My review of the x10 - XPERIA X10 General

Hi all,
I thought i would do a quick review of my experience so far with the x10. Little background i used to own an iphone and after ios 4 decided to switch to an android device. I liked the x10, mainly because of the hardware specs.
I must admit that my first few weeks with the phone it was a love hate relationship, but now i am hooked and cant wait for 2.1.
Things i like:
-the camera is incredible on this phone. Images come out crisp and look fantastic
-the phone is very speedy with the 1ghz processor and even with multiple apps open, i find it rarely lags
-Android apps, coming from iphone, i find there are actually great apps that are free, not just ones that make farting noises
-the gps and navigation is flawless!
-not that big or clunky, even with a 4 inch screen
Things that can be improved:
-faster os updates (or just any)
-i find the screen is sometimes not that responsive
I must say that now i am glad i stuck it out with this phone and kept it. I understand that there may be other android phones that are better, but this phone is definitely in the top 5. Going forward its Android for life! Id like to here what everyone else thinks. Pros/cons of the device.

How satisfied are u with X10?

i am planning to upgrade my X1 to X10...so i am on android platform
but also considering other android phones such as Milestone.
wanted to know how satisfied are u with X10 on a scale 1-10?
did u regret it at all? (unbiased answers pls)
Hows the performance compared to other phones in similar hardware class?
I have had a long list of handsets every single version of blackberry, iphone and this is my first android for about a week now and I'm really happy with it. It's a project phone to me, always finding new things with it and the apps and personalizing it are endless.
Quality of apps are not as great as the iphone but it's still a VERY new platform and getting better by the day.
Hardware wise I'm very impressed, very speedy, impressive camera quality and I'm pretty picky, 9/10 for form factor, could be rounded or something. Robust little device and I hope it's not outdated for at least 8 months.
looks 9/10
quality 8.9/10 - screen scratches easily, voice quality is great
hardware 9.9/10
overall I'd say 9.2/10 compare to an iphone of 8.9/10
i do like the phone a lot. with better software or onceroot is availible it will be worlds better.
camera is great wish it had a flash though. screen is great and big for typing.
not overly happy with battery life but after reading a few suggestions it is better.
once a firmware upgrade is out and an upgrade to a more recent version of android my mind might change more in favor of this device. right now it gets an 8 out of 10

I have just upgraded from X1 to X10 and I'm very impressed with the device.
Major drawback is low volume during calls.
Pluses definitely outweigh the minuses and the snapdragon 1 GHZ is lightning quick.
My opinion is go for it, you won't be disappointed.
Don't forget we are on first gen firmware which can only improve.

Ha~~ You are ask in right place,
I'm also upgrade from X1 to X10
Android is better than WM = =", Even my X1 use custom rom and faster than stock rom a 300%, but WM still lag, still ....ooxx
And My colleague have MileStone, Nexus One, Hero
But all colleagues want to get X10 when they see my X10 and play it a lot
Milestone is best for Rooted use, but slower than X10
Nexus One also have the latest firmware, rooted etc..benefit but is this really important???
Hero... actually not the same grade
I want to said X1 to X10 you can feel much better improve, actually when you jump from WM to Android you can feel it
Milestone VS X10
Outlook: I guess X10 is better but MS not bad, but MS heavy
Phone Feature: MS win, better speaker, clear and loud, also the IM volume is clear and MS have CrystalVoice, X10 speaker low, and the most important is the IM volume is very low.... MW600 is your friend = ="
Stylus: X10 win, the custom of the X10 and UI, Userfriendly is X10, But MS also can improve by Apps
Performance: slower than X10
Nexus One VS X10
Outlook: I think 99% people said X10 win
Phone Feature: I think is draw, Nexus one have Noise Cancel, but in the real world this feature seem not really good as Milestone, and the volume same as X10 still low
Performance: Faster than X10
Conclusion:
My choice is X10, even I played the Milestone and Nexus one and hero also
X10 is a very union product, you can feel this is the Sony phone, not like the MS or Nexus one, just only a Android
When you use X10, you will see many place has been modified and make the stylus in one "Sony Stylus"
Even the outlook and the UI you can see this is the phone which not like just only buy some band, and then the outlook is like a soap and UI alway HTC = ="
The Better Video Play back and the best camera on Android "like DC"
If you want to play the PHONE, you use MS or Nexus One
If you want to show up, use the PHONE, then X10
HA... when I goto street and show off the X10, many people watch my Phone, wow... what is this phone?? the outlook is very good, big screen and slim
Stylus: Still same as MS, it can root and improve the UI from apps
I too upgraded from X1 to X10, the X10 does feel 10 times better than the X1 (hence the name..?)
The reason why I picked X10 is almost the same reason why I picked X1 last year; the looks and the hardware. X1 was quite a powerhouse when snapdragon wasn't available in the market. However as you and I'd agree, X1 isn't a dream machine as we thought. The lagginess and lack of supports from SE quickly turns me off.
Picking the xperia series phone again wasn't an easy decision for me, it feels like I'm going back into the SE trap again. But I reconsider because of the improvement offered in the X10, 1Ghz, big screen, android, and still has the sexy appeal. I have been watching the phone closely for a year ever since there were leaked information on the internet, and reviews after the phone was finally out and eventually, hold my breath and clicked 'Buy Now' on eBay.
X10 is just like the X1, it isnt as impressive as the spec look like. But the difference is its more impressive than the X1, just not as exciting as you might expect. X10 will still give you the 'lag' experience especially at the animations department. To a some people the laginess is unacceptable due to the fact there is a 1Ghz cpu in the house. To me who came from X1 is acceptable because I've seen the worse.
Also believe me or not android isnt as mature as the windows mobile. There are quite a few basic functions the android lacks like task manager etc, and the dialler feels weird (press power button to reject call...?).
So if you still havent made up your mind yet, this is the factors I think you should consider
-are u a physical keyboard person? (I am, but I do not mind virtual keyboard either, I'm currently typing really slow on the phone, and without physical keyboard, u cant do 'blind typing'. I used to type my messages walking on the street without looking at the screen)
-are u a 100% sucker of graphics and animation? sure timescape looks impressive, but not an essential. And u need good looking profile pics of ur friends frm ur Facebook or twitter account to make timescape looks good. Most of my Facebook splines are showing only my friend's nose and lips due to their profile pics, makes my whole timescape look like a joke.
-can you live with android 1.6 until Q4 2010? X10 is my 1st android phone and I have not had the privilege to played with 2.1. So I'm not spoiled from the comfort of 2.1.
-can you live with single touch screen?
-do you expect the phone to perform as fluid as iPhone? IMO I have not seen other phone which can perform better than the iPhone at the animation department (HTC's Sense is pretty close). I personally do not want an iphones cause I've got an ipod touch, apple's control freak, and too many people has it.
And finally my rating! 9/10
Sorry for the long post but I hope I helped, because I have gone through the same decision making ;D
how the hell do i delete a post?
Deleted. Double post

Obviously depends on what features you really care about regarding your mobile phone, but OVERALL I think HTC's Desire is hands down the best phone on the market right now. I firmly believe the X10 could be, but in all honesty it could be until November until its potential is fully realized--pending promised firmware and OS updates.
So if you want the best phone,
Right now--HTC Desire
This year--Evo 4G, Samsung Galaxy S, maybe X10!
Satisfaction -- 7/10 X10 Overall -- 8.5/10
Some regret yes -- high cost, questionable updates from SE, poor battery life
X10's performance is not up to N1 or Desire, but other features and potential is why I bought it.

Ah thats why some callers are gone when I try to get my phone from back jean pocket
Veeeeeery happy thank you !! From what I was using (P1) 10/10 (what doesnt have a couple of niggles anyway ??)
Very, 9.5/10
Pretty damn satisfied, 8.5/10 (but I'm very difficult to satisfy)
Pros: too many to list, it really is an awesome device.
Cons: while I understand SE's philosophy behind the slow software releases, it doesn't make up for how SLOW they are at releasing them: 6+ months for an update to be customised & tested by them is unacceptable for a top-end device. In all honesty I've found no major issues to WANT the software update, but there are enough to make it a desirable thing to happen.
But, overall, it's a damn nice looking device and it works very well.
I'll give it 8.5 from 10.
Battery life is fine after a week or so when you stop pushing the phone limits
I mean, is a smartphone with 1Gig CPU and 4" display... you can't expect the battery to last 4 days like a dumb phone
If you use the smartphone, 12h battery is super.
If you turn everything off and use the phone (but i don't see the point) you can get 2days or more.
Design + UI, 10/10...
I don't care much about mediascape but timescape does the job.
Call volume ... i have no idea i use MW600 100% and is loud enough.
1.6 vs. 2.1 ?
2.1 will be nice but 1.6 will do it.
I was waiting for Galaxy S until after reading hundred of posts about Samsung "upgrades" i gave up.
Yes, will have a better display and divx/xvid support but Samsung has a bad habit to put new phones on market instead of supporting their old models so, pretty much you are stuck with what you buy.
I came from X1
Don´t buy a X10. Take a HTC instead. I give 2/10. I hate my X10. Poor hardware. Bad integrated hardware buttons ( bad to handle ), sad USB ( on the left????) No MT, bad Battery, POOR earspeaker quality and not loud enough, NO Sence.
What i hate most:
The Dialer
The Phonebook
The Call Log
The "Back" Hardware Button. Bad to reach. Need always to keep atention the X10 is not falling out of my hand. Why 3 or 4 hardware buttons? what did Google think when they did Android???? I hate also the iphone BUT there you have everywhere a "back" tab.
Instead of building TS and MS, SE should make a better usable interface like HTC ( Dialer..../ Sense) and EVERYWHERE a "Back/Cancel" tab.
AND i cant stand with the "select text" method in Android. That is bull****. Why not make it like it is on every computer ( and WM): wipe with your finger and the long press on the selected text and choose between cut, copy.....
i am thinking to change my X10 to a HD2 BUT THIS has no trackball
the perfect phone has a Trackball/ DPAD and maybe(!) two (good to handle) hardware buttons: Dial and Dial end/cancel
but there is no such phone on the market....
of course thats just my opinion ( but there are only 2: my opinion and the wrong opinion )
the last 4 weeks i made a list what i love on my X10 and what i hate: 2 things i love, 43 i hate. The list is a 17(!!!!) pages long word document and every page is FULL. The list took me about 50-70 hours, NO CHOKE!!!! I would post it here but its in german and to translate it would cost me again lots of hours.....
Best phone I have ever owned and I have owned the following phones in the last year:
iphone 3G
HTC Magic
HTC Hero
Nokia N900
People talk about lag but I have seen none. Best battery life of the bunch, too.

iphone 3G - i understand THAT!!!
HTC Magic - ? i think its much better than the X10
HTC Hero - ? i think its much better than the X10
Nokia N900 - i dont know this phone
I'm happy with it I went form the X1 to the X10 and have been a Windows Mobile fan for years. It's taking some getting used to but i'm getting there.
Battery life was a pain until I disabled Timescape and several other services.
well i would say i was very frustrating, waited for so long since the phone advertise, here in DUBAI we don't have marketplace inside the package but you can see the box there is marketplace icon weird!!!!!!!!!!!... the only thing that you can enjoy your android is to get some useful apps in the marketplace.... yet there is a word "debranding"and some of frnds manage to debrand there androids in UK version and they have this apps could MARKETPLACE..... but i want my phone to be a virgin as new with out debranding it!!!
rate 5 out of 10....
i only miss multitouch as i upgraded from hd2 which has very good multitouch ,i now returned to hd2 as my primary phone ,as i also hate android 1.6 i give it (4 out of 10) and hd2 (8 out of 10 )
My previous phone was iphone 3G, but with android phone I´m very satisfied!
Look 9/10
Functions 8/10 (missing camera flash, and divx support and a little MT)
Overall 8,5/10
Cons: low call volume (but I have MW600 and with it its great), for that price X10 can have stereo speakers, speed of releasing future updates (hope that SE will release updates faster... 2.1 in Q4 2010 wtf ??!)

X10 vs iPhone (only serious replies)

Hello XDA,
I'm not really sure if such a thread is allowed, but I'll give it a shot anyway (if it ain't, lock it please).
I was almost ready to get an X10, when a friend told me he is running Android on his iphone.
So I'm like:
X10: 4" screen (NO MULTITOUCH FFS)
Android (1.6 FAIL, and it can almost run normally on an iphone and 2.1 later on ??? why the hell not 2.2 ?!)
1GHz Processor (hell yeah!!, that's a huge plus for the X10) <--- EDIT: THIS IS NOT IRONIC !
8MP camera is win win
iPhone:
3.5" screen (obviously smaller than X10's)
iPhone OS seems really good (plus it can run Android....almost)
CPU is worse than X10's
HUGE amount of apps ('specially when you jb it)
So please give me some replies about my thoughts and feel free to add something.
Thanks in advance!

If multitouch is everything for you. then buy a ****ing iPhone, geeze..
The screen on the x10, is bigger and more bright than the iPhone's. The screen does also have a higher resolution as well, as it being bigger.
Why don't people stop ****ing crying about it having version 1,6? jesus.. Buy an iPhone then! Or a Nexus one!(It will get version 2,2 this week).
You seem kind of ironic when it comes to the cpu, of the x10...
In my opinion, is the x10 better than the current iPhone(s).
The only thing that I do like better when it comes to the iPhone, is the games on the iPhone's application store.
edit: Neither do I like the design on the iPhone that well. They do have almost the same design on all theyre phones. the exeptions are 2g and 4g. 3gs and 3g looks exactly the same. the front of the phone is basically the same on all the iPod touch's and iPhones.
Personally I don't care about multitouch. So for me the only thing better in a iPhone is that it's tougher and feel more solid but only because it don't have a removable back cover and that come with a price. You can't change an iPhone 16 gb xd card for a 32 gb or have many xd card and change them as you like. You can't change the battery and I don't like the way to put the sim card in. I know a lot of peoples with iphone and i'm the only one with a x10. For me x10 is way better than a iPhone.

You ask for serious replies, then you say things like "FFS" and "FAIL!!!!"
Go away, troll.
As you yourself pointed out that X10 has better hardware in every aspect, so then the only remaining thing is the software aspect of the phone. Well when I bought this phone I was pretty sure that we will be able to root it pretty soon, quite unfortunately though, it turns out to be not true. Well I am pretty sure SE is noticing the frustration among us (some of us are even thinking of selling this phone). I hope pretty soon we will have the flashing tool we need for rooting.
After rooting, the remaining comparision lies between Android and iphone UI. Well that's another topic entirely, the way Android apps are growing, I am pretty sure we will catch up to iphone by the end of this year. And UI wise, well..... I haven't seen their OS 4 yet. I am pretty sure it's great, but if not Android 2.2 then 2.3 will beat it , yep I am pretty sure about that.
Dear sekibun,
This is my first post in this forum.
I used Iphone for almost 6 months and I was so happy with it. However, on my past days I used only SonyEricsson mobiles starting from P Series (P900i then P910i then P990i then P1i). When I heard that SE going to release X10i with android OS, I immediately sold my Iphone and I bought X10i. To be honest with you. I am more than happy with X10i. It is definitely better than Iphone in the following aspect:-
• SIZE, LOOK AND DISPLAY. -- WITHOUT ANY DEBATE --
• CAMERA. -- WITHOUT ANY DEBATE --
• Faster GPS and better Bluetooth.
• Timescape/Mediascape UI build-in app which make your phone alive. Plus all my friends they get impressed when I show them.
• Smoother and faster internet browser.
I noticed that a bit X10i is slower than Iphone, However, it does not get slower even than if you run 25 applications in the background plus you are browsing internet and listening to wireless fm.
You don’t have to agree with me. But was my experience when I switch from iPhone 3GS to Xperia X10 .
the only good thing about iphones , that they never dies ,even the first released iphone still gets updates till now
Hardware on paper looks nice. But thw software on thy x10 doesn't take advantage of the phone. I would wait for root or 2.1 update if I were you.

I've used both the 3gs and the x10. The x10's screen is gorgeous compared to the iPhone's as the pixel density and the size is greatly improved. Web browsing wise, the x10 is also about twice as fast at rendering websites. Now usability wise, the x10 belongs in the gutter of smart phones. Selecting small links in the browser is a huge pain and a lot of times when you mean to scroll in the browser the phone will open a link instead. The music player is beyond incoherency and just lacks all sorts of functionality while the iPhone uses the true and tried iPod format. Application wise the Android lags behind and x10 is even worse as a lot of apps do not support the 1.6 system. Without root, the x10 is even less customizable compared to a jailbroken iPhone. In conclusion, the x10 have a supierior hardware but it does not have the software needed to even make the everyday usage not frustrating -_- the iPhone is not as powerful, but it just works.
almaqdad, lifeflayer (and the others) ty for your answers.
first of all, i'm not ironic towards the x10's hardware.
don't know what to write lol.
i think i'm leaning towards the x10, but still not 100% sure.

No, it doesn't. The first iPhone will not be getting the 4.0 update. The iPhone 3G will not be receiving multitasking, or a few of the other new features of the update.
Same for the iPod touch.
Only the new models will get the full updates.
The Problem of the iPhone is the lack of Multitasking! I have both here an Iphone and an X10. The iPhone doesnt make me happy.
Simple expample. I'm on icq and receive an sms. To read the sms i must close icq (it doesn't stay in the background) and so i loose the icq messages sent in the meanwhile.
This is the problem with everything. it's solved through push notifications, but that has nothing to do with multitasking and won't work in icq for example, because if you simply closes the program icq server thinks you're still online and all messages send in this time are sent to /dev/null ^^
Second problem is that apple always wants you to use iTunes. You can't simply copy songs etc. off the phone (only the one that you buyed in iTunes). You're also not allowed to send songs through Blutooth to friends etc.
The iPhone OS seems to be pretty smart and like apple users say "snappy", BUT use it for a while and you see all the limitations of this OS (even with Jailbreak). If you are okay with this the iPhone is a good choice. If not choose an Android phone.
The only point which is a PRO an iPhone is multitouch, but I never needed it till now.
For me the X10 is much better than the iPhone.
So choose on of your friend and play with his iPhone for a couple of hours and you will see if its good for you or not.

Here is my 2 cents.
iPhone is limited by its hardware.
X10 is limited by its software.
In the long run, X10 will only go as far as the developers at SE make it go. So potentially, it could be one of the best Android phones on the market.
This is where it won't even compete with the iPhone.
iPhone is already proven to be a success. It's OS is super good and smooth. X10's OS is laggy and basically cripples the phone with its limitations.
Technology should be here and now. You want to have everything now, not later. And the problem is that the wait doesn't give what the end-users what they want - the current best thing.
So is the iPhone better than X10? Right now it is. And when iPhone 4g comes out, X10 would be eating the dust from Apple and other Android phones.

Thank you for your answers once again !
One question though; isn't the new update coming to the iphone providing multitasking ('cause this really is a big problem). If I finally pick the iphone, I'm getting the 3gs, so I'll be able to get the latest version of the OS right ?
Also, what arcticreaver said; I want (we all do) my features here and now !
From what I read on the forums, we are not even sure if the X10 will ever be root-able.
Ahh and by the way, do we know when iphone 4g or w/e it's called is coming out ?
~sekibun
Think about that and google for "Fast App Switch" on Iphone OS4.0
There is NO MULTITASKING in Os 4.0.
It's similar to Android but not so good. The OS 3.0 frezzes the Apps and send them so background (similar to Android) if you wanna use them they are waken up. BUT you can't let active apps in background, this will not be possible even with OS4.0, Apple only allows 2 more apps for real multitasking. There are still the same problems with OS4.0 than before. Only the apps start faster because they are frozen in background.
ICQ e.g. still won't work in background.
-Bin4ry
What's with all the bashing of the x10s software? It has some little lags sometimes but every smartphone has these kinds of lags. My jb iPhone was kinda slow and the browser crashed when surfing complex websites due RAM limitations. The iPhone is good for using as a mobile music and videoplayer. An Android device is good for nearly everything.
The x10 is not that bad with the 1.6 Android os. Multitouch is overrated. The browser experience is great. It's no problem for me to click the smart links on forums like xda. It was a pain in the ass with iPhone and hd2.
If you get an iPhone 3gs now you also could use the x10. The x10 maybe has some little limitations with Android 1.6 but the 3gs lacks hardware...

Now and Future
I have both of devices compared (Iphone and X10).
The size of both are the same, visible screen is juste larger than Iphone.
Speed :
User Interface speed : Iphone is faster and smoother
Web Speed : Android Web Browser is faster, but less reliable than Iphone,
but i think it will be better with Android 2.2
Applications : look the same, but X10 is more beatyfull
Application Store :
the Iphone AppStore is beter, more beautyfull and more reliable.
Install and Uninstall is more userfriendly on Iphone (i don't know how to uninstall on Android)
X10 Specific :
Camera (Photos) : One word ... Beatyfulll !!!! It quality is nearly my APN
Sony N1 (8.1 Mp too)...
->Iphone's Camera is very poor !!!
Videos : Beautyfull too !!! Actualy with 800x480/30is... Nearly a Midle
quality Numeric Camescope... And Sony Promess a 720p
Reacording with the next update Android 2.1...
->CyCirder is good, X10 is so far better..
Sound : Beauty full too... Realy Better than Iphone... but actualy not so
userfriendly like iPhone... Headset is very good quality
->Iphone's sound is good, but X10 is so far better...
I'm realy wait someone find a solution to be root on this device !!! Or hope to have the lastest Update (2.2)...
I don’t understand why people making so much big deal with a small limitation that Xperia X10 have with android OS 1.6 which incomparable with big problem that Iphone does with multi-tasking.

Only the apps start faster because they are frozen in background.
ICQ e.g. still won't work in background.

Some applications are allowed to run in the background, like skype, or the messenger applications.
Other applications like games and such are not allowed, and are instead frozen as you said.
Atleast, this is how I understood the whole thing.

Some questions I could not find answers to

Hi everyone
Have recently moved to the x10i, previously owned the desire. Have been looking around the forums as well as google for some answers but could not find them. Would appreciate if you could help:
1. Reject call with sms - any app for this (or maybe I missed it in the settings)?
2. Turn to mute functionality - do I need an app for this in x10? if yes, recommend one pls
3. Contact groups - group sms, email needed for the google contact groups I have
Thats it for now. Thanks!
Guys, with so many android users, and so many of you xperia users, surely someone would know ?? Would greatly appreciate any help...would not have asked for it if I had found anything by searching..
for the second one why not just use the silent mode?
settings - sounds then turn on silent mode.
Or just use one of the many shortcut widgets in the market place to toggle it between silent, vibrate and full sound.
THere is a quick settings widget built into the phone that does this too.

Don't know. I have voicemail and that seems to be sufficient for me.

If you're not already using Handcent SMS then go install it immediately, it's by far one of the best apps on the market. It will allow you to send group sms.
gmail allows you to make contact groups which I would think allow you to send group emails. The stock Dialer app on the X10 doesn't have contact groups, but I believe there are better paid for apps on the market for that kind of functionality, do some more searching because I know it's been discussed someone on XDA I just can't remember where.
Question for you: How do you like the X10 compared to the Desire? I'm debating about making the switch :S
FYI try posting questions like these in the apps section, you'll probably get a better/quicker response.
Hey, thanks for the responses
To answer your queries rvictorg:
1. Voicemail is not an option for me here, so reject with sms is what I am looking for
2. yep, (indesisiv, thanks for the tip but I need to have the option of getting the phone to ring and just mute it without looking if I am talking in a meeting if a call comes in)
3. Handcent sms is great but I find a few issues with it - after getting a number of sms in the phone, it slows down..not to mention it takes up quite a bit of memory. I have used it for quite a while, am not sure whether I want to revert back to it
To answer your question about desire versus x10i, lemme tell you first that I have had the luxury and misfortune to have used almost all the class A handsets from all the major manufacturers and OS platforms. I will be posting a full review very soon on the forum, but lemme give you a heads up that might be shocking to quite a few - I prefer the x10 by a big margin...why? a few spoilers:
1. Battery life on both the phones is almost the same with the latest firmwares - so all the talk of desire being better are crap in real world use. In fact, on my use (moderate) I found the x10 to be way better
2. I am sick and tired of the measly evolutionary changes in HTC sense since the Hero. And anyway, you can always root and get whatever UI or home replacement you want. I am sticking with x10 timescape since I find it not too bad and gels in nicely with the phone experience and is NOT slow, just relatively slower compared to sense which you probably wont notice in every day use.
3. The screen on the x10 is wayyy better than desire, and auto brightness setting on the x10 are far more intelligent. not to mention bigger size.
4. The physical design of the x10 takes my breath away - nuff said.
5. Some people complain about the speaker volume being low on the x10 - relatively, yes it is; actually, there are worse phones on the market. and it works well enough for you to use it, unless you have lost some ('quite a bit') of your hearing. And, you can chose some tones (if you must) that are louder than the others...so its almost a non-issue.
Practically, there is little to no difference between the phones when it comes to real world use, no matter how heavy a user you may be. The UIs can be customized, and the lower memory (RAM) and no multitouch in hardware seem to be the only 2 gripes, which are not dealbreakers (think about it, how many times apart from zoom have u ACTUALLY used multitouch!? as for the RAM, there is a thread on this forum that proves android is just as fast whether the ram is 256 or 512 MB..). BUT, the choice comes down to - screen quality and size, phone design, battery life. The x10 takes the cake by a big big margin in my opinion here. And do not forget the touch screen calibration issues HTC phones have been facing since the switch to AMOLED - its a serious issue, one that has cost me a lot of hassle on both the Hero (even it was not amoled) and the nexus one.
Hope this helps. This is one effin' darn good device, dont let whiners tell you otherwise.
I think that pressing the volume buttons on the side mutes the ring.. (seems to remember accidentally doing that a couple of times taking it out of it's case..)!..
Haven't come across anything which sends a text on a rejected call....
Haven't had any problems at all with handscent.. I've got tonnes of texts and mine runs fine..(??)..
Have to agree that since the last couple of updates the phone runs really well and the battery life is good for 3 days on light usage.. bloody brilliant!
Man you just made my day better by that quick review.
sent from my x10i that is banging for a 2.1 upgrade. ...
cool, thanks for that quick review too, definitely helps me out! It's very interesting to hear your opinion especially coming from a great device like the Desire and your experience with others. Any thoughts on Samsung Galaxy?? lol
I only have a few gripes with the X10, and almost all of them are software related. I'm just keeping faith that the devs can crack the bootloader so we can start flashing custom roms and possibly get Froyo running on this beauty. I'm getting a little more antsy with all these new devices launching and now their respective Froyo updates this past week, makes me really question SE's commitment to their devices and customers.
Timescape looks cool and...well that's about it. It has loads of potential imho, but it's missing way too much functionality to make it even remotely practical. I honestly have not used it once in the past 2 months which is really sad because it was a major selling feature of this phone.
Mediascape is actually pretty awesome...other than the fact it doesn't have a widget...or an equalizer...or the ability to create playlists...but other than that I think it's fantastic and honestly the best media experience I've seen on Android to date.
I really hope Sony Ericsson does more than basically change the digits 1.6 to 2.1 I'd love to see 2.2! more SE widgets for EVERYTHING (I think I have a widget fetish) 720p video, photos with flash, an increase in call volume (I can hear it, but it really does need improvement) then I'd be totally satisfied.
I just hate knowing that this gorgeous piece of hardware isn't reaching it's full potential, I really want to love the X10 but I don't yet...that really, is where my resentment comes from.
And good luck with your 3 questions, for 1) I just noticed an app in the Market called SMART SMS by Smart Apps LLC, it's $0.99 and appears to be able to reject calls and send a customized sms to the caller, hope that helps
give chomp sms a try...see if it works for you..
ring to mute..as someone said above, the volume keys should work fine..

Recently bought 2 Galaxy S and a Desire, maybe Im gonna try do a video test soon. From my point of view, first touch to the Galaxy S doesnt feel good. Why? Because the Galaxy S feels cheapy in the hands, its way too light and absolutely doesnt feel solid. Imo its even not as good as the Desire one... The back cover is really thin, when u push it in the middle, it bends. The overall design looks more like a toy and a cheaper version of iPhone 2G, especially when the screen is off. One thing really let me down is the phone bezel around the screen, its higher than the screen itself, a really strange thing for a full capacitive touchscreen, even when I put a screen protector on, the screen is still lower than the bezel.
About the Super AMOLED screen that everyone is curious about, when u turn the brightness all the way up on galaxy and x10, the x10 seems to be much brighter in web browser... a really weird thing, the colors on Galaxy S tends to be hotter, its more yellowish and reddish, but defenitely the screen on X10 is brighter and more eyecatching, eventhough the default homescreen of Galaxy S loos very attracted, from here I really love the X10 screen. Last thing, if u put too many widgets on the homescreen, the Galaxy S will suffer some lags in animation, a real down point. Testing page loading in some heavy pages such as Goal.com, PremierLeague.com or GameSpot.com in default web browser, the Desire usually comes first with around 2-3s ahead of Galaxy S and the X10 is the last with just 1s behind Galaxy S (X10 running OS1.6)
The only thing I can see Galaxy S is better is the GPU, its a lot better than Desire and a bit better than X10 in some 3 D heavy graphic games in term of FPS and also help webpage scrolling a bit smoother than Desire and X10 (note that the X10 is running OS 1.6). Thats all I can say for now
PS: As umaronly said about the light sensor for auto brightness, I agree with him the sensor on X10 works a lot better than the other 2, in some low light conditions, X10 turn the screen down very low and seems to be more sensitive in changing environment than the other 2, same condition but the other 2 seems to be brighter, which affects battery life a lot

Thanks for the app suggestion people, will surely try them out soon.
Am pleased to see you liked the feedback from my mini-review, am hoping for a good response from the detailed one. As for comparison with Galaxy S (which I have also tried), it is definitely not as solid and fluid as the other 2 sets. Leads me to blame the Samsung UI touchwiz (if you turn it off i.e. use a replacement home UI it works much better).
BUT, looking at the overall experience of the phones and physical design, I am still inclined towards x10...it is way more attractive in its entire package compared to the other two, unless you are only or mostly into 3D gaming. Also, 2 words on AMOLED and Super AMOLED screens - stay...away!! If you read up on the technology behind amoled and TFT LCD you will notice the inherent advantages of using LCD tech..pundits will try and convince you about the marginally better (12% or so on average) power consumption on AMOLED, but in real world use, if software is well tuned and auto-brightness works well, you can NOT tell the difference, other than the gorgeous display itself on LCD. In fact, in my tests the xperia x10 outlasts the other handsets on battery life even with the bigger screen (and of course bigger battery, but that is something you ought to expect from all smartphones!!)
Also, lemme tell you a bit of good news (don't ask me the source please). x10 will have an update to 2.2 later in the year as well, and apparently the thing flies on the 2.2 ROM even on the very early build, where SE engineers are tweaking the social integration much tighter into the OS (think: fb pics sync with contacts ), plus the added benefit of installing apps on memory card allows RAM to be free for phone UI. It flies, and kicks the @$$ off of other smartphones...stay tuned!

Just got a little aroused there

Is everyone happy with the atrix

I came from the samsung captivate with high hopes and well I have noticed a few things the i would rather have over the atrix
one would be the screen, items like the opening screen to the xda app comes out pixaled
the overal make of the phone is I would say is cheap compared to the captivate. It feels as it would break on the first drop not to mention the plastic back cover feel as if it would break after a few openings. Overall I am content with it but not as happy as expected

Agree here. Regret to have my inspire sold.
I'm pretty happy with it, coming from an iPhone 4 (and an Evo.)
Pros:
- Screen looks great, pretty close to my i4. Yeah, if I touch my nose to the glass, I can see pixels. I'm also fine with the screen not being AMOLED over-saturated. My regular laptop isn't, my PC isn't, my Atrix lapdock isn't, my i4 isn't, my Evo isn't, my HDTV's aren't, so it doesn't really bother me that the phone looks exactly the same as everything else I own.
- It is quite fast. As an example, I tend to install or update multiple apps at once, and on my Evo (which was overclocked), it would drag the phone to being nearly unresponsive having more than 1 thing going at once.
- I'm digging the accessories so far. The DLNA feature has been great for grabbing stuff from my media server and displaying it in 720p on my TV. It's not 1080 yet, but it still looks quite good. The browser works well on the TV as well. The lapdock has been quite nifty so far as well. Barring Windows games, I've had no problem doing everything else I use my standalone laptop for.
- Battery has been amazing, compared to either my Evo or i4.
- Fingerprint scanner works extremely well, I was surprised by this, pleasantly.
- The on-screen keyboard is fantastic, right up there with the i4. Far better than any other Android I've owned to date (which is quite a few.)
Cons:
- When flipping through the screens on the phone, it hasn't been all that smooth, even after a fresh boot. It's not bad, but its like my Evo, circa launch day, prior to mods to improve its responsiveness. Might be Motoblur related?
- Data uplink is killing my latency, which if it isn't something that is fixed relatively soon, could actually be a deal breaker for me, since I do like to tether to play stuff like Bad Company 2 while at work... 130ms latency on my Evo is okay, 400 on the Atrix... isn't.
- This might sound odd, but it's so smooth that it is slippery as hell. I've had a few miraculous catches following the phone just sliding right out of my hand.
- When grabbing media for my server, I have to copy it via DLNA to the device first, THEN play it, when using the Webtop OS in either the entertainment or lapdocks. I have a feeling this will come down to someone making a crafty software fix, but who knows.
- The lapdock needs a way to hide the icon bar at the bottom to expand the browser window. If you try a Facebook game, you can't quite fit the whole game window into view, and there are other things that have a similar issue.
Overall I'm pretty happy with it, and it seems like most of the issues I have can be solved in software, one way or another.
No stock UI works that well other than Sense. I suggest getting ADW launcher and theme it like your stock UI. Its very smooth side to side etc.
One thing I noticed - this phone is flat out HORRIBLE with UI animations such as the gingerbread launcher. My captivates UI speed blows this out of the water.
They need to fix that asap.
Pretty happy so far.
Im pretty happy with it so far. I came from the LG Expo which was a WM 6.5 device. This is my first Android phone, so it was a pretty big upgrade.
If there is one thing I am slightly disappointed in is the phone's ram. The "1gb" of ram appears to be split in half between the phone and the web top environment, so either one can only access 512mb at any one time. I'm only slightly disappointed because I expected it. It's another case of misleading, but not totally false advertising...now, about my missing "G" in network speed....
Also from iPhone 4. Still haven't decided if I am going to keep it yet, overall the phone is really nice, but it still just doesn't feel as smooth/fluid/solid as the iPhone. I was really hoping a nice Tegra 2 chip would make things smooth on Android but alas I was still disappointed. The phone is fast don't get me wrong, but the UI still has plenty of places that are just ... chunky. Overall build quality of the phone is also nice, but it still doesn't feel nearly as solid in my hand as the iPhone does.
I like the phone just not sure I like it tons better than my captivate. I think a lot of people that downplay samoled screens have never owned one. Its very tough going back. Overall my phone flys using launcher pro plus with 3d animations. No slow Downs or chunkiness whatsoever.
I'm definitely happy. I @so came from the Captivate and there isn't anything I would change.
I LOVE the fact that the pixel Dr/ity is larger, therefore making everything smaller. today is going to be the first day I see how it performs out in the realworld so I hope that goes well
I'm thinking about picking up the laptock dock since you can tether for free as well... might wait a while though since I don't need it now.
Rooted/ROM Captivate
Rooted Atrix
I'm unimpressed. Of course it's fast but not noticeably faster than the inspire. I really want to keep this phone and use it as my main device but it's not looking good right now. The touch screen isn't as responsive as the captivate or the inspire. When I try to fly through things, I find the phone missing registered touches. At first, I just thought I need to get used to this device but I could do this on the inspire and captivate with no problem at all. I'm going to give this more time so we'll see how it goes. Another thing I noticed, Motorola has a load of crap that runs on the device that I'll never use (see running services) and it takes up a significant amount of memory. It'd be a pain to go through and manually end these services. Even after using a task killer, most of the services persisted.

Coming from the Nexus One, which is still regarded as the baseline for a good Android device, I'd have to say I'm pretty happy with it, no regrets at all in selling my N1 to get this. Yes, I do sorely miss the stock UI and being in that comfort zone that I'll be first to get updates (even though Google has been slacking lately). With that said, the pros out number the cons.
Pros
- BLOODY fast
- Battery is 1000x better than the Nexus One. I can go a whole day on one charge and it's not an iPhone? Say it ain't so
- Screen is 1000x better than the Nexus One, and very, very close to my wife's iPhone 4
I don't know what the guy above is smoking, but the Atrix is a 1000X better than the Captivate in terms of build quality. I was sorta anxious about it being all plastic, but the phone feels rock solid. With an Otter Box Commuter on the way, I doubt I'll ever notice it was any different than my ex-N1 (with a Commuter case as well).
Neutral
- The phone isn't the prettiest, but certainly nice.
Cons
- Motoblur adds some nice touches, but overall it's slow. I'm using LauncherPro Plus which is getting me back some of my sanity.
- Doesn't come with Gingerbread out of the box :-(
- Power button location sucks
- Volume buttons are on wrong side :-(
- I know people hate trackball, but until Gingerbread makes it out to the Atrix, copy-n-paste SUCKS
I prefer this phone over my captivate 10 fold. The screen is not a big issue to me as a lot of times on the captivate screen peoples faces always had a tint of red to them. Over saturation is over saturation no matter how you look at it. The phone is also super fast in UI transitions for me and is worlds better then the captivate in that respect. Motoblur home UI used to cause all sorts of slow down but switching to launcher pro fixed all of those issues. The phone is really quick and snappy. The XDA load screen is pixelated i would assume because it is a lower res image in the first place. Also why is that even important? it's just a load screen?
Some people are just trying too hard to find any excuse to hate the phone.

Coming from a Nexus One (which btw was a great phone in its own right), and having had a plethora of phones including an iPhone 4 and a Captivate, I am very happy with the Atrix.
There are a lot of people making a big deal of AMOLED vs LCD. What I'd like to add is that it really is COMPLETELY A MATTER OF PERSONAL PREFERENCE! I, for one, prefer the more natural tones and higher brightness of an LCD display, but do see the draw of the higher contrast AMOLED. There are valid arguments for the pros and cons of both types of displays, and it really is best to see the two side by side in various environments to determine what works best for you.
Moving right along to the data speed: I've read a lot of posts about the data being capped and slower than 3g phones, but this has not been my experience! I used the new SIM they sent me and made sure I was on the 4G plan, and now my downloads are consistently faster than they are on the N1 and even faster than the iPhone (funny how that the iPhone still sets the benchmark).
Lastly, I want to address the performance of the phone: I think it's phenomenal! I did root and replace the stock launcher right away, but besides that everything is stock. The phone is super responsive. The transitions are seamless. Everything works great with one exception - the lock screen which takes a second to come up.
To wrap up, I think the Atrix is a very nice upgrade to my N1 and that Motorola hit a home run with this phone. Granted, we won't realize it's full potential for a few months, but I believe that the Atrix is a great platform and will have superb development support from the community!

exactly, my phone pulls the same DL speeds I could get from my captivate in my area. The only thing I'm lacking is the upload speed.

I'm extremely happy with mine. Coming from a ton of phones recently, including iP4, Captivate, Inspire, Surround among others. It may be the perfect size of phone/screen combo for me. Atrix is super fast and I'm good with the screen.
Everyone sees it's a pentile display and all of sudden it's garbage. I don't notice pixels. Sure, maybe if I got really close and squint my eyes I might. I'll never know because I don't spend all day trying to figure out how my phone sucks. Web page loads are faster than the Inspire for me.
Battery looks to be insanely good compared to the Inspire. I'd been using mine heavily since 10am yesterday googing around with it and playing games. I didn't plug it in when I went to bed and it still said 40% when I woke up. I realize that it goes in increments of 10, but that's pretty solid.
Sound quality is excellent! Talking on the phone shows really great audio quality for me. The biggest surprise was how loud/clear the speaker is for music and nav. I couldn't be happier with the phone.

Just curious why you bought it if your service is so bad? We all knew the bootloader was going to be locked down because it's Moto.
I found the Inspire to be light years ahead of the Captivate, and the Atrix to be just a notch above the Inspire. Also, I like the Atrix's skinned version of Swype. I honestly didn't even know it came with Swype until last night. I was using stock the whole time. lol
As for the iPhone 4, I can see why some aren't as impressed. When it comes down to it, no phone on the market can match its polish. Some come close, but none match. For me, I just prefer Android over iOS.

Changing from iphone4

Hey all
Looking to change from iphone4. Had every iPhone since launch and am just bored of em now
Looking at android phone and the sgs2 caught my eye
However have seen a lot of negativity about it in here and elsewhere
So do you think it's a good move or should I hang on for the HTC sensation (which sounds brilliant)
iPhone user here.
Apps are far better on iOS. You wont find some apps on Android that are on iOS. Thats my only dislike about Android but thats down to the developer. Im missing loads of apps, first direct, sky sports, bbc and so on. You can use the brower for all these wit Flash though
The SGS2 is by far the best Android phone. If your truely bored of iOS then get this, its worth it.

Loads on negativity about IPhone all over the net .
Point is that this forum is new and not yet representative of a large number of users .
Personally i thought the SGS 1 was as good as the IPhone 4 though some users preferred the HTc interface but i did not .
You really got to try them and read the reviews on al the phones .

Hello
I got bored too
I have just done the swap to a SGS2 from a iphone 4(well still have it)
Before the ip4 I was a long time winmo user
there are good and bad points to both phones
ios is slick on ip4 and does its job well...but also so limiting even with jailbreak
I f you love tweaking then get a droid phone thats why I have now bought 1
as for the negatives how many did the ip4 have @ the start
Tbh I think the ui on sgs is poor
Much prefer HTC sense (have messed about with mates)

Got the HTC desire for a while, and now I've got a SGS2, and I really prefer TouchWiz 4.0 over HTC sense. TouchWiz is really good on this phone. HTC Sense, never really liked it.
I've just received my Galaxy S2 today, a bit of an act of faith after the first one, which was IMO at first a very flawed device (a little digging and you can find my previous postings about this).
I've just come from an iPhone 4 myself, via an HTC Incredible S, so I think I can comment on here. To me, the Samsung clearly takes design cues from the iphone, in the design of the icons, the central home button and even the design and some of the features (like the screen shot - home + power)... to me, the SGS2 is like a bastard child of the best android phone and the iphone mixed into one....
IMO this is a good thing. I was bored silly with the iphone, and was sick of how restricted it was, even when Jailbreaked. The iphone 4 is a very nice phone for sure, but really boring to use in the long term (although some like it, and I can see why).
With the SGS2 you get a similar UI, but you also get androids superior functions as well (widgets, live wallpaper, notifications, google integration etc).
As for the SGS2 versus Sense, well TBH I was going to wait for the Sensation, and in the meantime, I made a profit from selling my ip4 and swapping for an Incredible S, and I did so so that I could get a taste of Sense UI. Now, I will say that Sense UI is quite nice, but if I'm being totally honest here, the only things I feel I will miss all that much are the weather and clock widget on Sense and the facebook integration. I do quite like the design of the interface on Sense... and obviously the Sensation is going to have a lot more eye candy again...
Having said all that, there are some things I am not so keen on with Sense. For example, it can at times feel a little "clunky" in places, I am not a fan of the keyboard (I know this can be changed) what with the arrow buttons underneath (not needed IMO), and I just got a feeling that it was slowing the phone down slightly.
Now, when I got the SGS2 I did feel as though I'd probably just dump TWLauncher straight away, but you know what, I think Samsung have really done quite a good job with TW4 to the point where I'm honestly not sure that I can say I prefer Sense any longer. It feels lighter and less bloated, it has some nice touches (task manager, power toggles in the notification, resizing widgets, deleting screens (which you STILL can't do in Sense), folders in the App drawer and so on). Now I'm still not a huge fan of some of the included widgets (but the new calendar widget is superb IMO), and I don't think I'll use the hubs much.
I'm not actually sure whether the Sensation will be able to compete in pure speed and performance terms with the SGS2 which frankly seems to go like a rocket. In fact, the SGS2 seems to fix much of what was wrong with the first phone. I really like it.... BUT... I haven't tested the GPS, yet!
As for the iphone 4 versus the SGS2, once you get over the fact the apps quality isn't quite up there (especially games), you won't look back. Although the iphone 4 feels and looks a more premium product, the Samsung is actually a nicer thing to handle, feels more comfortable in the hand... but other than that, seriously, there seems to be no competition here really, the SGS2 is MUCH better than the iphone 4 really... better camera, MUCH faster, far bigger screen (trust me the iphone 4 looks REALLY tiny compared) and far less restricted.
If this phone lives up to its early promise then I can tell you now that this is one fine phone, and Samsung may have finally delivered the kind of phone everyone knew they could if they put their mind to it... but time will tell

It's really a matter of taste, if you want a perfect Sense experience, then buying this phone wouldn't be a good choice I think
I've never really have experience on Sense (people around me use either iPhone 4 or BB!), but this Touchwiz isn't that bad except for one, no alphabetical sort in grid view on the apps drawer
I've been an iPhone user for 3 years and gone from the 3g to 3gs to the iPhone 4. I have also been an Android user for 1 year, I started with the Desire and upgraded to the SGS1. Despite liking Android a lot, I couldn't really make the switch to being a full time Android user. Mainly becasue I have bought a bunch of really specialized (medical) expensive apps on the iPhone. I dont't mind the iPhone having certain limitations as I have learnt to work around them. Also by also having an Android phone with me, they don't matter.
Like you I have grown tired of the iOS UI, especially the infamous Pop Up Notifications. As a geek I really like Android, trying out custom ROMs, not having any limitations in terms of what apps to install and being able to open web sites with flash are all part of the joy...
Currently I have sold my SGS1 and am waiting for the SGS2 to become available in Slovenia. I dont't think it will full replace my iPhone 4, but it seems it will at least keep me from buying an iPhone 5. A feat Desire couldn't manage to do!
As for the HTC vs Samsung debate. Sense is widely considered the premium Android experience, which I think it also is. But HTC is still using sub par components in its phones: the awful tiny speaker, the bad camera sensor and the worst mics for audio recording. It is for these reasons I won't be buying the Sensation but the SGS2.
Me i prefer Touchwiz and dont like sense .

I'd probably pick Touchwiz over Sense too, also the first SGS imo was as good as the iPhone 4. SGSII is just so gooood....

It would have been if it hadn't been filled with bugs.

Gotta disagree with you there mate
Mate has a galaxy s and it's not a patch on iphone4 I'm afraid
I'm not a fan of TW or Sense, I find them both to be very simple almost condesending, like they were built for kids or blind people to use. You cannot change the screen density with them so you have to stick with 240 which I personally dont find appealing.
I much prefer a stock android framework with ADW Ex.
I am really looking forward to some custom ROM's comming out for the SGS2.
I was a WinMo user right from 1.0 to 6.5 and loved every minute of it. After my HD2 I took a jump and tried out Android, and now I'm hooked! WP7 does look very nice, but it needs to be more open before I switch to it.
I have never owned an iphone. I had a gen1 ipod touch and couldn't stand Itunes so this put me off apple for good, plus I don't like their business model.

It's just personal opinion, my mate has a SGS and I have to say without the bugs it had I would easily choose it over the iP4 in terms of software that is, can't stand the way the SGS looks.

First post here so go easy guys -.-
Though coming from webOS 2 on the Pre 2, then to iPhone 4 with iOS 4, and now to SGSII I'd like to think I've experience the best of Mobile UI's.
And Like you, I was bored on iPhone4, the grid of Icons just didnt cut it out for me and seemed something more akin to fisher price, Loved webOS, though the sub-part hardware and lack of Apps killed it for me.
For me the SGSII is the best of both worlds, the screen is absolutely fantastic and has to be seen to believe, the Applications arent quite iPhone but nonetheless are excellent and I have found a suitable replacement for 95% of the ones I use.
I'm also picky when It comes to butter smooth UI's, and Samsung with the implementation of Touchwiz 4 has nailed It, I'm not sure about other Android phones (This being my first) but Samsung has definately implemented GPU Acceleration into the UI, and It's butter smooth, everywhere, browsing and all, It's what really sold this device to me.
I actually hate Sense, It just looks fugly in my opinion, but to each their own, I applaud Samsung, they've done a good job on Touchwiz, I wanted iPhone style Grid Icons and not the standard App Drawer so It was perfect for me, You'll feel right at home as well with the addition of folders, pages etc
My only real Gripes are the fact It's a tad on the big side, though I have small hands and that It's a dust magnet, either that or I'm OCD which I probably am (I wipe the **** out of my screens, make sure they're speckle free ^^)
SAMOLED Plus, 1.2 GHz Blazing fast Exynos CPU, Quad Core Mali GPU, 1080p Recording, 8MP Back 2MP Front, Gingerbread with Butter Smooth Awesome UI & Customization and It's not hard to see why It's possibly the best phone yet.

Anytime, and trust me you owe It to yourself
There's quite a few Customizations I've made to the Lock and Home Screen If you don't prefer the actual stock widgets so bear that in Mind, It looks pretty awesome now, mate which still has an iPhone was pretty impressed considering.
Not forgetting there's also the HSPA+ radio, In some areas (And depending on network) expect 4MB+ easily, It's also the thinnest smartphone in Class though using a case makes It to normal thin Slab size, I can't really fault It, the only niggle Is battery Life but then again I've been using it 24/7 and I'm yet to properly cycle the battery though early reports suggest you'll easily get a day's worth.
One of the very big plus points for some users but not all users is the ability to customize Android .You do not have to stick with the defaults themes roms kernels etc etc as you like .
