i am planning to upgrade my X1 to X10...so i am on android platform
but also considering other android phones such as Milestone.
wanted to know how satisfied are u with X10 on a scale 1-10?
did u regret it at all? (unbiased answers pls)
Hows the performance compared to other phones in similar hardware class?
I have had a long list of handsets every single version of blackberry, iphone and this is my first android for about a week now and I'm really happy with it. It's a project phone to me, always finding new things with it and the apps and personalizing it are endless.
Quality of apps are not as great as the iphone but it's still a VERY new platform and getting better by the day.
Hardware wise I'm very impressed, very speedy, impressive camera quality and I'm pretty picky, 9/10 for form factor, could be rounded or something. Robust little device and I hope it's not outdated for at least 8 months.
looks 9/10
quality 8.9/10 - screen scratches easily, voice quality is great
hardware 9.9/10
overall I'd say 9.2/10 compare to an iphone of 8.9/10
i do like the phone a lot. with better software or onceroot is availible it will be worlds better.
camera is great wish it had a flash though. screen is great and big for typing.
not overly happy with battery life but after reading a few suggestions it is better.
once a firmware upgrade is out and an upgrade to a more recent version of android my mind might change more in favor of this device. right now it gets an 8 out of 10
Sent from my X10a using the XDA mobile application powered by Tapatalk
I have just upgraded from X1 to X10 and I'm very impressed with the device.
Major drawback is low volume during calls.
Pluses definitely outweigh the minuses and the snapdragon 1 GHZ is lightning quick.
My opinion is go for it, you won't be disappointed.
Don't forget we are on first gen firmware which can only improve.

Ha~~ You are ask in right place,
I'm also upgrade from X1 to X10
Android is better than WM = =", Even my X1 use custom rom and faster than stock rom a 300%, but WM still lag, still ....ooxx
And My colleague have MileStone, Nexus One, Hero
But all colleagues want to get X10 when they see my X10 and play it a lot
Milestone is best for Rooted use, but slower than X10
Nexus One also have the latest firmware, rooted etc..benefit but is this really important???
Hero... actually not the same grade
I want to said X1 to X10 you can feel much better improve, actually when you jump from WM to Android you can feel it
Milestone VS X10
Outlook: I guess X10 is better but MS not bad, but MS heavy
Phone Feature: MS win, better speaker, clear and loud, also the IM volume is clear and MS have CrystalVoice, X10 speaker low, and the most important is the IM volume is very low.... MW600 is your friend = ="
Stylus: X10 win, the custom of the X10 and UI, Userfriendly is X10, But MS also can improve by Apps
Performance: slower than X10
Nexus One VS X10
Outlook: I think 99% people said X10 win
Phone Feature: I think is draw, Nexus one have Noise Cancel, but in the real world this feature seem not really good as Milestone, and the volume same as X10 still low
Performance: Faster than X10
Conclusion:
My choice is X10, even I played the Milestone and Nexus one and hero also
X10 is a very union product, you can feel this is the Sony phone, not like the MS or Nexus one, just only a Android
When you use X10, you will see many place has been modified and make the stylus in one "Sony Stylus"
Even the outlook and the UI you can see this is the phone which not like just only buy some band, and then the outlook is like a soap and UI alway HTC = ="
The Better Video Play back and the best camera on Android "like DC"
If you want to play the PHONE, you use MS or Nexus One
If you want to show up, use the PHONE, then X10
HA... when I goto street and show off the X10, many people watch my Phone, wow... what is this phone?? the outlook is very good, big screen and slim
Stylus: Still same as MS, it can root and improve the UI from apps
I too upgraded from X1 to X10, the X10 does feel 10 times better than the X1 (hence the name..?)
The reason why I picked X10 is almost the same reason why I picked X1 last year; the looks and the hardware. X1 was quite a powerhouse when snapdragon wasn't available in the market. However as you and I'd agree, X1 isn't a dream machine as we thought. The lagginess and lack of supports from SE quickly turns me off.
Picking the xperia series phone again wasn't an easy decision for me, it feels like I'm going back into the SE trap again. But I reconsider because of the improvement offered in the X10, 1Ghz, big screen, android, and still has the sexy appeal. I have been watching the phone closely for a year ever since there were leaked information on the internet, and reviews after the phone was finally out and eventually, hold my breath and clicked 'Buy Now' on eBay.
X10 is just like the X1, it isnt as impressive as the spec look like. But the difference is its more impressive than the X1, just not as exciting as you might expect. X10 will still give you the 'lag' experience especially at the animations department. To a some people the laginess is unacceptable due to the fact there is a 1Ghz cpu in the house. To me who came from X1 is acceptable because I've seen the worse.
Also believe me or not android isnt as mature as the windows mobile. There are quite a few basic functions the android lacks like task manager etc, and the dialler feels weird (press power button to reject call...?).
So if you still havent made up your mind yet, this is the factors I think you should consider
-are u a physical keyboard person? (I am, but I do not mind virtual keyboard either, I'm currently typing really slow on the phone, and without physical keyboard, u cant do 'blind typing'. I used to type my messages walking on the street without looking at the screen)
-are u a 100% sucker of graphics and animation? sure timescape looks impressive, but not an essential. And u need good looking profile pics of ur friends frm ur Facebook or twitter account to make timescape looks good. Most of my Facebook splines are showing only my friend's nose and lips due to their profile pics, makes my whole timescape look like a joke.
-can you live with android 1.6 until Q4 2010? X10 is my 1st android phone and I have not had the privilege to played with 2.1. So I'm not spoiled from the comfort of 2.1.
-can you live with single touch screen?
-do you expect the phone to perform as fluid as iPhone? IMO I have not seen other phone which can perform better than the iPhone at the animation department (HTC's Sense is pretty close). I personally do not want an iphones cause I've got an ipod touch, apple's control freak, and too many people has it.
And finally my rating! 9/10
Sorry for the long post but I hope I helped, because I have gone through the same decision making ;D
how the hell do i delete a post?
Deleted. Double post

Obviously depends on what features you really care about regarding your mobile phone, but OVERALL I think HTC's Desire is hands down the best phone on the market right now. I firmly believe the X10 could be, but in all honesty it could be until November until its potential is fully realized--pending promised firmware and OS updates.
So if you want the best phone,
Right now--HTC Desire
This year--Evo 4G, Samsung Galaxy S, maybe X10!
Satisfaction -- 7/10 X10 Overall -- 8.5/10
Some regret yes -- high cost, questionable updates from SE, poor battery life
X10's performance is not up to N1 or Desire, but other features and potential is why I bought it.

Veeeeeery happy thank you !! From what I was using (P1) 10/10 (what doesnt have a couple of niggles anyway ??)
Very, 9.5/10
Pretty damn satisfied, 8.5/10 (but I'm very difficult to satisfy)
Pros: too many to list, it really is an awesome device.
Cons: while I understand SE's philosophy behind the slow software releases, it doesn't make up for how SLOW they are at releasing them: 6+ months for an update to be customised & tested by them is unacceptable for a top-end device. In all honesty I've found no major issues to WANT the software update, but there are enough to make it a desirable thing to happen.
But, overall, it's a damn nice looking device and it works very well.
I'll give it 8.5 from 10.
Battery life is fine after a week or so when you stop pushing the phone limits
I mean, is a smartphone with 1Gig CPU and 4" display... you can't expect the battery to last 4 days like a dumb phone
If you use the smartphone, 12h battery is super.
If you turn everything off and use the phone (but i don't see the point) you can get 2days or more.
Design + UI, 10/10...
I don't care much about mediascape but timescape does the job.
Call volume ... i have no idea i use MW600 100% and is loud enough.
1.6 vs. 2.1 ?
2.1 will be nice but 1.6 will do it.
I was waiting for Galaxy S until after reading hundred of posts about Samsung "upgrades" i gave up.
Yes, will have a better display and divx/xvid support but Samsung has a bad habit to put new phones on market instead of supporting their old models so, pretty much you are stuck with what you buy.
I came from X1
Don´t buy a X10. Take a HTC instead. I give 2/10. I hate my X10. Poor hardware. Bad integrated hardware buttons ( bad to handle ), sad USB ( on the left????) No MT, bad Battery, POOR earspeaker quality and not loud enough, NO Sence.
What i hate most:
The Dialer
The Phonebook
The Call Log
The "Back" Hardware Button. Bad to reach. Need always to keep atention the X10 is not falling out of my hand. Why 3 or 4 hardware buttons? what did Google think when they did Android???? I hate also the iphone BUT there you have everywhere a "back" tab.
Instead of building TS and MS, SE should make a better usable interface like HTC ( Dialer..../ Sense) and EVERYWHERE a "Back/Cancel" tab.
AND i cant stand with the "select text" method in Android. That is bull****. Why not make it like it is on every computer ( and WM): wipe with your finger and the long press on the selected text and choose between cut, copy.....
i am thinking to change my X10 to a HD2 BUT THIS has no trackball
the perfect phone has a Trackball/ DPAD and maybe(!) two (good to handle) hardware buttons: Dial and Dial end/cancel
but there is no such phone on the market....
of course thats just my opinion ( but there are only 2: my opinion and the wrong opinion )
the last 4 weeks i made a list what i love on my X10 and what i hate: 2 things i love, 43 i hate. The list is a 17(!!!!) pages long word document and every page is FULL. The list took me about 50-70 hours, NO CHOKE!!!! I would post it here but its in german and to translate it would cost me again lots of hours.....
Best phone I have ever owned and I have owned the following phones in the last year:
iphone 3G
HTC Magic
HTC Hero
Nokia N900
People talk about lag but I have seen none. Best battery life of the bunch, too.

iphone 3G - i understand THAT!!!
HTC Magic - ? i think its much better than the X10
HTC Hero - ? i think its much better than the X10
Nokia N900 - i dont know this phone
I'm happy with it I went form the X1 to the X10 and have been a Windows Mobile fan for years. It's taking some getting used to but i'm getting there.
Battery life was a pain until I disabled Timescape and several other services.
well i would say i was very frustrating, waited for so long since the phone advertise, here in DUBAI we don't have marketplace inside the package but you can see the box there is marketplace icon weird!!!!!!!!!!!... the only thing that you can enjoy your android is to get some useful apps in the marketplace.... yet there is a word "debranding"and some of frnds manage to debrand there androids in UK version and they have this apps could MARKETPLACE..... but i want my phone to be a virgin as new with out debranding it!!!
rate 5 out of 10....
i only miss multitouch as i upgraded from hd2 which has very good multitouch ,i now returned to hd2 as my primary phone ,as i also hate android 1.6 i give it (4 out of 10) and hd2 (8 out of 10 )
My previous phone was iphone 3G, but with android phone I´m very satisfied!
Look 9/10
Functions 8/10 (missing camera flash, and divx support and a little MT)
Overall 8,5/10
Cons: low call volume (but I have MW600 and with it its great), for that price X10 can have stereo speakers, speed of releasing future updates (hope that SE will release updates faster... 2.1 in Q4 2010 wtf ??!)

after X1...i feel little apprehensive to buy another sony ericsson phone..the way they ditched their customers..i kinda feel betrayed..the phone feels like crap now...outdated OS...laggy interface, finger- unfriendly.

- how useful is timescape/mediascape?
now saw the forum..and X10 also has sufficient amount of bugs compared to other Android phones...infact much more than any other high end android phone
it is a cool phone..looks classy..good to show off.
-but does it perform decently as a phone?...will i have problems making phone calls & texting?
-and will rooting come on X10? ...coz i want a phone i can customize later..and not a phone which becomes dinosaur like X1

I believe you answered your own question
I'll be honest,
I was fortunate enough to have an HTC Desire for 2 weeks before I got the X10...
I sold the desire because I was under the impression that the only things I didn't like about the X10 were to do with Android 2.1 which would be sorted in the update.
After playing with the X10 I'm starting to miss the Desire - the camera seemed to be better with crisper images (surprising?! YEP!!) but again, I'm hoping this will all change with updates, so I'm kind of relying on SE to sort all this out with updates.
I do like the X10, don't get me wrong, BUT I think I will like it even more assuming that I'm right that the updates will sort out the issues.
You are right to be apprehensive. I jumped on this a soon as it was released in the UK. Even though their was a lot of controversy about the specs I bought this.
I also knew the Desire was about to be released to at around the same time.

MediaScape is very pretty indeed but i still find myself using the stock music app from time to time for the best functionality.
With Mediascape I have noticed that it does take a few button presses to get to where you want to go. This is down to both the menu structure and the fact on my current firmware the app doesn't always respond to my key presses. I have also found that the pics that i have tagged regularly revert back to their untagged state. The ability to create playlists using Mscape on the device is also lacking.
I tried setting Timescape as my homescreen but it suffered from serious slow down on launch. The app draw was also affected so I reverted back to the stock android's 3 homescreens and the phone was lightening quick again.

In short NO. as phone it is hit a miss. The In-Call Volume is far too quiet and and turned up to max volume on 1.6 you get background interference.
In addition to this there are no initiate call\ end call hard keys sometime feels like there too many options/button presses to make and receive calls.
It works but I feel that it's not as intuative as HTC's own design.
Texting.. Again out of the box texting can be quite a task as the SE keyboard doesnt always recognise key presses. However this can be narrowed down to specific keys when it happens.
You can overcome this though by installing the HTC keyboard or by using Better keyboard from the market.
One more thing to note with text is that TimeScape offers full conversation history with images too and it all looks very tidy. However when you want to respond to message you are taken into what looks like different app that looks less impressive. On the plus side the sms app works in landscape.
On the Plus side, the screen is glorious, browsing is a joy, the OS although not 2.1 is still a joy to use (Comparing to my old Hero on 1.5).
Google maps with Nav and the Camera are also great.
I can't say im completely satisfied with the X10 and on occasion I have been tempted to swap for a Desire. However I have this foolish hope that SE will come good and make this device what it was designed to be. I'm sure you will have heard about the planned updates.

I think Root will come eventually but at the moment this device isn't as popular as other android handsets because of SE's past record. It's also evident that alot of people are tempted by the x10, but are not sure wether to make the commitment.
HTC is the safe choice (tried and tested) and I thats why they get root first.
don't do my mistake x10 is shi*ty htc rules ,i regretdd leaving my hd2 ,i will threw the x10 into garbage and return my hd2 to be my main device ,or buy a desire . the x10 feels to be a prerelease prototype device ,very un usable

Right... Very unusable and you threw it in the garbage and then returned to WinMo..
Something tells me theres a fair bit of bull**** floating around.
Infact, coming from the HD2 to the X10, the HD2 is much more unusable than the X10. The X10 is FAR FAR more responsive than any WinMo device

I agree, I came from HD2 to Desire ( for 3 weeks), and now to X10
Desire was a great phone , but lacked that wow factor, was a little bit too boring in design ( personal choice of course)
Reason I want back to the X10 was the screen size, I found the Desire too small.
When we get 2.1 or 2.2 on this phone, it will be the best around, so we need to pray for root as soon as possible. But as usual, in 3 months, there will be something newer out there.
I want to tell you my story : I had the same experience with SE X1 so I was looking for another choice, first thing I decided NO MORE WM , X1 was my first and last windows mobile . I read about Android but never try, I was looking on the net, reading reviews and previews , I found out that the Desire would be the best, but its design was boring not like the fascinating X10.
X10 is the first SE Android experience because of that there might be some bugs, but now after one month using it I can tell you two words GO AHEAD .... that exactly the device which I was looking for, changing from X1 to X10 is like from hell to heaven .
I think a lot of great things will come soon : X10 will be rooted then it will get Android 2.1 (in Q4 2010)
P.S: as an Arabic user I am suffering that the device doesn't support my language, but it's still my favorite

No, that's not true. There's always an over representation of people who have problems on forums! And to tell you the truth, I have no problems at all with my phone. Bug free and lightning fast with the latest update. Mind you that I never use Timescape or Mediascape, but that's me! And the Desire has bugs too.
Hmmm didnt you started a similar thread before?
If you i had given you my opinion there. In short x10 is not a bad phone. If your expectation is high then you're likey to get dissapointed. Desire is a better option. But not the best looking phone imo.
And dont let timescape and medisca
pe affect your decision they are hardly useful

Why is the Desire a better option? Because it has Android 2.1? Or is it because it displays gray colors as pink? Or maybe because it is unusable in the sun? Or maybe its the poor reception it receives or crappy pictures it takes? The desire has plenty of negatives that people are writing about all over the place, but it's still a GREAT phone. For my money I prefer the X10, some people will prefer the Desire, and that's fine, but my expectations were extremely high with the X10 and it has met every one of them, it's a fantastic phone.

Agreed, i had my x10 for a day and its been excellent.
I've had a few niggles with the phone, but nothing major.. I love it, such a great bit of kit.. fast, responsive, clear picture, generally very good ui.. have persevered with Mediascape and quite like it now.. just occasionally use the default mail app to make playlist (which irritatingly can't do in mediascape.. )
managing to get a full day out of the battery now too, and that's with quite a bit of use..
so.. onto OS/ firmware - They've already released a couple of minor build changes.. and another bigger one coming out in the next week or so.. then Android 2.1 (probably not 2.2 or later) in Q4 this year.. I'm not bothered about MT, but then I'm not a big gamer.... all things considered though. A1.6 is pretty damned good anyway.. (my missus has a HTC legend which is great.. but I still prefer my X10..!!
I too came from an X1 to an X10, and couldn't be happier. Even with the X1 modded with an HTC interface, this phone is so much more enjoyable to use. Such a smooth and responsive user experience compared to that one.
My friend has a Desire btw, and on the same network, on the same physical spot, my X10 has better signal reception and higher download speeds. Plus, for some reason the X10 both starts and shuts down WAY faster. So the Desire isn't all that much more desireable in my experience.

Sorry for being blunt, i was actually reading this thread on the phone and couldnt type long.
Our hesitating friend here is looking for something that he/she can show off. No doubt both phones are good looking physically and GUI wise. And the X10 suit my taste more.
However you have to admit the animation on the phone is just questionable. There are noticeable minor lags. The most obvious is when you hold your thumb on the home screen to change wallpapers, the window jerks open. Such a simple animation and yet it cant be done nicely on a 1ghz cpu. Hence I dare to say the desire does a better job at this. The animations are so fluid its almost on par with the iphone. You might say i'm being picky, i admit that, thats prob because my expectation was even more higher than yours.
Look nocturnal, both phones have good and bad points, it all depends on what features both phones offer matter to you most, and what are the bad points you can ignore. I'm a pessimist, I like my things by accepting their cons. Im also a X1 user as I mentioned in your earlier thread. Upgrading from that piece of junk to X10 is definitely a huge leap. I maybe complaining about the smallest details i can find on X10, but that does not mean Im not happy with the phone. I know iphone is the only phone(according to my experience) that can do the most fluid GUI, (HTC second) but can i live with no-multitasking, apple being a control freak etc etc? No
I'd give X10 a 8/10, X1 a 2/10.
Pass
I have only purchased SE phones for the past seven years. My last three were the p900a, p910i, and currently I own the x1i. Prior to SE I only purchased Motorola. When the X10 came out I decided to purchase but also wanted to wait to see want x10 owners were saying. I have been waiting, and waiting, and waiting for enough positives to go ahead a take the x10 plunge. I have learned the hard way that SE gets great hardware out there and is slow to get the software side up and running appropriately, but that is not a deal breaker by itself.
After waiting for several issues to be resolved before purchasing and reading the volume of issues, I have finally decided to give the x10 a pass all together. No, I will wait for the issues facing the x10 to be worked out in the next SE. Like maybe the GX1! That will be sweet when/if it arrives to market.
The reason I have decided to wait: Unlike the p900, p910, and x1, the x10's issues are too involved with the reasons I would buy this ppc.
1) I prefer a hard keyboard and the with the issues facing the on-screen keyboard, the rest of the phone would really have to be superstar to over come this issue for me. Not a deal breaker by itself.
2) Timescape lags, contact photo not clean, issues with google email and facebook functionality, plus doesn't sync'n well and, lack of thoughtfulness with the controls.
3) Battery life is not optimised for the X10's performance. Not a deal breaker
4) Flash 10.1 not released yet and it is not yet known what issues will arise with working on the X10. Current flash players isn't really a proper flash player and video hangs at 50% complete. Issue for me
5) Running 1.6 and given SE track record the phone will get one up date to possibly the 2.1 in NOVEMBER. And, after that x10 owners will be on their own. Plus spring will be the launch of SE's next product. For me this is the biggest issue.
6) Suspicious that the screen protector that is included and shipped attached is really covering up a more serious issue with the actual screen itself. I do not see this as SE being thoughtful. Other wise why not just put it in the box and let the user decide? Some markets even got two screen protectors. One attached and second one to attach at a later time. It smells an awful lot like a screen manufacturing problem to me. Time will tell. But still an issue for me.
These are just a few off the top of my head. None are really deal breakers by themselves, and I know some will be addressed in June with an update and the others will be fixed in November. But why so long? Way too long if SE expects to keep me as a continued long term customers who always buys their flagship products. I also know that some will never be fixed. I would rather wait for the X20 with it's improvements and fixes to the issues facing the X10. Because I know there will not be enough changes to justify trading up from the X10 to the X20 should I buy now. I made that mistake with jumping from the p900 to the p910.
Here is what I would like to see SE and Google under the same roof. This would truly be an international success story. Ericsson's connectivity, Sony's ground breaking portable hardware, Googles OS, and purchase a forth company (purely software) to bring the apps into the 21st century. SE needs to buy a major software developer right now. SE's issues are always related to software and it that take too frick'n long to fix, if they get fixed at all. And, if you decide to get the fix yourself you void your warranty and can't get auto updates any more. Insane!
So unless something seriously ground breaking happens with this X10 I will hold on to my X1 a bit longer.

Insane!
So unless something seriously ground breaking happens with this X10 I will hold on to my X1 a bit longer.

you said it all
fm1776, none of those are issues to me especially no. 2 which I completely disagree with, no. 3 is also not the case with my phone, and the Android 1.6 being upgraded late this year ignores the fact that SE allows you to do the same and more that any Nexus 2.1 phone can do. Certainly a hard keyboard, if that is what you require, makes the x10 not the right phone for you. I am kind of shocked that you had the x1 but have passed on the x10 though, it is night and day between these phones, a lightyear leap, really.
the X10 reminds me a lot of the PS3. when the PS3 came out, it was dissed left and right. fans lost faith.
look what happened now? PS3 is killing it. and it too had to get firmware updates. and after some major updates, it was rockin'
i feel almost the same about the X10 as i did when i purchased a PS3 and my friends clowned me for it. now, it's not a laughing matter.
X10 IS getting 2.1 and that is a fact (for now) and i think if SE gives us what we want, it will be a win-win sooner or later.
so far the phone is a let down for me personally.
i don't hate it. patience and time will tell about how i feel about the phone when it's all said and done.
but as a phone, it doesn't do the 'phone' particularly well at this stage. low call volumes, along with a vibration that you can't really feel and a battery life that you can not really depend on is something really bugs me.
Hello XDA,
I'm not really sure if such a thread is allowed, but I'll give it a shot anyway (if it ain't, lock it please).
I was almost ready to get an X10, when a friend told me he is running Android on his iphone.
So I'm like:
X10: 4" screen (NO MULTITOUCH FFS)
Android (1.6 FAIL, and it can almost run normally on an iphone and 2.1 later on ??? why the hell not 2.2 ?!)
1GHz Processor (hell yeah!!, that's a huge plus for the X10) <--- EDIT: THIS IS NOT IRONIC !
8MP camera is win win
iPhone:
3.5" screen (obviously smaller than X10's)
iPhone OS seems really good (plus it can run Android....almost)
CPU is worse than X10's
HUGE amount of apps ('specially when you jb it)
So please give me some replies about my thoughts and feel free to add something.
Thanks in advance!

If multitouch is everything for you. then buy a ****ing iPhone, geeze..
The screen on the x10, is bigger and more bright than the iPhone's. The screen does also have a higher resolution as well, as it being bigger.
Why don't people stop ****ing crying about it having version 1,6? jesus.. Buy an iPhone then! Or a Nexus one!(It will get version 2,2 this week).
You seem kind of ironic when it comes to the cpu, of the x10...
In my opinion, is the x10 better than the current iPhone(s).
The only thing that I do like better when it comes to the iPhone, is the games on the iPhone's application store.
edit: Neither do I like the design on the iPhone that well. They do have almost the same design on all theyre phones. the exeptions are 2g and 4g. 3gs and 3g looks exactly the same. the front of the phone is basically the same on all the iPod touch's and iPhones.
Personally I don't care about multitouch. So for me the only thing better in a iPhone is that it's tougher and feel more solid but only because it don't have a removable back cover and that come with a price. You can't change an iPhone 16 gb xd card for a 32 gb or have many xd card and change them as you like. You can't change the battery and I don't like the way to put the sim card in. I know a lot of peoples with iphone and i'm the only one with a x10. For me x10 is way better than a iPhone.

You ask for serious replies, then you say things like "FFS" and "FAIL!!!!"
Go away, troll.
As you yourself pointed out that X10 has better hardware in every aspect, so then the only remaining thing is the software aspect of the phone. Well when I bought this phone I was pretty sure that we will be able to root it pretty soon, quite unfortunately though, it turns out to be not true. Well I am pretty sure SE is noticing the frustration among us (some of us are even thinking of selling this phone). I hope pretty soon we will have the flashing tool we need for rooting.
After rooting, the remaining comparision lies between Android and iphone UI. Well that's another topic entirely, the way Android apps are growing, I am pretty sure we will catch up to iphone by the end of this year. And UI wise, well..... I haven't seen their OS 4 yet. I am pretty sure it's great, but if not Android 2.2 then 2.3 will beat it , yep I am pretty sure about that.
Dear sekibun,
This is my first post in this forum.
I used Iphone for almost 6 months and I was so happy with it. However, on my past days I used only SonyEricsson mobiles starting from P Series (P900i then P910i then P990i then P1i). When I heard that SE going to release X10i with android OS, I immediately sold my Iphone and I bought X10i. To be honest with you. I am more than happy with X10i. It is definitely better than Iphone in the following aspect:-
• SIZE, LOOK AND DISPLAY. -- WITHOUT ANY DEBATE --
• CAMERA. -- WITHOUT ANY DEBATE --
• Faster GPS and better Bluetooth.
• Timescape/Mediascape UI build-in app which make your phone alive. Plus all my friends they get impressed when I show them.
• Smoother and faster internet browser.
I noticed that a bit X10i is slower than Iphone, However, it does not get slower even than if you run 25 applications in the background plus you are browsing internet and listening to wireless fm.
You don’t have to agree with me. But was my experience when I switch from iPhone 3GS to Xperia X10 .
the only good thing about iphones , that they never dies ,even the first released iphone still gets updates till now
Hardware on paper looks nice. But thw software on thy x10 doesn't take advantage of the phone. I would wait for root or 2.1 update if I were you.

I've used both the 3gs and the x10. The x10's screen is gorgeous compared to the iPhone's as the pixel density and the size is greatly improved. Web browsing wise, the x10 is also about twice as fast at rendering websites. Now usability wise, the x10 belongs in the gutter of smart phones. Selecting small links in the browser is a huge pain and a lot of times when you mean to scroll in the browser the phone will open a link instead. The music player is beyond incoherency and just lacks all sorts of functionality while the iPhone uses the true and tried iPod format. Application wise the Android lags behind and x10 is even worse as a lot of apps do not support the 1.6 system. Without root, the x10 is even less customizable compared to a jailbroken iPhone. In conclusion, the x10 have a supierior hardware but it does not have the software needed to even make the everyday usage not frustrating -_- the iPhone is not as powerful, but it just works.
almaqdad, lifeflayer (and the others) ty for your answers.
first of all, i'm not ironic towards the x10's hardware.
don't know what to write lol.
i think i'm leaning towards the x10, but still not 100% sure.
waiting for more replies,
thanks !

No, it doesn't. The first iPhone will not be getting the 4.0 update. The iPhone 3G will not be receiving multitasking, or a few of the other new features of the update.
Same for the iPod touch.
Only the new models will get the full updates.
The Problem of the iPhone is the lack of Multitasking! I have both here an Iphone and an X10. The iPhone doesnt make me happy.
Simple expample. I'm on icq and receive an sms. To read the sms i must close icq (it doesn't stay in the background) and so i loose the icq messages sent in the meanwhile.
This is the problem with everything. it's solved through push notifications, but that has nothing to do with multitasking and won't work in icq for example, because if you simply closes the program icq server thinks you're still online and all messages send in this time are sent to /dev/null ^^
Second problem is that apple always wants you to use iTunes. You can't simply copy songs etc. off the phone (only the one that you buyed in iTunes). You're also not allowed to send songs through Blutooth to friends etc.
The iPhone OS seems to be pretty smart and like apple users say "snappy", BUT use it for a while and you see all the limitations of this OS (even with Jailbreak). If you are okay with this the iPhone is a good choice. If not choose an Android phone.
The only point which is a PRO an iPhone is multitouch, but I never needed it till now.
For me the X10 is much better than the iPhone.
So choose on of your friend and play with his iPhone for a couple of hours and you will see if its good for you or not.

Here is my 2 cents.
iPhone is limited by its hardware.
X10 is limited by its software.
In the long run, X10 will only go as far as the developers at SE make it go. So potentially, it could be one of the best Android phones on the market.
This is where it won't even compete with the iPhone.
iPhone is already proven to be a success. It's OS is super good and smooth. X10's OS is laggy and basically cripples the phone with its limitations.
Technology should be here and now. You want to have everything now, not later. And the problem is that the wait doesn't give what the end-users what they want - the current best thing.
So is the iPhone better than X10? Right now it is. And when iPhone 4g comes out, X10 would be eating the dust from Apple and other Android phones.

Thank you for your answers once again !
One question though; isn't the new update coming to the iphone providing multitasking ('cause this really is a big problem). If I finally pick the iphone, I'm getting the 3gs, so I'll be able to get the latest version of the OS right ?
Also, what arcticreaver said; I want (we all do) my features here and now !
From what I read on the forums, we are not even sure if the X10 will ever be root-able.
Ahh and by the way, do we know when iphone 4g or w/e it's called is coming out ?
~sekibun
Think about that and google for "Fast App Switch" on Iphone OS4.0
There is NO MULTITASKING in Os 4.0.
It's similar to Android but not so good. The OS 3.0 frezzes the Apps and send them so background (similar to Android) if you wanna use them they are waken up. BUT you can't let active apps in background, this will not be possible even with OS4.0, Apple only allows 2 more apps for real multitasking. There are still the same problems with OS4.0 than before. Only the apps start faster because they are frozen in background.
ICQ e.g. still won't work in background.
-Bin4ry
What's with all the bashing of the x10s software? It has some little lags sometimes but every smartphone has these kinds of lags. My jb iPhone was kinda slow and the browser crashed when surfing complex websites due RAM limitations. The iPhone is good for using as a mobile music and videoplayer. An Android device is good for nearly everything.
The x10 is not that bad with the 1.6 Android os. Multitouch is overrated. The browser experience is great. It's no problem for me to click the smart links on forums like xda. It was a pain in the ass with iPhone and hd2.
If you get an iPhone 3gs now you also could use the x10. The x10 maybe has some little limitations with Android 1.6 but the 3gs lacks hardware...

Now and Future
I have both of devices compared (Iphone and X10).
The size of both are the same, visible screen is juste larger than Iphone.
Speed :
User Interface speed : Iphone is faster and smoother
Web Speed : Android Web Browser is faster, but less reliable than Iphone,
but i think it will be better with Android 2.2
Applications : look the same, but X10 is more beatyfull
Application Store :
the Iphone AppStore is beter, more beautyfull and more reliable.
Install and Uninstall is more userfriendly on Iphone (i don't know how to uninstall on Android)
X10 Specific :
Camera (Photos) : One word ... Beatyfulll !!!! It quality is nearly my APN
Sony N1 (8.1 Mp too)...
->Iphone's Camera is very poor !!!
Videos : Beautyfull too !!! Actualy with 800x480/30is... Nearly a Midle
quality Numeric Camescope... And Sony Promess a 720p
Reacording with the next update Android 2.1...
->CyCirder is good, X10 is so far better..
Sound : Beauty full too... Realy Better than Iphone... but actualy not so
userfriendly like iPhone... Headset is very good quality
->Iphone's sound is good, but X10 is so far better...
I'm realy wait someone find a solution to be root on this device !!! Or hope to have the lastest Update (2.2)...
I don’t understand why people making so much big deal with a small limitation that Xperia X10 have with android OS 1.6 which incomparable with big problem that Iphone does with multi-tasking.

Some applications are allowed to run in the background, like skype, or the messenger applications.
Other applications like games and such are not allowed, and are instead frozen as you said.
Atleast, this is how I understood the whole thing.
I am a Xperia X1 user and am looking for a good android phone, which I have narrowed down to a Desire or a SGS.
I really like the added benefits of the SGS (Better Screen, 8GB internal memory, HD Video), but cannot deny the fact that the UI on the Desire (Sense) is much better than the Samsung setup….
What are your opinions on the standard system?
The reason why I am asking here is that you all will generally have experience with Sense, which all of the custom ROMs for my xperia has been brilliant over the past 18months (kept it alive).
I notice that the SGS XDA portal, has a lot less posts than the HTC Desire forum, but I am hoping that this is due to the fact that the Desire has been out longer than the Samsung.
I am due to upgrade my phone in 10 days so need to figure out which way to go.
All opinions are welcome!
When I purchase this phone my thought was:
1. UI and software can be update and modified, hardwares are fixed.
2. Communities and 3rd party supports for this phone, which are great right now.
These are enough for me.

I've had an iPhone 3G and a 3GS. Sold the 3GS a month ago to buy the iPhone 4. Due to every shop being out of stock on these babys, I decided to give Android a chance.
I nearly bought the Xperia X10 but in some shop they had a Galaxy S Demo Unit. I grabbed it and fell in love with it. It's so light-weight compared to other smartphones!
When I went home with it, I read some footage about it on engadget, gizmodo, etc. I didn't know it was the strongest Android phone at this time. I was very surprised and even more in love!
The screen is a blast.
I was in the same situation, though I was coming from a WinMo handset. I'm so happy with my choice, I know a few nexus one and desire owners who are now wanting a SCS - which says a lot.
My last phone was an HD2 with WinMo 6.5.5 wich have a wunderful community (Android development very fast).
But the Samsung i9000 is a nice Phone, with a wunderful screen, and 720p videoplayback and recording. And of corse, Android.
(Faster than HD2 [thanks Android], more Apps, 720p rec/play, etc...)
Thanks very much for the feedback guys... its good to get opionions of Win Mo users switching, as most reviews I have read on the internet is based on prev Iphone users (who's opinions I do not value).
Are you guys mostly using the stock SGS software, or running custom roms?

Do you prefer this phone to your HD2? The HD2 was a great phone (as was the TyTn II)!
I am using factory's rom with a little bit of addition: rooting + auto killer to manage memories.
From an Omnia i900 winmo. 6.5.5 user, I have no lags problem on this phone.
Well, how about the opinion of a user switching between iPhone 3GS, Symbian s60v3 and v5, WinMo6, 6.1, and 6.5 and Android 1.5, 1.6, and 2.1 phones, in order to find my perfect suite?!? Actually my last/previous phone was Vivaz PRO
It is really the best phone that i laid my hands on up to now.
Hardware-wise, unbelievable super AMOLED multi-touch screen, fantastic HD video camera, super-fast CPU, a lot of RAM, 8GB internal memory and VERY VERY light! (OK, I miss the LED flash, but I can live with that).
Software-wise, I believe, after a lot of experience with multiple OSs, that Android is the future (at least for the next couple of years). Very smooth OS, open to do everything you wish (root, custom firmware, install pirate soft, etc) easily, and VERY FAST GROWING/UPDATING (compared with WinMo and symbian, that feel a bit ancient by now).
Go for it bro! You wont regret!
Just sold mine galaxy s on ebay.. and for a very good price I am so happy now
If you are like me and use gps navigation a lot, simply run away from this phone.
I am now back to my HD2 (so happy I did not sell it). No navigation software can compare with tom tom.
All in all galaxy s has:
Superb screen:
HD video recording
And that is about it….
The gps is rubbish, don’t listen to the people telling you that they fixed it…
All “fixes” are just to provide fast network location fix (which in most cases is inaccurate)
With my HD2 it does not matter how cloudy it is, and how tall are the buildings around me,
I have GPS fix in 3-5sec and I MEAN GPS FIX, not network location fix.
SO I KNOW EXACTLY WHERE I AM.
2 days ago I was in central London and tried to find the closest tesco with google maps…
After 5min I just gave up… galaxy s simply could not do it
With HD2 things like that takes 10 to 20 sec (including typing tesco in the search bar)
I am also very disappointed with the android OS,
This thing does not even support external gps… we had that in winmo 10 years ago…
It has all sorts of problems, for example application starting on the background (consuming data) and there is simply no way for the user to control that.
One more thing the internal memory card is very very very slow and this slows down the devise a lot. Sure people will tell you about the sd card fix but REALLYYYY… should I start fixing the Samsung rubbish? No thanks, will stay away from Samsung and android for another 2 years (at least)
same here i always purchase my smartphones by the hardware spec, and the amount of Forums/groups available for it.
unfortunately the HTC Athena was flawed, the device itself is amazingly great, howerver support for it was low.
SGS i9000 on the other hand has a very lively group just like HTC Desire

mitko76 Good luck doing anything with GPS in central London...Buildings have this horrible side effect on ALL GPS systems.
Google maps is easily the best Search for phone, but not the greatest GPS, since is need a Connection to work if you deviate from the rout too much.
I've had this phone for w eek now and it is a great phone, there are a few niggles in the software, but believe me way less than stock windows mobile 6.5.
The screen isn;t as crisp as people would have you believe, White text on a dark background gives you a red effect around text and text Isn;t smooth, no where near the Iphone 4 IMO, however the contrast and colours are superb.
Give it a go if your on contract you have 7 days to return it.

As a x1 user who has just upgraded to a Galaxy S a week past i can say that it is definetly worth it.
I did own a Desire for a day when i got it on contract but i didn't get coverage for the network in my area.
I find the Galaxy S to be a nicer looking phone, screen looks a lot brighter and better. Sound quality from the speaker is better and the UI also seems much faster.
It's a great phone, no questions asked, but you have to realize that it needs some work (like the fixes and all) and customization.
I'm using the imfamous JF3 stock rom and i do notice some lags and battery drain (but I use it very heavily, frequent syncs and updates, tons of widgets and all that) so i'm gonna switch over to the better ones.
I come from the Omnia II wich was a great phone but very poorly supported by samsung and the community. This isn't the case at all for the SGS. I used to have sense on my device, big fan of sense, but i like the SGS homescreen as well with the different pannels, really like it. Touchwizz is sort of a love/hate relationship
I'm loving android so far, even though i don't understand everything, i'm sure i could enhance my phone a lot.
hope this helps

Logicalstep, that is what I am trying to explain .. I DO NOT NEED “Good Luck” when using my hd2’s gps in central London, it simply work. I work in central London so trust me, I know what I am talking about.
If you are coming from a phone with poor gps I can understand your point, but hd2 simply has a proper gps unit in it and it is working no matter where I am. With HD2 I can even get gps lock in the train (10 sec), tried this with galaxy s and guess what... it FAILED (after 10min).
You can keep convincing yourself that the buildings are high, the sky is cloudy or God knows what ..
But the simple truth is the gps is rubbish.
Keep waiting for the NEXT firmware to fix the issues, and when it failed keep waiting for the next one and so on....
Mitko please do us a favour and leave the forum, we know that you sold your Galaxy S, and frankly its quite boring to see you posting on every thread and preaching slander. The GPS does take a short while to position (about 30-40 secs) but after that it works perfectly for me. I have used it on several occasions when lost in central London.
Since last December I've owned the following handsets: N900, HD2, Desire, X10, Galaxy S.
Of all of these the Galaxy S is my favorite, followed very closely by the HD2.

Coming from you that is high praise indeed.
Loving my SGS, no way am I going back to Symbian.
On my side I am coming from winmo6.5 and then iphone3GS
if i had an advice to give you in order to choose between the desire and the samsung it would be to know that :
* you won't have HTC sense on samsung ... I mean really nothing comparable.
* there is almost no button on the samsung .No trackball ( painfull for selection) no LED ... and it's quite annoying some time
Yes when I compare both with my colleague , mine has a better screen ( bigger , brighter) but it will worth it if you watch a lot of video or look at a lot of picture. If it's just to have more beautifull icon ... you will forget it looks better after few weeks
I am still a little bit uncertain about the GPS ... I need to do more tests and to check the settings I could enhance but it can't be compared to my TomTom ( on both winmo and iphone)
Hopefully there will be soon a real fix for the slowness of the SD card ... hopefully ...
Thanks guys, this is brilliant information!
I used the phone briefly in a phone shop yesterday, and I have to say that it looks very impressive! Especially compared to my x1 running Windows 6.5.3. The only first negative impression that I had was how cheap and flimsy the back cover was...but I hey, I know no phone will be perfect.
When my contract is up next week, and I am going to go for the SGS and as Logicalstep has commented I have 7 days to return it if unhappy.
I really appreciate the feedback, as it has made me allot more comfortable with going for the SGS.

I'm sure you will enjoy it
And honestly i agree about the cheap looking back but honestly that's why it is so light and you forget about this quickly.
Especially if you add a case ( you have some very thin one)
Just switched to a Samsung Galaxy S. My conclusion:
- Exchange Sync and Android sucks, while email is ok, calendar sync is buggy
- Battery!!! I got 2-3 days with my Xperia and 2/3 day (LESS THAN ONE) on the SGS
- The Xperia can't do all the fancy android stuff. The SGS can't either because the battery is empty ...
- Xperia is robust! Hard to damage!
- WiMo may not be fast, but android also laggs sometimes
- WiMo is more intuitive for me (as a PC user)
Xperia X1 sure is a great phone, I enjoy mine very much. However, if I could have Xperia's guts in my Universal....
I abolutely agree. There aren't many phones out there I would trade for my X1. Maybe the LG Expo but it's hardly available. The HD 2 surely is a great phone too but without a hw keyboard it disqualifies itself for me.
Im still very pleased to realise day and day again how much can be accomplished with the X1. Especially when you take into consideration that the Xperia X1 have been sold for almost 2 years now.
i love my xperia
and if you want all the fancy android stuff, well then wait a while, android is making great progress!
best of both worlds if you ask me!
I loved my Xperia as well (if it weren't for my constant flex ribbon issue I would still love it). I gotta say the FROYO port to the X1 worked extremely well, even used turn by turn navigation with no problems at all. Sad that HTC Sense version of the Xperia is no longer continued. Hint, hint Jonny4911 I definitely like having multiple operating systems on the phone in addition to having a cool wow form factor of the Xperia. While it was still working, people would still ask me "what phone is that?!"
I think so.....
Two words that really prevent this phone from being the best I've owned and cannot be ignored in my opinion:
Quality issues
Definitely X1 earned to be one of the best Smarties ever.
Honestly I still keep this if something irreversible will happen to my X2.
X2 could be actually X1 improved, but the software mess they made prevented this.
Pity.
The thing is I really admire SE smartphone concepts.
Hopefully WP7 device will be also great....
That's interesting cos I was actually thinking I should go for the Galaxy S. I still love my Xperia and only yesterday a very pretty girl asked me what it was
Hehe, it even gets you chicks!!!
I love my XPERIA X1 TOO (than my X2 and Milestone). Besides of X1's most ellegance mode of my other phones, because it is a present from my dad.
X2 really has a big trouble in its software. It often get lag after a phone call. Why SE make a downgrade of X1 Gosh?!?
Because the review and commercial in my country rate Galaxy S as 4.5 stars , I plan to replace my buggy Milestone to Galaxy S this morning but it's not available yet till next two weeks in my town (In Indonesia, Galaxy S is just about to b launched).

Happened to me occasionally too. It was great while it lasted. I used that phone until it literally fell apart.
I'm currently using the captivate (ATT galaxy S). It's a good upgrade imo. Not quite as elegant but it has impressed just as many people (including me) as my xperia did.
Sent from my SAMSUNG-SGH-I897 using XDA App
I love to see how people amazed when they see my X1 with Android in it haha.. and they really loved it.. Though they still prefer the smooth scrolling of Iphone.. My phone beats that with multi-user interface
WM 6.1, 6.5, HTC Sense, PointUI roms are already that much.. Almost every few days I'll change my rom LOL.. Let's hope Android sets it foot into becoming a rom for our X1

Sorry, off topic, but what's the state of the X2 firmware mess? Did they ever iron things out?
x1 is great phone ever.. it have video call other phone xperia have no video phone and its still the best for me
I've been using this phone almost a year now and all the things i need to a person to be mobility and flexible is with this phone. I can used it with my work, traveling, exercise, gaming and even sound tripping. As of now, i haven't found any phone that could replace it.

Totally agree with you man. It's frustrating that with such a great phone we have to be hit hard by quality issues. From cracks to keyboard problems to ribbon issues. It's a shame really.
SE could have almost made a near perfect phone, but they washed it down the drain with quality issues. They hit it spot on with the form factor, the design (sexiest phone I've seen, even till today), the hardware buttons (on which modern phone can you find this amount of hardware buttons even if you exclude the keyboard?), the collaboration with HTC, the OS (WM is still great and will still be great for years to come).
So many thing went so right, but just 1 issue flushed it down the drain. Sigh.
on the middle of 2011 some one wanted to say that he likes and loves his X1 still but will be 100% satisfied if it's more slim!!
The X1 hardware is great, but WinMo really does suck, the only thing it has over iOS and Android is an offline version of Garmin gps software.
I just got an Evo 3D and so far I'm much happier with it than I was with the Xperia for the past year.
the x1 is a greatphone, the standard software wm 6.1 sucks a little bit but there is so much software to tune it up.

hello ppl,
I currently have a X10 but I was wondering about to change my device soon for a Galaxy S or for Motorola Droid 2 GLOBAL.
I would like to hear some of you, especially now that the X10 will be getting Froyo and Multitouch Officialy by the next year, that was one of the major drawback of the phone.
Is this trade fair?
Lenghty... Go make some coffee.
Ok dig this, I had the Captivate for 3 weeks. The short answer is I returned it because it kept turning off. Google Galaxy S Random Shut Down.
Now briefly, all I know about the Droid phones is that same as the iPhone, If you throw a rock in any direction you'll probably hit an accessory for it.. Man they got the whole 9 yards... From Moto Docks to OtterBox (Defender) .
Captivate Pros
Man that screen... NO FOR REAL! That screen is just amazing, And it's a Corning registered Gorilla Glass device. Go google that if you want to.
The Captivate has the most powerful botton in the known universe " Hearing Adaptive" or something like that. It's a huge boost for in coming call volume. Half way between low speaker phone volume and high ear piece volume. And this way you're not picking up everything in the mic like you would if you used Speaker Phone for the volume hike.
The two main cons that make me not miss it.
Turning off ... C'mon really ???
And those damn stock android Menu,Home,Back and Search buttons. I kept hitting Search by accident to the point of moderate frustration. I'm 5' 9" and weigh 157 pounds... I do not have sausage fingers.
Ok let's talk Pinch Zoom. Really I don't miss it. The Magnification buttons we X10 users have seems like a Button to Zipper comparison. We both can do the same thing just in a different way.
X10 pros .... And this one is worth at least 3 Pro spots of value to me.
The 3 phisical button... dear God sweet Jesus, Thank you for those
The 3 things I wish I could change about the X10
In Call Volume . I have had my hearing tested and I picked up zero decibels on my right and slightly worse on my left. It ain't me man, It's the phone. SPEAK UP [email protected]#$%^& !
Accessories.
There ain't none... Like for real. To find an X10 specific anything you have to hire a Sherpa and climb a damn mountain and then when you get there you're only going to find the OtterBox Commuter and Impact, We didn't even get the Defender
The Camera. 8mp of steaming ... Vignette,Camera 360 or stock, I can't take a clear bright picture to save my own life. ( Please don't derail this thread into a Camera Tips and Tricks, Read those and done that)
So after all this, I have run thru The HTC Aria (Tiny Toy), The Samsung Captivate and then finally the X10.
I'm keeping the X10 because out of all the love hate things you may find from one phone to the other this device has the most " I can live with" and the least " I hate" things.
It's a phone, It's not going to bring you true happiness. It's just gonna make calls and keep you interested in between.
Edit-
Battery! The Samsung Captivate needs to be charged everyday... Really.. Everyday and sometime through out the day. It's that screen I think. Imagine those Donkeys at the Grand Canyon. Now imagine them carrying Fat Sweaty Betty from Wisconsin. The battery is doing the best it can given the load it has to carry.
My X10 however could go a day or two between charges. And I use it on full brightness all the time.
oh nice answer, I didn't know about the battery life of the Galaxy S, I know about the lag and GPS issues.
Also the Galaxy S doesn't have a camera flash.
On the other side
the Androids from motorola all of them have the best battery life amongst the android family device and also has Dual LED flash but the screen is TFT not AMOLED like Galaxy S
EDIT:
For what I have been reading, the battery life on droid 2 GLOBAL is very bad, like 5 hours a day with normal use, that is very bad compared to the X10 with 2.1 that lasts more than a day.
I think the X10 with 2.1 upgrade has the better battery life compared to other android phones, even motorola's phones

well considered, well thought out answer. nicely done!
Just my 2 cents. I have the Xperia X10a Rogers and the Captivate AT&T (thanks to amazon.com's 1 cent sale).
Having lived with the Captivate for a couple of weeks, I won't return back to using the Xperia. For a long time, I thought it was AT&T that was providing me with crappy voice calls. Obviously, quiet and lots of hiss noise. The Captivate? Crystar clear all the time. Sorry At&t, I thought it was your fault. Now, I know it is the Xperia.
So far, I have not experienced the issues faced by other Captivate owners. Maybe the latest software upgrade fixed them.
But I'll tell you the main reason why I'll continue using the Captivate: Easy rooting and custom recovery (so far, I don't think the Xperia cooks have been able to create a custom recovery for the X10). Also, Google voice direct phone calls work on the Captivate. For some reason, it stopped working on the Xperia after SE upgraded the software to 2.1.
yeah, the X10 has a bad phone speaker and the bootloader still hasn't been cracked , and I would love to install another kernel on the X10 because Im looking forward to reverse tethering my phone so I could use my laptop internet
routed to the android phone via USB because I don't have an unlimited data plan.
Hi. This will also be long. LOL.
I own both an X10 and a Galaxy S. To summarize, I had the least frustration with my X10 than with my Galaxy S. Yep, I have two. Both unlocked. That's how things work in the Philippines. You would want to have a separate phone for work and play (personal stuff--like family and friends as our carriers here charge weirdly for their services).
I got my x10 first and I was very happy--lags were negligible and 2.1 really made it zippier. Twas my first Android and was on 1.6 and got updated to 2.1 like 3 days after I got it. Then my contract retention with the other carrier came up two weeks after and I picked up a Galaxy S. Initially, my Galaxy S was on 2.1 and it was OK save for some negligible lags but after a 2.2 upgrade, it kept freezing and dying, and Swype won't even let me write anything sensible. I was so frustrated to the point that I wanted to flush it down the toilet, if it wasn't so pricey. Then I applied a lag fix and it went all zippy and I'm happy with it.
Now for some real comparison
Galaxy S over X10
- faster operation (after the lag fix)
- way way better S-AMOLED screen, perfect for long movies
- pre-loaded apps like English Dictionary, Vlingo, Office Editor, File and Task Manager
- Multitouch (though the x10 will get one by March 31 2011--latest)
- cool slide out usb hatch
- front facing camera
- access to froyo (2.2)
- FM radio (not true for the captivate)
- in my case longer operating time than the x10, my x10 drinks juice
- notification pull down has remote control to wifi and others
- more possible to get updated to 2.3
- very light and easy to pocket
- better voice calls with or without headset
X10 over Galaxy S
- more eloquent UI / software tweaks (better animations, more premium feel)
- a lot better and stand out body design (IMO)
- three hardware buttons
- better 8MP camera
- better continuous autofocus (after 2.1)
- I love timescape over buddies online (samsung's own social media widget)
- more convenient location of lanyard eye (lanyards are important to me because I used to drop phones often)
- feels heavier and feels greater on hand thanks to the curves
- best sound (music, I mean) reproduction (IMO)
Galaxy Cons
- Soft keys (back button, and home if you are on captivate/vibrant) can take you out of what you are doing
- Less reliable operation due to lags and soft key back button issues
- Looks cheap, uninspired design
- TouchWiz UI sucks big time
- clunky messaging and contacts interface--shows less information at once due to big font sizes, probably useful for older people
- can't use samsung widgets when using launcher pro
- buggy because it's Samsung!
- low user interface quality check--you might be surprised to find poorly constructed and grammatically incorrect sentences on the Galaxy S's UI, thank God by 2.2 most have vanished
- Samsung Kies (syncing software) sucks
X10 Cons
- plastic usb flap cover
- poor photolight does not help night shots, in fact blinds people you are taking pictures of
- kind of laggy due to timescape, but I can live with this
- mediascape is kind of old-world and hard to use, best use poweramp / winamp
- pre-loaded apps don't add much value
- stuck at 2.1 for the foreseeable future, probably forever
- does not have much faster ROMS available due to the bootloader not being cracked yet
- poor voice calls experience until you wear a headset
So mostly X10 wins over the Galaxy S on the hardware design bits and on the custom UI bits. Galaxy S, however, is overall better in performance after the lag fix. But if you are too scared to do it, you will be stuck with a laggy and freezing FROYO phone. It might even die on you. It's all a matter of finding what you can live with and without and then picking that one. I haven't had any MOTOROLA ANDROID phone, but DROID 2 Global sounds nice, but it's bound to be heavier. Good luck on the choosing. As for me, I'm stuck to these 2 for two years. LOL.

are you running WINDOWS 7 or MAC? If so you can reverse tether. MAC supports it natively, I heard, while Windows 7 needs Connectify installed. Just enable your PC's wifi and it shares your 3G internet.

i own a x10i n my dad have a tmobile vibrant...
-all i can say is vibrant is fast, so fast, very fast compare to my x10i... my x10i lags badly... it takes about 15 sec to start up whatsapp from fresh start...
-the super AMOLED on vibrant is juz awesome... da color is so much better than my x10. the x10 color seems more like wash out... x10 itself plays very nice video, but compare with vibrant, x10 is juz that bad...
-even my x10 seems so crappy against the vibrant i still love it. why? because the slick design and is white... i dont like the outlook of vibrant cause it look so much like an iphone 2 or 3G...(im an iphone hater)
i wish my x10 will have the processor and same amount of RAM as vibrant and of cause the super AMOLED is very nice
on specs, the x10 seems like a real competitor to the galaxy s. every little part in the galaxy s is just a little bit better than the x10. but it does come at a price. big advantages the galaxy s has are things like froyo and multitouch. and though its coupled with a gorilla glass amoled screen and hdmi out, i consider thouse a bit behind the scenes. the x10 has a much better camera and a much lower price tag. the performance is alot better on the galaxy s and its a better out of box experience. because of its price, if the x10 had a newer version of android and multitouch, it would be a no brainer. but until then, if you havent bought either, id say save up a little bit more money and buy the galaxy s.
i would like to stress a few points. multitouch... ive never seen an android 2.1 device with a capacitive screen not do multitouch until now. even the g1 got mutitouch. dont you dare try to justify using the volume buttons to zoom. multitouch is more than just zooming, and its not good at that either. you know how long it takes to zoom in an 8.1mp image by tapping in one level over and over? when it comes to replacement android interfaces, many people will agree with me, im not a fan of either the galaxy s or x10's ui's. sonys timescape might take the cake for the most useless one ive ever seen though. only one company, htc, has really been sucessfull at creating a replacement interface. so if your name is not htc, dont think you can do better than google. gingerbread has been out for a week now, its really sad to see devices still running android 1.6 or 2.1. with the nexus s being a gingerbread phone, i can see other galaxy s phones getting an update right after its launch. sony really needs to atleast try for 2.2.

hi folks,
maybe i looked over it, but has anyone here ever tried to update a galaxy s.
i did and it's terrible!! samsung kies is like the worst piece of software ever!
and i wondered if anyone ever dropped a samsung galaxy s from normal standing height.
and dropped it so that its dropped flat on a hard(rock) floor.
because i have heard multiple stories about amoled screens falling (not so hard)
and totally shattering across the screen. i see you saying that x10 has TFT but i specially chose an x10 because of the TFT screen.
the screen of the galaxy is amazing though i must say, and i know samsung is always pretty decent in hardware. software=no but hey android is from google so no worries there.
i'd like to see some test of strength with amoled and non amoled

I know right, Samsung Kies suck big time. After I updated my SGS from Eclair to Froyo, the lagginess of Samsung knew no end. I had to install a lagfix then it was all OK. Question is, why can't Samsung have that out of the box since the problem has been popularly pointed out and not all users, I suppose, knows there would be such a fix.

multitouch is more than just zooming, and its not good at that either. you know how long it takes to zoom in an 8.1mp image by tapping in one level over and over? when it comes to replacement android interfaces, many people will agree with me, im not a fan of either the galaxy s or x10's ui's. sonys timescape might take the cake for the most useless one ive ever seen though. only one company, htc, has really been sucessfull at creating a replacement interface. so if your name is not htc, dont think you can do better than google. gingerbread has been out for a week now, its really sad to see devices still running android 1.6 or 2.1. with the nexus s being a gingerbread phone, i can see other galaxy s phones getting an update right after its launch. sony really needs to atleast try for 2.2.

Timescape is an app not a replacement interface. The general UI overlay on the X10 is much better than the Galaxy S in so many ways. Let's compare the built-in messaging app, for instance of these two phones. At one glance, you get more info on the x10 than on the Galaxy S due to the FWVGA resolution on the X10. Galaxy S also uses enormous fonts and pointless speech bubbles on their messaging app which results to less info being displayed at a time. And this is not just on the Messaging app. On almost everything Samsung-made, they just keep using enormous fonts which makes the phone feel low-res.
I do agree with your points on how sucky the zooming is on Mediascape. It is just not fast enough to justify the loss of MT. But on areas outside of that such as the web, no MT is not much of a dealbreaker. Generally what holds the phone down is the outdated OS, I agree. 2.1 is good and does a lot of stuffs, some even only present in 2.2 were added in by SE anyways, so you can excuse them a bit for that, but it's more of the power-efficiency and performance that you're after with every upgrade and it's a shame SE has no concrete plans for 2.2 or 2.3 on the X10 upto now. Had SE been up to date, SE owners would have been prouder.
P.S. on 16M S-AMOLED and 65k LCD, I don't see much difference. The X10, on proper LCD brightness is on par with S-AMOLED on normal lighting conditions. I find it weird though why at 16M colors, Samsung Galaxy S still dithers. I was expecting this on the X10, but I'm more than glad to see little to no dithering on it.
Hey, what about Droid 2 Global?
I see nothing about Droid 2 Global. By the way, it is the phone for CDMA and GSM networks both. And actually I don't remember any notes about Motorola family vs SE.
Returning to the topic, I have maybe a little politically incorrect point of view on the cell phone (and other technical stuff) design. It is about the culture. Not about "don't littering", but about engineering. Ericsson (and Sony Ericsson) has pretty long history that gave them experience. HTC, Samsung, etc are relatively young and most of their problems are rooted there. Look - overall satisfaction for X10 without the last technology bells and whistles like OLED or multitouch is higher, than hi-tech-packed rival's devices. Why? Because according to the experience, they realize, that it is impossible to be perfect and it is better to concentrate to ergonomics issues. The device should be easy-to-use, foolproof and hard-to-break. That can be understand through the long experience of analyzing how it works through the life of the device. Typical life of Samsung is around a year. I remember my friend changes around 5 or 6 phones (3 or 4 of them were Samsungs), when I used the same SE k790a. And it works fine for now. Another conclusion is to buy a flagship. Budget devices of any manufacturer always have issues. I know, all those galaxies are claimed to be top-models, flagships, bla-bla-bla. But I bet, some months of using reminds you my note about engineering experience.
So, for me, there is the only comparison - X10 vs Droid. And I don't see one. Sorry for my chauvinistic pigness.
the way i see it is
-if you want a keyboard go for the droid 2 global
-if you want an amazing screen then go for the samsung
-if you want to save money then keep the x10
i dont really see a point in upgrading to any other phone right now
