Hi guys,
I'm new to Samsung phone sincerely. I'm coming from HTC lines and currently decided to move on to Samsung's. As far as my budget concerns, I'm capable of buying either Galaxy S i9000 (rm12xx), Nexus S i9023 (rm12xx) and Galaxy S PLUS i9001 (rm13xx). So comparing to these phones, which one seems the best to be grabbed? both Galaxy S runs on S-Amoled screens while Nexus S only on S-LCD (amoled is not available in my country). In term of long term planning, does Galaxy S hardware technology can support more than Gingerbread? As for i9001 which pre-installed with Gingerbread, does this also capable to port more than Gingerbread generation?
ps: hope someone will welcome me here.
Thanks.
Hi,
From these phones I'd choose the Nexus or the i9000.
Why?
Nexus -> Google-Updates. But LCD? Why don't you order a Nexus with SAMOLED from another country?
i9000 -> good phone, thousands of custom-ROMs
S+ : no custom ROMs. It runs with 1.4GHz, but you can overclock the i9000
Nobody here can say if Ice Cream Sandwich will be released for the SGS officially. But CM7 will bring it to us I think.

Galaxy s is a good phone, and now it has a CM7 stable, that make it really good.
Nexus s probably would be better because of Google updates, but if it has LCD and not SAMOLED, maybe I would choose SGS.
I just converted from HTC to SGS, and man this phone with Darkys 10.1 extreme rom + lagfix is just so much win... id go for the SGS
Sent from my GT-I9000 using XDA Premium App
Only down for the SGS is the GPS.
It can be easely used for tracking and going around, but the thing is kind of a gamgle when it comes to tracking (sports related) or anything precise.
But, in the other hand, is there any phone that can be as precise as what some of us need... I'd be curious to try the Nexus S and compare tracks.
BTW: I totaly love the SGS, woudln't trade it for anything! That's why I got an Zephyr HxM
Nexus S used to be a better choice before. However, the dev community in NS is very low in comparison to SGS. That would be my main reason why I'd go for SGS. However, having said that, NS seems to get better "quadrant" scores but I don't know whether there's much difference really.
We got Sammy ROMs, MIUI, CM7, Sense 3.0 comming up as well. Good choice imo no?
I think if you dig somewhere around here there was a comparison between the 2.
Like someone said the Nexus S is really a step down from the SGS. Also the GPS chip should be the same so it should suffer from the same issues with GPS.
The other factors are the use of LCD rather than Amolder, no SD card slot, thicker (although this is a bit of a plus for me), no front camera, no radio (AOSP Issue), no other roms except AOSP based which makes the camera use only SD (no HD recording).
I have to say the SGS with CM7 is a completely different phone. I am using Miui
US at the moment but CM7 makes really the phone fly (and I am no fanboy).
I had a quick play with SGS2 and althogh I spend only a couple of minutes on it it felt a bit slower on the interface than the SGS with CM7. I have to admit that I think this is due to launcherpor though.

Hi, i guess u are right, u'll tend to get lost here inside Galaxy S' forum as there are too much roms to choose for, compare to Nexus S. However, it also has proven that the quality over Nexus S' roms seems undeniable also. You can try to check this link http://smartphonebenchmarks.com/ to see how their custom roms and kernel would affect their permormance and increase their quadrant score up to 4k+. Amazing thing, i guess
There's also rumors that Nexus S will get Ice Cream Candy UI, which is not confirmed for Galaxy S. By the way, the main issue came afterwards as I cant get the S-amoled display for Nexus S, which sounds a lose. So, either the future updates vs screen capabilities become either to be chosen for!
As for Galaxy S PLUS, this has been confusing me as well. Even someone keeps on mentioning that GS PLUS is just the overclocked version of SGS, for me it was totally different things especially for future investment, as it uses different board, different processor (Snapdragon) and different GPU (Adreno 205). Furthermore, it comes with Gingerbread on stock, which show that there's possibilities that this phone can port 2.4 and above!
Nah..talked too much, but yet, still confuse
Mate, get a SGS and you will be very happy with it. I did a silly thing that sold my SGS and jumped to NS. Trust me, I missed my SGS so much that I was back on it within 2 weeks (had to buy a new one as I had sold my old one. Silly me). If you go to Nexus S forums -> General, look for a thread Nexus S after Galaxy S but.., or Nexus S - your impressions. You will find many people who would agree. There are many things in SGS to love over NS.

I am not a benchmark testing fan (specially quadrant), but since this comparison was made with 2 devices out-of-the-box, and I was one of those doubting which one to purchase , I dont mind in this case to add also Quadrant benchmarks to help and try to erase my doubts:
EDIT (13 -nov) : I decided to remove that benchmark comparison till another more reliable benchmark test shows up*
Just vote and give your opinion, based on the user-level experience and/or general impression, specs etc....
I thing I am going for the Note which will soon enough get the ICS as well (not as native though)
What about you? Use the Poll, give you opinion, don't be shy

I'm not the least bit surprised. The Exynos processor absolutely crushes everything out there; just look at how fast the Galaxy Tab 7 Plus is compared to the 10.1.
This is the main reason I'm going with the Note over the Nexus. The latter only has software going for it, and only for so long. The hardware simply doesn't compare, and the lack of a microSD card slot was the finishing blow for me.

Hey..that was fast,,,,I just finished posting this
In the video the speaker points out the Nexus is a pre release version. I'm sure the final device will have a way better performance.

True, but the Note is still superior in terms of hardware (SGX540 vs Mali is almost unfair), so there will still be some sort of noticeable disparity.
Keep in mind that I just dropped $710 on the Note, so I'll say anything to warp reality to my liking .
What do u expect when u post in galaxy note forum.
Would have a different result in galaxy nexus forum.
The 2 most imp things are
1. the size of the screen
2. how fast android updates will come to each handset.
1. Highly individual choice
2. nexus has upper hand.
The stuttering of the video on the Galaxy Nexus clearly shows in my opinion that this is not a production ready device. I don't think these tests say much.
Here's another gnexus quadrant test: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=aOCletx2OJU
The result here is 3300 and something

+1 Wisely said.
As soon as I can get a T-MO USA friendly Note I will have one, As soon as the Prime is out I will have one of those as well I voted for both.
My guess is for the purely business related side of my life the Note will kill everything out there today, But my dev modding side will be happier with the Prime....... They both should be out by Xmas so I will update as soon as I have both to compare.

So true... for developing, the gnex should be so exciting. But I don't think it will beat the productivity of the note.

And what the sgs1 is concerned, quadrant benchmarks means nothing...

Right.....I think the Galaxy Nexus forum is still warming up, but I just started a thread over there, linking to this one.....let's see what happens...
Here in Holland the GNexus didnt hit the showrooms yet...
When it does, I will be testing the sound ( for music) just as I did with the Note and the sgs2...

I got the Note and i orderd also the Nexus...but im sure that i will sell the Note because i dont want to wait 3 monthsore for ics and i like also that there are no Hardwarebuttons...but the Note ist a nice phone

You are absolutely right. My bad! Still can't believe the gnexus has such a low quadrant score
Edit: Quadrant is absolutely not adequate to measure the Galaxy Nexus performance. Ice cream sandwich supports hardware accelaration by the GPU for butter smooth rendering of visual elements. This is turned on by default when a developer writes apps for ICS or higher, but has to be explicitly turned on when a developer targets a lower Android version.
As far as I know, Quadrant doesn't turn on hardware acceleration hence the tests are not relevant at all. (Although it will give an indication how apps will perform that don't make use of the hardware acceleration.
Righty then....

Why? I think they are very interesting. It may be that the Galaxy Nexus will perform average on non optimized apps.

Of course it will. Quadrant is measuring all kind of graphic performances right? Well if this is accelerated by the GPU on ICS and the test app doesn't use this acceleration it's an uneven fight.
See here for hardware acceleration support in ICS http://android-developers.blogspot.com/2011/11/android-40-graphics-and-animations.html?

Hmmm.....Since I linked this thread to the GNexus forum, I see the Nexus is catching up...
Anyway since my experience with the sgs, I am not impressed with benchmarks, specially Quadrant...
I am probably going for the Note, but I will be testing the sound of the GNexus, the minute it hits the showrooms here in Holland.....and if its sound is as good as or even better than my sgs's (wolfson dac) ....that could change my mind....
But, man, I like the size of the note....as somebody wrote, it's not a smartphone, it;s not a tab, it's a super smartphone

Hardware acceleration is acceleration of 2D ui by rendering through GPU, all the 3d games and tests are already running through the GPU.

Is the interface and browser smooth like the ipad? I ask because i tried out a couple of stock android tabs like the sony s and xoom at a store and their scrolling and zooming was quite laggy compared to the ipad, same goes for the browser.

It might just be a matter of updates, but I'm fairly certain that the Galaxy Tab (the original one, which this is the forum for) has never received TouchWiz 4. Furthermore, subsequent Tabs have been Honeycomb-based, so they received TouchWiz UX (which is only a light modification).
My only other guess is whether you're asking about Android 4.0 which includes Hardware Acceleration on selected hardware. Unfortunately, that upgrade won't be coming to the Tab through official channels, so you can't be sure of acceleration support.
As for your comparison to the iPad, I find my GT-P1000 runs just as smooth as the iPad (and even the 2 most of the time) without any acceleration. It's very snappy and zooms and scrolls very smoothly for me.
The touchwiz 4 doesn't have hardware acceleration. Only the firmware Ice Cream Sandwich has this feature. I have the hope that one day we can enjoy of ICS in our Galaxy Tab. It works so good!!!!!

Unless the app calls for it, is not 3d and the user has the force gpu setting on in the.dev settings of ICS, apps arent HW accelled, only the UI.

To clear up the confusion:
The standard Galaxy Tab does not include TouchWiz 4
Honeycomb-based Tabs feature TouchWiz UX and therefore also do not include TW4
Stock Ice Cream Sandwich features HW acceleration on the OS only, not in the apps
The Galaxy Tab has no official ICS update at this time, and therefore will be unlikely to get HW acceleration.
The matter of performance comparison to the iPad is a wholly personal preference and depends on what you're doing on the device.
Remember also that the Galaxy Tab is a 1 and a half year old portable device and is therefore not in the same performance league as newer 10" dual-core models.

It's not about confusion, it's about users demanding way to much from the gadgets they have... That"s a discussion that will live as long as there are gadgets. Remeber the 3D-class-act-hype on HTC's Tytn II , the Kaiser...
People should learn to live with what they get for the money they want to spend....

Happy new year.
I gonna talk about browser issue on Samasung HD devices. I'm Korean so this will be bad English.
There are three HD devices Galaxy note, Galaxy note LTE, Galaxy S2 HD LTE(LTE devices are only in Korea now) They have same issues when use web browser.
Stock browser lose GPU accelerate randomly. This is well known issue and use huge mount of ram and CPU clock. If this issue occur we have to stop browser by task app.
Forthermore other browsers like dolphin, boat have same issue. I test almost of brwosers in Market and I notice that they make my Galaxy note hot..
Other devices also have same issue. I read several oppinion on Galaxy communite. So I'm using Opera Mobile now. Because
It is not based on web-kit browser so always smooth and not make hot device and use less ram and cpu.
Anybody has solution about this? I think we should wait ICS update or great firware by Samsung. GB is not suitable on HD devices..

I'm not talking about benchmarks or specs but rather real world use. I've looked at tons of videos on youtube and the note 2 has the s4 consistently beat on opening apps and websites. Is it because it has a larger motherboard??? They both have quad cores and the same 2gb rams. Or is this because of software optimization because the note 2 has "mature" software.

Its because of android optimization. Note 2 is running on 4.1.2 which had loads of updates allready. Don't forget that the s4 is the only smartphone which runs 4.2.2 at the moment (except the nexus devices). S4 will get updates and will get just better and better. We just need to be patient.

true.. Note 2 is running 4.1.2 hence is faster than S4.. nevertheless, S4 is getting faster (using WanamLite) better battery life, smoother.

I too have used a note 2 stock and with many roms
and now have moved to S4 since 26 april and no doubt that S4 is fast and enjoyed using it and never wud want to go back to Note 2
this is my personal experience and havng abt 40 apps and not filled with any crap and keep the phone with only thing req
How can 4.1.2 be faster than 4.2.2 if it's the same Google release?
I've had an s3 and it was super buggy and slow even with custom rooms. My note 2 in the other hand was a beast!! Opening and closing apps was a breeze and Web pages loaded smoothly. The s4 on the other hand I'd rate as being in the same league as the mote 2 which is disappointing given that this is a newer generation chipset. I'm more excited for the release of the Google edition though which is the main reason why I switched to an s4.

Simple answer... new software needs time to get the bugs out.
Sent from my GT-I9500
Android 4.2 needs fixing definitely , or perhaps optimisation on key lime pie will be better ... Hopefully
I noticed this one too. My friend has the Note II (I also had the same device a couple of weeks ago) and the device is noticeably faster than my GT-I9500.
same here.. i have both and note2 is faster in everything, specially taking photos.
No wonder my sister's s3 on 4.2.2 is performing terribly. Lag is prevalent and touchwiz keeps on crasing and restarting everytime she plays games.
To be honest the s4 is a disappointing upgrade over the note 2, this is one of the few times wherein I wished I stuck with my old phone lol You can't really tell the difference except with the screen and the battery life but there's a big 150 dollar difference in the price tag.
