Issue with samsung and 160 character txt limit ?? - Fascinate General

With handcent I have had no trouble on other android phones with simply splitting txts over the limit, but I am getting the dreaded "the proceeding message... blah blah blah"
Anyone have any suggestions ?

** BUMP **
Is anyone having or not having this issue ??
If everyone isn't maybe its something i'm doing ?

I am just using the regular text messaging client built into the fascinate and noticed when typing a text that there is a counter in the top right corner of my message and it shows a max of 160 characters.
This is a royal pain. There has to be another way to avoid this. The person I am texting is also using the Verizon network as well.
This should probably be added to the list of things that need to be fixed on the phone.

160 Character limit
When I was on froyo stock I did not have this problem, but now I am upto 2.3.5 it still is there. Has anyone been able to fix this?

Are you just on stock 2.3.5? A lot of custom roms I've seen have the option to split SMS messages over 160 characters. It's not a perfect workaround since I've always had longer SMS messages "just work" on other devices, but it's at least something. Maybe look in the settings of the messaging app to see if there's a similar option?

I did, and I could not find any settings on the phone that would limit it.
Sorry about the delay

Hm, that is strange. Short of flashing a different rom I'm not really sure what to suggest. Maybe you could see what Verizon has to say about it since you're using stock software?

it's the network, just the way cdma works. use go SMS or a custom rom.

FWIW, I never had this issue on my incredible, just on the fascinate.

It's your network operator, not the rom. But a special sms app can fake it

Messaging app is completely terrible

I purchased an evo for both me and my wife. A friend of mine did the same as well. It seemed like a good deal at the time and the phone seems to be good quality overall...
However, when messaging back and forth quickly, messages disappear from the thread and cannot be seen in any way. All that I receive is a notification. This has happened for all of us. Messages are also often received in the wrong order.
Would the situation be any better if I was using plain android instead of the buggy sense UI? It looks like the froyo rom is making good progress.. I'm going to try it, but if it's still as buggy as it is stock, Sprint will be getting 4 EVOs returned.
Try another messaging app like handcent or chomp. You have choices.
No problems here, and I'm on my 2nd Android phone. Both have worked great with no problems such as yours.
Seems like more of a rant then a request for help. that being said, my family has 5 Evo's between us and we have had not one complaint with the SMS. possibly sprint service in the area? i know when i'm in smaller towns the sms seems to lag, almost like its stuck in queue somewhere before being sent to me.
good luck mate!
Use Handcent. Problem solved. The stock app is slow and sucks.
If you hate it, go back to the iPhone where you obviously came from?
Now to try to find a question to answer within all that complaining....... hmmm... oh yes, I'm having issues with the SMS coming in odd orders occasionally. I did not ever experience this with my Hero.
So what I can derive from that is that this particular release of Sense, which is NOT Android, has a bug. You need to differentiate between the OS and the VERY deep reaching Sense UI that HTC puts on top.
I'd tell you to wait for the ROM development to pick up, but something tells me you're not a tinkerer. The iPhone is a fantastic phone.. you just can't tinker as much as you can with Android. So with Android you'll have choices but you'll have bugs. It's just something I come to expect.
It's like running Linux. Sure it's trendy to hate Microsoft, but holy hell there are a lot of problems with Linux apps in design, UI, and in general stability (Note, I didn't say Linux has problems.. I said apps. Because it's the crap on top of the underlying system I have complaints with). I still love it, I just have to approach it with an attitude that it's not going to be as polished as OS X, and it's not going to be as stable either.
Welcome to Open Source and the stuff people put out with it.
After hearing everyone praise handcent I decided to give it a try myself and wow is it better. Choice is very nice

Edited to remove ranting, I'll give handcent a shot. Hopefully it doesn't lose random messages =(.
I've gotten some messages out of order, but that's about it.
If I try Handcent and somehow don't like it, is it easy to revert back to the original built-in messaging app?

Just make sure you disable notifications in the stock app so you don't get double notifications. That's annoying.
Also, I haven't had any problems with MMS while using Handcent.

Thanks, I totally noticed that too. But it looks like if I disable notifications in the notification bar then it doesn't let me make sure it plays a sound.
Does handcent control that on its own so it doesn't matter if the sound is disabled on the stock messaging app?

Yea I have that problem alot I usually use built in messaging for MMS and handcent for all other SMS. I never have a problem receiving MMS with handcent just sending.
I prefer chomp, and have had no issues. well maybe one, or two texts out of order. Like if the sender typed a "two page" text and sent, then sent a short text the short one might come in before the second half of the "two page" text.

I ran some tests and I can send over 3g it's only when wifi is enabled. So I did some research and found out sprint only sends MMS over their connections. The default messaging app will bypass wifi and use 3g to send mms. Handcent had patched this for the Hero.
I'd like to put in a plug for ChompSMS. I hadn't used it before, but people were saying that it automatically resizes your pictures when sending MMS. Maybe this isn't a problem on the Evo, but it was on the Hero. I will occasionally get a text out of order if someone sends me a long one that is broken up into more than 2 messages. But, I really like it's interface better than Handcent, which I have also used. As far as I know, I have never had a text go missing when using Chomp.
Android is all about choice. It's really nice to have all these choices and these are FREE (as in beer).

[Q] Android splitting SMS, bug?

Hello, I am on MDeejay's rEVOlution 2.2, Kernel 7.6;
I was texting some people and they say android is splitting my text's. I texted myself, and it sends two seperate sms after 154 characters.
My carrier is Vodafone, and has no sms limit.
Anyone silly idea's?
I had the same issue some time ago, but with recieving messages from a friend. think I was using an older Mdeejay Z version. Haven't tested it with the new rEVOlution. But since we are both on VodafoneNL, that might be it. So we'll need input from non Vodafone users.
I now confirmed that even switching to something like 'handcent SMS', an alternate sms app for android - does not fix the issue.
It cuts off the sms after 160 characters, and sents everything after 160c in a seperate sms. Does it again at 320.
I have seen this... I don't recall how I fixed it within the original build (spare parts, maybe). Within the wonderful Handcent app goto settings / sent message settings and you will find the option to 'split sms 160'. Try removing the tick
Sent from my HTC HD2
Thanks for the input, mate.
Anyone else who has a idea on how to fix this in the standard messaging application from Android?

Yes. I was having this split sms-problem as well. I've tried a lot of things - but none worked.
I have been using different Sense roms (Desire and EVO-based) with the same problem. Then I took the step away from Sense and installed a stock Froyo Rom - HD2ONE. And voila - now my text messages are joined correctly at the receiving end.
But now I'm suffering from the echo-problem... Hope to fix it soon.
Im not sure what you mean right now after reading a couple times the thread.
If what you want is to send a single SMS with more than 160 chars, thats not possible. SMS (SHORT Message Service ) has a limit of 160 chars per message, sometimes a bit less if you carrier adds a signature or something at the end.
What cell phones do, is split SMSs every 160 chars, then send em and the receiving phone join em together again.
The issue might be on the way your Android Build splits the message
Sooooo, if you issue is with spliting, then yeah you can try fixing it using different ROMs, if what you want is sending 160+ SMSs, then I think is not possible

I guess most of us know that an SMS consist of max 160 chars. But most modern phones (from the last decade or so) make this almost invisible to the user, as when the user types more than 160 chars the phone will automatically split the message in two or more sms messages. These 2, 3 or more split text messages will then be rejoined again by the receiving phone.
This is how it should work on all mobile phones, but on different Sense builds on my phone something goes wrong. It seems (only seems) that my android sense phone does the right thing. When I send a message consisting of say 400 chars my phone sends this message to the receiver and it looks absolutely normal. It's invisible to me that the message is split - although I know of course that the phone does that for me. But whoever the receiver is (a nokia, Iphone, or another HTC) they all see my sms as 3 separate sms messages - not joined. I have received many complaints from friends and colleagues because my sms messages will not join on their phone.
The solution for me was to switch to a non sense android build.
Maybe most of the sense builds in this forum is originating from a us version or an asian version where the sms split/join control characters are different from the european ones, and therefore others phone (from europe where I come from) cannot understand it and does not join the messages. I don't know...
But I do know that a stock android build works for me...
And by the way... I figured out the echo-problem by reading Hastarins FAQ.
same problem here on mdj revolution 1.7 and o2 germany
maybe some more people of different builds can test if it's working fine. especially on sense builds!
I don't have this problem here. Just checked with girlfriends phone.

Does this problem has been solved ? People's stating to get annoyed by my "multiples SMS" & my no sent SMS (because it's sometimes converted in MMS and I didn't activated MMS on my network - so no sent).
I've noticed that downloading Hancent and removing it has changed the limit up to 160 chars in Sense-SMS.
It will be unfortunate to give up a wonderful Sense ROM because of this issue.
Configuration is :
ROM : Core_Droid_EVO_V0.7_SuperSonic [SD] (but problem occurs on all Sense ROM I tested so far).
Operator : Proximus [Belgium] (I think it's the big problem, 'cause in the changelog of V0.7 said).

I have actually seen this happen to regular Android phones running Sense, or any phone that was natively Android being updated outside of OTA Updates to a newer version (even if stock), so it's not just a porting issue.

[Q] Enhanced Messaging Service

Does anyone know if any of the custom roms fix the long text message (EMS) limitation of the Fascinate?
A friend sent me a long text message (over 160 chars but shorter than 300 chars) and received the following message back from VZW... "Message delivered to <number> as plain text. Destination does not support enhanced messaging service.
This never happened with my DROID 1 and supposedly Samsung is fixing this in a future release. However, I am not a patient person.
thanks
so far no custom rom has resolved this issue to my knowledge.
Handcent corrects it.
If Handcent corrects it then I must be doing something wrong.
I have the stock ROM rooted, deBing'd, running ADW Launcher and Handcent and still get the EMS errors. Handcent is set as my default app for messaging. Is there a Handcent setting I missed to correct this?

There are settings to parse messages above 160. Perhaps it's a desperate issue that I haven't experienced.

I have been getting this as well. Handcent user. Kinda lame, but nothing to write home about.

There is an option in Handcent to split messages over 160 character. It even provides a countdown when composing a message so you know when it will be split. Really nice feature!
Thanks for the tips, I will dig around in Handcent and see if it resolves the issue.

Weird outgoing SMS garbled text.

Brand new Nexus S 4g on Sprint.
I have an N1 and as of today started getting random garbled texts like below.
Phone was bought and system update installed on Friday afternoon.
No "unusual" apps installed other than Handcent+emoji , and Pulse.
Tried installing GoogleVoice for it to work "the classic" way as described on these forums could that be causing an issue ?
The person with the Nexus S says they dont see those messages in there outgoing. Only recipients.
Yep definitely weird, I texted my sister yesterday using handcent and she replied saying it was all numbers and symbols, on my end it looked fine. I wonder if it was a handcent thing.

Nope not a Handcent thing. I texted my boss and the next day he showed me it and said, "Dude. What the f*** is this ****...?" Hahahaha, I was using the stock messaging application. Hasn't done it since.
So I just found the problem... It's only if the text is more than 160 characters long. I just tested it...
I same thing happened to me using the evo.

From what I hear it is a problem with CDMA, not sure what though. The way you can fix it is to go into your txt settings (I use handcent) and have messages longer than 160 characters broken up into multiple messages of 160 characters or less automatically. Or pay attention to your character count and break into a second message when it gets to 160.
I had this problem when i was using Sprint Google Voice integration.
Once i disabled that integration, this problem (and many others) stopped.

It's not so much a problem but a limitation of CDMA. GSM networks will automatically split messages up larger than 160 characters, CDMA can't do so effectively. I ran into the same problem when I installed handcent sms, since by default the feature to break apart messages is deactivated. If you're using the stock sms app then you won't have this problem since it limits any text being sent to 160 characters. If you want to send more you have to create a new message.
That limitation is a problem
I am not sure if it´s a limitation. I had a lot of those, not sure if any sms of mine reached more than 160 chars.
After googling it a lot, someone reported it as a bug in gingerbread, and it happens if you use accentuation.
I followed this, and never had any friend complaining of garbled SMS again.
Interesting. I had them uninstall handcent and it stopped. But they also said theyve only been sending short messages.
Will try the character fix to see if it works.

I was having this issue and this resolved it for me.
Just happened to me. I enabled split SMS and we'll see what my friends say.
I did not have this problem with my EVO 4G on Sprint, (using the stock sms or Go SMS Pro) but I am having it with my Nexus S using Go SMS Pro (stock sms app won't let me send more than 160 chars).
I can confirm that having handcent split the message fixes this issue. I also have the .apk of the stock messaging app with similar settings to split the messages.

Happend to me today
So I texted my brother earlier this morning and he said that it happened, but the weird thing is that afterwards my data stopped working.
So since I couldn't get it to work no matter what I did, I decided to wipe and reflashed my phone but it still doesn't work. Now i'm stuck with a phone that doesn't have any contacts, and no working data but i get texts fine, although I'm not sure if they send fine since i haven't tried. D:
So has anyone had this happen to them, if so do you have any suggestions.
Thanks in advance.
Edit:
I forgot to say that i have a Nexus S 4g with sprint.

[ns4g] sms problems.

Running latest nightly cm7 (5). With netarchy's latest kernel. Using handcent for text.
When sending text under 160 everything works great. Once going over causing a split, the recipients of my text gets gibberish. Scrambled letter and symbols. Is anyone else getting this? Both my phone and my brother's phone do the same thing, so I know you should get the same results if you use the same setup as me. My question is why and what can we do to fix it?
I have read about this before but not actually experienced it yet (no long texts). I am running CM7 on my ns4g. I heard the simple solution was to go into your sms settings and simply select to have the app split up your texts at 160 characters.
Oh - sorry - you are using handcent. forgot. I just use cm7 sms app. hmmm. not sure. handcent doesn't have the same option?
Handcent has those options. They don't do anything. I ran cm7 on my evo with handcent, never had this problem before. So I'm thinking its a phone specific problem.

Its a CDMA issue. Have your texts split up into multiple txts at the 160 character count. There is even a setting in Handcent that says something about compatibly with CDMA

i have used both settings in handcent for splitting by character and by word at the 160 limit. neither of them seem to work. the recipient receives two texts but it's all gibberish. I never once had this problem on my evo which is cdma also. both phones ran CM and handcent. I've gone through each and every setting in handcent and CM to double check I wasn't missing something. regardless it should work without me changing a setting to allow long texts. It is something that needs to be fixed.
What i'm thinking the problem is, is a setting that was forgotten to change from the gsm phones in the sms settings.
I just installed Miui, using the stock sms app from that it still scrambles the texts over 160. It says it's sending two texts, but something is horribly wrong on the receiving end of the text. So i'm pretty sure it's not a problem with handcent settings. It's the fact that these roms are ported from the GSM NS and we're missing something yet.
I'm going to install a stock image after work today and confirm that it works on stock roms.
I'm very shocked no one else has complained about this. I have two NS4G phones both of which have the same symptoms.
Just confirmed that 160+ sms messages send fine from a stock os on the ns4g. using stock messaging or handcent.
Using CM or Miui is causing gibberish to come through. There seems to be a problem using non stock based roms at the moment.
That is interesting. I had the problem, but I resent the same exact text except I broke it into 2 smaller sms and it was received fine. I can't remember what rom that was though, because I've been through so many and havent heard of the issue since I setup the automatic split sms in handcent.
