I finally managed to upgrade SGS firmware through Kies because I found a solution on how to connect Kies to Samsung Galaxy S. The solution is quite long though, but the end result is worth it. I now can connect Kies to SGS successfully all the time.
I live in Indonesia, bought the phone from a gadgets store. The phone is unlocked/sim free/unbranded.
The original firmware code (dial *#1234#):
PDA: I9000DXJF4
Phone: Unknown <-- what the ??
CSC: I9000OLBJF4
And this is what I've done:
Downloading and installing Kies from Australia instead of Indonesia. The version number is higher 1.5.1.10083. The important 64-bit drivers already included. Installed smoothly on Windows 7 Ultimate 64-bit, but had driver problem in Windows Vista Home 32-bit. I don't bother to try to reinstall Kies in Vista again though, so I don't know if this version is really not working in Vista 32-bit. UPDATE: This version is working in Vista 32-bit and Win7 64-bit!
Press/dial *#272*HhMm# (Hh and Mm is hour and minute in 24H format, 2 digits) then select the code from the list equal to "Sales Code" at the top, which is XSE (Indonesia), and press Install. Warning, this step will erase the internal SD card. Make backup first if you must.
After the installation from step two is completed, the phone will reboot itself. To make sure that everything is still working (no more downloaded Applications or Contacts though, everything was wiped out), I did reboot the phone once again. The phone works normally. But my phone type was still "Unknown" at this point.
Without changing any setting in the phone and Kies, I connect the USB to the phone, Kies fired up automatically, and voila! My phone was detected, and Kies also gave me a notification that a new firmware is available (I9000DXJG4). So, I downloaded and applied the firmware.
New firmware installed successfully. Works better and faster/smoother than DXJF4. GPS is much better now. Love it. Dial *#1234# gives me this now:
PDA: I9000DXJG4
Phone: I9000DXJG4 <-- yay!
CSC: I9000OLBJG4
In this firmware, Samsung also includes an application/widget called "Task Manager", which is pretty much like those "Task Killer" apps in the market.
And now, The Buts!
YouTube (APK) is not working. In JF4 it worked well.
Android Market now can't download every item I selected, but it can show the list normally. I did login successfully using my Google account.
Samsung Kies detected the phone but now giving me this warning "The SIM card is not inserted, can continue communication". The SIM card is inside the phone!
Samsung Kies really gives me a headache, literally. Old problems fixed, new problems arise. Anyone knows how to solve that three problems? Please?
Or, should I redo the *#272*HhMm# procedure once again after installing the new firmware?
Did some experiment and it was a success.
So, I did a Factory Reset. All caches and some data are gone, but all downloaded applications and contacts are still intact. YouTube (APK) is now working and I can access Android Market again. The big downside: My phone type is back to "Unknown"!
Next, I dialed *#272*HhMm# again, let the phone reboot and setting up itself. And voila! The phone type is back to normal again "I9000DXJG4".
YouTube app and Android Market is still working normally. I haven't try to connect the phone to Kies though.
I read somewhere in xda-developer forum that after upgrading (and downgrading maybe?) the phone firmware you need to do a Factory Reset first, so you need to backup your data before upgrading/downgrading.
I think that's the answer of my question above. And dialing *#272... completes the whole process in my case.
My impression of JG4? It's fast and responsive. It's a great piece of firmware.
KIES recognize Galaxy S without problem!
Well, the fix I've listed above work very, very well!
Kies now will recognize the phone correctly. And I can make backup of my contacts or upgrading the firmware through Kies.
I'm very happy with Samsung Galaxy S and Kies now!
awright. gotta try this trick )

Hello there!
I have written the guide above in this website: http://lintascafe.com/2010/09/14/ulasan-samsung-galaxy-s-part-2/

were u able to use 3 button combo after that?
My fix
Whenever my SGS is no longer seen by Kies (Win7 x64):
Close Kies and the tray icon
Stop Kies mode on the phone
Disconnect phone
Connect phone
Put phone in Kies mode
Wait for Win7 to settle
Go into Windows Device Manager
Delete the phone from "Mobile Devices" (you may even see it with an "!" icon which is what put me onto this method)
Stop Kies mode on the phone
Disconnect phone
Run Kies
Connect phone
Put phone in Kies mode
Windows then re-detects the phone and after a short while so does Kies.
Hasn't failed yet.

Lucky for me, the 3 button combo problem is not an issue for my hardware. Before I finally "found" those steps above, I once used a 3 button combo step to fix KIES problem as said in this forum or other forum, I forgot.
The 3 button combo problem is related to defective hardware rather than firmware I guess.

From my experience, whenever KIES can't detect my SGS, it also means that the IMEI number in my SGS is gone and listed as Unknown. KIES needs IMEI number to be present.
The source of my IMEI problem is quite surprising: the One Click Lag Fix. Whenever OCLF is activated, IMEI number is listed as Unknown, and KIES can't find the phone, and vice versa.
However, I'm quite sure that my problem with OCLF and the missing IMEI number is not a common problem, because there were no reports about this in XDA forums.

Hi guys, does anybody have problem connecting to samsung kies app? My kies does not recognize my galaxy s when trying by cable or bluetooth, and when connecting by bluetooth I only can choose between win mobile or symbian device.
Anybody could suggest advice? It'd be very thankfull.
Cheers

I hade problems even installing that useless program. Samsung must be ashamed for that "thing". Just dont use it.
Oh I see.
So what is the way of updating official firmware? I realize it's a noob question.

I'm a noob here too
I have learned through reading other posts though so here it is:
You don't need to have Kies recognise your phone to install firmware. You just need to have the drivers for your phone installed. Easiest way to do that is install Kies. It will automaticaly install the drivers. Whether Kies recognises your phone is irrelevant.
You basicaly can find all you need to flash official firmware at h t t p ://samsung-firmware.webs.com/samsungi9000.htm. There are also instructions on how to do it in the page. I also think there is a thread here with instructions but you will have to search for that yourself
Before you do anything I would suggest reading h t t p ://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=723596&highlight=big+faq
One other thing is that I have not been able to make flashing with Odin work on my Win7 laptop. Thank god I still have WinXP SP3 on my desktop.
And sorry for the web pages not being linked. Noob users like me can't post links
So far no problem connecting for me. I am. Using win 7 ultimate.

Firstly the firmware on Samsung Firmware website is leaked firmware and is not official releases. So some of the firmware can be at a stage less then optimal. Just making sure you have all the facts.
Secondly you might be able to resolve your Kies problem by downloading the latest Kies, installing, connecting to your phone. If no luck then remove your SD card and try again. If no good then format your internal SD drive and try again ensuring you have backed up your data first to the SD card.
This has been found to resolve most Kies issues and enabled people to reconnect with Kies.
Wish you luck with it.

I just tried to install the latest version of Kies at work, wow was that worse than my original Kies install (the version just prior).
I got the same message I read about "no internet connection, try to connect again" or whatever, but I just blew through it and hit retry every time it popped up (probably about 35 times for just 84KB). So, anyways, I'm at 84KB out of 81KB (yes, you read that correct) and this method no longer worked, I had already disabled my firewall because I read something about that a while ago, but that didn't help here. So, giving up I hit "no", well Kies worked fine after that and my phone connected to it...
the install...sucked...tho...
I too had trouble using the latest Kies, just refused to see the phone connected, but I could use mass storage mode with no trouble...
Fix for me was to stop Launcher Pro and re set TWLauncher as default Home, then connect phone to PC and slect Kies mode, this worked a treat and Kies detected my phone straight away?
So If you are using a third party Home app, try using the TWLauncher as default Before connecting to PC...?
I had a lot of problems with Kies before. But after lates upgrade (2-3 days ago) i have 10 on 10 with success. I am on Win 7 Ultimate x64 and Windows XP pro SP3 at work.
I took of adw and kies worked fine for me.

The latest Kies is available as an executable download on the Samsung Firmware Website you only had to download this and install mate.
At least you have a working Kies now.
Yeah I installed kies just yesterday and it took for ages to install it.i I'll try the stuff you guys advised, thank you so much for all the help. I'll let know if i was successful.

Hi All!
I've a strange problem connecting to Kies. When i connect the phone and select kies modus the mtp program tries to initialize and crashes. This happens in a loop and this happens even, when i connect it to plain linux (my windows runs in a VM). ATM i m using Samset 1.9c but it happens with stockjm5, too. any ideas?
Just posted up on the themes and apps page, but basically with windows 7 64 Bit it is terrible, hardly ever connects.
On my 32 bit desktop I can at least connect most of the time, but your constantly having to pull in and out the usb cable.
It crashes, syncing with outlook is buggy and clunky...
This really lets the whole galaxy experience down for me, love the device to bits, but connecting to the PC is a pain
I tried everything
nothing seem to work for me
are there other ways to update the phone? like OTA?
Have you installed the most recent version of Kies.?
Have you removed the SD card form the Galaxy S?
Have you formated your internal SD drive on the Galaxy ensuring you have a backup of your data.?
These steps all seem to fix most problems with Kies. Has for me, has for a lot of people.
Also Kies does not like Debug mode nor does it like Mass storage device so ensure these are off on the phone.
Hey guys.. Kies only work with the default launcher... I don't know why, but the MTP application don't work if you have other launcher (like ADW.Launcher). Try to come back to the original and be sure that you are at home before connect the phone in order to get the MTP Application windows on focus...
deleting ADW and restarted the phone and the pc that was the only way... whats the last firmware? I havent had a firmware update yet:S
Hi
I have no problems connecting to Kies, if i reboot the the phone and then connect.
You don't need to delete ADW... only switch to default launcher..
Hi,
I am attempting the Froyo update on Vibrant through Kies Mini following the T-Mobile Instructions at the following location provuded by twitter account galaxyssupport
I am able to download and install Kies Mini successfully. The drivers seems to be correctly installed because Windows 7 or Windows Vista is able recognize the device. At Stage 3 as instructed I open Kies Mini. It asks me to connect my Vibrant to the computer. I complete this step and that is it. Kies Mini is not able to recognize that the Vibrant has been plugged into the computer though Windows is able to.
I tried this on three different laptops Windows 7 64 Bit and 2 different Windows Vista 32-bit. All to the same result. After going through some of the forums, I set the USB debugging mode on on my Vibrant and connected the device to the computer. On all the three laptops the Kies Mini Crashed with the following error "MiniApplication Launcher has stopped Working".
BTW I even tried by removing my SD card as some forums suggest. No luck
Anyone who has gone though similar troubles and could come up with a solution to get Froyo on Vibrant.
I called T-Mobile they said it is Samsung's problem and then I called Samsung. The CSR who picked up the call asked me few mundane questions some of them same questions repeatedly. Then she said she will connect me to an high level support and WOW that Number does not work and the call ended with the message "EXITING THE SYSTEM" !!!! Samsung and T-Mobile is a dead end now.
Any help would be greatly appreciated.
Thanks & Regards,
TMax
Mini Kies wont recognize it with USB Debug on...it has to be off and try running it as administrator, with the stock TWLauncher..not LauncherPro, Zeam, or anything like that or you'll get a "Need idle screen warning" if your using one of those.
I'm having the same issue... i've did a factory reset... removed sd card... tried debug on and off... Still nothing. keeps showing "Unregistered Device"
You could just learn ODIN (not hard) and ODIN to this.

That'll be the same as getting it via mini kies.

Damn, I have the same problem here.
Using TWLauncher (cleared Zeam defaults), not on debug mode...
I had the same problem. I was using a very thin gage usb cable. I then switched to a heavy gage cable and it worked just fine. Give that a shot.

I'm using the original cable. Got back to home (TW Launcher) and it worked.
I've spent a bunch of time on the phone with T-Mobile and Samsung; 7 hours. I believe the issue is with the KA2 update that was released a couple of days before the KA6. Neither Level 3 reps knew anything about it and kept referencing JI6. Used both Mini Kies received an unregistered device error (I registered my device through Samsung) and used the full version of Kies 1.5.1.1 and it said my firmware version was not available for an update. Use Odin it works and took about 5 to 10 minutes and I didn't lose my user preferences, apps, contacts, etc. Everything works great even GPS.
Ahhh
I am not a techy in any sense of the word so I have been waiting for the official release of 2.2 instead of rooting, because I'm scared ******** to try it. Now release date rolls around, finally, and I can't seem to get it to work. I am having the same issue, well first it was the 16 character file extension issue, but now it is this. My phone is plugged in, Kies is up and running, in my computer it shows my phone, by name, but no update. I have NO idea what so ever what usb "debugging," "touchwiz," or anything of the sort. Hell I am proud of myself for knowing what rooting is. Is there anyone who can help me get froyo on my phone?
A TURKISH MAN CAN SOLVE!
Problem:
When I connect device to computer, update notification appears for 2.2.1. However, when I click on update after skipping or non-skipping backup, device disconnects and notification appears that device not connected. Then, clicking on OK update process ends but my galaxy s is connected to KIES. I tried numerous times.
Full error message: Firmware update stopped because GT-I9000 has been disconnected. Please check the connection and try again.
I tried those:
Updating KIES
Hard reset device
Uninstall & reinstall KIES
Open KIES as admin
Open KIES in compatibility mode
Restart phone
I also tried Win7 32 bit,XP and XP virtual PC
Alcohol cleaning of all ports
Solution:
Go to your control panel, find region and keyboard settings. Then make all your settings as English (U.S.A). At last tab, computer will restart. Open Kies as admin and in compatibility tab select windows xp service pack 3. Update will be found as usual. Go for it. Your connection will be lost but the firmware is downloading this time. Update will be finished without no problem.
Thank me in advance because it will definitely work
It works also for Bada.
Photographs are in Turkish because Turkish people solve this problem with hard work. However, you can figure out from the context.

I am not underestimating other solutions. I truly believe other solutions still apply to those including driver install/reinstall, admin mode, compatibility mode, using win7 32 bit or XP, cleaning with alcohol etc.

That is correct
I haven't updated my phone for quite a while, the last update I did was a camera update ages ago.
A few weeks ago I tried to do a firmware update and it failed, so I let it be, but now I really want to update it because it's bugging me.
I just updated Kies.
The current firmware version is: PDA:KE7 / PHONE:KE4 / CSC:KD1 (XEU)
It wants to update me to: :KF3 / :KE7 / KD1 (XEU)
I have no idea what that means, by the way.
I hit next, and yes, and choose not to backup, and tick that box, and then it loses the connection and tells me again 'OH HAI! You can update your phone!' and I'm stuck in a loop.
I'm on Windows 7 on a laptop, I'm in Australia, I bought my phone pretty early on, from the UK. Have not done (and see no reason to do) any rooting or other stuff like that.
Please help?
Make sure the Drivers are correctly installed and you don't have a MTP Error when you connect.
Regards.
How do I know if they're correctly installed or not?
How do know if I have an MTP error? Nothing has come to me saying 'I'm an MTP error!' do I have to go looking for it?
Just Uninstall them from CP and Reinstall them. MTP device error pops up when you connect your device, if you don't have one I guess you are OK with that part.
Regards.
Kies suck! Install stock 2.3.4 jvr ot doesn't requires root amd all that stuff!

Make sure your phone is fully charged - I mean 100%.
I've had Kies flake out on me like that (with no error message or anything) because the phone's battery was only at like 97%.
Very annoying
So here's my problem. I have a Rogers 900W8 and I've played around with it. I rooted it with Phiztouch, flashed Fusion and Gapps and didn't like it. Flashed back to OEM and no issue. Tried installing a stripped down version of Lollipop and found it had issues so I gave up and decided to flash back to OEM. My OEM software is from Sams and now my background apps are Bell on the second round. WTF?? I've downloaded every "roger" labeled file from Sams and everyone flashes the same. (via ODIN of course). The only reason I care is because I still have a credit on my Suretap sim card I want to use and now it won't acknowledge it. Help please

Keep it simple, use the Kies software, put your phone in Download mode, connect to PC/Mac, and then select under tools, emergency firmware recovery. Should go ahead and restore phone to original rogers state.
I tried you suggestion, didn't work. It won't let me attempt anything
So I played around and figured out how to get Kies3 to do the emergency software install. Turns out it was my old laptop having a software issue with 32bit windows.... my wifes newer laptop worked perfectly.
Now, I've done process and seen the issue. When Kies sees my software it clearly identifies Bell as the carrier specific. When I start the firmware install, by serial number.... It shows that RWC is now selected to install. Following thorough, the software gets downloaded and installed and It's still Bell..... WTF? When I plug back in to Kies to confirm, sure enough.... BMC pops up. Am I missing a step? Like a battery pull at a key moment?

Download the oldest rogers firmware there is ..after installing it go to the dialer and type in *#272*imei# then select rwc then phone will do a factory reset then you will have rogers apps then just do the over the the air update via wifi.
Hope that helps!!
