I was going to call the OP (don't you dare ask....) some nasties until I did a search of "SOD" in the forums and Googled "Android SOD".....nothing at all defining SOD, so here it is - ready? SCREEN OF DEATH!! .
So there we have it - literacy in a jar(head).
i know where it is , in the general section

SOD is your worst nightmare. It is what keeps HD2 android users up at night. SOD has detroyed families and can bring even the most hardened, and diligent smartphone user to his knees and make him or her want to prostrate before the android gods and beg for forgiveness.
This "disease" will cause you to lock yourself in a room for days and make you feel like Russell Crowe from a "A beautiful Mind".
Trust me, you dont want it.

Haha,your funny.Couldn't said it better.
It is probably caused by some errors on the SD Card but also it might be the amount of free memory left on it.
I was having some SODs on my old 8Gb card on which I had only 600Mb of free space(with Android).
So I made a FULL FAT32 Format(not a quick one which is simply delete) to remove all the unnecessary files. At first it worked but after adding some files and as the free memory was getting smaller the SODs returned back.So I switched to 16Gb card.
Always think of letting one third of the SD card free and if you need this capacity just switch to a new card.
Don't know if my SODs where caused be the amount of free space or some errors on the SD though.

I got SODs with certain builds. The thing that worked for me was switching to a new radio. After I switched, I haven't had one SOD on any of the builds I have tried.
Try installing radio 2.12.50. It worked for me.
Stormtroopers of Death, more commonly known as S.O.D., was a crossover thrash band formed in New York in 1985. They are commonly credited as being among the first bands to fuse hardcore punk with thrash metal into a style sometimes called "crossover thrash". Their 1985 debut album was the Headbanger's Ball intro anthem for many years.
They have also been a subject of controversy due to their politically-incorrect lyrics. S.O.D. member Dan Lilker has stated: "The lyrics were never intended to be serious, just to piss people off."

HAHA nice.
Actually this is not such a bad question to ask. There seems to be many posters using the SOD term a bit too widely, indicating they do not know the definition of SOD. It is important to be able to differentiate between different problems with the Android builds, so people can relate.
SOD = Sleep Of Death. Not Screen of death or anything else. When your device is sleeping and you try to wake it using any hardware button, you will not get any reaction from your device. You will not see any image on the screen.
When I wake my device, I get to the lock screen but the screen is totally unresponsive to touch, is this SOD? No, it is not. The unresponsiveness might be temporary due to the accelerometer overload defect, or due to the wifi-sleep defect (in wich case it it is not so obvious that the device will in fact be responsive in due time if you just keep it from falling back to sleep by using e.g. hardware buttons repeatedly). In the end, you managed to wake your device and get a picture on the screen, this is not the sleep of death.
My device crashes in the middle of something, e.g. it hangs when I turn on wifi, is this SOD? No.
For example newer kernels seem to have the wifi-sleep defect for users with wifi-mac starting with 00:xx:... and there seems to be lots of people regarding the symptoms (the unresponsiveness of the lock-screen) as SOD.

Hey
thanks for bringing this thread up and thanks for all the answers so far.
I keep having the SOD's with the new Jelly Bean Roms on NativeSD. I am not quiet sure what it is and I would like to ask for help as well.
My Card:
32 gb Sandisk UHS1 ----- 1st part: 25.5 GB Fat32 ------- 2nd part 4 GB Ext3
I reformatted it already and also defragmented and checkdisked (as noellenchris stated in the linked thread). Those did not help.
My Phone:
MagLdr 1.13 and Radio 2.08
I use WP7 on nand with a different SD card which is formatted for that purpose.
If you have any more suggestions please let me know.
It happens so often that I keep my HD2 working by playing music with sound turned off all the time I guess it doesn't go to sleep then...
Oh and if you cannot help me, I would like to ask you for a different favor:
Please don't answer with "funny" comments.
thanks!

Did you ever try a plain Class 4 or 6 card like Sandisk instead of a UHS-I, designed for video and which cannot be properly supported by the hd2?

This is a pointless poll since:
1) There is no way to conclusively link a failed sdcard to a particular thing. Could just be a defect.
2) We are dealing with extended periods of time. The longer it is that people use sdcards for swapping, the worse their state will become and the more failures will result.
3) Failure rate will (must) relate to use. Though some people will have swap enabled, they may not even actually use it.
4) Most people are morons (sad truth) who will likely screw up so bad that they *think* they're using swap when they really aren't.

wow you just completely raped this thread
Not on my G1, but I ran a swap file on a SD card in my old Zarus PDA. The card lasted about 2 years before I started getting sector errors. I use my G1 far more then the Zarus, so I keep my G1 backed up. Not like that is hard. MyBackup for the apps and any data, and I just dump the FAT32 part to a USB drive once a month or so.

Handling of flash memory degradation also varies between sd card manufacturer, meaning some sd cards will detect bad blocks and remove them from the block pool while others won't. Furthermore, even if a block has been damaged by excessive writes, a user may not even notice it due to the memory card writing to other areas.
I think the poll is useful
The poll results so far show, that most users haven't noticed problems with their SD cards using the swap file. It is hard to predict how many writes will happen and how loaded the swap file will be due to different settings (swappiness, swap file size etc.). I'm actually using linux swap partition but I wanted to make a more general poll so everyone using this method could give their experience. Calling most users morons kinda makes you one though...

[ot]I am not calling you or any particular person a moron. Sad truth of the world is that despite the religious and socialist propaganda, everybody is different and of varying levels of intellect. A very few people stand out as exceptional, a whole lot can be called smart, and then you have the vast armies of mindless idiots who live day to day by doing what somebody else tells them to do -- usually badly. They neither understand what they are doing, nor do they even care to understand. If you tell them to push that button, they'll push that button and have no clue what it does. I am truly sorry if this offends your sensibilities.[/ot]
For the last 6 weeks I've had nothing but headaches between two T-Mobile HD2's. I bought on release date, 3 days later I was better off tossing it in the freezer because all it would do is freeze. It also lagged, was buggy and a glitch fest. Apps didnt work, screen didn't work, Sense UI wouldn't load ugh, I can go on. I got another HD2, within the first 7 hours it froze on me too lol. It also had the same issues as the first.
I just want to thank everybody here in the forums for helping solve my phone issue, as I've research and tried everything but they did not help. Also thanks to HTC and T-mobile.com for putting up with my madness lol, although T-Mobile allowed me to get my OG plan back (and keep my HD2), I can now leave T-Mobile (im under no contract) to get something else (leaning towards the Evo 4G over the Nexus One).
P.S. I hope T-Mobile gets there act together and releases a patch ASAP, it sucks that such a incredible piece of hardware is having a lot of problematic issues.
that's weird,I assume you were on stock rom which is why u got the issues...custom roms eliminate those issues u have on stock rom.
i dont think it's so much the stock ROM, mine's been wonderful with the stock ROM. it's more that he was unlucky enough to be one of the first bozos who got the phone with version 2.10. for me, rom version 2.11 has been nothing but bliss, so much that after trying several custom roms i went back to my stock 2.11 because, compared to it, all custom roms suck (winmo devs aren't as good as android devs).
there's a thread with stock roms and 2.11 is usable even without hspl (i kept hspl out of personal preference and I'll try to make my own build). good luck to you anyway. i suggest you get a nexus one and flash desire rom (or heck, get a desire)
If it is freezing, the first setting I would check is
Start > Settings > Menu > All Settings > Today > Items
The setting "Today timeout", at the bottom left hand corner,
should not be selected/enabled.
why shouldnt the today timeout be selected, just out of curiosity?

this is xdas not fan pandering to overly zealous delusional users that are so far up steve jobs craw they can see his prostate...I mean seriously what the frick???
And I admit for 80% of errors it is brought on by the user and not the device itself. The hd2 has its flaws. All phones do...but for most users they are iphone/android converts expecting the same experience without doing any research on htc and windows mobile. And to those users, yes I say they do deserve any error they get. Why? You didn't take time to learn about your device. This isn't something as simple as a flashlight where you press the on button and something magically happens. Its a pocket pc and that means a lot...

Wanted to give EVO 4G owners/potential owners a heads up regarding a pretty serious issue with the included SD cards - have a look: Is HTC EVO 4G About To Be Launched With A Massive Defect In The Included 8GB MicroSD Card?
Oh great. I should've waited for things like this to develop before preordering. Hope it's nothing major.
To be fair, it wouldn't be a true HTC phone without some sort of major defect.
haven't had any problems
It could be a destructive application.

Really hope this doesn't become a major problem.
I don't consider a SD card problem a "massive defect". If it was the slot or the phone then yes. I'm sure HTC will replace the cards no problem. I already have my own card so? Why you people seem to be freaking out of this its nothing. BIG DEAL.

Well it may not be the cards that is the problem. It could be a hardware issue where due to the awkward positioning of the card the phone doesn't read it sometimes, which would be a significant problem that would near impossible to fix.
I haven't experienced any problems.
I use my own 16GB card and dont have any problems. Maybe the shipped card is bad - but it is not a device deffect.
I had that exact same problem with a 4gb card from microcenter in my hero until one day, it completely died. After I replaced the card, the problem went away. It's probably just the card.

I remember the 5/19 engadget review mentioned:
"The microSD card lives underneath the battery, so we'd probably recommend just getting a nice big one (good luck finding a 32GB!) and leaving it put -- especially since HTC has chosen one of the most unusual slot designs we've ever seen on a phone. Basically, the card rests loosely in a trench and is secured using a plastic peg overhead; press it down to hold the card in place. A fingernail is enough to pop the peg up again, and the card just falls right out. It's such a bizarre design that we can only assume it was necessitated (versus, say, a conventional spring-loaded slot) by virtue of the EVO's tightly-packed circuitry. Nothing a good, old-fashioned teardown won't definitively answer, we're sure."
So is this a hardware or officially resolved software or combo issue or will we not really know until after the June 4th launch (asks an eager beaver)?

First of all, we still don't know what the issue is exactly - hardware, software, or a combination of the two.
And if the problem is widespread, new EVO users, who may not be tech savvy or have spare SD cards, will not be happy and this is the publicity HTC doesn't need.
And finally, if it is a bad batch, I'd like to know how HTC plans to address it and what we would need to do to get the fix.
I have seen this issue with my evo. I will test out 4gb card and see if the issue goes away.
No issues for me.

I have an EVO from the I/0. I re-formatted the card before I put anything on it and haven't had any problems with it.
No issues with my nexus one 4 gb card. I will try formatting the 8 gb and try again.

Geez...It's a freaking storage card. You gotta love the hysteria that results when a story is headlined with the words "Massive Defect".
A massive defect would be "half the screen goes dead when used in temps of 70 F or higher" or "phone bricks when you install a memory manager".

Again, if you bothered to read the article or prior posts before commenting, you'd know that nobody knows the root of the problem. It is not necessarily a faulty storage card. It could also be a problem with the hardware where the memory card does not stay connected to the phone, which would be a major issue, and replacing the memory card would not solve it. I know I'd be very upset if every time I wanted to take a picture the phone told me there was no available memory card to save it to. It also could be a software problem, which hopefully should not be too difficult to solve.
According to a poster on the Android forums,
"I contacted sprint about this problem tonight, they told me they knew about it already. Sprint said the only phones that have this problem are the ones that google gave to their employees and to the reviewers. It was a software issue, apparently the issue was only with the first 2,000 phones google gave out. With the phones being released on June 4th, the software issue is resolved. I am switching form the Crap pre to the HTC Evo 4G, and I am glad to now be a part of Android Forums. Thanks guys and have a good night."
http://androidforums.com/htc-evo-4g...sappearing-defect-included-8gb-microsd-2.html
So let's hope that is the case, but who knows how reliable either the guy is or the person he talked to at Sprint. We'll have to wait and see if it happens to us.
Hello,
I have searched but found no answer.
After trying several NAND builds i have noticed that I have some horizontal sections (stripes) on my screen. (see picture)
They move up and down and sometimes seem to flicker.
When I change to an other screen the stripes are gone or moved.
Never seen this before.
What could this be ?
I am having this issue also. I flashed back to Win mo to see whether it was a Android related issue but I experience it in Win mo too. So I will have to contact HTC warrenty.

The digitizer is the touch sensitive part and probably unrelated to your issues, but still it's very likely a hardware issue. Flash back to WinMo, check if problem persists and return for warranty.
I have flashed back and problems exist. Intermittently may I add. How long does HTC take to repair handset?

I am awaiting for about 100 respondents then i make some stats and wil publish that on xda, or samsung has to pay me 10 million dollar and give every user their money back... but i dont expect that so i wil post the stats as soon as possible.
ATM i have 25 responses so its not possible to say something very interesting but this is my view atm.
- half is blue half is white. (earlyer i heard it would be only blue)
- most users say they didn't root
- most users reported that they notice some lags and bugs one or two weeks before the phone died.
ATM 40 respondents keep reporting :good:
This thread should be sticky as it is very important. Samsung should make public their problems which affecting more and more of us and fix it or atleast fix it for free when time comes no matter is under warranty or not, because is their fault and nobody paying 600euros/700$ for a phone should pay extra to get it fixed when is Samsung's fault.

But you are not alone as you may know.
When did you bought the phone?
If you filled in the form please do this extra question

69 Filled in forms keep reporting guys :good:
After this $am$ung will have to make an official statement and replace all faulty devices for free. Things like this are not acceptable from ,,smartphone of year''. Nothing to complain about the device i own 2 of them and i love them with all my heart and i cannot ask for more at the moment, but things like this should not happen. Only here are lots of dead phones, but who knows actually how many are out there from people who doesn't even know/access this forum? Samsung should take action about this ASAP, if not maybe we can do something more and get together some of us with affected devices and call samsung in court.
dimi22- Thank you in name of all ,,victims''

I totally agree with you, i hope everyone will keep reporting and i hope after cristmas and before newyear i have over 100 reports then i will step to the mainstream media and write a juicy press message about our findings about the ''phone of the year'' and how the ''great'' manufacturer NOT responds on this.
I think You should make the list public. With usernames of the victims...
Sent from my washing machine using its tumbler.

I will think of that, if i do that i first delete the email addresses of the respondents because that's privacy.
ATM i have 83 filled in forms so keep reporting if you didn't already do !
Very important thread!!
I think this one should be the leading thread for the sudden death phenomenon, or at least make sure every xda user who posted his case on the other thread, fill up his form.
Anybody knows perhaps how many S3 users are on XDA? This way we may estimate what is the percentage of S3 out there which got suicide.
OP - keep up the good work!

ATM i have 25 responses so its not possible to say something very interesting but this is my view atm.
- half is blue half is white. (earlyer i heard it would be only blue)
- most users say they didn't root
- most users reported that they notice some lags and bugs one or two weeks before the phone died.

Can we please have an update on the trends?
I have the Verizon variant and had major problems with mine suddenly. My phone would freeze and then not boot again. Flashing a rom would get it to work for a few minutes then it'd freeze again. I'd have to try to boot to recovery about 10 times before it would actually boot recovery (CWM). The phone would even exit odin mode during the middle of odin flashes. I got the phone replaced about a month ago. Pain in the butt though.
