Should my TyNT work in Japan ? - 8525, TyTN, MDA Vario II, JasJam General

Hi,
I'm french and on a 6 days trip to Tokyo.
I cannot receive any network.
Can someone tell me if it's normal not to get anything or should I do something special to get a network ?
Thanks in advance

It -should- work...
Hm, it -ought- to work if you're using a hermes or other quadband phone...
not sure what the issue could be without more details, but you could try creating a new modem connection to Softbank:
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=298031&highlight=softbank+proxy
Not sure if this will interfere with any settings you've already got on there, however, and also not sure if/how you'll be charged.
If your phone is unlocked, I've been told by the Softbank stores in Meguro and Nakameguro that they will sell you a SIM card on a basic plan if you bring in your phone and let them test it with a Softbank SIM. I guess this wont help your net settings, however...

japan has a 3G(UMTS) network - the TyTN will work.
BUT, you need to check with your service provider that they have a roaming agreement with one of japans networks.

Once I read that Vodafone works but it's the only Italian carrier that has this option, so I guess elivne is right!

htc tytn with t-mobile rom

I am a t-mobile customer with an unlocked htc tytn. I wanted to know what woudl happen if I loaded my phone up with the t-mobile mda rom form the t-mobile site. If anyone knows please let me know. I have been trying to get the edge feature to work and im in a edge area but I still do not get the signal. Is there some sort of settings that I need in order to get edge to work. Thanks for the help
There is no t-mob rom upgrade available for HTC Hermes yet, probably the rom you are refering to is for another device. T-mob branded Hermes is called "MDA Vario II".
And yes, you need your operator settings for the data connection to work.
t-mobile settings
I am having problems with the tytn. I have a htc branded tytn and I am with t-mobile. I have all of my settings right. The internet works the mms works but the damn edge does not. What am I doing wrong. Whats going on here. Is there a t-mobile expert on this form that can walk me through getting this phone to do what its suppose to do.
probably a dumb question, but... are you on edge coverage?

Indeed, not yet, but as soon as it'll be made available it'll most likely appear on this site: http://www.tm-phonedownloads.com/mdas.html

Surely ringing them up and asking would be the quickest way of getting the right settings? You can just ask for them, write em down, and input them manually...
t-mobile rom
Yes I am in the edge coverage zone because I could be standing next to someone with a mda form t-mobile and they have edge and I done. Plus I live in an edge zone and I spoke with t-mobile and all of the settings are right and they told me I should be getting the coverage.
How do you have your connection set up? On my phone (T-Mobile UK), the T-Mobile Internet connection is set up as Cellular (3G, GPRS) in the dropdown box... I don't know what the options are for the US ROM, but I'm guessing they're similar...

Can I use 3 sim???

ok cheers for the answer mate, but i notice that your not in the uk and this questions mainly concerned the 3 network here in the uk mate and also the reason why I asked is because I saw this advert for the VPA Compact III, which my understanding was the same machine but he states that it cant be used with 3??? thanks for the quick reply.

Hi Shabba,
I'm sure I put a 3 SIM in mine the other day without a problem, however i've had a few drinks since then and can't fully remember. I'll try mine tomorrow with a 3 SIM but there should be no reason it shouldn't work if it's unlocked.
I'll update you tomorrow.

stating its not compatible???? totally confused!!!!
Yeah I don't get it either. There should be no reason why the TyTn can't connect to the 3 network as it's either WCDMA for 3 or GSM for O2 (Soon to be Orange) when there is no WCDMA coverage and the TyTN is able to use both. The only thing possibly is the 3 SIM card might be a UICC but I'd be very surprised if this is causing problems as Vodafone D2 and UK both use UICC too (basically a smart card with both USIM and SIM profiles stored).
Maybe it's as Closetland says that some 3 services are unavailable so he just says it doesn't work full stop?
Let me check for you tomorrow. I've got both a SPV M3100 (unlocked) and a T-Mobile Vario II I can try.

I've got one 3 SIM which does register onto 3 but when i make a call I get the message 'Your service does not allow access to this number' so the call is being setup correctly. This is the exact same behaviour as having the SIM in the original LG phone.

If you haven't taken the plunge already then some more info for you. I've got a working 3 SIM now and making and receiving calls OK. Don't have all the GPRS settings for 3 so didn't test that.

Hi topher1976, no they dont mate, infact it was only recently perhaps in the last year or so that they decided to release phones that weren't the size of bricks. The only phone they've release over here that slightly resembles a PPC was the Motorola a1000 and then a later but similar Motorola model both of which were huge and based on symbian UIQ operating system which is a bit poooh!!!

Can Dopod U1000 make calls in Japan?

I know Dopod 900 and other 3G phones can be used in Japan as long as you have a 3G enabled SIM card from your home telco. How about the new U1000? If I buy one in Singapore can I use it during my trips to Japan? This is a major purchase decision point so please help if you can. Thanks!
I can confirm it works. And you need to use a handfree to make call. I used 3HK and CSL SIM card in Japan and works just fine.

That's good news. Could you please tell me how you set up the GPRS connection?
Edit: oops , I see, you are not using a Japanese service, like Softbank, or NTT. I am still trying to find out whether it's possible to use an unlocked Athena with a Softbank SIM card. I know the it would work as phone, but how to set up the GPRS connection would be the problem.

Hi! Can anyone tell me how to get the Dopod 900 I bought in Malaysia to work here in Japan? Sales clerks are telling me it's not possible. Dopod's site doesn't offer any help. Thanks a lot. I plan to be here for a month or more so it will really help to find out what's true and possible.

Yes it does. As far as I understand if it supports 3G then it should technically work in japan. Too bad I no longer have my Dopod 900 with me to test it out.
Dopod 900 Woes in Japan
Thanks for your replies. The problem is I want a Japanese sim card and number not the roaming services from Malaysia as I have temporarily moved. This what sales clerks are telling me is not possible. They say I must have a Japanese made handphone. !!?? I know they are protectionist here but surely there is a way around the obstacles.. Any specific suggestions? really appreciate your help!
What I know
I am really interested in this too, as I plan on getting an Athena soon. However, I know that you don't need a "Japanese made handphone". They don't like people using different phones on their network, but they can't really stop you.
Well, they probably can technically stop you, but it is highly unlikely that they will. The reason the sales clerk is telling you it is impossible is probably because there are almost NO unlocked phones in Japan. 99.99% of all phones sold here are branded and locked to a specific carrier.
I am a Hermes user and bought my Hermes through Softbank, a carrier here in Japan. I have since reflashed it hundreds of times and have never had a problem with connecting to the network. I also know others on this board who are Kaiser users who have imported their Kaisers from other countries and are using them on Softbank's system with no problems. There was also a big interest in the mobile device geek community of Japan in the Treo 700w when it first appeared, and I have seen blogs of Japanese guys who have got that running on Softbank's system. So it IS definately possible to run non-Softbank phones on Softbank's network provided you have a valid Softbank SIM.
Some caveats:
I have never seen any carrier here just selling SIMs. You will more than likely have to purchase a phone to get a SIM card.
Voice and SMS (text) should work automatically just by popping in the SIM. Data and MMS are more difficult.
Data
There are two ways of connecting to Softbank's data servers, and each is charged differently. One method uses a public access server, but the charges for using this are quite high. This is the server used for people connecting laptops using cellular modems. The other method allow access under Softbank's tiered and capped system, which is the much cheaper and safer option. The connection settings to access this system are very closely guarded and no one to my knowledge has been able to hack them.
However, there is a workaround. See here: http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=298031
The problem with this workaround is that it requires a program called WIFIwake.exe. And it just so happens that WIFIwake.exe is coded specifically for different machines. On the link above, there is a version for the Universal and a version for the Hermes (the U and H in the .zip file names). Valued member Chaimd hex-edited a file to make it work for Kaiser: http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=328362&highlight=softbank&page=3. And he seemed to think it was a pretty easy job. If asked nicely, he might be able to hex-edit one for Athena too - or not. I don't know.
MMS
MMS is also more difficult to set up. Basically, it requires a program called MMSLite which can be quirky. The only way to know for sure whether it will work with Athena is to try and see I think. And it does NOT work on WM6.1 systems, so you will have to decide between MMS + WM6 or NoMMS + WM6.1. This is the big reason I am thinking of buying the 7501 rather than the 7510.
After some research...
... on some Japanese sites, it seems that a CID unlocked Athena can use the WIFIwake.exe file meant for the Universal.
Also, MMSLite seems to be working as well. So it seems that on the Softbank network at least the Athena can do it all.
Dopod Woes in Japan
Dear Larsuck,
I appreciate your investing so much time and thought to help me. I'm not even remotely savy enough to understand the complexities of your advice but I do gather that buying a Japanese phone is inevitable. Any suggestions for the cheapest? as I'll just use it for local calls and carry my laptop with me when I need other connectivity.

Huh? So you have decided not to the the Athena? There are tons of really cool phones over here that can do many, many different things - but none of them compare to WM in that they aren't as customizable. Go to the Softbank website (English: http://mb.softbank.jp/mb/en/ ) and check them out.
However, if you want to get the Athena, here are two choices:
1) Get the Athena, come to Japan, get a cheap phone (cheap in the relative sense) here, take the SIM card out of it and put it in the Athena. Do some research on this site and get the Athena up and running. Keep the cheap phone just in case the Athena dies.
2) Get the Athena, come to Japan, get an expensive but slightly subsidized phone, unlock it and sell it on ebay. Use the sim card in your Athena and hope it doesn't die.

Unable to make or receive calls

I wonder if anyone can help with a fault on my M3100. So far I've searched this website for answers with no luck. I have Hard Reset the phone, upgraded the Radio, all without any luck.
About 6 days ago my M3100 suddenly stopped being able to make or receive calls. Whenever I try to dial out the call drops out before being established, and if I try to call in to the phone the caller receives a series of beeps.
At first it seems to be a SIM problem, but the Vodaphone SIM is fine in any other phone. If I put my Orange SIM in the phone it just comes up as "No Service".
I'm at the end of the line in what to do and it doesn't seems to make any sense.
Any comments, suggestions, advice or help very much appreciated.
..... Further symptom details:
I can send and receive text message with my Vodaphone SIM installed and access WiFi and GPRS networks. Orange SIM won't connect at all! Both SIMS work fine in a standard phone ! Only clue I can think of here is that the Vodaphone SIM is UMPTS and GSM where the Orange is GSM only. The spare phone I tested them in was GSM only.
Could the GSM part of the M3100 be stuffed ?
I'm stumped for the time being!! It doesn't seem to make any logical sense. Maybe any of you who know the in's and out's of how the device communicates might find some clues in that...
Heeeeelp !
More details..
I've just added a few more details on the symtoms.. maybe the few extra clues might yeild some thoughts from someone !
Have you checked the band selection in Settings > Phone?
Is it possible that the phone could have become blacklisted? How long have you had it? How did you buy it? (This is probably NOT it, since the text still works.)
Have you tried a tweaker to enable HSPDA?
Had the phone for over 12 months so Blacklisted shouldn't be the issue. I've tried all the band selections including Auto but no luck.
Haven't tried the Tweaker... do you have any details on that...
Up until it suddenly stopped working it worked on all networks..
Another possible clue is that I was "Roaming" in France for a month and it was there that I made my last successful call. I have UK SIMS... I have an Australian SIM which I'll try now to see if that makes any difference..
Tried an Australian SIM roaming in the UK ! The service connects on two available networks,Vodaphone and TMobile but not on Orange and O2 (like with the Orange UK SIM). Same fault as the before with the networks it will connect to.
This seems to eliminate the SIM or Network being the fault and isolate the fault to the Device...
probably not the issues, but worth a try?
I live in a very strong 3G + HSPDA ares, but cant make or recieve anycalls tho texts work on T-mobile, i need to have my phone in 2G mode, and calls work fine???
If i leave my house and go a few miles 3G works as it should able to call and recieve etc!
Can't seem to work out how to force the phone onto 2G or 3G ... if anyone can advise I'll give that a try!
I have had very similar problems to this.
Please see my post:
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=325149
I do think this is some sort of network problem as after I posted the issues in the thread above, I left home and travelled about 6 miles and the signal came back and the phone worked fine.
Today, I have been able to make and receice calls but all of a sudden I got cut off from a call then could not make or receive calls (incoming goes straight to voicemail).
I can however use my Orange SIM without problem and both Vodafone and Orange SIMs work fine in other phones.

You can also go into Settings > Phone > Band.
If the band tab does not appear (to the right of the network tab), then you may need to do a registry tweak.
From the very helpful wiki:
Enable/Disable GSM/UMTS Band Selection
Cingular kindly disables anything useful about the network on the 8525. To enable the Band Selection Tab on your Phone settings page, set the following:
[\HKLM\Software\OEM\PhoneSetting\]
"ShowUMTSBandPage"=dword:00000001
To disable, simply clear the value to 0:
[\HKLM\Software\OEM\PhoneSetting\]
"ShowUMTSBandPage"=dword:00000000

Have travelled outside England again this week and... well the phone works fine roaming on my UK Vodaphone SIM. Seems very ODD.. only thing I can put any logic to is a problem with the GSM part of the phone. It's working here in Stockholm on the 3G network no problem.
Anyone advise how I force the phone to be on GSM and 3G so I can test this theory. The BAND settings under SETTINGS>PHONE don't seem to give you this control over how it connects..
Hey i got the same problem anyone solved it yet!
Hi Sunnyb1
Since my last post I returned to England where the phone was useless. No SIM cards would work, some would not register at all but my Vodaphone SIM seemed to register but as before it would not receive calls, nor could I make calls out.
Now I'm in Australia with an Australian SIM card. NO PROBLEMS AT ALL !!
The phone works just fine !!
It's a mystery indeed...
Without any knowledge of the ins & Outs of how a SIM card / Network / and the phone work together it's impossible for me to arrive at any conclusive logic.
Hopefully someone might stand up to the plate and offer some explanation !
Anyone from HTC out there ??????

I got the phone and it was working perfectly on Orange then i tried unlocking it and ever since it has come up with "NO Service" like you everytime i put a Orange Sim in the phone it does not show up.. but when i put a Vodafone sim it works perfectly i tried reflashing the radio's many times
I unlocked this particular phone 6months before this problem showed up so I don't think the Unlock on it's own is the cause. What's particularly baffling is that a SIM may not work with the phone in one country.. but in another it works fine.
..... another country that is !
Hey Steve i have found out what the problem is after hours of research
I found this of another website
Orange & O2:
If you place an active orange or
O2 sim into a blacklisted handset you
phone will not show any signal strength
at all! If the handset is a Nokia then a
"SIM card registration failed" message
will also be displayed. If your handset is an
Ericsson then an "Invalid Mobile" message
will be displayed. For most other manufacturers
the handset will simply show no signal!
Vodafone & T-Mobile
If you place an active Vodafone or T-Mobile sim into a blacklisted handset, the phone will appear to function perfectly UNTIL you try to make an outgoing call. When you try to call out from the handset you will hear a sequence of beeps and then the call will be dropped!!
........
This means the handset you got is stolen or someone has blacklisted it ... i got mine of EBAY! and reading that i figured that it is stolen
It wont work in the UK but it will work everywhere else in the world
Mmmm... that's interesting Sunnyb1. If my phone is blacklisted then happened in JULY this year which was 8 months after I bought the phone. I bought the phone legit .
Can anyone advise what the "Blacklisting" process is.. I assume its done by using the IMEI number.
Who is the rightful owner of a handset and can any phone be blacklisted by anyone, and possibly by mistake ?
Would unlocking the phone from Orange cause a phone to be blacklisted ??
How can you "Un-blacklist" a phone.
Answered my own question here......
This website seems to have the answers
http://www.unlockme.co.uk/blacklist.html
OK... still on this thread. Can anyone advise how you find out which network in the UK has blocked your an IMEI number. I gather any of the UK networks can block any IMEI and it's not unknown for errors to be made. But only the network that blocks the IMEI can Unblock it.
Thought I'd post this before waiting forever for some call centre dimwit to give me the runaround.
Thanks...

XperiaZ Simfree on Softbank

Hi All
Simply put, I have a Softbank flatrate contract for Internet/Calls (Pakehoudai) and was using this with the Pantone 6 (200SH) but I dropped this too hard...display is cracked but its still usable.
I got myself a simfree Xperia Z as replacement anyway. Calls and SMS work fine. MMS I dont care. Mobile Data however is also not working. I tried lots of APN settings already including andoworld, plus.softbank, smile.world but they wouldnt work. The APN setting sin the old phone are not viewable/changeable by default. I recently found through an APN backup app that the actual APN is fourgsmartphone. However, this also didn't do it. Has anyone experience with this kind of APN ? I belive it might be some device specific APN maybe.
Regards
Stefan
Try the open.softbank APN. That's what I use
Sent from my Nexus 7 using XDA Premium HD app
Hmm, I think I also tried that one. Will check again after I return to Japan this WE.
tried that one again. No luck. I think my SIM uses yet another "special" APN for SB newest 4G smartphones.
This is an old thread but I ran across it in my searches so others may too.
If your apn is fourgsmartphone, which I think is pretty common, then your apn user and pass are specific to your sim card. Only 2 or three phones have been found to have "hacks" that allow you to access those values. At least that's all I have found in the last day searching. Off hand one of those phones is the huawei 201m.
Good luck to us all. I might just end up buying a used huawei just to find out the code. If that's the case I'll post if it works
That was also my last finding. Sorry should have posted it. The UN and PW are somewhere on the SIM card, but I dont know how to read them. If my Japanese was better I'd try some of those Otaku shops in my town and see if they can find out.
Still have no mobile data. But i found, I spent 90% of my time close to WLAN I can live with it. :highfive:

Thanks for the post on this i just moved to Japan and bought the Pantone 6 just to use my unlocked Xperia ZL but after a lot of research the "siliver" colored USim cards have the username and password specific for each sim card. You mention that the UN and PW is on the sim card my wife is Japanese so i'll ask her if she can find the UN or PW if there is any on the sim card.
Did anyone find one of the phones where we can see all APN settings? Or is there Japanese shops I can go to to assist me with using my Xperia ZL on Softbank network? If i put my sim in my ZL i can make calls and use MMS but no internet connection.
Thanks again.

Primod8080,
First, welcome to Japan and it's quasi-monopoly spoiled network operators.
I dont know if I mentioned before, I also got the Pantone 6 SIM and it is still not working in my Xperia Z Simfree for mobile data. Phone and SMS is fine. The UN and PW for the softbank APN should be stored on the SIM. To read them out you dont need Japanese language skills, but rather an app or SIM-to-PC connection and a program. I also have a Japanese wife, but she is not interested in hacking SIMs. Maybe your wife is ? Let me know. There are shops in the electronics district (e.g. Akihabara) that offer mobile data related services, maybe they can help you for a fee.
Meanwhile, you can abuse the Pantone 6 as a mobile Wifi router via the thethering app, if that is in your contract. Also some, but not all Softbank Wifi hotspots in shops will accept your Xperia ZL/softbank SIM.
What I will do in the near future is get a bmobile SIM without contract or phone. Stupid Softbank.
Greetings
Stefan
Thanks...

Sorry for the late responce finally found work as an English teacher here so didn't get a chance to come on xda for a while. I did figure a way to use my xperia zl on softbank's network but i had to buy softbank motorola razr m201 once i got it i installed an apk file that someone made specifically for the m201 that will get the unique username and password once i got that everything was fine. I got the phone off yahoo auction with the help of my wife she did the translation.

hello sir. i can see that you are using softbank phones. i have a softbank 200SH but was locked out cold due to too many pattern attempts when my nephew tried to guess my pattern. my problem is i dont know the hard reset method for this device. i cant access it trhoug ADB and fastboot because i disabled the usb debugging mode to prevent unauthorized access if it gets lost. any idea on how to hard reset this device sir?
