[Q] What's Next After 2.2.2 - Continuum General

I know we'll never get Gingerbread. However, say for another more popular phone, is GB usually the next step after a 2.2.2 update?

In a perfect world we might get small upgrades or fixes for froyo but the next big update would be Gingerbread.... before we can ask whats next I think we have to answere this question: How long are you (we) planning to keep phone? I personally dont have all the info to answere my own question...where should I go to ask Q's about carrier and prepaid plans etc? Or should I start a thread in Continuum General Discussion since my Q's involve more than just carrier upgrades and service agreements?

We are now working on a Symbian rom for this phone.

I had some wild ideas about a GB rom, or even a new custom Froyo rom, but it's way, way beyond my abilities, or at the very least, way beyond my time.
Personally, the ticker irritates me. At first, I thought it was a great innovative feature, but I find myself accidentally touching it when I'm trying to do something else, and it's become more of an irritation than an added feature.
So here's what I'd love to see, though since I'll be selling this phone before the month is out, I probably won't ever see this for myself. The ticker display would be far more useful as a dock and notification bar in one, freeing up some very useful real estate on the screen.
All in all, this would have been a great phone, if Samsung and Verizon would have made the decision to make their customers happy. It still is a good phone, considering its overall performance, but what's kept this from being a great phone is the under-developed software from the manufacturer. I won't be buying another Samsung phone for sure.

Yes Samsung has left a bad taste in my mouth over all of this as well pastor.
I hope you stick around even though your getting rid of your Continuum, your advice on this forum has been invaluable....in fact reading your stuff taught me how to flash these to begin with, and i really am grateful for how clear and consise you have documented all of your work. I wish you the best of luck in all that you do!

a bit disappointed with Vibrant development and accesories...

I thought by now we will have something good and yet there isnt a single case that i like, a back cover, or a holster.....
and the development forum is filled with bunch of lag fixes and roms (2 roms) that are not even as good and stable as stock.
no word on froyo yet, media hub is crap, etc...
With worldwide release i really thought this will be moving with speeds of Nexus.....I guess i was wrong. Its just horrible that they decided to release 5 different variations of Galaxy S. Different bodies, and even different hardware, and therefore different firmware as well

It will come. There is a major learning curve since this is much coherent than the htc built phones. As for accessories yeah.. But it's only been 2 months, be patent..
i too thought that dev would have jumped all over galaxy S phones right away. i know there is a learning curve from htc phones, but i though they would be all over these as they all have the same basic hardware.
I do appreciate the dev who are here and helping and working
i wish for more accessories too
Honestly, this is the first android phone I've owned, I am quite impressed with the activity by the devs. There seems to be a lot of effort into designing tweaks that will lead to some quality changes to our Vibrants after the bugs are worked out.

i would, but unfortunately i am not a developer. and by adding and removing apps from stock rom back and forth is not really development. i do appreciate the lag fix, its working great so far.
Op please sell your phone, buy an HTC, and have a coke and a smile... quit complaining about one of the best phones in the WORLD market... if still unhappy there is always iPhone.... bye bye...
And I wish moderators here would trash these stupid waaaah waaaah threads.... your complaint is useless unless you are willing to develop, hack, beta test, or otherwise move development along... and to the point of lag fixing and deleting bloatware, YOUR WELCOME FOR THE FREE DEVELOPMENT YOU UNGRATEFUL COMPLAINER!!!
If you really think that all the devs are doing is adding and removing apps then maybe you should just wait for an ota update.

Well, I have the phone and my wife bought me a case. I felt in love with it. Amazon's is full of them. My case was worth 9 USD when I first bought it, I can tell u that now there are more expensive ones, the technology is much better.

if these points you listed are so important to you, why did you buy the phone before these things came along?
If and when I am looking at buying something new I do research before purchasing a product so I know what to expect. It sounds like you assumed these things would be ready day 2 after launch and now that they are not you panties are in a twist.
If this is really the case go look in the mirror and there you will have the person to blame for your aggravation .
I like the phone. and i do think it the best phone on the market (at least for me). But I would probably get Droid X if it wasnt so big.
After some mods to phone, i am very happy with it (except for back cover and 2.1, well and the fact that compass just doesnt work at all), gps works, launcher pro plus is a killer, lag fix works, battery indicator fixed, and obviously removed all crapware, oh and tasker app makes word of difference too.
Still New
Am I one of the few that think 2 months is still early in the development game?
The Nexus One is sold as a developers phone, so it should and is supported as one.
I think the developers have lives and a real job. Making this a fun hobby for most of them. So just relax, be patient and before you know it you will have every tweaked/hacked/themed ROM available for your flashing pleasure.

Are actually retarded, so you must make the same stupid point over and over?
We buy stuff when we need it -- like when the old phone breaks, or a plan needs to be renewed.... Most people research a bit, then weigh the pros and cons and take the plunge.
After some use, everyone finds things they like or dislike about their purchase.
But really, why shouldn't we expect to be able to buy by now the dock that Samsung was showing off in their ads way before the phone was available?
Just cleaned this thread and removed some unacceptable comments which absolutely break XDA Rule 2 and usually lead to the suspension of user accounts.
Please stay on topic. Don't post if you have nothing constructive to offer.
Appreciate your cooperation.

Actually, demanding that a product for which you've paid $500 works and it's upgradeable for a reasonable time as long as the hardware supports it (just like a computer), is not *****ing.
When you buy a new car and the radio doesn't work, you don't expect the dealer to tell you to either wait indefinitely, or fix it yourself. Same with this phone.

Difference the phone works as is, everything works fine on it. You just want it to work "better".
Well I want my myTouch to be better. Yea, they should trade me out to a myTouch Slide! I spent 250!!! dollars on it.
I don't remember the last time I bought a computer and then when the next version of an OS came out I got it for free. Either shut up, or learn to develop on your own.

[RANT]You got what you paid for.

I've only had this Epic for almost a month and am very satisfied with it so far. But its getting pretty old looking on xda everyday to see someone new complaining about not having Froyo. You got what you paid for people, you bought a epic with 2.1 eclair on it, do you buy windows xp and then when windows 7 comes out you complain they won't upgrade you for free? There will always be something better and something new out there or up and coming you can't expect companies to sit there and keep working on things of the past they have to make money as well and they have to compete with each other and try to stay on top. I'm not saying I don't think they shouldn't release it for us I'm just saying you realy can't blame them for moving on with other phones as well. And if you think 2.2 is gonna make your phone that much better then go get a vibrant from tmobile bc I put 2.2 on my girlfriends phone last week and it didn't do much of anything for it, its just software sure your battery is a little better or the system runs a little smoother your not changing what you physically have the hardware is what it is and you knew all of this before buying the phone and if you didn't then you had 30 days to do some research and return it to sprint.

Alright, I'll bite.
most of us did not buy our epic's having seen a forum full of people dissatisfied with samsung's ability to upgrade their phones. I for one bought my phone on launch day. August 31st 2010. It was a sunny day, there was a nice breeze. I was young without a care in the world. I saw a phone with very formidable hardware and better yet, a promise from samsung that the device would see 2.2 in the very "near" future.
Now I don't know what you paid for your phone, but I paid retail price plus tax. If I had known I was actually paying for an education about what it exactly it means to buy a samsung phone I would have looked elsewhere.
that being said, theres one thing I can't stand and that is people such as yourself who waited until after people bought the phone and realized that and official update in a timely fashion not likely, accepted that risk, and then come here to rub it in the face of those who care about things like kernel sources, and custom roms to tell us about how we should all be as smart as you with your divine phone selecting savvy. I can't say that I speak for everyone, but I can certainly speak for myself when I tell you sincerely to gtfo.
yours truly, cozmonot
Ok to someone like yourself I understand that you did not know what you were getting yourself into and I'm not trying to say that someone such as yourself that bought the phone right when it came out doesn't have a right to be mad. I never said I had waited to buy this phone for any reason its just when I see ppl on here that say they just got the phone and now are mad they don't have 2.2 yet its disturbing. I understand we need kernals and source to make better roms and things, I myself am running Nebula and have been since the first week of owning this phone, so as with the rest of you I myself would like it so my rom can be further upgraded. The main thing I was trying to get at is that complaining about how we don't have it isn't getting us it I did not mean disrespect for someone like yourself and I don't think I have any better taste for phones than the rest of us we all chose this phone for whatever reasons but I don't think anyone chose it bc it was going to have 2.2

I agree in that people complaining here doesn't really accomplish much. Apologies, I probably shouldn't reply to threads when I'm angry and tired.
I think we need to make our voice heard by sprint and samsung if we want things to actually happen, and complaining to people in the same position can't make things any better. just look at the vibrant owners who threatened a lawsuit and got the mainstream blogs to post about the vibrant not having froyo, didnt they get the update like a week later? I agree with what you said in your second post and I wish I had known about what I was getting myself into back in August when i signed on the dotted line.

I bought the phone because of the hardware and because it was stated that 2.2 would be coming soon. I don't understand how people like you can just accept that You have the phone with the best hardware specs on the market at the moment and not be pissed that it doesn't have 2.2. While I agree that coming on xda and starting multiple threads on if FroYo is out is not the most productive way of dealing with the problem, bending over and submitting that because you paid money for the device and knew that it had 2.1 on is just a cop out.
To answer your question on what does FroYo add, here is just a few.
- What about all of the people who spent $30 to $50 on official samsung docks and can't even use it to the fullest without FroYo. IT EVEN SAYS ON DAMN PACKAGING THAT FULL FUNCTIONALITY WILL BE UNLOCKED WITH THE 2.2 UPDATE.
- What about bluetooth voice dialing, JIT, flash, and the updated google apps that come with 2.2, not to mention the speed increase. The FroYo update for the Vibrant doesn't count in this case because everyone knows that update was rushed because of the lawsuit business, and that lead to a bugged release.
And if none of that convinces you, the fragmentation of the market is the best example I can give. Do you know how annoying it is to find an app that you know your phone has more than enough power to run, but it won't even show up in the market because it only works on FroYo and up? IT'S THE ****ING PITS DUDE. For example there is this game that some (ex-sony I think) devs called Lame Castle that I really want to play, but it won't work on galaxy s phones without FroYo. Look it up on the market with Epic, it won't even show up. Now go on appbrain and its there clear as day. There are numerous examples of this, but this is the one that affected me that most.
So when you say that we should have know better and should not be upset, all I can say is that I hope you continue to enjoy the anal that samsung and sprint have given you so far. There's a lot more to come.
It was my first Android. It was cool at first, but just wanted FroYo and refused to get the Evo because the screen sucks and no keyboard.

I would have to say my favorite part about what you said was when you said Froyo for vibrant was rushed and has bugs. Because that could be us, we could have a rushed crappy edition of froyo. I understand that it makes it better and we can't do somthings without but if your life won't go on because you can't play some game on your phone (unless somehow you've got a job doing mobile gaming) then it might be time to look at some new hobbies or just pay your way out of contract so you can go get a phone with froyo that will make you happy as a little kid in a candy shop. But it must not be that bad if your willing to wait it out and hope one day you will wake up and see an OTA.

Anyways android is a grey point right now as with your reference to XP you could pay to upgrade to vista/7 (driver / hardware supporting of course) where with android everything is kept under wraps so by the manufacturer until weeks or sometimes months after their "official" software is released and only then can some reverse engineer everything to get what they need to develop.
Hopefully the future of android can be like computer operating systems. Manufacturers only make drivers that way google can push out their own updates or at least give us the ability to do our own.

About the Vibrant, their is no excuse for that buggy release at such a late push date. The carriers have had FroYo since November and and have taken their own sweet time working on it. To add insult to injury, Every other carrier with a Galaxy S phone has pushed out FroYo since November. They even started getting 2.2.1 about two weeks ago. Even the number five carrier in the states, U.S. Cellular, has had FroYo out for its captivate out for about a month and a half now. And guess what? That update went off without a hitch. I also like how you were able to boil down my argument into the my statement about Lame Castle, which in my circles is very important because I'm going to school for that kind of thing, and Vibrant update which I would have even if I didn't have months of knowledge on the situation here and everywhere else that Galaxies are sold. You just get your phone and feel like preaching to me on how I should just take this ****. I bought this phone months ago knowing I would be with it for two years and expecting on Samsung to hold up to their statement of by the end of the year. Its a month into 2011 and still nothing. If you find your epic fine on 2.1, all power to you. But their are people with docks, people that want to make hands free calls while on the road, and people who just want full access to the market, who have all the right in the world to complain over this mess.
Note: Make multiple threads on XDA is NOT the way to go about it though people.

I decided to get THIS phone for the desired features AND the promise of 4G and 2.2 before the ed of the year. While you are entitled to your opinions, I certainly don't appreciate labeling and especially not when you do it from the safety of your keyboard. It just isn't called for.

I didnt read the majority of the posts, I apologize....just want to put in my two cents and I guarantee it'll still be on topic.
People here have the right to rant. They have the right to be angry. They bought a true high end Android phone and are still on 2.1. That's not right... I have an Evo and an Epic...and the difference between 2.1 and 2.2 is really just the Flash (I'm not including what Samsung through in there based off of the leaked roms. Because some of what they through in there was just polishing up the UI and stuff). And Flash isn't really that big of a deal, its just one of those things that is nice to have. But thats beside the point. It doesnt even matter if the only thing different between 2.2 and 2.1 was a damn ringtone...a high end Android phone should be updated. If you don't update these phones, then why would someone shell out extra money to buy another high end phone that will share the same exact features as a low end phone? True the High end will be faster, but it really needs to have something to separate itself from the low end phone and that something should be the fact that it will always be supported...
And this is the problem with Android and this is what makes me sick about it. Android is great...but dammit...they need to relax on these phones and focus on the ones that are out now. They just keep on taking our money, and its going to get to the point where no phones will be updated, they will just keep releasing phones with the new update. And they know people will straight up go buy the new phone just for that update, just to realize that it aint even good. I started with the Evo before the Epic and if I wouldve went from the Epic to the Evo just for 2.2, I wouldve been pissed the hell off. 2.2 is not worth it at all...well, lemme put it like this: 2.2 by itself is not worth it. Although it aint worth it, this high end phone should still have it. If the Evo has it...the Epic should have it. The Evo will probably get Gingerbread and that'll be a damn shame...it won't benefit from it at all...
I mean, when you look at this 2.2 update from different angles, you can see why people rant and get mad. They have the right to...now if we could just put all of it into one thread that would be a lot better than multiple threads...but its w/e.
Also, does anyone else think that nothing else will top Android but Android will "destroy" itself? Android has already destroyed itself with me, if the iPhone hits Sprint, I'm jumping ship.

Time to let go????

I have had my slide for a very long time now. I feel like development is coming to a crawl. CM7 will never have flash integration even though we keep getting upgraded versions of android. The CM7 forum is floaded with issues the last time I peeked. Gotta love those guys for giving us hope and their time. The Alpharev 2 looks super promising kinda wish chiefreloadz and other dev's would take a peek at it to give us life. I am at a point where getting a new phone is inevitable. Wish I could setup a poll via my slide to see how many people feel the same way. How many of you feel the same or disagree with me.

I feel the same way too. The slide really is a powerful device. I'm really upset it died so quickly.
Yeaaa and I'm especially dissapointed w/ the lack of custom kernels. I see so many devices w/ a wide variety of custom kernels (new and old phones), but this one only has 2 (dumfuq and miguel). I root other peoples phones and do overclocking and such, and I c all these kernels to choose from, while this device only has 2 kernels, even lower end devices have more kernels than this..

The slow of progress in the Slide has driven me to new levels in the android world. I have made many sad attempts at creating my own Roms from source...as well as several successful attempts at modifying a ROM to fit my needs...as well as creating batch files to do most of the the work for me when it comes to nightlies, but nothing original. I am sad to to see this phone in the state it is since this is the second phone I've had of the android family. (I've hacked many others for the purpose of profit) I still use and maintain several G1s...which re-enforces my dismay over the staleness of this device. My next buy is a G2x (LG Optimus 2x). I could wait for the 3D line in the next year but my boredom has eclipsed my interest 10 fold. I plan on passing this phone on to my wife when she gets home from active duty in South Korea. So all is not lost. I know this doesn't even belong in this sub-topic of the forum but I thought it worth sharing my opinion on.
Well in my attempt of waiting for several things to happen I just went online and pre-ordered my WIFI Motorola Xoom. I am very excited hoping this will not have me thinking about my slide that often awaiting the next best thing. I also have a Nokia Maemo phone which the firmware will be updated to Meego by the end of April so its a matter of waiting I guess. Well hopefully this thread will bring things back to life if not then I would like to say goodbye to my slide by the end of the year and get myself a new phone with more power yada yada. lol. Anways...
can someone send me miguel's kernel?
or tell me where I can find it?
i can't get my hands on it...
As for the HTC Slide. I just upgraded from my Motorola Cliq a few weeks ago.
It's definitely a big hardware boost, but the dev support is certainly less.

Actually they removed that thread a long time ago,the only way to get it is to get it from someone who has it.
As for the slide I still have mine and it's running strong. It's a nice little phone and I don't think support for it will fade entirely for a while, there's just not much else that needs to be done to improve it thanks to cyanogen.

looks like the admins did a great job of wiping him off the face of xda
I actually posted a comment similar to this thread in the Gingersense thread. But yes I feel as if upgrading handsets will be the only way to get that "new phone" feeling I had got when first flashing cm6 and cm7 .
Edit: also this phone has yet to reach a year in age.(june or July)
And as far as flashplayer, its not the roms that don't support it but the UI. Sense UI was flash lite compatible but only armv7 processors are full flash capable.

Im sure most know, but maybe not the original poster, that this is not the place for this. Yes, you are talking about devs and roms and what-not, but this has nothing to add to the development community.
Yes, the slide does lack devs unfortunately. It is very sad that many devs did not take an interest in this device early on and those that did lost interest. I personally dont get it since i love this device. But the last thing to do is to complain about all that and just leave it at that. One of you said you tried to tinker with roms. Great! Thats what we need. We need people to get off their asses and take initiative. Lack of devs led me to attempt the port gingersense. I do not call myself a dev since i know 0 code and simply just know a few tricks, but at least i try. I would like to see more people start tinkering. If you love your slide, keep it alive. If you think you dont have the time, thats on you. I personally have a full time carreer which has crazy hours and a nearly full term pregnant wife (which means i have to do nearly everything around the house).
If you read this all, thx, i hope this sticks with someone.
Oh yeah, and admin plz move to appropriate section XD

I agree with most of what's been said. There really isn't much else we can do with the slide. With everything that's available to us, we have it, and that's about it. Since no one likes the mid-range of the slide and they all want the high-end awesomeness of the newer phones, the slide has few people to share their roms and themes.
I've had my slide since the very start of the slide era, and it is great with CM7 it does everything you want from a daily phone. I feel like I want something more tho, everything seems outdated with all of the new software and apps out there, we can't use them because of the slides hardware. Sad that's it's only been a year since it came out and it's outdated..tho I suppose launching the Galaxy S right after the slide launch just made it seem outdated weeks after.
As soon as I'm available for an upgrade in April I will be switching to a new phone; which I think most of us, who just want something more, are doing.
I got my slide on June 4th 2010, the day it was available for customers. I have loved my slide since. I learned soooo much about the Android OS and its capabilities since owning my Slide. I absolutely love it and want to hang onto it for as long as possible. It does everything I need it to do and it does it fast. Doesn't Cyanogens wife have a slide? I would think he would continue devving for it until his wife switches phones. Just a thought
It is endlessly amusing to me that someone would rather buy a phone out right simply because development has stopped....
You know the point was for YOU to get involved... right?
Listen I agree this is probably not the place for this but its a great place to voice my opinion to dev's which there is a huge shortage for this phone (this is my sole opinion). I have learned a ton from my slide. My first android phone was a maemo phone with a rigged android version on it. That made me want to get the slide because of android. I apologize if I offended people but just voicing my opinion on a topic that has been an ongoing discussion for many of us slide users.

Thinking here..

So like.. The Acer Iconia Tab A500 is a amazing built tablet and all but the little problems that acer has are horrible.. As in sleep wake/off, updates, battery drain by a phone app.. And etc.. Now im thinking about all of this and im thinking do any of you think it would be a good idea to return and wait til the new samsung or toshiba come out? Tomorrow i should be in work and i will be asking my manager if they got a release date on the samsung or toshiba tablet.. Since i work at staples and we should be getting the samsung nd toshiba from what i know.. Now im wondering everybody explain why acer should be kept because from the prices samsung is only a 50$ difference thats not a lot.. So lets hear it? I think the updates and bootloader being locked are my two biggest concerns about this tablet because im a crackflasher on my phone i wanna do the same on my tablet =]
AH! ****.. Somebody please move this to general i thought i was in the general section..
I returned mine today
Loved the tablet bur dreampt of unlocked recovery. I miss it already, hefty tab but so many ports

The will always be "the next best thing" the samsung is nice and thin but lacks ports. The toshiba is a bit of an unknown at the moment, and afaik this is there first step into the android os and cell/mobile market, so even more bugs are likely. I've had 2 Acer android cellphones, and there updates and stability was superb. In a few weeks we will have 3.1 and I'm quite sure most if not all bugs will be fixed. Just look at the bugs the xoom had when it was released...... not even a working sd card. And now there quite happy with there little tablet. The iconia is still brand spankin new, let Acer iron out the bugs....... they will
Yea but the stupid.. Phone and Tele app that eat battery nd mess up updates is freaking retarded.. The toshiba should be coming early june i could return my tablet for a while since i work at the store i bought it from and my manager will take it back so lets see.. Im trying to give Acer a chance since i own a Acer netbook and Computer and both are great.. Never bought a Acer phone but the tablet is built amazingly just what they did with software is horrible..
I was at Best Buy today bringing my A500 for an exchange for another A500 due to the HDMI port was kinda loose, and when touching the cable the pictures/video would go off on the monitor. I'm digging the Acer..
My cousin has an Asus transformer 16gb .... I made fun of him when I pointed out that his Asus didn't have flash, a low resolution front cam ... OH , when I was there, in the same spot where they stock the tablets, I saw at least three or four Motorola XOOM..... all was open box.
IMO .. all I care for is specs...and it seems that majority of the new tablets including the acer has really close in hardware specs, besides cosmetic.
The only thing giving me pause is lack of recovery. I'm used to being able to fix stuff myself. If tis thing goes tits up I have to rely on my retailer to take care of me.
Hmmm...you think anyone from acer is reading this? Love the tablet but hate their support.

You never know on the galaxy s forum a guy named samsung jhon who worked for samsung was responsible for checking out the xda forum, and trying to keep the dev community happy. Of course he was chased out of the forum by all the haters and trolls, but it goes to show this little forum of ours can make a difference if we just keep voicing our discontent about the lack of recovery/locked bootloader.

lmao. So true.
Personally i'm glad the 'issues' are only a little battery drain (still unsubstanciated i might add), the screen popping on for a few seconds maybe once or twice.... what where the other ones? "etc" issues? Yeah, etc issues... whatever those are...
I didn't drop $500 for a toy. I bought a tool and as far as tools go, it meets and exceeds my expectations. Why so many people see fit to hop on and off the train, i think, says more about their personality than the tablet and whatever issues there might be (real or otherwise).
Go ahead, OP, get ride of it. It doesn't want you either. (;

Lol.. The way you put it it sounds horrible.. Lol but no the etc i mean locked bootloader, no recovery, you cant delete specfic apps because if you do and try to restore you get a brick, updates mostly international, and **** like that the acer is built good and i know theres always something new around the corner because i have had android since the g1 days and getting a new phone like every 3 months i know about the new things lmfao so im just thinking on if acer will make it better in the next couple weeks because if they do and they fix everything i would happily stay with acer because right now i dont want to risk anything on the tablet try to do anything because i know theres no way of returning it to stock at the moment if i eff something up i just want that satisfaction that if i **** something up i can fix it myself and not call acer and send it out and have them fix it..
I hear ya.
I don't consider the locked bootloader, personal recovery option and inability to remove pre-installed apps as 'issues'. And, really, it isn't. At least, not for those of us who just use it as it was intended to be used.
Yes, the a500 needs a little tweaking, however it's mostly Honeycomb and all minor. Unlike some tabs that have glaring hardware issues, the a500 leads the pack in quality and consistency. IMO, anyways (; (sure I'm biased but I have played with other tabs)
Don't get me wrong, I see the value in being able to recover on your own (if something goes awry) but in the end, it went that way because of user error (or bad mod, whatever the case may be) and because it was unlocked / rooted - It's no fault of Acer and it shouldn't be held against them or the tablet. Like all other tablet manufacturers, they wouldn't support that even if they did release the key. And in the end, all we'd really get out of it all are more people bricking their tabs, Acer getting screwed over by people lying and returning their tabs - all for the ability to what? Delete or rename a few files? Get back maybe, 100mb on a 16gb tab with microSD and USB?
If some mod came out that flipped HC on it's head and created a user experience that surpasses all others, then, and only then, would I ever consider rooting (ROM hacking etc ((if that ever becomes possible)) Until then, what few and silly 'root req' apps there are and minuscule returns one gets are far too insignificant for me.
But, you know. In the end, it about what you want. If modability is a prerequisite, you probably should have waited. If you take it back, you might want to consider waiting until you know for a fact that all those features are available in the next tablet du-jour.
I get what ur saying.. But heres the thing ive played with the xoom and asus and everything there built great as well just those little features that i wont use like usb support are the only thing missing on those other tablets.. I like root because it can help me get rid of the stuff i dont use and is running the background.. also the custom roms are usually a lot better than what the manufacturs usually release with the hardware.. So idk im gonna wait til the new thing comes out and see what the developers do with it.. Since i only had the tablet for a week nd 2 days.. I have a while to return =]
return it, by the looks of your phone list seems like your indecisive(not trying to be mean) the wake up issue is not a big deal and will get fixed. i get over a days use with heavy use.
if this tab gets regular support will flashing new ROMS really be necessary. i mean on HTC hero chirst that thing needed support there was no way to make it through a two year contract with it.
Now my nexus s theres support on here for it and its great. but out of the box it works just fine

Don't get me wrong but i think switching hardware that often and just flashing ROMs and software made by other people is called consumerism. Ahum. What's the point of switching the device unless you've explored all its hardware, know all electronic details like chips used and gpios/clocks or unless it's just too old to run software you need for work?

Well i have no idea why i switch so much maybe i just like that new phone/tablet/computer feeling lol but hey you guys do put up some good points so lets see what happens..

Lots of ROMs, theming and tweaking, BUT what about REAL IMPROVING?

These days, I'm seeing lots of supposed teams tossing zillions of ROMs that are no real improvement. I think I have tried 1 out 2 and I stopped the flashing game after I realized they are almost the same dog with a different collar.
Am I the only one? Is our Vibrant a stalled device in terms of REAL development? Come on, boys, less theming and more real improving!!
You're kidding, right?
Sent from my SGH-T959 using XDA App
I'm not kidding. Can you name a ROM that is not CM7 that is making real improvements like proper GPS with sensors and no path-sliding in Gingerbread, improved battery, no problems entering deep sleep and being fast?
Any ROM GB ROM that doesn't not suck, lasting less than 15 hours with moderate use?
You wanna go beg samsung to release source? Wait. Dont. By the way you type, you seem like a genius that can build us a source!
JMN... everyone jumped ship and started working on Gingerbread... without anything specific for our phone. I guess you could say we are stalled in that regard. Nobody wants 2.2.... and the 2.3.+ roms are missing a lot of the key things needed for what you seek. It is what it is.
Go pester T-Mobile and Samsung, not XDA/community/developers.
I do.
If it were as easy as you make it seem, I am sure our Vibrant would have a 100% working CM7 right now. Problem is, it isn't. We don't have any source code for Gingerbread, our GPS is from a half-baked file for the Galaxy S 4G, and Samsung decided to use several proprietary loops inside their source code that make the code counter-intuitive. As a result, our developers basically have to reverse engineer a good portion of the code itself.
Or you are more than welcome to start working on it yourself. Seems as up until JVQ dropped on I9000 I was the only one actually doing anything (with of course a couple other good people dropping in from time to time). From April until now we went from a build that was barely usable for more than a couple hours to builds that are definite daily drivers. Granted there are still some flaws but with less than a handful of people do any real developing on what free time we do have and for no incentive other than the thank you button and occasional donation I'd say we're doing pretty damn good.
In the words of someone famous you're either part of the solution or you're part of the problem. Which are you going be?
EDIT: My statement above is putting CM7/MIUI aside, different animal/problems/features/pluses/minuses.

its not that easy to build a rom thats so great people build on xda some can be slightly better than others but hey thats why u get updates, if ur looking for good battery life on gb use an i9000 port like simplyhoney and u wont be mad about the battery life on the other hand i use cm7 and have been on it ever since nightlies started being released i will tell u it came a long way from no gps and battery drain to a half working gps which is still functional to decent battery life and i am grateful for all the hard work but into it

Biting the hands that feed... smh
OK, OK.
Please, forgive me for my anger being unleashed. Maybe it was that I see newer devices having a plethora of updates and improvements, or maybe because with my previous device (HTC Polaris running Windows Mobile 6) there was a man (XDA member know as DZO) that reverse engineered it, driver by driver to make a fully fledged Android device.
I ask you for your understanding, and hope you pardon me. You're right: the real problem here is that T-Mobile and Samsung abandoned the Vibrant to its own luck.
Lots of devs jumped ships because of that. I don't make them guilty about this situation, although I did in my first post. Sorry about that.
I'm a dev myself, but not so low level. I cannot compile drivers or reverse engineer. Otherwise, I would really like to collaborate with Atinm and the others.
Please, don't abandon or blame the Vibrant and other Galaxy S devices and try to squeeze all the juice out of it. If we all switch to the latest device, manufacturers will always laugh at us selling slightly different hardware, not upgrades for our totally capable devices.
Nothing more to add. Sorry for my rough and disrespectful words I wrote before. Long live XDA-Devs.
My fellows, I went to the T-Mobile USA facebook site (http://www.facebook.com/TMobile) and published this on their wall:
"SHAME ON YOU, T-MOBILE! Where is Gingerbread for the T-Mobile VIBRANT???? Do you ever care about your users? Do you think we will eat every phone you release with no questions and wishing NO SUPPORT? We do buy devices with future in mind. A ONE-year-device has been ditched away because you are too busy selling the so called 4G version. Too obvious you're playing with us, playing the "buy me and forget me" game. Sorry, but never again to you, T-Mobile, or whatever you will be called after the merger."
I hope you could support me or write comments criticizing the way T-Mobile is acting upon us.
Thanks.
I just re-posted your message on T-Mobiles Facebook site. Not too sure where yours went. Maybe they deleted it.
Thanks a lot, dude. They have the site configured so you cannot see the posts that users write on the wall until you explicitly reveal them using the "Most recent" option (link http://www.facebook.com/TMobile?sk=wall&filter=1). It's there, I think. We need to cry out loud.
I absolutely approve of telling T-Mobile we are tired of waiting.....
Gingerbread = Security.
I posted this on their facebook, all we can do is hope one day they get the point.
"T-mobile, you have a very loyal customer base that bought one of 2010's best smartphones, the Samsung Vibrant. However, with the release of the Samsung Vibrant 4g, we have been left in the dark and seemingly ignored regarding security updates and notifications, specifically the gingerbread 2.3 update. We buy devices with the future in mind, and expect to have full support for the devices we spend our hard earned money on. We know that Samsung awaits your instruction to push the updates, and we respectfully request you do so immediately, in order to be up to date on stability, security, and support. This situation has bothered and frustrated many in the Vibrant community, we only ask that you extinguish that fire by providing us the update we deserve and earned, by being your customers."
people will never learn...
they cannot support devices forever. it seems like every single person thinks that once they buy a smartphone, they are guaranteed lifetime support. the cell phone industry is one of the fastest growing industries in the world. i would much rather them cut off my support and have a beast upgrade waiting for me, rather than them focus on constantly rolling out updates for every single device theyve ever created just to shut up *****y consumers. think about it, getting stuck with an outdated device makes it all that much better once you get your upgrade! its amazing im saying this, as i despise corporate america.
i realize the vibrant is just over a year removed, BUT THIS HAPPENS WITH EVERY SINGLE DEVICE. i guarantee if you go to ANY other forum for a device that is 1+ years old, 95% of them will be filled with threads like this. update this, update that, fix this, release this blahblahiwantmybottleblahblah. its not JUST tmobile. its not JUST samsung. these accusations are so narrow-minded. what would happen if they released gingerbread??? two months later, the cry babies would be right back in full swing, "wheres honeycomb?? release honeycomb source!!" it has to end somewhere, you can never satisfy everybody, let alone ANYBODY in the vibrant forum.
its the industry. its the way it works, so stop acting like we are the only ones who are "suffering". its such an ignorant, narcissistic way of looking at it. enjoy what you got, nothings ever built to last. youre "stuck" with a damn good device, it is what you make it. weekly threads begging for gingerbread, or ****ting on tmobile/samsung is clearly not getting it done. so maybe people should be spending their time differently instead of constantly *****ing: get familiar with linux, learn to compile/decompile, learn to theme...its amazing how much fun (yes, without source!) youll be able to have once you learn some stuff. keep yourself busy creating new things, youll take more pride in your device knowing its something that YOU created, as opposed to trolling around and downloading anything you can get your sticky fingers on.

To be honest, support for the Vibrant has been pretty much nonexistent from T-Mobile, I don't think it's too much to ask for a GB ROM from them and Samsung, had T-Mobile been into providing us service instead of trying to sell out we could have had a beter chance at some real support.
