How is froyo so far on the dell streak? Is it stable and is it fast?
About 99.99% stable and very very fast to say steven has only been doing it for 3 weeks in his spare time its a dam site better than the 2.1 that 02 pushed out give it a try but remember it is an on going Beta
Lucf is right, it really is super fast and pretty stable. Seriously slippery, as fast as any phone out there right now.
Simply wonderful. Do it - you won't regret it. Everything just feels smoother - the lock, scrolling, button and touchscreen response are all improved. Now I rock flash sites too.

The new version with the latest build.prop is just amazing... finally seeing 'my device' on top of the Nexus One 2.2+ in Benchmark scores. It just keeps getting better and better every update.
I've been playing around with this phone a lot since I got it. Today, I flashed back to DI18 and left it unrooted and found myself astonished at how much better the overall performance is.
DK28 is garbage.
If this is old news, I apologize... I just got this phone a week ago.
huh? i've only had my phone since tuesday, i haven't rooted it as of yet... but i wanted to see what that froyo is all about.
Don't do it. It's fun to play with, but like the OP said, if you want something that works reliably and well, stay stock.
Bonsai dk28 works great for me, but to each his own.

I have nothing against people who experiment with different baked ROMs on their phones--after all, where would we be without 'em?--but the performance of stock 2.1 on my Epic was already solid enough that I only really felt I needed to root for a few specific apps. I think any flashing I was going to do was always going to wait until official 2.2 was out and more development is done. I am jonesing for the new features and hopefully speed but am patient.

Agree bonsai is fantastic, no bugs what so ever and very clean and fast. Way better then 2.1 stock battery life ia about the same.
i wont go back to d118, i will miss hulu and, humans vs, aliens and andy 83 those apps only work on 2.2 and my phone has been running fantastic and way better then d118.

Wifi Works perfect!
Orientation switch is fast!!
And what ever other bugs people are having im having 0

I agree with the OP. I was running Nebula 1.0.7 and things were smooth for me but I went back to stock and outside of the progs that require 2.2, things are solid at least for me. Now I'm running Syndicate with Xtreme kernel and I'm loving it until we get the official Froyo

I want to go back to 2.1, but the ONLY thing that stops me is that I NEED GPS.
GPS on 2.1 is poop. I would have a hard time finding my peepee if it weren't for GPS.

Running Nebula, was getting weird issues, so I went back to Syndicate with Xtreme kernel v1.2.
Ahh, everything is so snappy. I'll stick with this for a while.

It sounds like most of the people who are noticing problems are using nebula. You guys should give bonsai a try.

Lolol! I have been saying exactly this for as long as I remember. Froyo is freaking jerky. The animation transitions are not smooth.

Flashing to Midnight ROM 3.2 is the best thing I ever did.
I love my Epic 4G…I loved it with Eclair, and I am now using midNIGHT 3.2 BYOR and I love it. It’s benchmark scores are twice as fast as Eclair, and you can tell how fast and snappy the phone is. Here is a list of the things I like best that Froyo was needed for.
1. Chrome to Phone – Huge time saver and way more useful than I thought it was going to be, and I thought it would be useful, lol
2. Flash 10.1
3. The apps that needed Froyo for enhancement… Gmail, Youtube, Winamp (there is a station I like on Shoutcast and Winamp required Froyo for Shoutcast)
4. Google Docs – being able to edit Google Docs on the go. The reason I wanted a phone with a keyboard was for doing long emails and editing documents and spreadsheets. The on-screen keyboard is OK, but takes up a lot if real estate.
5. Moving apps to the SD Card – I am an app junkie and I need the space, lol
There are more things, but those are the most important to me. It is was like I got a new phone for a second time. Some of the other things I think that help make the phone better that are not Froyo “items” are the Gingerbread Keyboard (really, really good, better than iOS in my opinion), ASOP Lock Screen, and the EXT4 file system.
I still liked the phone when it had Eclair, and I wouldn’t go back and buy a different phone (and I like it on Froyo even better), it is nice hardware, awesome 5-row keyboard, and it’s AMOLED screen rocks and everyone who see’s it immediately compares it to their own back lit LCD screens, and develops a serious case of envy, lol. I am old enough to know that companies will be companies and will always make and break promises(Apple customers have to put up with a company that said their alarm was fixed in November to have it happen again in January and tells them they are holding their phone wrong). It would be nice if they always kept their promises, but they can’t. If companies were 100% honest, no one would buy their products just like if politicians were 100% honest, no one would vote for them. It would be nice to think we still would, but if we would….wouldn’t there already be 100% honest companies and politicians, lol

+1 bonsai runs way better then 2.1 and bettery life us slightly better...

Been running TrulyEpic 1.5 and quite pleased with the performance, features, battery-life, etc. I really really like that it now boots in < 30 seconds. (I swap batteries instead of charging, so quick boot times are especially nice).
2.1 Eclair simply unusable because of the Calendar and Bluetooth Voice Search bugs.
But beyond that you're just wrong on performance in Eclair vs Froyo.
Firstly, I'd like to make the standard "I love our devs" statement. When I first purchased my Vibrant, I loved the hardware, and absolutely hated the software.
Freezing, glitching music, non functional GPS, you name it; a myriad of issues. Then I flashed my first ROM, and fell in love with it. You guys turn a very mediocre phone, into arguably one of the best phones available, including what's been released after.
This post is more out of curiosity than anything. I currently have Darkies 2.2.1 ROM and it runs like a dream-
How far are we, realistically speaking, to a stable Gingerbread ROM? I follow the current Gingerbread alpha rom threads, and it seems like they aren't making a whole lot of progress. I assume this is because of roadblocks? What is keeping us from moving forward with a Gingerbread rom? Do we need the source released?

CM7 beta is now out for the Vibrant. However, that's not what's got me the most excited. The i9000 has recently got a gingerbread ROM leaked from Samsung. This should mean we should see the forums flooded with gingerbread ROMs in the coming days/weeks as soon as somebody can port the kernel over to the vibrant.
i'd say the cm7 is dd-able. no gps is the only real problem i've had, which isn't enough for me to go back to nongingerbread. the external sd doesn't mount, either, but i never used it anyway.... otherwise, sound works, haven't had a problem with data/calls/reboots, camera and video recording work, etc.

I would go out on a limb here and say that this is pretty close...
It might be a while before it gets to be a care free DD. The whitehawx and CM iterations both work in theory but they are still pretty raw in terms of total useability.
I say give it a while and we'll see more true GB progress.

Like I said, the leaked i9000 2.3.2 ROM should have a great effect on the 2.3 GB ROM dev community for the Vibrant.
CM7 is my dd right now, and it actually seems more stable than any other rom I've tried (I had reboots and lockups with bionix when using gps). The tower-based location isn't as accurate as real gps, but is good enough for pulling up directions most of the time. Gps is also supposedly fixed on github, but I think they were saying to hold off on flashing anything from github until they get some issue with the new touchkey driver sorted out.
What are the benefits of GB over Froyo as a daily driver at this point. From what I've read, there's not likely to be any significant performance increase and most of the new features are minor. Other than the cosmetic differences, what's so bad about being stuck on Froyo?

nothing is bad about being stuck on froyo. i thought people making a big deal about the lock screen animation were being ridiculous, but it really is damn cool. it's just the little things like that, just like it's the little things that make you like a certain rom over another.
that, and 'why not'? they keep making new versions, and we'll keep finding a way to get it on our phones.
i went on i9000 forum and flashed insanity 7.1 gingerbread and it ran fine ...makes me thin we are soooo colse to get it on vibrant hmmmm i say two more weeks ......thats what methink.

Yep Samsung released ICS on the Google Nexus. If you want update from cymod, check the dev forums. All the info is there.
As of right now, there is no official ETA on Cyanogenmod9 (ICS) although from looking at their latest work (Nightly Builds, they are close. They will have to go through some Betas and then a RC (Release Candidate,) but even the Alphas are in a very good state. Usually by the time it is in Beta, CM is in a daily-driver condition.
As for Samsung's official ICS rom, the company has committed to bringing ICS to the entire Galaxy Tab line in Q1 of 2012, which means in the first 3 months of the year (Jan, Feb, March) Bear in mind that there is the possibility that they will miss that deadline due to unforseen bugs and isssues, so they may end up delivering in Q2, which would still put them on track for their initial promise of the first half of the year.

The tab is much much faster with ICS and the general performance is better. For example theres no lag when using the appswitcher.
Some things aren't working yet (Camera, native VPN) but since a few days even hardware-accelerated video is working. Just do a nandroid backup and try it out, it runs REALLY great! I would never go back

i agree the Kang release is good enough to use every day. IMO Honeycomb is rubbish and this rom is way better

I just picked up a 10.1 and am very dissapointed with its performance. Very laggy and not a great user experience.
Before I sell it or put too much effort into it, do any of the ICS builds make a noticeable improvement in the over all performance? Or is it just a better UI?
Honeycomb is downright awful IMO, and I would rather have GB stretched out on this thing given the inconsistency of HC. I know ICS will address some of those concerns, but if it doesn't also bring with it a performance improvement I think I will sell this thing.

ICS is much better than HC, not just the UI. At the moment, there's still a few things that don't work (camera, for example). But don't take my word, try it, it will only take a few minutes and then you decide if it's good enough.
you can get immediate and excellent performance by just going to GalaxyTask custom ROM - ICS is even more smoother

Compared to the stock honeycomb that comes with the 10.1, this is night and day. Performance on stock honeycomb was a JOKE. Lagged like my HTC Hero. Same day as I bought the pad I installed this ICS ROM and it's been awesome ever since. Only need the camera working now!
You wont be dissapointed. This is a great piece of hardware, but shipped with unoptimized software. Flash your own software in and you'll love it!
Even going to a custom 3.2 rom will give a lot of speed and responsivness. 3.1 is realy realy not the best rom to put on a device and help "selling" the thing!
I've been running Galaxy Task Slim 13.1 and it's realy better than stock 3.1. I haven't tryed the stock 3.2 yet though, that might be a performance jump also!
I too agree. After the switch to the ICS there is no way to revert back to the old HC version. This despite the lack of the camera and the VPN......

Thanks for replying after the recommendation I have upgraded to p4wifi milestone 3, its awesome.

I've read amazing things about the Android Revolution ROM, and I can see from the poll how it has (apparently) way more users than any other ROM.
So I have a question for Revolution fans: now that I'm addicted to the look and feel and small and big features of Jellybean ... how can I possibly go back to a Gingerbread environment?
No kidding, sell me to the idea because I can't bear myself to seriously try it, as I feel like GB will somehow make my device older, slower, feature-poor, unwieldy, etc.
(I was there when GB was the latest and sexyest, and I loved it, up untill ICS and then JB came along)
I guess it is all just a mental hickup of mine.
So please, help me get past it ... tell me what would be the catch in going back to a GB environment

I doubt the camera in Sense 4 is any worse, and on AOSP you can always install MIUI one from GB which does a really decent job on DHD.
SQ is also great on Sense4. Now as for the "faster", this is a bold stament. To be more specific GB is more responsive, better on multitasking, but ICS/JB is way smoother (there is no comparison when browsing) and it still isn't slow or laggy at all.
