wont work, the reason is the kernel... with unhelpfuls you can put in a custom script to make it work.
Read his thread before downloading and installing stuff blindly

when you say "it" doesn't work, do you mean flashing the kernel didn't work or that the kernel is working fine but that mobile AP still doesn't start?
if it's simply mobile AP, make sure you copy over the init.d script to the correct place

yeah i get the new kernel showing up when i install it through clockwork, says, "alice" something in about phone. but when i launch mobileap i get a blank screen.

ok, I literally just answered this. but if you want it spelled out for you, follow my instructions here:
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showpost.php?p=7986757&postcount=123

so is it possible to use the stock captivate kernel, jm5 fw, and this init.d script, mobileap will work? or is it necessary to install unhelpful kernel?

The unhelpful kernel is what allows the init.d stuff to run- so yes, you need the unhelpful kernel

+1 for reason

thank you guys. u guys are the best for clearing things up.

his current release (near the bottom of the post) is flashable through clockwork, I don't know how to build it for odin, but I'm not quite sure why you would either

well, i have a custom update.zip so that i can install my rom as clean as possible while putting in custom designed apks and wallpaper. i odin back to stock then to jm5 before i install my update.zip.
if i had the 1.2 kernel as a tar file, i could easily put it along the pit file when i flash odin without having to go through the rom manager process.

Enlighten Me...

I'm running AOSP JK2 1.1 and I was wondering if I can flash the JI6 modem on this? And if flashing the modem is just like flashing a rom.
Also, if I flash voodoo lagfix, how do I undo it? Thanks so much!!!!!

Yeah JI6 modem should be compatible but don't quote me.
To undo Voodoo Lagfix simply put a file called disable lagfix into the voodoo folder on your sd card.

Thanks!!! And I'm assuming this "voodoo" folder will be present once I flash voodoo lagfix? And god forbid something goes wrong can I still ODIN back to stock everything if for some reason I can't uninstall voodoo or the JI6 modem messes it up?
I would stay away from the voodoo lag fix. It can cause alot of problems. Try one of Eugenes universal lag fix kernels. They're super fast, overclockable using set cpu and you don't need to undo the lag fix when you flash another rom.

Stock Kernel

I would like to know how to flash the stock kernel before I flash he 2.2 update.
My computer cannot recognize my phone, so I cannot use odin.
Are there any other methods to flash the stock kernel?

where does it say how to flash back to stock kernel? I'm already on stock rom
Sorry, I guess that wasn't the right link. I dont think you can flash the stock kernel via clockwork. What issues are you having with odin?
None I cant use it because my comeputer wont recognize my phone through usb.
I just want to use stock kernel before updated to 2.2

Just flash the stock ROM in clockwork, it includes the kernel

can you use a different kernel installed when updating to 2.2

I dont see why not since the kernel is going to be overwritten by the new update anyways
Thanks.

New User, looking for some help

Hi all, new user here and looking for some help.
Im using an unrooted Samsung Galaxy S Froyo 2.2 and I want to root it so that I can install an app that allows me to pick which screen is my home screen.
I downloaded the i9000 1-click root and everytime I get to the recovery mode, I select update.zip but it never updates and gives me an error something like:
E:\ Signature Verifaction Failed
Update aborted
(sorry if it isnt correct, at work at the moment)
Anyway, my baseband version is I9000NEJP2 and my kernel build number is FROYO.NEJP5
Does anyone have any tips for me as the only phone I have ever rooted was the G1 and that took me quite a while to work out what to do.
Thanks in advance,
Standard problem.
You need to flash a kernel that supports clockwork recovery. Check the i9000 forum for kernel related threads (speedmod or cf-root). If you don't know hours to use odin, check the reference guide thread in the general forum.
Why don't you just install z4root?

That app simply roots the phone. Instead, you need a solution to replace 3e recovery with 2e. Those are two different things.
I just searched up on that cf-root thing and do I need to have something called ODIN installed before I flash my kernel?

Yes. CF-Root is installed via Odin. The CR-Root thread includes some instructions on how to flash it.
Read the reference guide on how to use Odin/where to find it.
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=723596
Personally, I use the SpeedMod kernel because it has Clockwork recovery already included. The SpeedMod author also has a great tutorial on how to install it.
SpeedMod thread
SpeedMod installation guide
SpeedMod download (just pick the SpeedMod K12I with HZ=256 version.

[Q] Can I root without custom kernel

Hi I have an I9000 and I have upgraded the OS to 2.3.5 using the stock firmware from samfirmwares.com I think it is using Odin. The question I have and I have googled it and searched and read this and many other forums is can I root my I9000 without flashing CWM and a customer kernal?
On my 10.1 tab I just have a zip file I drop in root and reboot to the recovery menu and update it and it's done. I want the same for my I9000 (just for Titanium backup and SU) and I want to stay on the stock rom.
Thanks
Brian
Nop that isn't possible!
Only way to root 2.3.5 is flashing a custom kernel.

Yes,you can...

It is not a single-click process but two.
First of all use CF(the least complicated kernel) that applies to JVS to obtain root(from here http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=788108 ) and then flash the stock kernel(from perkas stash-- http://perka.zapto.org ).The result would be your phone has root and only the stock kernel.
Best wishes.
Thanks thats what I wanted I'll do that then. Why do you flash twice though? why CF then perka?
Thanks for your help

Twice because----
1)the CF would root your phone
and since you don't want anything other than the native/original kernel,
2)flash the kernel as suggested.
You could as well not go for the second flash but simply remove the minor tweaks and reboot for them to be removed.
No big deal/difference really.

KJ2 Rooting (which method?)

Hi Peeps
I see there is no CFroot for this yet, can it be rooted safely with any other methods?
I have done the super one click before but also couldn't find an insecure kernel
for this also?
Thanks
You could flash hardcore's speedmod kernel with kj2 http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1182498
Already rooted and ready to go. Its what I'm currently using.
Root with cfroot for, say,ki8, then flash stock kernel back with cwm app or any of the other kernel flashing apps for root users (since root is really files in /system, root stays, but you do lose the cwm recovery when flashing stock kernel back).
Of course there are probably not many actual kernel changes between the different 2.3.5 offerings, so you could keep running the ki8 kernel on the kj1/2 rom with no noticeable impact.
Sent from my GT-I9100 using XDA App
there is a new root method out there (zergRush) which seems to be independent from what version you are running and be fast and easy.
it wont come with a recovery though and has not been tested on many SGS2 until now
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1321538
most of you dont understand, for root you have to look the number that is phone not PDA.
thus the newest KJ2 is using XXKI4 Phone thus requires cfroot of XXKI4.
its always like that and its always what users didnt get.
plus doesnt matter what cfroot you use if at the end you want to flash stock kernel, or some other kernel, only if you want to stay, than try to find exact match for just in case thing, otherwise doesnt matter.

Bu11sh1t. You are total wrong!!!
i have rooted using speedmod on kj1 firmware.
however, the cwm app is not available on phone, thought the recovery portion is available if i do volup+power+select.
can anyone share the cwm.apk from cf-root?

I make kernels to be able to make root on the devices, I would hope I understand what version is what and which it matches.

Im running XWKJ1 with the KI8 CF-Root, no problems noticed.
