ok i took three shots, one at midday with the sun fully beaming, one at the time where the sun was going down and than finally one at night. each was a picture of the same thing (my work/metro health hospital) and in the same parking spot. i will label above the picture what time of the day it was as well as what phone captured it. without further ado, here we go! (PS: you can easily tell which one is the winner just by graininess)

Evo Night
Epic Night (haha that sounds like a title of a get laid movie  )
evo definately wins this.. Im impressed. but the epic isnt bad.. definately not as sharp as the evo but that could be because of the 3mp difference in the cameras. But maybe its me but i feel like the epic camera takes a better night shot
I think the Epic looks better... not sure what ^ this guy is thinking, but the Epic clearly looks more realistic and has a better night shot.

Oh God yes. The Epic looks sooooo much more natural. You can see the famous over saturation going on in the EVO pictures. Those blues look so fake. I would say they are a tie at night... I don't like either of them there.
Did u really sit in your car all day and take pictures with your phones lol?
You know what, I today was offered a trade. A trade for the evo again, what held me back was the amazing and natural feel the EPIC provides. The EVO IS over saturated and i am yet to see a video as good as the epic, and yes this is with the 3mp less, so what an amazing feat from samsung! I love how the ceo stated, its all in the software and how its used.
I am still sitting on debate, why i don't know maybe the 4.3 inch screen. Yet, this 4.0 is so much better. Ah..
Sent From The Moon
I concur. The EVO looks completely over-saturated. Anyone who knows photography or picture dynamics can tell you that the pictures comparisons above prove that the Epic takes more natural looking pictures. All it is is an over-compensation on the part of HTC to attempt to balance out the quality of their almost always horrible cameras. And for the record; More megapixels does not always mean a better picture.
+1 for the Epic's camera.

+1 except for night shot.
In that shot EVO looks to give more detail on building windows etc catching night refection light better
I've compared both as well and the epic pics are more real and close 2 life like colors.
Sent from my SPH-D700 using XDA App
Actually the night shot is definitely better on the Epic..it is true that you can see more stuff in the EVO picture...but notice the weird unnatural brightness...also look at the closer lamp post one epic you can see the lens flare and light as it should be..on EVO its completely bland with no light depth...
Whats happening is Epic is achieving closer blacks as EVO is trying to compensate visualization by highlighting everything..
Look at the mirror glass...notice in the epic the rim stays the same color in all the pics, on the night pic the rim completely changes color..not to mention the epic shows an actual reflection there..unlike the EVO which completely fails due to the highlighting.
On the other pics yes, EVO seems to have more detail..it may be due to he 3 mp or it may be due to Epic compressing the image. The colors though on EVO are WAY off though...
I've owned both the Epic and Evo. In my opinion, the Evo was worthless as a camera. The quality is was inconsistent and the flash blew out the quality.
The Epic on the other hand is one of the better cameras I've seen on a phone. I used the Panoramic feature on it last weekend and it worked great. Definitely more feature rich in terms of camera, and the quality seems to be more consistent.
Guys, just because you have more MP does not mean the picture will be better quality. Just bigger. And I challenge you to take 720p video with the two.... the Epic will blow your minds. The EVO has horrible compression and going from low to high light the evo stays with the lower frame rate where the epic adjusts. Plain and simple the Epic destroys the evo in video.

i have to weigh in on this topic. I am a big user of phone cameras. I have toyed with photography for over a decade and have been looking for a decent camera phone for a long time. That is why i still kept an LG Renior around. I have my wife use it even though she doesn't use the camera. But when i need a good photo, i just ask for her phone.
Anyhow, i had the Evo and found that I could only get so so pictures with it. Mostly it had to do with software. On the Galaxy S I was able to get great photos. It rivals the Renoir. I know none of these phones have a camera worth ditching my canon's for, but still nice to have around when i need it. The guy who took these photos should set both to night mode. And the ISO's to the lowest possible setting. When i take galaxy photos at night at 100 ISO, they are not grainy. your subject needs to be still, but in those photos, the subject was static.
To me, i'd rate the galaxy about an 8 as far as camera phones go. I'd rate the EVO a 5.
Does the epic have night mode? If so the night shot should have looked better.

I went and swapped out the Evo for an Epic recently. So this isn't biased in any way since I do have the Epic, but the Evo takes some amazing photos. 90% or better are not oversaturated. There are certain photos that do feel bluish, but i took over 300 - 400 photos of my baby girl and the photos look crystal clear with very realistic color. The photos rival those of my 10 Megapixel DSL camera. I have to give this to the Evo. I haven't taken nearly as many photos with the Epic yet, but the 3 MP makes a huge difference on the photos. Everyone is entitled to their own opinion on this, but I can't justify 3 MP less and hundreds of photos that prove me otherwise, just to feel better about the epic. I love this phone anyways so I'm not complaining, but that is the one thing the Evo just wins in my opinion and I personally can't argue it.

you mean dslr? there is no way the evo or any cellphone comes even close to the quality of a dslr, and if you knew anything about photography, you would know that more megapixels (more often than not) does not equate to better picture quality.

I know, I may be crazy but I'm thinking about swapping my EVO for an Epic 4G now. It'd be an even swap, so I wouldn't have to pay or anything. I know other Galaxy phones are going to come out, and maybe even soon, but I'd imagine they would cost more with no contract and my upgrade isn't due until August anyway.
I take a lot of photos and videos on my phone and I've come to realize that the EVO just doesn't do a great job of videos, it's Ok when it comes to photos.
So I have a few questions. Is the leaked froyo update good enough to run as a ROM with EVERYTHING working? Being on EVO 2.2 since August, pretty much can't go back to 2.1. Do you think Samsung will release 2.2 officially soon? And how is the camera for stills and videos?
While I can't comment on if official froyo is coming soon I can say that the current dk28 leaks are stable daily drivers. I've run all of the froyo leaks and this is much more stable and easily a daily driver. You would have no issues immediately going to froyo. The epic is a great phone and I don't think you'll be disappointed.

So I'm not entirely understanding your comment about picture quality. 8 megapixels vs. 5 megapixels. One would assume 8 wins over 5 in this situation.
Who knows when the official froyo update will come, but DK28 worked well for me so I'm not too worried about it. No problems at all. I think the camera is excellent for a phone. A few sites have threads full of examples, like this one: http://forum.androidcentral.com/sprint-epic-4g/32332-epic-photography.html The video is good enough to replace my little HD digital camcorder. It's obviously not going to be as good as a real HD camcorder, but it's more than adequete for home movies and whatnot.
picture quality is more about the lens than megapixels. i don't know what it is about htc's cameras but they all pretty much suck. i haven't seen a phone take better pictures than the epic does
I recently jumped from the Evo to the Epic as well and am glad I did. It will be at least summer before any new "super phones" appear on Sprint (my guess) and you will be much happier with the Epic's speed while you wait for your next phone.
Epic beats the Evo in every way except GPS which is usable but slower/less accurate on Epic.
Edit: I found the Epic's camera to be better than the Evo - make sure you go into the settings and turn on "anti-shake" right away as it helps a lot.

One would Assume that because 8mp is a bigger # then 5mp its automatically better right? Wrong, and that's why i don't just assume things, i have 2 see them both 4 myself... The Epic camera takes better quality photos then the EVO Period.
I am by no means a photographer but this is a picture taken by me on a hunting trip this past October in Arizona, Note the quality of THIS 5mp Camera

i think i will have the epic for a day or so before i get rid of the EVO, so I do plan on doing this.
I am in a similar position.
I am STILL using a TP2, and was waiting for the Shift 4G's release to make a decision.
I don't know whether to let my company both activate a line and buy an Epic for me now.
Or, continue paying for my personal TP2 bill out of my own pocket and wait for the new dual cores before accepting the line and phone from my company.
Any advice ???

Compare a kodak 8 mp to a nikon 5 mp and you'll see why higher mp are not an indication of a better camera.
From a phone
Epic uses a cmos sensor similar or same as on Iphone 4. Also known to have better video and picture image quality than EVO, especially under low light conditions which EVO's sensor struggles at.
Article - http://www.phonearena.com/reviews/S...DROID-X---the-camera-comparison_id2532/page/7
Video - http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=JGKdgTuhpS0
Not trying to be a fanboy but Iphone 4's camera and screen are the kings ATM and the 5mp vs. 8mp debate is irrelevant.
FYI... with the upcoming release of HTC Swift, Epic just dropped -$50.

Wow, your lack of knowledge is clearly evident here just by seeing you point to megapixels vs quality of sensor (no offense ). Anyone who knows both the Evo and Epic will tell you that the Epic's 5MP sensor takes BETTER pictures than the Evo's 8MP sensor.
Has little to do with teh megapizzellss but rather the quality of the sensor. Also anyone who knows about cameras will tell you the same as well.
Get the Epic
I just replaced my EVO with an Epic and have never been happier.
The Screen just feels awesome and the keyboard is wicked.
It also is wayyy faster but I will say one thing. Coming from the Evo, the Epic and Evo have the same Camera quality. Epic FFC wins because it performs better in low light conditions, but the rear camera quality is about the same.
From what I've read online in comparison tests, the Evo pics are rated lower than the Epic. I don't remember but I think the Epic uses better hardware
Well you may be right, but from my personal point of view..... their cameras' are the same
To add on to others comments about camera quality if your camera has a crappy white balance etc. it just doesn't matter. Megapixels only matter anyway if you intend to make large prints or do some serious editing both of which I doubt you would use an phone to take pictures for.
My point is sensor quality more important than snazzy numbers.
Hey guys,
Im composing this thread to include as the title states, pictures taken from the Xoom's camera VS pictures taken from other devices (IE. other tabs, phones or cameras.) With that i'll be posting pictures taken from my Xoom 5MP, Droid Incredible 8MP, and FujiFilm Finepix S1500 10MP. WIth that, all devices settings will be on auto detect, set to default. This will be ongoing and others are welcome to join in, just post the specs of your other devices to form a baseline and keep images no bigger than 1024x768.
As some had stated earlier in other posts, the few second review of the photo taken on the Xoom does not do the image justice at all. Its not until its transfered to desktop that I can see the true detail.

Thanks, yeah the zoom on the Xoom is a bit disappointing but im hoping to get some video as well although I don't have an HD device to compare and also front camera as well.. One thing I wish was included is the ISO settings. I love that on my Incredible I can turn the ISO up and down depending on what im shooting.
And thanks for noticing the street hah
Placeholder for some more comparison shots tomorrow.
I am very disappointed in the Xoom's camera. I scheduled a photo shoot yesterday, and rather than using my Nikon D700 with 24-70 2.8 Nikkor Lens, I figured, hey, my tablet computer has a camera on it, I'll just use that.
Sorry, but that tiny little chip on the back of my tablet just can't keep up with my dSLR.
Seriously, other than annoying friends/family by secretly videotaping them drunk while you innocently play on your tablet, what's the purpose of the back camera?
Come to think of it... that is an excellent reason to have a camera there.

The resolution a digital camera does not necessarily indicate the picture quality. For example a 6mp DSLR is far superior to a 12mp point and shoot or a phone camera.

Yes, I actually thought a little chip slapped on the back of an $800 tablet could compete with a $4k camera rig. Why couldn't it?

Thank you for this comparison. I have a Xoom and a Droid 1. I definitely can tell a quality difference with the Xoom. It is much better especially with flash.
Just visited a Carphone Warehouse store (UK) and noticed they have a plethora of tablets on display. 1 that caught my attention was the Asus Transformer, since I was considering getting this or the Xoom, but I went for the Xoom instead.
So I had a go at the Transformer (minus the keyboard), performance felt pretty much the same as Xoom... until I played with its camera... Good grief that thing's camera is miles better than the Xoom's. It's so clear, sharp, and responsive, actually surprised me. Then I quickly went to play with the Xoom, because I don't remember my Xoom has thos qualities... and yep... blurry, slower, quality like 1 MPx camera... yuck. I never realized how bad the Xoom camera is compared to a cheaper Tegra 2 tablet! Do you think Moto/Google can improve Xoom's camera by soft update? Or is Xoom's camera hardware is just utter crap?
Some comments from a serious photographer...
You will find much better results if you export the Xoom pics to a proper PC and use a good photo editing application to process. I use Photoshop CS5 and use some sharpening and other parameter adjustments to get very good results. The zoom function of the camera is an electronic zoom and will never be as good as just getting closer. Also, just look at the size of the camera lens and compare it to your point-and-shoot or DSLR. It will never get as good pictures as a dedicated camera.
Added: The camera apps on the Xoom cannot compete with a proper application on a PC or Mac to achieve good pictures

Quick thought...
The first photos I took with my Xoom looked soft and blurry. Cleaned the lens (full of fingerprints) and from then on the photos were sharp.
I am not happy either but it seems that 4S is really the best that you can buy in mobile phone when it comes to camera.

Yep, they did it again. I wonder why OEMs don't try to make better cameras with good lenses on Android devices...

Megapixels are not important at all, iPhone 4S has Sony camera and yet SE can not come close to iPhone camera in mobile phones, I really dont get it, they at Samsung should buy 10 iPhones and then try everything to make somethin better in camera department and also in housing quality, sometimes I think that people in Samsung have never seen iPhone in person or felt how it feels in hands with that perfect quality.
Not so fast.. They used one daylight and one night shot. The difference between the 4S and the GS2 was pretty small, with the GS2 winning some of the measures. It depends on priorities. For me the GS2 just takes it actually.
Video on the GS2 can be modified to have higher bit rates than the 4S, and it does improve the video.
I would too like to see better camera improvement on future generation phones. Yes, phones aren't dedicated cameras and won't give the same quality as one, but using your phone as a camera is just so convenient, especially carrying around a thin phone compared to a bulky camera. Would like to see a camera that snaps quick like the Galaxy Nexus with a better lens/sensor.
Absolute BULL****!
Hands down iphone4s offers best video recording?

Maybe you havent seen an Xperia arc camera. Ive had one and it beats the iphone hands down. Not only have I seen this online but me and friends with iphones have compared them and even they concede that the arc is superior.
Granted the 4S is better than the 4 but then its a newer phone, expect newer sony phones to beat it again all over.
I have S2 and 4s, but I have to say 4s is better (for me) when taking a pic..
such as capture speed, exposure, and color..
similar but better, how should I say that
but when it comes to video recording S2 rocks
I'll post both photos from S2 and 4s later..

Comparing your arc to your friend's iPhone 4S does not constitute a proper test. Post picture comparisons here and let us judge for ourselves, because unless you do so, your argument is void and you come off as a simple fanboy. I mean you are arguing that the tests done by review sites are completely full of ****, yet fail to provide any evidence to prove your point other than your word. So in your opinion, in whom do you think we have more faith: you, or the tech sites that have years of experience and none of the obvious bias?
Looking at comparison shots across multiple review sites that have the know-how on how to take a proper photograph, I have yet to see a single shot taken with the Xperia Arc that would immediately crown its camera the king of those found in mobile phones. Its camera is good, but far from the best. The N8 is the clear winner there.
Judge for yourself(arc s left and iPhone 4s right):

Have to give that one to the 4S. The Arc looks unfocused (way less texture detail in the walls).
iPhone 4 has perfect 720p video but it is shaky as hell ! GS 2 has also great video but I think that it could be sharper and also I dont see stabilization option in video department ? I also use only 720p because I dont need 1080p.
Higher bitrate on Galaxy does not have better video, sound is great now with that tweak but I think that there is no test on the internet that says that Galaxy SII has better camera than iPhone 4S, I dont like that but I must accept it, and Galaxy is out for a long time now.

The PC World test I linked to did put the SGS2 ahead of the iPhone 4S, but the pictures clearly speak for themselves; the camera in the iPhone 4S is much better.
I can't figure why anyone even bothers doing pointless amateur comparisons, I only can guess that flaming and clicks...
When it comes to photo, there's usually more than meets the eye that should be taken in consideration when considering a shoot-out:
1. Details about the camera: the sensor itself ( circuitry and pixel pattern/array),pixel density on the sensor, optics ( CZ vs plastic)
2. Details about the camera usage specs- firmware dependent: init time, focusing interval, focus points, capture response time, ISO values-what values are useable, dynamic range, shutter speeds.
MAYBE most important
3. OS-dependent details: jpeg/compression algorithm, color rendering algorithm, noise reduction algorithm, ...
Give me a RAW file from any sensor and I can make the photo better looking than anything.
Given that fact they are making a review about cameras, though cell phones cameras, they should have the decency to ask someone that has written a review about cameras.
It's like writing about wines and declaring one to be the best solely by the time and volume it took to get the girl into the bed.
This is interesting. I would like to have a phone with the perfect camera. Such a thing doesn't exist. So I have chosen the phone that is best all around.
If all I wanted was a great camera and didn't care about any other features I would take what my wife has, a Nokia N8.

I have both the phone. The quality and video recording is indeed better on the iPhone 4S from what I can see in my eyes.
But c'mon guys? When did the S2 come out? You really gonna think 'Apple' won't be spying or checking up on competitors to release something 'atleast' better during iPhone 4S production?
These reviews are easilly manipulated.
PC world gave a much better non biased review and it puts the SGS2 above the Iphone 4s in the camera department.
One thing is sure is that the SGS2 gives better night shots then the Iphone 4S.....The Iphone 4S gives a brighter picture but loose a lot of details.
I've hated phones that use noise reduction/edge sharping to scrub out the detail and replace it with digital artifacts. Whats wrong with grain.
So from that stand point I love what Apple is doing with their unit. Detail isn't something you can get back once its lost.
I purchased a moto-x yesterday out of contract to give it a "road test" and If I liked it I would return it and order 32gb as my Iphone 5 replacement. I had to make a trip to NYC today. My train ride into Penn station is typically 1 hr 10 minutes and today I waited another 10 at the platform. I started out at 100% and started streaming Spotify over LTE and sat on reddit and google chrome for most of the way along with a few games of solitaire and burnt it down to 65%. I fared about the same with my Iphone 5 while making the same run pre-IOS7 however expect worse performance after the update. I was in battery park for the most of the day and lost another ~10% in the subway roaming/intermittent streaming. By the time I got on the train 7 hours later I was at 35%, I used the navigation for about 10 minutes to get some food (awesome btw).
Things I like about the phone.
The screen size is nicer than the Iphone 5 however may not be "as bright" I assume this has to do with the OLED screen.
The Active notifications has to be my favorite feature. It really is quite nice and I dread going back to my Iphone 5 without it.
The active feature while driving is nice however I haven't given it the full test yet.
Google Hangouts is amazing, it really is and I am going to force my girlfriend to use it on her iphone.
Android feels like a smart phone that wants to "help you". I'm sure that doesn't make sense. It just has some mystical google type power IMO.
Things I don't like.
I was hoping battery life would be a little better based on reviews, however I find it good enough.
The camera however this is an AT&T phone without the latest update. The camera will make or break this phone for me as I have a room full of fishing pictures, most are really good and taken with smartphone camera's (Iphone's.)
Also I tried to scan a barcode and it was just NOT happening while on the train, something the iphone did no problem (using myfitnesspal)
It also doesn't charge as fast as my iphone, however that may be because of the larger battery?
Also, when I return this phone this weekend, is there A way I can have everything backed up, so when I get my new phone I won't have to set everything up again and download all these apps over?
Here is the pic comparison, done side by side. http://imgur.com/a/tywmw
I'm actually having trouble making my picture look as bad off as you did and I am not able to reproduce it.
The color in my photos is spectacular, way better than my HTC One. I just took this of my salt water fish tank and it's way more than close... It's impeccably accurate.

Doing photo comparisons at this point is a waste of time. Att is going to have the update out very soon so why bother. The camera is great after the fix.
Compare then.
To answer your question you have the option to back up ur apps through your Google account. They redownload as soon as you log in on the next phone

yesterday... i have just flash the tmo firmware on my unlock bootloader rogers version... and update ! my wife now want the white moto x ! pictures quality is just like the day and night... equal or better to the iphone 5... equal to the sg4 ...
... mmm i have say the tmobile firmware is excellent ... no brand no bloat ( retail en us on the about ) ...
Would you say the battery life is pretty similar for both phones? also how much thicker is the moto x?

Don't think i'm dissing the phone, I like it more than the iphone5
I'm just waiting for the update.
People tend to like the over saturated photos that the iPhone and Samsung produces... The Moto X creates pictures closer to real life colors.
Its the same with DSLR's, Canon processes photos with colors close to real life but the Nikon gives it more saturation - newcomers tend to go Nikon for this reason.
I prefer the real life colors, and I'll add saturation if needed later on.
Edited.

Agree 100 percent, iPhone photos always bleed colors and it's especially seen in very detailed things.
In terms of Nikon and canon, I shoot with a Canon and only would buy an older Nokia if I was to but one myself.

Again I think you mean NIKON. I never experienced excessive saturation on any of Nikon DSLRs. I never used retard mode or full retard mode on them though. If you are using those modes on your Canon, well, congratulations.

NIKON, as you say.. Makes great cameras I don't see what your point here is besides starting a war that's been waged since the dawn of personal photography.
On another note, my main camera is a pentax k-5, that doesn't mean it shoots way better photos. But it's weather resistant and takes the best night pictures of any camera I've ever owned.

Just pointing out that any camera that has manual control can be adjusted to take life like colors. IMO comparing auto modes on manual cameras is stupid.
My boss shoots a k-5, its an attractive camera. I like that the image stabilization is in the camera not the lens.

Yeah, it's a fantastic camera... The biggest turn on for me was the Iso noise is tremendously low even at very high Iso ranges.

is anyone else? i came from a G2 hoping for a much better camera, as I preferred the GS4 camera to my G2...yeah, well I get my GS5, and i'm sitting here looking at the pics i've taken, and good god they're awful. they just look horrible compared to what the G2 shoots.
and low light? FORGET IT. if you can even get it to focus without the flash on (which it won't, at all, after numerous attempts of me trying with even lights on behind me) it's going to look like garbage anyway.
now i'm sitting here wondering if I should return it or not. I spent full price on the damn thing (after selling a GS4 and a Gnex) and i'm really wondering if it's even worth it to keep because i was honestly expecting a good camera, especially from all of the raving about it i've seen.
Camera looks great here

yep, first thing i did. if ya notice, the plastic doesn't cover the sensor itself..only the outer portion.
oh well, i gave up on the S5. on top of build quality issues (the creaking/shifting body that Samsung is known for..) and that crappy camera, I just went and returned it tonight. had to pay a $35 restocking fee, but whatever. got my $600 back.
wish you guys the best!

S5 has abandoned Sony sensors right? That would explain OP. Maybe new Samsung sensors are just not as good as Sony's. We all know megapixel is secondary anyway....
My cam is fine...I posted a pic in other thread. You got a bad phone. Exchange it. Those pics you posted aren't good.
I'm happy with the cam as well. Haven't tried any outdoor shots yet but it looks at least as good as my s4 so far. I like the new options and cleaner access. Just snapped this on a whim...

I'll second this. Not near as bad as Jayochs, but not any better than the S4, and worse, IMHO, in bright outdoor shots where the S4 was incredible. Medium to low-light is improved only because you can see the images more - but if you don't use stabilization mode, they're horribly noisy. If you do use stabilization mode, they look better, but then a LOT of your indoor shots, even if they're not low light, will end up asking you to hold still for 3-4 seconds.
And I don't know about y'all, but my camera is relatively slow to load. Keeping in mind I'm comparing to a 5S and M8. So far the laggier camera experience and not-as-great-as-they-said-it-would-be images have me liking the M8's camera more... it's just so darn fast, and consistent and focusable and can take medium-lit shots quickly.
Edit: full disclaimer... I'm a nitpicky phone camera snob!
Put me down as another who is disappointed in the camera. Outdoor shots are great for me, but indoor shots are extremely lackluster. Even with stability on, they're disappointing. The indoor capabilities of the iPhone 5S blow this one out of the water. Given the pixel size, I didn't expect it to be better at indoor shots than the 5S or the M8, but I was definitely hoping that it would be better than it is.
I'm going to give it a few more days, but this is potentially a deal breaker for me. That's very disappointing, especially since there's very little else that I dislike about the phone.

Yep, same here. Though others have said their camera loads up quite fast - my experience is it's pretty laggy moving in and out of it. But I also love just about everything else about it, so if I can get used to the camera, or maybe figure out what I'm missing (if anything??), it'll be good. If not, it'll be the M8 for me likely... though I don't like how slippery / heavy it is.
I hate to say it (ok I don't really hate it), but after all of the devices I've used, I still feel like the 5S is still the best all around mobile camera experience when you combine the usability with image quality. The M8 is on par when it comes to speed and usability - heck it might even be faster. But image quality is still better on the 5S.
And good to see you b! I've been pretty forum-inactive for awhile...

I doubt you're missing anything. I've gone through every setting and tried a host of things to get better pictures out of it to no avail. I spent quite a bit of time yesterday taking the exact same shots with the S5, Note 3, and iPhone 5S. Outdoors during the day, the S5 reigned supreme, with both the Note 3 and 5S close behind. Outdoors at night, the 5S was the clear winner with the S5 and the Note 3 providing similar results (with the S5 coming out slightly ahead between the two). Indoors, the 5S came out on top again in every lighting situation, both without a flash and with a flash. The S5 was slightly better than the Note 3 indoors, but really not by much.
Given that the overall image quality between the S5 and the Note 3 isn't a huge difference, I'm leaning towards returning the S5 and just keeping the Note 3 for now.

Agreed. The 5S that I use for work is just solid all around when it comes to the camera, providing really great shots in almost all lighting conditions. The only phone I've used that's better is the Lumia 1040, but it doesn't have the speed that the 5S does. Apple really nailed the camera for the 5S.
The S5 has officially been approved as a device we can use for work, so I was hoping to replace both my Note 3 and my 5S with it and only have to carry one device for personal and business use. But so far, the camera on the S5 makes that impossible.

It can take great pics, don't get me wrong - though even when it's great, I'm not convinced it's better than the S4.
I think it's a combination of a new sensor, a new "style" of auto-focus, and post-processing issues.

I think that's one of the biggest problems. Even in well-lit situations, sometimes things - like people and animals - can come out looking like an oil painting. That's one of the biggest problems with indoor shots as well. Turning off the stabilization helps a little with that, but not as much as one would think. I've tried all of the major third-party camera apps, and none of them give much better results. For indoor shots, the sensor just isn't big enough to let in the amount of light that's needed to take an above average picture.
I think some of the discrepancies in what various people are reporting with the quality comes down to photo quality preferences, what different people are used to with the phones in their cameras, and at times a more discerning eye for quality. The S5 camera is certainly no slouch, and I'd place it above pretty much all other Android phones right now as far as being an all around shooter (there are others that do certain things better, but not everything), but it's not the big step forward that I really wanted it to be.
I'm going to be returning it and going back to my Note 3 for the time being.

In short, the S5 is an improvement, but not a big one. The differences were pretty marginal in most cases.
As for what I like better about the Note 3 it really comes down to two things - the size of the screen and the S-Pen.
