As you all know, the Epic 4G doesn't have this feature. This really disappoints me. I was hoping to be able to play games and browse the web on my 42" tv, but now I won't be able to with the Epic. I don't know why Sprint and Samsung removed such an important feature of the Galaxy S line. We should write to Sprint and Samsung over the removal of this feature and ask them why? I hope it's just a software crippling rather than a hardware one, or Sprint has really let me down for the last time.

I'm pretty sure they'll have tv out for the epic by the end of the year
Have faith in the Devs my brother, for they shall deliver that which samsung&sprint will not.
This is purely speculation on my part.
I believe they will have TouchWiz 3.0 and TV out with the Froyo update later this year. As some of you might know, the current version of TouchWiz is more like 2.5 and is missing a few of the 3.0 features. I believe Sprint made this choice because of some of the issues the 3.0 version is having with lag and black screens.
Also I am hoping the USB to HDMI cable from Samsung will also come out this year and solve the issue.

All needed TV out files are in epic OS dump so I'm a little confused were those claiming features been removed are getting info from.

This. Probably. I suspect the software on the Epic is limited due to stability and time constraints. I wonder how soon someone can port over these features from say the Vibrant or Captivate. Unfortunately Samsung isn't the best to rely on for timely updates... but one can hope. In the meantime... DLNA for those with compatible TVs or PS3s

No, it was primarily due to the landscape orientation mode not working on the 3.0.

This is true. Samsung needs to update touchwiz 3.0 to work in landscape. The epic has lost a lot of features the other sgs phones have due to this. We all now how well samsung does updating there phones\software so good luck on that. It will be hard to port sgs rom's due to the hardware changes. Im sure there will be a rom with touchwiz 3.0 sometime but front camera, keyboard & landsacape will not work until they get ported if they can get ported(samsung drivers are not fully released so who knows how that will work out). They may have changed the back camera do to space issues. There are reports that the epic camera and video recording are not as good as the other sgs phones. Nothing comfirmed yet on rear camera until we get a epic teardown.
What I'd like to know, if the Epic does get micro usb - hdmi, how would you charge it? All of the micro usb - hdmi cables I've seen weren't split for power.. so you're looking at a couple hours max viewing IF it works.

It does split. The charger goes in the HDMI end.

That said, I'm going to make absolutely sure that the lack of TV-out via component and/or HDMI on the Epic is merely a software issue before buying it, and not due to a lack of the appropriate hardware.
I don't know what's the validity of the information on the page I'm going to link, but I clicked on a link comparing all the Galaxy S versions and I see that the Epic 4G's audio subsystem runs on a lower frequency than the others. It runs 44100hz instead of 48000hz, and seems to be the only one missing a controller named Wolfson WM8994E.
If this information turns out to be true, then the Epic 4G uses a different 3.5mm hardware piece, thus probably lacking the tv out feature from this port. I hope this is just misinformation. I thought more tv-out phone only showed vdo and pictures through the HDMI? I will never use a phones HDMI. Will there be any games on the phone that will be worth playing on the TV and how would you control the game with the HDMI wire hanging out the side of the phone? I also don't understand why you would want to go on the web with your phone through TV when you are at home. Isn't you home PC faster and has a better picture. I think the the TV-out would look bad on my 82" tv.
I will be truly bummed if Sammy ripped us on TV out hardware.

Many like myself use their phone for Pictures and Video recording.TV out feature allows us to view such material using AV composite TV cables.

YouTube HQ is available on the phone (just press "Menu" & "Watch in high quality"). Sprint TV must be used over your phone connection, because it needs to authorize that you are a Sprint user. TV Out is in the hardware... it will probably make it back into the software next month (or so) when Android 2.2 Froyo rolls out.
This phone is a premium media phone. Can playback 1080p, 720p, 480p video perfectly. Plays games at 60 fps. 5.1 Surround sound. Super AMOLED screen that makes LCD look dull and grey.

I believe EVO allows Sprint TV wifi....I could be wrong.
Well Hopefully they didn't use cripple jack...that's what it comes down to.

Nice combo not doubt about that my worry is that such great quality cant be viewed on my 50" Samsung plasma.
A true media phone should allow it.
Supposedly sprint asked Samsung to take the tv out feature because of the sprint tv :S im pretty sure our devs will give it back to us

As previously mentioned in this thread, sprint tv is not available over wifi regardless of the phone. I can also confirm that the evo does not allow it either.

I hope you're right about the hardware supporting tv out from the 3.5mm jack to rca and micro usb to hdmi, and Sprint and Samsung enabling them when Froyo hits. I think I'm holding out for the phone until I see confirmation that the hardware supports it. If not there's always the other Galaxy S phones on other carriers. I'd hate to pay more money for a phone that's crippled in key aspects of the Galaxy S line, such as multimedia

Let us be crystal clear: we love this phone. Nay, we adore it. But the fact remains that it's still very much an Android device -- which means that if you don't like Android now, odds are good that even Android executed on the most amazing hardware to date won't do much to change your opinion of it. You've also got to be concerned about upgradeability; Froyo is almost certainly around the corner now, and HTC hasn't done anything to suggest it's able to push Sense-powered updates in a timely fashion.
That said, this is truly one of the best smartphones ever made, and even spotty 4G -- a reality of a young technology that's going to take years to properly build out -- probably won't do much to hamper your enjoyment of this thing. It's reasonable to assume that phones like the EVO will ultimately come to every carrier over the next few months... but hey, if you jumped ship for Sprint to pick up this monster, we wouldn't be able blame you.

-battery life seems robust

This is going to be one solid phone. And yeah, I know engadget is not the end-all be-all of reviews, but a lot of people sure are going to be reading it as their audience is huge.
So the two weeks of waiting is now going to seem like 5 months, DAMN I want this phone. Can't wait for the first custom ROM . . .

The upgradeability issue is really the only major point that is preventing me from pre-ordering. I mean, how long is it going to be until Sense phones get 2.2? Months? It took several months for phones to get 2.1 I don't want to wait months for the supposed speed advantages that 2.2 brings.

Also that video is very disappointing. I don't understand why HTC cameras suck compared to what Apple uses but they need to fix it.

7. Review indicates good shutter response with photos - TP2 is annoyingly slow to take a photo.

1. Will have to wait 4 months for 4g (and that's according to Sprint) in my area
2. Camera lens flush with bezel, which means scratches, which sucks.
3. Mandatory accessories, like a GPS-style car dash mount and HDMI cable, will rape my wallet.
4. Video calling could not be tested in time for the review, which is a major feature for me. Hopefully Skype releases something for Android for video calls. 3g bandwidth is sufficient for Skype video calls, as i do it all the time from my embedded VZ card on my laptop. Maybe 'Skype HD for Android'? Has a nice ring to it, eh?

You do not need a expensive car mount, just get a cheap one, **** works the exact same way. Also, an hdmi cord is far from mandatory.
Only mandatory things I need is a car charger, wall charger, and usb cable

We need a Type D micro HDMI cable, not a regular type A or mini Type C. That cable won't work.

That's not the point. Rooting my own phone is fine, but if my mom has this phone, I don't want to deal with roms and rooting with her phone and fixing any issues that come up. You should not have to wait months for an official version update for Android.

But HDMI cable is definitely mandatory - who else can plug-in their CELL PHONE into an HDTV for 720p playback? Geez, what's the point of having this device if you can't show it off!
I recall at a Sprint/HTC/Microsoft launch event of the TP2, the rep's plugged in their TP2's directly into a laptop to show off the capability of running a PowerPoint presentation from the device - like anyone plugs in their smartphones to PC's to say, 'check it out, i'm running a PP presentation from this thing'. Good thing the slides were nothing but text.
If the Evo's HDMI port's are 'standard', then I should be able to find an appropriate cable anywhere. HDMI cables that cost $30-$50 at Best Buy i can get for less than ten bucks elsewhere, same brand, same length.
Does anyone know what type of HDMI cable would be required?
If it's some sort of proprietary cable, at launch you can probably only get it from the carrier, which does rape customers with accessories.
Hopefully it's a 'standard' cable.

Just search for "mini HDMI cable" on Amazon and you'll get plenty of hits for cables under $10. Some way under $10. I would post links, but my newbie status prevents me from doing so.

My bad. The mini HDMI cable is NOT what you want for the EVO 4G. It should be an HDMI cablewith a micro (Type D) connector. Sorry for the mis-information.

Well, I hope they will eventually announce a HDMI adapter. DLNA is no way a replacement for the HDMI out. It is able to play multimedia, but cloning/redirecting the Android UI is a no go with DLNA. Stupid move from HTC

By next year the Desire HD will be replaced with a new generation of phones, so there's really no point having early adoptions of technologies which arent already widespread before the device becomes obsolete.
Its a shame, I'd consider replacing my HD2 with a desire HD because of the improved performance and power consumption, but the lack of HDMI out (which was an attraction of the EVO4G) makes it a less attractive upgrade.

htc knows this is a very good feature, so obviously they will not put it in a phone that they think can sell without it.
htc seem to have a bit of a problem with hitting the right spot. they dont realise that making the ultimate phone will NOT cut into their own sales, but would rather encourage people with similar phones to upgrade again. selling their old phones (hd2 in my case) to someone else (also beneficial as increases htc market share) and also those many people that want a smartphone but have gone with other brands. so many people would switch from samsung, nokia, sony ericsson, iphone etc giving short term AND long term benefits for themselves (and us)
remember the crap we had to take before we got a damn 3.5mm headphone socket back lol.
htc's policies of feature rotation and staggering is the real cause of htc sales eating into themselves

Well, the EVO cap is fixed now.
What remains is... a mystery, that why HTC decided to skimp on that ONE dollar HDMI out part
BTW I prefer the plastic casing of the EVO over metal casing of the dHD. Less prone to scratches, lighter (the casing is lighter, not the actual device with the 4G radio), and plastic never interferes with antennae.
The dHD is super-expensive compared to the EVO (and the HD2). I am inclined to get a HD2 (w/ Android) instead of the dHD.

to be honest. i think only a retard would sell his Evo 4G to DHD. as i personally think the EVO 4G is superior to DHD in many ways its not even funny.
its kinda like the europen/asia/middle eastern people got a stupid low version of the EVO 4G.
1- no 4G
2- No second camera
3- no kick stand
4- no mini hdmi port
are they serious ?
and on top of all that, there are some hardware problems with the DHD it self that needs to be fixed " sensor, touch panel etc".
i think the DHD is a total fail. with all respect to everyone who bought it.

How about a newer gpu? I couldn't run asphalt on my nexus one smoothly (it ran the same chipset as the evo) but it runs just fine on my desire hd. I suppose the bump up in inbuilt memory as well as the increase in ram means it is still stripped down hardware wise? It's a 50% increase in both cases.

DLNA is standard for most tv's today, if you don't have a compatible t.v. for dlna then use a ps3, xbox 360 or a computer to stream it. If you're going to watch something off of a t.v. you're more likely to stream over dlna than carry a cord around with you. Who watches stuff off of their phones anyway, get apple or google tv if your serious about your media
We have an updated chipset, what more could you want?
Sure people talk about the gpu and cpu improvements but it also brings support for more video codecs (we can play divx natively whereas the old snapdragon can't), uses less power and has the 8th generation built in gps engine (its a lot quicker to lock on). Not to mention speeds of up to 14.4mbps HSPA+. "4g" that you are referring to barely reaches 3mbps for most people in america. All of these features are things people use on a daily basis.

yeah most of my calls are really using the front facing camera. specially when i am inside home " my home or friends home" nothing has to do with dating. and no wtf i dont use facebook to date.

sure i can use my DLNA on ps3 or my 360. but the idea of mini hdmi output was if u want to watch at your friends house. why would i plug my mobile to tv if i am at home already and can plug my external hard disk or laptop ?

See when people try to use the kickstand as a valid point for how the EVO is a better phone, you just realise that they are clutching at straws.
Front facing cameras have been available on phone in Europe for near enough 6-7 years, times I or anyone else I know have used one = Zero
The "4G" argument, fair does the US has WiMAX, but it is not fully available all over the US.
The kickstand, come on. Never have I ever thought to myself, know what, I wish my phone had a kickstand so I could watch stuff a little easier.
The DHD has an upgraded CPU and GPU, that right now might not have many more advantages over the EVO, but in the future it will do. When the OS becomes more demanding, the older first generation of Snapdragon devices will become less supported officially for updates etc. That coupled with 256mb more RAM backs that up.
The HDMI port is a bit of a bummer, but for me it is hardly a deal breaker. It would be nice to have, but I can just stream to my PS3 or my TV wirelessly, seems like a fair trade off. Why go digging around the back of my tv which is a cable jungle when I can just do it through wireless?
Anyone who says that the lack of front camera or kickstand is a deal breaker is obviously either a total idiot who just wants more more more regardless of how much they will use it, or is just a spec junkie who wants to brag or look cool online.
The vast majority of phones out there dont have a kickstand or a front facing camera or HDMI out, does that make them bad phones, not at all. It is only recently that people have became fixated by such things, to the point where they are fooling themselves into believing that they matter.
Just my thoughts. To me the DHD is the next step up. I would say it's personal choice, but really the tech is much better with the DHD. I'm in the states, and am much happier with the DHD (even on 2G only. I'm always by wi-fi, so it doesn't matter) than I would be with the Evo. All the things the DHD can do blows the Evo out of the water. Maybe it is just me, but like one poster pointed out, some of the things the DHD can do can't be matched by the Evo. Plus Evo is Sprint only, and I'm on T-Mobile, and plan to stay here. There is no other 4.3 Android for T-Mobile (not that I would care since the DHD rules the world).

1. I'm sorry but the DHD actually has faster hardware than the EVO, end of discussion.
2. I have NEVER seen anyone use a front facing camera on a phone. Why would HTC include one if 90% don't want/need it? It's like demanding a 6,3mm jack on the phone because a couple poor guys have headphones that use a 6,3mm jack even though 95% of people use 3,5mm.
3. A lot of new TV's do have DLNA even though your cheap Bravia doesn't. Again, seriously. How often do you use a HDMI output? Again, I have never seen anyone use it.
Why are you even comparing DHD to the EVO when they are not even intedended to be sold on the same continents for god sake. Besides Android is way better imo than WM which I believe the EVO has. Oh and no, it doesn't have hardware problems except for the first batch of phones, so no, you can't generalize that "the DHD has hardware problems"..

You would rather have a front facing camera than an extra 256mb of RAM?! That's pretty sad tbh. The hdmi output requires a cable to be bought. The DLNA doesn't need anything to be bought unless you have an old tv in which case you will be able to buy the HTC media link.

Do you do phone dating or something? I know what my friends look like and if I'm going to go out and see them I'm not going to video call them. If I want to video call, i'll use Skype for free. PS. Most people haven't got a front facing camera, don't want to, or having got the connection.

DNLA is moving forward, quickly. Don't have DNLA on your TV? Don't be a tool and buy a new TV. Use your common sense and go buy the cable to connect the Desire HD to the TV. Its about 1/1000th the price of a TV.

I think by now you should realise that the DHD is a much better phone than the Evo. Yeah, the Evo is good - but the DHD pushes the boundaries a little further.
Technology can only go so far at times. You'll be back in a few months moaning how the Desire HD is better than the Dual Core HTC's because the battery life is shocking

Seriously, I would defend my phone if I had that one. NOw my touch pro 2 is broken and I ordered the DHD.
There is a lot of competition out there, not only the EVO 4G.
It's just what you prefer. Design?, the evo 4g probably wins. Inner hardware?, the dhd wins. The 4g has more outer hardware: kickstand, 2nd camera, etc.
So it does have more features. But then again, maybe it doesn't because HTC is comming with a lot of new features by software.
It's just what you like the most. When you only think of the phone design, the 4g wins. But then a lot of phones in the past were designed even better (touch pro 2 (A)) Fact is, the DHD has more power under the hood what makes it last a little longer.
Everyone uses their phone diffrently, so for the people who use the kickstand and front camera, go with the EVO 4g. But most people do not really use it, so the DHD probably is the better choice because it will last longer in the future.
The quality of a phone isn't just decided by strenght or just by design, but also the new technology. That's why a newer phone is almost always better then an old one.
in this case, there isn't really a winner.
I don't know if this can be answered yet or not, but I thought I would put it out there.
The Notion Ink Adam has HDMI out, and it outputs the entire screen via HDMI. From dashboard and internet to games and videos, it's all output via HDMI with apparently good audio to boot!
Anyone know if the Xoom is going to be the same? Or is it going to be like my HTC EVO and only output the gallery & YouTube via HDMI?
Might be a small detail, but it's a decider for me. I can really see the advantage of having full HDMI out.
I doubt it's a feature that can be enabled afterwards either, since people have been working on it for about 7 months on the EVO without much success.
This may be something that has to wait until release, but I thought I would check. Someone, somewhere may have mentioned it and I'm just not finding it.
The only official word I've seen is from Moto's press release, which states:
"It allows consumers to experience HD content right on the device, supports 1080p HD video and HDMI output to display content on larger HD screens, and plays video and other rich web content seamlessly with Adobe® Flash® Player."
Doesn't say if the full UI will be output, though that's probably more of a question for Honeycomb in general than the Xoom itself. Frankly, I'd be surprised if the full UI wasn't output natively in Honeycomb - it's such an obvious feature.

What's on stage and what's in retail stores are often very different.
Besides, I thought there was some copy write issue or something regarding HDMI output? Why else would it be disabled for everything except 2 apps on the HTC EVO?
+1 What's shown in a demo can rarely be counted on to be seen in a store. Nothing's set in stone until it's in your hands.
I've wondered about the HDMI-out on the EVO. Maybe it has something to do with that old frame-cap, or perhaps an actual hardware limitation.

If HDMI is properly implemented, it is using HDCP between source (the phone) and sink (the display) which gives an encrypted path for any content that is flagged as requiring this path (i.e. copy protected).
From a practical perspective, clear transmission of HDMI is difficult to capture because of the bandwidth required for HD sources. It's getting more practical with the advent of high throughput SSD devices but it's very expensive to put together a system to capture it.
I can't speak to specifics of the EVO -- I have yet to hook it up to a display.
It would support full HDMI out as all tegra2 devices I have seen so far supports that.

Can someone help me understand the draw of having an HDMI port on a phone or tablet? I can't fathom many uses for that sort of thing. I suppose it'd be nice to have in the rare event I wanted to show some pictures off on the big screen at a family gathering or something, but I just can't imagine too many situations where it would come in handy.
I think hdmi on a portable device is is good for playing hd movies. Download a movie to your pc, transfer to your device, and connect hdmi. More convenient than burning a dvd

Every time that I’ve seen it discussed, the reps mention full HDMI “mirror mode”. Several expanded upon that to say that “whatever you see on the tablet, you’d see on the tv”. Granted these videos were primarily from CES and I got the impression that each of the people I saw talk weren’t terribly confident about what they were saying.

So, no USB charging, it requires it's own unique power cable.
Also, it mentions the HDMI out, and says you can watch videos, display your pictures, and show videos you've recorded all via HDMI. It does not say that it outputs the screen to HDMI like the Adam. This is something I want, and so far it doesn't look too good..

It seems like it's going to be exactly the same as it is on the Droid X, there are apps to allow clone mode output through HDMI on the X. Hopefully they will get a app for the Xoom not to far after it's release.

Huh, wonder why there isn't an app like that for the EVO. The EVO has the same issue, only Gallery and YouTube outputs via HDMI, and nobody has been able to make it do otherwise.

In nearly all cases I have seen with smartphones, what they claim is always more than what you will get even in standby. It is like they test things in safe mode with nothing running. I hope at least 10 hours but I would not be surprised if it is much less. Although I want one bad, I think I am going to wait for the early adopters to report real world numbers first.
I love it when people report they get "Days" on new roms... I cant get "days" if i set ANY of my bloody phones on a table and left it to do NOTHING for the whole time lol.

I'm half tempted to wait on buying a Xoom until after the Netflix information is available. I mean, it's not a huge deal... I have a PS3, which I use for all my Netflix, but in the off-chance that I buy a second TV, I would expect my Xoom to be my primary Netflix delivery device.
