So, Im off on holiday in a couple weeks and after hearing a few horror stories of supprise roaming charges i'd just like to know a few steps to take so not to get hit by a massive bill when i get back.
Im in the UK and will be traveling to greece, Im on Vodafone UK.
Thanks in advance..
Also whats the deal with sending SMS's abroad? It will only be to my friends who im on holiday with, so its not going to be from greece to UK, just within greece, albeit to diferent networks.
again, thanks.

Off the top of my head: -
Install 'NoData', which, whilst I haven't used it myself yet, is supposed to permanently turn off all selected data connections. You presumably need to use the app to renable them when you get back.
Make sure you've not checked any of the roaming options on data-using tabs/apps, i.e. Twitter, Facebook, weather, etc.
Set your email to 'Update manually', and then don't update
Not sure on SMSs, but if you're sending from UK VF to another UK network, you'll pay whatever your tariff has in place for sending/receiving roaming SMSs. Not sure if you can get it, but I recall something along the lines of 'Vodafone Passport', where you can elect to use it and pay one off connection fees then use your inclusive minutes for all calls. Not sure if it covers SMSs as well in some form though. See http://online.vodafone.co.uk/dispatch/Portal/appmanager/vodafone/wrp?_nfpb=true&_pageLabel=templateBlank&pageID=OS_0100
My top tip.........
DONT use Google Maps.......
I managed to add 40 quid to my bill over a weekend just using that and the facebook app
Wont be doing that again lol
Since you have Energy ROM, all the good advices from post #2 you can accomplish just by using Data Controller (located: Start - Internet - Data controller), which is cooked in in Energy ROM. Prior to leaving UK, just disable all the connections that are shown in Data Controller. That also includes MMS connections (Note that you will not be able to sen/receive MMS).
Once you are back in UK, just enable all the connections in Data Controller.
thanks very much for the help guys.
xx
or,you can just search for "no data in roaming", a small util which will automatically disable all data connection when it will find that you're out of your original network.
Tested while driving from UK to Poland, with both: O2 UK (way: UK->France-> Holland-> Germany-> Poland) & Polish Orange (opposite direction) SIM cards.

I used NoData - it stops telephone network data connections, which means you can still use WiFi.
If you are sending an SMS to a mate on holiday with you, then you will be charged a roaming SMS charge (which may be about 40p). Your mate will no get charged for receiving the SMS (and visa versa). What actually happens is the SMS is sent back to the UK, passed onto your mate's number and transfered back to him in Greece.
It is similar for phone calls between you. The caller will be charged at European roaming rate and the receiver will also be charged at European receiving roaming rates.
no need to use any external cabs like nodata.
Nothing simpler than manila settings>wireless settings>menu>connection>advanced>select networks and then make sure that all entries in there read "office network", that is, it will efficiently make the phone unable to use any carrier internet connection
Disable VoiceMail. You get charged for the call to your phone and for the diversion to your mailbox.
I avoid data charges by turning off roaming in each built-in application. Third party programs might still use data so the advice above is good.
To avoid silly bills, I use a PAYG SIM. I can't spend more than I have on the SIM. Topping up isn't always possible abroad. I can buy data from T-mobile from £1 for 3Mb. Calls and SMS cost extra even with add-ons because they originate abroad. Note that MMS are sometimes cheaper than SMS, especially if you have a lot to say eg. Switzerland: SMS £0.40, MMS £0.20 on my tarrif.
Seconding the Data Controller option. I used this on a recent trip overseas, and it kept my data connections killed. I was still able to use the phone over wifi, without any problems.

Hi all, I hope someone can help with this,
I have tried to all O2 using 100 (but this keeps getting disconnected automatically) so I have to call as 0845 number which uses my minutes + I was waiting 30 minutes to speak to someone and when i eventually did get through they hung up (I am well Pi***d off with o2). Anyhow
I want to connect to the net using GPRS, however no GPRS symbol is displayed and if i try, i get a message saying "No moden at above number" any help would be great.
Cheers
Matt
Right, couple of things to suggest.
Firstly (and I know this sounds stupid)....O2 have recently installed new call centre handling "things" which SHOULD route your call more efficiently but as they have been put in by IBM (also, responsible for more recent "good inovations" in O2) the bits aren't working v well! - trust me as I speak from experience and "from the horses mouth" - I work for them!
So chill when you do get through....the staff on the phones are getting major grief from customers, dealers and fellow staff members (mainly store staff) because it's taking ages......It's not their fault!!
Anyway, back to your problem.....you haven'y said whether you got a new connection or an upgrade.....if it's the latter did you ahve GPRS on your previous phone and did it work?
If it's a new connection then GPRS hasn't been provisioned for some reason (although it can tkae 48 hrs max from connection to go through), same goes if it was an upgrade and you never used GPRS on the old phone.
Give me the answeres to these questions and I'll give you my best guess!
Mike
Check settings
I use this site for settings:
http://www.filesaveas.com/index.html
I would also suggest that you check that GPRS has actually been enabled by O2 for you. I had problems with MMS not being enabled although I HAD asked for it.
Thanks Mike for your responce, and I promise not to go ape at your colleagues.
I have a new account with O2, connected today, however seems strange that it could take upto 48hrs to get GPRS active, I was recently with ORANGE and as soon as I activated the phone (a SPV) the GPRS was active there and then. Ah well I will wait the 48hrs and hopefully it will come active sometime soon.
As an O2 employee, you may be able to assist on this query. As a paymonthly customer on O2 400, I am supposted to call 100 from my XDAII to call CS, but when I do this I get disconnected automatically as if the number is dead, any ideas?
Many thanks for your help.
Matt
An update on the aboe. I have managed to sort this problem out, I did a soft reset and when rebooted I noticed the phone settings were on Germany, changed it to UK and GPRS works fine.
Matt
for anyone searching with this problem
MODEM NOT FOUND AT DIALED NUMBER
1. phone CS on 0845 and make sure GPRS is on! (APN provisioning for mobile web access (you can 'check' on the 100 number, but they can't turn it on for you)
2. 3.30pm is the 'switch over' time, so soft reboot after this time each day (
up to 24hrs) ...... phone again if still not on !
3. GERMANY is default if you go to MY XDA - connections. it will always be on Germany. but the wizzard should of set it to UK when you first set it
Do you have the correct settings for wap over gprs, email over gprs using O2 payg sim with free gprs pages and wap.
Is there any portal to get the settigs to the O2 phone directly?
Hi all,
I bought a MDA PRO on the t-mobile tariff webnwalk that give 40MB of web browsing per month. The adverts and customer services specifically say web browsing or internet browsing.
I saw in a post the other day, someone saying that that is only for GPRS and NOT UMTS (3G).. Now is this true? The prebuilt mda pro doesn't give you the option to choose one over the other and there are no tariff plan details that say how much 3G data would cost..
P
Hi,
i am a german t-mobile customer and here it doesn´t matter if you are connected using gprs or 3g.
Would make absolutly no sense, because the device automatically switches to the fastet network available and it is not possible to use gprs when i am in a area where 3g is available.
The only important factor for the bill is the volume.

You can change this behaviour by modifying the registry keys.
Yes, I am on web n walk in the UK and it's both.
40mb / month gives you just over a meg a day.
Now, if you buy/obtain the pocket MSN software, then you get your hotmail back (woohoo) but MSN messenger sucks bandwidth like there's no tomorrow - nearly a meg in a few hours.
Agile messenger doesn't use anywhere near as much data, and just in case the bandwidth usage was related to 3G, I went into the phone settings and where you have an 'auto' set for networks, choose GSM and it sticks to only GPRS. I later tested MSN messenger on GPRS and it still sucks data like a mofo.
For general purpose use, GPRS is fine and obviates the issue where the software/OS pratts about switching between networks. Web browsing is fine with images switched off and all is good again.
I am currently using about 3-400k/day which means I will need to have a blow-out web session at the end of the month to use my entitlement (which is better than having to pay excess data charges cos I sucked too much data over the month).
End result is the same - I am connected to MSN through agile and keep in touch with friends during the day, and I get hotmail integration to the messaging apps.
All slightly OT to this thread, but I thought I would share my experience in case it helps.

Great line, made me laugh  Looks like I should give Agile a go then. Didn't realise it was lighter than MSN.
And back on topic, I'm not on Web 'n' Walk yet (really should get round to switching...) but I spoke to a lovely lady at T-Mobile for ages trying to figure out which tarrif would suit me best, and at some point in the conversation she definitely told me that 3G data is charged at exactly the same rate as GPRS data, and the 40 meg allowance covers both.
Excellent!
We'll I've now done the registry fix to t-mobile Internet option to make sure it really is ALWAYS ON.
I'm in Spain next week and how I can use GPRS from there. You know which partner networks I should try it on and how much it'll cost me?
I've tried t-mobile and they give me different answers from 'you can't use gprs out in Spain' to 'it'll cost you at least £7 p MB'
??
Had my stag do in Barcelona earlier this year and I was connected to Movistar for the weekend. GPRS rates were (from memory) about £7.50 per Mb which is what T-Mobile's standard GPRS rates were at the time (not sure what they are now?) I was already over my allowance for the month, so I dont know if my allowance would have been used up instead of having to pay the higer price (doubt it though!)

No Ones talking about changing.
The point is I wanted to make sure that using UMTS and GPRS doesn't change the billing.
Also, whe you go to another country you have to Roam and I also wanted to know how much that would cost me using gprs? (oh In Spain..) 8)

I used T-Mob roaming in Australia via other cell companies and it cost me 7.50/meg I think.
And, weirdest of all, even tho I had T-Mob GPRS setup for the UK, I didn't change settings, it just worked over there (or appeared to). That was on a SE P910i tho.
That's damn expensive. How can they justify it? It's not like voice calls where you're paying for the foreign country to the uk and then from the uk to where-ever..You're just using the local network to hop onto their gprs network and the web...
It's about thime this planet got to grips with modern technology..Seem that the public think further ahead than the companies...
£7.50 Per Meg seems like the general consensus then.
Coincidentally (or maybe not?) that's how much T-Mobile charge even in the UK for either PAYG customers, or contract customers with no bolt-ons. (unless they've updated the costs recently)
As for the settings working abroad, GPRS connects via an access point such as "general.t-mobile.com" which is the same the world over. Much like a web address. Each network operator just monitors the traffic to your device, and bills accordingly. Obviously if your abroad, the local network operator bills your home operator and they mark it up 10000000% and bill you in turn.
(At least that's how I understand it)
Call 150 and the guy will tell you that it's for GPRS only. I think he might not have the proper authority of saying it, but then again, as long as this guy is a quotable source i.e. 150-guy; so the fact stands until someone made a 150 call and tell us otherwise
is there only way to get the number of MB currently downloaded with a *#XX# shortcuts ?
same for the number of minutes.. it's a bit pain in the bottom to have to call 150 (especially when you get the help yourself options)

As I said before, the person I spoke to said otherwise. Conflicting information from the 150 crew then...I'll have to check through my new bill carefully once I've switched to Web 'n' Walk 200, but 3G data has never been charged differently to GPRS on my current tarrif (Relax 200 + 55Mb Data add-on).

I also have web'n'walk ('flat rate' only for GPRS) so i dont want to use UMTS.
What do you have to change in the registry to use GPRS when UMTS is available??
There is no need to force the MDA Pro to use GPRS on T-Mobile. With the web 'n' walk tarrifs the 40mb is for use on BOTH UTMS (3G) or GPRS.
I can confirm this as I myself am on web 'n' walk 200.
I only ever use 3G on Web'n'Walk 200 (cause I live and work in London), and I haven't been charged for my first 40 Megs yet so no-one on this tarrif should worry!
If you are concerned, sign up on the T-Mobile website for "My T-Mobile". I've finally gotten around to doing this myself, and now I can track my spending easily (even from my JasJar, if I so desire) and change my account options etc, without having to go through the Service Centre every time.
And for those people who have to pay for calls to 150 because they're on a webshop account, you needn't ring 150 ever again (probably!)
Maybe i have a different web'n'walk. I'm from holland and here we have 'pocket internet total' 9,50/month and no time or mb limit. One problem, the t-mobile site says its only for GPRS!
But there is a chance that UMTS is also inclusif, and t-mobile just forgot to mansion that, because i have no charges for umts sofar(MyTmobile)...

This has not been my experience when I used Messenger on my old imate JAM - must test this, cheers. Is Agile Messenger better in other ways too?
Hi everyone,
I've just got my jasjar this week and already used this great forum to assist me with few issues, so thankyou.
now, 3 network in Australia, to my limited knowledge, as the following networks.
3Services - which is limited 'intranet' with some free content and some paid content BUT provide imap4 e-mail address for $3 a month.
and
3netAccess - access to the internet charged at 4c a kb !!!
now, on my jasjar, I managed to get the 3netAccess going as a 3G\GPRS network, however, this is too expensive for me in order to use it for e-mail only.
the question is, has anyone managed to get the 3Services (i.e. 3 intranet) working on the JJ? has anyone managed to get the three imap e-mail address going?
thanks,
i just use telstra and it all works ok, i have enough email accounts to keep track of without adding more (activesync, personal email, hotmail, gmail) plus text and mms i am getting all messaged out....
but 3g works for me fine
Hi,
I have been trialing Vodafone on my Dopod 900 here in Sydney. However testing has been limited while I tinker around for an ideal setup.
Though there 2nd level support is great. Was able to walk me through the whole process of setup once they understood it was running WM5. However I haven't tested PIX yet.
With Vodafone, on prepaid you only have WAP access, to get full mobile broadband you have to go onto a billing plan, but I'm not locked into any terms.
I'm curious what pain did you go through with 3, or did you just buy a phone and plan and used the SIM?
Regards
Michael
it was really simple, told secretary I wanted 3g access, and 2 days later I had it. I think it stays under the gprs corporate access rates.
I don't pay the bill directly, just reduces the profits available! I might look at the actual costs, cause I am only on the $5 gprs rates with 2.2c per kb over 250kb (very expensive and doesn't take much to go through250kb)
3g video until june is charged at mobile phone rates but don't know anybody using video phones.
sorry not much help rweally
by the way using telstra which I thing is using the 3 network.
note the tricks and shinanigans with128kb (video phone aspeed given) versus 384kb (data and internet access speeds actually available) I think they gave me 128kb but haven't checked.
to - michaelg
hi michaelg, yes, I just bought a Jasjar and have a 3 sim for over two and a half years now, so popped the SIM in and it works fine...have set it up on 3netaccess which is the more expensive network though...unfortunately no one could help me with my question.
cheers,
Ghoz,
Have you looked at 3 Australia's email pack? $3/month to send+recieve unlimited emails (free if you only want to recieve) - only problem is, it's for your 3 email address only - but that doesn't bother me, as I just forward all my normal emails to my 3 address, and voila! (another bonus is, any email sent with an "urgent" flag also gets an sms notification sent to you)
Hope I put this in the right area.
I will be traveling to the Czech Republic this July and am wanting to use my unlocked TMobile MDA (US) while there. I have looked at a couple of the carriers for plans that may fit my needs but I am not entirly sure I understand how exactly they work.
So here is what I am looking for. I will be there for 2 weeks. I am needing limited cell, mostly data. I am planning on using the data for VOIP built in to WM6 connected to my Asteriks server if possible. If I can't get that working I will be using the data as a modem to connect via soft phone. I was looking in to Pay AS You Go type services but with the terminology - tariffs? - I got a little confused. Now if data won't work for me obviously I will need more cell mins.
Can anyone help fill me in on what I might be looking for? I know of only 3 carriers for the country so am thinking my choices are limited - TMobile, O2 and Vodofone.
not sure about Czech Republic
but many places you can just buy a prepaid sim
with various amounts on in a convientstore or supermarket
and use it in any phone
Right, I have read up and understand that pre paid is the way to go, but does this normally include data service as well. And is there a service more reliable than the other. Just because I use TMobile in the US doesn't mean I will have the same luck with them out there so I will go with whoever seems to have the best service\price.
I used my UK tmobile pay as you go for data in Switzerland and France last february. It worked fine and wasn't all that expensive as far as I remember. I just collected andsent email a couple of times a day though and I used about £10 in a week.
Yes, all 3 Czech carriers (TMobile, O2, Vodofone) sell prepaid SIM cards, and I think that all of them support data/internet services (at least GPRS/EDGE). Vodafone's prices are 0,68 CZK/kB for WAP and 0,060 CZK/kB for generic internet (which is what you are interested in, I guess), other carriers' prices are probably very similar.
With O2 there is prepaid data nonstop tarif, it supports also 3G. Just go to one of O2 shops, some of them may speak english
I second the o2 suggestion. I recently took the train to Praha CR and my 02 dervice did not let me down. Problem sometimes with prepaid is they want to see documents...like residency requirements..at least here in Germany. I would get a calling card and call ahead...things like that can throw everything off.
no problem to buy prepaid card anywhere, no documents needed. you can buy it on most petrol stations, post offices - everywhere. I will give you further info about pricing as soon as i recieve it...
nocturne lives in Czech Republic so I would avoid going there.
So, i made some search about current situation.
t-mobile is the best fitting solution for you.
They offer prepaid sim card called "Twist Internet" - for 850CZK (about 35USD), you can use unlimited data connection (GPRS, EDGE or G4)
this card can be bought in every t-mobile shop, there are many of these shops in all cities larger than 10000 habitants - so it's almost everywhere.
you need no papers to buy this card, if yu will not spend another 850CZK, it simply will not work after a month, no more payments necessary.
Calling pricing is hard to choose. It depends on how much will you call and where. Try to specify it better...
If you have more questions, feel free to contact me...

Hey, i'm currently using WM2003 on an xda2i.
What is exceptionally frustrating is if I want to use wifi internet, I have to to to
Start-> Settings-> Connections-> connections-> advanced and change BOTH drop downs to WORK NETWORK.l If I want to use GPRS internet I have to do the same but select MY ISP in the first drop down. Switching between communication methods is extremely annoying :S
Also, if I connect to GPRS and leave it on it auto disconnects quite quickly, (10-15 mins) and then the phone needs to be reset inorder to reconnect.
My question might seems illy, but can anyone tell me if things work PROPERLY on pater versions of windows mobile and on the blackstone as I've never used anything except WM2003.
Thank you for your help, I WANT this phone.
.........Ib a n e
The problem you describe is not present on my Touch (Elf) so I'm sure it's been fixed by now. In fact, I didn't have the same problem even on my Exec (Universal) three years ago.
Fantastic! thank you for the input. I'm slowly realising how much I am putting up with in my 2i. I love it, but I need a change, and I don't really want an iPhone.
Might sell my SOUL to afford a sim free Touch HD and this was a stumbling block.
Thanks for clearing it up
I'm also just wondering whether I can justify buying SIM-free and a SIM-only contract from O2, against the cost of a phone on contract.
SIM-free for 18 months:
Phone - £500
SIM card - £20 per month (including unlimited mobile web)
Total - £860
On contract for 18 months:
Phone - £100 (guess based on Touch Pro)
Monthly cost - £35 (including unlimited mobile web)
Total - £730
There's a huge difference in cost and I'm not sure I can justify it just to get one today instead of waiting a couple of months until O2 release the Touch HD on contract (assuming they do). But I really really want this phone. (In fact, mainly I really really want to leave Orange and go back to O2, whose network actually works where I live.)
To add further info to your original question, I've set up seven email accounts in my Touch and they check for new mail periodically (some accounts every two hours, some every 30 mins). If I've turned Wi-Fi on then the connection happens through Wi-Fi but if I'm out of range or Wi-Fi is off then the phone will automatically and silently connect to GPRS and check emails that way. I never need to touch anything. Once it's connected to GPRS it stays connected for hours with no problems.
The only slight inconvenience is that to send an email the two connection methods (GPRS and Wi-Fi) have different SMTP requirements. I can't send emails through Orange's SMTP server while connected to a Wi-Fi network, and I can't send through my ISP's SMTP server (through my home Wi-Fi connection for example) when I'm connected to the internet with GPRS. But this isn't a limitation of Windows Mobile; my laptop is just the same. My solution was to set up my own SMTP server through which I can authenticate to send emails regardless of how my devices connect to the Internet.
mm... yes hadn't thought about the SMTP but I have experienced this before. It is a slight annoyance, but a necessary one I guess without setting up your own server.
I'm glad to heard of your good checking experiences with the email.
mmm.... i'm not a fan of buying contract and using contracts. I prefer to try to buy SIM FREE outright, and if possible Avail of a simplicity contract with vodafone, which only requires one month warning to leave.
The reason I choose Vodafone is because O2 block MSN messenger... and I'm unsure about skype (not that I use it a lot, but I don't like being TOLD by my network what I can and can't use.)
I have no idea about vodafone 3g hsdpa reception though, might have to look into it.
Yeh, I swap from northern ireland, to southern ireland frequently, and as I am currently looking for permanent work, I don't know exactly where I'll end up....thus, contracts are not suitable for me right now.
I did see the Touch HD in a swiss shop for about 469 sterling. think it was www.digitec.com
I've emailed them to see how much shipping would be.
