Hello XDA,
I'm not really sure if such a thread is allowed, but I'll give it a shot anyway (if it ain't, lock it please).
I was almost ready to get an X10, when a friend told me he is running Android on his iphone.
So I'm like:
X10: 4" screen (NO MULTITOUCH FFS)
Android (1.6 FAIL, and it can almost run normally on an iphone and 2.1 later on ??? why the hell not 2.2 ?!)
1GHz Processor (hell yeah!!, that's a huge plus for the X10) <--- EDIT: THIS IS NOT IRONIC !
8MP camera is win win
iPhone:
3.5" screen (obviously smaller than X10's)
iPhone OS seems really good (plus it can run Android....almost)
CPU is worse than X10's
HUGE amount of apps ('specially when you jb it)
So please give me some replies about my thoughts and feel free to add something.
Thanks in advance!

If multitouch is everything for you. then buy a ****ing iPhone, geeze..
The screen on the x10, is bigger and more bright than the iPhone's. The screen does also have a higher resolution as well, as it being bigger.
Why don't people stop ****ing crying about it having version 1,6? jesus.. Buy an iPhone then! Or a Nexus one!(It will get version 2,2 this week).
You seem kind of ironic when it comes to the cpu, of the x10...
In my opinion, is the x10 better than the current iPhone(s).
The only thing that I do like better when it comes to the iPhone, is the games on the iPhone's application store.
edit: Neither do I like the design on the iPhone that well. They do have almost the same design on all theyre phones. the exeptions are 2g and 4g. 3gs and 3g looks exactly the same. the front of the phone is basically the same on all the iPod touch's and iPhones.
Personally I don't care about multitouch. So for me the only thing better in a iPhone is that it's tougher and feel more solid but only because it don't have a removable back cover and that come with a price. You can't change an iPhone 16 gb xd card for a 32 gb or have many xd card and change them as you like. You can't change the battery and I don't like the way to put the sim card in. I know a lot of peoples with iphone and i'm the only one with a x10. For me x10 is way better than a iPhone.

You ask for serious replies, then you say things like "FFS" and "FAIL!!!!"
Go away, troll.
As you yourself pointed out that X10 has better hardware in every aspect, so then the only remaining thing is the software aspect of the phone. Well when I bought this phone I was pretty sure that we will be able to root it pretty soon, quite unfortunately though, it turns out to be not true. Well I am pretty sure SE is noticing the frustration among us (some of us are even thinking of selling this phone). I hope pretty soon we will have the flashing tool we need for rooting.
After rooting, the remaining comparision lies between Android and iphone UI. Well that's another topic entirely, the way Android apps are growing, I am pretty sure we will catch up to iphone by the end of this year. And UI wise, well..... I haven't seen their OS 4 yet. I am pretty sure it's great, but if not Android 2.2 then 2.3 will beat it , yep I am pretty sure about that.
Dear sekibun,
This is my first post in this forum.
I used Iphone for almost 6 months and I was so happy with it. However, on my past days I used only SonyEricsson mobiles starting from P Series (P900i then P910i then P990i then P1i). When I heard that SE going to release X10i with android OS, I immediately sold my Iphone and I bought X10i. To be honest with you. I am more than happy with X10i. It is definitely better than Iphone in the following aspect:-
• SIZE, LOOK AND DISPLAY. -- WITHOUT ANY DEBATE --
• CAMERA. -- WITHOUT ANY DEBATE --
• Faster GPS and better Bluetooth.
• Timescape/Mediascape UI build-in app which make your phone alive. Plus all my friends they get impressed when I show them.
• Smoother and faster internet browser.
I noticed that a bit X10i is slower than Iphone, However, it does not get slower even than if you run 25 applications in the background plus you are browsing internet and listening to wireless fm.
You don’t have to agree with me. But was my experience when I switch from iPhone 3GS to Xperia X10 .
the only good thing about iphones , that they never dies ,even the first released iphone still gets updates till now
Hardware on paper looks nice. But thw software on thy x10 doesn't take advantage of the phone. I would wait for root or 2.1 update if I were you.

I've used both the 3gs and the x10. The x10's screen is gorgeous compared to the iPhone's as the pixel density and the size is greatly improved. Web browsing wise, the x10 is also about twice as fast at rendering websites. Now usability wise, the x10 belongs in the gutter of smart phones. Selecting small links in the browser is a huge pain and a lot of times when you mean to scroll in the browser the phone will open a link instead. The music player is beyond incoherency and just lacks all sorts of functionality while the iPhone uses the true and tried iPod format. Application wise the Android lags behind and x10 is even worse as a lot of apps do not support the 1.6 system. Without root, the x10 is even less customizable compared to a jailbroken iPhone. In conclusion, the x10 have a supierior hardware but it does not have the software needed to even make the everyday usage not frustrating -_- the iPhone is not as powerful, but it just works.
almaqdad, lifeflayer (and the others) ty for your answers.
first of all, i'm not ironic towards the x10's hardware.
don't know what to write lol.
i think i'm leaning towards the x10, but still not 100% sure.
waiting for more replies,
thanks !

No, it doesn't. The first iPhone will not be getting the 4.0 update. The iPhone 3G will not be receiving multitasking, or a few of the other new features of the update.
Same for the iPod touch.
Only the new models will get the full updates.
The Problem of the iPhone is the lack of Multitasking! I have both here an Iphone and an X10. The iPhone doesnt make me happy.
Simple expample. I'm on icq and receive an sms. To read the sms i must close icq (it doesn't stay in the background) and so i loose the icq messages sent in the meanwhile.
This is the problem with everything. it's solved through push notifications, but that has nothing to do with multitasking and won't work in icq for example, because if you simply closes the program icq server thinks you're still online and all messages send in this time are sent to /dev/null ^^
Second problem is that apple always wants you to use iTunes. You can't simply copy songs etc. off the phone (only the one that you buyed in iTunes). You're also not allowed to send songs through Blutooth to friends etc.
The iPhone OS seems to be pretty smart and like apple users say "snappy", BUT use it for a while and you see all the limitations of this OS (even with Jailbreak). If you are okay with this the iPhone is a good choice. If not choose an Android phone.
The only point which is a PRO an iPhone is multitouch, but I never needed it till now.
For me the X10 is much better than the iPhone.
So choose on of your friend and play with his iPhone for a couple of hours and you will see if its good for you or not.

Here is my 2 cents.
iPhone is limited by its hardware.
X10 is limited by its software.
In the long run, X10 will only go as far as the developers at SE make it go. So potentially, it could be one of the best Android phones on the market.
This is where it won't even compete with the iPhone.
iPhone is already proven to be a success. It's OS is super good and smooth. X10's OS is laggy and basically cripples the phone with its limitations.
Technology should be here and now. You want to have everything now, not later. And the problem is that the wait doesn't give what the end-users what they want - the current best thing.
So is the iPhone better than X10? Right now it is. And when iPhone 4g comes out, X10 would be eating the dust from Apple and other Android phones.

Thank you for your answers once again !
One question though; isn't the new update coming to the iphone providing multitasking ('cause this really is a big problem). If I finally pick the iphone, I'm getting the 3gs, so I'll be able to get the latest version of the OS right ?
Also, what arcticreaver said; I want (we all do) my features here and now !
From what I read on the forums, we are not even sure if the X10 will ever be root-able.
Ahh and by the way, do we know when iphone 4g or w/e it's called is coming out ?
~sekibun
Think about that and google for "Fast App Switch" on Iphone OS4.0
There is NO MULTITASKING in Os 4.0.
It's similar to Android but not so good. The OS 3.0 frezzes the Apps and send them so background (similar to Android) if you wanna use them they are waken up. BUT you can't let active apps in background, this will not be possible even with OS4.0, Apple only allows 2 more apps for real multitasking. There are still the same problems with OS4.0 than before. Only the apps start faster because they are frozen in background.
ICQ e.g. still won't work in background.
-Bin4ry
What's with all the bashing of the x10s software? It has some little lags sometimes but every smartphone has these kinds of lags. My jb iPhone was kinda slow and the browser crashed when surfing complex websites due RAM limitations. The iPhone is good for using as a mobile music and videoplayer. An Android device is good for nearly everything.
The x10 is not that bad with the 1.6 Android os. Multitouch is overrated. The browser experience is great. It's no problem for me to click the smart links on forums like xda. It was a pain in the ass with iPhone and hd2.
If you get an iPhone 3gs now you also could use the x10. The x10 maybe has some little limitations with Android 1.6 but the 3gs lacks hardware...

Now and Future
I have both of devices compared (Iphone and X10).
The size of both are the same, visible screen is juste larger than Iphone.
Speed :
User Interface speed : Iphone is faster and smoother
Web Speed : Android Web Browser is faster, but less reliable than Iphone,
but i think it will be better with Android 2.2
Applications : look the same, but X10 is more beatyfull
Application Store :
the Iphone AppStore is beter, more beautyfull and more reliable.
Install and Uninstall is more userfriendly on Iphone (i don't know how to uninstall on Android)
X10 Specific :
Camera (Photos) : One word ... Beatyfulll !!!! It quality is nearly my APN
Sony N1 (8.1 Mp too)...
->Iphone's Camera is very poor !!!
Videos : Beautyfull too !!! Actualy with 800x480/30is... Nearly a Midle
quality Numeric Camescope... And Sony Promess a 720p
Reacording with the next update Android 2.1...
->CyCirder is good, X10 is so far better..
Sound : Beauty full too... Realy Better than Iphone... but actualy not so
userfriendly like iPhone... Headset is very good quality
->Iphone's sound is good, but X10 is so far better...
I'm realy wait someone find a solution to be root on this device !!! Or hope to have the lastest Update (2.2)...
I don’t understand why people making so much big deal with a small limitation that Xperia X10 have with android OS 1.6 which incomparable with big problem that Iphone does with multi-tasking.

Some applications are allowed to run in the background, like skype, or the messenger applications.
Other applications like games and such are not allowed, and are instead frozen as you said.
Atleast, this is how I understood the whole thing.

I had a iphone 3GS and sent it back so I could get the Hero.
I'm not sure now if it was the best trade off? The Apps are much more polished as is the whole iphone OS. Now the 3GS can be jailbroken and unlocked it can be used on any network which is good because O2's 3G coverage is not good.
So... are you regretting the switch? would you go back to iphone?
I had the original iPhone and the 3G for ~6 months months, but haven't used either in more than a year. Since the iPhone, I've used a Blackberry Bold, e71, Xperia X1, and Touch Diamond 2.
The Hero has been the closest to an iPhone experience compared to any of those phones. No, it's not quite as polished, and nowhere near as fast as the 3GS (based on my brief experince with it), but its design, flexibility, and Sense UI makes up for it.
I've had iPhone users comment on the design of the Hero, as well as the Sense UI. It is the general consensus amung people that have played with my phone that the UI is far nicer designed than the iPhone design.
I couldn't stand the iPhone because it would always lock up when I tried to answer a call, which proved to be extremely frustrating. I don't get that with the Hero...in fact, it's the best PHONE I've had, with the exception of the Bold.
All in all, yes, the lag is annoying, and there are definitely a few things I would change, but for the most part, the Hero is the most enjoyable phone I've ever had, and don't regret switching from the iPhone (or any other phone) to it. Plus, the exclusivity of not having a phone that 10+ million other people have is always nice .
i keep wanting to sell my hero and go back to iphone, i hand the original 3g and now think the 3gs would have been a better purchase.
The only thing I really miss about the iPhone are some of the games. Games are a weak point for Android at the moment though this will eventually change as more and more handsets keep coming out and developers will be unable to ignore it. Come to think of it, that's about the only thing about the iPhone I actually liked lol.
I am missing my iphone a bit now that i'm using the hero. I think the iphone had one of the most fluid interfaces of any phone i've ever used. I miss the screen automatically turning on and off during a call when it is close to your face. I always try to turn off the screen during a call out of habbit on the hero and end up disconnecting the call. I also liked the hardware silence toggel on the iphone for quick ringer switching. The keyboard on the iphone was also a little bit more responsive and got more of my keystrokes correct. The main reason why I got the hero was for the widget and facebook integration. I got sort of board with the limits on the iphone os, and always having to open individual programs everytime I wanted to do anything. If the iphone started to offer home screen widgets i'd probably switch back in a heartbeat. I think the sense ui is cool, but until they make it less buggy, its just hard for me to fully enjoy it. I'm also getting mad at the fact that my facebook links in my contacts keep getting erased for no good reason, if anyone has an idea to why this happens and how to prevent it please share. Also i've noticed the signal and call quality are lower on the Hero than the iphone and my other HTC devices, I can hear a hiss in the background of all my calls, and tend to drop calls in places my iphone never did. Hopefully this can be fixed with a new radio version. I would like to keep my hero because I think it has so much potential, I just hope HTC releases some new firmware soon.
Well, though question...
I´ve had the iPhone 3G for more than a year now but bought the Hero after having drained the iPhone in a heavy rainfall. I also (don´t ask me why..) ordered the new 3Gs simultaniously and I´m still waiting for it...
I loved the iPhone, and still do, but the Hero is more "interesting" and more flexible when it comes to customization.
The iPhone is more "snappier" and more polished but the Hero is something fresh and interesting. Keep in mind that Android is still in it´s first year on the market which I find VERY impressing.
Will I keep the Hero, the iPhone or both? I seriously don´t know...
If both phones have had been new to me I would have bought the iPhone because of its (imo) still superior ease of use and "snappines".
Hero on the other hand is the only phone that I´ve met that can compete with iPhone on the ´overall experience´, the both ´simply works´ (...just that iPhone works a little bit better. Question is, will it last?).
I only know one thing for sure. It will take Microsoft more than ´some´effort to make me go back...
Video playback on iphone is unrivaled, The camcorder with editing is better than expected. Battery life is also better.
I waited ages for the Hero and really want to like it. But as with the facebook issues and the camera/video quality isn't great either? Video playback on the Hero is not great with the stuttering.
Seems the only thing going for the Hero is the widgets?

I actually totally agree with you. I tried to play an mp4 just now and get stuttering every 4-5 secs. The music app can't compete with the iphone either, I love the widgets and the customization on the hero, but as of right now that’s about it. I have another week to return it but I want to give HTC the benefit of the doubt that they will be upgrading software quickly. Man I don't know what to do.

Thats where i am with it. Dunno what to do and time is ticking before we get locked into contracts.
Maybe iphone is the way to go for now. Not to dismiss Android and HTC, maybe during next year's contract renewa'/upgrades HTC and Android maybe have caught up. But for now, the damm iphone just can't be beat on every count. Sure the widgets are great, but in 3-6 months (or less!) will the novelty wear off and we're left with a duff battery, dodgy signal reception, a less than impressive camera, don't even go there with video recording.
Tell ya what though.... being a geek is tough! and expensive!
I'm sticking with the Hero personally. I hate Apples ridiculous policies and I hate having to close out apps in order to use something else..it's so annoying. Android is getting there and Donut is coming soon which I hear is using 2.6.29 kernel which brings a nice little speed increase. I know more apps and games are on the way, especially since a couple major US carriers will be getting Android devices in the next couple months. Hero is coming here as is something from Motorola from what I hear. BTW, I think iPhone is so smooth because it only really runs one thing at a time while Hero for instance runs a lot widgets, sense ui, etc. I mean iPhone 3G has what a 434mhz processor? That's not much at all.

Agree on that but mhz isn´t everything. Hero is running a Qualcomm processor and iPhone 3G a higher quality (some say...) ARM processor.

Some good points there. I'm not sure the Hero will be able to upgrade to Donut. I understand its out the loop. I might be wrong though.
The thing is, its not just speed, actually i'm not bothered about that. I had a touch diamond before so the Hero flies in comparrison. Its the low quality camera/camcorder/battery life/video playback and signal quality that let it down.

It should be said that both the Qualcomm processor *IS* an ARM processor.
The IPhone 3G uses a Samsung designed processor based on the ARM11 core,
and the Hero a Qualcomm processor, again based on an ARM11 core.
The IPhone 3GS uses a Samsung processor again, but this is based on the superior ARM Cortex-A8 core.
Essentially ARM licenses processor cores to semiconductor manufacturers who then build their own SOCs (System on a Chip) by integrating a range of other components onto the same die.
I remember ARM when it stood for Acorn Risc Machines (not Advanced Risc Machines or just ARM as it does today!) and powered the Acorn Archimedes.

My Experience - iPhone / WinMo / Blackberry / Android
Hi,
I brought the original iPhone when it launched in the UK with no apps etc. Since then I have jumped about to Windows Mobile (Touch Diamond + Xperia X1) and also Blackberry (Storm - Curve 8900 - Bold).
Throwing myself back at Apple I got the 3GS when it launched, very nice phone and very fast.
My issues with Apple are the stupid controls they have around the app store and the refusal of background apps. (I totally understand the end user experience can be quantified with no running apps and for the less techy masses this is a good business move).
I however feel grown up enough to be able to manage my own running processes and know that if I run too many it will slow down.
I still do love my iphone and all the apps/games available but all through my iphone life I get drawn back to Windows Mobile as I can do so much on it.
Now I have been waiting for a unlocked Android phone to come along and jumped at the Hero as I have a company SIM card and no personal contract.
I am loving my Hero so far (been just over a week), its not perfect and does hang up sometimes, but at least it comes back quickly and I have not had to reset it etc. I am sure future builds will improve these things, I remember iphone 2.0 release!
Just so nice to be able to run FuriousStream and then actually continue to use my phone for checking mail/twitter/web etc. On my iphone it drove me nuts I had to close the streaming app!
Video recording is SO much better on the 3GS but in fairness for me is a very small part of what I use a phone for so not end of the world.
Sense UI is very nice, I like being able to customise the experience.
I get bored quickly and it saves me getting fed up with the same old.
Will I never go back to the iPhone??? Maybe/Maybe not. Too early to tell, but for me Android is like Windows Mobile as it should have been with background apps plus a good UI with a good marketplace but the option of just installing what you like with no one dictating to you straight from a developers webiste it you want.
Russ
I'm coming from this issue at a different angle. I had (still have) the Xperia X1 and although on the face of it it should do everything you want it is unresponsive at times even with the cooked ROMs that the geniuses here manage to cook (Thanks to them I didn't send the phone back!).
That being said I wasn't too enamoured with WinMo even in its 6.5 guise. Then there is the HTC issue with video which it should do well but never does. So my other contract was up and being an advocate of Linux and Open Source etc. I wanted an Android phone and was gonna go for the HTC Magic - I had a play around with it and even in its infancy Android just blows WinMo away. However the Magic is a touch underpowered and I was hearing not so pleasant things about Video.
Cue the Hero and I was about to jump onto it until... I read about the lag. I couldn't believe it - I didn't want another device that I had to fiddle with so much just to get it running smoothly. I then checked the HTC specs and it is the same that they use in all their phones - and given the video issues that cause problems for Coreplayer etc. I decided I wasn't gonna tie in to another contract on a phone which really should be good but with too many niggles to leave you disappointed.
I then went into the Apple Store to try out the new 3GS and was blown away by the speed, the apps, the seemless integration of everything and realised that it had finally come of age and it would be next device (which it is). It is the closest thing to an all in one device - nothing else comes close. Android will eventually - in fact I would argue in 18 months time it will have surpassed the iPhone and Apples policy of drip feeding features which should be standard. However HTC really needs to change the internals and start upgrading their processors etc. They have designed the most beautiful interface with Sense UI but their hardware just fails to match....
I say this as somebody who really did NOT want to get an Iphone but realised that the competition is still a bit behind and to be fair it is a fantastic device (of course not without its flaws but these are ones that I can live with). I hope my next device will be Android - I suspect though it won't be a HTC device....

To be honest, I'm not sure I agree with this. The hardware is perfectly capable - you just need to realize that if you have a lot running, it will slow the phone down. Thus far though, from my perspective at least, lag has not been a particular issue - yes, it is there, but it is not ever present (at least for me) and even when it does occur is really is only a minor hiccup. I can happily run MyTracks when walking and surf the web at the same time, and then take a phone call, or do any number of other things, but I appreciate that if I want to do them all at one it is going to be slower.
The iPhone will rarely suffer this kind of issue all the while that Apple mandate that 3rd party applications can't multi-task. I understand their point regarding the user experience, but surely they could allow a user to override this via a system setting.
I get the Apple experience - I really do! I have an iMac and a MacBook, but I really don't like the restrictions they're placing on the iPhone and the App Store, plus I should be able to decide what applications I install on my device.
The problem with the iPhone IMHO, is not the hardware or the software, but the fact that Apple seem to be of the opinion that you don't own your phone, you've just leased it from them!
Regards,
Dave
I used a iPhone as (and various other LG / Samsung dumb phones) my primary phone before I got my HTC Hero. I've been on the borderline weather to sell my HTC hero or not, I've decided not to for now... but it depends on what comes of any updates (if any).
At the end of the day - in my opinion - Android is as good as the iPhone software but only that 'as good' it does nothing better (and that's not saying much!) and I can see why some people comming from an iPhone might be disappointed... very disappointed.

Why would hero not get donut? Even if not officially released by HTC which would be odd, a 3rd party ROM will be released just like G1, Magic
Man this phone is just dropping the ball for me, I used it as an mp3 player tonight while I was at the gym and audio quality through the supplied headphones was not very good. There is no bass at all in the music and no option to adjust an equalizer, after a while the high treble and no bass started to give me a headache. Well I think this just pushed me to my answer, Hero is a sweet phone with incredible possibilities but I literally have a problem with 90% of the functions being inferior to iphone (other than phone freedom and customizations). It makes me sad because I was so excited for this phone and so bored with my iphone, but I just have to stick with what works the best. Hopefully these issues can get polished up real quick.
i am planning to upgrade my X1 to X10...so i am on android platform
but also considering other android phones such as Milestone.
wanted to know how satisfied are u with X10 on a scale 1-10?
did u regret it at all? (unbiased answers pls)
Hows the performance compared to other phones in similar hardware class?
I have had a long list of handsets every single version of blackberry, iphone and this is my first android for about a week now and I'm really happy with it. It's a project phone to me, always finding new things with it and the apps and personalizing it are endless.
Quality of apps are not as great as the iphone but it's still a VERY new platform and getting better by the day.
Hardware wise I'm very impressed, very speedy, impressive camera quality and I'm pretty picky, 9/10 for form factor, could be rounded or something. Robust little device and I hope it's not outdated for at least 8 months.
looks 9/10
quality 8.9/10 - screen scratches easily, voice quality is great
hardware 9.9/10
overall I'd say 9.2/10 compare to an iphone of 8.9/10
i do like the phone a lot. with better software or onceroot is availible it will be worlds better.
camera is great wish it had a flash though. screen is great and big for typing.
not overly happy with battery life but after reading a few suggestions it is better.
once a firmware upgrade is out and an upgrade to a more recent version of android my mind might change more in favor of this device. right now it gets an 8 out of 10
Sent from my X10a using the XDA mobile application powered by Tapatalk
I have just upgraded from X1 to X10 and I'm very impressed with the device.
Major drawback is low volume during calls.
Pluses definitely outweigh the minuses and the snapdragon 1 GHZ is lightning quick.
My opinion is go for it, you won't be disappointed.
Don't forget we are on first gen firmware which can only improve.

Ha~~ You are ask in right place,
I'm also upgrade from X1 to X10
Android is better than WM = =", Even my X1 use custom rom and faster than stock rom a 300%, but WM still lag, still ....ooxx
And My colleague have MileStone, Nexus One, Hero
But all colleagues want to get X10 when they see my X10 and play it a lot
Milestone is best for Rooted use, but slower than X10
Nexus One also have the latest firmware, rooted etc..benefit but is this really important???
Hero... actually not the same grade
I want to said X1 to X10 you can feel much better improve, actually when you jump from WM to Android you can feel it
Milestone VS X10
Outlook: I guess X10 is better but MS not bad, but MS heavy
Phone Feature: MS win, better speaker, clear and loud, also the IM volume is clear and MS have CrystalVoice, X10 speaker low, and the most important is the IM volume is very low.... MW600 is your friend = ="
Stylus: X10 win, the custom of the X10 and UI, Userfriendly is X10, But MS also can improve by Apps
Performance: slower than X10
Nexus One VS X10
Outlook: I think 99% people said X10 win
Phone Feature: I think is draw, Nexus one have Noise Cancel, but in the real world this feature seem not really good as Milestone, and the volume same as X10 still low
Performance: Faster than X10
Conclusion:
My choice is X10, even I played the Milestone and Nexus one and hero also
X10 is a very union product, you can feel this is the Sony phone, not like the MS or Nexus one, just only a Android
When you use X10, you will see many place has been modified and make the stylus in one "Sony Stylus"
Even the outlook and the UI you can see this is the phone which not like just only buy some band, and then the outlook is like a soap and UI alway HTC = ="
The Better Video Play back and the best camera on Android "like DC"
If you want to play the PHONE, you use MS or Nexus One
If you want to show up, use the PHONE, then X10
HA... when I goto street and show off the X10, many people watch my Phone, wow... what is this phone?? the outlook is very good, big screen and slim
Stylus: Still same as MS, it can root and improve the UI from apps
I too upgraded from X1 to X10, the X10 does feel 10 times better than the X1 (hence the name..?)
The reason why I picked X10 is almost the same reason why I picked X1 last year; the looks and the hardware. X1 was quite a powerhouse when snapdragon wasn't available in the market. However as you and I'd agree, X1 isn't a dream machine as we thought. The lagginess and lack of supports from SE quickly turns me off.
Picking the xperia series phone again wasn't an easy decision for me, it feels like I'm going back into the SE trap again. But I reconsider because of the improvement offered in the X10, 1Ghz, big screen, android, and still has the sexy appeal. I have been watching the phone closely for a year ever since there were leaked information on the internet, and reviews after the phone was finally out and eventually, hold my breath and clicked 'Buy Now' on eBay.
X10 is just like the X1, it isnt as impressive as the spec look like. But the difference is its more impressive than the X1, just not as exciting as you might expect. X10 will still give you the 'lag' experience especially at the animations department. To a some people the laginess is unacceptable due to the fact there is a 1Ghz cpu in the house. To me who came from X1 is acceptable because I've seen the worse.
Also believe me or not android isnt as mature as the windows mobile. There are quite a few basic functions the android lacks like task manager etc, and the dialler feels weird (press power button to reject call...?).
So if you still havent made up your mind yet, this is the factors I think you should consider
-are u a physical keyboard person? (I am, but I do not mind virtual keyboard either, I'm currently typing really slow on the phone, and without physical keyboard, u cant do 'blind typing'. I used to type my messages walking on the street without looking at the screen)
-are u a 100% sucker of graphics and animation? sure timescape looks impressive, but not an essential. And u need good looking profile pics of ur friends frm ur Facebook or twitter account to make timescape looks good. Most of my Facebook splines are showing only my friend's nose and lips due to their profile pics, makes my whole timescape look like a joke.
-can you live with android 1.6 until Q4 2010? X10 is my 1st android phone and I have not had the privilege to played with 2.1. So I'm not spoiled from the comfort of 2.1.
-can you live with single touch screen?
-do you expect the phone to perform as fluid as iPhone? IMO I have not seen other phone which can perform better than the iPhone at the animation department (HTC's Sense is pretty close). I personally do not want an iphones cause I've got an ipod touch, apple's control freak, and too many people has it.
And finally my rating! 9/10
Sorry for the long post but I hope I helped, because I have gone through the same decision making ;D
how the hell do i delete a post?
Deleted. Double post

Obviously depends on what features you really care about regarding your mobile phone, but OVERALL I think HTC's Desire is hands down the best phone on the market right now. I firmly believe the X10 could be, but in all honesty it could be until November until its potential is fully realized--pending promised firmware and OS updates.
So if you want the best phone,
Right now--HTC Desire
This year--Evo 4G, Samsung Galaxy S, maybe X10!
Satisfaction -- 7/10 X10 Overall -- 8.5/10
Some regret yes -- high cost, questionable updates from SE, poor battery life
X10's performance is not up to N1 or Desire, but other features and potential is why I bought it.

Ah thats why some callers are gone when I try to get my phone from back jean pocket
Veeeeeery happy thank you !! From what I was using (P1) 10/10 (what doesnt have a couple of niggles anyway ??)
Very, 9.5/10
Pretty damn satisfied, 8.5/10 (but I'm very difficult to satisfy)
Pros: too many to list, it really is an awesome device.
Cons: while I understand SE's philosophy behind the slow software releases, it doesn't make up for how SLOW they are at releasing them: 6+ months for an update to be customised & tested by them is unacceptable for a top-end device. In all honesty I've found no major issues to WANT the software update, but there are enough to make it a desirable thing to happen.
But, overall, it's a damn nice looking device and it works very well.
I'll give it 8.5 from 10.
Battery life is fine after a week or so when you stop pushing the phone limits
I mean, is a smartphone with 1Gig CPU and 4" display... you can't expect the battery to last 4 days like a dumb phone
If you use the smartphone, 12h battery is super.
If you turn everything off and use the phone (but i don't see the point) you can get 2days or more.
Design + UI, 10/10...
I don't care much about mediascape but timescape does the job.
Call volume ... i have no idea i use MW600 100% and is loud enough.
1.6 vs. 2.1 ?
2.1 will be nice but 1.6 will do it.
I was waiting for Galaxy S until after reading hundred of posts about Samsung "upgrades" i gave up.
Yes, will have a better display and divx/xvid support but Samsung has a bad habit to put new phones on market instead of supporting their old models so, pretty much you are stuck with what you buy.
I came from X1
Don´t buy a X10. Take a HTC instead. I give 2/10. I hate my X10. Poor hardware. Bad integrated hardware buttons ( bad to handle ), sad USB ( on the left????) No MT, bad Battery, POOR earspeaker quality and not loud enough, NO Sence.
What i hate most:
The Dialer
The Phonebook
The Call Log
The "Back" Hardware Button. Bad to reach. Need always to keep atention the X10 is not falling out of my hand. Why 3 or 4 hardware buttons? what did Google think when they did Android???? I hate also the iphone BUT there you have everywhere a "back" tab.
Instead of building TS and MS, SE should make a better usable interface like HTC ( Dialer..../ Sense) and EVERYWHERE a "Back/Cancel" tab.
AND i cant stand with the "select text" method in Android. That is bull****. Why not make it like it is on every computer ( and WM): wipe with your finger and the long press on the selected text and choose between cut, copy.....
i am thinking to change my X10 to a HD2 BUT THIS has no trackball
the perfect phone has a Trackball/ DPAD and maybe(!) two (good to handle) hardware buttons: Dial and Dial end/cancel
but there is no such phone on the market....
of course thats just my opinion ( but there are only 2: my opinion and the wrong opinion )
the last 4 weeks i made a list what i love on my X10 and what i hate: 2 things i love, 43 i hate. The list is a 17(!!!!) pages long word document and every page is FULL. The list took me about 50-70 hours, NO CHOKE!!!! I would post it here but its in german and to translate it would cost me again lots of hours.....
Best phone I have ever owned and I have owned the following phones in the last year:
iphone 3G
HTC Magic
HTC Hero
Nokia N900
People talk about lag but I have seen none. Best battery life of the bunch, too.

iphone 3G - i understand THAT!!!
HTC Magic - ? i think its much better than the X10
HTC Hero - ? i think its much better than the X10
Nokia N900 - i dont know this phone
I'm happy with it I went form the X1 to the X10 and have been a Windows Mobile fan for years. It's taking some getting used to but i'm getting there.
Battery life was a pain until I disabled Timescape and several other services.
well i would say i was very frustrating, waited for so long since the phone advertise, here in DUBAI we don't have marketplace inside the package but you can see the box there is marketplace icon weird!!!!!!!!!!!... the only thing that you can enjoy your android is to get some useful apps in the marketplace.... yet there is a word "debranding"and some of frnds manage to debrand there androids in UK version and they have this apps could MARKETPLACE..... but i want my phone to be a virgin as new with out debranding it!!!
rate 5 out of 10....
i only miss multitouch as i upgraded from hd2 which has very good multitouch ,i now returned to hd2 as my primary phone ,as i also hate android 1.6 i give it (4 out of 10) and hd2 (8 out of 10 )
My previous phone was iphone 3G, but with android phone I´m very satisfied!
Look 9/10
Functions 8/10 (missing camera flash, and divx support and a little MT)
Overall 8,5/10
Cons: low call volume (but I have MW600 and with it its great), for that price X10 can have stereo speakers, speed of releasing future updates (hope that SE will release updates faster... 2.1 in Q4 2010 wtf ??!)
I am a Xperia X1 user and am looking for a good android phone, which I have narrowed down to a Desire or a SGS.
I really like the added benefits of the SGS (Better Screen, 8GB internal memory, HD Video), but cannot deny the fact that the UI on the Desire (Sense) is much better than the Samsung setup….
What are your opinions on the standard system?
The reason why I am asking here is that you all will generally have experience with Sense, which all of the custom ROMs for my xperia has been brilliant over the past 18months (kept it alive).
I notice that the SGS XDA portal, has a lot less posts than the HTC Desire forum, but I am hoping that this is due to the fact that the Desire has been out longer than the Samsung.
I am due to upgrade my phone in 10 days so need to figure out which way to go.
All opinions are welcome!
When I purchase this phone my thought was:
1. UI and software can be update and modified, hardwares are fixed.
2. Communities and 3rd party supports for this phone, which are great right now.
These are enough for me.

I've had an iPhone 3G and a 3GS. Sold the 3GS a month ago to buy the iPhone 4. Due to every shop being out of stock on these babys, I decided to give Android a chance.
I nearly bought the Xperia X10 but in some shop they had a Galaxy S Demo Unit. I grabbed it and fell in love with it. It's so light-weight compared to other smartphones!
When I went home with it, I read some footage about it on engadget, gizmodo, etc. I didn't know it was the strongest Android phone at this time. I was very surprised and even more in love!
The screen is a blast.
I was in the same situation, though I was coming from a WinMo handset. I'm so happy with my choice, I know a few nexus one and desire owners who are now wanting a SCS - which says a lot.
My last phone was an HD2 with WinMo 6.5.5 wich have a wunderful community (Android development very fast).
But the Samsung i9000 is a nice Phone, with a wunderful screen, and 720p videoplayback and recording. And of corse, Android.
(Faster than HD2 [thanks Android], more Apps, 720p rec/play, etc...)
Thanks very much for the feedback guys... its good to get opionions of Win Mo users switching, as most reviews I have read on the internet is based on prev Iphone users (who's opinions I do not value).
Are you guys mostly using the stock SGS software, or running custom roms?

Do you prefer this phone to your HD2? The HD2 was a great phone (as was the TyTn II)!
I am using factory's rom with a little bit of addition: rooting + auto killer to manage memories.
From an Omnia i900 winmo. 6.5.5 user, I have no lags problem on this phone.
Well, how about the opinion of a user switching between iPhone 3GS, Symbian s60v3 and v5, WinMo6, 6.1, and 6.5 and Android 1.5, 1.6, and 2.1 phones, in order to find my perfect suite?!? Actually my last/previous phone was Vivaz PRO
It is really the best phone that i laid my hands on up to now.
Hardware-wise, unbelievable super AMOLED multi-touch screen, fantastic HD video camera, super-fast CPU, a lot of RAM, 8GB internal memory and VERY VERY light! (OK, I miss the LED flash, but I can live with that).
Software-wise, I believe, after a lot of experience with multiple OSs, that Android is the future (at least for the next couple of years). Very smooth OS, open to do everything you wish (root, custom firmware, install pirate soft, etc) easily, and VERY FAST GROWING/UPDATING (compared with WinMo and symbian, that feel a bit ancient by now).
Go for it bro! You wont regret!
Just sold mine galaxy s on ebay.. and for a very good price I am so happy now
If you are like me and use gps navigation a lot, simply run away from this phone.
I am now back to my HD2 (so happy I did not sell it). No navigation software can compare with tom tom.
All in all galaxy s has:
Superb screen:
HD video recording
And that is about it….
The gps is rubbish, don’t listen to the people telling you that they fixed it…
All “fixes” are just to provide fast network location fix (which in most cases is inaccurate)
With my HD2 it does not matter how cloudy it is, and how tall are the buildings around me,
I have GPS fix in 3-5sec and I MEAN GPS FIX, not network location fix.
SO I KNOW EXACTLY WHERE I AM.
2 days ago I was in central London and tried to find the closest tesco with google maps…
After 5min I just gave up… galaxy s simply could not do it
With HD2 things like that takes 10 to 20 sec (including typing tesco in the search bar)
I am also very disappointed with the android OS,
This thing does not even support external gps… we had that in winmo 10 years ago…
It has all sorts of problems, for example application starting on the background (consuming data) and there is simply no way for the user to control that.
One more thing the internal memory card is very very very slow and this slows down the devise a lot. Sure people will tell you about the sd card fix but REALLYYYY… should I start fixing the Samsung rubbish? No thanks, will stay away from Samsung and android for another 2 years (at least)
same here i always purchase my smartphones by the hardware spec, and the amount of Forums/groups available for it.
unfortunately the HTC Athena was flawed, the device itself is amazingly great, howerver support for it was low.
SGS i9000 on the other hand has a very lively group just like HTC Desire

mitko76 Good luck doing anything with GPS in central London...Buildings have this horrible side effect on ALL GPS systems.
Google maps is easily the best Search for phone, but not the greatest GPS, since is need a Connection to work if you deviate from the rout too much.
I've had this phone for w eek now and it is a great phone, there are a few niggles in the software, but believe me way less than stock windows mobile 6.5.
The screen isn;t as crisp as people would have you believe, White text on a dark background gives you a red effect around text and text Isn;t smooth, no where near the Iphone 4 IMO, however the contrast and colours are superb.
Give it a go if your on contract you have 7 days to return it.
Logicalstep
As a x1 user who has just upgraded to a Galaxy S a week past i can say that it is definetly worth it.
I did own a Desire for a day when i got it on contract but i didn't get coverage for the network in my area.
I find the Galaxy S to be a nicer looking phone, screen looks a lot brighter and better. Sound quality from the speaker is better and the UI also seems much faster.
It's a great phone, no questions asked, but you have to realize that it needs some work (like the fixes and all) and customization.
I'm using the imfamous JF3 stock rom and i do notice some lags and battery drain (but I use it very heavily, frequent syncs and updates, tons of widgets and all that) so i'm gonna switch over to the better ones.
I come from the Omnia II wich was a great phone but very poorly supported by samsung and the community. This isn't the case at all for the SGS. I used to have sense on my device, big fan of sense, but i like the SGS homescreen as well with the different pannels, really like it. Touchwizz is sort of a love/hate relationship
I'm loving android so far, even though i don't understand everything, i'm sure i could enhance my phone a lot.
hope this helps

Logicalstep, that is what I am trying to explain .. I DO NOT NEED “Good Luck” when using my hd2’s gps in central London, it simply work. I work in central London so trust me, I know what I am talking about.
If you are coming from a phone with poor gps I can understand your point, but hd2 simply has a proper gps unit in it and it is working no matter where I am. With HD2 I can even get gps lock in the train (10 sec), tried this with galaxy s and guess what... it FAILED (after 10min).
You can keep convincing yourself that the buildings are high, the sky is cloudy or God knows what ..
But the simple truth is the gps is rubbish.
Keep waiting for the NEXT firmware to fix the issues, and when it failed keep waiting for the next one and so on....
Mitko please do us a favour and leave the forum, we know that you sold your Galaxy S, and frankly its quite boring to see you posting on every thread and preaching slander. The GPS does take a short while to position (about 30-40 secs) but after that it works perfectly for me. I have used it on several occasions when lost in central London.
Since last December I've owned the following handsets: N900, HD2, Desire, X10, Galaxy S.
Of all of these the Galaxy S is my favorite, followed very closely by the HD2.

Coming from you that is high praise indeed.
Loving my SGS, no way am I going back to Symbian.
On my side I am coming from winmo6.5 and then iphone3GS
if i had an advice to give you in order to choose between the desire and the samsung it would be to know that :
* you won't have HTC sense on samsung ... I mean really nothing comparable.
* there is almost no button on the samsung .No trackball ( painfull for selection) no LED ... and it's quite annoying some time
Yes when I compare both with my colleague , mine has a better screen ( bigger , brighter) but it will worth it if you watch a lot of video or look at a lot of picture. If it's just to have more beautifull icon ... you will forget it looks better after few weeks
I am still a little bit uncertain about the GPS ... I need to do more tests and to check the settings I could enhance but it can't be compared to my TomTom ( on both winmo and iphone)
Hopefully there will be soon a real fix for the slowness of the SD card ... hopefully ...
Thanks guys, this is brilliant information!
I used the phone briefly in a phone shop yesterday, and I have to say that it looks very impressive! Especially compared to my x1 running Windows 6.5.3. The only first negative impression that I had was how cheap and flimsy the back cover was...but I hey, I know no phone will be perfect.
When my contract is up next week, and I am going to go for the SGS and as Logicalstep has commented I have 7 days to return it if unhappy.
I really appreciate the feedback, as it has made me allot more comfortable with going for the SGS.

I'm sure you will enjoy it
And honestly i agree about the cheap looking back but honestly that's why it is so light and you forget about this quickly.
Especially if you add a case ( you have some very thin one)
Please vote and post why you like your x10
And if you could have any phone right now other than x10 what would it be?
I own a Sensuous Black Xperia X10i and its one of the best phones out there. Though it has Android 1.6, it offers everything i want. It looks cool, works well, i get a good battery life. Am very satisfied with the phone
Yes,
Because I bought it! It has the design factor I am looking for, its android and its white and its Sony + its a perfect size, not too big like HD2 and not too small like iphone. It fits in hand really nicely. Since I like tech, I wished it had the most updated android as well but I will wait.
VERY happy with my X10!!! I sold my Nexus One running 2.2 for it. Never once did I look back and say "damn, why did I do that". Although the X10 is only running 1.6 it does a damn good job at it. The phone is sexy as hell, far better looking than alot of others out there imo anyway...and when 2.1 hits its gonna be SWEET!!!!
ps. I was all hyped about 2.2 when I had my nexus, when I got it ota I was very disapointed! all the hype for absolutly NO difference in my opinion....a couple extra useless options and did not notice any speed difference...so with the X10 just dropping 2.1 im totally cool with it.
No I am not happy with the Xperia x10 (I have the black one)
It looks cool as all hell, and has a nice display, but these problems are quite upsetting:
1. So sign of multi touch ever (Its important to me, dont care is anyone else cares or not)
2. I can hear people fine, though a bit quiet, but other can't hear me sometimes.
3. Typing on it is hard.
4. Screen collects fingerprints and does not have an oil resistant coating.
I find the phone runs fast, smooth. And I love the camera, but I can't put up with these issues.
Hope that someone accepts my offer to trade me either an iphone 3gs or 4

Typing on any touchscreen is a bit of a challenge with a full QWERTY keyboard - but withAndroid (even 1.6 ) you can install a plethora of other input options (ie. Swype, which is faster and easiter than anything ever.)
Oh, yeah, and I love my x10.

Yup was totally disappointed with the N1 the X10 is much better IMO. All the hype with 2.2 is overblown. On the N1 I didn't see the dramatic speed improvements. I don't even know what Google was thinking releasing Activesync support in the half broken state they did, at least in terms of corp. email support. I am curious to see how much faster the X10 will be with 2.1 on it.

Yeah I installed the HTC keyboard and it was better. I honestly think that the lack of MT is causing me issues. I can type with my wives iphone 3GS no problem and I think its because I am a very fast texter, hell I text faster than I type! I think I end up hitting multiple keys with the x10 causing the errors.

I can't say I was disappointed with the N1...but I sure was unhappy about froyo. While the N1 is without a doubt an awesome phone I love my X10 that much more. I can honestly say I don't want any other phone out there right now.

No.
Bought it when the multi-touch announcement came about, was on the fence until that. Was later greeted by the fact that it lacks it from a hardware standpoint, after spending my $600. Thought it was alright, could live without it. Grew more and more annoyed with laggy software, and then the straw that broke the camel's back was that I started having random restarts.
My phone is now un-usable if there is a sim card inside (will restart on boot), and is waiting to be shipped out to SE for repair.
What phone would I get if I had the option? Probably the EVO 4G or the Iphone 4.
NO
i got SE X10 white
i admit its sexy as hell
but
1- in call volume is very low , i barely can hear people when im walkin in the streets
2- lack of MT
3- low amount of RAM unlinke nexus
4- it lags alot of times
YES.
I bought the phone the day it came out and it set me back bought 700$. Coming from an iPhone that wasn't jailbroken before ios having an x10 was a whole new view on freedom. It was first laggy at first, but after debrand, rooting, new software, etc. I'm starting to like this phone a lot. Only lags on lock screen.
Browsing is great on the huge screen and typing on the horizontal keyboard isn't awkward like the iPhone. Tactile feedback is great too. The only thing ill probably ***** about is no multitouch. Can't play fps games like on iPhone. But its only games.
Writing reports on the phone in documents to go is great too.

Like the phone so much. I learn something new everyday. White has a killer looks. One guy who owns a 3GS told me after playing with my phone for your few minutes and after I shown him the demo movie that was on the phone, that he's going to buy one. Android Market is great, whatever you want your phone to do, there's an application in the Market that will make it happen...
I have the Sensuous Black too, and love it!
It's a Sony Ericsson, it's touch-screen, it's Android & it's a beautiful piece of equipment, and even if it wasn't getting an O.S upgrade would have still bought it. 1.6 gives me everything I need, so the upgrade is going to be nothing more than a bonus for me.
Yup, love mine with exception of bluetooth not working with my car kit. 9/10

I'm not voting because I don't even know if I'm happy with my x10. Being my first Android phone, I can say that I'm having fun playing around with it, and its non-iPhone-like looks allows it to stand out from the crowd. Somehow, I'm having regrets on buying it, but I think I would probably still feel some regrets if I had gotten a Nexus One or Galaxy S (btw Galaxy S was available to me at $0, as was the X10). I guess I'm just not ready for the Android platform, as I still feel that it's much easier to make phone calls on a Symbian(Nokia) phone. Also, the lack of Ovi Maps and PuTTy on my new phone leaves much to be desired. Connectbot just doesn't cut it, as lots of page switching is required when using it with Full Keyboard. Not exactly the kind of hassle a VIM user would expect.
My other gripes with the X10 are probably the common ones mentioned throughout the X10 community, like the outdated OS, MT, yada yada. Still, I'd give anything to own an Android phone which doesn't look like the iPhone.
Edit: Hah, this is funny. About 30 minutes after I posted this message, I received an update notification about Connectbot. Turns out the new update allows me to send Ctrl and Esc without having to use Full Keyboard, so I'm all good with VIM now
i voted no because i got the phone the first month it was relased. so i just used it for one month and the phone died :'( from april till now trying to find a solution :'( wish it comes back to life some day... now im really thinking about getting an x10min pro and move on with my life right now just using the crazy wild x1
Hells yeah.
Absolutely no problems with the phone. Tons of great features!

Where did you get it from?
EDIT: Just bumped one of your posts.
Maybe.
Why?
Because at the moment I don't have Wi Fi or a data plan, so I don't know the full features of the phone. I'm in a new country before school has started, so no contacts because I haven't made friends yet. So really, there is not much use for me except listening to a few songs and watching podcasts.
I personally like Apple's iTunes store to get applications and to easily transfer media to your device. There is no such online store for Android. It makes my life harder because you are forced to use an internet connection on your phone to get apps.
It also sucks that you can't make your computer internet connection (wired) into a wireless one for your phone to use. You can do the reverse, tethering, but no reverse-tethering.
Plus the battery life is concerning me. I'm forced to uninstall applications that I may use later on for a better battery life. My iPod touch has better battery life than the SE Xperia X10.
I'll just have to see after I get my Wi Fi working. At the moment I rarely even use my phone. Hopefully it turns into a miracle.
Hi! I'm thinking about the X10, just wondering if anyone can offer some advice. Some background: I had HTC aria, specs aren't as high-end as other droid phones, but it worked extremely well -- email, GPS, music player, and interface was great. No issues whatsoever, except the camera wasn't so great. I cracked the screen and decided to go for the Samsung Captivate. The specs on the Captivate are great, camera is great, but basically nothing works with it: GPS takes 30 seconds to 1 minute to lock, it loses lock, email crashes, interface is nothing compared to HTC, wi-fi connects but sometimes doesn't work.... Great hardware, but everything is buggy. So I will return it and pick out another phone. Are you satisfied with the X10? what could be improved? What is great about it? I'd really appreciate it, thanks a lot.

X10 is a great phone, but SE needs to step up there game! If anything, I'd suggest you go for a phone with company that has much more experience with the Android software...
ATM there are many bugs with the current android build (1.6) and it is outdated, but within the week, there should be a 2.1 update, which should definitly boost the performance of the phone.
The main thing I know many people look for is multitouch. Recently there has been some discussion on if the phone has MT or not, and a few videos showing it, but so far no one (no one publicly) has shown how to unlock the MT feature on the phone.
x10 has a beautiful big screen, but it doesnt support 16m colours
But, I don't think its a big deal.
Overall, the phone is good, but it has the potential to be so much more better; only if SE allows it, I mean...
If I could recommend a phone, I'd say the HTC Desire HD. (thing that sucks about HTC is that they always have so many phones coming out, so there's a chance it might get outdated quick).

Anyway X10 is pretty good but I'd buy a Desire HD instead.
Think twice before you buy X10. The phone itself isn't bad, but the product is not all - support given by its manufacturer matters too - and as you can see (just hop around X10 XDA's board), SE doesn't do the job very well. I'd go for HTC.
The X10 is probably the most beautiful phone out there right now and the 2.1 update which is about to be released should give it a new lease of life... if you want to be able to root your phone for custom ROM's don't get the X10.. the 1.6 bootloader hasn't been cracked yet, and SE will no doubt have made it even harder in the 2.1 iteration..
Multitouch may be possible.. video's on you tube recently suggest it is.. but TBC!!.. 16m colours doesn't really make a great deal of difference to most.. but could be delivered in the next update (not the one that's about to be released.. the one after).
All in all it's a great bit of kit but has been held back by 1.6.
Great phone, beautify software and outdated android OS. Two months after the 2.1 update, 2.1 will be outdated and people will start complaining again.
If you care about getting the last android OS or Multitouch, don't consider this phone(and i suggest going with HTC for this matter).
Anyway i kinda like my X10. I think it's a great phone, and i also think SE have leaned the lesson and they will do their job on the next update.
The X10 is certainly not perfect. It is currently on Android 1.6 but the update to 2.1 will begin anyday now.
Now, let's compare a couple of things that, for me anyway, make the X10 standout. First, the style and build quality are outstanding. The physical buttons are also a nice plus. Second, and more importantly, the X10 is the only Android device that comes with a full end-to-end syncing solution that works with playlists and is simple to use. You only have to install MediaGo on your PC, nothing needs to be installed on the phone. This is something very lacking on other Android devices. Yes, there are third party solutions, but none of them work as well as MediaGo does (IMO).
Keeping that in mind, and that 2.1 apps will be possible within the next month, the X10 actually does have a lot to offer. Also, if GPS is important to you, the X10 has the best GPS I have ever personally tested. I work in the third floor of an office building. This floor is designed to be a storm shelter (in Florida, flooding and wind are what you protect against). It is 100% encased in cement. I can get a GPS lock inside the building. Yes, GPS lock, 3G radio and WiFi off, and I get a GPS lock. That is amazing to everyone I have shown it to.
Yes, the X10 gets a quick GPS lock everywhere.

ive wrote on x10 pros and cons , also compared to iphone's pros and cons, there:
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showpost.php?p=8859013&postcount=171
(if you want cheapest 1ghz 4" HD screen on a phone - buy x10. if you have more money, check for other phones, like htc desire, Z, HD, samsung galaxy. )
How can you recommended Galaxy S when this guy already has it (Captivate is the AT&T variant of the phone) and is looking to make the switch to another phone?
The x10 is not for you. You found faults and lost patients with possibly the best phone on the market (the galaxy S) and I understand those issues would make anyone think twice but the truth is Samsung will iron out those issues with software updates within weeks or days. SE have no plans to upgrade the x10 to 2.2 which is all kinds of bad.
Buying any other phone will at least mean you are able to enjoy more up to date apps and features that are out now rather than simply watching everyone else enjoying the innovations developers or Google them selves launch.
I'm past putting SE down, its a really simple choice to make.
There are apps currently on the market that will only work on android 2.2 and while other users with HTC Hero's enjoy at least testing out what flash is like the x10 users like myself will have to wait until we change our phone at the end of our contract or save up and buy an HTC Desire HD.

I am sorry to tell you but I did exactly that. I had a Captivate for 28 days. The faulty GPS, and myriad of other stability issues, did not make up for the screen and GPU on the Galaxy S devices.
The GPS issue has been around for many months, with no resolution in sight. There are people with the official 2.2 and still no GPS fix. It's beginning to look like there is no fix. Also, the Galaxy S updates have been very slow too. I am fairly certain that is due, in large part, to the stupid proprietary file system Samsung chose. If you must have the latest OS, then I would suggest getting an HTC device. The Galaxy S devices are nowhere near what they should be, based solely on specs.
Well.. X10 is very good at social networking for twitter and facebook. plus browsing emails is nice and easy. Even though it had 1.6 OS but it is a very stable considering the outdated OS ( at least my X10 is ). And the INFINITY button is very usable you cannot find that in any other android, one click and all the information regarding a video, contact, picture or music is in you hands
but true, if you want the latest OS you should go with HTC Desire HD or wait for the 4G
if you want something unique in terms of UI then X10 is the one
I'm currently considering the opposite path from X10i to Galaxy S myself.
IMHO the suitability of whether you should get the X10 depends on the personality of the user. The X10 is more suited to those that are less technical and I think the Galaxy S is suitable to those who are more technically competent and know how to apply the fixes to the minor problems.
Here are the pros and cons I'm looking at for the X10 vs Galaxy S:
X10:
Pros:
Screen works in sunlight, Nice applications that come with the phone like Mediascape/BackupRestore, Physical hardware buttons (Physical buttons supposedly last longer, nice physical design, Nice camera(not great but nice)
Cons:
Awful support from Sony Ericsson, Android 1.6 (equals much less choice of applications although 2.1 is coming, we are still behind), Multitouch disabled by Sony Ericsson, no decent custom ROM from XDA (futureproofing is uncertain)
Galaxy S:
Pros:
Beautiful screen, Faster hardware, better multitouch, currently has XDA dev custom roms (means it can be more future proof)
Cons:
Screen somewhat works in Sunlight, Less awful support from Samsung, Terrible support if you're using a Galaxy S variant (You can't expect much from your carrier), phone is kind of ugly, some lag and GPS problems (You can get it fixed if you configure it properly and apply the fixes from XDA)

I did recall mentioning other phones than the Galaxy S but thank you for filling us in on the issues you had as I wouldn't want someone to blindly grab a Galaxy S not knowing that it possibly has an hardware issue. I had heard a few things about the GPS issue but the two geeks I work with who have Galaxy S's have bigger smiles than the two x10 owners in the office.
That said in the UK if you have hardware issues and there is a hardware revision because of this issues there are still options for you to get that revised hardware for free but I think SE have proved that if the phone OS locked down and the issues are software based your options are less.
Given the choice between GPS & multi touch I'll choose multi touch every time. I can simple look around to know where I am or get real old school and right down directions like I used to ten years ago or better still go and buy a GPS unit and connect via Bluetooth.
I might be able to buy a Wii remote to play games (which I'm going to do today) but that doesn't really replace Multi touch.

I really don't think x10 is a good phone.
Let me say what i do like about it.
Great camera & best onboard keyboard i have used(i have big fingers).
Good sync software (PC access to files).
This is my spare phone, i got it when i resigned my contract as they don't sell HD2's here in NZ. It may be that i am really happy with windows mobile, but i just don't get android. I must say i am a business user (tool not toy).
The screen scratches (need glass not plastic)
charging port at the top? - not practical for vehicle use with holder.
ok thats my 2 cents worth
