do all incredibles have grounding issues - Droid Incredible General

I contacted HTC and discussed the grounding issue my phone is experiencing (screen unresponsive when ungrounded.) I asked if exchanging would fix the issue and was told all incredibles suffer from it. I would just like to confirm that people have incredibles that function when touched with only one finger on an ungrounded surface such as the arm of leather sofa.

What exactly is ungrounded?
Sent from my Incredible using XDA App

what is your phone set on when trying to use it?
If the object the phone is sitting on has more charge (and the phone is not in a case) than the object touching the screen (your finger) then it won't work. All capacitive touch screens work this way... at least, that's my understanding. I have never had the unresponsive screen issue, but my phone is also in a case.

path to earth
basically a non conductive surface (example leather couch arm). Mine doesn't even work on most wood tables unless i make a second point of contact.

I have not experienced it, and I tried on various objects after seeing videos of the problem, but it seems like it's a somewhat random problem. I think it has to do with the object having a static charge.
Are you in an very dry environment?
Edit: If you can use one, a case may help.

I'm on my second phone, both of them did it.

I just got my incredible last week, I love it but this is annoying me. The people at the store act like they have never heard of the issue and HTC said getting it replaced wouldn't help. I am considering trying the x or waiting on the fascinate, however I just want to know if and likely when i switch back, should i consider this flaw a necessary evil that goes along with owning this phone? would you say the majority of peoples phones work fine?

I've actually never had a grounding issue with my phone, though that may be because I have a case on it.
The only trouble I've had is the screen freezes when I wake it up, albeit VERY rarely. My boyfriend has the same problem, so I know it's not just me.

i hardly ever notice it. a few times i noticed it was this situation
i have the phone laying on my bed and i wake it up and try to unlock it (using the pattern lock) and it won't work or i have to try several times beacause it reads my touch as jumping around.
99.9% of the time though i'm holding the phone in my hand when i'm using it so i never notice it.

I may be wrong here, BUT. I think the 2.2 leak fixes it. i had the problem before the leak, sometimes when trying to scroll through apps or something with the phone laying on my bed it would think i'm long pausing on an app or it wouldn't scroll right. now it seems to be flawless.. only tested it for a few minutes trying to reproduce it, but still. usually it only took a few seconds to notice it.

could you test something for me since you have the leak? try a pattern lock and see how it goes.

FWIW, mine has had this issue from the start. Bugs me a little, but not enough to replace the handset.

my first incredible had the unresponsive screen, verizon replaced it and that one had it as well, I installed the leaked froyo and the problem is no longer there.

I have had the same problem you have had with both my bed and my couch. After reading the posts here I tried it and it seem that 2.2 has fixed it since I no longer have the problem. Not sure how thats possible if its a grounding issue but its fixed.

While I was unrooted, preparing to flash the leak, I went into the store and got them to exchange my phone. The new one works perfectly but i never tried the leak on the old one. I was told however, via HTC email, that it would not be fixed via update due to being a hardware issue. here is what they sent me. A stated earlier, my new phone now functions perfectly and my name isn't snoopy.
Dear snoopy
Hello snoopy, "Thank you for contacting HTC. I understand how important it is to have your HTC customized to your specifications. I am not sure which HTC device you are writing about, but there is an issue with the Androids. The touchscreen sensor is inconsistent, particularly when the phone is not grounded. Just putting a hand on the device grounds it just fine. This is a physical issue so updates will not resolve it. You do have the option to contact your provider for exchange. James, I hope I have answered your inquiry in sufficient detail. Please feel free to contact HTC at any time in the future. HTC Technical Support www.htc.com/us www.twitter.com/htc www.facebook.com/htc"
i was also told on the phone that exchanging wouldn't fix the issue, however it certainly did correct it.

Titan keyboard problems (key repeats, hard presses needed, etc.)

Does anyone else have a problem with their Titan and the keyboard? This has slowly driven me insane since I got the phone from a friend (which spent most of it's time in the box because he bought an iPhone less than a month later). Some of the keys when pressed (namely E, W, R, M, and N) repeat at least three or four times with each press. Other keys (ALT, shift, P, O) have to be pressed really hard to even register at all.
Is this a common problem with the Titans? I've personally used at least five or six, and mine is the only one to do this. Anyone have a whole keyboard for sale?!
just got a refurb that does the same thing...i don't know if they'll give me another one because of this reason though (at least not for free even though i pay $7/month). my old one with a cracked frame never did this. oh well.
I've had my Mogul for nearly 10 months now and over the last 2 this same exact problem has been getting progressively worse.
I can't send a text message without having to correcting a couple words. Forget about anything longer.
Titan Keyboard problems
I also have issues with the keyboard. have to press the keys too hard and sometimes repeatedly.
how can i solve this?
Same storey over here. Never had the problem until a couple weeks ago. I think maybe the phone just isn't made as well as I had hoped.
It's really a shame that such an expensive device starts to fail in less than a year.
yeah, it's slowly getting worse and worse, to the point where i hate text messaging people. it's pathetic that my buddy's cheapass LG enV works fine, while my originally $300 titan has the world's worst keyboard. what makes it worse is that i know they aren't all like this. we have multiple titans here at work that are great.
Well look what I found...
having the same issue. a real bummer
The attatchment in my last post corrected the problem for me. no more "how arrre youuu doing"
I'll be damned.. that fixed it! Thank you so much!

dude, where'd you find that?
that is crazy. too bad(?) i got a brand new one (not refurb like i got three days ago) from the sprint store after talking to customer care. they also gave me an extra battery, charger, headset, stylus, splitter and all that good stuff from the new box they opened for me! i'll download the attachment though just in case something happens.
but please explain to me how software can correct what seems like a hardware issue?
thanks

lucky you! i'm not sure about everyone else's keyboard problems, but mine didn't start until i upgraded the ROM (i had the original ROM until the GPS/Rev A update came out). my problem was either very coincidental, or the updated driver they used in the new ROM sucks donkey ass.
Not sure if you are describing what I have. I have something simliar, but a reboot of my phone fixes it.
have the same problem and patch above did not fix it since its a hardware problem, keyboard seems to be cheap and poorly manufactured. I just put in a request with asurion for another device. Should arrive soon

The multiple key issue is definitely associated with the GPS ROM updates. Now YOU might have a lemon of a phone but 99% of the people with the issues (including myself) had this start happening when we upgraded.
I am actually running the newest "unreleased" ROM now and I don't have the key issue anymore that I experienced with the first official GPS ROM they released.
i got the titan from sprint 11 months ago and i've used these roms (not in order):
RUU_TITAN_SPRINT_WWE_2.17.651.0_RS_TITAN_SPCS_1.47.01_Ship.exe

dcd_titan_2.2.3_sprint.exe

nueROM v2.1 build 5066.rar.rar
PPC6800SP MR 07-16-07.zip
SchS.exe
vSprint2.exe
Generic_if0ne_beta1.rar
as well as buildOS and dcd's kitchens
i never had a keyboard issue with my original titan handset using ANY of the roms...not before or after flash. i replaced it because there was a crack on the side that i was afraid would grow to damage the screen or something.
the initial refurb that they gave me was the first time i had the keyboard repeat issue. i flashed the 3.35.651.2, 3.49.651.0, dcd_titan_3.1.2.exe three times each to see if it would help...but it did not. that is why i called customer care again and they got the sprint store to hook me up with a brand new one (not refurb). i did not get a chance to see if the attached file helped the issue, but judging from what others have written, it could have helped.
i don't think the titan's keyboard is cheap. i wouldn't have bought it if i thought i was cheap (unless it was actually cheap, price-wise). tell me what an expensive keyboard on a phone feels like...what, a vertu? a tag? mobiado's cocobolo? the titan's keyboard feels pretty solid to me. i want them to release a touch pro for sprint! what's the eta on that?
fixed it
Tonight was probably the 5th time that i've looked for a fix for this annoying keyboard issue. I didn't even have to run a search, just saw the thread. Many thanks to the people who fixed this most annoying problem, since I loaded the last rom most of my friends were begining to think i was drunk all the time because i was always sending them messages just like when I was drunk... anyone have a cab to fix my drinking problem...?
Will this work for the mogul as well....I've been having these same issues with my HTC mogul.

'Patchy' backlight - what happen?

I've noticed recently the backlight on my HD2 seems to have suffered some sort of malfunction or something. Might be a bit of a strong way of describing it perhaps.
Basically imagine if you have a blank white screen/image showing on the phone, there's a couple of bits on it that always stay in the same place where the brightness is not the same as the rest. I'm certain it's only been like this recently but no idea why.
You can only really notice it with very pale or bits of white on the screen but am wondering:
1 - if anyone else has this,
2 - how it's happened,
3 - anything I can do about it,
In particular if it's a fault with the phone (as I'm certain the phone has never been knocked and it definitely has never been dropped or pressed hard etc), is this something I could get done under warrantee.
If it is, can I get it fixed on warrantee even with no receipt since I bought it on Ebay? Every single HD2 is still in its warrantee period so I hope they could do.
Thanks!
I have the same, they advised me to contact support, but i kinda neglected it for the time being.
I have the same kind of spot in the middle of my screen, i only really see it when the screen is white, annoying tho :/
I dont like the idea of having to send the phone out and missing it for a few weeks :'(
I had the same problem on my device so I called HTC and they picked it up, repaired it and sent it back. Well they sorted out this particular problem (by replacing the LCD panel) but, alas, created few more. The buttons were not placed properly, the body was damaged and etc. So Angry and Disappointed Me called them up and they picked it up again. This time they replaced the whole unit (the actual body if I am not mistaken) and sent it back. Finally I was glad to have my phone back after two weeks.
Funny enough most of the HTC employees that I spoke to had very poor English. And I spoke with quiet a few of them. Luckily I am talented at mimicking broken English and didn't have much problem getting my message across. I'd imagine for most people it should be very difficult to explain their problem and arrange repairs.
Thanks for the replies.
Is it possible to do this without a sales receipt and still not have to pay? I don't think I should have to pay since it's not very old at all but I can't prove it's actually my phone I guess.
Did you just contact them via the XDA website or something?
I got the same issue. Most annoying when reading long emails or articles. I thought about sending it in for repair but I have voided my warranty already and don't want to be missing my hd2 for a couple weeks and get hit with a massive bill. I think it has something to do with the layers in the LCD not being completely flat. But I havent got that far in my explorations of this phone, maybe I will on my next trip.
You should contact HTC support by calling at the number for your country that you can find from the HTC website.
They can do everything with the phone's serial no. At least that's how it worked for my Kaiser I got on ebay too when I had a prob with it.

Hmmm, good point. I have a custom rom on it so mine probably would be void too right? If I change it back to the original rom it should be ok though presumably?
Thanks anyway - glad this is not me.
I am also seeing this on my HD2. It is very faint and only really noticeable on white screens. Once you know it is there though you can't help but keep looking for it
To be honest I can put up with it as most of the time you can't actually see it, for example I can't see it now due to the keyboard being up.
I'd be interested to know if anyone in the UK sends their phone off for repair as I might do the same. I can't be without my phone though, it would be like loosing my arm!

Ah yes, so you did. Sorry I was looking at the flag on your profile not your location
I have a small crack on the glass of my HD2 as well between the bottom of the phone and the power / end call key. It looks like a small hair stuck under the button Not sure if they would replace the glass for me as well if I sent it off?
I got my phone from O2 so I'm wondering if I'd have to go to O2 for repair or direct to HTC, maybe I could do both
Anyway, for now I think I'll refrain from sending it off unless it really starts annoying me. A bit of a pain though
I've emailed HTC as well to ask about this.....

What would you do in this Hinge-related international problem

So, basically, I am living in israel for a year so I can have a year of grade-free religious studies and not have to worry about my gpa or take tests. The only problem is that Cell phone selection is pretty crappy.
So I went onto ebay and bought a G2 that shipped to my parents place and a buddy of mine was supposed to bring it to me tomorow but I found out today that I have the hinge problem pretty bad. (my dad showed it to me via skype)
I contacted HTC and they said I am still under warranty but they may not even replace the phone if I send it it. I can get my parents to bring it to a local repair shop and get them to just fix the spring, but the only problem with that is that they may not know what they are doing with the g2 as it is a new phone.
Normally it wouldnt be an issue to just send it it to HTC but the next time a friend is coming in from the states is early january and I don't want to have to wait that long for a phone that may not even get repaired...what would you do?
p.s. I also happen to have a friend here in israel, and although he is not proffesionally trained, he has opened up many an HTC phone. can anyone who has done the spring fix themeselves tell me if it is a particularly hard operation to do on the phone? When you are done doing it does the phone show any sign of being opened to the untrained eye? Sorry about the long post
mountain out of a molehill, you are making, my friend.
get the phone and stick with it. Your dad may not realize that this is normal for the phone.
Get the phone over to the promised land now... and then if you are so unhappy with it... fix it yourself using a thread on how to repair your own hinge on this here XDA Forums!
todah!
Thanks for the reply one thing I noticed when he showed me the phone was that it was almost exactly the same problem as this http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=MvHE5lZ1tCs in that the screen is a little wobly after the keyboard is deployed. Is that also normal?

its normal. Its basically a non issue. I think people just expected it to be rock solid like its predecessor the G1. A lot of people took it way out of context and basically caused such a ruckus over this...
anything with hinges.. is going to be a little free to move around because.. its on hinges!!!
unless the hinges are broken theres no problem with this phone. I mean.. its not for the construction worker or for people who dont have the time or energy to treat it with some respect.. its not exactly a wimp either...
You can always tighten it up a bit to give it more "snap"...
Also.. you will find that your need for the keyboard is not as great as you think... because of the capability for voice commands and the incredible swype and gingerbread keyboards on this --- its so intuitive I rarely need the keyboard anymore.

+1 for the keyboard, i only use mine for long text messages or emails, otherwise i use swype/HTC IME keyboard.
I wasn't happy with mine at first but now I don't even notice it.
Agree with androidcues on the fact that people are making waaay more of a big deal about the hinge than it really is.
The things that are shown in the video linked above, or similar ones (like the phone opening while holding it upside down), would never even be noticed by most people. While I wish the hinge design would stay closed a little more "firmly", its an extremely minor criticism. I still quite like the design, and the general build quality of the phone is excellent.
I'm not as concerned about the loose hinge as I am about the fact that it wobbles after the keyboard is deployed

This again, as stated earlier is really a non-issue if you are normal and take care of your phone. HOWEVER, if you throw your phone around, like to sit on it, or work construction where your phone goes through hell each day, this WOULD be a problem. Personally, i dont understand how some people take such poor care of their phones .

The things the guys is doing in the Youtube video you posted, you and every other other normal person will never do in regular use. The way he is pressing the bottom edge of the screen with the keyboard deployed, or bending the top, there is no sane reason for you to ever do those things. Its just a nitpicky point discovered by somebody looking for problems where there aren't really any.
Its a self fulfilling prophecy. Like a hypochondriac surfing WebMD, the more of this stuff you read or watch, the more you are likely to find a "problem". Stop sweating it, and wait until you have it in your hands. If it really feels like its defective, then send it to HTC. You have full warranty for a year from the manufacturer, I believe.
long story short, your phone is fine, a little give in the hinge is normal.
get that beautiful piece of art to you, root it, and live it up my friend

very well said. a perfect summary of the illusion of the issue.
Thanks for the heads up guys, I think the current plan is to get the phone to me and if it really bothers me, I'll give it to my friend for surgery, I remember seeing somewhere you could buy some of those warranty is now void stickers to put on the phone to make it look like you never touched it... Can someone give me a link?
Htc will check your phone and determine whether you have voided the warranty. But...I'm betting you'll be voiding it anyhow. Just send it back the way you found it. Document recovery hboot info etc so you can find the files to flash when and if u need to. But you shouldn't and lmfao at a 'sticker'

Touch Screen Issues (Sporadic but REALLY bad)

My fiance's Evo Shift has sporadic problems with the touch screen. We can't replicate it on demand so the Sprint techs refuse to believe it's actually broken (we've been in 3-4 times).
Basically, it will just go crazy sometimes. We can literally set the phone down and watch her notifications bar jump up and down all over the screen. Her contacts will open and it will start calling people, disconnect the call, then call someone else...all on it's own.
It's as if it becomes hypersensitive and registers touches that aren't there. It's in a completely random fashion but makes the phone unusable for a good amount of time. Sprint forced her to the 2.3.3 update so I can't root it, though I'm not sure I'd want to anyway in case I found a tech who actually knew what the hell they were doing (very rare with Sprint in this area, at least.)
Any ideas on what's causing it? I am convinced it's hardware but Sprint won't replace the phone because it happens to sporadically. Could it be software? Is there a screen calibration tool I can use without being root?
Go into menu-settings-Language & Keyboard-Touch Input settings-Text input-Calibration tool. Folow the prompts. May or may not help.
If they won't fix it in the store and prboy's suggestion doesn't work you should call Sprint and talk to someone. They aren't doing their job otherwise. You shouldn't have to deal with a phone that isn't working properly. It would be different if you were trying to get a free upgrade to an EVO 3D or trying to replace a beat up phone for free or something which it doesn't sound like you are doing. Mentioning you have heard good things about the competition will usually seal the deal if it comes down to it as well.
Car dealerships do this too and it really pisses me off. It can really be hard to diagnose an intermittent problem and they blow you off because of it. They should give you the benefit of the doubt and switch out your phone. Why would you be there if you weren't having issues.
The calibration prboy suggested doesnt sound like itll work because thats only for the htc ime keyboard.
You said it happened on 2.2 then sprint told you to upgrade to the 2.3.3 OTA update and it still has problems?
Yes, that's exactly what happened. FIRST they told me it was the app Lookout that was causing the problem...that they had an internal memo from Sprint saying it was malware and to delete it. They refused to even look at the phone further until we removed Lookout from her device. Then they sent us home and told us to download the 2.3 update and it would fix the issue.
It didn't and that Sprint tech REALLY made me want to punch him in the face. Incredibly condescending.

Well first off lookout security protects you from the very thing they said it is so dont listen to that.
If it is happening on both updates then it probably is not Software that is the problem.
Is there alot of times where you press something and it doesnt work and you keeps touching it? maybe it is finally registering those touches after you leave it be and thats why. it reads those touch inputs all at once and performs them
I suppose it could be that, but how could we stop that from happening? Stop them from 'queuing' up in such a manner?

It also calibrates the finger touch response for the screen. To the individual using it, we all press the screen differently.

Agreeded. As long as it happens even before you install any apps. Like right after a just doing a phone reset back to factory.
If its because its responding to finger touches at a later time then that usually is a problem with the hardware like the processor. Since it sounds like a hardware issue i can only suggest take it to sprint and show them the problem
I had the same problem with my first shift just call them talk to the tech. dep. Tell them your problem and the will set you up with a new phone they did it for me. But it does sound like what happened with my old one.

that sucks i swore to myself ill never get a refurb smartphone because with my luck it wouldnt be in "like new" condition

Weird touchscreen problems

I'm wondering if these problems are typical of aosp roms or something. One example is that I had a problem with the touchscreen stopping working, and I had to lock the screen and open it again to have it start working again. It's a lot of issues with the touchscreen, it started clicking the same area by itself and I thought it was an app. I wiped the rom and it stopped doing it so I thought it was a software issue, but it did it again later. I think that it is a random things that happens, sometimes more often than not.
It sucks because I love the phone but I'm wondering if it's hardware. Anyone know?
It sounds like hardware issues. Switch to a sense rom and see if it persist.

You can try switching to a Sense Rom as suggested. See if that solves the issue. But if the issue persits, than RUU the phone back to factory stock. Check if the issue continues. If that does not resolve it than I would say it's a hardware issue. After that at least the phone is already in a condition to take back to Sprint for repair, or exchange.

I have a couple of questions. Firstly are you using a aftermarket charger! Are you trying to change screens while on the charger? If you are unplug for a few minutes and try not on the charger. If no to above questions then I would suggest doing what prboy suggests.

I am not using an aftermarket charger, it happens randomly when I am using the phone, usually in bursts. I read that there is a hardware issue sometimes with it sometimes, but it always ends up with the phone being returned.
Does this typically happen on this model? I bought it from someone else, and I'm not sure if it can be exchanged.

Not that i'm aware of no but as long as you have TEP for your line/phone it will get fixed. Buying a phone from someone other that sprint doesn't affect TEP

Ah i remember reading that thread a long time ago. Well at least we know it is in fact hardware issues
All four of my shifts ended up with this same problem. One tech tried to tell me that it was a software issue and I would have to wait for an update and their was no benefit to switching out the phone. Complete BS. After the fourth one started acting up, I called Sprint and spoke with retentions. The lady was incredibly helpful and I explained that I did not have time to keep visiting the Sprint store and that 4 phones in 6 months was not acceptable. In the end the lady made me a new line and I purchased a new phone with the discount and cancelled my old line. This was ~week after the ET4G released. I still have my shift and flashed ICS a week or so ago on it, but its a pain to use with the screen acting up. Oh well, good luck to you!

Well now that your certain, RUU and back it goes. Just hope you have TEP. They should still take care of it even if you don't have TEP. It's just they might give you a hard time. But definately take it in, keep us posted on how it goes.
I have this issues every now and then it doesnt really bother me that much and it seems to happen whenever my phones above 75% charged idk the cause but like i said it doesnt really happen to often
Yes, but you don't want to wait till it completely craps out on you. Just makes things harder to deal with.
It happens daily. I'm not sure if I want to return it and get a refurb with the chance of it happening again, or if I want to get a replacement touchscreen. Has anyone ever replaced the touchscreen and have it work good? Most stories I hear are of replacing it again and again until they decide to get another phone.
If you have TEP. I'd say iy's better to just unroot, and take it in. If you have TEP that's what your paying for . Besides if they screw it up you get another one .

Need to have this replaced.
The touchscreen is actually dying. I just tried Z-test or whatever and parts of the screen do not work.
So, anyone reading this thread, go get it replaced just like everyone else told me to!

You replaced the touch screen or the phone?
Did you try going in to a sprint store and getting it repaired/replaced there?
