adreno 200 GPU as it is now (both from a hardware and software perspective) sucks. I don't ever expect it to perform as well as the newer stuff (it just doesn't have the specs) but there's still hope for better performance. It seems that the drivers were ultra buggy (from CM work on 2.3) and if you replace the Adreno 200 drivers with the newer Adreno 205 drivers, 2D performance increases by like 100% but unfortunately it completely breaks 3D rendering.
Maybe with the upcoming Google provided 2.3 Adreno 200 drivers (which I got to assume fixes those bug CM ran into) plus the core graphic performance in 2.3 we may see some new life in this GPU. At least I hope so.
Meanwhile Apple is kicking ass in the hardware department. I just don't friggin understand this... Is it so hard to make top tier phones with GOOD hardware? It seems like the only one is the Nexus S right now and its made by crappy Samsung and their cheap plastic. Not to be a fanboy for any side but when put into perspective if the iPhone was on Sprint I would switch today. Android really needs to get their act together and start making the user experience perfect.
I use my generation 1 ipod touch and it does not lag a single bit in anything but my Evo lags in everything it does. Really shows how much software needs to be optimized instead of releasing bullcrap versions of Android every 3 months.
I mean CMON is anyone else frustrated at this? We all pay a lot of money for a SMART phone but it seems like they come to us from the manufacturer as stupid phones and we have to make them smart by taking out all the stupid crap and optimizing it ourself. Why do we even pay for the phone? Should be free.

I own a iPhone 4, and I'm not going to lie, it runs and performs perfectly but that's expected when you only have to optimize the software for a few devices. But it's not the best hardware available either. The SGS was released around the same time and had a GPU that was twice as fast, the cameras were just about as good and sometimes better. The Droid X at around that time had the same exact GPU, and now the newer HTC phones (Desire HD, Z, MT4G, G2) all have GPUs that are twice as fast as well. The CPU in the iPhone 4 was a 800 MHz Cortex A8, and every high end Android around that time had the same Cortex A8 but clocked at 1 GHz (and now more) so it was never the fastest; I also wouldn't be surprised if the Snapdragon chip design beats Apple's A4 head to head when both clocked at 1 GHz.
TBH, most of the blame for performance lies directly with Android. It's just not that fast performance wise. The iPhone 4 is down clocked CPU wise, has a "mid level high end" mobile GPU (PowerVR SGX 535), and runs at a higher resolutions but still runs circles around the Nexus S. Hell, for a even strong example look at WP7. It uses the same crap Adreno 200 as the first gen Snapdragon (what the EVO has) and runs waaaaaaaayyyyyy smoother.

I wouldn't get it but I also wouldn't call the CPU/GPU outdated. It's practically a given that it's just a rebranded Desire Z which is part of HTC's latest line of phones -- at least for now.

Hmm, well the latest specs that I read (about a week ago) said that it would have an 800mhz processor - endgadget says 5mp camera, no front-facing, ect. Not sure the front facing camera has every been used on my phone, but it's still cool to have, I guess; I was referring more to the outdate/price of it in my mind - Radio Shack said $150, so to me, it's outdated/slower/smaller than the EVO and costs more.

How is it slower? I agree that it's not a overall very appealing phone but how is it faster? It has a better CPU but more importantly it has a much better GPU.
This is the 2nd gen snapdragon and it overclocks like a motha! I been hearing 1.7 Ghz OC stable on G2's. I'm just turned off by the small screen and the keyboard. It's a shame really. I just hope the next evo has the looks of the Desire HD, but with better cpu/gpu.

I am all over this if those specs are correct. I have been looking for a slide out keyboard smartphone running android. I know there is the Epic, but Samsung phones have a history of no support/sucking.
Currently got an Touch Pro 2, and just waiting for the perfect phone. The front facing camera is the make or break for me. I would like to have that, and if this phone ends up not having it then I won't get it. All the pictures seem to show a camera on the front by the top speaker bar, so I am hoping all the rumors that there is no FFC are wrong.

Previous specs from androidpolice.com NOT correct (here is the box showing the 5MP camera, no ffc). It's the desire-z without the hinge. Still a better cpu/gpu than the evo, but...

I'm happy to say that I have no problem with sticking with my evo. The shift seems like the att airea to me - very degraded and outdated tech.

What's funny is the Evo is actually about to be outdated tech. Hell, the CPU/GPU is the next generation of Snapdragon, so it is actually moving forward.
My girlfriend has an Evo, and i love it, but i like how this phone has the same resolution in a smaller screen.
I'm definitely getting one on launch day.
The internals are better in the Evo shift than the Evo.
Clock speed is irrelevant, much like clock speed on processors.
Don't even try to suggest that the i5s at 2.5 ghz are slower than the Pentium 4 3.0ghz.
My comment to the Evo shift is the fact that, while it is better than the Evo, it is 2010 technology.
By summer we are going to have 2011 technology.
Why would I not just wait 3 - 5 months and pay the same amount for much better?
I find it odd not one person has mentioned the landscape sense. That's usually a hit
I'm still unsure about this device. I love my EVO, and I love the G2, but the screen size on the Shift is just too small for me. Not to mention, the buttons at the bottom look laughably too big on the poor thing.
I guess it would be pretty nice to have the new CPU/GPU butttt I'm not sure. I'm pretty picky about keyboards so maybe I will know once I've played with one in person.

I would be surprised if there wasn't an Evo 2 to with dual-core processor released in the summer.
Good point; it doesn't have the new Sense either, which sucks!

Well the phone is smaller but that D-pad does not make any sense... why include such thing on a device with a touchscreen. Even better would be to remove the D-pad to make space for some additional keys OR expand the current keys.
It looks 'toy-like' similar to the Epic.
I think I will wait for another device. Staying with the EVO until something else pops up.

My wife is completely gaga over this phone and being someone who got suckered by Samsung and my local sprint reps (When I was torn between the epic and the evo at epic launch, they all said 'hands down its the epic it'll have 2.2 in a few weeks'...heh) into buying a phone with a keyboard I wish I had gone the other way. Personally, I hate the blue tint of the phone, I despise the trackpad (who uses a trackpad anymore?), I could care less about the lack of FFC or the 5mp vs 8mp but in all honesty there needed to be a smaller alternative for people wanting high-end hardware on sprint without having to have a massive screen. Part of the reason my better half loves this phone is that she rarely carries a purse and if she got an Epic or an Evo she could not carry her phone in her pocket as she is used to and would then have to carry a bag for it.
Sprint just posted the fact sheet but no availability date.
http://newsroom.sprint.com/news/htc-evo-shift-4g-fact-sheet.htm
the fact sheet says it has the newest version of HTC Sense. There's no reason they wouldn't include it.
Well not really I just thought that would be funny. This is what happened after reading on gizmodo that the ipad2 demolished the xoom in glbenchmark 2.0 I had to check for myself. Theres no ****ing way that pos ipad does that well against tegra. I know that ios doesnt support multitasking and what not. I basically feel ios is more efficient with hardware. Just like macs require less cpu speed then a windows pc to do the same task. Doesnt mean windows or android sucks, they just work off completely different architechtures. But Ill be damned if those numbers are true. I base this not because of how high the ipad scored against the xoom but how close xoom scored compared to ipad1...
theres no ****ing way tegra performs so poorly against the ipad and its powervr535. Same damn chip in the evo. My epic rapes the evo in gpu. We all know it. So according to that test tegra isnt really much faster than powervr535. This to me is bull**** so I decided to run glbenchmark 2.0 to see how i fared compared to the tabs. I checked off all the tests. Went back to my psp to play some ff9 and when i look back at my epic theres a responseless black screen with the touch sense buttons lit.. WTF?!?!?!? It started vibrating and still doing nothing so I pulled the battery. Restarted and I was taken to the touch android to begin screen followed by a ****LOAD of force closes...
Anyone got any idea? I'm just gonna reflash no biggie but thats ****ing weird.
btw..
AOSP clone 2.2 is the rom yo.
Actually the ipad 2 does kill tegra for the same reason our phones match it in real word tests. The powervr sgx543mp gpu in the ipad is a multicore version of what is in our epics. Tegra may have two cpu's but the gpu's in tegra are only on par or barely better than our epic's sgx540. Since I don't know of any tasks on a phone that really benefit from the extra cpu power afforded by two cpu's I will skip over tegra and try to base my next cell phone buying decisions based on gpu and ram not cpu.
Too often people neglect the fact that ram and gpu power are the real limiting factors to system performance.
Edit: Just fyi the evo's 65nm snapdragon uses an adreno 200 gpu. Droid x uses an sgx535 as does the iphone 3gs, 4 and original ipad. The sgx 535 is about half as powerful as the sgx 540 in the epic and the adreno 200 is about half as powerful as sgx535 or one fourth as powerful as our sgx540. The adreno 205 in the evo shift, g2, mytouch 4g and inspire 4g is roughly on par with sgx535.

Uh, the Tegra 2 is garbage. I dont know why people think its all high and mighty still. Its literally a joke at this point. It got DEMOLISHED by the A5 and PowervrSGX543MP2 less than 2 weeks of making its mass market debut. LOL. Also, its incapable of playing high profile h.264, something that the ORIGINAL iPad could handle fine. Its junk. I will be avoiding all Tegra 2 products.

Just one correction the droid x and droid 2 use the omap 3 chip which has a sgx 530 not a 535
So no one got the part where glbenchmark killed my phone? lol I just loaded bonsai and the same thing happened.
Back the tegra issue. even though vr543mp is better and dual core it still doesnt ake sense that tegra and vr535 score so closely. Theres a much bigger margin or performance between 535 and 540. Also I apologize for mistaking adreno 200 to vr535.
How did you install gl benchmark? You sure it wasn't malware?
I downloaded it off theyre web site. Im pretty sure it isnt malware lol
Alright so after doing a bit of research i now know tegras gpu performance compared to other chips. Anandtech also has an article pitting tegra against hummingbird and tegra came out on top but not by much at all. I think this needs to be retested once galaxy tab 10.1 is out. I keep reading everywhere that xoom isnt optimized like it should be. That vr543mp is amazing. **** the ipad im waiting for ngp lol

Are you in denial that that Ipad2 is still better for now? Like it or not apple has been on the cutting edge in terms of portable media. I am not sure how old you are (and i don't want to base it off of your post) but if you get a chance apply to apple and take a tour of their facilities. They have very talented help so its not surprising that they can come up with such efficient designs.
I maybe mistaken, but the epic was the first phone out that actually had higher specs then the iphone. I love my phone and after 2.2 with EXT4 my phone is everything i want it to be. Waiting 6 months for it is not my cup of tea though.
I don't like apple for my own reasons. Before this amazing phone I have called the epic I owned the iphone 2g 3g and 3gs. I was an apple head. Not a blind one... but I the time I knew there was nothing better. But fast forward a few years and I have the perfect phone for my everyday needs. No idevice will ever give me this level of freedom. After android every idevice I touch just feels like a toy. Im a power user. There's no such thing as a power user on an idevice. This isnt the reason why I hate apple though. I don't like apple because theyve single handedly made america stupider at electronics. I know poeple that have iphones that couldn't find they're way around a pc for their lives. Half these people don't even know how to use itunes properly.
you know what, based on your logic i completely agree with you lol.
Very good arguments!
I have not owed anything apple except a ipad that i bring into cleanrooms with me. I sure hope there is a all aluminum android 3.0 tab coming in the future. If there are designers out there a cleanroom compatible tablet is better then cleanroom paper and we would buy in bulk.

Believe me, every computing company wants to make people "stupider" at computing. The only way to make people "stupider" is to make what they want to do simple and intuitive. Apple is amazing in that regard. The reason they market their devices as "magical" are because the things they accomplish with their device truly are "magical" to the people using them.
Take Airplay for example. Its simple DLNA as we all know, but could you imagine trying to explain to your parents or grandparents how to set up and use DLNA? I am VERY technically inclined and I gave up trying to get Allshare to work with my Xbox360 a long time ago. Compare that to the Apple experience where you have an ipad and an Apple TV, you tap a button and tap Apple TV and magically your video is playing on your TV. Thats what people want. They dont care how its working as long as it just works.

Yep I only have 7 years under my belt, because of that I have no clue what will be next.....next is sept 2012 lol.... it wont be an sgs2 unless I really have to have it and can shell out the extra 75 bucks in nov. I know for sure I made a good choice tho, my epic will still stand tall for another 12+ months, I'm enjoying the ride anyhow.
Side note, I'm not so sure the mali400 gpu that's in the sgs2 is anything great, unless its only running one gpu core at the moment, which means samsung will have to update it later....cough never. I want a phone with a powerful gpu and am hoping for sgx-543 or better.

For me it depends if we get the sexy thin version I keep seeing or a softer cartoonish body like the Epic. I don't want a hard keyboard or the thicker shell that comes with it. I want a gorgeous phone next time. The Epic is already plenty functional so only sexy AND functional will ever get me to upgrade.
..But I'll still have a year in my contract by the time it comes out

I totally agree. Samsung would have hit a homerun with the Epic had they given it some harder corners and a little more heft but if the GSII comes in some professional packaging I may seriously consider it.
The dual core processor isn't going to make it that much speedier. Sure it will let you listen to music, browse the web, and play games at the same time. But actual game performance won't be that much improved. Just as it was with PCs and multiple cores.
Not Getting the GS2 AT ALL!!
im Getting the Evo 3D
why you ask? Looks like neither will have keyboards and the Evo gets all the Dev love.
Plus 1.2 Dual core ... i don't need more than that these processors are sooo overclockable its crazy...
Also i think alot of people will never buy Samsung again so its Dev community will even be smaller....
My current Hummingbird is handling everything fine. I'd just like a more attractive form and a larger screen. I'm a fan of face tablet phones I think 4.3" is the sweet spot.

Name the era. Of course a 2010 2.1ghz is going to blow away a 2006 2.1ghz. The refinement isn't the cores, but how much the processor can do with a single clock.
2006 dual cores were no faster than 2006 single cores, except for multi-tasking.
Just as quad cores in 2009-2010 had little benefit over their dual core counterparts, unless you are doing video encoding or 3d rendering via blender or maya.

you'll barely notice the speed difference in the Evo3d or The GS2 compared to the Epic right now... but it will make a HUGE difference overall like the battery life and other thingys
Here's a preview of the international version of the Galaxy S II. The 8 megapixel camera is the best they have ever seen and can record 1080p video with full 30 fps! I hope for the Sprint version they leave out the keyboard and put in an even bigger battery (already a solid 1650mah). I'll take this over the HTC Evo 3d. 3d is such a silly gimmick.
The Nexus is tempting (as was Nexus S). But I'm going to stick with my good old Evo 4G. When it came out, it was the 1st superphone and so far ahead of its time that its still not outdated. My phone does everything I need and ICS will breathe new life into it. I don't think any of the new dual core phones are that much better.
My next upgrade will be to a 28mm SoC with integrated LTE that finally gives decent battery life on 4G.
I'm with you, but i do find it very hard not to get sucked into all of the constant hype around here. It is also tough when the devs you like start moving and you feel like you should follow with them. The EVO is still a great phone

Not outdated? Are you joking?
*Weak, single core processor. Dual core procs perform better. Period.
*Terrible, god awful graphics processor. Can't play any decent 3D games properly.
*Weak camera
*Terrible battery
*Average/Below average screen. Blacks aren't really black, resolution is low.
The Evo was(is?) a nice phone, but saying that it isn't outdated is a straight-up lie.
I was just thinking the same thing...the evo has been the one phone that I haven't gotten bored with even though I've had it since July of last year It was much more fun on Sprint but even on Metro (to save money) it's still a great device.

I have had mine since almost release day and with MikG ROMs, it runs great for everything I want to do. The dual 1.2 might be faster but not that much faster for what I use it for. I can email, text and watch Netflix on it. Ohe yeah, i make calls too! What should a smart phone do?
I will look at the real HTC EVO2 when it comes out but until them, I will keep my EVO!
I use my Evo every day despite having numerous more advanced devices. Mostly as a hotspot. But after using lots of dual core devices, man....you're clueless if you really think the dual cores aren't a massive upgrade. Evo was a bomb phone at the time, but at the rate tech advances....using my Evo the same day as my G2x or EpicTouch is painful. Every single interaction is slow as hell.
But it definitely holds a place in my heart and is definitely my overall fav of the phones I've own(ed).
Without the Evo, we wouldn't have the 4"+ size as the minimum standard for smartphones, 4G and so much else which is now common. Also it is one of the best supported phones in the dev community, and will be for a while. I can't wait to see what ICS will look like on it.
There is a night and day difference between a stock Evo and a rooted one with a nice Aosp rom like decks/Miui. I honestly don't feel like its slow and I use it for a ton of stuff, except 3d games.
For 99% of people, its more phone than they need, even today. That is not outdated. Not everyone wants to buy the top of the line greatest device, right?
Question for people who moved on - did you notice better reception, gps, or battery life? Besides performance, that's what matters most.
Even though part of me really wants a new phone, for most things, I am satisfied with the EVO.
Part of me kind of wants to wait for mid next year in order to really appreciate the upgrade from my EVO to what will likely be a quad-core beast......imagine the jump in speed upgrading from a single-core to quad, heh.
The Evo is way outdated in the numbers game, but it does everything I need and has a sweet kickstand.
This was also the first and likely only smart phone to wow me. When I first got into smart phones I had my G1 and was familiar with other devices like iPhone but the Evo blew me away the first time I saw one.
My only reason to upgrade was to not lose my upgrade. I bought a phone that I know will sell for big dollars.
I sort of like it now...it's a great phone for when I don't have time to screw with android.
The Evo is far from outdated. Despite it's age, it's hardware is still more than competent.
Yes, new CPUs may have improved instruction sets and/or optimizations to take advantage of, but the Snapdragon in the Evo is still hearty enough to run Android just fine. Although the Adreno 200 GPU is not a monster in the 3D department, it still leverages more than enough for almost any application, including most games.
Ice Cream Sandwich will take advantage of hardware acceleration, which will get more from the Adreno 200 than we ever have before, and should actually make Android run faster and be less CPU-intensive than previous iterations of Android.
The EVO, although dated, is still a strong device. Sure, we all have a desire to upgrade, and if you don't want the Galaxy Nexus you're lying--but honestly, there is little real reason to upgrade. ICS is going to run like a top on the Evo, and reinvigorate most user's experiences with their devices.
The EVO was my first smartphone, and I can say im probably gonna hang onto it for a while more. It does everything I need!

Until Sprint launches the upcoming Nexus, I'm happy because of two words: Boot Manager. I have five ROMs that I flow through... Can't beat it.

When I buy a new phone, the decision is not 'is this better than my current phone?'. It's 'is this phone good enough to last the next 2 years?'.
Evo passed that test. The Nexus does not. esp not at the $300 price point.
Really at a conundrum though. I love the development of HTC phones. The Nexus intrigues me, but the lack of ROM development for Nexus phones (outside of Cyanogen variants and Miui) makes me wonder if I will get bored.

I would miss my EVO a lot when it comes time to upgrade. Gonna hang out as long as I can. The EVO design isn't too much of an upgrade in my opinion, the EVO 3d really catches my eye but the 3d would just be a novelty played out quickly. The photon is wierdly shaped lol and the epic touch is too thin in my opinion. Just my opinion, don't flame me but I feel like I would break it in my hands.
I'm personally gonna wait to see if HTC releases anything else exciting since I'm not due for an upgrade for another year anyways.

While the processor is only a single core, it still flies in my book. Waiting for a quad core phone... Whew.
The GPU may not be the best, but it does what I ask of it, and that's what matters. I haven't had any problems with 3D.
I'm still amazed by the fact that they put an 8 MP camera in a phone.
The battery life only sucks if you leave it completely stock and don't root it. Find the right ROM and kernel and battery life is dramatically increased.
The HVGA display is plenty of resolution for a phone. My blacks are black and my colors are bright...
I have a question for you...are you sure we're taking about the same phone? Because I'm pretty sure I'm in an EVO 4G thread.
