[Q] French prepay sim with data for my SGS - Galaxy S I9000 General

Hello,
Not sure if it's ok to post this here, but I'm really stuck. My french is almost non-existent, so I'm asking for help from our french speaking members. Basically, I need to buy a french pay as you go (prepay) sim card for my galaxy s for October. Having had a look at the french mobile phone operators' various websites, I'm at a total loss as to what's available. Basically, I need a prepay sim that allows me to cheapily buy some sort of data allowance for the week/month. Any help/recommendations would be much appreciated.

newbie questions regarding unlocking SIM and packet rates

hi...
im a newbie to the Softbank X01HT, and to be sure would like to ask a few questions before purchasing one...
when people say 'unlock SIM,' it would just allow the X01HT to work with any carrier's card, right? which means that if in another country, i take out Softbank's U-SIM card, and replaced it a local card; then it should theoretically work?
i know that the MAX for the 'Teigaku' for the X01HT approaches 10,000 yen - but does this limit still hold if we use third-party apps, ie., Opera Mobile, Skype, etc.?
when people say 'SIM Free,' i would understand that this is to make the X01HT work even without a SIM card inserted (as ive heard a lot of rumors that without the U-SIM, it just becomes a brick). am i correct in this?
as a follow-up to previous question, if i do choose to make my Softbank X01HT 'SIM Free,' then i can use it just like any other PDA with Full functionality, ie., Bluetooth, WiFi, etc.?
thanks in advanced...!!!
Note: i apologize for asking things that may have been asked before... 'did try searching through the forums, but couldnt find a clear answer to some of my inquiries...

i was wondering if anyone can verify these or not?

SIM free does not specifically mean it works without a SIM it means you can use your own SIM from your own network. i.e. it is already unlocked. In general this means it will be more expensive to purchase as it is not subsidised by a network provider.
In fact the Hermes does work without a SIM with all the functions that are not SIM dependent.
You will not get a cheaper device if you run third party software because all devices sold come with pre-installed MS operating System and a set of applications (like them or not)
Mike
Hi Alfred,
I will try and answer some of your questions
The X01ht will work fine as just a PDA without the sim installed
The unlimited access is a bit more tricky Opera will work for the unlimited access and i'm unsure about skype tho
Softbanks price plans are a confusing as hell and it does seem to matter what you use it for .
Also you know that the unlimited price of 5,900 yen is a offer and real price is about 9,800
Really if you just want a internet browser/PDA/Skype/Email and not a Phone I would say that you get a Sharp EM one ( if you live in the Tokyo) it's 39,000 with a 2 year contract and a flat rate of 6,000 for unlimited access
it's what i have done ..
Rob
hi rob,
thanks for the reply...
actually im looking for an "all-in-one" type of thing, so the eMobile wont work (voice services are said to begin in 2008/3). also, once you leave tokyo - no more signal...
willcom's WS004SH/WS007SH wont work either since there is no international roaming. also the fact that PHS signals are very weak outside tokyo.
id rather have an AU - unfortunately, no PDA-type devices; so i guess im left with Softbank.
as for the motivation for my post - my only need is that i can use this device when i go abroad and being able to use the locally available SIM cards (so i dont have to pay expensive roaming charges)... im not so privy with experimenting with various ROMs, etc.
but what im worried is that compared to eMobile and Willcom, Softbank's browsing rates are very expensive...

Traveling to Czech Republic

Hope I put this in the right area.
I will be traveling to the Czech Republic this July and am wanting to use my unlocked TMobile MDA (US) while there. I have looked at a couple of the carriers for plans that may fit my needs but I am not entirly sure I understand how exactly they work.
So here is what I am looking for. I will be there for 2 weeks. I am needing limited cell, mostly data. I am planning on using the data for VOIP built in to WM6 connected to my Asteriks server if possible. If I can't get that working I will be using the data as a modem to connect via soft phone. I was looking in to Pay AS You Go type services but with the terminology - tariffs? - I got a little confused. Now if data won't work for me obviously I will need more cell mins.
Can anyone help fill me in on what I might be looking for? I know of only 3 carriers for the country so am thinking my choices are limited - TMobile, O2 and Vodofone.
not sure about Czech Republic
but many places you can just buy a prepaid sim
with various amounts on in a convientstore or supermarket
and use it in any phone
Right, I have read up and understand that pre paid is the way to go, but does this normally include data service as well. And is there a service more reliable than the other. Just because I use TMobile in the US doesn't mean I will have the same luck with them out there so I will go with whoever seems to have the best service\price.
I used my UK tmobile pay as you go for data in Switzerland and France last february. It worked fine and wasn't all that expensive as far as I remember. I just collected andsent email a couple of times a day though and I used about £10 in a week.
Yes, all 3 Czech carriers (TMobile, O2, Vodofone) sell prepaid SIM cards, and I think that all of them support data/internet services (at least GPRS/EDGE). Vodafone's prices are 0,68 CZK/kB for WAP and 0,060 CZK/kB for generic internet (which is what you are interested in, I guess), other carriers' prices are probably very similar.
With O2 there is prepaid data nonstop tarif, it supports also 3G. Just go to one of O2 shops, some of them may speak english
I second the o2 suggestion. I recently took the train to Praha CR and my 02 dervice did not let me down. Problem sometimes with prepaid is they want to see documents...like residency requirements..at least here in Germany. I would get a calling card and call ahead...things like that can throw everything off.
no problem to buy prepaid card anywhere, no documents needed. you can buy it on most petrol stations, post offices - everywhere. I will give you further info about pricing as soon as i recieve it...
nocturne lives in Czech Republic so I would avoid going there.
So, i made some search about current situation.
t-mobile is the best fitting solution for you.
They offer prepaid sim card called "Twist Internet" - for 850CZK (about 35USD), you can use unlimited data connection (GPRS, EDGE or G4)
this card can be bought in every t-mobile shop, there are many of these shops in all cities larger than 10000 habitants - so it's almost everywhere.
you need no papers to buy this card, if yu will not spend another 850CZK, it simply will not work after a month, no more payments necessary.
Calling pricing is hard to choose. It depends on how much will you call and where. Try to specify it better...
If you have more questions, feel free to contact me...
vlodeck: shut up you polish freak
nocturne: ukrainian to be more exact

Some Questions

Hey all,
Hopefully I'll be buying an XDA Mini S soon from eBay, but have a few questions that I'd like answering (if possible) before hand.
1) Can I use the phone on a PAYG sim card? (I know there are problems with GPRS, but can it be used for evrything else, and is it possible to py for GPRS?)
3) Would it work on a vodafone contract? (I am currently on O2 PAYG but would love free GPRS, the cheapest contract I can find is around £14 on Vodafone. Can anybody reccomend anything cheaper, around the same price or better? Its just that O2 seem to charge an awefull lot, although I really would like to stay with them)
EDIT:
Has anybody used the O2 'business data' tarrifs before? it looks like you can pay just for the internet or something.
Thank you very much in advance.
//James
As long as you get a SIM unlocked device you are free to use any SIM card in there world wide.
The GPRS setting for your provider you can find posted all over the internet. Check your providers homepage first! They often have it in the HELP & F.A.Q. section
Thank you
Can somebody help me? I'm sur ethat there are people around who can answer number 3.
I ordered my Xda Wizard and it will be coming in the post today.

Hero on O2 pay and go?

Hi all, im thinking about getting either the Hero or the touch Diamond 2 sim free which i have seen going for about £400 (Hero that is) and would like to use an O2 pay and go sim with it.
Question is can anybody using an O2 pay and go sim give me any feedback as regards compatability, call quality and access to the internet etc?
I have read that the settings are pulled to the phone from the sim when you first power up, but would help if an actual user could confirm this for me as its a lot of money to spend as you can appreciate.
A friend of mine recently bought a sim free Diamond 2 used from E Bay and tried several sims in it only to find that it could not connect to any network, however it later turned out that the phone had been reported lost/stolen and some sort of block put on it. Luckily he got his money back but it throws up the question for me wether there may be an O2/ HTC sim incompatability as O2 dont officialy support this manufacturers devices.
Any feedback would be appreciated, im a new member and this would be my first smartphone so please be gentle lol.
Many thanks.
I had my O2 sim in my Sim free Hero for a week with no problems what so ever.
I'm using an O2 pay-monthly SIM with no problems, all the settings were done automatically. Haven't tried a pay and go but I reckon you'll be okay.
Great new guys many thanks for the replies

XperiaZ Simfree on Softbank

Hi All
Simply put, I have a Softbank flatrate contract for Internet/Calls (Pakehoudai) and was using this with the Pantone 6 (200SH) but I dropped this too hard...display is cracked but its still usable.
I got myself a simfree Xperia Z as replacement anyway. Calls and SMS work fine. MMS I dont care. Mobile Data however is also not working. I tried lots of APN settings already including andoworld, plus.softbank, smile.world but they wouldnt work. The APN setting sin the old phone are not viewable/changeable by default. I recently found through an APN backup app that the actual APN is fourgsmartphone. However, this also didn't do it. Has anyone experience with this kind of APN ? I belive it might be some device specific APN maybe.
Regards
Stefan
Try the open.softbank APN. That's what I use
Sent from my Nexus 7 using XDA Premium HD app
Hmm, I think I also tried that one. Will check again after I return to Japan this WE.
tried that one again. No luck. I think my SIM uses yet another "special" APN for SB newest 4G smartphones.
This is an old thread but I ran across it in my searches so others may too.
If your apn is fourgsmartphone, which I think is pretty common, then your apn user and pass are specific to your sim card. Only 2 or three phones have been found to have "hacks" that allow you to access those values. At least that's all I have found in the last day searching. Off hand one of those phones is the huawei 201m.
Good luck to us all. I might just end up buying a used huawei just to find out the code. If that's the case I'll post if it works
That was also my last finding. Sorry should have posted it. The UN and PW are somewhere on the SIM card, but I dont know how to read them. If my Japanese was better I'd try some of those Otaku shops in my town and see if they can find out.
Still have no mobile data. But i found, I spent 90% of my time close to WLAN I can live with it. :highfive:

Thanks for the post on this i just moved to Japan and bought the Pantone 6 just to use my unlocked Xperia ZL but after a lot of research the "siliver" colored USim cards have the username and password specific for each sim card. You mention that the UN and PW is on the sim card my wife is Japanese so i'll ask her if she can find the UN or PW if there is any on the sim card.
Did anyone find one of the phones where we can see all APN settings? Or is there Japanese shops I can go to to assist me with using my Xperia ZL on Softbank network? If i put my sim in my ZL i can make calls and use MMS but no internet connection.
Thanks again.

Primod8080,
First, welcome to Japan and it's quasi-monopoly spoiled network operators.
I dont know if I mentioned before, I also got the Pantone 6 SIM and it is still not working in my Xperia Z Simfree for mobile data. Phone and SMS is fine. The UN and PW for the softbank APN should be stored on the SIM. To read them out you dont need Japanese language skills, but rather an app or SIM-to-PC connection and a program. I also have a Japanese wife, but she is not interested in hacking SIMs. Maybe your wife is ? Let me know. There are shops in the electronics district (e.g. Akihabara) that offer mobile data related services, maybe they can help you for a fee.
Meanwhile, you can abuse the Pantone 6 as a mobile Wifi router via the thethering app, if that is in your contract. Also some, but not all Softbank Wifi hotspots in shops will accept your Xperia ZL/softbank SIM.
What I will do in the near future is get a bmobile SIM without contract or phone. Stupid Softbank.
Greetings
Stefan
Thanks...

Sorry for the late responce finally found work as an English teacher here so didn't get a chance to come on xda for a while.
