XperiaZ Simfree on Softbank - Networking

Hi All
Simply put, I have a Softbank flatrate contract for Internet/Calls (Pakehoudai) and was using this with the Pantone 6 (200SH) but I dropped this too hard...display is cracked but its still usable.
I got myself a simfree Xperia Z as replacement anyway. Calls and SMS work fine. MMS I dont care. Mobile Data however is also not working. I tried lots of APN settings already including andoworld, plus.softbank, smile.world but they wouldnt work. The APN setting sin the old phone are not viewable/changeable by default. I recently found through an APN backup app that the actual APN is fourgsmartphone. However, this also didn't do it. Has anyone experience with this kind of APN ? I belive it might be some device specific APN maybe.
Regards
Stefan

Try the open.softbank APN. That's what I use
Sent from my Nexus 7 using XDA Premium HD app

Hmm, I think I also tried that one. Will check again after I return to Japan this WE.

tried that one again. No luck. I think my SIM uses yet another "special" APN for SB newest 4G smartphones.

This is an old thread but I ran across it in my searches so others may too.
If your apn is fourgsmartphone, which I think is pretty common, then your apn user and pass are specific to your sim card. Only 2 or three phones have been found to have "hacks" that allow you to access those values. At least that's all I have found in the last day searching. Off hand one of those phones is the huawei 201m.
Good luck to us all. I might just end up buying a used huawei just to find out the code. If that's the case I'll post if it works

That was also my last finding. Sorry should have posted it. The UN and PW are somewhere on the SIM card, but I dont know how to read them. If my Japanese was better I'd try some of those Otaku shops in my town and see if they can find out.
Still have no mobile data. But i found, I spent 90% of my time close to WLAN I can live with it. :highfive:

Thanks for the post on this i just moved to Japan and bought the Pantone 6 just to use my unlocked Xperia ZL but after a lot of research the "siliver" colored USim cards have the username and password specific for each sim card. You mention that the UN and PW is on the sim card my wife is Japanese so i'll ask her if she can find the UN or PW if there is any on the sim card.
Did anyone find one of the phones where we can see all APN settings? Or is there Japanese shops I can go to to assist me with using my Xperia ZL on Softbank network? If i put my sim in my ZL i can make calls and use MMS but no internet connection.
Thanks again.

Primod8080,
First, welcome to Japan and it's quasi-monopoly spoiled network operators.
I dont know if I mentioned before, I also got the Pantone 6 SIM and it is still not working in my Xperia Z Simfree for mobile data. Phone and SMS is fine. The UN and PW for the softbank APN should be stored on the SIM. To read them out you dont need Japanese language skills, but rather an app or SIM-to-PC connection and a program. I also have a Japanese wife, but she is not interested in hacking SIMs. Maybe your wife is ? Let me know. There are shops in the electronics district (e.g. Akihabara) that offer mobile data related services, maybe they can help you for a fee.
Meanwhile, you can abuse the Pantone 6 as a mobile Wifi router via the thethering app, if that is in your contract. Also some, but not all Softbank Wifi hotspots in shops will accept your Xperia ZL/softbank SIM.
What I will do in the near future is get a bmobile SIM without contract or phone. Stupid Softbank.
Greetings
Stefan

Thanks...
Thanks Stefan for your responce i'm still getting use to living in Japan only been here for about 3 months now. Sorry for the late responce finally found work as an English teacher here so didn't get a chance to come on xda for a while. I did figure a way to use my xperia zl on softbank's network but i had to buy softbank motorola razr m201 once i got it i installed an apk file that someone made specifically for the m201 that will get the unique username and password once i got that everything was fine. I got the phone off yahoo auction with the help of my wife she did the translation.
Thanks again and hope we can be friends here and in Japan!:good:

Pay As You Go XDA 2 ?

i am recently deciding whether to part with my cash and buy a xda 2. First of all are they worth it? Also would i be able to use a pay as you go sim card from a samsung v200? which does have gprs as it has o2 active i was just wondering as i do not really want to go to a pay monthly plan
thnaks in advance
How much you paying for it? It will work with the sim you have as long as its an O2 phone, if not you can unlock it for free.
it will probably be £270 unlocked and yes i have a o2 sim card
You won't be able to take advantage of the full internet GPRS, I had no end of trouble trying to connect to MSN and websites outside of 02 active, even after numerous phone calls to 02, they never got this sorted out.
As far as I know, on a pay as you go simcard, you cannot benefit from full internet access with o2.
ye but is'nt there a way of changing the setting or something i heard you can do that to make it go on the internet
well can you plzz tell me so i can decide whether to get one
I have a PAYG vodafone in my xda2. Ive only just got the phone and still havent worked out how to get internet access on it. I downloaded vodafone's 'connect me' software and that buggered my actviesync connection so i had to uninstall it....
I would like to say that yes this is very possible.
I had my old XDA I and XDA II on pay and go with O2 I had full internet and full GPRS though it took alot of time to get the settings but I managed it. the only annoying this is when you send a text it tells you your credit about 5 times. I have now got the XDA IIi and the sim also works with this.
conclusion is that yes it can be done and its not hard either. just change the ISP and work connection
cheers can to share the setting for the xda 2 if you know them as if i get one i might need them trying to get my parents to pay half for my birthday present lol
I paid USD $600 for O2 XDA II 2 months ago.
But it's worth.
I'm using it in programming Pocketpc application, capture Discovery from my PC then copy it to my SD 512 MB and view in PocketPC when go to sleep, listen MP3s, use softwares...
It's a nice XDA man !

There used to be a way, by changing the Proxy settings, but this does not work for newer SIM's.
O2 PAYG SIM's less than 18 months old (I think) can only access WAP via GPRS.
Cost: Expect to pay £200-£250 for a good condition XDA II on Ebay (just got £235 for mine, but some have gone for as little as £180)
well my sim card is from a samsung v200 which was brought new about november 2003 which has gprs on it, but now am not sure although i suppose if it does not work i should be able to pick on up easily from a store somewhere
Anyone have the Voda settings for GPRS/MMS? I'm on O2 and the reception around here is hit and miss, but Voda is always spot-on. I've a PAYG card that's data-enabled, I just need the settings for the XDAII.

Can Dopod U1000 make calls in Japan?

I know Dopod 900 and other 3G phones can be used in Japan as long as you have a 3G enabled SIM card from your home telco. How about the new U1000? If I buy one in Singapore can I use it during my trips to Japan? This is a major purchase decision point so please help if you can. Thanks!
I can confirm it works. And you need to use a handfree to make call. I used 3HK and CSL SIM card in Japan and works just fine.

That's good news. Could you please tell me how you set up the GPRS connection?
Edit: oops , I see, you are not using a Japanese service, like Softbank, or NTT. I am still trying to find out whether it's possible to use an unlocked Athena with a Softbank SIM card. I know the it would work as phone, but how to set up the GPRS connection would be the problem.

Yes. I use Singtel and use roaming when I'm in Japan. My SIM has the 3G service activated. I hope you can find a telco offering service in Japan. Good luck.
Using Dopod 900 3G PPC in Japan
Hi! Can anyone tell me how to get the Dopod 900 I bought in Malaysia to work here in Japan? Sales clerks are telling me it's not possible. Dopod's site doesn't offer any help. Thanks a lot. I plan to be here for a month or more so it will really help to find out what's true and possible.
Yes I can confirm it works too.

Yes it does. As far as I understand if it supports 3G then it should technically work in japan. Too bad I no longer have my Dopod 900 with me to test it out.
Dopod 900 Woes in Japan
Thanks for your replies. The problem is I want a Japanese sim card and number not the roaming services from Malaysia as I have temporarily moved. This what sales clerks are telling me is not possible. They say I must have a Japanese made handphone. !!?? I know they are protectionist here but surely there is a way around the obstacles.. Any specific suggestions? really appreciate your help!
What I know
I am really interested in this too, as I plan on getting an Athena soon. However, I know that you don't need a "Japanese made handphone". They don't like people using different phones on their network, but they can't really stop you.
Well, they probably can technically stop you, but it is highly unlikely that they will. The reason the sales clerk is telling you it is impossible is probably because there are almost NO unlocked phones in Japan. 99.99% of all phones sold here are branded and locked to a specific carrier.
I am a Hermes user and bought my Hermes through Softbank, a carrier here in Japan. I have since reflashed it hundreds of times and have never had a problem with connecting to the network. I also know others on this board who are Kaiser users who have imported their Kaisers from other countries and are using them on Softbank's system with no problems. There was also a big interest in the mobile device geek community of Japan in the Treo 700w when it first appeared, and I have seen blogs of Japanese guys who have got that running on Softbank's system. So it IS definately possible to run non-Softbank phones on Softbank's network provided you have a valid Softbank SIM.
Some caveats:
I have never seen any carrier here just selling SIMs. You will more than likely have to purchase a phone to get a SIM card.
Voice and SMS (text) should work automatically just by popping in the SIM. Data and MMS are more difficult.
Data
There are two ways of connecting to Softbank's data servers, and each is charged differently. One method uses a public access server, but the charges for using this are quite high. This is the server used for people connecting laptops using cellular modems. The other method allow access under Softbank's tiered and capped system, which is the much cheaper and safer option. The connection settings to access this system are very closely guarded and no one to my knowledge has been able to hack them.
However, there is a workaround. See here: http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=298031
The problem with this workaround is that it requires a program called WIFIwake.exe. And it just so happens that WIFIwake.exe is coded specifically for different machines. On the link above, there is a version for the Universal and a version for the Hermes (the U and H in the .zip file names). Valued member Chaimd hex-edited a file to make it work for Kaiser: http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=328362&highlight=softbank&page=3. And he seemed to think it was a pretty easy job. If asked nicely, he might be able to hex-edit one for Athena too - or not. I don't know.
MMS
MMS is also more difficult to set up. Basically, it requires a program called MMSLite which can be quirky. The only way to know for sure whether it will work with Athena is to try and see I think. And it does NOT work on WM6.1 systems, so you will have to decide between MMS + WM6 or NoMMS + WM6.1. This is the big reason I am thinking of buying the 7501 rather than the 7510.
After some research...
... on some Japanese sites, it seems that a CID unlocked Athena can use the WIFIwake.exe file meant for the Universal.
Also, MMSLite seems to be working as well. So it seems that on the Softbank network at least the Athena can do it all.
Dopod Woes in Japan
Dear Larsuck,
I appreciate your investing so much time and thought to help me. I'm not even remotely savy enough to understand the complexities of your advice but I do gather that buying a Japanese phone is inevitable. Any suggestions for the cheapest? as I'll just use it for local calls and carry my laptop with me when I need other connectivity.

Huh? So you have decided not to the the Athena? There are tons of really cool phones over here that can do many, many different things - but none of them compare to WM in that they aren't as customizable. Go to the Softbank website (English: http://mb.softbank.jp/mb/en/ ) and check them out.
However, if you want to get the Athena, here are two choices:
1) Get the Athena, come to Japan, get a cheap phone (cheap in the relative sense) here, take the SIM card out of it and put it in the Athena. Do some research on this site and get the Athena up and running. Keep the cheap phone just in case the Athena dies.
2) Get the Athena, come to Japan, get an expensive but slightly subsidized phone, unlock it and sell it on ebay. Use the sim card in your Athena and hope it doesn't die.

Should my TyNT work in Japan ?

Hi,
I'm french and on a 6 days trip to Tokyo.
I cannot receive any network.
Can someone tell me if it's normal not to get anything or should I do something special to get a network ?
Thanks in advance
It -should- work...
Hm, it -ought- to work if you're using a hermes or other quadband phone...
not sure what the issue could be without more details, but you could try creating a new modem connection to Softbank:
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=298031&highlight=softbank+proxy
Not sure if this will interfere with any settings you've already got on there, however, and also not sure if/how you'll be charged.
If your phone is unlocked, I've been told by the Softbank stores in Meguro and Nakameguro that they will sell you a SIM card on a basic plan if you bring in your phone and let them test it with a Softbank SIM. I guess this wont help your net settings, however...

japan has a 3G(UMTS) network - the TyTN will work.
BUT, you need to check with your service provider that they have a roaming agreement with one of japans networks.
Once I read that Vodafone works but it's the only Italian carrier that has this option, so I guess elivne is right!

Hero on O2 pay and go?

Hi all, im thinking about getting either the Hero or the touch Diamond 2 sim free which i have seen going for about £400 (Hero that is) and would like to use an O2 pay and go sim with it.
Question is can anybody using an O2 pay and go sim give me any feedback as regards compatability, call quality and access to the internet etc?
I have read that the settings are pulled to the phone from the sim when you first power up, but would help if an actual user could confirm this for me as its a lot of money to spend as you can appreciate.
A friend of mine recently bought a sim free Diamond 2 used from E Bay and tried several sims in it only to find that it could not connect to any network, however it later turned out that the phone had been reported lost/stolen and some sort of block put on it. Luckily he got his money back but it throws up the question for me wether there may be an O2/ HTC sim incompatability as O2 dont officialy support this manufacturers devices.
Any feedback would be appreciated, im a new member and this would be my first smartphone so please be gentle lol.
Many thanks.
I had my O2 sim in my Sim free Hero for a week with no problems what so ever.
I'm using an O2 pay-monthly SIM with no problems, all the settings were done automatically. Haven't tried a pay and go but I reckon you'll be okay.
Great new guys many thanks for the replies

HTC Hero + 3 Sim = No connection

New Hero. Originally sold by Orange UK. Unlocked and imported to Ireland.
New sim from 3 Ireland.
Sim goes into Hero, but Hero does not connect to network. Occassionally phone makes brief connection to 2G roaming partner (Vodafone), but never 3G connection to 3 network.
Manually search for networks and select 3 (or any network for that matter) and phone says "Your SIM card does not allow a connection to this network".
"Mobile Network - Connect to internet" option in settings seems disabled (greyed out, can't be changed).
Have tried HTC, Orange, T-Mobile and MoDaCo ROMs.
Can anyone please suggest a fix. This is surely a phone setting thing? It can't be that 3 USIMs just don't work in the phone can it? I mean I haven't got the APN configured properly, but I should still be getting basic phone services no?
Did you get this fixed? I am having the same problem trying to use Three sim in England on a Orange Hero. It accepts the network unlock code but then stays on the 'unlocking sim' screen and I left it for ages.
No. Gave up and am staying with my old provider (3 didn't seem too interested in holding onto me as a new customer).
I've been posting this query in a few places. In one thread a guy from England said his 3 Sim used to work but then suddenly began exhibiting the behaviour I have described. I think he said a factory reset fixed it. Anyway, some have supposed that this could be a bug in Android/Hero that makes it incompatible with 3. I personally suspect its more about 3.
Thanks anyway. There must be a way round it, I'll find it.
Be sure to post if you do.

This is MAJOR weird. Chances are, the new USIM is not compatible. I've got mine for about 2 years, first in a W910i, now in Hero (sim-free, UK). Everything worked first time in the Hero, just needed APN settings for MMS and data. Surprisingly, MMS won't send or download while on WiFi. Mine's currently running on the leaked 2.73.405.5 ROM (not MoDaCo).
Maybe try someone else' sim, from 3 or other network and see if that works.

Well I've never actually unlocked a phone myself so I don't know, but of its hanging then I would guess its not unlocking properly so its not going to work.
Maybe contact the person you bought the code from and ask for help or another code. Otherwise I wonder if reflashing the ROM would help?
Hero on 3 Ireland
I am using a 3 Ireland "3pay" prepaid SIM with my white Hero (completely unlocked, imported from UK). Works fine! I got the "mobile broadband" prepaid package about a year ago and had to buy a usb modem (sitting on my desk ever since) with the sim card.
You need to enter the 3ireland.ie APN, but no other magic incantations
Occasionally, I get the "Roaming" indicator in the notification bar on the Hero (weak signal might cause this). Then, clearly, no internet. Its not roaming with another provider either. I strongly suspect that this is a 3 bug. Reconnecting to the 3 network fixes it.
PS: I'm in Dublin and usually get a HSPA connection ("H" icon)
PPS: You do not need to top up your 3 sim in order to connect to http://my3.three.ie (indeed, on that web page you can enter your prepaid voucher #).

Hmm, you guys seem to have some strange issues with those 3 USIMs. Maybe checking serial numbers or chip revision would shed some light into this. My USIM is not only working fine, but also happily roaming (GSM + data!) when I tell it to do so. Heck, I've spent two weeks in Italy on "3 Italy" with this USIM and it worked fine.
Ok since posting on here yesterday I have rooted my phone and put on modacos latest rom and its still not working, I have tried two seperate three sims and a vodafone sim. Given that the vodafone sim is also not working Im thinking it's a problem with the unlock code.
I'll contact them and see what they say.

Maybe I was not clear enough: Every couple of days, I get the roaming indicator while being in Ireland. Clearly, you can't roam to another Irish network. While I haven't tried it yet, I'm pretty sure that roaming outside of Ireland will work (worked before I got the Hero).

It looks like we have the same problem.
As I promised above, it is the detailed description.
First case:
Turn on the phone with orange SIM card - everything works fine.
Turn on the phone with any other SIM card (I actually tried 3 other SIM card from 3 different providers). It asks unlock code. Enter unlock code I bought (actually any code containing 8 digits) it says "Network unlock successful." But after that it allow only emergency calls and if I try to make a call I see "Not registered in network" message. After reboot it asks unlock code again.
Second case:
If I do "restore to factory defaults" and turn it on the first time with my (no orange) SIM card, it asks unlock code I enter correct unlock code (salesman gave me one, and after that I also bought the same code in the Internet )
it hangs with phrase "Unlocking SIM card...". (Actually "turn off menu" works, I even can make an emergency call, but that is all I can get from it)
Also I noticed that in the first case there is strange line on the bottom of the screen (of the size of the notification bar).
I have tried different ROMS (original, rooted, latest, modacos) all the same. I only didn't try to downgrade radio firmware. I don't know if it can help. I upgraded to latest one even before I get the unlock code. As I already mentioned I also tried all SIM card I can obtain, the problem is obviously doesn't caused by SIM/Network incompatibility. Btw, my SIM card works OK in another HTC Hero (which was bought with my one).
I think it is problem with unlock procedure itself, not with code correctness. If wrong code entered it must say something like "wrong code", but for any 8 digit code it says "Network unlock successful". Is is the symptom! )
I do not know what to do further
Ok, I have now had a reply from Unlock Now, they said it must be an issue my phone (although we have now established it's an issue with orange phones) but they did refund my payment.
I'll keep looking into this and post back if I find anything out.

I bought the same unlock code on two different sites, finally both did refund It is OK, but what will we do further?
I've decided started a new thread (http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=560105) as I don't think it is just a problem with Three sims as the Vodafone one I tried didn't work.
I'll still post back here if we get any useful info.
