Hero on O2 pay and go? - Hero, G2 Touch General

Hi all, im thinking about getting either the Hero or the touch Diamond 2 sim free which i have seen going for about £400 (Hero that is) and would like to use an O2 pay and go sim with it.
Question is can anybody using an O2 pay and go sim give me any feedback as regards compatability, call quality and access to the internet etc?
I have read that the settings are pulled to the phone from the sim when you first power up, but would help if an actual user could confirm this for me as its a lot of money to spend as you can appreciate.
A friend of mine recently bought a sim free Diamond 2 used from E Bay and tried several sims in it only to find that it could not connect to any network, however it later turned out that the phone had been reported lost/stolen and some sort of block put on it. Luckily he got his money back but it throws up the question for me wether there may be an O2/ HTC sim incompatability as O2 dont officialy support this manufacturers devices.
Any feedback would be appreciated, im a new member and this would be my first smartphone so please be gentle lol.
Many thanks.

I had my O2 sim in my Sim free Hero for a week with no problems what so ever.

I'm using an O2 pay-monthly SIM with no problems, all the settings were done automatically. Haven't tried a pay and go but I reckon you'll be okay.

Great new guys many thanks for the replies

Wot happens to sour cream when it goes off?
did u buy you exec from O2 on a contract and use the suplied sim card with it ?
yes
sorry miss read question
i used my old sim card
thats why then, your old sim is only 2g equipped, dont ask, its O2 there bein total [email protected] about it, aparently to use O2 3G you have to purchase an O2 3G phone which will come with the new sim called a USIM, most other networks actually sell these new sims or allow the older type to use the 3G dunno why o2 has to b awkward.
if ya dont wana use this new O2 sim of yours u send it my way
phone was an upgrade, so have not got a new sim just my old one that i have had for 4 upgrades now
get onto o2 then n see what they say, you'll probly get screwed over n told to fek off but there bound to get enough complaints sooner or later to make them start selling the usim in the shops...
definately need a new USIM (with 3GP towards the end of the sim number).
Also check your predicted UMTS coverage online.
nah just phone o2 up and say that the sim card you have isn't compatible with the exec, and that they provided the upgrade, they should have checked that it was compatible, so essentially either they replace the sim free of charge, or you send the phone back.
tbh, it shouldn't even get that far, just by saying that you want to make 3g calls and that your sim card is not compatible with 3g should be enough for them to send you out a replacement. After all, they are always giving sim cards away for free, payg granted, but surely they will look after their contract customers better... at least they did for me a few years back when the Nokia 8210 was all the rage and my old sim card then refused to work with it, they sent out a replacement free of charge, arrived next day too.
Assuming you're in the UK o2 will provide you with a new 3G sim card free of charge - all that is involved is to port your account to the new card (occurs within 24 hrs after you arrange it) - your phone will be fully operational (minus 3G obviously) up until the transfer to the new sim card actually occurs.
The o2 upgrade procedure very clearly states that all customers upgrading to a 3G handset should be given a new sim card - that applies to o2's own retail stores and o2 online - if you got it from a third party company (P4U, Carphone, MobileShop etc) they may insist you charge.
There are actually pretty good system reasons why they do not just enable 3G on existing sim cards (which in theory is possible) - it's to your benefit to get the newer simcard as it has minor improvements to make them more future-proof.
Hope this clears things up

Hi
I had to ring o2 to get a 3G Sim card and it was F.O.C, or you can go in to any o2 shop and pay £4 for a sim if you dont want to wait 3 - 4 days
@ nosdrahcir
never knew that, but I suppose it makes sense, as then it means that the customer will have not have to ring up if the old sim card is not compatible, but then again, I think they don't send new ones on upgrades to save money, and only send out replacements to those who actually need it.
in 3 years of owning an XDA this is the first time i have had to post a problem, i usually just read other posts to solve them.
Thanks to everyone who replied
got it sorted now
phoned o2 and they are sending me one out today

NewZealand Vodafone SimCard not working ...

Hey guys,
I finally got my P3600 send over from Europe ... (none branded HTC Version... so no Vodafone Lock or so) However, if I insert my German SIM it will be recognized, but if I do the same with my NewZealand Vodafone Prepaid it jsut tells me that there isn't any SIM inserted Both Sims work fine with my German Nokia so I am not sure what the problem is.
Does anybody have a similar problem or know how to fix this?
help really appreciated

Hi rodpacker
Welcome to the short list of members with a P3600 in NZ
Unfourtunatley I can't help you at the moment, I have a VFNZ OnAccount SIM that works fine, I guess I could try out my missus PrePaid SIM if you still can't get it to work after a couple of retries.
If you live in Auckland you could rock into CoolMobile or ETown, they were selling P3600's for a while and may have come across issues with PrePaid SIMs.
Not that it would make any difference, but do you have a SIM2 or older SIM card, and what size KB is it? Also I presume you have credit on it....
I had a similar problem when attempting to use my old China Mobile SIM, and got it sorted by getting the later version SIM card.
hm, good to hear that there is some others
I got a vodafone prepaid I bought like two months ago....Not sure which version it is. It says 128k and 3G on it. Does that tell u guys anything?
thanx heaps for ur help...
and jep I am in Auckland. Although got two p3600's and gonna sell one of em soon ... brand new!
How much where they when they were sold over here?
cheers
Rodpacker
tried another prepaid .... still no luck
last night I thought I might have to unlock my phone and it wasn't unlocked as I thought, however after ur message concerning NZ SimCards I doublechecked again and after using a German Medion Simcard, that worked I tried a UK O2 prepaid and that worked as well...I even got roaming going...So I guess I can save myself the hazzle of reunlocking the device...
Now could u maybe give me some more hints on the problem with NZ Vodafone Simcards?
thanx
Rodpacker
Hi rodpacker
A 128k 3G SIM should work. Have you tried your new SIM in another phone to make sure it's not a dud?
The P3600's were going for around $1200-1300 (NZD). Not sure why they stopped selling them (maybe because they wern't selling ). I got mine imported from the states for $800NZD delivered in box with warranty, so that's what you would be competing with to sell your spare.
jep card is working in my other phone atm ...
thanx for the price info...
good to know. Still busy skinning mine with the iphone skin and ipod player...since touchFlow isn't out for our model yet... will go to those shops u were talking about tomorrow
cheers
Rodpacker
Hi Rodpacker,
Sorry for my english..
about your problem, I remember a forum with a boy with similar problem...Can you try to speak about your (NZ) vodafone customer service. If i remember well the cust.serv unblocked a sim...
If I have not understand your problem, sorry
Bye
I think I'm about the only one who actually bought a P3600 retail in NZ, at the time it would have cost more to get it in from overseas...
But I'm probably not much help, my SIM is also on account - and is an ancient one as well! Was one of the original SIMs before the days of SIM2...
What radio version does your one have on it? Go to Start->Settings->System->Device Information to check. I've had issues with one of the later radio versions (1.46.x) in NZ, accepted the SIM ok but couldn't receive any calls. Currently using v1.38 which seems to work ok.
The radio ROM talks to the SIM, so this could be the issue.

CID unlock HTC Magic A6161

Hi guys!
I've been reading (and searching) around the android device forums (dream, magic, hero) and I still can't find a helpful entry on where to unlock ng Smart Telecom locked (Philippines) Magic A6161 unit. I've tried 2 sites but both issued non working system / network unlock codes. This is really depressing.
I read within the Hero forums regarding the unlock method using a modified serial - mini usb cable. will this work for the magic? Or better yet, can anyone help me unlock the unit? Thanks so much
shoktong
your thoughts on this, guys?
im also encountering the same problem i have a htc magic phone locked to smart and also tried 3 different sites and all of them have a wrong code.
if you find a site that can give the correct code, can you share it?
the phone is with me for over a month now and i still can't find a website that can supply the right code.
Look for member Olipro (Legend!) he may be able to help
same problem
I also encountered the same problem.
unlock code purchased online didn't work for my Smart communication's HTC Magic. Really need alternate solution for this.
i want to use Globe sim card on my Magic, and switch my Smart sim card to other phone.
Smart don't have unlimited surfing plan, using Smart sim card on HTC magic really killing me.
Last month billing cost me PHP 26,000 (around 550 USD).
they charged PHP 10 (0.2 USD) for each internet connection. Imagine if you have more than 30 mails per day. Push a mail cost you PHP 10, and cost you another PHP 10 to read and reply. This will cost me total of PHP 20 just read and reply a mail.
Although Smart Communication provide PHP 10 / 30 min internet connection charge, but this doesn't work with push mail and using some application required internet connection.
WOW $550! That's insane!
Sorry I can't help but I have a bit of an OT question.
I'm planning to go to the Philipines this comming June and I was wondering what would be the best company for me to deal with during my visit. Since my HTC Magic is from Canada i believe the 3G bands are incompatible so really I'm looking at basic texting, airtime minutes for about a month long stay.
Any update if you have successfully unlocked your HTC Magic A6161 from Smart?
Please help us
i found a solution... you dont need to unlock the phone.
when i went to greenhills to have my phone unlocked for the 5th time and still no code available. One of the technicians offered me to use an ex sim. It looks like a generic sim card thats transparent that you put under the sim card of any brand. For me i use Globe. Try it. it costs P1200 much less compared to the price they were offering me when they said that it takes P2500 to unlock the phone.
Hope this will help!

Where I can buy it?
I write to Smart, and there say:
Dear Sir Victor,
Thank you for constantly communicating with us.
We understand your sentiments regarding your request to provide you with the network code. However as previously discussed, unlocking your handset is not encouraged so as not for you to encounter handset problems in the future.
In case you would still want to unlock your phone, any Service Centers in your location can assist you with this matter.
Sir Victor, we hope this information helps.
If you have other concerns or queries, please feel free to email us again.
Sincerely,

when i called smart they told me that they dont offer any unlocking service for the unit so i just went to greenhills shopping center. theres a place there where people sell and repair celphones. Tell them your phone is locked to smart and you have tried codes on the internet and it doesnt work. Ask for an ex sim. and try it on your phone.
Dear friends I live in Russia
we don't have "greenhills"
may be another solutions?
I'd take a look on Dealextreme
It's a China based technology shop where you can find the "smart sim", which is a generic phone unlocking card. You put it between the sim connector on your phone and the sim card you want to use, and it's supposed to unlock the phone. If you take it out, the phone remains locked, but as long as you keep it inside, the phone will act as unlocked.
The "smart sim" cards are supposed to work on several brands, and are quite inexpensive. If it works on your phone, it's a good, and very cheap, solution to the unlocking problems. There are several models, and the latest ones should be working with your phone.
Good luck.
I guess its confirmed then. You can't network unlock an HTC Magic from Smart. I just bought a code and it does not work at all. They said that they checked and double checked and the code they gave me is correct. Oh well, probably gonna sell this unit and Greenhills as a downpayment on an openline unit.

Faulty diamond 2?

Hi
I have just bought a diamond 2.
I have put my SIM card in and when I switch the phone on it comes up saying the SIM is missing. I have tried cleaning the SIM and re-inserting and even padding out with some paper. Unfortunately none of this has worked and the phone remains just as useless to me.
Apparently it is SIM-locked to O2, I am using a working O2 SIM. Does this mean that it might be SIM-locked to someother network or is it a hardware fault or could it be something else?
I have tried plenty of searching but that has yielded nothing so far.
Thanks for any answers
Jim
Hi
Have you bought this second hand? Perhaps it is locked for contract use and you are using Pay As You Go? It might also have been reported stolen and deactivated.
Do you know the SIM works, have you tried it in another phone?
Options are, try another O2 SIM, if that doesn't work contact O2 and ask them to check it, they might be able to tell you why the phone isn't accepted on their network. Alternatively contact the seller maybe?
If it is new of course take it back to the O2 shop and get them to check it, it could well be faulty.
Regards
Phil
Thanks for your response Phil
I have tried 2 different working O2 SIM's in the phone and they both don't work.
I'm thinking that because its saying SIM is missing it is not seeing the SIM as opposed to it being SIM-locked.
I have contacted the seller and he insists that it worked fine on O2.
I am really dissapointed as I was really looking forward to using this phone
I had exactly the same when I first powered up my TD2 - and I know my SIM worked.....
I found that I cleaned the sim by running on my t-shirt (obvious) - and then reinserted - with the same problem....
Then I pushed the card hard in both lateral and vertical directions - push the end of the sim towards the edge of the phone and then push down on the sim - it didnt even look like it moved to me - but when I put the battery back in - presto it worked.....
I'll give that a try, thanks
no joy with that.
Thankfully the seller has offered me a refund, just need to buy another one sharpish

Selling hero for £150

I am thinking of selling my hero for round £150 because i can just not sort out the problem it has so maybe some1 with abit more knowledge will be able to sort it. It all works fine apart from the problem with the sim card which is for some reason it does not register any sim cards. The phone is unlocked and i was using a 3 sim card in for about 2 months but then all of a sudden i lost connection and then i could not reconnect with any sim card =/ i have tried different firmwares and radios but nothing seems to help. It certainly isn't barred i know that so i really duno what is up with it but would be a bargin for someone who does know. P/M if your interested
It ssems like phone has been blocked.Did you buy it from previous user? Contact him/her , or the branded supplier with imei number for their explanation.
no it use to be on contract but had a problem and came off but it hadn't been blocked by them i was using it for a while after i had come off use to work fine then it just did this. I have heard there are problems with 3 sim cards sometimes thow so wondering if it was the sim cause other sims just get stuck on the registering bit like the sim unlock hasn't worked
Just curious, but why haven't you contacted whoever you bought the phone off?
Definitely sounds to me like the handset has been barred. If you bought it as part of a contract, but then cancelled the contract early, well it makes sense for the operator to bar the handset if you didn't send it back.
Quick call to 3 (assuming that's who you bought it from) should give you an answer.
no its a tmobile i shall ring them tomorrow see what they say
Wavesecure in ROM, allowing to lock / locate / wipe your device remotely in the event of loss and be notified if the SIM is changed.
that doesn't really solve none working sims though does it ?
iv just paid for an imei check and just waiting for the result now
this phone is blocked by tmobile but not by other networks that is why it registers on tmobile but wont make calls or texts so am wondering if its something to do with the unlock code iv put in =/
