[Q] Turn off Roaming Guard for phone calls - Sprint Samsung Galaxy S 4 Q&A, Help & Troubleshoot

How do I turn the Roaming Guard off for Voice? When I tell the phone I want it to roam for data and voice, it automatically turns on the roaming guards for both. However, I cannot uncheck them because they are greyed out/unselectable. When I make a data connection while roaming, it warns me but gives me a check box to check if I don't want to see that message again. I check the box and go back to roaming guards and the greyed out Data guard is then turned off.
However, when I make or recieve phone calls while roaming, I get the roaming guard warning but no prompt or check box to turn the message off in the future.
Do others see the roaming guards as greyed out as well? Is there anyway to force that warning off? I'm not rooted yet as I'm still inside my 14 day exchange window.

They are greyed out for me as well. I haven't made a call yet while roaming, but I did get the same option for data that you got.

Thanks. Well that sucks if we're not able to turn it off! I just got off the line with Sprint and they tell me the roaming gaurds should not be greyed out. They could not confirm it on an S4 as they didn't have one handy (!), but did confirm it on an S3. I make a lot of phone calls while roaming, so this could be a deal breaker for me on the S4. That would suck as I'm pretty pleased with the phone otherwise.
How about folks with the new MDL update? Can you tell us if the roaming guards are greyed out on that level also?

Are you speaking about the GSM section?

I have 3 sections in my Roaming Guard, Domestic CDMA, International CDMA and GSM. I'm concerned with the Domestic CDMA, but all of mine are greyed out except for Outgoing SMS under the International CDMA section.

Thanks. But I do not know what an RTN Reset is. I searched the forum, but didn't find any hits for that term.
So before you did the reset, those were greyed out? And the reset made them selectable? If so, it'd be interesting to know what is causing this issue.

Yes it was grayed out. Call sprint get your msl then on the dial pad press ##786# RTN menu then select reset enter msl and enjoy.

Alright then... i might just wait untill i install a custom rom so that way it'll be as easy as possible

I believe I found the culprit. I have been checking the roaming guard as I rebuilt my phone. All was fine until I did the clear data and force stop on the Google Services Framework. I did that a few minutes ago to try and force the OTA update (which I've not been able to do) and now my roaming guard selections are greyed out again. Damn. Another hard reset.
I'm not rooted, so what is the best way to backup my phone's apps so they get restored at the push of a button?

Confirm RTM worked for me as well
I had the same problem with my Galaxy S4 (Sprint) and I can confirm that performing that the RPM fixes it as long as you perform it when you're NOT on roaming. I'm pretty sure this bug comes out when you initially activate your device while on roaming. Regardless, here are the steps again with a little extra detail:
Call Sprint Customer Service and ask for your MTL code
Use helium/carbon or another app to backup your AppData if your phone isn't rooted.
Open the Dialer app
Press ##786#
Enter your MTL code
Press "Reset"
Press OK and let the device perform factory reset.
When it's totally started up again (after the Samsung and Google sign-ins), download helium
Connect your phone to your computer and launch helium/carbon desktop app
Once the app says Helium enabled, restore all your programs and their respective app data. Note this works for NON-ROOTED devices

You don't need to use your MTL code. Just do a Factory Reset and you're good to go.

so i factory reset my phone, turn it back on and it wants me to program my phone again with *228. Problem is for some reason now my phone is stuck in roaming and it won't let it activate, any idea why it would do this?

Try *22899
Whenever an Android phone isn't activated, its always going to report it as roaming. The call should still go through.

Hands Free Activation boot loop

Running rooted stock MF9
Hands free Activation runs, says it activates, trys to update the PRL. It says it fails and that device will restart. Reboots and does the same thing. How can I break this?
I can't make phone calls or receive texts. I tried a factory reset, still doing it.
Any help?

Not sure if this will help, but I found this on Sprint's website:
Manual programming
Only use manual programming if both hands free activation and one touch programming did not complete successfully on your Samsung Galaxy S®4.
Manually programming your device requires a 6-digit programming code and a 10-digit MSID. If your device was activated via www.sprint.com/activate, these codes may be found in the phone activation confirmation email or on the programming instructions page displayed after the activation was processed.
If this is a new line of service or you don't have these codes, make an appointment at a nearby Sprint store for assistance getting your device programmed.
From the home screen, tap Phone.
Dial ## followed by the 6-digit programming code followed by #. For example, ##123456#.
Tap Edit.
Tap MDN.
Enter the 10-digit phone number (MDN).
Tap OK.
Tap MSID.
Enter the 10-digit MSID.
Tap OK.
Tap the Back key.
Tap Done.
Your device restarts.
From the home screen, tap Apps.
Scroll to and tap Settings.
Tap More.
Scroll to and tap System Update.
Tap Update Profile.
After the update is complete, tap OK.
You've now completed manual programming.

I activated my phone at a Sams Cub, so SOL on that front. I'm gonna Odin complete stock tomorrow, and take it to the sprint store.
I didn't even do anything to the phone. Forgot to plug it in last night, and put it on the charger in the morning and it was doing that.

it always comes out "HANDS FREE ACTIVATION" and is not activated .. like I can erase that since I do not live in United States ..
or could activate it from my house (Chile) ... I hope to help please ..
have kind of the same problem with my htc m8 for sprint i already root it and it sads hands free activation then check for prl said success then the phone restarts then does the same thing over and over and over
One thing that SHOULD solve this is manually inputting your MDN and MIN in some kind of CDMA tool. If you've done a ##72786# or if the phone somehow freaked out and did it, you're going to need the carrier partition from another L720 to load onto yours. Sorry, the answers aren't quite "easy"

D800 Will not send SMS! Only receives!

Hello everyone. I would like to thank anyone who helps in advance, and also to the devs who work so hard.
Anyhow, the problem first surfaced on CM11 with a recent nightly. All of a sudden, my SMSes would not send. So I tried different apps, hangouts, stock SMS, gosms, etc. Nothing works, the message just times out.
Next I tried restoring my known good working rooted stock nandroid. It all of a sudden would not send SMS with that either! Then I tried wiping my entire device, and doing a clean flash of only the 12/17 CM11 and the newest PA Gapps, and I did not restore anything. Still not sending!!! Please help, did I break my device??
I doubt that you broke it so relax. Check your APN settings. Maybe restore original stock ROM and then reflash whatever you want. Before you wiped it all I would have tried Textra. Good luck.
This happened to me about two days ago, I was installing and reinstalling Paranoid Android on my AT&T LG G2 to the point where somehow I was unable to send SMS.
The funny thing is I could receive Texts & Picture messages from others, and I could send Picture messages BUT NOT send texts or reply to texts.
I tried other 3rd party messaging apps - I even went back to stock but my text messages wouldn't send! I went to my local AT&T store and they replaced my SIM card for free and everything was normal, even now it's working just great.
I even tried imputing the SMSC number again but i'd get an update error message.
Trust me I've tried everything and I couldn't get it to work, but I went to the AT&T store and all they did was switch my SIM card for a new one and everything was back to normal.

Yes, calls did come in and I could make calls. Data worked as well (still connected to LTE). Everything worked except mysteriously texts wouldn't send.
I wonder if it's something to do with flashing ROMS so many times to the point where we don't let the ROM settle or maybe certain ROMS 'embed' some file that confuses the SIM card to cause it to malfunction?

I really hope that it is the SIM and not my EFS, because when I restored to my known good Rooted stock Nandroid, EFS was included in that and it still didn't work. I have contacted AIO for a SIM but it's gonna be a few days. I wanted to get one anyway because I feel my cut-down SIM was negatively affecting my signal reception. I could be completely wrong in that, but still. I can do EVERYTHING except send SMS. So weird!

Is my SMSC supposed to have those extra numbers at the end? I even had AIO "refresh/provision" me to no avail. And while I was on the line with her, she wanted me to remove the 3 extra numbers. But they persist! I have included a photo so you can see what I mean.
Further (and less importantly), is anyone else having an issue with KK where the '*#*#4636#*#*' menu takes forever to show up after entering the code?
Thanks again to anyone who's made suggestions!

I got that too but I still was unable to sent text messages. I also tried erasing the numbers and just adding the SMSC without any extra numbers and I would get an Update error.
Right now, this is what I have on my phone (it's fixed and no issues sending or receiving)

Thank you for showing me that. However, unless you are also on Aio, I don't think ours should be the same. I'm awaiting a new SIM from Aio to rule that out, so I will report back after I try the new SIM.

Razr M stuck on 3g!

So a few days ago, my Razr M decided to stop using 4g, and is now stuck using 4g. Even after returning to stock 4.4.2, this is still an issue. Any insight as to what's wrong with my phone?
Had this happen once I tried a bunch of stuff... I can't remember but I think I actually just let it die to 0% and let it charge back to 100% while off... But during that time I also pulled my SD card out put the data on my PC formatted it put data back on... I don't think the new Sim helped at all but it wouldn't hurt to try

I've had this happen after flashing some ROMs (MIUI and older CM versions). It's a ***** to fix, and honestly its mostly trial and error. I did manage to get it to work, but I can't remember the exact series of things I did. You can tell its working correctly when it shows 4G/LTE (not just LTE) and you can still make phone calls, and you can send/receive texts and MMS.
Before trying any of this though, it might just be a KitKat issue -- you will lose a huge amount of reception running the stock 4.4.2 OS. When I tried it I was never able to get 4G due to the poor signals I was getting with KitKat. I would strongly recommend reflashing to the the last Jelly Bean stock firmware (skip gpt.bin and tz.bin) and see if you still have the no 4G issue. I'm running stock JB (with the garbage apps frozen) after trying every ROM out there, because the signals I get are way stronger, and the battery life (might be due to better signals?) is amazing -- I can go 2-3 days without a charge.
In any case, if you still want to try it, I think these settings are the ones you want (what worked for me was actually TOGGLING the settings to something else, then back to the correct ones). Also, this was under JB, but I think its identical with KitKat:
Dial *#*#4636#*#*
Go to Phone Info. Click the menu option and click on the Radio Bands. Change it to US Band. This will break everything.
Go back to the menu and Radio Bands. Change it back to Cellular.
Then scroll down and click on the Preferred Network Type. Change it to GSM/CDMA (Auto). At this point you should see the Location: showing actual info in the BID, SID, NID fields, and GSM will be "In Service", GSRM will be "Connected" and Network Type will probably be eHRPD (which is still 3G).
Click on the preferred network type again and change it to "LTE/CDMA/Evdo". It should change the GSRM to LTE. If not, power off, pull the SIM, power on. Wait for it to say SIM not found. Power back off, put in the SIM and power back on.
Go to your Settings, and under Wireless & networks click on More... and click Mobile Networks. Again, the fix was toggling, so if it says Global, change it to LTE/CDMA or if it says LTE/CDMA, change it to Global. It doesn't matter which one its set to (as long as its one of those 2 and you toggled it).
At this point, I had to let the phone sit for about 10-15 minutes. After I came back, it started switching automatically to 4G/LTE and you should be good to go.
If you can't MMS or text, go back to the Mobile Networks settings, click on Access Point Names, click the menu and reset to default. Power off and power back on.
Hope this helps... GL!
I wish I could say that helped... But it didn't... I'm not sure what this thing is doing, in LTE, it doesn't even detect a network.

So this worked for me....kinda. It will keep my LTE when I switch back and forth, but only until I call someone. At which point it will stop auto-switching back and forth.
So, I got a new SIM, and things worked for a while, but when I tried to make a call, it said "Phone not authenticated". So I go back in, the guy says to dial *228, and 1 to activate. I do it, and the calling works, but I'm back to 3g. So I'm back in this boat again...while I get 4g in my Gnex, with the same Sim...

True... But see, the same SIM can get 4G in my Galaxy Nexus, which makes 0 sense. I might go get another SIM again, but I'll just deal with it for a while. It works if I do LTE only mode on my Razr. It's strange that the same SIM works perfect in my other phone.

You're boot loader will not be relocked. . if the ota wasn't relocking the bl and doing just the opposite then you have nothing to worry about regarding that... As for unroot you're unlocked so all you'd have to do is flash SuperSU or use the root method again... If you're stock then rather the FDR just run it in safe mode long press power button till screen pop long press power off till screen pop select OK...if safe mode helps then you'll need to FDR...

I dunno much about voice mail, have you tried clearing data and cache of your dialer or phone app. Try that out (Make sure to make a backup of your current contacts of needed). If that doesn't works.. then maybe issue with your carrier. Try your sim card out with other devices and see if that works. If that works for other phone.. then you can be assured that it's your phones fault.
