Android devices in coroporate environments

Hi,
I´m a recent user of an Android device with now the last Official Donut ROM.
As a mobile device it is performing very nice and I like the interface (and the whole concept) a lot. However for utilization in a corporate environment it is almost useless at least in my case. Let me explain:
In a common standard company an employee when it sits at his desk he/she:
- Starts is desktop/laptop PC
- Starts his mail client that in the vast majority of cases will be Microsoft Office Outllook client that either connects to a Microsoft Exchange mail Server or to any other kind of mail server (merak, etc.)
- Then he will access to his mails, to his contacts, to his calendar and to his tasks that all of them are stored locally in Outlook files. (Well, if the server is an Exchange server they can be stored only in the server itself). In the case of Exchange normally the connection forces to use and to install a certificate in the client.
- The he will open documents from the Microsoft Office Suite i.e. Word, Excel, Power Point.
- Eventually the employee will move from his desk and i.e. attends a meeting where he can access a corporate WIFI network that in the vast majority of sites will have a proxy.
With a mobile device I would need:
- Sync locally with the desktop the contacts, calendar and tasks
- Surf the WEB using the corporate WIFI network
- Configure an Exchange account that forces to install a certificate
- Read (and eventually modify Word or Excel documents)
With my current Android device this is what it happens:
- I can sync using HTC Sync only the contacts (as calendar is only supported if your account is Exchange)
- I cannot surf the WEB as ther is no support for WiFI proxy.
- I cannot configure an Exchange account as ther is no way of importing/installing a certificate
- In order to modify Office documents I need to pay for an app.
I would appreciate if somebody:
- Has encountered same problems as me
- Has any clue about the eventual fix of this issues

There is no such thing as "wifi proxy". You can however configure HTTP proxy on your phone via ADB.

I second this, Drop donut and goto a Hero rom. This has all the features provided by HTC that you are seeking.

You'll not find a donut HTC branded sapphire yet... you'll need to wait a while for those.
For cupcake roms I recommend you to NOT use those ported HERO Roms. They will run slow on sapphire devices and are actually just ported to show off with the sense interface (which is not yet released for the sapphire). They are definitely not suited to be used in a corporative environment.
I advice you to look for a stable HTC sapphire rom which has the HTC framework (so full exchange support).

Where can I find those ROMS? Looking in XDA and on Internet all ROMs seem to be either Google or Hero ports. I did not manage to find "HTC branded Sapphire" . By the way my device is a Vodafone Magic Spain with:

If you install the cyanogen rom to your phone it gives you an app called work email. This lets you connect to the microsoft exchange server to get your email
As for word documents and the like check out an application called quickoffice:

I can't find it on the android market so you must have to get it direct from their site.
edit: Also I think wifi proxy works with the rom. I think the wifi at my uni is via proxy. Before I installed the rom I could not connect, afterwards I could. Let me know how it goes for you.

Support for SSL?

I am thinking about coding a frontend app (thats the correct term, right?) for an online sms service. The service is http-based requiring forst a login to the site itself, and then another form sending the actual message. The login site is http but once you've logged in it's all https, including the message page.
Is there any built-in support for SSL in Android?
I am using HTC Hero btw.

Problems with the default Exchange Mail Client

I've just bought my Galaxy S.
I have problems with the default Exchange Email client from the phone.(is this Samsung one, or Android?).
At the begining it was working fine, without any issues.
I made a firmware update using Odin to I9000XWJG5 and it was not working anymore. When I was trying to configure it all the time I was getting "Unable to connect to open connection to server". I checked with a USB tracing tool and I saw that the email client is crashing.
Meantime I updated to the last VDF Romania verision I9000BUJF5, but the behaviour is the same.
What it is starnge is that I installed an Market Exchange Clent, Touchdown, and it is working just fine (using Active Sync connection to Exchange Server).
What do you think? Which can be the issue?
The funy thing is that with an other I9000 with the same software, is working the default Exchange Email client! So it is something with my hardware?

I have same problem. Any solution? I use 3rd party like TouchDown and RoadSync are working fine. Is this ROM problem?
One more thing: the same behaviour is hapening if I try to configure yahoo mail!!! It is a problem with the embeded email client!

On my side I have already tested a lot of mail app and a lot of ROM ( australian JG2 I think and JFF, JM2, JM5, JG8 and JP3)
For all the 3rd party mail app ( htc work mail, k9, touch down) it basically works all the time
For the integrated mail app I had the following issues :
* Unable to connect to open connection to server for all the exchange account
* Unable to connect to open connection to server only on the subfolder ( the inbox was working)
* Unable to connect to open connection to server for the Hotmail
* Hotmail mail downloaded but not displayed ( can't even see the list of mail ... just the count on the first mail app page)
This problem occured only with some ROM and sometime with the same ROM it happened or not after a reboot
For instance on JFF, JG8 and JM5 I have never been able to see the mail coming from the subfolder of my exchange account.
I works fine with JM2 and JP3
For the calendar, I have seen only once working with JM2. With this ROM instand of having 1 exchange calendar I had several calendar coming from my exchange account ( one for every type of event like work, family, personal ....)
Now with JP3 the calendar doesnt sync so I have to use gmail to sync my exchange
So no solution to propose ...
Iwill install again tomorrow JM2 to see if the mail and calendar definitely works with this one

Good news from my side!
I found the issue I experienced.
The things are as follows: when you configure for the first time the default client, it's firstly connecting to ssl.samsungmobile.com server!!!! This I noticed only after I installed wireshark program on the mobile. My problem ead that I am using a separate APN for checking emails. This APN doesn't have access to internet. So it was impossible to reach that public server!!!! And the error was "unable to open a connection to server". It was speaking abot the samsung ssl server and not my company's Exchange Server!!!! Crazy thing.
So at the first time of email client connection setting I used the internet APN till the internal setting algorithm reaches the ssl.samsungmobile.com connection and when it tries to reach the Exchange Mail Server I switch to vpn APN. And the Exchange emails are working without any problem!

It seems, however, that the client is in contact with the server: when I enter a wrong username, the error throws immediatly; with the correct credentials it takes 3 times longer.

So, I can see that the mail client doesn't integrate with Exchange's security policies. Very bad job indeed, as TouchDown AND HTC (Desire:Froyo) do quite well.
Is somebody please going to request Samsung to speed up?
Exchange 2007 vs. 2010
I just discovered that on Galaxy Tab, the mail client can deal with an Exchange 2007 Server with security policies activated, but it cannot get the compliance check done with Exchange 2010.
This is a known issue with certain versions of Android OS on phones available from different manufacturers and service providers. The only verified solution that we know of at this moment has come thru this community, as 'Mitch Roberson' has written below, I have marked that as an 'Answer' as well.
Now, let me list some related details here for everyone's information.
Phones are actually running into a provisioning issue against Exchange 2010 Server. This is evident from the IIS logs pastd below by some users and the logs we have seen in Microsoft Support. For example, you will see the following in IIS Log:

You can see that the Android mobile device is sending a 'FolderSync' EAS command to server for user JohnDoe with the DeviceID = Validate and Type = Android, and is being blocked by Exchange as it is not responding properly to the provision command from server. This is implemented thru Default Throttling Policy and the error it geenrates is error code: 449 (which essentially means device provisioning has failed). Generally this happens when client does not respond properly to provisioning commands from server where server informs mobile device that there are certain EAS policies applied by the Exchange Server Administrator and device needs to acknowledge those for implementation. This happens mostly when the device does not support all or a subset of EAS policies being implemented by the Exchange Server Administrator.
If you bring up the EMS command prompt and enter the following command, you will see the following output (similar to what we saw above in IIS Log):

We have seen this issue mostly with devices using Android 2.1, users who have been able to update their devices with Android 2.2 somehow, stopped running into this issue, without making any changes on the server side.
I contacted HTC Support (on 9/28 via http://www.htc.com/us/support/e-mail) about this issue and they responded (like other users have reported here), please keep in mind this can change at any time in future, so please contact HTC Support directly for updates:
"At this time we do not have any Android based device that will sync with an Exchange 2010 Server. We may provide future Android devices that do offer this. However, as there is currently no release information for any upcoming devices, we encourage you to continually visit HTC’s product page at http://www.htc.com/us"
While working on this issue we also discovered that Android provided limited support for EAS policies and is working to continually improve it in their upcoming versions. For more information, please see related posts below. Again, this information is subject to change at any moment, so please refer to Android website (http://code.google.com/p/android/issues/list) for current info.

So if your server requires, for example, password history or expiration, or complex characters, then it won't be provisionable in Froyo. Our goal is to provide more policy support in future versions, but for now we support - password (PIN/alpha), minimum characters, max. fails to wipe, inactivity timeout, and remote wipe.”
2. Exchange Device Password policy not enforced when "Allow non-provisionable devices" is selected: http://code.google.com/p/android/issues/detail?id=8601
Fix for this issue is in the Android 2.2.1 Update, released recently (for Nexus One users, may not be available thru other service providers at this time, contact your service provider for any updates that they can provide for your device), Android now implements the policies it can rather than ignoring all policies and thus it can successfully sync with the server.

[Q][SOLVED] why Yahoo! Mail not supported?

I got "Account is not supported" - "Sorry, Yahoo! Mail is not currently supported" message when I try adding new email account for my Yahoo! Mail (not premium, I read somewhere it would've worked if it's premium).
I did search but no luck of finding relevant answer. I'm fully aware that there are alternatives such as Yahoo! app & K-9 Mail, this posting is just out of curiosity as to why. In general other Android phones support Yahoo! Mail (I know at least Evo & Sprint Hero do) -- could it be that Sprint puts more work into it whereas AT&T has been as always too busy with answering customers rants about Jobs-almighty's death-grip?
Edit: Solved! Thanks to armyengineer51 and FZ1Darren for the hint of going with manual setup.
The issue turns out to be Yahoo! Mail is (when auto-setup) using POP, which is not available for free accounts. I googled it and found BadBoy's post over at androidcommunity dot com forums that mentioned the host names for Yahoo! mail servers. Here's how i set it up:
- choose manual settings
this is your incoming mail configurations
- fill in user name (your Yahoo email) & pass
- select IMAP, server: imap.mail.yahoo.com
- select SSL, leave port as default
- hit next (authenticating)
this is your outgoing mail configuration
- fill in user name & pass (same as incoming)
- SMTP server: smtp.mobile.mail.yahoo.com
- select SSL, leave port as default
- hit next (authenticating)
if servers are reachable & your cred is correct at this point you just have to label & set your "From" name for this email account.
- done
Why not just download the yahoo mail app?
Just do the manual setup and it works fine, I've got three yahoo accounts on mine, no problems.

the auto setup didn't work for my .sbcglobal (att-yahoo) email. manual worked fine for 2 att-yahoo accounts.
The Yahoo Mail app from the market is pretty lame. Doesn't delete email off the server, can't open attachments, can't edit forwarded email either.
This works for me also. I don't know why ,but after flashing from CM6 to Liberated and back to stock, my Aria didn't want to auto set up yahoo correctly. Gmail worked just fine on any ROM.

Corporate email - No Android Support?

I have an Incredible with 2.2 and Touchdown installed. I just switched jobs to a corporation which claims to only support Iphone and Blackberry. This is troublesome, because I don't want to switch to a 2nd device just to get corporate email.
I can access my corporate email from my phone by going to the corporation's secure OWA server, but I want to get Push email on the phone. On the OWA site, it lists all the server and domain information, but I can't get Touchdown to work. It looks like the company uses Exchange 2007.
Since Touchdown is secure, is there any way for me to get push email from my company, even though they only claim to support iphone/Blackberry?

even if they support just iphone and blackberry, you should be able to get it to work on the inc. just get the server address, domain name (chances are you wont really need it unless the server requires it but get it anyways) and it should work. just try setting it up on the regular phone email. I have exchange 2008 sbs and have no issues.

How do I know which of the following to use as server address, domain... there are a lot of things that say server in the OWA general settings:
Exchange mailbox address: XXXX
Outlook Web Access host address: XXXX
Outlook Web Access host name: XXXX
Client Access server name: XXXX
Mailbox server name: XXXX
... I tried using "Outlook Web Access host address" and it did populate my email and calendar, but when I tried to update something on my calendar on either the device or the OWA server, they wouldn't sync correctly. It also wouldn't download my last 2 weeks worth of email, even though I have that selected in Touchdown.

What does that matter if my company doesn't support Android? Doesn't that mean they block these devices?
You can set up an Exchange ActiveSync account on the DINC. We just upgraded to Exchange 2010 (which means HTML emails pushed!) and the only thing you should need is the domain, server address, username, and password.

Ok, but you're not answering my question. If you look in the string above, I'm asking which address I enter for the server. There are multiple server names.

None of the above will give you the server address and domain name. You will have to ask that from the tech support people in your office. it will be something like:
server address: mail.ibm.com
domain: ibm3
username: ssmith (should not be [email protected] format)
password: whatever you enter into owa
thats all you will need. just ask your tech support people. its the same info you would need to set up outlook access on mail.app if you have a mac. just tell them that and you should get the info u need

If none of those are the right address, then why when I plugged in the server name that ended with "/owa" did my calendar and email populate on Android? I tried putting the same info into my Ipad and it wouldn't work. Also, my Android calendar doesn't seem to sync very accurately. But just curious as to why entering the server address that ended with /owa did anything?

Sorry, I'm burning the midnight fuel here and totally misses you're using Touchdown to connect. You can just skip to the bottom of this post then, my comments were in regards to using the built-in Exchange ActiveSync services on the phone.

I definitely can't speak for every Android device out there, but since this post is in the Droid Incredible forum...
I'm running my Droid Inc. with version 2.2, which supports Exchange ActiveSync. Do you have an option to connect to Exchange ActiveSync on the phone? If so, the only things you'll need are your email address and password.
What I can tell you about that address /owa is exactly that: you've connected to the same website OWA server, you're looking at all this server info for. The website server and Exchange ActiveSync server are normally not the same server address, at least that's the way I run the servers for my company... It's also the reason everyone is telling you the info you have won't work, because the names and method to connect are different.
Your best bet is to ask them to send you the instructions they hand out for an iPhone to connect, since it also uses ActiveSync I'm positive whatever settings they're using will be the same. Either way, that's the closest information you'll get to the right settings.

I use touchdown, an do IT for my company. In touchdown did you hit Menu-Enable Push? It sounds like you have it working, try adding an event to your calendar, then manually sync touchdown. Does an event or email show up then?

There is a known issue in android that it will not work with exchange 2010 sp1 server. For some reason the sp1 on the server kills android ( but iPhone continues to function). It has to do with eas but this will hopefully be fixed in gingerbread.

It is a bug, but everything I read in that link was for connection issues with the native Exchange ActiveSync. TouchDown was the work around until they got the native Exchange ActiveSync working correctly, which I don't believe is the issue the OP is having since he's using TouchDown currently.
I've been using TD for the last three months on our Exchange system without issue. My phone vibrates before Outlook even pops up that I have an email, it's a "warning" system!
He said his corporation only supports iPhone & BB.
BB enforces the use of it's BES server license for security and RIM royalties.
Does iPhone have a similar solution to BES?
If so, android exchange may be futile.
GOOD / VOX would be a security product for android, similar to BES.

I got my work email to work with Moxier mail, but not Touchdown with the same settings my IT dept hands out for iphone. There are a couple of strange bugs though. I've noticed that when I leave the work Wifi and transfer over to either 3g or another wifi signal, my email, contacts, tasks, and calendar refreshes from scratch. This is super annoying because I have thousands of contacts. This happens in both Moxier and Touchdown...
And on to Touchdown, which has been the bane of my existence. I've entered the proper server/domain/login information, and 1/10 times it downloads everything from scratch (which takes hours). Then I'll switch to another wifi connection or to 3g, and I'll lose all the information and I'll have to hit resync. When I resync, 99% of the time it hangs somewhere along the line and doesn't load all of my information. This battle can go on indefinitely until everything finally loads - but then all the info will eventually randomly disappear again and I'm back at square one again.
Since the same thing is happening in both Touchdown and Moxier, it makes me think this isn't a coincidence. But why would my information erase when I change signals and then have to completely refresh? And Touchdown probably takes 10 times longer to reload my info than does Moxier.
Any thoughts from the experts?
Bump. Can't anyone help me with Touchdown? It keeps randomly refreshing. Sometimes it's just the inbox, sometimes the sent box, sometimes contacts, and sometimes all of the above. What is going on?
Try contacting the app support people yet?
You can set it to poll for the folders you want it to refresh. You can also enable or disable push, and you can select which folders to refresh. When it goes to refresh, it will always refresh what you've told it to, did you check these settings?

iPhone and Android both use ActiveSync. If one works conceivably the other should, but it's a question of how they're administering the server side. I've seen IT departments that don't turn on ActiveSync at the user level until they confirm that the user is using an approved device.
The fact that the OP says that the calendar is synching and not mail says that it's a client side issue. For starters he should have to just specify the name of the server that's doing OWA and not the full URL path and he's stated that he's adding an /owa to the path.
So unless he has a really fubar Exchange server where he's at everything so far points to client config.
