hi guys... so i don't know how i got this vibrant soooooo far gone .. im afraid i have gotten it too far...
i was doing a odin back up and odin froze!... i did nothing for hours!!!! finally i shut off the program.... the phone rebooted into a screen with a picture of a phone with a triangle then dots to a computer!!!
omg!!! so im freaking out.. anyone know if there is a way back from this?? i can't even get back into recovery mode!!
please any help will do......
there was a thread about that issue, turn off your phone, unplug the usb cord, plug the usb cord. hold vol up and vol down and the power button. it will come on but when it goes off release the power button and keep holding down the vol up and vol down. should go into auto download mode. then u can reload it via odin.

this is normal just continue to download mode as normal.
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=741027
you can save your device through odin, plug your phone in to your computer and try to go into download mode may take a couple tries, and flash the stock ROM you can find on these forums
i have already tried the sequence to get it into download mode... it doesnt work... tried adb and nothing registers....
anymore ideas? looks like im going to have to do a warranty exchange.
The only way I can reliably get to download mode is: power off, remove battery, replace battery, hold both vol buttons, plug in usb. works every time though.

are you using a .pit file? and if so is it the right 512 .pit file?
if both those are yes, delete the one on your system and re-download it.
I had this same exact problem a few weeks back Odin would hang on the pit file, just redownloaded and it worked like a charm.
and just a quick reminder of everything out for the Vibrant right now
Only stock firmware use the 'PDA' option a pit file, and re-partition
froyo firmware use the 'PDA' option and a pit file, no re-partition
JACs kernels use the 'CSC' option and no pit file, no-repartition
i have a Bell Vibrant and all the methods don't work. i tried the 3 button (remove batt, place in batt, plug USB, wait for the the ''star" to appear, hold VOL+/- and POWER and wait for the screen to turn off, release POWER, but it just goes back to recharging screen. tried it 40 times
tried the power off, remove battery, replace battery, hold both vol buttons, plug in usb. no go as well.
ANything else? I'm stuck at the boot screen (the 'S' glowing part).
This is what always works for me.
Unplug your USB from your phone
Makes sure ODIN is ready to go on your PC
Hold down the Down Volume and Power until the download screen comes on
Then plug your USB back into the phone
fire up odin
pull your battery
connect phone to pc WITH THE BATTERY OUT
hold volume up+down and power
put battery in while still holding those buttons
the screen will light up with....something. Wait for the screen to blink and then release the buttons.
You are now in download mode!
i will try those methods. Thanks.
crap, still no. just keeps showing the battery charging. i remember rescuing my htc magic so many times, but no go on this guy.....
Odin all fired up when doing this......

Did you make sure that the USB was unplugged when you used my method of holding down the volume down button and power button together until the download screen came up?
If you are familiar with ADB. You can also power your phone on and then plug in the USB and then type in the command line:
adb reboot download
to get it to reboot into download mode.
You can also use this command from the recovery console if you are able to get to it.

Dude, the Vibrant is new to us all. None like it. So dev wise its harder to explain and understand when we are used to coming from a one press method, now were using Odin, and Thor's hammer to flash our phones, which is god awful, no pun intended.
Dont flame your fellow Vibrant user cause he doesent understand the 613 steps it involves, and every other way to do so. Help the kid.
I am also in this position, just using a finger in the socket method, if its on it'l shock me, know what i mean. Just try it all. I have a feeling its getting harder and harder to brick phones because the manufacture is not retarded, they fix them right back, and ship them back out to customers who need replacements. I know this as a friend works at an AT&T shipping warehouse.
So cant we all just hit a bong, or get a long? And help?
If someone could explain all this 512PIT, PDA, and CSC, and Phone. It would help so much, sometimes a picture is worth a thousand words. Just sayin.

Yeah man, i'll try it again!! And when do I start typing (sending out the adb command) when the power turns on? Thanks.
Question is: when i press power+vol Down, the boot splashscreen comes on (Galaxy S etc etc).....
I am sorry you have a Bell Vibrant, it is a little different than my phone. I found this hope this helps
HOWTO GET INTO DOWNLOAD-MODE:
- Turn off your Phone
- Hold VOLUME DOWN + HOME Buttons
- While holding VOLUME DOWN + HOME Buttons press POWER Button until you reach Download-Mode
- Release all Buttons
I also read that some of the Bell Vibrants had their Download/Recovery mode disabled.
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=754673&highlight=bell
As far as the adb command I would start as soon as it powers on. It will say "error:device not found" at first, but just keep on hitting arrow up and hitting the enter in the command window until it accepts the command.
Good Luck

Bricked your phone? You've come to the right place, if you're one of the blessed. A lot of the newer Captivates have button combinations disabled. Before you go modding your phone, make sure that you can get into download or recovery using these button combos. If you can't, your best bet is to return your phone to an AT&T store and beg for a new one.
THE BUTTON COMBOS
Power-power
Download-volume up+volume down+plug in usb cord
Recovery-volume up+volume down+power
There you have it. Thanks for reading.
What is the point of this when there are 3 methods in the Odin 3 one click thread which is a sticky? Just curious how this deserves its own thread.
When my phone was stuck at the Galaxy S logo, i was able to send the adb reboot recovery command to it to get into recovery mode.
Are bricked phones normally stuck at the logo too, or was it just me?
I wanted to link to just the button combos in the bible. Also, the one click Odin isn't a sticky anymore.
From mah fonez
Why don't you just link to a single post in a thread or post in the odin thread and link to that single post? Just a suggestion so there isn't too many threads started for just a little information like you posted. Great work on the bible though. Glad to see a lot of stuff being compiled into one thread.
How does this relate to development? With a title like this, i thought we had some button hacks.
BAH!
You should also include more than the button combinations as well if you're going to make this post useful. Simply holding the volume buttons + power will do absolutely nothing on my phone. I spent a good amount of time looking for more detailed instructions on recovery mode when the phone was new and no one posted them. There are also a lot of posts that talk about the at&t splash screen flashing and when to release the buttons but that's not terribly useful either. Download mode is a little more covered but still has lots of people giving different instructions. For those the future new people that might read this thread,
For Recovery mode:
Power off
Hold both volume buttons
Push power
Release power when you see the AT&T splash screen
Release the volume buttons a second or so later
After the splash screen goes away you should be in recovery mode
Continuing to hold all three buttons will simply cause the AT&T splash screen to flash at you. I can also continue to hold the volume buttons after releasing power but it is not needed.
For Download mode:
Power Off
Plug USB into computer
Hold both volume buttons
Plug USB into phone
The above will immediately send my phone into download mode. For flashing, most people recommend the steps below to maximize the chance of success with Odin
Power off
Remove battery, sim, microsd
Open Odin
Plug USB into computer
Hold both volume buttons
Plug USB into phone
Put battery in
You should now be in download mode and free to flash with odin.
I agree with the holding volume up and down while plugging the phone into the computer with Odin opened and configured to flash soon as it detects the phone.
All other methods only add confusion.
How do I get out of download mode?
oh nvm, I just removed battery and I could reboot it fine.
I am stuck on this screen
h ttp://img820.imageshack.us/img820/530/screenshotzz.jpg (remove space I can't post links)
I am on downloading mode but the screen looks like this I am using windows 7 64bit, I tried installing 32 bit on another partition to see if it helped but it didn't
Am I missing something or do you have to have something installed before the procedure

You have odin started before you plugged in your usb cable into your phone or computer? Does you computer recognize you phone in mass storage mode? The screen shot you provided shows the phone is not recognized by odin.
I got it now but I am stuck even further odin finished no errors and now the phone just loops on the att logo, or if I try to plug the usb both up and down volume buttons pressed to enter recovery mode again it just loops the battery charging any ideas thanks
This is all covered thoroughly in the "READ BEFORE FLASHING" sticky. Which everyone should read BEFORE flashing!!! Hey, what a coincidence.
dont kno if im posting this in the correct section or not but can some one plz help? i was trying to flash the stock files for my samsung vibrant with odin, but it froze so i unplugged and tried to reboot my phone but the phone to pc screen came up. ive tried holding the volume buttons + power to get back to download mode, but it just reboots and goes back to it, can anybody help?
Did you hold the power button down till it disappears and then release the power button immediately as it disappears?
hadnt tryin releasing the power button right away but i just tried and still no luck
Johnz is right. To make sure, unplug & plug back in the usb cable, then hold down the volume keys & power, wait till the screen flashes to black, then release power.
Unplug and pull the battery.
Install battery.
While holding both volume buttons, plug in usb cable.
Have odin ready to go, it seems to help. The phone should power up directly to download mode, once odin sees it, hit start.
i dont get what im doing wrong because ive tried what u guys said but after the screen flashes black when it comes back on its the phone to pc screen. ive also noticed that if i pull the battery while the usb cord is connected the phone stays on at that screen until i remove the usb cord, is that normal?
i just read that if the normal ways dont work that means ur phone is hardware locked. looks like im gonna have to try to send it back to tmobile and hope for the best
Try the above, but also hold the home key. I did the exact same as you, and this enabled me to get back to download mode, so I could Odin.
1) Remove battery, SIM, and sd card.
2) Plug in USB Cable.
3) Hold down Vol +/- as well as home.
4) Press power button for 2 seconds, then release.
This should get you into download mode. Then you can Odin back to whatever you were intending to do.
thanx for all the help guys but nothing seems to be working for me
Just throwing out an update incase anyone was wondering, I got my replacement phone yesterday and it turned out to be hardware locked as well. Tried to flash the fix for it and it failed and bricked my phone! So after calling tmobile they will be sending me another replacement and hopefully that one wont be locked as well
I had the same problem trying to get into Download Mode, I got into download mode and using ODIN tried to flash update. The process was stick for 10 min.
So I unplugged USB and got this phone to PC icon. All I had to do to fix it was to go into download mode again by holding both vol +/- keys and pressing power button until screen goes black then release the power button as soon as the screen went black. If you hold the button longer it will go into recovery mode. Then open ODIN again and re-connect USB and ODIN will detect COM port. However you have to make sure that all samsung usb drivers are installed. That is it. Then flash the update and you all set. The phone will reboot and you are back up and runing.

there is another way to this method, that works on any vibrant i've tried it on and also the captivates, had to help a friend restore his yesterday.
remove battery, sd and sim cards
plug in usb cable to pc and phone
hold down the volume buttons only
pop in the battery
if it comes up to the battery charging icon, pull the battery and put it back in again, should go right into download mode.
again, this works on any vibrant i've tried it on, and the captivate as well, good luck.
So I installed this (Android 2.2 build i9000XXJPH) on my Tmobile Vibrant and it worked beautifully, but then I went to root my device through "one-click" and when it got to the part in recovery mode, i tried pressing the power button to apply the update but nothing happened and now I'm stuck in recovery mode all the time, as soon as I plug the phone in to charge, or plug it in the computer via usb, or push the power button, the damn thing goes into recovery mode and stays there. I can use the volume buttons to navigate up and down through the options and if I hold the power botton down long enough the phone will turn off and back on again. But if I press the power button once (as in select an option) it doesn't do anything. I tried every single option out there to get into download mode with the battery out and usb in and volume buttons then put bat in....etc nothing works. I need to get into download mode
anyone?................

Try holding volume -+ then plug in the usb at the same time this should go into download mode.
P.S. dont touch the power button for nothing.
Try these steps:
1. Take out your battery
2. Hold vol up and vol down, continue to hold
3. Insert USB while still holding down the vol buttons
That should get you into download mode (it did for me)
thanks but I already tried that, doesn't work still goes into recovery mode
Does adb work in recovery?
Sent from my SGH-T959
nope it says device not connected
Try the same procedure with the USB cable plugged in. I go into recovery if the cable is unplugged and I go into download mode if the cable is attached. Buttons are always the same. Vol +/- then power until I see the screen show something. Then release power.
Well my friend, u flashing the i9000 rom to ur fone is the problem. They button set up is different they have a big menu button in the middle and we dont. That y u cant move it at all.

make sure your phone can get into download mode before flashing a i9000 rom. If your phone is able to get into download mode before flashing a i9000 rom then it's general impossible to brick your phone by flashing a i9000 rom. After flashed to a i9000 rom, to get to download mode, you hold "volume down" + "soft home key" + "power button" for 3 seconds. If "volume down" don't work, try holding "volume up".
I have done it many times with i9000 roms...the "soft home key" is the touch home icon on the bottom of our Vibrant.

I honestly searched for it, and did find few posts but everytime I flashed the phone, it just didn't feel like the right one, so thats why I asked for help here.
Thanks for the link though, much appreciated.
same issue
So i am having the same issue...gonna try to get it into download mode and go back to stock. You (original poster) said you had the Android 2.2 build i9000XXJPH working in your device? I did'nt get that far, that is what has me stuck in this recovery limbo...how did you originally get it to work? And also assuming I work for T-MO, assume that 2.2 is coming out NO time soon!! This kind of is a bummer, I love the vibrant but I think I need to go back to a true android, I can't keep feeling left behind because Samsung cares more about friggin avatar then updating their phones.
Flash the froyo that dont brick your phone (search the forum), and after that flash the stock vibrant.
If you flash a ROM not meant for your phone I'm surprised you made it this far.
~SB
toast
Yea i was suprised I made it this far too....BUT now my vibrant is toast!! I had it back to stock, woke up this morning and accidentally accepted the J16 OTA from TMO, and now my phone is done done done....I cant get it to do anything, no lights, camera or action. So having no way to get back to download mode I think Im screwed. This was a problem from the gate, cause Samsung gave me the phone from a learning seminar and the 1st J16 MR soft bricked me. So at this point I have searced every forum I can find and I think Im screwed. NOw if I could only get ahold of my Samsung rep to see if they replace it for me....IF anyone has any strokes of genius to maybe help me out please....
I must be doing something wrong here.
I have Odin 3 1.70.
I have the .tar file JJL4 thread in the development forum.
Samsung drivers are installed.
I take out the battery, then put it back in, then hold vol+/vol- and hit power and I'm in system recovery screen.
The last entry on the phone says installing muti-CSC.
I then connect the phone to the PC and it recognizes something on Com3. I then load the tar file in the pda section of ODIN. I'm not loading the PIT file.
When I click start, odin says file analysis, then setupconnection, then nothing else happens after that.
I don't need the .pit file, right? If I use the .pit file, does that erase the programs and data that I had stored on the phone?
Help?
I had a similar problem using the same version of Odin. Then I flashed it again using Odin 1.30 and it worked fine.

You need to get your phone in Download Mode, not Recovery. If you see a yellow Android with a shovel, you're in Download Mode. Check out the stickies and the Vibrant Bible.
Well, all of the instructions say to hold vol+/vol- and then power. When I do that it takes me into the recovery screen.
How do I get it into the download screen then?
I have never seen this posted here or anywhere but this is how I get into download EVERY time. I also don't go into every post though lol.
With the phone off hold the volume buttons down THEN plug in the usb to the phone it will go straight to download mode. USB needs to already be plugged into PC too if that wasn't obvious.
I think the way it's actually posted though is Volume +, Home button, and Power not both volumes. I have never gotten it to work that way and I stumbled onto the above way by accident.

Wow, you think that would be in the guides somewhere.
Phone off, holding both vol+/vol- and then plugging usb cable into the phone put my in downloading mode.
Was I doing something completely wrong before? Why wasn't it going into download mode?
Thank you much!
Flashing now, fingers crossed.
Turn off your phone, plug your phone in and when you see the green charging. Hold the. Volume up and
Down keys and the power key until you see the download mode.
Ok, so ODIN succeeded. It rebooted and got hung at the S.
I went into recovery mode, cleared the cache and rebooted again and I'm still stuck at the S?
What now?!
EDIT: Went into recovery and cleared cache again and I'm back up now.
great news! now you know how to odin. but majority of the time you will have to use a back up like titanium backup or nandroid from cwm to restore your apps and stuff. when using t-backup make sure not to select missing apps plus system data cause that can cause some force closes!
Z4 mod isn't working for me on this. Should it be?
What else will root this version?

I'm pretty sure I just bricked my **@#*& phone trying to Flash the Semaphore 1.6.0Bm kernel
It failed the first time around when I tried to flash it via Odin.
So I took the battery out like I usually do then went to put it back into download mode... To my surprise I cannot get into download or recovery mode anymore.
I've tried all button methods and none worked. I can't get past the screen that has the cell --- computer screen.. Looks like I may need a jig now...?
Any other ideas that I might be able to try?
Thanks.

Same thing.
I've left the battery out for over 20 minutes, tried it while plugged into the computer, the adapter and not plugged in at all.. Still nothing.
This sucks..
if the phone doesn't do anything at all you can probably take it in to your service center and tell them it wont turn on but it didn't get wet or anything... ubless they have some magical way to get it into download then they'll replace it if you're under warranty.

I tried the OneClick.jar heimdall method but it seems to not recognize that the phone is even plugged in.

I got this same problem when I installed CM7 on my T959d for the first time and Odin hung after clicking [Start]. Rebooted my phone and was greeted with a nice soft-brick screen. What a scare that was.
Here's what I did:
1. Take out the battery from the phone.
2. Plug the phone via USB to the PC (odin was open)
3. Hold down [VOL -] key
4. Hold down [POWER] key
I don't remember if the SGH-GTI9000 screen popped up, but if it does, wait for it to switch back to a black screen and then release just the [POWER] key, keeping [VOL -] pressed.
That put me back in Download Mode. Fired up ODIN again and the flash was successful this time around.
edit: Also, the Semaphore kernel i see in i9000 is for JVS roms. I'm not sure how that would affect darkys, since it's a JVR rom.
