Try *22899
Whenever an Android phone isn't activated, its always going to report it as roaming. The call should still go through.

Hey everyone! I have been having a problem with my Samsung Epic. I am in NYC and recently they have turned on the 4G within the city limits. It was working great last week and I was getting a decent 4G connection (8down, 4up). Now yesterday When I went to activate the 4G radio on my phone it wasn't turning on. The 4G button stays grey and it says its turning on but it never turns green. When I go into the 4G settings its grayed out but its says "turning on..." 3g stays connected during this. Wifi works when I turn that on, but I notice back in the 4g settings menu 4g still says "Turning on".. it doesn't even time out. It completely killed my battery after 20 mins.
I tried a factory reset.. didn't work... Tried the Odin full reset (stock everything).. No dice. I never rooted the phone or did anything to it except install Juice Defender (which cause a whole bunch of problems). Has anyone else had this problem? I am within my 30days so i'm thinking of exchanging my phone.. any ideas??? Thanks in advance!!!
I'm having the same problem

My buddy had the same issue on his Epic. Had to trade it in for a new one.

I had the same problem, get to a sprint store and get your phone replaced. I'm guessing it is a radio problem. May be fixable if the sprint techs actually did something more then just resetting to stock.
Flash the DG27 radio then upgrade to DI07 again. Could also force your phone to re-provision itself.
http://firon.net/xda/modem.d700.tar here's the modem, flash it with Odin as Phone.
This is a longshot, but I've been messing around with a few settings menu and I saw an interesting WiMAX setting.
Goto the dialer, input ##3282#.
Goto WiMAX, enter your MSL code. (find your MSL code by opening an adb shell to your device, use the command "getprop" once in the shell, scroll up and look for a line that says "[ril.MSL]: [??????]")
See what it says under ACTIVATED and REALM, should say "ACTIVATED:TRUE" and "REALM:sprintpcs.com", respectively. If it doesn't that might be where your problem is. Tell a level 2 sprint tech.
Next, try to goto WORK MODE, in there you can set your work mode, mine is at 2 and 4G is working fine, I wish I could tell you what work mode 0,1, & 3 did differently, but I can't locate much info on the net. I'll update this if I find out later...
Hope this can be of some help to you.
My phone is doing the same thing. I don't live in a 4g area yet but I would like to be able to use it when I travel. If there is no 4g service, should the 4g still turn green?
Is anyone else having this problem with the atrix? It is minorly annoying. If I go to an area with no data service, I cannot get data back on until i reset the phone.
The same goes for service, if i go to an area without service, then to an area with service, I must restart the phone in order to get it working.

I've been having a similar issue, I've found that turning off all the radios, then opening the browser and attempting to load a new page, THEN going back to home and re-enabling the radios and opening the browser AGAIN, and putting a new link into the address bar it will reset.
TOTAL PITA... reminds me of WinMo6.
this MAY be due to not having set up the new SIM card that came with the phone and using the one that we previously had... not sure though.
I'm going to trouble shoot it some more over the weekend see if I can get it all sorted out.
Hmmm okay ill try that when it happens again, im not sure if it deals with sim card. Im using my previous sim card which dates back to cingular days

You shouldn't open just another thread there is already one that deals with the same problem: http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=967125
I have an HTC Hero that keeps entering "Emergency Callback Mode" for what seems to be no reason at all. It mostly happens as soon as I answer an incoming call but also randomly in between.
This mode kills all data conenctions and prevents outgoing calls for 5:00. But, even if I say cancel, or wait the 5 minutes, it still stays on and I have to reset the device. It usually resolves itself after 45 mins or so. It happens once or twice a day.
I have researched the issue on google and I have found very little information about this problem. On some phones, this mode is enabled immediately after calling 911 to allow rescuers to call you back and locate you via GPS. I have never called 911 on this device.
I am currently running Cyanogen 7.1 RC2 ROM but I had the same issue on many different ROMS I tried so its not related to that.
on baseband 2.42.01.04.27. Maybe I should try downgrading it? How can I do that safely?
I really don't want to try reverting back to a stock ROM...
EDIT:
I think I posted this in the wrong forum, mod please move, sorry.
Hmmmm........so a complete doesn't solve the issue? And when you say ''sense'', does that mean with sense, it doesn't happen, but with the other Roms it does?
Try updating your radio to the latest .29
Yea its Me Again With the
Modified Hero
I just upgraded to the lastest baseband and it's still doing it.
I also figured out I can trigger the problem immediately by going to mobile network settings and changing my roaming preferences.
I should probably not that I recently repaired this phone and used QPST service programming tool to copy settings over from a touch pro 2 to the Hero. Could there maybe have been a wrong setting from the TP2 that is affecting the CDMA on this phone??
Just did a PRL update. No luck...
Did a succesful over-the-air profile and PRL update. Same problem...

Sounds like it. Is there no way to put everything back to default manufactured settings?

I am considering using a stock RUU to completely wipe the phone to factory settings, but am trying to exhaust all my other options first so I won't have to re-root it and set everything up again... I'm almost at that point though.

!!!!!!!!!!!
FIXED IT SUCKAS.
Did a ##786# which reset all the CDMA settings, then re-did my NAM and data profile settings and it works. Go figure. Doing the ##786# on this phone also retained nearly everything including meid, baseband, recovery, and ROM. All it did was fix the problem. Awesome.
I still have no idea what was causing this to begin with, it was driving me crazy. Hopefully this thread will be helpful to someone else who has the issue.
On a side note, how dumb is this emergency mode?? So you call 911, then you can't call anyone else after that?? What if you need to call your wife and kids to say you love them one more time?! Haha.
Awesome!!!!!! Glad it's fixed. Now I'll just star this just in case it happens to me.
So I just bought the shift the other day on ebay, and I was trying to activate it over the phone with sprint and every time they would try to get the data thing to work it would just give is the Error:1012. They even had me do the hard reset and everything. We were able to get phone calls and text to work along with the internet.
Any ideas on what to do guys?
I had a hell of a time getting my Shift activated at first. Calls and text worked fine and so did wifi but no mobile data. After 3 calls to Sprint and a couple hard resets it turned out the problem was I hadn't turned off my old phone first.

When you say your phone wasn't off you mean it wasn't deactivated or like it wasn't powered off?
Also whenever I do hard reset for some reason there is a weird phone number already in it. I don't know if that happened to you too.

Powered off. And no weird phone number that I recall.

Hmmm weird. My phone was off when I tried to activate my phone. I'll just go to a sprint store I guess.
Went to the sprint store and they activated it thankfully
Sometimes it takesan hour or two to activate the new phone. Usually I just wait it out.

How do I turn the Roaming Guard off for Voice? When I tell the phone I want it to roam for data and voice, it automatically turns on the roaming guards for both. However, I cannot uncheck them because they are greyed out/unselectable. When I make a data connection while roaming, it warns me but gives me a check box to check if I don't want to see that message again. I check the box and go back to roaming guards and the greyed out Data guard is then turned off.
However, when I make or recieve phone calls while roaming, I get the roaming guard warning but no prompt or check box to turn the message off in the future.
Do others see the roaming guards as greyed out as well? Is there anyway to force that warning off? I'm not rooted yet as I'm still inside my 14 day exchange window.
They are greyed out for me as well. I haven't made a call yet while roaming, but I did get the same option for data that you got.
Thanks. Well that sucks if we're not able to turn it off! I just got off the line with Sprint and they tell me the roaming gaurds should not be greyed out. They could not confirm it on an S4 as they didn't have one handy (!), but did confirm it on an S3. I make a lot of phone calls while roaming, so this could be a deal breaker for me on the S4. That would suck as I'm pretty pleased with the phone otherwise.
How about folks with the new MDL update? Can you tell us if the roaming guards are greyed out on that level also?
Are you speaking about the GSM section?
I have 3 sections in my Roaming Guard, Domestic CDMA, International CDMA and GSM. I'm concerned with the Domestic CDMA, but all of mine are greyed out except for Outgoing SMS under the International CDMA section.

Thanks. But I do not know what an RTN Reset is. I searched the forum, but didn't find any hits for that term.
So before you did the reset, those were greyed out? And the reset made them selectable? If so, it'd be interesting to know what is causing this issue.

Yes it was grayed out. Call sprint get your msl then on the dial pad press ##786# RTN menu then select reset enter msl and enjoy.

Alright then... i might just wait untill i install a custom rom so that way it'll be as easy as possible
I believe I found the culprit. I have been checking the roaming guard as I rebuilt my phone. All was fine until I did the clear data and force stop on the Google Services Framework. I did that a few minutes ago to try and force the OTA update (which I've not been able to do) and now my roaming guard selections are greyed out again. Damn. Another hard reset.
I'm not rooted, so what is the best way to backup my phone's apps so they get restored at the push of a button?
Confirm RTM worked for me as well
I had the same problem with my Galaxy S4 (Sprint) and I can confirm that performing that the RPM fixes it as long as you perform it when you're NOT on roaming. I'm pretty sure this bug comes out when you initially activate your device while on roaming. Regardless, here are the steps again with a little extra detail:
Call Sprint Customer Service and ask for your MTL code
Use helium/carbon or another app to backup your AppData if your phone isn't rooted.
Open the Dialer app
Press ##786#
Enter your MTL code
Press "Reset"
Press OK and let the device perform factory reset.
When it's totally started up again (after the Samsung and Google sign-ins), download helium
Connect your phone to your computer and launch helium/carbon desktop app
Once the app says Helium enabled, restore all your programs and their respective app data. Note this works for NON-ROOTED devices

You don't need to use your MTL code. Just do a Factory Reset and you're good to go.
