[Q][SOLVED] why Yahoo! Mail not supported? - HTC Aria General

I got "Account is not supported" - "Sorry, Yahoo! Mail is not currently supported" message when I try adding new email account for my Yahoo! Mail (not premium, I read somewhere it would've worked if it's premium).
I did search but no luck of finding relevant answer. I'm fully aware that there are alternatives such as Yahoo! app & K-9 Mail, this posting is just out of curiosity as to why. In general other Android phones support Yahoo! Mail (I know at least Evo & Sprint Hero do) -- could it be that Sprint puts more work into it whereas AT&T has been as always too busy with answering customers rants about Jobs-almighty's death-grip?
Edit: Solved! Thanks to armyengineer51 and FZ1Darren for the hint of going with manual setup.
The issue turns out to be Yahoo! Mail is (when auto-setup) using POP, which is not available for free accounts. I googled it and found BadBoy's post over at androidcommunity dot com forums that mentioned the host names for Yahoo! mail servers. Here's how i set it up:
- choose manual settings
this is your incoming mail configurations
- fill in user name (your Yahoo email) & pass
- select IMAP, server: imap.mail.yahoo.com
- select SSL, leave port as default
- hit next (authenticating)
this is your outgoing mail configuration
- fill in user name & pass (same as incoming)
- SMTP server: smtp.mobile.mail.yahoo.com
- select SSL, leave port as default
- hit next (authenticating)
if servers are reachable & your cred is correct at this point you just have to label & set your "From" name for this email account.
- done

Why not just download the yahoo mail app?

Just do the manual setup and it works fine, I've got three yahoo accounts on mine, no problems.

the auto setup didn't work for my .sbcglobal (att-yahoo) email. manual worked fine for 2 att-yahoo accounts.

The Yahoo Mail app from the market is pretty lame. Doesn't delete email off the server, can't open attachments, can't edit forwarded email either.
This works for me also. I don't know why ,but after flashing from CM6 to Liberated and back to stock, my Aria didn't want to auto set up yahoo correctly. Gmail worked just fine on any ROM.

Gmail finally working!

I tried hard to make Gmail work with Outlook.
I was able to read my account, but I couldn't send anything, even with the support of this clever forum.
So I finally gave up trying to make Outlook work, and I switched to a free email application using SSL.
It's Qmail, written by a Japanese guy.
After a lot of investigation, I could have my Gmail account working, so if you're interested in understanding how, please continue reading this post.
(Actually Qmail is also a RSS reader and a newsgroup reader!)
If not, you don't need to go on.
1) Read this:
http://www.azol.ru/texts/QMail3_eng_FAQ.htm
excellent guide
2) Download the program here (with the page translated):
http://www.excite.co.jp/world/english/web/?wb_url=http://q3.snak.org/download/&wb_lp=JAEN&wb_dis=2
There are two files to be downloaded:
a) the stable version http://q3.snak.org/q3/nph-snapshot.cgi?q3u-ppc2003se-armv4-ja.zip
b) the openSSL library to be able to authenticate in Gmail. It's this one:
http://q3.snak.org/download/openssl/openssl-wince-arm-0.9.8a.zip
3) Put all the files in your SD card (strongly suggested) or wherever you want. Creater a subfolder named "mail_in" (in my case).
I suggest to create a link to q3u.exe files to have it in the program folder. I did it using Resco Explorer.
4) rotate the screen in portrait (or you won't be able to se the command bar, and anyway it will be more difficult).
5) Go to Tool-Account and create a new one using options as stated here: http://gmail.google.com/support/bin/answer.py?answer=13287
Incoming Mail (POP3) Server - requires SSL: pop.gmail.com
Use SSL: Yes
Port: 995
Outgoing Mail (SMTP) Server - requires TLS: smtp.gmail.com (use authentication)
Use Authentication: Yes
Use SSL: Yes Port: 465
Account Name: your Gmail username (including '@gmail.com')
Email Address: your full Gmail email address ([email protected])
Password: your Gmail password
Now THE MOST IMPORTANT part for me. I could read mail but never send before I realized I had to put In the tab ADVANCED, in "Identity" field my gmail address.
Click on the (small) sync icon at the bottom (right) and it should work.

hope it helps someone not to spend hours to make it work!

My dear...just use Web IS mail and it will auto congifure for it...I use it and it is perfect
Gmail and Outlook
I have mine working with poutlook no problem. Google "gmail on ppc" to find guides on how to set it up.
Hi hdubli, I know Webis mail does it, but it costs money, while qmail is freeware.
illwil, I'm happy your poutlook is doing the job. I tried hard to have the same result, but I couldn't, and I didn't want to spend extra-money to have what I already expected from poutlook.
Putting exactly the same parameters in qmail it simply worked.
Maybe someone else is in my same situation, but I agree with you poutlook should be tried first.
Hey i did a google search for gmal clientsand came across this
http://www.aximsite.com/boards/showthread.php?t=70622&page=1&pp=25
is this what you guys were talking about
autumno, did you try out the procedure on the aximsite?
Hi,
basically the setup is the same, but I couldn't make it work.
After succesfully using qmail for a while, I decided a completely different approach to gmail.
Considering it gives you the chance to have your messages as rss feeds, I'm using Egress as RSS reader.
It's here:
http://www.garishkernels.net/egress.html
It's not free but good. Unfortunately the free RSS reader I generally used, PRSS doesn't support the gmail format.
So I read my messages using Egress, and if I need to answer, I use its internal browser. It works.
hey i tried to get gmail going on my xda and face the following issue
whenever i try to connect to my gmail account, it first tries to logon
and then goes back to the display showing my user account and password
Incoming E-mail Password
User name --> my user name
Password --> my password
Domain --> Blank
can you guys please help me
this has resulted in a fourth account
Text Messages
Outlook E-mail

Would be excellent as mine has stopped pushing consistently recently and only works when it feels like. Does this now work for you? I have a .co.uk address and run rooted 2.1 stock.
Sent from my HTC Hero using XDA App
I have not test it on Android 2.1 but it is working with .co.uk addresses
I let Gmail get my hotmail, and label it as such, and even reply from Gmail as from my Hotmail account.
Does the Hotmail ActiveSync also sync calendar events?
Yep and contacts

Yahoo! IMAP over Wi-Fi Working with Stock Mail

Hello All! Forever I've wanted my mail combined in the stock app, but Yahoo! IMAP wouldn't work over wi-fi without using K9, etc. I tried again and have success thanks to mtwebster's git commit: http://github.com/CyanogenMod/android_packages_apps_Email/commits/froyo
If you want your Yahoo! mail in the stock email (vanilla email client, not htc) app, add your IMAP account manually as usual and use the following incoming and outgoing servers:
Incoming server: imap.next.mail.yahoo.com
Outgoing server: smtp.mobile.mail.yahoo.com
I've tested it and it works great for me! I now have a combined mailbox with my Exchange (work) mail and my yahoo mail and can access both via Wi-Fi or 3G!
Enjoy
i dont know about the "next" command in ur first string..but ive always used :
INCOMING : imap.mail.yahoo.com
OUTGOING : smtp.mobile.mail.yahoo.com
im sure ur way works..but theres an alternative if the first way doesnt work for anyone for some odd reason

Hey SoCal. I saw your other post about ordering your Dinc. I think you'll love it! Welcome!
As for the servers, the ones you listed are the ones I had and they will NOT work via Wi-Fi (except if using K9 mail and I hate that ugly @ss icon and wanted one mail client and one inbox for all of my mail) but work fine over 3G. That's why I had to find the others. Give it a test and you won't even be able to add your account to the stock client while connected to a wireless access point. It will keep telling you "The username or password are not correct". When I'm at home or at work, I'm always connected to wireless, so not being able to get my mail is unacceptable.
Thanks for the reply, though!
awesome catch then eh? kudos on that!
and thanks for the welcome. being on an HDPI device is gonna be a bit of a learning curve as far as development goes..but im sure with a bit of the forum help ill be able to find my way just fine.
not working for me...

This is the regular plain-jane HTC mail app? I tried using these server names to set up my regular yahoo (not y-plus) account...left SSL and default ports unchanged. I had to switch to 3G-only even to get past the incoming server page in manual setup. I got the account set up, but with WiFi active I get the same old errormsg.
Is yours still working? I wonder what we did differently.

No, that was on the vanilla email client when I was using Ruby. I tried with the htc client and got the same issue that you did. I might have to restore my ruby backup and see if it still works and what the ssl settings are.
EDIT: I just verified that this works on the vanilla email client, via wifi, with security set to none but won't work on the htc client.

Email Alerts

Hi I have a question on email alerts. search did not yield any answers.
My N1 is connected via HSDPA to my Hotmail account (paid, if that matters).
I often get email alerts, from the bottom up if that makes sense. for example: the topmost email on the page is the latest, but sometimes the n1 is refreshing from the bottom too, and it alerts an unread email as "new email" there.
I just want to get alerts of new emails.
Anyone?
Change your email settings for Hotmail to Exchange ActiveSync, it works a million times better.
Thanks.
I do not have an exchange server. I use windows live on the web to read mail normally.
I'm using these settings:
Incoming:
Protocol - POP
Email address - my email
Username - my email
Password - my password
POP Server - pop3.live.com
Security type - SSL
Server port - 995
Outgoing:
SMTP server - smtp.live.com
Security type - TLS
Server port - 587
Windows live is now exchange compatible, hence my reply.
The hotmail exchange settings don't work for android
unless you got them working somehow?
This is what I've tried:
http://www.liveside.net/2010/08/30/exchange-activesync-now-available/
http://androidforums.com/incredible...have-hotmail-exchange-activesync-working.html
I don't have a real exchange server to setup touchdown with.
http://groups.google.com/group/nitrodesk/web/installing-the-latest-beta?pli=1
It works fine for Android with those settings, I've been using it for months on the stock email app.

Hotmail and push with Android 2.1

I've an HTC Hero with the 2.1 not rooted.
I tryed to use the mail from HTC to configure hotmail with push but doesn't work.
I also tried k-9 mail with the same result.
There is a way to make hotmail working with push?.
no solution available for this problem?
I couldn't get it to work reliably either. Worked at first but then stopped and couldn't rely on it. My solution was to send all hotmail to gmail and use it from there, to be honest once I got used to it I wish I'd done it sooner : )

I use hotmail on my 2.2 hero and it works fine. You have to set it up as an exchange activesync account.
Username: your email ad
Password: your password
Server: m.hotmail.com
Make sure the 'accept all ssl certificates' is checked and use secure ssl.
Thats what works for me!

It's not working for me as well.
Orange Hero 2.1 unrouted

It doesn't seem to work on the HTC Mail client for some reason.
What you need to do is download and install the Stock Google Mail client for 2.1 and set up your Push Hotmail on there and use that as appose to the HTC one. I've got it working on mine and it's full Push mail
You can get the Stock Mail client from here:
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=668043
You'll need to:
- go into Manual Setup
- ActiveSync
- Username: full email address
- Password: you password
- Server: m.hotmail.com
- 'Use Secure Connection (SSL)' is ticked
- 'Accept all SSL certificates' leave it unticked.
This is a good application, configured and work on Push mail. But I uninstalled it because I already have two clients, one "Google Mail " and the other HTC default client. Now I'm using 3 accounts, hotmail, gmail and my office mail on the default client. And it is connected to the mail widget on home screen.
Is it possible to remove default / pre installed Google Mail client. I no more need it. It's just an overhead.
Thanks
