Anyone else having issues with this? I know MMS is controlled through cell data but when receiving, the phone doesn't turn data on when on wifi.

Had that issue today was driving me insane.!!!!!
Sprint said it's a known issue with this phone. Can anyone verify?
Had the same problem on my HTC Hero, just gotta disable WiFi a sec to let it download then re-enable it.

"Known Issue?" I really hope they "fix" it, rather than just call it a quirk with the phone.
Known issue across several Android platforms.

Which other android platforms has this issue? (Curious)
I realize my issue is different but I think it is similar. I was trying to download a file on 4g and make a call at the same time and every time it disconnected the download. I think it happened when I hung up but I am not sure I just know that it would disconnect.
Maybe it just has problems switching between data types fluidly.
i've had same issue. It's very consistent.

Not True. I have an evo and if i receive a mms message, 3g turns on while wifi is on to download the picture. For some reason, the 3g icon doesn't turn on while wifi is on

Do you have froyo on your evo? Since I put froyo on my hero I've had the same feature and I'm thinking it just comes with 2.2
any thoughts?
Sent from my HERO200 using XDA App
Mine has been sketchy...sometimes I get them, sometimes I don't. As of lastnight I flashed 2.2.1, didn't like it and now I'm back to 2.1 and I'm not getting any pic mail. I got three pics sent to me lastnight and haven't received one of them, along w/ a few others that I didn't even know I missed until I went onto pictures.sprintpcs.com and saw others. I thought I was over this BS when I got rid of the Moment!!
Kidstechno suggested shutting off WiFi, but I'm not going to do that 10x a day just to see if I've missed anything. Hell, I don't even know if this is strictly happening when I'm only on WiFi. Isn't there a fix for this yet?!

For some reason my 3g keeps disconnecting. In settings the mobile network option is greyed out, stuck on "turning on". The only thing that fixes it is a reboot.

Is your phone stock?
it seems to just show that when the phone is idle, not updating, sending/receiving, etc. i have no way to prove this, just a theory.

I had that problem when I was running adrylalyne's Vanilla FrankenROM. It's the sole reason why I had to quit running it. It was a seriously annoying once-in-a-while thing at first but once I'd been running it for about 24 hours, it seemed to happen ALL THE TIME and got to the point where sometimes even a reboot wouldn't fix it. I haven't had it on any other ROM, though.
I was running the leaked radio (2.05?) when I had that ROM. Now that I've got 2.15, I've been thinking about giving it another shot.

No, the connection completely goes away. It's not just "I can't see the 3G symbol"... The phone actually has NO data connection and it seems impossible to get it to come back without a reboot.
2.15 radio fixed that for me. Using first leak Rom still.
Sent from my ADR6300 using XDA App
in order to get rid of this, you'd need to find which file or which portion of that file controls the signal indicator on the phone, and replace it with an older version of that file, from before this "idle" indicator began.
maybe the google holds the answers you seek?

Good to know. I think I will try that FrankenROM again, then.
i'm unrooted and on stock OS, just got my incredible yesterday...so far i've noticed that it seems to just stay dormant, whenever i open an app that connects to the network, it automatically lights up the indicator and starts using the data, and it doesn't seem to prevent me from actually sending or receiving data, so i don't know how i would tell if it's actually no connection or just an "idle" indicator. how did you come to that conclusion?

What you see is normal. The 3G (or 1X) indicator only lights when the data connection is being used. The problem here is that there was no data connection. I would attempt to do anything that used the data connection and it would not connect. No email, no internet, no Nav, no nothing. The programs would all open, but could not download anything.
Agreed, that's sort of what I was implying, I was referring to the OP. so the connection issues are Rom based, not related with the gray indicators. Just because its gray doesn't mean you don't have connection. Clarifying for the next person who stumbles across this thread.

What he was talking about being greyed out is when you go into Menu> Settings> Wireless & Networks, the place where you check to turn Mobile networks on and off is greyed out with the text of "Turning on..." below.

Same thing happened to me over the weekend. I was in a tiny town in Texas that apparently had no 3g and I was unable to do anything that used the data connection. Reboot didn't work, neither did changing the Mobile Directory Number to all zeros when pressing ##program>NAM-General (as was suggested on a different forum which I cannot link to). What sucks is that it's highly unlikely I can duplicate this problem since there is probably good 3g coverage around the verizon store in the city where I live. I called verizon and the person said something about that area not having access to the data network, which I don't believe because when I was screwing with the settings under ##program I managed to get a text message. My wife's Samsung Vibrant (I know, different network) had no 3g but she was still able to access all apps that required the data network.
When my wife's Incredible was stock, this happened to her. It wouldn't connect to 3G. When going into settings and checking it out, "Mobile Network" was all grayed out. After LONG discussions with Verizon Tech Dept, 2 factory resets later, they found the problem to be on their end with the phone being "lost" on their system. They reset something (didn't tell me what) and bingo! her phone had 3G again.
I just had it happen to me. Reboot fixed it, but I'd like to know why its happening so I can tell my friends at VZW to look into it...
Sent from my ADR6300 using XDA App
Still happening to me. I told the tech that a bunch of people in the forums were saying it was a problem on their end, something about my phone needing to be removed from and then added back to the data plan, and they told me that they'd look into it. Eventually the 3g came back on its own like it always has when I have this problem, and the next day I got a text from verizon saying the issue had been fixed (which I doubt consisted of anything more than someone having the system send me a text saying the issue had been fixed). I've had this problem when my phone was stock, when I updated to the 2.05 baseband, and now that I've rooted and installed skyraider. Not exactly the experience I anticipated when I left the iphone 3g...
noticed another thing, idk if related...my gmail will "quit" working...meaning, it shows i have new emails inside the app, but they haven't pulled to my phone yet. the refresh button in the app, and the sync now button under accounts don't work, i had to do a nand wipe and restore a file from a day ago. i think it's app related, because it always seemed to happen after i updated some apps in the market, but one of the times (this last time) i didn't update the apps, i deleted them and it still happened. all other data and network connections work fine, only gmail. prolly not related, but thought i'd throw it out there
It's really annoying to get a message and be notified minutes after. I don't really care for email notifications because most of them are not urgent, but I also use WhatsApp and yesterday I received a notification 1 HOUR after the person sent it to me. It's crazy. I think it has something to do with google talk? The delay is in both WiFi and 3g/hspa. Does anyone have the same issue? Or know how to fix this? Thanks
bump
Same here.
The problem is not the notifications themselves, it's something about the data and the phone.
Gmail does not get the email pushed. When it does, the notification goes off immediately.
But the new email can take as long as 20-30 minutes to get to the phone.
Same about whatsapp, FB... everything that has to do with data.
I tried on wifi and 3G - same behavior, meaning, it is not related to the wifi-when-screen-is-off thread or any change to the QOS in the router, as suggested in other threads I've found.
I am sure I am not the only one to experience this.
Not sure if this is a Nexus 4 or an Android 4.2.1 issue.
Who else has this prob?
Any ideas as to what we can try to do to get to the bottom of this?

Are there anyone feel that there are some delays when you receive hangouts message on nexus 4 from other device?
I tested out there are no problem on HTC one x and iPhone.
Thanks.

There are universally delayed notifications on the Nexus 4 when on Wi-Fi. I find that hangouts, as well as messages from services like WhatsApp are delayed on WiFi. That said, hangouts seems to be quicker and instant when on mobile data than WhatsApp for me, which can be a bit slow.
Yes, you are right. I tested out when Wi-Fi is turned on.
Is that kind of software or hardware problem?

FYI - I have no such issues on wifi or 3G.
One suggestion is maybe it's your wifi network being of "poor" connection so your phone (temporarily) stops using it. There's a setting in advance to disable it.

Just wanted to point out that it's not totally universal, it seems to be dependent on the exact type of WiFi hardware being used.

Same here. For me WiFi or gsm data makes no difference. I get missed video calls 30 mins after the call was actually made, and usually only receive messages 30+ minutes after they're sent. It seems the service is only instant if I'm actively using my phone.
I have the occasional delay on What'sApp, but it's far, far worse on Hangouts. This makes Hangouts worse than useless... since people see that I haven't read the message 30 mins later and end up calling/txting anyway.
I have the exact same problem. Thought It was because of WiFi but it happens on data as well

Otherwise I am jumping ship from the Nexus line (for the first time since the 1st Nexus came out) and possibly buying a SGS4 (yuk, but least it should work).

can you give me some more details?? are you on stock or root??? did the problem get solved forever whether on stock rom or any custom rom???
After the update of Hangouts to 1.1 and the 4.3 update the problem seems to be solved, at least for the moment.
if its that you guys arent getting messages when the screen is off, raise your voltage at 384mhz to 800mV or higher. if the issue was the delayed notifications with the screen off, than this should fix it.
So, I'm liking this phone so far, we switched from tmo and I went from a m8 to this. Two annoyances, first, is there any way at all to dim the soft button lights, only at night? OMG they were bright last night while laying in bed! From what I can find, it's either 100% or totally disabled. I don't mind them during the day, but not at night. That's just stupid to me.
And another, what I think is major annoyance that just happened. It seems Sprint pushed a bunch of apps down to my phone automatically! I went through all my apps to log in and do all the setup stuff and then rebooted my phone. Now all of a sudden, I've got music players, tv players, support chat, etc., all Sprint branded! WTF?!? Are they going to keep doing this? Is there a way to stop this?
And now another thing...
It turns out that I cannot send or receive picture messages while on wifi. Sprint doesn't seem to know why and is blaming my wifi connection. No, that's not it. It's not slow (100+mb), there are no connection limits, my wife can do this just fine on wifi, we could do it before, etc. WTF????
More info, just found that if I turn off WiFi Calling, things work fine. Never had this problem with tmo....
One last update on the mms issue. Looks like I can't send via wifi. I disabled mobile data and still have the problem. So, with Sprint or the S7 you can't send mms messages via wifi? What's up with that?
1. the lights can be shut off with an app called Galaxy Lights not sure they can be dimmed without root
2. Try package disabler pro you can disable all of those Sprint apps and they wont be in your app drawer
3. Not being able to send MMS is 100% the device, It has worked for me on every device Ive ever owned. Try a factory reset just in case something got botched on the intial set up.
Are you using hangouts to try and send mms? If so, try another messaging app.

I like to use mysms as default messaging app, but MMS gets stuck when I use it for default app. I have to go back to stock messaging and it works just fine so something might be borked with 3rd party apps for MMS. Another problem is if you change from the default messaging app, notifications for unread text on the always on display stop working.
Try textra, it has an option for sending/receiving over WiFi, I'm not sure if it works with the always on feature.

1. Yeah, I don't want them off, just dimmed or maybe be able to turn off just at night automatically.

Well after talking to Sprint again and Samsung, it looks like it's an issue with Google Messages and Hangouts. Using the Samsung texting app, things work as expected. I thought I checked that before, but obviously not.

Yeah, I've been able to disable or remove most of it. But there are still a few lingering apps that I can't do either on. Also, they seem to like to push apps down to my phone. Just got something called sprint id the other day (just showed in the notification bar that it was installed). But I don't even see that in my app manager.
Sorry if this has been discussed before. I just can't find it anywhere.
Is anybody having any Wi-Fi issues with their S8? What is happening for me, is that, I connect to my home private Wi-Fi network. Then 10 seconds later the network completely disconnects. Then approximately 10-20 seconds later it reconnects again. It keeps doing it over and over and over, non stop in a cycle. So I completely disconnected from my Wi-Fi, and I'm using my 4G LTE. I started noticing this at home, but then as I go to other to other Wi-Fi networks it's he same issue.
I even did a factory reset to the phone because of this issue and a home button vibration issue, where the vibration would not stop even in standby mode. It was also causing the Android OS settings to even be disabled, and not let me go into the OS serttings from the Android OS taskbar menu button, or the button for the settings in the app drawer. The factory reset did fix the vibration issue, but it didn't fix the Wi-Fi issue at all.
Also, is anybody else having this exact specific Wi-Fi issue I'm having?
Thanks in advance for all the answers and feedback!

I already am up to date with all the apps in the Play Store and the Samsung store. I even contacted Samsung, and the woman on the phone on her own just completely connected me to a manager without saying a word to me. The manager ended up saying that he never heard of this and made a bug report so they could look into it. It's also not in their system, according to this manager. This was today around 5PM EST
It could be a hardware issue. Have you thought about exchanging it?

I already did. This is the second device to have the Wi-Fi issue. I just received my replacement device in the mail today around 4PM EST, which is the device I'm talking about here.
The thing I'm thinking is, that maybe if I went back to the direct cell phone providers store and did a buyer's remorse exchange. It could just be a batch of phones that have the same issue. Which more than one from the batch could be located at the same store. But since I'm in Florida, and the replacement device came from somewhere in Pennsylvania it's a completely different batch. Which the Samsung manager agreed with me. He even told me what I already know, that even if Samsung tests the phone. People in the real world using the phone, may encounter issues that Samsung never found on their own. He also went on to say that it's vital, that people in general, especially people that are tech savvy and semi tech savvy call in, because with us calling in it can help fix the issues that Samsung may have never encountered on our own. The manager also said, that there can be more people with the same exact issue, they just never called in and reported it like I have.

What kind of router are you using? Have to tried another? Go to a Starbucks, or some other free WiFi spot and test. So far with you it's been a 100% issue. I'd start looking at different things.

Like I said in one of the above post, that I noticed it at home first. But as I used other Wi-Fi's I noticed it was an ongoing issue. I've tired my home private Network, my work private network, and at a few friends houses.
The manager from Samsung, honestly believes that it is a Android OS bug.
Ah ok. I missed that. Easy to do when on the go. [emoji3]

It's not a big deal, I completely understand. So what else do you think I should try?
I also have issues with Wi-Fi similar to yours, if anyone has a solution, please let me know
Have you made sure that in settings you have a tick on "Keep wifi on durring sleep" ? Also for the sake of it, switch off "battery optimization" for all apps and see how it behaves. Also make sure you swithch off the option "smart network switch" under WiFi settings. What your phone is probably doing is constantly trying to switch between the WiFi and mobile data, or the power management puts it in sleep to preserve battery.
Well instead of getting the same same old suggestions (which Im sure you tried, all of them) you can read thru them all here in the thread that already exists:

Honestly what's probably going to happen is, we're going to have to wait for an OTA update.

Keep Wi-Fi on during sleep is activated. But it has nothing to do with that because my phone goes to standby mode in 30 seconds. While as soon as I connect to the Wi-Fi network, 10 seconds later it completely disconnects me. Then 10-20 seconds later it reconnects me. Then it repeats the same thing over and over. The phone can be completely in use, or it can be in standby mode, the same problem still occurs. Also the same thing goes for battery optimization, while it's on and off.
It also appears that someone else on the first page is having similar Wi-Fi issues. So maybe, a few of the many mass produced phones are having Wi-Fi issues. So maybe it's really an OS bug like the manager from Samsung on the phone yesterday was telling me.
Hi All, even am having a same problem, am here in Saudi Arabia and when i spoke to samsung Persons they are not showing an exact root of the problem and not even willing to exchange my mobile. this issue is with my mobile since 3 months and am waiting for upadte , i got 2 updates till now but none solved my wifi problem, i donno what to do
I can say this only happens to me when I have Bluetooth on and my watch connected and when I'm on a 2.4 signal vs a 5....and if by chance is your phone with sprint or verizon?
