Froyo Rooting Workaround Needed - EVO 4G General

As much as we say don't accept system updates, there are people who will still do it.
Or people who have no option because they got the phone after 8/2/2010.
Let's start talking about workarounds.
I'm assuming the flash lite method has been patched up.
Considering that was a pretty darn slick method I'm not sure that we can pull through with a new exploit!

I'm sure it will be more of an issue once the Evo is sold with Froyo on it.
For now, its not since users were warned many times about the update breaking root.
I have faith in the developers. I just don't feel sorry for current users that updated, knowing the risks involved with any updates. However, I will feel bad for those that buy the Evo with Froyo pre-installed.

I did the OTA (first one) and don't need you to feel sorry for me. I knew what I was doing and am fine with doing it. I will patiently wait for root when it is available. No worried that they won't find it. they always do.
I think more importantly is to stop asking them for it. They will get it done when they get it done. It is kind of an accomplishment to be the one to post the root. Someone will find it. Trust me, they are on it and they will find it when they do.
So...let's all stop asking.

use the unlockr's 1 click root. It's the fastest way to do it. Or you could go the old fashioned way and create a gold card and do it that way.
If your confused by what root is, and why you need it:
Root is just a name for the super user or administrator login account (the root account). This is what the main account has been called forever in *nix operating systems since the beginning 30+ years ago.
It is the login that has all privileges like read/write to all directories and can start any process(well almost) that it wants.
The reason you would want this would be for things like tethering where you need to run processes that make direct hardware calls and have access to things like iptables / ipchains (the ability to reroute internet traffic). Other things would be like backup your entire phone or run apps from your sd card.
Hope that helps a little.
read the threads, wiki's and stickys in the sapphire and dream forums. all your answers are there. you should make sure you know what your doing before you start hacking your phone, things can get kinda messy if you don't know the proper procedures.
Im dead serious when i say "dont get one"
TMobile is putting out poor android devices, and they're putting out a lot of them. If you have the $250 credit wait until they realize that their competition is putting out fewer and far superior Android devices. The MyTouch is the G1 with a bit more ROM, if TMO wants to stay in the game they're going to have to come out with more than the MT3G/Cliq/Moment/Behold, these phones are geared toward the junior school girl demographic and these are all devices with inferior hardware. I kick myself everyday when i have to shamefully take this bush-league MyTouch out of my pocket in public. Seriously though, the HTC Magic is a good, capable phone, the HTC MyTouch is a joke with no punchline. Dont make the same mistake I did, TMO is a very large company, they will figure it out sooner or later. Although they did have a two year jump on the Android market and immediately after their competition released there respective first phones they were far ahead of tmobile. Actually, maybe they wont ever get it

I don't regret getting my MyTouch at all, how are you ashamed of taking it out in public? Everybody that's seen my phone likes it a lot. Sure the name might be stupid but overall the phone itself is very nice.
I love my MT3G, and so far IMO its the best android Tmobile has to offer. The cliq is not bad spec-wise, and its still a baby and we have yet to see, if any, its potential. I love the G1 too, it turns heads still but its just too big for me with the fat battery for everday use. As far as dud phones go I've unlocked plenty of high end At&t phones to use on Tmobile with no problem, or you could always switch carriers and when you cancel your service tell them that's why so they know. Hopefully Tmobile or At&t will get the magic by next summer so I can get my hands on one myself.
the main thing is if your unsure about rooting it don't do it, when your unsure of things that leads you too make stupid mistakes which will always lead to a brick
rooting your phone is quite stressful (even when you understand it) because you never know when it might just not turn back on...
my suggestion to you is simple....
your unsure now so the best way to go about it is doing your research until your 110% sure of what you are doing
rooting isn't just going to disappear tomorrow, and that gives you plenty of time to research and understand before you make a bricking mistake
and what does ive kinda done a g1 before mean?
you should really try to be more specific with your questions...
i.e.:
look over the rooting process and ask questions based on the parts you are confused about
tell us exactly what you have done before so people know what areas you would need help (not kinda sorta done type questions)
research research research; 1 mistake = a ugly paperweight
...besides that good luck
^^^^^^^^^^^ what he said, i've been researching this rooting thing for some weeks now and i am only going to get my magic on thursday, so i am now pretty comfortable with the rooting thing and i don't even have the phone. When i get my phone i'm not even going to root it right away, i wanna have some time to really use it in its default state so that when i do root it i'm gonna hav a better apprecitaion for the power that rooting will give to me!!!!

Hah, I did the same thing with my G1, except I was only scared to root it at first, even with all that I knew and then it took me the whole night to actually finish the rooting process itself.

Relocking the bootloader : Phone for Geohot

Hi guys,
I am sure you all know about geohot (http://iphonejtag.blogspot.com/)
I am sure we there was a reliable/safe way to go back to S=ON and a locked bootloader state + warranty, the modding community and thus, the Android community indirectly, would expand like never before. That's one of the reasons behind the huge ass success of the iPhone jailbreak community. Infact, we have got it relatively easy when we compare it to the amount of work it takes them (with every iPhone OS release) to defeat's Apple protection and 'JB' the devise. Since all it takes is a restore to stock F/W to erase all signs of any 'software' jailbreak, they do not loose 'hardware' warranty by just running a custom program on the phone.
I have contacted George over email and requested him to look at the problem we are facing. He has agreed to look into it if we can give him a Nexus One. I mean, a collective $530 is a very small price to pay when it comes to restoring hardware warranty to a army of phones which were only rooted to install more capable programs
What do you guys think? Should we collect donations and send a phone over to George Hotz? There is no guarantee that we will get a solution... but if anyone can approach it from a hardware perspective... it is him.
Do let me know your thoughts... (and please don't mind the various grammatical mistakes... I just woke up and saw Geohot's email... hence posted this asap.)
Regards,
KiD0M4N
I dont think this is a good idea. Geohot is a great iphone dev but he has no experience whatsoever on android or HTC bootloaders. There are much better devs for this type of work.

Just give it some time bro. I bet you someone will find a way. If there is an option to unlock your bootloader through a ui, i dont think it will be THAT hard to manipulate that to relock your bootloader. I mean, there are devs like NCommander that have tackled much harder projects such as reverse engineering the eclair camera drivers for the G1/MT3G.

Well that guy is also responsible for the virgin iPhone unlock(from OS 1.0 days.) But care to suggest some other names?

I am all for giving it time, we need to do something to get the attention of them brainies.
Its kinda sad though... HTC did a wonderful job making it easy to root the devise, but them fugged it all up by a all or nothing warranty statement. It would be fine if they would apply it for obvious mis use cases, but such a blanket statement only hurts the community.
And honestly speaking, it it wasn't for the XDA community, i would not have even thought of getting the Nexus One.
i think if geohot gets an android device he would probably be able to help us re-lock the boot loader, and maybe even more things we did not know about android.
we are a week into the life of the nexus one and you already want to pay for outside help?
give it time... we had the thing rooted before it even came out for christ sakes...

Rooters are beta testers

I think it's all a plot by HTC and Verizon.
Leak the OTA and Froyo and get you all the find the bugs, because you can't complain to them about all the bugs. Then all the DEV's fix it for them and they take all the credit when they finally make an official release.
I have thought this for a while and have mentioned it.
What better way to beta test your stuff with the largest possible group....
"leaked" HA
who better to test then the best?
I agree with this concerning the "leak". I learned my lesson with "leaks" with my Eris, and won't ever install one again.
Root on the other hand is great, as of right now, I can always downgrade back to "stock" at all time if something happens to get a replacement, and I get to have 2.2 early the same as the leaks, best of both worlds, just wish we had the engineering bootloader.
Haha I was just thinking the same thing today while updating to 2.2.
Instead of paying a team to do it release a "leaked" version and have us do all the testing lol

Yea a lesson can be learned.
Most issues are people don't read or have proper know how. If you can't use ADB, don't root.
I hate when you post something on here and everyone gets their panties in a bunch. "OMGZOR the noobs will brickz their phonez." "OMG the cellphone companies will patch it!!"This is supposed to be a development website and contributing knowledge to everyone is best. I am tired of everyone hiding stuff from the community which halts development. just put a nice big disclaimer in red. You are going to release some hack eventually that will get patched. If you release 1, 2, 3, etc weeks early, it doesnt matter. It is going to take them time before they release a patch, IF they even fix that hole for that device. They may just patch it on future devices, but even so, releasing something early isn't going to instantly cause an issue or make HTC patch it faster. I think the biggest issue is the people want credit for what they do and get mad about posting stuff. People were pissed at me for posting how to apply the leaked OTA and how to do a temp nand unlock.
"We take no responsibility for what you do with this. This could possibly brick your phone if you are unable to follow directions"
We all know we take risks when applying this kind of stuff. If you screw up once, maybe you are lucky and are insured, but next time you will be more careful. A lesson lived is a lesson learned.
Well this is somewhat true as some root users also submit entries to the official Android codebase to fix issues, but those people make up a small number of rooted users.

The truth about the bootloader

http://www.vampii.com/dcom/componen...-x-bootloader-already.html/blogger/czerdrill/
Indeed I saw a presentation from a guy who worked for a major phone hardware company recently about recent advances in 'locking down' hardware. They are getting better and closing more loopholes with every generation. 2048-bit encryption, complete trust chains, burying sensitive traces, chip-swapping detection and on and on. Even digging right into the hardware it is getting harder and harder to find weaknesses if the manufacturer is determined to lock something down.
If you look at older phones like Droid X and Milestone that still haven't cracked there is almost no chance the Atrix has a weakness unless someone majorly goofed or there is a leak.
Well there is one 4th option that I think that what devs are trying to do and, IMO, is the real meaning of cracking: Finding a security hole and exploit it.
But as haloimplant already mentioned that's highly unlike to happen...
Unfortunately nothing said was news to me. I gave up a long time ago when my Milestone never got cracked.
Mods still make the phone fun, but it's night and day different of what you can do with say a Galaxy S...
Until applications stop supporting Froyo/Gingerbread/ICS/whatever the final update Motorola pushes is, I dont see the need for a custom kernel. Stuff like 2init that allow everything but the kernel to change would be enough for almost everything you'd want to do. As long as Motorola pushes semi-recent kernels, we should be ok.
From what I've read, in the bootloader bounty topic, we have something close to release.
Bootloader might not ever get cracked completely, but there are certainly ways around it. Look at the iPhone, they can modify it with various levels of exploits. (iBoot, ramdisk, userland) and they don't have it cracked completely.
Also, number 3 on that list could be pure speculation, or it could be complete truth. There could be hundreds of people that know it, or just 1.

+1. Us Atrix users obviously don't have the userbase that iDevices have, but we have the *new* nVidia chipset, there are bound to be holes. Some talented dev needs to find it. But we have like 1/20 the users that iDevices have. And like 1/1000 of those are devs. But coming as a jailbreak dev on the iPhone. Im gonna take a plunge and see myself.

Motorola will have an "Official Gingerbread" out this year. Will they have an "Official ICS"? Highly doubtful
There will be partial ICS available through mods, but why play the waiting game when the update is available and easy to flash? Most of the waiting is for sales/marketing purposes anyway.
^ Look at the HTC Desire, Froyo was available to be installed early last summer. One major carrier didn't release it till Halloween. Guess what, the "Official version" was the exact same as the leaked version (I used both to compare). Then there's the T-mobile Galaxy S "Froyo incident" (which everyone knows that story by now). Verizon Fascinate, (the list goes on and on).
The average Joe will sit around and wait for an OTA, but the average XDA user knows better.
That's why any exploits found on the Bootloader will still better than nothing...

Seriously? Will it allow us to finally get rid of blur via another Rom?

[Q] What's Next After 2.2.2

I know we'll never get Gingerbread. However, say for another more popular phone, is GB usually the next step after a 2.2.2 update?
In a perfect world we might get small upgrades or fixes for froyo but the next big update would be Gingerbread.... before we can ask whats next I think we have to answere this question: How long are you (we) planning to keep phone? I personally dont have all the info to answere my own question...where should I go to ask Q's about carrier and prepaid plans etc? Or should I start a thread in Continuum General Discussion since my Q's involve more than just carrier upgrades and service agreements?
sent from my XDA phone - its more than a continuum
Next
We are now working on a Symbian rom for this phone.
Symbian wtf lol
Isn't that nokias old os I mean it would be cool to see it but u just got to laugh at that at the same time lol
Sent from my SCH-I400 using XDA App
I had some wild ideas about a GB rom, or even a new custom Froyo rom, but it's way, way beyond my abilities, or at the very least, way beyond my time.
Personally, the ticker irritates me. At first, I thought it was a great innovative feature, but I find myself accidentally touching it when I'm trying to do something else, and it's become more of an irritation than an added feature.
So here's what I'd love to see, though since I'll be selling this phone before the month is out, I probably won't ever see this for myself. The ticker display would be far more useful as a dock and notification bar in one, freeing up some very useful real estate on the screen.
All in all, this would have been a great phone, if Samsung and Verizon would have made the decision to make their customers happy. It still is a good phone, considering its overall performance, but what's kept this from being a great phone is the under-developed software from the manufacturer. I won't be buying another Samsung phone for sure.
Yes Samsung has left a bad taste in my mouth over all of this as well pastor.
I hope you stick around even though your getting rid of your Continuum, your advice on this forum has been invaluable....in fact reading your stuff taught me how to flash these to begin with, and i really am grateful for how clear and consise you have documented all of your work. I wish you the best of luck in all that you do!
