Hello all,
Quick question. Is anyone losing Google Sync / Data when on Wifi ?
Happens at home and work. Never had an issue with my GS3 or One X. On cell service it works fine.
update 11/24
Seems as though its a pretty widespread issue. Also , it is an issue with the connection it self, not just google sync.
I opened up a "google issue" , if you are having the same problems I recommend posting on the thread. It can be found here:

I have the exact same problem. But it only happens at home. At home we've wep and at work wpa2. Never had an issue with my GS2. On cell service it works fine for me too.
Is android 4.2 incompatible with 128-bit WEP???
This is driving me nuts! Any ideas community??

I've noticed this too but seems to only be when the phone is sleeping? I'll turn screen on and bars will be gray and then turn blue. Did you guys turning off wifi optimization in wifi settings? I might try that next. It's some sort of power saving

hey guys,
I actually put in a google issue that seems to be picking up some steam.
http://code.google.com/p/android/issues/detail?id=40065
I have no clue what causes it at this point. It doesnt happen on all networks. Happens on my work network which is open / unsecured.
Also does it on my inlaws network which is wpa2 encrypted. However my home network which is also wpa2 encrypted is fine.
I recommend posting on the google issue to raise awareness
I added my experience, it seems to me like it's keeping wifi alive but not the Google connection. I have no issues on a Nexus 7 running 4.2 so it's not my router either but could be something specific to Nexus 4 hardware. I might try changing wifi sleep policy to never to see if at least this way HSPA will be connected when screen is off.

Anybody not having this issue? It's really annoying and for some reason even if I set wifi to stay on when plugged in or never it takes forever to disconnect so I still don't get alerts. Definitely appears to be an issue with 4.2 so i guess we just have to wait and hope it is fixed in next update.

It's happening to me both with my N4 on 4.2 and also with my Transformer Prime, recently updated to 4.1.1. Only on specific networks.

It actually happens to me on both new Nexus 4 and Nexus 7. Happens on home network (WPA2).
Any chance this could be a Google server issue? My Nexus 7 on 4.2 and GS3 running CM10 4.1.2 doesn't have issue either just my Nexus 4. Not sure what's causing it on my Nexus 4 but it's driving me crazy.
Sent from my Nexus 7 using Tapatalk 2
I'm pretty sure this is a general Wifi issue, and not limited to Google services. I've noticed that when the Wifi goes to sleep, I no longer receive incoming calls in GrooveIP or Sipdroid. I also don't receive email alerts until I turn on the screen, and the wifi re-activates.
EDIT: I ran a simple test. Loaded GrooveIP, called GV # from another phone, GrooveIP rang. Let the phone sit for 10 minutes to fall asleep. Called again. Didn't ring. I then loaded up Advanced Wifi Lock to prevent the phone from going asleep. The first call worked, and so did the one after 10 minutes. So, this definitely seems like an issue that impacts any service depends on a reliable Wifi link - not just Google's Sync services. I ran the same test with Sipdroid, and got identical results.

That's a bad example because GrooveIP uses GTalk on the backend so you're still using Google Services. What makes this more puzzling is I went to a Brooklyn Nets game last night and they have crazy fast open WiFi at the place while my phone was connected, it appears that all notifications worked even when the screen was off. I was too busy watching the game to pay much attention but I did get emails, etc. while the screen was off and I was on Wifi. The main difference between that WiFi and my home Wifi is the one at the arena had no security at all.
I've been playing around with my router and tweaking settings but nothing is working and I'm pretty sure this is a phone software issue. What I want to find is someone with 4.2 on a Nexus 4 who is NOT having an issue. I'm starting to wonder if this is an app or Google Service sync related issue.
My Nexus 7 running 4.2 does NOT have any issue on the same exact Wifi so I'm wondering if it's some app or setting on my phone that's causing this
For me it definitely seems to occur more on unsecured networks.
Not only is it google sync but the connection in general.
Anybody with this issue brave enough to try a factory reset? If it doesn't get solved soon I'll probably flash CWM recovery, do a nandroid and then do a factory reset to see if that fixes it. At least that way if it doesn't I can restore backup.
Anyone want to try now?

Weird! So you did a factory reset and still nothing? Did you still have the issue before you restored apps? I mean like completely stock with just what comes on the phone. If you still have the issue with that, then we know it's not app related.
I might also try downloading and reflashing the system image...maybe something got screwed up in the 4.2 update??

Strange then that it might fix this issue since the wifi module is stored in system and he's not overwriting it so something in the kernel itself

Hey guys,
Just want to see if anyone else has noticed an issue that has happened to me a couple times. My n4 "loses" its network connection for both received calls and sms.
Status bars indicate a good signal (no hollow triangle) and data works fine during these events. I first noticed when my neighbor came by telling me he sent me a couple messages which I never received although I had been playing with the phone all day.
After rebooting I received many sms and voicemail message indications.
The scary part is there is no way to know when it's happening. There is no indication of lost signal and data service continues to works fine - all calls just go straight to VM and no SMS or VM notifications are delivered.
Any ideas? should I return/exchange it? Thanks for any help.
here's me:
network is Tmo (happened in 2 different cities)
network status bars indicate good signal
data service continues to work ok (3g/4g)
stock, not rooted, phone is only 3 weeks old
still on 4.2.1
I've had this happen to me once don't know why though.

At first I suspected the light flow app because this happened right after installing the app. I thought maybe the app was messing with the notifications so I uninstalled it - but then problem happened again. Also, many people are using the app with no issues so i suspect my phones radio is at fault.
I think I'll RMA it. Thanks!
Crap, i just left Sprint after 11 years of service with them for the exact same reason. Started mid December and by mid Jan and several Network Trouble tickets they had no clue how to fix it and blamed it on network congestion. End of Jan i officially ported to TMO.. Hope this doesnt happen to me again..
I started a thread with similar problems, but I also loose data connection. I get a message on the notification bar about it.
In my case it only happens if I turn wifi on and leave HSPA running, so I have to switch to 2g only for the problem to disappear.
Called Tmobile and they have no clue what is causing the problem.

I wouldn't worry too much about it. I've used tmo for years and never had this problem before - only with the nexus 4 the last couple weeks. If this type of issue was more wide spread I think there would be more people complaining about missed calls/txt.
It sure makes me paranoid though. I am now calling my phone a couple times per day (from my work phone) and sending myself SMS messages just to be sure my phone is working.
I just updated to 4.2.2 so maybe that will help. If it happens again I'll exchange it.

What type of notification do you get? In my case there is no notificaion, the only way to tell if its happening is to place a test call or sms from another phone.
I do notice it occurs after heavy HSPA use but I havent been able to duplicate the problem. It's almost as if after heavy use of an HSPA channel the MSC location update is purged - so all calls go straight to voice mail and sms messages are queded in the SMSC (just a guess). Then after flight mode toggle or reboot location update occurs and all is good.
It happened again yesterday so I've gone ahead an ordered a replacement.
I get a triangle notice in the notification bar. And I narrow my problem with my location.
Did you ordered a new phone?

Which baseband are you on?
I was on the latest 4.2.2 update with the old .33 baseband and I couldn't make or receive calls. To be more specific, my phone was mute as the call was going through. I could not hear the ringing tone. So I flashed the new .48 baseband and it worked.
Well, what I experience sometimes is:
When I leave a WiFi connection, the phone (sometimes) wouldn't reconnect to mobile data (I can only receive calls atm). In order to reconnect it, I have to toggle airplane mode.
Kinda the opposite, but maybe the same solution can be proposed?
My temp solution is to switch to 2g only and turn on wifi. That seems to do the trick
As for baseband I'm rooted with stock rom 4.2.2 and CMW recovery

Hi does anyone have issues with sending messages in whatsapp with the nexus 4?
One issue I have only experienced after getting the nexus 4 is quite often messages take a while to send.
I have attached a screenshot.
As you can see its 5:45pm, I have messages I sent at 5:43pm and 5:44pm, and still have not sent yet.
When I first noticed this issue I thought at first it was a issue with my data, but as you can see here I am still receiving messages so my data connection is obviously ok.
I didn't have this issue with the One X or the Galaxy S3, I am still using the same sim and provider. This is getting very frustrating.
I have also noticed a couple of times that I have closed whatsapp not noticing it hasn't sent and only to find a bit later after opening whatsapp again that the messages still haven't sent!
Try.... taking your sim out and in, upgrading to 4.2.2, test in wifi and 2g mode
Check your network...sometime it is the culprit.
I have no problem in China and HK but when I went to Indonesia last month it was behaving same as yours.
Initially I thought it's my phone. The data signal is full but message sent was slow and at time you received several messages at the same time.
I'm back in HK and experience none of this now
PS.
Network = 2G/3G....try to test it with reliable wifi
Used to happen a lot with 4.1.2 but since I flashed PA's rom, this issue has been solved, thankfully!
thanks for the replies, I've noticed it wasn't happening in wifi but I am still using the same sim as the one X and S3, so its not likely to be an issue with the provider.
I have updated to 4.2.2 and it is still happening.
This is starting to seem like an issue with whatsapp and the stock rom?
Have you tried cleaning the sim?
I am having this exact same issue.
I also seem to get s load of whatsapp messages through at once when the the phone has been sleeping for quite a while (even on WiFi)
Which provider are you with?
I'm currently on a orange (ee) contract

I think this could have to do with what network you are on.

that's related to wifi, and while the messages don't sent I am able to receive messages,
Has anybody reported this bug to Google and WhatsApp? They should both be informed, because we can't know whose fault this is.
I am from HK and useing PCCW too , i am using QQ2013 , and it also show cannot send message :silly:
I am on PCCW in Hk Too, I do face this issue sometimes. It takes a while to send a wtsapp msg. Besides wtsapp. There are also some issue in using mobile network. Sometimes when I want to use the network, The H logo shows full reception. but without the "loading arrow" besides it, So that the pages doesn't load. I have to solve it by turning off the data and reopen, Then, The "loading arrow" appears and the network back to normal.
That's annoying
Uh oh, I'm seeing a pattern here. I'm in HK on CMHK.
Though WhatsApp message-sending is the big issue for me, it seems like there's some lag/timeout when browsing the web as well.
Experiencing t same issue on watsapp as well as the browser. It seems t ping is really slow. At times need to reload the page. Also it is not specific to browser. It happens with different apps. T network all t time is full. However not yet noticed anything like tat on wifi.
Any clue to fix t issue. Its really annoying.
Thanks

I have the same problem on Telenor in Sweden.
I have noticed that, when I have a message waiting to be sent. If I start the web browser and reload a page and return to Whatsapp it has been sent. I can reproduce this problem 100%.
So the problem doesn't seem to be network related. I would imagine we get a bug fixed Whatsapp soon.

I suspect there's an OS problem. WhatsApp may be able to work around the issue (tricking the OS into getting its act together and sending the packets that need to go out), but it's Google that needs to release a fix.
I just created a bug report here: https://code.google.com/p/android/issues/detail?id=52260&thanks=52260&ts=1362026130
Star it if you want to be notified of developments (and show Google that you care about the problem).
I added a comment to the bug report you made, but I'll post my experience here as well. I find that sometimes the phone doesn't switch from 3G to HSPA when it needs to. It happens to me in WhatsApp but also on other apps like Twitter or Facebook, where I send a message or refresh the feed, and it just stays stuck there. No data is transmitted, so it doesn't even switch from 3G to HSPA. Eventually it seems to "wake up" and realizes there's something requesting a connection and it goes through.
Are there anyone feel that there are some delays when you receive hangouts message on nexus 4 from other device?
I tested out there are no problem on HTC one x and iPhone.
Thanks.

There are universally delayed notifications on the Nexus 4 when on Wi-Fi. I find that hangouts, as well as messages from services like WhatsApp are delayed on WiFi. That said, hangouts seems to be quicker and instant when on mobile data than WhatsApp for me, which can be a bit slow.
Yes, you are right. I tested out when Wi-Fi is turned on.
Is that kind of software or hardware problem?

FYI - I have no such issues on wifi or 3G.
One suggestion is maybe it's your wifi network being of "poor" connection so your phone (temporarily) stops using it. There's a setting in advance to disable it.

Just wanted to point out that it's not totally universal, it seems to be dependent on the exact type of WiFi hardware being used.

Same here. For me WiFi or gsm data makes no difference. I get missed video calls 30 mins after the call was actually made, and usually only receive messages 30+ minutes after they're sent. It seems the service is only instant if I'm actively using my phone.
I have the occasional delay on What'sApp, but it's far, far worse on Hangouts. This makes Hangouts worse than useless... since people see that I haven't read the message 30 mins later and end up calling/txting anyway.
I have the exact same problem. Thought It was because of WiFi but it happens on data as well

I just hope Google fix this notification problem on the Nexus 4.
Otherwise I am jumping ship from the Nexus line (for the first time since the 1st Nexus came out) and possibly buying a SGS4 (yuk, but least it should work).

can you give me some more details?? are you on stock or root??? did the problem get solved forever whether on stock rom or any custom rom???
After the update of Hangouts to 1.1 and the 4.3 update the problem seems to be solved, at least for the moment.
if its that you guys arent getting messages when the screen is off, raise your voltage at 384mhz to 800mV or higher. if the issue was the delayed notifications with the screen off, than this should fix it.
So I am seeing this issue increasing on daily basis. My phone is usually in my pocked (not in doze) or some times lying around on the desk (dozed/not dozed, but still notification should deliver late). But I have noticed that in both situations, I don't receive any notification until I actually turn on the screen. As soon as I turn the screen on, notifications start to come in all together.. (around 4-5 notification comes together). It seems that they were pending to be delivered but were never delivered to the device until I woke it up and data connection restored.
I understand that in doze mode, notifications are delayed but are delivered, but in my situation they are not even delivered until I turn on the screen and wait a couple to 5 seconds.
A few P.S.
- I am on Stock Android without anykind of root (systemless or regular).
- I don't have any kind of advanced battery saving mode on or app installed (greenify or clean master etc).
- I don't have battery optimization for whatsapp still no notification comes in :crying:
- I see it on both Wifi and LTE..
- Cellular notifications like sms, mms or calls are not affected with this issue, they come on time.

The thread doesn't just cover gmail. If you look past the title, they are working on fixing issues relating to push notifications in general. Gmail was just the first app reported as having issues. Push notifications currently aren't functioning correctly on the 6P. Google is working to fix the issue. If you actually google notifications not showing up on 6P, quite a few news articles and Android forums will give you the same answer I was trying to give you.
I only experience this when I turn my phone on first thing in the morning, otherwise no.
I have notification issues on almost every Android phone, when on WiFi. It seems to be a known issue but been around/unresolved forever.
I use an app called DNSet, it runs automatically at startup and fixes this issue.

Thanks for the suggestion, i'll try it myself.. and report back.
Right now I am using Push Notification Fixer and results are really mixed. It works sometimes and others are as bad as no notification for minutes or hours until screen is turned on.
Please update following defect at google bug tracker stating you are also experiencing this issue.

Well, also if I have another phone (an Xperia) with Nougat 7.1.1 I have the same issue, which I also faced on older version of Android (eg on a Wiko Rainbow Jam with Lollipop)

I know you said it's happening on both LTE and Wi-Fi, but many people look past their carrier / geographic location as the culprit. Please update your XDA profile with that information. Everyone should have this most basic information in their profile. Thanks.
