I just moved to the new hotness, a Vibrant. So I sold my G1 to a colleague at work.
The speaker phone had been going out, and he knew that. However, now the external speaker is not working at all. This means it doesn't ring, and alarms don't work.
Anyone have experience replacing the speaker? Is there any chance I could put my SIM in the phone, take it to a store and do an insurance swap (paying the deductible, of course)? Any other ideas to fix the issue?

Replacing the speaker is actual simple its not hard to really do, But you can do option 2, at least you might get a new phone and all
Any disassembly vids you can point me to?

My speaker stopped working on my Vogue. It just happened over night one day and it didn't bother me at first but now its getting annoying. No ring or speaker phone or sound on videos. Now that I'm using Android full time I'd like to be able to hear the videos that were so choppy in WM but are perfect with Android.
Any suggestions? don't know where to start. Was gonna get a new phone but that was before Android was flashable. I can spend $50 on a deductible thru insurance but if there's a way to fix this for less I'd like to try it.
Thanks

it very well could be that the speaker could have come unplugged from the board. i would take the phone apart before paying the 50 bucks but thats me...not sure if breaking the void speaker will ruin insurance, well i guess you could say you lost it and pay the 50 bucks
Thanks. Yeah I guess I should try that first. Was wondering if others had that happen to them. Do I need any special tools to take the phone apart? Never tried before.
Took phone apart to check speaker but it seems to be well connnected. It wasn't a plug though. Just two contacts that are pressed against the board. The contacts are good and clean. Anyone know how I can get a speaker? Just found out if I place another insurance claim I get dropped for 12mo. I plan, on getting a new phone (HTC Passion if it actually comes to VZW ) in the spring but would really like my speaker to work til then. Not to mention I want insurance on my new phone
Hey recently it sounds like the speaker on my phone (the in call speaker, not the speakerphone) is blown and sounds like its crackling. Has anyone else seen this problem. I have taken apart my phone a few times to clear out the dust, so I'm not sure if I could take it to a store at this point. Any suggestions would be great. Right now I'm using a Bluetooth for calls, because its so annoying.

I had the same problem... taking it apart and blowing the dust out of the little speaker component with some air duster seems to have solved the issue for now.
I wish I could find a replacement since it is so easy to do, but I have not located a source. Next time I am in China I am going to have to find one of the cell phone parts malls and pick up some of the speakers and other components.
The other thing is that the phone hasn't been out a year, so it is still under manufacturer warranty if you want to deal with that.
This happened to me. I took the phone to a Sprint store and they ordered me a new one for free. No questions asked. I wouldn't take your phone to them rooted though.
Sounds like this is a design flaw in our phone...or at least bad hardware.
I took mine in to the Sprint store with both the crackling speaker and dust under the screen. I have befriended one of the techs, there. He replaced mine with a Hero that had been a 30-day return phone. They had checked it over. It had fewer minutes and less data sent/received, than the one I took in had, when I got it off craigslist.
Just curious, though. For those who have used air duster on theirs, did you also have the "dust under the screen" problem?
Just take it to the Sprint Store with 1.5 loaded and they will give you a refurbished one. But I do have insurance. Literally took ten minutes.

I was thinking about doing this, but i have already opened up the hero to clean out dust, thus breaking the "white tape" on one of the screws that holds the housing together. so they will be able to see that i have "tampered" with it. Any suggestions on where to get the "white tape" to cover it back up?
I think my speaker is defective. I made sure silent mode was not on and I turned volume up on everything. I've tested ringtone, speakerphone, and Avatar. No sound at all!!! I tried a soft reset. That did nothing. Pretty sure speaker is DOA. Is there anything else I can try?
Try a Factory Reset. Settings > Privacy > Factory Data Reset
Or go to a corp Tmo store and tell them to "Take this #@$% back and give me another one" . No but why waste your time. There is already known issues with the phone im sure that Tmo will be more then happy to swap them out.... but before you leave the store TEST IT!
umm yeah just return it..
Try a reset. If it's still not working it's broken obviously. The speaker has great sound quality compared to a lot of others..
I say even if it does work after the reset, return it. What would you do if it worked for 14 days and then died again? Pay the insurance for a new one?
Speaker is definitely broken. I bought it on Ebay, and not through T-Mobile unfortunately. Don't think they will swap it out in the store. I did buy it brand new. I just had the misfortune of getting a defective phone. Everything else works great. I actually had Avatar playing. I took the battery cover off and tapped the speaker with my finger and it all of a sudden started working for a few seconds. Seems to be some sort of short. Just my luck

As long as there is no water damage it's obviously still under warranty, and they should swap it out. Not exactly sure how that would work out with all phones being under the remorse period though (they quickly directed me back to where I bought it for an exchange).
Is there a possibility of me walking into a T-Mo store and getting it swapped out even though I didn't buy it from them? The guy shipped me a brand new factory sealed phone. It wasn't like I bought it used from him. I don't really use the external speaker often at all. My phone is ALWAYS on silent mode and I very rarely watch videos or listen to music. BUT.... It still would be nice to have if I need it.

You'd need a receipt at the very least if it wasn't bought on your account.
I contacted Samsung and they are going to fix it for free. Thank god for mfg. warranty. I don't really have a problem sending this out and waiting a couple weeks for it to come back. Still got my Nexus One
Awesome to hear, and kudos to Samsung.
I think this is worth a mention. I shipped my phone to Samsung last Tuesday. They received it on Friday. I was shocked when they e-mailed me this afternoon to tell me that they have already replaced the part and shipped it back to me today! I think it's great that they took care of this so quickly. I've had some very bad experiences with some other companies when it comes to warranty (no names mentioned). This is by far the best experience I've had. I probably should wait until I receive the phone and make sure the speaker is working before I post this. But they have kept me well informed. They gave me their diagnosis of the problem and told me that they replaced the entire part. I'm very happy with Samsung thus far!
.
I have bought a slide off ebay and tmobile has replaced 2 of them already. Not sure if samsung is the same was as HTC but ya if all else fails try that out

My girl has the slide, I told her to just wait for vibrant lol. That thing is acting up all the time, she's on her third one. Always 3g issues, texts wont send, etc. I've had that before, but its all behind now with the vibrant lol. Not to mention it is way faster.

That should not be a solution at all after paying $200 - $500 on a device you should have all parts working. "Knocking" on it is ridiculous.
The vibrant is not the highest build quality but I certainly wouldn't call it poor. Defects happen all the time every company has defects. Samsung replaced it for him. All is well.
Well considering price I think its poor. For example volume button is also loose it rattles all the time, and I would prefer they make it from metal but then it wouldn't be so light. Otherwise its a great phone.can't wait for froyo.

the phone isn't perfect and everyone knows that. some are manufactured badly, no different than any other phone company on the planet. That's why we have the warranty. It's a year both on the phone and the battery. Note the latter.
I've actually been pleased with the build quality... to each their own. I can't think of another phone I owned and thought, Wow, this is so much better built than my Vibrant. Ha
My speaker first my evo4g has been blown for a few months now and haven't been able to find a reasonably priced replacement, so today I searched again and found this guide:
http://www.ifixit.com/Guide/Repair/Installing-HTC-Evo-4G-Rear-Speaker/3067/1/
Replacement speakers are available for only 13 bucks @Www.evospeakers.com
Or additionally ebay sells for 15 bucks.
*update. I finally replaced my speaker after having to return the first one due to shipping damage.
It was easier than I thought replacing it. The only issue, was that you had to remove the foam surround on the rear of the bad speaker because the new speaker doesn't have this and it won't work unless its on there.
But besides that its a 5 min procedure with detailed info available that helped me replace my blown (due to water damage) Evo speaker.

Why not just take it to sprint? They will replace the speaker for free.

Rooting and flashing custom roms voids your warranty.
Getting an inferior refurbished phone is not what I want.
Cost 13 bucks and takes 10 min
Do I need to list more reasons?

No, they will actually remove the old speaker and put a new one in. As far as rooting goes, just nandroid your current setup and flash Sprint Lovers or Joey Krim's roms.
I just had my fixed a week ago. I have the same phone, it was rooted, they replaced the speaker. I flashed a "stock" looking rom before i took it in. Just restored it back as i walked out with my fixed phone.
Yea this (and most phones) come with a 1 year warranty anyway, of which the speaker is covered under.
Just take it to a sprint repair center and they will either replace the speaker or the entire back half of the phone but you shouldn't get a refurb.
I already had to get my speaker replaced once, it was a simple no questions asked procedure.
A blown speaker is not a software problem. Rooting should have nothing to do with it. I have had my screen replaced due to dust under the glass, and then I had the plastic cover over the camera lens replaced. Both times I took the phone in running Fresh and Riptide's theme. Nothing was said about it. Well, one of the techs asked me how I was getting such good battery life.
I took mine in for blown speakers, was told board has water damage. Still have 2 blown speakers.

+1 same thing here they could careless that the phone is rooted.
Really seems to be a common problem...
I took my 0003 to Sprint yesterday for the earpiece speaker being blown. They were going to replace the speaker for me, but I was told they didn't have any older-style speakers in stock. They're going to mail me a phone now. I'm not sure whether that means refurb or new though. I unrooted before I went there to avoid complications.

No you dont...since your reasons are pointless.
Makes me feel a little better reading this, mine is also blown on a 003. I will be taking it in for repair next week.
They wound up sending me a refurbished 0003.

I bought an evo from somebody on Craigslist and then had a guy flash it to cricket, then I realized the phone had a bad ear speaker. The person who flashed the evo tells me that if I can get a friend (with a Sprint phone) to activate my evo in their account then after a couple of days they could take it in to have it fixed. Does anybody know if that would be truth? I wouldn't want to have a friend go to the trouble for nothing..
Thanks in advance if anybody can help me!

Idk if its covered unless you purchased
It from sprint. Possibly they won't know but I'm not sure.
You could get insurance but then would pay a deductible
Replacing the speaker is cheap an easy. No soldering required.

Why would you take the Evo to cricket? Ive used cricket before for a year and it sucked balls
I thought my speaker was blown tonight, but I just blew on it for a little bit and now it works.. Must have been a piece of dust or something in there... We will see how long til it screws up again..
I got the T-Mobile version on the nexus 4 from a guy off of craigslist and I don't have handset insurance on my phone plan...
So my phone had an accident when one of my friends spilt soda on my phone. I put it in a bag of rice for a couple of hours (turned off of course) and it all seemed fine. Except the fact when I play games I can't hear any sound and when I call I can't hear anything either. But the bottom speaker seems fine. I can hear ringtones and speakerphone.
So my question is am I screwed and need to buy a new phone? Cause I done told my friend she owes me

FYI, there is no T-Mobile version of the LG Nexus 4. They are all the same version, TMO just happens to sell it in their stores for more money.
Look locally for a repair shop. Have them take the unit apart and clean it.
When soft drinks are spilled the liquids evaporate but the sugars and other contents can stay behind and cause problems. The fact that the speaker works with some apps and not others can be deemed as good but ultimately you need to get the crap out of the inside of the phone before it causes more damage.
